EDITOR’S NOTE AND CONTENTS Junior golf is vital to the future of all our clubs in the North East and Yorkshire. So it is a real pleasure to feature some outstanding individual performances in this issue and the great work going on to attract young people into golf. Our cover star is Tyneside’s James Wilson, who saw off the competition to secure the inaugural Northern Golfer Junior Champion of Champions at Ramside Hall. His success was thoroughly deserved and reward for the hard work he has put into his game. Elsewhere, the Race2Rockliffe goes from strength to strength - find out the latest winners on Page 11. We also have a special feature on the work being done at Beamish Park Hotel Golf Club. The formation of an academy 18 months ago is reaping rewards in terms not only of the performance of the juniors, but also in levels of participation. Find out how on pages 18 and 19. Northern Golfer is also delighted to shine a light on the higher handicappers among us. The growth of the North East Rabbits Golfing Association has been impressive. It has created a new level of competition among clubs and individuals in a friendly, welcoming environment. Those of you who enjoy the sociable side of the game would do well to check them out on Page 33. Speaking of competition, Northern Golfer has teamed up with Cleveland Golf Club for a special Team Open next month. There are great prizes - find out more on Page 21 or go straight to the entry form on Page 43 - but hurry as places are limited. One of the most remarkable stories in this issue involves odds of 67 million to one - you have more chance of winning the lottery than of seeing two golfers achieve an ace on the same par FOUR one after the other. That’s what happened at Bamburgh, as you will read on page 4, and it’s one of golf ’s most unusual stories - unless of course you know better. If so, then please get in touch. Finally, congratulations to Arcot Hall’s Ian Garving and Gary Foxwell, who are this year’s Matchplay FREE AT GOLF CLUBS IN THE NORTH EAST AND YORKSHIRE - ISSUE 39 pair champions - taking 25 holes NORTHERN INSIDE to secure victory. Enjoy Portugal guys, and congratulations! NOVEMBER 2015

Bernard Gallacher addresses Blackwell Grange members
Legend’s seal of approval Blackwell Grange’s new facilities opened by Bernard Gallacher
T
hree-time Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher delighted a packed clubhouse when he officially opened the newly refurbished Blackwell Grange, describing it as “an honour to be invited to do it.” Gallacher, an honorary member of the club as a result of his visits in the 1970s, was given a guided tour of the course, driving range and clubhouse. He told the members: “The clubhouse has been beautifully refurbished and the driving range is superb, so there is no excuse for bad golf now! It’s a driving range very similar to that at Wentworth, and I hope you don’t end up like the Wentworth members, because their handicaps have gone up because they don’t use it much!” Gallacher said he remembered the Blackwell Grange course across the road from his visits here in the early 1970s. “My wife’s family come from this area, although she was born in Edinburgh. Her mother was born in Darlington and her father in Shildon After the war they worked in Edinburgh. “We used to come down and see relatives who lived quite close by. I always had my golf clubs in the back of the car, and you know golfers, after 10 minutes they want to be on the golf course , so I would wander round to hit a few at Blackwell. “I did that a few times when I was down here with my wife, and that’s my connection with the club. It’s nice to see how things are now; the facilities here are terrific and the club has a future. I think that’s the important thing. “The clubhouse, the locker rooms, the range and the pro shop are terrific. The facilities are as good as
anywhere in the North,” said Gallacher, wo went on to stress that the club - all clubs - must concentrate on junior golf. “The future of the golf club and the game lies in the youngsters,” he said. “You really have to get the kids involved, because there’ are fewer of them playing golf. But I’m pleased to say there’s a lot of activity here to promote youngsters golf, here at the club and in Teesside. “There are fewer youngsters coming into golf, but with the driving range, putting green and facilities you have out there, hopefully that will help arrest the decline. “Kids definitely like to get on the driving range and hit golf balls. They don’t like to pick up their own golf balls, which wasn’t the case in my day; I just needed a patch of ground and 50 golf balls and I would hit them, then go and pick them up. That gave me a rest, and then I would go at it again, but it is great that kids can go at it all the time and hit balls. “I wish everyone the best. It’s not been very far to come across the road, but there’s plenty of scope for development here. The course looks superb. I think the future’s secure. Your chairman assures me you’re working within the budget, so that’s good news, and I’ve enjoyed coming back here. I always do, and I hope I can come back and hit a few balls and play a few holes. I wish everyone the best.” * Don’t miss Gallacher on the Ryder Cup, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and who is the world’s best golfer in the December issue of Northern Golfer. Course profile: pages 14 and 15.
TEEINGOFF
All four one T Amazing double at Northumberland course he odds on a hole-in-one are pretty steep. To do so on a par four are even steeper, so the odds on two players in the same group doing so one after another on the same hole are astronomical - about 67 million to one - but it’s been done, and it could be a world first here in the North East. Mark Dawson and playing partner Michael Thompson, both single-figure handicappers, went out together in a club stableford at Bamburgh Castle. Nothing much happened, although Dawson was playing pretty well, until they got to the 257-yard par four 17th, where Thompson took out his two iron and aced the hole. After the usual celebrations, he said to Dawson: “Well I’ve given you the line” and watched as his
mate promptly belted his own two iron shot into the hole for an ace as well. It was not the first holes-inone recorded by the pair – it was Thompson’s second and Dawson’s tenth – but doing it at a par four, in the same group, is what makes it special and, possibly, unique. In the history of the USPGA Tour, there has been only one hole-in-one as far as we know on a par four. It was in 2001at Scottsdale in the FBR Open (now called the Phoenix Open). It was also on the 17th, and was hit by Andrew Magee. In the first round of this year’s 2015 Texas Open, Aarron Baddeley holed his tee shot, also on the par four 17th, but it wasn’t an ace, it was only a birdie as he had already played one drive on the hole which he hit it out of bounds. Bamburgh’s lovely 17th hole Bamburgh and Dawson had the equivalent of a score of 60 after his ace, which would have been an amateur course record, but it didn’t count because it was a stableford. He also had a putt on the last for a birdie which would have given him a 59, but the ball hit the hole and spun out. Obviously, the golfing gods decided he’d had enough luck for one day.

Fawcitt takes matchplay title
Slaley’s head teaching professional wins NE/NW PGA Matchplay title at Wynyard
S
teve Fawcitt, head teaching professional at Slaley Hall, closed the NE/NW PGA season with a win in the Match Play Championship at Wynyard. In a rain-affected morning session, Fawcitt beat Hexham’s Philip Waugh at the 20th in the first semi-final- birdieing both extra holes - while Ramside’s James Harper was able to relax having been given a bye to the final. In the afternoon’s final, played in warmer weather, Fawcitt beat Harper 5&4. A former member of the EuroPro Tour, Fawcitt had played in the event four times before, reaching the semifinals once. Having impressed in the earlier rounds – most notably against Close House’s Jonathan Lupton when he emerged victorious despite his opponent having eight birdies – he continued his momentum in the later stages of the competition. Fawcitt said: “I wasn’t expecting to win as I have been teaching so much and concentrating on my role at Slaley
Hall. I didn’t really know how well I was playing. I just took each round as a bonus and I think that helped to take the pressure off as I didn’t go into it with any level of expectation. “I put the win down to a tweak to my putting routine, particularly working on my alignment, and a lot of good up and downs throughout the tournament at key moments. In the final, I only missed one fairway, hit the greens and putted well. The odd time I did miss, I got up and down to keep the pressure on. “Our region is so strong, and I managed to beat a lot of golfers in the early rounds who I respect, so I’m really proud of this win. “My win against Jonathan was probably the best chipping and putting performance of my life, so that was probably the match of the tournament for me.” The Matchplay was the final event of this year’s order of Merit, which was won by Craig Goodfellow, and sponsored this year by AW Jenkinson Forest Products.

