EDITOR’S NOTE AND CONTENTS Judging by the number of club golfers holding up trophies in this issue, the season is in full swing. It may only be June but already county champions are basking in glory across our region with courses in great condition thanks to some long overdue sunshine. Regular readers will know how we like to feature up-and-coming young golfers and this issue is no exception. Our cover star is Rebecca McGinley, officially one of the world’s longest drivers, and this month she shares her ambition to make it big on tour. The county championships which have been held so far are also dominated by the young guns, showing the game is in good hands in the North East and Yorkshire. It is great to see so many pros connected with the region doing so well after Danny Willett’s success in The Masters. Matt Fitzpatrick is making a concerted bid to be part of the Ryder Cup squad after another success on the European Tour. Meanwhile, Ryder Cup veteran Lee Westwood has enjoyed a bright start to the season and will almost certainly be off to the US to represent Europe for a 10th time. He took time out of his busy schedule to tell us his thoughts about the event and hint at a future captaincy. Westwood was joined at the Have a Heart Trophy charity golf day at Close House, which raised more than £500,000, by current European captain Darren Clarke. See how many famous faces you can spot on Page 29. Finally, I want to pay tribute to someone many of our golf clubs know so well. Our advertising manager Gillian Corney, who has been with the magazine from the very start, is stepping down. She is respected across the region having spent many years selling golf, bringing great deals and offers to our pages and enabling us to produce this magazine for you to pick up for free. Gillian can call many of those working in our golf clubs friends as well as customers. She has been fantastic to work with. I and many others are going to miss her terribly but I am sure you will join me in wishing her health and happiness as she spends more quality time with her family.

Success Storey Ami wins her fifth Northumberland county title
A
mi Storey’s fifth Northumberland County Championship victory was far from routine. First, she found herself well down the list of the 16 qualifiers for the matchplay, something she isn’t accustomed to. Secondly, she was also uncharacteristically nervous in the final against Tynemouth’s Rebecca Ferguson, The standard of golf throughout the championship at Whitley Bay was remarkable considering the appalling weather, and the final lived up to its billing with some of the best golf of the event. One down early on, Ami was one up around the turn and three up at one stage on the back nine. She then lost 17, where she was bunkered, and then three-putted the 18th after hitting the green in
two leave the final all square after 18 holes. “It was the most nervous I’ve felt and that includes the national events I’ve played in,” said Ami. “I nailed my tee shot at the 19th - I couldn’t have hit it better and just had 125 yards to the green on a par five.” That tee shot led to a winning birdie - with Rebecca finding the trees left trees and having to hack out - and a fifth title for Ami, who is looking to concentrate on club and county golf from now on. “I played for Great Britain in Scotland and I think I’ve got as high as I can possibly go,” said the 27-year-old Close House player. “I’ve had 10 years travelling nationally and I just want to play at club level for now - I can always go back to competing at national level if I feel like it.”

Andrew Gibson with the Northumberland County Strokeplay Championship
Gibson outlasts Ridden to lift the Northumberland County Strokeplay Championship
T
he Northumberland Golf Club’s Andrew Gibson outlasted county number one Phil Ridden in a three-hole playoff to pick up the Northumberland 72-hole Strokeplay Championship at Arcot Hall. Gibson, who returned rounds of 68,70,70 and 71 for a one under-par total, matched Ridden over four rounds (6771-72-69) before heading back onto the course for extra holes. Playing the aggregate playoff over the loop of the first, 18th and first, Gibson made an incredible par at the 18th – holing a putt of some 40ft before making birdie at the first to win the playoff and pick up his first county win.
Gibson, who will not compete at the County Championship later this month at the City of Newcastle having injured his back, said” To get my first county win, in one of our toughest events, is a great achievement. “The conditions were tricky on Saturday but my game plan of finding the middle of the greens and taking what I could get with the putter really paid off. To play with Phil in the final two rounds was a fantastic experience. He put the pressure on early in the final round, but I was able to grind out the score and finish strongly in the playoff. “I’m disappointed to not be able to compete this summer through injury, but with the County Championship at
Northumberland in 2017, there’s a lot to look forward to.” Meanwhile, Alnmouth’s Jake Storey finished third on one over-par while England international Matty Lamb, from Hexham, finished in fifth place on three over-par. Next up in Northumberland, Jack Hermeston will defend his County Championship at his home club, City of Newcastle, also home to Ridden – England’s lowest-handicapped golfer.

ris Rae is the new Durham County champion, and it may take some time for the 24-year-old from Crawcrook to fully appreciate what he achieved at Wearside Golf Club. Rae held off the pursuing pack, which included the England MidAmateur Champion Richard Aisbitt seeking a hat-trick of county titles and England international Richard Walker playing on his home course. “This is a bit bigger than winning the midweek medal at Tyneside,” he joked. “I worked hard on Sunday to block out the scores and just focus on myself.” The title was Rae’s to lose after he posted rounds of 71, 74 and 70, and was on course for a closing 69. Playing the 72nd hole, he blocked his second shot into the trees. That shot led to a bogey, but was enough for a three-shot win over Seaton Carew’s 16-year-old Cameron Wallace. “It could have been a lot worse when I went into the trees. I chopped out and played a nice shot into the green and putted out,” he said. “Fortunately I had made a couple of birdies on the back nine, as well as
making birdie at the third and the sixth, which was a tough hole, so dropping one at the last didn’t matter too much. “It’s fantastic to win with so many really good players in the field.” Rae’s previous biggest win was the 2012 Tyneside club championship, but he has been in the Durham County side and had been hovering around the big events. “Consistency has been the thing with me,” said the plus-one handicapper, who started playing at Ryton aged 10. “I’m hoping this will be the start of more and I have already had a call from the county captain to play in the next match. “Then there will be the County Champion of Champions at Woodhall Spa later in the year too. I want to build on this win and compete at the top level regularly.” Wallace’s performance is also worth noting. The Seaton Carew player turns 17 this month and he left much of the field behind to finish two shots clear of Juan Miguel Heredia, a Durham University student who plays out of Brancepeth Castle and who won the British Universities and Colleges Sport Golf Tour Final.

