EDITOR’S NOTE AND CONTENTS As we say farewell to the summer and hello to the onset of winter, our thoughts are already turning to next season. It is fantastic to be able to report that the British Masters - featuring some of the world’s best players - will be in the region around this time next year thanks to Lee Westwood, Close House, the European Tour and Sky Sports. Far too few tour events make their way this far north, despite the magnificent courses, facilities and enthusiastic supporters we have here. To have so many familiar faces staying and playing in Northumberland is a great opportunity to show those who make the decisions what this region has to offer. The Ryder Cup proved to be a big disappointment for Westwood, and Yorkshiremen Danny Willett (bet he had something to say to his brother) and young Matthew Fitzpatrick but at least they were there to take part in what was an enthralling contest, deservedly won by the US. Speaking of familiar faces, Briony Bayles just can’t keep herself out of Northern Golfer. Having won the St Andrews Junior Ladies Open and featured on the front cover last month, the teenager has won our Junior Champion of Champions event. It proved to be a great day at Chesterle-Street, bringing together some of the best young talent from clubs across the region - congratulations to Briony. She and her fellow competitors got to see the extensive changes going on at Chester-le-Street first-hand and you can find out what is happening to the course on page 28. We are also delighted to be able to reflect on the success of Chris Paisley, who came so close in the Italian Open but did more than enough to secure his card. A particularly nice touch comes from the man who founded the Northumberland Junior Golf Association - of which Chris is a graduate - who sent in a letter of congratulations. Read what Chris Robinson has to say in From the Bunker. Meanwhile, Paisley joins our own Alan Hedley in paying tribute to the King - Mr Arnold Palmer - who passed away in September. Mr Palmer is credited with bringing golf to the masses, arguably setting the wheels in motion to make the game what it is today. Thanks Mr Palmer. See you all next month. Alan Ainscough Europe may have been second best at Hazeltine, but South Moor Golf Club was a winner with its Ryder Cup Showcase Tournament. Held on the same weekend as the Ryder Cup, members represented Europe and invited guests to play for America, with Europe coming out on top 10.5 points to 6.5. The event also marked a turning point for the club, where members have instructed head greenkeeper Alan Ainscough and his team to reduce the deepest rough on the course to make it more playable for the average golfer. Tournament organiser Paul Butler said: “Our heathland course at South Moor was designed by Alister MacKenzie, who created Augusta National - so we are being careful to stay true to his design.”

A hole lot of bother

South Moor junior’s rules error costs him place in history by inches, but not the championship

Whickham Golf Club officially opened its new Hollinside Academy with a gathering of local community visitors, club members and the area’s sports facilitators. Delivered through a grant of £75,000 from Sport England’s Inspired Facility Funding and a further £36,000 of self-funding, the facility includes a short game area, three covered driving bays and a Teaching/Practice Suite fitted with the latest GC2 Simulator. The club also officially welcomed its new PGA professional David Forster. 04 NORTHERN GOLFER

S

outh Moor’s Josh Hogarth missed out on setting a course record at the Co Durham club in bizarre circumstances. As the season closed for the 15-yearold, who has won the South Moor junior title and the Durham County Junior Golf Society Championship, a rules error at South Moor’s par three 14th cost him a place in the record books. His perfect six iron approach at the 186yard hole finished resting against the flagstick – however, what happened next cost him a record round of 64. “If I had known the rules, it would have been a hole-in-one,” said Josh, a pupil at North Durham Academy in Stanley. “I thought you had to pull the flagstick out keeping it directly upright. When I did that, the

ball squirted out and ended up an inch from the hole.” Josh only learned days after the tournament ended that the relevant part of The Rules of Golf (rule 17-4 reads): “The player may move or remove the flagstick”. That allowed him the option of manoeuvring the flagstick to determine whether the ball falls into the hole. “I signed for a two on the scorecard instead of one,” said Josh. “I’ll put it down to experience. It’s a lesson learned.” The record was set by Norway’s Jarland Ekeland Arnoy during the England Boys Under-16 Open at South Moor in 2011 and has since been equalled by home club players Ian McEntee and Paul Davison, and Josh with his round which included 10 birdies and three bogeys.