Westwood’s Masters plan Close House attached Pro keen to bring European Tour event to Northumberland
C
lose House attached professional Lee Westwood is keen to bring the European Tour back to the North East when he takes his turn to host the British Masters – possibly as early as 2017. The former world number one and European Tour order of merit winner, who finished in a tie for 17th in this year’s event supported by Sky Sports and held at Woburn Golf Club, said: “We [tournament hosts Ian Poulter, Justin Rose, Luke Donald and Westwood] were very happy with how the event was received. “There are very few tournaments in Britain, so to bring one back with the help of Sky Sports is fantastic. “I really enjoyed being back on a traditional English course with tree-lined fairways, and the thousands of fans made it a special event. To see a young British guy from Sheffield [Matt Fitzpatrick] win, was perfect.”
Westwood, who put his name to the championship Lee Westwood Colt course – host of this year’s ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship and the EuroPro Tour’s Tree of Life Championship – and has been the Northumberland club’s attached professional since 2011, added: “It’s a British event so it’s great that different areas, including some which don’t see a lot of tournament golf, will get to see it. “I would love to bring the event to Close House when it’s my turn to host it. You get a lot of events in the south of England and Scotland and I want to see a top level event in the North. “I’ve always enjoyed coming to Close House. Graham [Wylie, owner] is a great host and I know he’s behind the bid to get the Masters here – including being open to making some changes to the course.” The 2016 British Masters will be hosted by former world number one Luke Donald at The Grove.

Ian Garving, Gary Foxwell, Matthew Harper and Alan Brady
Marathon men Arcot Hall pair triumph on the 25th hole
I
an Garving and Gary Foxwell are Northern Golfer’s Matchplay champions after being pushed all the way by past winners Alan Brady and Matthew Harper. The Arcot Hall duo finally saw off their Durham City opponents in an absorbing contest on the 25th hole in the final over the Prince Bishops course at Ramside Hall Golf Club. Garving and Foxwell are now off to Portugal for the North East & North West PGA Portugal Pro Am courtesy
of Golfing Holidays. They are staying at the 4 star Pestano Dom Joao 11 Hotel in Alvor and playing courses at Morgado, Pinta, Gramacho and Palmares. Tournament organiser Corney said: “I have overseen the finals of these knock-out tournaments for many years this final was the best by a long way. The quality of the golf played was simply brilliant. I congratulate all four players who took part. It was a pity one team had to lose.”
The Durham City team started slowly, resulting in the loss of the first three holes. At this point there seemed to be way back, but the two County Durham players had other ideas. At the fourth Foxwell found the green in regulation and proceeded to roll in a 30 footer for birdie. Brady then responded with an 18 footer off a nasty hump on the right of the green for a birdie and with a shot his nett eagle won the hole. The next hole also went to the Durham team where Harper made par nett birdie. The score remained 1up to Arcot through the next three holes with various players making par. Brady’s solid approach game won the ninth, where he birdied the hole for a nett eagle to bring the match back to all square. The following four holes were all halved in par and on the 14th Matthew’s nett birdie finally gave the Durham team the lead. Both 15 and 16 were halved, while the par five 17th saw a good birdie from Foxwell win the hole. And on the final hole, Foxwell did have a putt for birdie and the match, but missed the cup by a whisker. Brady’s nett par
ensured the match went into extra holes. The play off began on the first when Brady’s chip from about 20 yards looked in all the way, but the ball lipped round the back of the cup – hole halved. And through the next five holes, all the players had chances to win the match, but failed in their attempts to get the ball into the hole. Finally, at the short par three 7th, Garving’s tee shot found the green leaving him a putt of 8ft. Brady’s tee shot also found the putting surface, but his approach putt of around 20ft came up short. Garving failed in his birdie attempt, leaving Brady to hole his for half. Clearly feeling the pressure, he missed and the match was finally over – a win for Arcot Hall on the 25th hole. To secure their places, all the players had to play semi-final matches at Wynyard Hall Golf Club. In the first match, Arcot Hall took on a team from Garesfield Golf Club consisting of Andrew Sharp and Paul Chapman. Unfortunately, Chapman suffered an accident a few days prior to the match and was unable to take part, leaving Andrew to play their opponents

by himself. Not an ideal situation, but Sharp can take credit for his performance, and the fact that he was only two down after nine holes was an outstanding effort. He couldn’t, however, keep up with the Arcot team and eventually lost the match 5 & 3 on the 15th hole. In the other semi-final, Durham City took on Steve Slater from City of Newcastle Golf Club and his partner Gary Wright from Backworth. This was a much tighter game with Durham City holding a slim lead for lengthy periods and finally winning on the 18th green 1 up. Garving and Foxwell deserve great credit for their victory, while 2013 champions Brady and Harper came so close to repeating their success. The final was a fitting end to another fantastic tournament played in a great spirit. Good luck to Ian and Gary in Portugal.

ig-hitting Prudhoe professional Rebecca McGinley finished third in the World Long Drive Championship in the USA. McGinley’s fantastic feat is all the more incredible given the fact that the World Championships was only her second long drive event after she won the trip to the finals at WinStar Casino Resort in Thackerville, Oklahoma with victory at the American Golf Long Drive Championships at High Leigh Par in Cheshire. “It’s an amazing feeling to have come this far,” said McGinley. “It was only May when I had a go at qualifying at the Gateshead American

Golf store, and now I’m the American Golf Champion and officially the third best Women’s Long Driver in the world! “I’ve had an amazing time and am so grateful to have had the opportunity to show what I can do.” McGinley started the competition slowly in the USA, but as it progressed she took her qualifying drives from 271 to 291 to 310 yards. Because of those early results, McGinley had to compete in a sudden death qualifying round, which she won by three yards with a 307-yard drive, securing a spot in the three-way final shootout against three-time World Champion Sandra Carlborg and 2013 Champion
Rebecca McGinley at the World Long Driving Championships in the USA Heather LeMaster. Up against two of the most experienced long drivers in the world, McGinley pulled out her longest drive of the tournament with a 311 yard monster. However, she couldn’t quite match LeMaster’s 318 yard drive and winner Carlborg’s 321 yard effort. McGinley added: “What started
as a bit of fun has turned into an incredible, life-changing experience. Sandra and Heather are two fantastic competitors the American Golf competition has given me an opportunity to take on. I just need to work on my long drive swing and I’ll hopefully come back next year to perform even better.”

It’s backed by both Mizuno and Rockliffe and is aimed at encouraging more junior golfers to support the junior opens and DCJGS events around the county each season and in doing so gaining valuable competitive experience. Once again, it attracted over 120 golfers, who have played more than 800 rounds of golf between them in the quest to qualify for the final at Rockliffe Hall and the chance of being crowned champion.