Flying High Wynyard golfer Rebecca Horner returns from the US to clinch second title
R
ebecca Horner flew back from the US to snap up the Durham County Ladies title for the second time. The 20-year-old from Shildon was back home from the University of Troy, in Alabama, and served notice she was after the crown she first won as a 15-year-old when she led the qualifiers for the championship at Bishop Auckland. The scoring in the qualifying event was excellent with Rebecca, who plays out of Wynyard, shooting 148 followed by Alexandra Stevenson and defending champion Jessica Hall both on 152. Bishop Auckland won both the gross and nett team prizes with Lesley Jennings winning the best over-30
qualifier prize and Alexandra Stevenson named the leading junior qualifier and best nett winner. In two very close semi-finals, Rebecca and Jessica Hall went through to contest the final which went Rebecca’s way 4&3. Rebecca is on a scholarship at Troy University, and is a member of the golf team which has won the Sunbelt Championships in 2014 and 2015. She is in her fourth and final year in Alabama and hopes to stay in America after graduating to teach golf professionally. She’s also no slouch when it comes to playing as she proved when she won the county title at just 15, and last year she also won the prestigious Pleasington Putter with scores of 73 and 71.

Swashbuckling performance Youngster equals course record at Middlesbrough
J
ames Swash looks like one to keep an eye on. The 16-year-old from Teesside, a member of the England U16 Training Squad for the past three years, equalled the Middlesbrough course record with a six-under-par 66 in the first round of the Moores Trophy. James, who has been working with England coach Steve Robinson, of Sandburn Hall as part of the England training squad, says he knew it could be his day when he was in a spot of trouble on the sixth. Playing his third shot at the par four hole, he holed out for a birdie from 92 yards. The 66 was always
going to be a possibility after that, and considering the form James has been in. The year started well with a two under-par score at Lindrick in an England Squad match, followed by a one under-par 71 on the Championship Course at Hawkstone Park in the England U16 Squad Championships. Having represented Yorkshire at U16 level, he is now in the U18 Boys Squad. However, there will be a bit of a break from golf as he is now sitting his GCSEs at Egglescliffe School. He also plans to be at Egglescliffe College for a further two years
James Swash in action before deciding where his next steps might be. His goals this season are give a good showing in the Carris Trophy in July at Hunstanton Golf Club, and then in the North of
England Youth Championships at his home club Middlesbrough in early August before playing in the British Boys in late August at Muirfield and The Renaissance Golf Clubs.

Scarr wins his way to prestigious Trilby Tour Grand Final
N
igel Scarr is still on cloud nine after winning the William Hunt Trilby Tour Scottish Championship. The Durham City-based seven handicapper came through at Dalmahoy to qualify for the Grand Final on August 31 at Forest of Aden. The win was his first outside the region, and outside his home club - where he has won a couple of competitions. Playing off a handicap of five at Dalmahoy in the stableford event, Scarr was round in level par for 36 points. In the three-hole playoff he was one under-par to win and go through to the National Finals. “The day started full of nerves but they soon disappeared after walking up the first alongside my caddie Colin Carr and with my dad Sydney,” said Nigel. “Although I made a bogey at the first, I soon got into the swing of things mixing five pars with two
bogeys and one double bogey. The first nine holes gave me 15 points, which considering we played off the white tees, I was very happy with. “The back nine started with two pars, then I had two bogeys, then two birdies before finishing par, bogey, birdie. When we signed the cards I realised the excellent 21 points I had just scored on the back nine. “We then had to wait four and half hours before the start of the threehole playoff and we were surrounded by cameras and quite a crowd of people following.” Nigel parred the first and after pitching to two feet, birdied the second. While he bunkered his approach at the last playoff hole, the 18th, he came out to 5ft and had two putts for the win. “Elation is an understatement and the presentation, speech, interviews and photographs were all great. In nearly 30 years of playing golf it’s by far the best experience I have had,” added Nigel.

Top of the Class Porteous joins ISM’s Class of 2016
I
nternational Sports Management has launched a new sponsorship scheme to help five Tour players on their road to the top of the game, including Northumberland’s Garrick Porteous. The programme sees partners invest in the up-and-coming quintet of Porteous, Thriston Lawrence, Haydn McCullen, Jack McDonald and Billy Spooner. DWB Wealth Consultancy, Enterprise, GoPro, Irish Biltong Co, London Sport Exchange, MyProtein, Pond Mobile, Savills, The Entertainer, Adaris and TW Steel will back the players as they compete during the season. Garrick will focus on the Challenge Tour, while Thriston, Haydn, Jack and Billy will be
looking to underline their growing reputations on the PGA EuroPro Tour. Garrick, who finished second at the Red Sea Egyptian Challenge Presented by Hassan Allam Properties earlier this season, said: “I’m looking forward to a busy schedule on the Challenge Tour this summer following a great start to the year in Egypt. “The aim is to get into the top 15 in the rankings and get out onto the European Tour for next season. I’m a lot more comfortable out here now having experienced it before, and I’m focusing on playing golf this year and making that next step. To receive this sponsorship package is fantastic.” ISM chief executive officer Chubby Chandler said: “We believe this is a great way to connect new
Garrick Porteous (left) with the Class of 2016 and Chubby Chandler (third from right) partners with our best young talent. “They will be involved in every step and share the highs and lows of what promises to be a memorable year for these young lads. “In years to come these companies may be able to boast about having been involved with one of the world’s leading players at the very start.” Meanwhile, Daniel Gavins has
joined the ISM team. The 24-yearold Yorkshireman secured his card for the European Tour by coming through all three stages of Qualifying School, winning second stage at Lumine and finishing eighth at the Final Stage at PGA Catalunya. Daniel has experience of the Challenge Tour and finished seventh on the 2015 PGA EuroPro Order of Merit with nine top-10 finishes.
EAGLESCLIFFE GOLF CLUB Founded 1914
Nestled beside the River Tees with the Cleveland Hills as a backdrop, the course has been described by Golf Monthly magazine as a ‘hidden gem’ of English golf. This 6289 yard James Braid course is both picturesque and demanding due to the nature of the rolling terrain and sloping greens which provides a challenge for both novice and experienced golfers alike.