The grand final of Durham’s successful junior golf order of merit at Rockliffe Hall saw the overall winner decided on a card playoff - and Beamish Park Golf Club member Matthew returned an excellent round of 75 to edge out his rivals. Fifteen-year-old Watson’s score was matched by Dominic Salmon (Bishop Auckland), but he took the title on count back. Last year, Watson lifted the nett prize also on a countback. He wins a custom fit set of Mizuno irons as the new champion. The winner of this year’s nett prize was Emily Baxter, from Houghton-le-Spring, with a score of 71. The competition is backed by Mizuno Golf and Rockliffe Hall. Phil Graham, County Development Officer for the Durham County Golf Partnership, said: “We are delighted with the way the Race 2 Rockliffe continues to develop as one of the country’s premier order of merit competitions for juniors. “Competing on different Emily Baxter with her trophy courses against players of a

Marcus stepping up Armitage triumphs in Challenge Tour card event but Gavins just loses out after leading the field
M
arcus Armitage, twice a winner on this year’s EuroPro Tour - including at the Tree of Life Championship at Close House - collected one of five 2016 Challenge Tour cards at the EuroPro Tour’s £20,000 Matchroom Sport Tour Championship at Desert Springs Resort in Spain. Bowood Golf & County Club’s Jordan Smith leapt up the Race to Desert Springs rankings with victory in the Tour Championship, pushing Armitage to fourth place in the standings. Sam Connor, this year’s winner of the Dawson and Sanderson Forex Classic at Longhirst Hall, will also be joining them on the Challenge Tour, alongside Darren Wright and Aaron Rai. There was disappointment for Walton Driving Range’s Daniel
Gavins, who led the field by four shots going into the final round. He was caught in the final round by Smith and Rai, all three players recording eight-under-par three-round totals. In the sudden-death playoff, Yorkshireman Gavins, who had been unwell during his last two rounds, dropped out at the third extra hole when he bogeyed the par-four 18th. Rai exited on the following additional hole when his approach found greenside water and he was forced to take a penalty drop, while Smith held his nerve to make par and land himself promotion to the Challenge Tour in his first season as a professional. “I am over the moon,” said Smith, who takes home a new Motocaddy Trolley, Bushnell Tour X Range Finder, Bolle Sunglasses and £500 to spend with HotelPlanner.com as well as the £20,000 winner’s cheque. “It was
Marcus Armitage tough, I am mentally and physically drained, but I am delighted. “Winning the Order of Merit is the icing on the cake and I am looking forward to playing the Challenge Tour now. My target for the season was to get a win, so to get another is above and beyond what I was expecting.” Rai had sat fifth on the Order of Merit ahead of the event with only a narrow margin between himself and the chasing pack. With the entire field at Desert Springs feasibly able to catch him, the pressure had been on to cement his place in the top five and earn the Challenge Tour card which comes with it.
Daniel Gavins “I feel great to have earned my Challenge Tour card,” he said. “That was the aim at the start of the week. It is disappointing to lose the play off, but Jordan deserves it – he had a great round and has played well all week. I am very much looking forward to next year.”

atthew Webb completed a memorable season by winning the PGA North Tour Championships at Blackpool resort Herons’ Reach, before going on to victory in the NE/NW PGA’s Archerfield Links Autumn Pro Am. The 25-year-old, who works as an assistant to his dad Marcus at Bedlington Golf Club, claimed the title with rounds of 68 and 69. His score was a seven underpar total, one shot ahead of Simon Edwards from Windermere, and Swinton Park’s David Smith. Webb recorded five birdies in the first round and then four in the first six holes in the final round. He said: “This was my first visit to Herons’ Reach and I quickly found it suited my game so I enjoyed the challenge.” Earlier in the season, Webb, who
joined the pro ranks on his 23rd birthday, achieved a rare sequence of results when he won the PGA North Assistants’ North East North West Championship at Rockliffe Hall. He also won the national assistants’ qualifier at The Warwickshire and hopes to embark on a full-time playing career. He added: “I don’t practise as much as I used to because I don’t have time for it, but I think about the game a bit more. But you’ve got to be realistic and get your PGA qualifications behind you because it’s something you can always fall back on.” At Archerfield, Webb recorded an 11 under-par 36-hole total (83 stableford points). Tynedale and Philips Golf pro Martin Forster finished second with 81 points, as Brampton’s James Wilkinson finished third.

Blackwell’s in great shape Alan Hedley finds a club and a course making its mark in impressive style
B
lackwell Grange is well on the way to becoming one of the premier golf clubs in the North of England. With a magnificently-refurbished clubhouse, driving range and state-of-the-art professional’s shop, officially opened by former Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher, this club doesn’t let you down when it comes to the golf course - quite the opposite. Many people will be familiar with the course in its previous existence as Stressholme, a municipal club, but in an eminently sensible move, Blackwell Grange club moved in to take over the running of the course while its lay-out was earmarked for housing development. The result is a club with a settled future, excellent facilities and a course set in beautiful, natural parkland measuring just under 6,500 yards off the back tees. It meanders through a challenging and varied landscape with the River Skerne running through the course and coming into play at several holes. 14 NORTHERN GOLFER
Things get under way in fairly tricky style with a testing par four defined by the trees that both cross and close-in the fairway. Some accurate hitting is required if you are to get off to a decent start. The Skerne encourages extra skill at the next three holes. The second is a long, difficult par four despite being downhill with the river running along the right-hand side for the final 100 yards or so, with the green nestling invitingly in the river’s loop. The third is a short uphill dog-leg par four, but with the river running all the way along its length. The fourth, the signature hole (see factfile), is an excellent par three. A straightforward par four follows provided you can get a good drive away and avoid the trees and strategically-placed bunker, while the sixth poses similar problems. The seventh is arguably the toughest hole on the course at nearly 450 yards, but it’s pretty straight and the fairway is wide.
The eighth is a shorter, possibly drivable, dogleg, but there are well-placed bunkers and trees waiting and the front nine ends with a long par three with a green also well guarded by bunkers and trees to the left. The start of the back nine sees the first par five and it’s rated as the second toughest hole on the course, but it is well manageable for the longer hitters as it is straight and relatively trouble-free. Another longish par three follows with a lateral water hazard all the way up the right with the green surrounded by bunkers. The 12th requires a good drive through a narrow part of the course that combines the wellmatured landscape with some tricky bunkers, and the 13th is another good par three with a narrow entrance to the green through trees and bunkers. Four of the final five holes all measure over 400 yards, and while the 14th is a par five, the fairway is tight and bordered by trees. The 15th is a shortish par four, but one of the most interesting holes on the course.

Blackwell Grange is a club very much on the upward path. The official opening of the refurbished clubhouse, new pro shop and driving range with former Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher doing the honours, took place in front of a full house of members. With new general manager Ian Knight and club officials driving the development forward, the future of Blackwell Grange now seems assured. The new pro shop attached to a newly-refurbished driving range allowed the club the space needed to build new changing rooms.
FEATURES Mature 18 hole parkland course Fully refurbished 15-bay driving range Brand New Pro Shop and changing rooms Excellent clubhouse bar and lounge/restaurant Plenty of car parking With a narrow fairway with the now familiar tree and bunker combination waiting to snare anything slightly off line, there’s also a road and hedge all the way up the left until the hole turns left at around the 230-yard mark. Any drive short of this point is going to make the second shot to the green problematic. The 16th is another par five and a nice straight drive avoiding the trees and bunker makes it a good birdie chance. Two great par fours make the finish. The 17th is over 400 yards with an abundance of trees up the left, a couple of bunkers in the middle of the fairway, and a well-guarded green, while 18 is another long par four which again features all the course’s trademark characteristics - trees, well-placed sand traps and inviting greens.
CADDY’S TIP Definitely worth a warm up on the excellent driving range. Work on your stroke on the putting green, as you need to be straight off the tee from the first hole onwards. The greens are always fast and true, so putting will make or break your score. SIGNATURE HOLE The par three fourth hole is a great test for all players. At 130 yards from the back tee, there is little room for error. Anything slightly right will see your ball at the bottom of the River Skerne, so club selection is everything.

Staff answer their calling BT employees join the Get into Golf campaign
N
orth East BT employees have given a ringing endorsement to the national drive to encourage more people into golf. And the company says it is not just the individuals who are benefiting, but the business too. BT decided to promote golf to the company’s employees after research into its impressive physical and mental wellbeing benefits. The company learnt about the sport’s benefits and the work of the Get into Golf campaign in a British Heart Foundation health-for-work newsletter. It seemed perfect for BT’s Fit for Life programme, designed to help BT employees become healthy and active, raise money for charity and
help in the community. “A round of golf can involve walking up to five miles and burning around 900 calories. Golf also helps you relax, reduces stress and encourages you to spend time with friends out in the fresh air,” says BT senior nursing advisor Jo Jenkins “This can help those who work at BT feel more energised, fit and healthy, which can only be positive. Golf can also create good working relationships by encouraging bonding away from the office environment.” Get into Golf set up a BT afterwork taster event for employees at the company’s Newcastle office. It took place at City of Newcastle Club and was run by PGA pro Steve
Steve McKenna shows how it’s done McKenna. The event was attended by 17 employees from BT - some of whom had played golf before, while others were new to the game. Steve taught the group the basics of golf and they also learned to hold the club and tried their hand at hitting some balls with a seven iron on the driving range. Paul Whittaker, the Northumberland County Development Officer, took the group on the putting green for a fun competition to see who could putt
around five holes using the fewest strokes. The event finished with refreshments in the clubhouse, while Paul talked about the followon opportunities of a five-week beginner course for £25. Steve McKenna said: “This type of activity is a great way to sow the seeds to a healthier lifestyle through golf.” For further information visit www.getintogolf.org or tel 0800 118 2766

Maggie may make it to the top
Some of the Beamish Park Hotel Juniors Maggie Whitehead Maggie Whitehead looks like proving another success story for girls’ golf in the North East - and the Beamish Park Hotel Academy. The nine-year-old from Belmont, Durham, has qualified to play in the Junior World Championships at Pinehurst in the USA in August, 2016, after becoming the US Kids Golf British Junior champion. “Maggie has been doing really well and the big thing for her now is the trip to America. She can’t wait,” said her father Andy. “After winning at Woodhall Spa in the British Junior Championship by one shot, she went up to St Andrews and did really well in the Wee Wonders Championship.” Her success also earned a spot at the Junior European Championships in Scotland in May, having been up there earlier this year for the Wee Wonders Grand Final after qualifying events at Matfen Hall and Dumfries. Maggie completed a hat-trick of wins to top the order of merit on the Durham Srixon Tour and she represented Durham against Cumbria and Northumberland in the Northern Counties Final. Maggie comes from a golfing family; her father plays off nine at Ramside Hall, her grandfather Ray played off six, while her grandmother Margaret has been captain at the County Durham course. 18 NORTHERN GOLFER

Beamish Park’s academy nurtures young talent Club’s commitment is repaid as boys and girls develop their game at thriving facility
J
ust 18 months ago, Brian Ridley and Mark Rayson launched the Beamish Park Hotel Junior Golf Academy. And it’s been a very successful 18 months, with victories and trophies at various levels, but what is far more important has been the establishment of an academy which encompasses the best of everything. “We coined the phrase ‘learn, train, compete’,’’ said Ridley, who has been the PGA qualified professional at Beamish Park Hotel Golf Academy for the last 20 years. “Both Mark and I worked with England Golf ’s County Golf Partnership. He is a pretty good organiser and I knew I couldn’t do the academy idea here on my own, so we talked about it. “Mark had a lot of input and said he thought
we could capitalise on the facilities and relaxed golf environment at the academy, so we agreed he’d come on board. “We wanted to address some common concerns with junior golf programmess, talent development and the overall balance between coaching, practice, playing and competing. “Firstly, we recognised that kids around the world are in lesson programmes, yet for various reasons don’t play regularly or often not at all. Secondly, we wanted to provide an opportunity for competitive players to improve through learning and training together regularly as a motivated team of individuals. “Many new juniors have been introduced to golf on a driving range or practice grounds, but hadn’t experienced the game of golf or grasped
BEAMISHPARK the basic concept. At Beamish, we make this a number one priority. “Our players are with us three times a week, so we know they are learning, training and competing. Mondays and Tuesdays are lesson nights, Friday nights are practice, and Saturdays are for competitions on our challenging nine-hole academy course. “We’re in a fortunate position that we can close the course on a Saturday morning and let the kids play. Many clubs can’t or won’t do that, and we do get a lot of kids coming from other areas. “Kids are now grouped by ability for coaching, but train and compete together on a Saturday so that new players can learn from the more experienced. “It takes a lot of time. Mark has put in so much work behind the scenes with regard to the finance and organisation and it’s been a pretty good first year in terms of player recruitment, commitment, improvement and victories in tournaments outside the academy.” There have been something like 50 youngsters through the academy, and the attraction is undoubtedly the fact that they can receive coaching, training and play weekly, plus how affordable the whole package is. “Parents play a significant supporting role and love how quickly we take them from beginners to strong, confident, independent winners within the academy,
“Some of the kids will arrive and it’s the first time they have held a golf club or it’s their first time on a golf course, but they can turn up with any gear and give it a try and we can then sort them out. “We’ve had some success, especially with some of our girls. It is harder for the boys because the pool of talent is bigger and more competitive, but what we really stress here is that we want them to have fun.” It’s no surprise players of the quality of Jessica Hall, Alex Stevenson, Tilly Barton, Maggie Whitehead and Abbi Wheatley have all spent time at the Academy and experienced success along with the like of Ben Willis, Luke Bonser, Keiran Buchan and Gabriel Smith. There are more in the pipeline like Amy Buchan, Morgan Bailey and Faye Wheatley. The plan is to grow the academy so that it has classes Monday to Thursday and be able to field multiple teams of players with great attitudes towards the game. “We’ve come a long way in 18 months, and with hard work from the coaches, volunteers and players we will be a model for future clubs across the UK to follow,” added Rayson. R
amside Hall has established a new scholarship for junior golfers. The 36-hole Co Durham resort has launched the scholarship in honour of former company chairman, the late Michael Adamson. The Michael Adamson Junior Golf Scholarship honours the legacy of a man who oversaw the development of Ramside’s fourstar hotel and estate into one of the finest golf facilities in North East England The scholarship will be awarded annually to two boys and two girls aged 12 to 16 from the region. The scholars will receive membership at Ramside Golf Club, use of its two championship courses, golf academy and driving range, and a personalised golf coaching programme from Head PGA Professional Kevin Jackson. Helen Roseberry, director of golf, said: “It is a huge thrill to officially launch the new Michael Adamson Scholarship for Junior Golf at Ramside. “It is named in honour of my father Michael who passionately believed in providing
opportunity for deserving people in all areas of the Ramside Estates business. “Our company is rich in stories of people who joined in junior roles, like pot washing and housekeeping, and grew into head chefs and hotel managers. “We wanted to do the same with junior golf and provide young people with a springboard to achieve great things in a sport which brings so much pleasure to so many people.” The inaugural winners of the Michael Adamson Junior Golf Scholarship were chosen following an application process and a golf skills testing day. They are Lewis Reay (Ramside Hall), Duran Gun (George Washington), Gabrielle Dickinson (Houghton-le-Spring) and Kitana Hollins (Ramside Hall). Kevin Jackson, Head PGA Professional, said: “I’m delighted to welcome Kitana, Lewis, Duran, and Gabrielle as our first-ever junior golf scholars and I’m excited to help develop them both as golfers and as people. We hope that they will all become positive role models for other young people who are keen to take up this great sport.”