Nation looks to our region to improve its golfing prowess
N
orway has turned to North East professional Gordon Morrison to boost its bid to reach the top of world golf. Morrison is best known for being able to work on the yips with players - the nightmare putting and chipping affliction all golfers fear - but he’s much more than just a mental game guru. An Advanced PGA Professional, he is currently based at Linden Hall in Northumberland, and is now engaged as a psychology and motor learning adviser to Team Norway Golf. Morrison is well-qualified for the role with a Masters in sports psychology from Northumbria University, and is currently studying for a PhD through Birmingham University. “I ran a seminar last year for the coaches and Norway subsequently asked me to work with the junior squad,” said Morrison, “but I’ve now been asked to work with both the pro
and amateur squads in Oslo during the summer and in Spain in winter. “My remit is to develop upto-date training techniques with a view to increasing the players’ skills and improve the players’ concentration levels. “It’s all part of a four-year plan to develop the best possible training programme to produce tour golfers who will represent Norway on the world stage.” Norway has 10 PGA professionals employed full time to deliver the programme - among them former Tyneside pro Geoff Dixon, who is from Westerhope originally. Morrison, who hailed from Ireland but now lives in Felton, Northumberland has been at Linden Hall for the past eight years, though the new role looks like taking up much more of his time. “Teaching golf for the last 20 years has shown me what works and what doesn’t,” he said. “I have worked to improve my knowledge year on year.”

Work began last year and the results have been fantastic with members and visitors delighted by the progress. This is one step in a longerterm plan to improve the overall golfing experience at Seaton Carew. “Better management of rough, improving on-course drainage to address flooding of bunkers during the winter months, as well as the general aesthetics around the course are all areas we are addressing. “It would be remiss of me not to mention the changes we are seeing in the clubhouse too. We have a new bar manager and chef, who are providing an excellent service with good quality food.” The greenkeeping staff reduced the amount of thatch on the greens, making the ground firmer. The treatment that has followed has got the greens rolling much quicker at the start of the summer season and they will improve further naturally. The work will not stop there.
Seaton’s greenkeeping team There is a longer-term objective to remove coarse blade grasses (bent and rye) and replace them with the finer grasses ( fescue). Seaton Carew, which has hosted prestigious amateur events such as the Brabazon Trophy and the Carris Trophy, has consistently been rated as one of the top 100 courses in the UK and everyone at the club is determined to keep it that way. Junior golf at Seaton Carew
is also heading in a different direction after pairing up with a fitness instructor. The academy golfers at Seaton Carew, under the watchful eye of club professional Clifford Jackson, will also have a new man helping them with the launch of the Junior Golf Endurance Boot Camp with personal trainer Nathan Renwick. The cost is £3 per person and the programme will run for six weeks.

The duo, who were also in the three-man team along with Jack Richardson which retained the Durham County Clubs Championship last year, were playing in the Cleveland Salver and Silloth Scratch Open - events which count in the Yorkshire Order of Merit and Cumbria Green Jacket Series, and came up with a course record and a victory. Andy won the Silloth title with rounds of 72 and 73 on an extremely tough day in a quality field with most of the Cumbria County squad.

South Moor celebrity day goes down in history
S
outh Moor is claiming a world first after the team who won the inaugural South Moor Masters tournament engraved the trophy themselves before taking it away to hold for a year. It was unusual enough that the manager of Branson Trophies in South Hylton, fervent Sunderland football fan David Jenkinson, had agreed beforehand to go to the club to engrave the trophy on the day. The tournament, sponsored by Pin Point Recruitment, involved media teams which included a celebrity. The golf club secured David an invitation to play for a
team entered by The Golf Paper featuring Ritchie Pitt, who played for the Sunderland team which won the 1973 FA Cup. “I could not believe it when we won,” said 51-year-old David, a member of Wearside Golf Club and secretary of the Northern Karate Association. “I have never known a golf club ask for an engraver at a tournament outside a major. I’ve also not heard of any engraver anywhere in the world engraving a trophy after winning it themselves. It was a fantastic event with a great atmosphere. The excellent course, exceptional food and hospitality was
Ritchie Pitt, David Jenkinson, Alan Findlay, of sponsors Pin Point Recruitment, Eddie Thompson and Andy Waple second to none. “I was thrilled to be playing with Ritchie Pitt – and he was impressed with the Sunderland badge I have tattooed on my right leg. “Andy Waple was our star on the course with three birdies. There is a bit of history to the trophy – it is a lovely silver cup which was originally presented to the now defunct Newcastle Press Golfing Society in 1937.”
Two other Black Cats Wembley heroes, Jimmy Montgomery and Dick Malone, were in the field at South Moor along with former Newcastle and Republic of Ireland star John Anderson and Bryan ‘Pop’ Robson. Durham cricket’s Geoff Cook, ex-boxers Billy Hardy and Glenn McCrory and regional TV newsmen Ian Payne, Jim Knight and Roger Tames also trod the fairways.