Pair miss out, but there’s joy for other Northern golfers illingham duo David McNeill and Dennis Wright just missed out at the northern regional final of the 2015 HowDidiDo Morocco Matchplay Championship. McNeill, 57, from Billingham, and Wright, 65, just failed to secure one of the two qualifying spots up for grabs in the northern regional senior pairs final at Oulton Park, Leeds. Instead, the places in February’s grand final at Golf de Mogador in Essaouira went to James Turriff and Brian Cavellini from Blairgowrie and Rookery Park’s David Porter and Brian Bidwell, in a rain-affected regional final which was reduced to a 12-hole competition. But there was joy for Yorkshire duo Craig and David Vine. The Hosforth pair were one of two father and son duos to qualify for the first time in
the event’s history. Chris and Colin Heard, from Stone, Staffordshire, were the other father and son pair to go through. Craig, an 11 handicapper, and David, who plays off four headed the field with 43 points, while the other qualifiers made the grade with 41 to make it through to the men’s final. In total, 32 competitors will enjoy complimentary return flights to Morocco, five nights accommodation at the five-star Sofitel Essaouira Mogador Golf and Spa hotel, and four rounds of golf at nearby Golf de Mogador. Meanwhile a Tanfield Lea golfer has earned the chance to win an allexpenses-paid dream golf holiday by winning the latest ‘Road to Morocco’ event at Slaley Hall, Hexham. Graham Clennell, who plays off 16, was crowned champion at the
David McNeill and Dennis Wright club’s sponsored medal event, one of a series of nationwide tournaments organised by the Moroccan National Tourism Office (MNTO) and QHotels, the UK’s largest golf resort operator. The ‘Road to Morocco’ series encompasses all 11 of QHotels’ golf resorts, with 22 member events for men and women - with each winner being entered into a draw to win a trip to Morocco. Clennell has now been entered into the draw which will see two
lucky competition winners from the series - one male, one female - win a four-night Moroccan golf holiday for two people, flights included. Amine Boughaleb, MNTO’s director for UK and Ireland, explained: “The ‘Road to Morocco’ has given us a fantastic opportunity to work with the prestigious QHotels group. “It also gives UK golfers the chance to experience our excellent golf facilities.”

Selby’s prize guys Pair win round with legend, trip to Bahamas and TaylorMade drivers
Y
orkshire duo Mark Kelly and Luke Eustace will get the chance to play with Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley after winning the American Golf 9 Hole Championship at The Belfry. The Selby pair also won a holiday in the Bahamas and M1 drivers from Taylormade. After accepting their prize from Sky Sports presenter Rob Lee, Eustace said: “The prize is sensational, we’ve won everything; the round with Paul McGinley, the Bahamas trip and M1 drivers from TaylorMade. “I hope that this doesn’t show that I’ve had a dull life, but it’s easily up there with the best weeks I’ve ever had. We’ll definitely be spreading the word about the American Golf event for next year.”
Having qualified for the event as regional winners, Kelly and Eustace put two great 9 Hole rounds of golf together in the early stages of the final to qualify for the semi-final matchplay in front of the Sky Sports cameras. Their semi-final encounter went down to the wire, securing victory on the last hole before taking on Swindon brothers Sam and Tom Ruddle. Eustace added: “The cameras made me nervous. I was all right in the semis and in the morning, but during the final, I was quite nervous.” But Kelly and Eustace were first out the blocks, taking an early two shot lead to settle the nerves, which Kelly saw as vital. “Because of the short format and the early lead, we really settled in and we never felt like we were losing.”
Mark Kelly and Luke Eustace
Eustace hit the shot of the final on the seventh hole when he nailed a recovery from the sand and sank the putt for birdie to go two up with two to play. The pair then took the momentum into the next, winning the hole to secure their victory 3 and 1. The American Golf 9 Hole Championship is part of the company’s drive to get more people playing golf. “This shorter form of the game has proven popular, with a fantastic turn out at the qualifying events held all over the UK and Ireland on weekday evenings.

First among equals Tyneside’s James Wilson tells Dean Bailey of his hopes for the future after being crowned Northern Golfer’s first Junior Champion of Champions at Ramside Hall
T
yneside Golf Club’s James Wilson capped a breakthrough year in his young golf career with victory in the first Northern Golfer Junior Champion of Champions at Ramside Hall. Wilson, who made his Durham County and England Boys’ debuts this season, led the field in the single round event with a score of 72 over Ramside’s Cathedral Course. He said: “It was a great day at Ramside and I really enjoyed playing the new course. I knew a lot of the guys taking part from county and national events so it was great see them and catch up. “I started the round with a great drive at the first, which normally means it’s going to be a good driving day. I made an up-anddown for birdie there and that got me going.” Wilson went on to play the opening four holes in one under-par – birdieing the long par-three fourth. At the par-three 12th, he made a double bogey to slip to two over-par and set himself the task of finishing strongly in order to have a chance at the title. “My round turned around after that mistake,” he said. “I played solid golf in the last six holes – hitting fairways and greens, and holing a couple of nice midlength putts to get some momentum going. “The 18th was certainly the highlight of the round. I was one over-par on the tee and had a feeling that a birdie would give me a chance. I hit a great four-iron to 10ft and holed the putt to give myself a chance at level-par.” Wilson’s round of 72 gave him a one-shot victory over Boldon Golf Club’s Rhys Thompson. Heworth Golf Club’s Aaron Scott finished third with a round of 75, as Chester-le-Street’s Alex Carr finished in fourth