Bradford - 125 years of great golf Alan Hedley needed every club in his bag as he took to a challenging, and historic, course
B
radford has been described as having an inland links feel. It’s a description that sits well with this intriguing and often demanding course. There is an excellent mix of par fours, five of them more than 400 yards, while there are just three par threes and two par fives on the undulating 6,303 yard par 71 layout. At 325 yards, the opening hole would normally be considered easy, but with out of bounds down the right and trees left, you 16 NORTHERN GOLFER
have to be straight to leave a short second to a blind green. The second, the first of the par fours over 400 yards, is a good driving hole but, again, there is a blind approach to the green to contend with, while the short third is all about an accurate tee shot to an elevated green avoiding the pond and bunkers. A classic risk and reward par four of 280 yards follows. There is a boundary wall on the right running the full length of the hole
with trees left and three hidden bunkers, plus a green which slopes back to front. However, some will simply not be able to resist having a go! The fifth is stroke index one, a par four of 461 yards, and is a dogleg right. The safe line from the tee is left, which leaves a longer second, but it opens up the well-guarded green. A shorter par four follows - it is quite narrow and accuracy is key here. The seventh is another big par four of 444 yards and many rate this as the toughest hole. It sweeps right to left up the hill to a long green guarded by three bunkers. A new bunker to the left at eight requires a careful drive to give you a chance with the approach to a steep false-fronted green before arriving at the first par five to end the front nine. The ninth is long enough at 491 yards and there are trees all the way down the left side with out of bounds to the right. Beware the three fairway bunkers, while Willow Lane also crosses the fairway - the hole rises steeply up to a plateau green.
COURSEREVIEW
FACT FILE
The start of the back nine is not easy with trees and out of bounds right and more trouble left, plus a second shot over a ridge to a blind green, but you’ll probably forget all that when you stand on the tee at 11. The view across Baildon Moor is spectacular and at 307 yards, the big hitters may well be inspired to have a go at the green. An excellent par three follows with its green perched on Greenhouse Hill and played over a valley. The 13th is a generous driving hole but there are fairway bunkers to worry about and four more guard the green - a fine hole which is followed by a challenging uphill par three with the green set into the face of Birkin Hill. The 15th is rightly judged to be the course’s signature hole (see fact file) and it heralds an excellent finish, with 16 a par four of 420 yards played from an elevated tee to a narrow, undulating fairway. If you go too far, you will have a downhill lie, not easy with the approach to a raised two-tier green. The penultimate hole is a sharp dogleg par five right with three new bunkers at the corner, a new bunker before the green to the right can catch an errant second shot as the fairway rises steeply to a well-guarded green. The tee shot is tight at 18, which plays uphill and doglegs right, but avoiding the trees and Willow Lane is important to be able to get at the two-tier green defended by a big tree and three bunkers.

Bradford is celebrating its 125th anniversary and the Hawksworth club is justifiably proud of its course which is mix of parkland, moorland and heathland. The officials are also very aware of its history, but have, wisely, chosen not to live in the past as evidenced by the improvements made to both course and clubhouse. Redesigned in 1923 by Herbert Fowler, who created Walton Heath and had a hand in improving Royal Lytham and Pebble Beach, Bradford has, over the past two years, been going through a review with Ken Moodie to include new bunkers, repositioning some others and changing some holes, but always with the original Fowler design in mind as well as taking into account the distances today’s golfer can hit the ball. A £350,000 clubhouse refurbishment in 2012 has also created stunning facilities including a patio overlooking the course
CADDY’S TIP Accuracy off the tee and a sure putting stroke is the way to score here SIGNATURE HOLE While the fifth and seventh are in contention, the 15th gets the vote. A 400-plus yard par four with the tee on the highest part of the course. There are some spectacular views over Bradford, but concentrate and get that drive away, avoiding the bunker down the right and you have a second shot over a ditch to a tough, sloping green
OUR VERDICT This is an excellent golf course which will see you use every club in the bag

England triumph
Counties clash North West dominates league table
T The victorious England team (© Leaderboard Photography) Yorkshire duo Jamie Bower and James Walker helped England to a 14-10 victory against France at Formby. County champion Bower (Meltham) and international newcomer Walker (The Oaks) contributed a singles victory apiece and Walker in partnership with Ashton Turner (Kenwick Park) also brought home a half in the foursomes. Masters champion Danny Willett, from Sheffield, played in the 2008 match and sent a good luck message to the team on Saturday night. England team captain Kevin Tucker said: “They were very pleased to receive it, and it was very good of the Masters champion to send it.”
he Northern Counties League title looks to be heading towards a showdown between Lancashire and Cheshire. Champions Yorkshire lost 10-8 to Cheshire at Sandiway in the second round of matches while Lancashire defeated Northumberland 11-7 at Alnmouth to go joint top while Durham lost by the same score to Cumbria at Barnard Castle. In the first round of matches all the clashes ended in 10-8 wins for Yorkshire, Cheshire and Lancashire, but Durham, Northumberland and Cumbria will feel they let chances of causing an upset slip. Lancashire and Yorkshire were both 4–2 down in the foursomes but came through in the singles while Cheshire were 5–1 up in the foursomes but almost blew it in the singles at Close House in Northumberland. Northumberland took the singles 7-5 with wins for Phil Ridden at the top of the order, North and South Trophy winner Mark Wharton, Sean Heads, Alex Dixon, Paul Caldicott, Seaton Wakenshaw and Chris Penney. Crucially, Ashley Sage and
Mike Harrington won the bottom two singles for Cheshire to breathe a sigh of relief with a 10-8 win. Durham claimed the foursomes 4-2 against Lancashire at Heysham but the home side won the top four singles and their last two for a 10-8 victory. Champions Yorkshire were exceptional in the singles at Seascale against Cumbria with six wins from the first seven games and a further two halves and a win from Jamie Harrison clinched the match 10–8. Lancashire edged the foursomes against Northumberland at Alnmouth by a single point then asserted their authority early in the singles by winning three of the opening four ties. Northumberland hit back to reduce the margin to one point mid-way but the Red Rose men stepped up a gear to comfortably get over the line 11-7. Durham trailed by a point at Barnard Castle against Cumbria after the foursomes and while Richard Aisbitt and Chris Handy gave Durham hope only Stuart Brown and Rhys Thompson were able to back them up.

atthew Naylor has joined Close House as the club’s new head PGA professional having worked at leading resorts in Scotland and Dubai, with some of the world’s best players. Naylor, who arrived in Northumberland having worked as a freelance coach in Dubai and at the Montgomerie Dubai, completed his PGA training at Turnberry in Ayrshire. “I’ve been lucky enough to work at two of the world’s best golf facilities and I knew I wanted to continue working at a club with world-class facilities and service. Close House ticked those boxes with the PGA Academy, its industry-leading technology and two fantastic golf courses.
“The warm welcome from the staff and members made it a really easy start here too.” Matthew’s career has also included work with some of the world’s best players, including European Tour player Steve Webster, with whom he travelled on the Tour. As well as working with elite golfers, he is looking forward to working with a range of players, and competing in the NENW PGA circuit. “I qualified in 2003 and have really concentrated on the coaching side of the profession. I get a lot of satisfaction from working with golfers and seeing them enjoy improving their golf – whether that’s someone picking up a club from the first time or someone looking to make it to the Tour.
Matthew Naylor “That’s our job as PGA professionals, working with everyone from tour pros to those starting out in the game. I’m
looking forward to a busy summer, meeting the members and getting them working on their game at the PGA Academy.”

REBECCAMCGINLEY
Driving Ambition
Big hitting is not the only thing on Rebecca McGinley’s mind. She tells Alan Hedley of her aim to make it big
K
eeping up with the boys on the golf course was a priority for the teenage Rebecca McGinley. Fast forward a few years and the 24-yearold from Prudhoe in Northumberland was smashing it 321 yards to win the first qualifying round of the American Golf Long Drive Championship. Despite torrential rain, Rebecca then put one out there 279 yards in the final to be crowned champion. Only five women made it through to the Grand Final, which was held at the American Golf National Academy at High Legh Park Golf Club in August last year. She then went on to finish third in the World Long Driving Championships in the USA, producing another couple of 300-yard plus efforts. “I’ve always hit the ball a long way,” she says. “You had to keep up with the boys when I was younger otherwise they wouldn’t play with you.” Being able to drive the golf ball a long way is no guarantee of lower scores, and Rebecca - two years into her professional career - says the concentration and work goes into the shots from 100 yards into the green and then making the putts. It’s a regime that’s working, as she proved with her best finish on the LET Access Tour in May with a closing 67, matching the winner Marca Parra for the lowest round of the tournament, in the PGA Halmstad Ladies Open at Haverdale in Sweden. The 67 gave Rebecca a top 10 finish and valuable order of merit points to move her inside the top 50. The next step is to make it into the top 20 to guarantee exemption into the final stage of Ladies European Tour qualifying school and. If she was to make it into the top five however, she would secure playing rights on the main tour for 2017 without having to go to Q school. “Getting into the top 20 would take a lot of pressure off,” says Rebecca, who started playing the game when she was 12. When she turned professional in 2014, she had a handicap of plus two, and has spent the last two years playing on the LET Access Tour where she has enjoyed some success. “I have had a few top 20 finishes and have
24 NORTHERN GOLFER
learnt a great deal. You don’t realise until you take the step up just what a huge difference there is between top level amateur golf and playing professionally.” Rebecca travelled to Casablanca last October to take part in the penultimate qualifying tournament for the Ladies European Tour and then to the school in Morocco, to play in final qualifying - where she just missed the cut for the fifth and final round. “I was proud to come through the event in Casablanca,” says Rebecca, who had Durham County player Graham Marchbank, with whom she won the Durham County Mixed Foursomes, on the bag. She’s also Godmother to Graham’s daughter. “It was one of those events where you have to keep your focus from start to finish because a couple of bad holes can destroy your hopes. The key is not to think too much about what could go wrong. “It will be huge for me if I get my card. I hear people saying they want to go out and win during their maiden season, if I get there my aim will be to make cuts. If you keep doing that you will eventually put yourself into contention to win. “The 67 in Sweden came after I’d been struggling a bit, but Susie, Graham’s wife, said to me ‘just go out there, hit it, find it, hit it again and the rest will take care of itself.’ “I do like to compete and hitting it a long way does help. It helps you to get to the par fives in two, but if you leave yourself with a 20ft putt and don’t do the business there’s not much point. That’s why I work a lot on shots from inside 100 yards and on my putting. “My next event will be the Boras Ladies Open back in Sweden. I made the cut there last year and I like the course. If I do well and finish in the top 10 again, and continue to do that for the rest of the season, then I’m not going to be too far away from my target. It’s a big ask, but I think I can do it. “The target may be to play on the LPGA Tour eventually, but it’s all about making progress and getting on to the Ladies European Tour - that’s my first goal.” Surprisingly, Rebecca did stop playing for a couple