place with a round of 77. Wilson, who has represented Northumberland and Durham at junior level made his Durham Men’s team debut this season against Cumbria, before representing the county against Yorkshire later in the season. “In my first game for the county I came up against John Longcake – who’s been around the county game for a long time and is a really well respected player. “Playing against players like John and the experienced guys in the county and at national events has given me a huge amount of experience and shown me what it takes to become a better player. “The guys are really encouraging and it has brought my game on a great deal, making the step up and learning what it takes to win at a high level.” A member at Tyneside and Close House, 16-yearold Wilson has also competed in a number of national events this year and received his first England Boys’ cap against Wales. “After three rounds I was tied-sixth in the McGregor Trophy at Wallasey Golf Club, and I was tied-fourth in the Scottish Boys’ Championship at Dunbar after three rounds too. Although I didn’t play too well in the final rounds of those, I was happy to get myself into contention and show I can compete at that level regularly,” he said. A product of the junior development systems at Tyneside and Close House, Wilson credits the two clubs with giving him the opportunity to progress and improve. “The coaching and encouragement I’ve received since taking up the game when I was 12 has been amazing at both Close House and Tyneside. Tyneside in 2013 having started at Close House and the progress since then has been really fast,” he said. Wilson picked up the game with his aunt Christine, uncle Paul and father Andy as a 10-year-old before getting his first handicap of 19 at 12 years old. Now playing off scratch, having been as low as plus-one earlier this season, Wilson is looking forward to playing more elite amateur events and making further progress in the
game. “My progression has been really fast in the last four years and I’m looking forward to building up more experience while I’m studying for my A Levels. “My mum and dad have been really supportive. I couldn’t play golf all over the country without their support, and my dad driving me up and down the country every other week. “Craig Wayman at Dynamic Indoor Golf has also been a big support in the last couple
of years, as has my coach John McKenna. In the next 12 months, I’d like to keep making cuts in national events and start pushing into the top10 regularly so the national selectors notice me more often. “I’ve got two years to progress in the Boys and under-18 events before I look at going off to university with the goal of making a living from playing golf – that’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.” A total of 43 players from across the North East and Yorkshire took part in the first Northern Golfer Junior Champion of Champions, which was hosted by Ramside Hall Hotel Golf & Spa and supported by partners Mill Volvo, Elddis Transport, Tour Performance Golf, and Hall Construction. News of the 2016 event will be published in the new year. Norther Golfer editor Paul Robertson said: “We are passionate about promoting junior golf and would like to thank our sponsors for making the event happen. “We hope it will be bigger and better next year with clubs entering their junior champion. Congratulations to James on a great round.”

Backworth Golf Club’s Neil Gascoigne finished 12th in the World Hickory Open Championship at Carnoustie. Gascoigne, a two-handicapper and club champion at Backworth, posted an opening round of 76 on the Buddon course, and followed that with an 84 on the Championship course playing with the hickory-shafted clubs from the forward tees. In a mixed field of amateurs and pros, Gascoigne was fourth lowest amateur. Meanwhile, trick shot specialist and former Richmond and Catterick pro Dave Edwards, finished in a tie for 29th place.
Moving on? Darlington members have voted overwhelmingly in favour of a plan which would see the club move from its Haughton Grange course to make way for a housing development. Members voted 221-36 to continue a partnership with developer Theakston Estates Ltd which owns land to the north of the club’s existing site. Theakston has proposed a plan which would see the club move north of its existing site and nearer the River Skerne. The current site would be developed for housing. Suggestions that the club could merge with Blackwell Golf Club have been emphatically rejected by club officials. Darlington Club chairman David Peat said: “There was a good turnout at the meeting and the proposal was positively received with the overwhelming majority of members in support.” Theakston Estates and the club will now consult with the planning authority and the local community before drawing up detailed plans for consideration. 28 NORTHERN GOLFER

Hutchinson’s feeling champion
T
he North East produced another winner when Steve Hutchinson became English/ Welsh Open champion at Hunley Hall. Barnard Castle’s Hutchinson, who was part of Europe’s Fightmaster Cup success last year, claimed his biggest individual title in some style with a 60 point stableford total in the 27-hole event. He was at the top of his game on the Morgans Course at Hunley Hall. Hutchinson, who plays one-handed since he paralysed an arm in a motorcycle accident in 2005, shot an amazing six-under-par nett score over the 27 holes following up a morning nine holes, when he was one under, by blitzing the field on the afternoon 18 holes with a five under par score. Hutchinson, 49, said: “It was a fantastic weekend. I played well in the Friday practice round so I felt good about my game going into the Saturday championship. “I started well in the morning and things just got better and better in a strong wind and my total was 11 points clear of second place, so I was really happy. My putting was what made my day. I had some really long ones that went in. “This is the biggest win I have had with the onearmed society and it was great to do it on a course here in the North East. Special thanks to my brilliant caddie Dawn and to Ralph Givens for sorting out my swing.” Hutchinson, who is an assistant at Blackwell Grange, was never under threat on the afternoon and it was Staffordshire’s Terry Adnams who finished runner-up in tough conditions. Darlington’s Darren Grey, a former World One-
Armed Champion, was disappointed with his own showing, but was delighted to see his good friend Hutchinson turn on the style to impress. Grey, 30, did win the nearest the pin competition, and said: “I was happy with the way I played in parts of my game. I personally felt that with not playing as much golf this year my touch and feel isn’t as good as it was. “But I was lucky enough to be drawn with Steven on Saturday and was extremely impressed with the progress he has made with his game over the last two years. “I’ve seen him excel more and more every time he comes to tournaments, which is brilliant in my eyes. One of the best bits of playing disabled golf is seeing people progress to fulfil their potential. “It was a pleasure to watch him in action. Even when Steven looked like he may struggle on a hole, he played some great recovery shots and you could see his confidence grow through the round.” Chester’s Dave Waterhouse recorded the best gross score when he shot 18 over after 27 holes.

Parklands duo Kath Morpeth and Denise Swindlehurst
Pride of Parklands Pair just fall short on national finals day
P
arklands pair Denise Swindlehurst and Kath Morpeth came close to winning the Daily Mail Foursomes title in a marathon finals day at the Forest of Arden. Having battled through seven matchplay rounds to reach the final, Kath, 64, and Denise, 59, proved age was no barrier as they went on to play for eight and half hours in the finals, winning their last 16 morning match at the 20th hole, Denise holing a 30foot putt to beat Burghill Valley’s Pam Layton and Jane Swan. And then in the afternoon quarterfinals they won two up on the 18th against West Surrey’s Christine Staff and Helen Riddy to move into the semi-finals on the final day. Unfortunately, they lost their semifinal match but took their opponents, Mickleover’s Debbie Deakin and Shelley Woodward, all the way to the 19th. That meant the Parklands pairing had played 57 holes in three games over a day and a half, which is some going, and no wonder they’re the
toast of their club. The Mickleover duo lost 4 and 3 in the final to Ruddington Grange’s Wendy Kerry and Loraine Howd, who reeled off four wins in five holes from the eighth to set up victory. Amazingly, Kerry needed acupuncture on a frozen shoulder to play in the finals week. She’s due to have an operation on her shoulder next month and it’s the third time she and Deakin had crossed swords in various competitions this year; the honours even before the foursomes final. Incidentally, Parklands, in conjunction with Northumberland County Golf Partnership and England Golf, is officially the county’s Female Golf Starter Centre. Parklands ladies academy is designed to allow women to take up the game and progress to full membership in a social and relaxed environment. A winter programme has been put together and membership includes a coaching and playing schedule as well as having access to the course.

TOUR LIFE
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED When I earned my European Tour card for the second time through the Qualifying School a year ago, I set out to finish in the Top 110 of the Race to Dubai. After a season filled with consistent golf, a slight lack of playing opportunities, and some key putts in Hong Kong, I finished the season in 108th position. When my category didn’t get me into the Dunhill Links or the British Masters, I dropped considerably on the Race to Dubai rankings. All of a sudden my position among the top 110 was in jeopardy. With only the Portugal Masters and Hong Kong Open remaining, the pressure was on! After a decent 37th in Portugal, which created a small gap between me and the guy in 111th, I headed to Hong Kong knowing my career was at a crossroads. Fast forward to Friday, hole 14. I had just made an awful double bogey to take me two outside of the cut mark. In my mind, if I didn’t make the cut, I was going to lose my card. It was time to dig deep. I holed a 35ft putt on 15 for birdie, then followed that up with two solid pars. On the 17th I holed a 20ft putt for birdie. All of a sudden I just needed to par the last. Not wanting to make things easy, I hooked my tee shot into the trees. I chipped out and hit a good wedge to around 15ft. It was a surreal feeling knowing that my season had come down to this one putt. I have no idea why, but I knew it was going in. It did. After a stressful Sunday, it transpired that making the cut alone was enough to secure my card. Relief was the primary emotion. Looking back, I really don’t know how I knew I was going to make those putts on the last five holes. I suppose it is a testament to all the work we have put into my game - I could not be more grateful to my team. Thank you to my wife, family, team, and supporters. Mission accomplished. Here’s to a great 2016! PS: If you were one of the folks doing the maths in the early hours of Sunday morning to see if I had done enough to keep my card, you have my sincere apologies!