REBECCAMCGINLEY of years, admitting she had probably played too much golf from an early age. “The break did me good. I came back raring to go and haven’t looked back. The last two years have been massive. I have two main sponsors, Simeon Jackson and Robert Broekhuizen and their companies Signature Fundraising Fragalistics, which takes care of all my costs and that’s great, it means I can concentrate on my golf.” Rebecca’s earlier clubs were Garesfield, Stocksfield and Durham City and she is currently attached to Wearside. “My dad John and my uncle Gary both play, my mum Karen doesn’t. “I think my dad was a bit surprised when I asked him for a set of clubs. I’d watched this kid across the road having a go and I thought ‘I fancy that’ but he wouldn’t let me try so I asked my dad if he would buy me a set…and he did.” Rebecca picked up plenty of wins at amateur level, and seven course records, as well as several county titles and she represented England too. But, where does all that power off the tee come from? “I don’t spend hours working in the gym,” she says. “I played a lot of football until the age of about 17 so I have
naturally strong legs, which helps me when it comes to distance. “My average drives are between 285 and 295 yards with the occasional one going past 300 yards, and I am lucky enough to be a fairly straight hitter.” She admits she entered the long driving event on a whim. “I saw an advert for the heats of the British championships and thought, ‘Why not?’ So I entered and managed to reach the final and I’ve been invited back to compete again this year. “It was an amazing feeling to get as far as the World Championships. Now I’m this country’s American Golf Champion and officially the third best female long driver in the world!” She admits that when she first stepped out onto the stage in Oklahoma she was nervous. “It was very different from the UK, with people shouting and screaming,” she says. “It took a little bit of getting used to but you end up drawing energy from them. “What started as a bit of fun has turned into an incredible, life-changing experience. I just need to work on my long drive swing and I’ll hopefully perform even better next time.”

TOUR LIFE
SIGNS OF LIGHT WITH EUROPEAN TOUR PLAYER CHRIS PAISLEY Last month I discussed my poor form and the importance of resilience. That resilience is still being tested, but I can see some light at the end of the tunnel. After playing poorly in Ireland and at Wentworth, I made the cut in Sweden. Although I finished well down the leaderboard, it was nice to be working on a weekend. It has been a difficult period. I love this game, but so far this season it has felt very much like a job. When you are playing well it feels like the easiest hobby in the world, and you get paid handsomely to do it. My approach has not changed. I am still working hard to get back on track. There were glimpses at Wentworth, where I was three under-par early in the second round, and in Sweden, where I shot one under-par after being three over-par through three holes. I have put a lot of work into the mental side of the game recently too. It’s easy to become engrossed in the technical aspects of golf when you are not playing well, especially for a perfectionist like myself. I know that my technique is not the problem - my swing looks the same on video as it did last year! So, what am I doing to sort it out? I am spending a lot of time working on visualising shots and trying to execute them. This gets me away from thinking about my swing too much. There’s a lot of information available in golf now, but it all comes down to your ability to see a target and hit the ball towards it. I am also doing simple things such as measuring myself on how well I commit to my shots, rather than the outcome of the shots. I am trying to get back to being focused on the process of hitting good shots, rather than results. This should allow me to play with more freedom, and if that happens, my scores will get a lot better and more consistent. My next tournament is in Austria, followed by a week off. I am then heading to Germany, France, and Scotland. Four great events to look forward to.

Westwood’s ryding high European Ryder Cup hero Lee Westwood shares his thoughts on a busy summer of golf and looks ahead to the Ryder Cup with Dean Bailey
W
ith a fifth top 10 finish in The Masters since 2010 under his belt, it’s no surprise Lee Westwood is looking forward to a busy summer of European golf. It’s also no surprise that Europe’s second-highest Ryder Cup points scorer has his sights set on September’s Ryder Cup at Hazeltine National. As things stand, the European team is shaping up to be an inexperienced one, but Westwood knows experience alone will not guarantee his place. “The goal is, and always has been, to make it into the Ryder Cup team from the points list and I’ve got the schedule to do that,” he says. “It’s shaping up to be a young team with some new players and Darren may need players with experience, but he has to pick players who are playing well. I wouldn’t want to go to a Ryder Cup if I wasn’t playing well – you want to play your best golf when you’re playing for 11 other guys.” Westwood, a veteran of nine Ryder Cups seven of them on the winning side, has a wealth of Ryder Cup experience to share with potential 28 NORTHERN GOLFER
teammates – and in more senior roles in the future. “I got to play with Nick Faldo in my first Ryder Cup – someone I’ve always respected and a player who has done everything in the game,” adds Westwood. “He was playing his 11th Ryder Cup and looking across the tee, knowing all the matches he’d been through, was very reassuring. Older players can share those experiences with the new guys, help make them comfortable and let them concentrate on playing their best golf.” Faldo leads the European points record with 25 points in his 11 matches, two points ahead of Westwood, though individual glory isn’t Westwood’s priority. “To be up there with another Englishman is a great honour and I’d like to get to the top of the European points list at some stage. But the Ryder Cup is all about the team and Europe being successful. I take a lot more pride in being part of seven winning Ryder Cup sides than I do in my own points total. “A Ryder Cup captaincy has been mentioned, and to be captain at some stage would be a great honour. I know Darren is
Lee Westwood
loving it, so I’d like to be able to lead a European side one day.” Ahead of the Ryder Cup, Westwood has a packed summer schedule with events across Europe and three more majors before the Olympic Games in Rio. “It’s always nice to be here at Close House, a place I’m spending more time now I’m back in the UK,” says Westwood. “I do my practising at the PGA Academy and have put in some good work since The Masters. “It’s a very busy summer with the majors moving up to accommodate the Olympic Games, and I want to play well to move up the World Rankings. I also need to show some form and catch Darren’s eye. My expectations haven’t changed too much following The Masters, which was a great result as I wasn’t optimistic going in after such a quiet start to the season. “There are some big tournaments coming up throughout the summer, on a number of golf courses I’ve played well on in the past. I’m excited to play the British Masters at The Grove later this year too. The European Tour and Sky Sports did a great job with the event last year and I’m looking forward to the event moving on to another top venue for 2017. “There aren’t too many tournaments in Britain now, particularly in England, so it’s nice to get out in front of a home crowd when we can and connect with the fans.” Following his second place finish in The Masters, Westwood finished 10th at the Irish Open, 15th at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth and in a tie for eighth at the Nordea Masters. He will be back in the UK to compete in the Scottish Open ahead of the Open Championship at Royal Troon.