New role
Emily Cheshire England Golf is doubling up on its efforts to grow the sport in Yorkshire. The game’s national governing body has appointed a second development officer to support the work of clubs and driving ranges across the White Rose county. Emily Cheshire will team up with Tom Freeland with a brief to attract more players, increase membership and develop stronger clubs across the region. Chesire, 21, recently graduated with a first class honours degree in Sport Business Management from Leeds Beckett University, where she also played for the University golf team. She said: “I first started playing golf aged six. “The role of Yorkshire CDO couldn’t be better suited to my skills and personality.”
Third place Richmond’s Karen Jobling finished third behind Kent’s Steph Marshall at Frilford Heath in the England Women’s Grand Medal Final. Marshall shot a net 67 to finish two shots clear of the youngest competitor, 12-year-old Hannah Golding from Staffordshire, with Karen third place on nett 70. Four handicapper Jobling was round in one-over gross 74 for nett 70. “I’m ecstatic,” she said. “I think everyone was expecting to wake up to rain and when we didn’t we felt very lucky and that was relaxing. “I didn’t start very well. My drive clipped a tree, but I managed to make a par and decided that was the sign to get on with it - and I hit some good shots.” Jobling is the Richmond ladies’ club champion. 32 NORTHERN GOLFER

Barclay banking on success
Youngster hopes to follow in clubmate’s footsteps
R
ising Yorkshire and England star Barclay Brown is determined to follow in European Tour star Matthew Fitzpatrick’s footsteps and taste success. Barclay, winner of the North of England Junior title at Durham’s South Moor course, has just played in the Telegraph BMW Junior Championship and he made an encouraging debut in the prestigious event at Quinta do Lago in Portugal. The 14-year-old, like Fitzpatrick, a member at Sheffield’s Hallamshire Golf Club, made a promising start in his bid for glory on the resort’s redesigned North Course after carding an opening 73 to lie joint-second after the first round behind eventual winner Jamie Li. A second score of 73 and final-
round 79 meant Brown’s challenge faded as Li and Stoke Park’s John Gough fought out a dramatic finish, but he was far from downhearted at the end and is already targeting qualifying for the event again next year. He said: “I was disappointed not to challenge for the title in the end but it was a really special week. “I hope to come back next year and do what Jamie Li has done. I’m from the same club as Matthew Fitzpatrick so I knew about the Telegraph Championship after his win. It would be great to follow in his footsteps. Meanwhile, Northern Ireland ace Olivia Mehaffey, the world No 16 amateur, enjoyed a far less stressful time in the girls’ event as she brought the curtain down on her junior career in style by romping to an emphatic
Barclay Brown 16-stroke victory. And rising Yorkshire stars Olivia Hamilton and Megan Clarke aiming to use the experience of playing in the event to take their golfing careers to new levels. The teenagers, both members at Cleckheaton, struggled to find their best form, but Hamilton, from Bradford, said: “It was a quite amazing week in Portugal. I had never played abroad before and to gain the experience of playing a course like Quinta do Lago was brilliant. “The pins were put in really challenging positions but that just
added to the tournament and how strong the field was. Playing with my club teammate Megan Clarke on the final day was great. “We started playing together as seven-year-olds and we have both come on so far in that time.” Clarke, from Heckmondwike, added: “Playing the event, it just showed us what it could be like playing in a professional event and play in general. “It shows you how good people really are at this level. I just really enjoyed the whole week and I definitely want to try and qualify again.”

NORTHERN GOLFER 35
GOLFDEALS ALNMOUTH GOLF CLUB The stunning views and mature Harry Colt layout at Alnmouth Golf Club are widely regarded as some of the best in the region. The 6,449-yard course, set around Foxton Hall, was laid out by Colt in 1930 and provides a testing and enjoyable challenge to this day. Steep slopes and run off areas protect many of the greens and, despite the course’s coastal location, it has parkland turf and a reputation for the quality of its greens and excellent presentation. Since its move to Foxton Hall, Alnmouth Golf Club has had a Dormy House, which can accommodate up to 26 people. The facility is popular with travelling societies as well as visitors to the area and is a fantastic venue for a golf break. Alnmouth Golf Club, Foxton Hall, Alnmouth Northumberland, NE66 3BE, tel 01665 830 231, www.alnmouthgolfclub.com ALNWICK CASTLE GOLF CLUB Alnwick Castle Golf Club’s undulating parkland layout is a pleasure to play year-round, with stunning views across the countryside and out to the coast. The 6,200-yard course may be short by modern standards, but that doesn’t mean it’s not great fun to play – whether you’re taking it on with the driver or plotting your way around. It’s ideal for golfers of all abilities with several natural hazards including grass and gorse. Societies are very welcome here, and there is a range of packages including breakfast and lunch/dinner available. GOLFDEALS spectacular views extending up the Tyne Valley towards the Border Forest Park and Kielder reservoir. One of the oldest courses in England, Bellingham was founded in 1893 as a nine-hole course. Since then it has been extended to 18 holes and matured into a stunning track. The par of 70 ensures it remains no pushover, and the signature par four 12th is regarded by many as one of the best short par fours in the North East. For those travelling to Northumberland, or playing along the Tyne Valley, a stop over at the Riverdale Hall Hotel is highly recommended. The relaxed feel and hearty breakfast is perfect for those returning from a day on the course, or raring to get out there. BRANCEPETH CASTLE GOLF CLUB Overlooked by the stunning Brancepeth Castle, which dates back to the 12th Century, Brancepeth Castle Golf Club is a firm favourite of the Northern Golfer team. Just 15 minutes west of Durham city, Brancepeth was laid out by Harry Colt in the 1920s and requires accuracy from the tee and into the well-protected greens. This 6,400-yard layout is perfect for a society of mixed handicaps – tough enough to test the low-handicappers while a pleasure to play for all, and the bar and catering is sure to keep everyone happy too. GOLFDEALS DUNSTANBURGH CASTLE GOLF CLUB For those wanting a taste of the Northumberland links, there are few better options than Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Club. In Embleton Bay, in the shadow of the ruined castle, Dunstanburgh measures 6,298 yards with a par of 70. With views out over the North Sea, there are so many options for a signature hole at Dunstanburgh. However, one hole always stands out. The par three 13th is played in the shadow of the castle. At just 115 yards, the quarry short of the green should not come into play, but so often does - and is a great place for the nearest to the pin event. Dunstanburgh Golf Club, Embleton, Alnwick, Northumberland, NE66 3XQ, tel 01665 576 562, www.dunstanburgh.com HARROGATE GOLF CLUB The oldest club in Harrogate, this is a must-visit for those travelling to the area or lucky enough to live nearby. An easy walk, the tree-lined fairways of Harrogate Golf Club are well-defended by bunkers and copses ready to catch the unwary, and the many mature trees makes the course more difficult than its length suggests. The last six holes at Harrogate present a tough finish with a few potential card wreckers, including a quartet of par fours exceeding 400 yards. The signature hole 12 is perfect for the days nearest to the pin competition and is played from a raised tee to a tricky green. Harrogate Golf Club, Forest Lane Head, Harrogate, HG2 7TF, tel 01423 862 999, www.harrogate-gc.co.uk MIDDLESBROUGH GOLF CLUB Middlesbrough Golf Club occupies a spectacular parkland site five miles south of the city. The testing par 70 course winds its way through extensive woodland and was designed by legendary architect James Braid. The course exploits the natural ravines and undulating land at Brass Castle