Bold endeavour New club manager strengthens team at Boldon
T
here’s a new man at the helm as Boldon enter a new era with the appointment of Brian Hall as club manager. The 57-year-old takes over from Chris Brown - now at Hexham in a similar role - and Brian brings a wealth of experience to Boldon. An accomplished player and a former teaching professional at the club, he understands the needs of the members. He joins an already formidable team of Craig Parkinson, head greenkeeper, who has done a remarkable job since joining Boldon with the course gaining much praise for its condition, and Karl Strodl of Golfworx, who has brought his own brand of retail
expertise to the club. Simon Robinson complements the team by providing an excellent teaching service. Brian turned professional at the age of 16, and was NENW PGA Player of the Year in 1999. He’s also taught in Africa and was national coach of Gabon. “It’s exciting and I am looking forward to the challenges the job will bring,” said Brian. “We are very pleased with the direction in which the club is going. The clubhouse is looking good following the recent refurbishment, everyone is pleased with the new practice facilities - with a new six-hole short course coming soon, and our junior academy started this month with all juniors welcome to
Boldon Golf Club the coaching sessions.” The Get into Golf beginners course, which costs just £25 for five coaching sessions, is back this year too, and already fully booked. For more details visit www.boldongolfclub.co.uk

Now that our golf courses have completed their spring renovation work and have recovered, growth is more vigorous and thatch layers will start to build up again. Thatch is an organic layer comprising of both dead and living shoots, stems and roots which forms because the plant can produce this layer faster than it can be broken down naturally. It becomes a spongy, thick fibrous layer, and although a small layer of thatch has some benefits, if left to build up excessively it can soon lead to some serious issues. Extensive shallow root development can occur within heavy thatch layers and if warmth or drought was to occur it could soon lead to plant wilt and stress. Thatch layers can also hold excessive water within their profile, which can reduce the amount of
oxygen reaching the plants root system. This layer can also harbour insects and disease-causing organisms which can lead to further problems. To minimise build up it is vital to have a programme in place to control thatch levels. Use fertiliser and water adequately enough to maintain density, colour and growth without causing rapid growth and excessive build up. Although these methods will aid the control of thatch, it will need to be controlled with practices such as hollow coring and verti-cutting. Hollow coring helps to relieve compaction and allow air movement in the profile promoting microbial activity - aiding a faster breakdown of the thatch layer. Both of these practices physically remove thatch and with regular maintenance can control thatch levels effectively.

Matt targets Ryder Cup Impressive victory puts young Yorkshireman in the frame
Y
orkshire’s Matthew Fitzpatrick put himself into Ryder Cup contention when he won his second European Tour title in style. Victory in the Nordea Masters at Bro Hof Slott Golf Club was achieved in some style - and he and Masters champion Danny Willett could make it a Sheffield double in Darren Clarke’s European team. Fitzpatrick came into the final day with a five-shot advantage, and while he saw that cut to two by a charging Nicolas Colsaerts around the turn, he
kept his head on the back nine to sign for a round of 71 and a 16 under-par winning total. Fitzpatrick notched 10 top-10 finishes in his rookie season in 2015, including victory at the British Masters, and this latest victory will go a long way towards securing his place in Europe’s Ryder Cup team at Hazeltine National in the autumn. He said: “I’ll never forget my first win, but this is a special one for me as well. To win once, people might say that was lucky but to win twice and people might have a little bit more
Matt Fitzpatrick with the Nordea Masters Trophy (© Getty Images) confidence in you. So it’s nice to back that up. “It’s great to see some of those names on the trophy, like Nick Faldo, Lee Westwood and Luke Donald. “I think I noticed Tony Jacklin’s name on there as well, and there’s some great European players as
well, so I’m delighted. “I was just trying to stick to my game plan on the last day, as I didn’t want to chase. I thought that would be silly of me to try and do that. I think the first time I was able to really relax was once I found the green on the 17th.”