GOLFDEALS and remains a stern test, despite the advancements in golf club and ball design. In 1990, new holes were built in woodland to create the layout you’ll find today, and since then the course has seen a number of improvements including new fairway bunkers and tee boxes, greens brought up to USGA specification, and the addition of two new ponds at the 11th hole which has been completely restructured. It’s a testament to the quality of the course that it has produced a British Amateur Champion in Martin Thompson, two Walker Cup players in Thompson and Michael Skelton, and a Brabazon Trophy winner in Jonathon Lupton. The greens here have been constructed to a modified USGA specification, which means you will find excellent surface right through to the end of the summer. It is also long enough at 6,663 yards off the back tees, 6,405 from the yellow tees, and 5,635 off the red tees to provide a real challenge. Romanby Golf and Country Club, Yafforth Road, Northallerton DL7 0PE, tel 01609 778 855, www.romanby.com ROTHBURY GOLF CLUB An old favourite of many locals and visitors, Rothbury Golf Club sits in the stunning landscape of the Coquet Valley and is surrounded by the Cheviot Hills. The ‘new’ course at Rothbury, on the site of the old racecourse, was opened in 2007 and is well-presented throughout the year. The 6,168-yard course is easy to walk, and a few minutes on the putting green are advised as the greens can be very difficult to read here. For those looking to build a great score, the signature hole seventh is a great chance for a birdie. With superb views along the Coquet Valley, a long iron to the bottom of the hill, followed by a short pitch to a sloping green or a higher risk drive over the hedge could get you there. However, avoid the bunkers at the back and, whichever option you choose, enjoy the view. GOLFERTIPS
IMPROVE YOUR BALL STRIKING
A key part of getting consistent results with your shots into the green is to strike the ball with the centre of the clubhead. To create a solid contact with your irons, the ball must be hit with a downward path. A number of amateur golfers try to help the ball into the air by ‘hitting up’. Rather than produce the desired result, this only leads to hitting the ground before the ball or thinning it. Try this drill to improve your ball striking with your irons.
STEP 1
Start by having your normal set up with the club but move the ball position forward so it is in line with your left big toe. From there make your normal backswing. The aim is from the top of your backswing to be able to strike the ball from the forward position. Try to repeat this three times.
STEP 2
Then revert back to the normal ball position whilst still trying to make the same movement as if the ball was in line with your left big toe. Repeat this drill several times to encourage the correct downward hit on the ball.

.WIN GOLF FOR FOUR AT BLYTH GOLF CLUB A stunning parkland layout in south east Northumberland, Blyth Golf Club is a must-visit for those who are yet to try it. With generous fairways and large greens, it may appear a pushover, but miss the fairway – or find one of the many bunkers defending the greens – and you will pay the price. For your chance to win answer this question: How many major championships has Gary Player won?
.WIN GOLF FOR FOUR AT TYNESIDE GOLF CLUB.
The picturesque layout at Alnwick Golf Club measures 6,200 yards and is a joy to play. Not the longest course in our region, the key here is good strategy and a hot putter.
Tyneside Golf Club is the oldest inland club in the North East of England, formed in 1879 and still regarded as among the finest parkland courses in the region. At a shade over 6,100 yards, Tyneside may not be the longest course in the area but it is certainly considered by many to be a stern test and one of the premier courses in the North East. Tyneside boasts a challenging, though enjoyable, 18 hole layout renowned for the quality of its greens.

BULKING UP FOR WINTER With autumn renovations completed on our greens, tees, approaches and fairways, our main focus now is to ensure that the golf course is ready for the winter months ahead. With already reduced daylight hours, declining temperatures and adverse weather predictions, it is vital that the turf plant is ready for these changes. It is therefore necessary to understand the turf plant and what nutrients it requires to reduce stress and maintain plant health throughout the coming months. Firstly, any fertiliser that is applied at this time of year should contain low amounts of nitrogen and increased amounts of potassium. Nitrogen promotes soft leaf growth which needs to be mown more frequently and can reduce carbohydrate reserves within the plant needed for the winter, causing stress to the
plant and increase the chances of disease attack. Potassium, on the other hand, helps to promote and strengthen cell membranes, thus improving tolerance to stress from the cold conditions, wear from golfers and can aid against the threat of disease. Calcium and magnesium are also fundamental nutrients to help with strengthening of cell walls and winter hardiness of the plant, thus aiding wear and stress tolerance. These nutrients mentioned above are collectively known as macronutrients, and needed by the plant in larger quantities than their counterpart, micronutrients. Some of these nutrients may only be needed in minute quantities. The most frequently used nutrient in this group is iron, which is used throughout winter to trigger a colour response, but it is also used to dry the plant surface which helps to inhibit fungal activity.

bunker Last month we reported the achievements of Rebecca Ferguson and Stewart Fell – who recorded victories in the ladies, men’s and mixed club championships at Tynemouth. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to speak to Stewart last month, but we’ve tracked him down. He said: “It was great to get another club championship under my belt. To win for a third time was a great feeling. “We went on to win the mixed final which was fantastic playing alongside my girlfriend. Our games complement one another really well and we tend to make a really strong team. I’ve been playing a little bit longer than Rebecca so I tend to be
the one keep us calm and focused on each part of the game.” Congratulations again Stewart, and Rebecca, and best of luck for next season!
The above picture came in from Golf East Lothian, organisers of the first Saltire trophy event – part of Scotland’s Golf Coast Festival October 18-24. The picture shows some of the 30 competitors in the inaugural event, which was held over Gullane
No 1, [venue of the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open 2015], Longniddry, Dunbar and The Renaissance. In the centre is Malcolm Duck of the East Lothian Golf & Tourism Alliance holding the Saltire Trophy. For further information go to www.golfeastlothian.com/festival

Welcome to your reader feedback page. We want to hear your likes, dislikes and funny golfing stories, and if you’d like to make suggestions about Northern Golfer, let us know. We want to hear from you! Newcastle United Golf Club’s Tommy Campbell has been in touch to tell us about his successful defence of one of his club’s most prestigious events, the Curley Cup. Tommy said: This is a board competition at my club that I won last year with a gross score of 87 -21 handicap - a nett 66 winning by 1 shot. To my surprise, playing in the comp this year in very windy conditions, as the holder I felt very nervous and at the half way point I had a gross score of 47 and appeared to be losing my grip. Feeling a little more relaxed, I shot a gross 40 on the back nine for a total of 87-20 nett 67 winning the comp for a second year in succession. As far as I know, apart from our club championship and seniors comps, I don’t think this has been done before so as you can imagine I am looking forward to our presentation night! I have also joined the seniors section this year having reached the ripe old age of 60. If, like Tommy, you’d like us to feature your success in Northern Golfer, please get in touch. You never know, you may see your name in lights!