PRE-SHOT ROUTINE Watching the world’s best players, you will notice every player has a specific routine. Whether that’s Jason Dufner and his club waggle (seven waggles at the last count) or Jordan Spieth tweaking his cap before he approaches the ball, Tour players use these routines to make sure they are in the right mindset to hit each shot. When I am on the range, I’m thinking about swing technique, drills and how to improve mechanics. When I’m on the golf course, there are four key steps to my routine. 1 PICK A TARGET The key here is to analyse what is around you and pick a small, precise point beyond your target – a pylon, a bench or the corner of the clubhouse for example. Remember, aim small – miss small. 2 PRACTICE SWING The practice swing should be a relaxed rehearsal of the shot. Think about how you’re going to swing the club to produce the shot. For me, the number of practice swings I take depends how long it takes me to find the right feeling. 3 SETUP TO THE BALL The key here is alignment. There are a few different ways to do this – I tend to be happy to align myself to my small target in the distance. Some people like to pick an intermediate target 2-3ft in front of the ball. Use an alignment stick on the range and find the process which works best for you. 4 PRE-SHOT LOOK I take one last look at the target before settling into my stance and taking the club away. If you’re comfortable at this point, let it go. These steps work for me. Next time you’re practising, think about how you prepare for each shot and create a routine which works for you. 36 NORTHERN GOLFER

BORDERSGOLF PEEBLES GOLF CLUB Widely regarded as one of the most picturesque courses in Scotland, Peebles lies in the heart of the beautiful Borders countryside. With a modern clubhouse and an enjoyable but challenging layout, Peebles offers a great day out. The club moved to its current location, the Kirklands course, in 1908 and was remodelled in 1934 by Harry Colt, who was also involved in the architecture of illustrious venues such as Wentworth, Sunningdale, Stoke Poges, Royal Portrush and the Eden Course, St Andrews. The par three seventh hole at Peebles, Colt’s Choice, pays homage to his legacy. The par-70 course measures 6,138 yards and offers views of the town and surrounding hills, with a great variety of holes to test every golfer. Peebles Golf Club, Kirkland Street Peebles, EH45 8EU, tel 01721 720 197, www.peeblesgolfclub.com MINTO GOLF CLUB Established in 1928 and set in parkland on the lower slopes of Minto Hill, the course at Minto Golf Club faces south over the Teviot Valley and enjoys outstanding views of the surrounding countryside. The course at Minto measures a little more than 5,600 yards and, though short by modern standards, offers a mix of challenging holes - the highlights of which are the short fourth, where the green is protected by trees and the aptly named Everest - the 12th - where the fairway leads towards an elevated green. The clubhouse at Minto is friendly and with food and drink available, it’s the perfect place to relax after a day on the golf course. BORDERSGOLF MAGDALENE FIELDS GOLF CLUB Just north of Berwick, the beautifully manicured links at Magdalene Fields have been entertaining golfers for more than 100 years. Founded in 1903, Magdalene Fields Golf Club is the most northerly course in England. Just two miles from the Scottish Border, the initial layout of nine holes was designed by Willie Park Junior, the professional at Musselburgh who was responsible for 170 golf course designs throughout Europe, the US and Canada. The current layout, opened in 1974, is a favourite for visitors and holidaymakers with its stunning coastal views – northwards over Marshall Meadows Bay towards the towering cliffs at Eyemouth or south over the mouth of the River Tweed with Lindisfarne in the distance. It measures 6,574 yards from the back tees and is playable year round, making it an ideal location whatever the weather. AULD CROSS KEYS INN, DENHOLM For more than 200 years the Auld Cross Keys Country Inn has been at the heart of life in Denholm. Serving the community originally as a bakehouse and then as a coaching inn, the Auld Cross Keys is a local asset that is also making its mark as a popular choice with golfers visiting the Scottish Borders. Sean Craggs visited recently and wrote to say: “I have just stayed at the Auld Cross Keys, Denholm while playing Eyemouth, Torwoodlee and The Hirsel. We were looked after like VIPs and the food was of a very high standard, as was the cleanliness of the accommodation. With many courses in the surrounding area it makes a perfect base.” The Auld Cross Keys serves as a base for a short or long trip, with leading courses including Minto, Jedburgh, and Kelso all less than 25 minutes’ drive away. bunker When Phil Didsbury pushed his second shot deep into the woods in a Scottish club open little did he think it would turn out to be a shot in a billion. He was lucky enough to find the ball after a search – but there was something distinctly odd about it. The ball lay behind a tree covered in what appeared to be mud but he had to call his playing partners over to help identify it. Carefully he rolled the ball on the spot to reveal his blue identity mark, but the six handicapper said: “There’s something not quite right here. It doesn’t feel like my ball.” However, one hack at the ball later saw it finish even deeper into the trees and Phil then had to take a penalty drop. On lifting his ball Phil made a remarkable discovery. Wrapped around his ball was the outer shell of an old Titleist. It covered more than half the ball he was playing, which was also a Titleist. “It was so tightly jammed, I had a heck of a job peeling it off,” added Phil, a member at Blyth Golf Club in Northumberland who was playing in the Barbour Cup at the Dumfries and Galloway club. He finished playing the par four third hole with a triple bogey seven! The incident throws up some intriguing rules issues. If he hadn’t had a penalty lift would he have had to play his ball with the old cover on or could he have removed it? Would he have any sort of penalty for, in effect, hitting another ball, albeit damaged, or did it count as his ball regardless Anybody know the answer?

Ken Fearn has been in touch after winning our competition for a fourball at Longhirst. “Please find enclosed a photograph of myself and three friends, Mick, Dave, Brian. The round was courtesy of your magazine as I was lucky enough to win one of your competitions. A good day was had by all, good course, good weather and some good golf played, once again many thanks.” Pleased you enjoyed it Ken. This month’s competitions are on page 42
Steve Anderton picked up his 17th Backworth Club Championship in June – setting a new course record of 66 in the second round of the 36hole event. Anderton had held the previous course record before course alterations, having set it in the second round of his club championship success in 2011. Congratulations Steve. If you know of any other club champions with as successful, or even a more successful, run than Steve’s, let us know. Email editor@ northerngolfer.co.uk