Dinsdale duo triumph in Lombard Trophy

N

ikki Dunn has wasted little time in inscribing her name in The PGA’s record books. The Dinsdale Spa assistant pro may be in just her second year at the Durham club but she teamed up with club member Sue Kiddle to become the first winners of the WPGA Lombard Trophy. Nikki may be new to the pro ranks but she represented Yorkshire and England squad as an amateur, and spent four years playing college golf in the US before turning pro. Her experience was in evidence at Pestana Vila Sol in Portugal as she and 18-handicapper Sue won the inaugural women’s Lombard Trophy. Tied on three under-par with Ormskirk and Wike Ridge golf clubs after the first round, the Dinsdale Spa duo prospered while their rivals faltered.

Wike Ridge pair Eleanor Robinson and Gill Swaby-Ward remained on three under-par while Ormskirk’s Ali Gray and Sara Fitzgerald finished a shot further back. The Dinsdale duo reprised their opening round of 69 to post a tournament total of six under-par and win the event by three shots. Boasting a shot advantage over Wike Ridge at the turn, the whiff of victory grew stronger as the homeward leg of their journey unfolded. Four birdies on the back nine tempered by two bogeys ensured their grip on the trophy, and £2,500 winner’s cheque, was never loosened. “We played steadily, playing one shot at a time and didn’t get ahead of ourselves,” said Nikki. “We worked well as a pair. When one of us was needed we stepped

Nikki Dunn and Sue Kiddle in. It’s a great start to my career as a pro and I’m delighted Lombard and The PGA have invited women to play in this. It’s something else women can get involved in and make our mark.” As Sue confirmed, Nikki is doing just that in her role at Dinsdale Spa. “I’d never played in anything like

this before,” she said. “When Nikki said we were through to a regional final I said ‘I can’t play in that’. “The comfort she gave me was telling me it was a betterball and not greensomes or foursomes. “I’m thrilled she persuaded me to play and I’ve enjoyed every minute.”

Consett off to sunny Spain Team bidding to win the Mail on Sunday Classic after superb run

C

onsett will fly the flag for the region in Spain next month. The Co Durham club is through to the finals of the Mail on Sunday Classic after a thumping quarter-final win over Scottish champions Lochgelly. The Consett squad will fly out to the El Rompido resort in Spain for the finals on November 19-26 along with Kenwick Park, who ended Yorkshire’s interest in the tournament with an extra time win over Cleckheaton, as well as Porter’s Park and South Staffs. The draw for the semi-finals is yet to be made but they will be

on November 22 with the final the following day. Being at home to Lochgelly was a clear advantage, but the Consett team have had their fair share of away ties and had to win at Hobson and Garesfield in the first two rounds before being at home to Matfen Hall. They then won at Ryton, at home to Penrith, a marathon away to Chester-le-Street where the deciding match went to the 23rd hole before John Kennedy sealed the result, then they beat Swanston and Lochgelly at home. That quarter-final result was 4-1 with Lochgelly only managing two halved matches - against

John Kennedy Consett’s top two players Mark Bonser and Kennedy while James Newton won 2up as Brian Wigwam and Mark Dorrit had thumping wins

6&4 and 5&4. Consett will now be trying to become only the second North East team to win the event following Seaton Carew in 2014.

I kept giving myself chances and knew i had a chance when I holed a few putts early on. “To end the season doing what I’ve worked on for so long, giving myself chances as often as possible and staying focused on playing each shot, is a great feeling. I can’t wait for the start of next season now.” George Washington’s Aaron Scott finished in third place one one under-par as Will Marshall (Heworth) and William Nimmo (Chester-le-Street) finished in the top five.

onathan Caldwell finally landed his first HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour title, taking home the Clipper Logistics Championship at Moor Allerton with three birdies in his final four holes. Caldwell (Clandeyboye: 70, 64, 69) has finished inside the top five on eight occasions in five years, but beat Kevin Harper (East Devon Golf Club: 69, 69, 66) holing a nervy short putt for the title in Leeds. The win lifts him inside the Race To Desert Springs top five, a position which is rewarded with a 2017 Challenge Tour card at the end of the season. “It feels great,” said Caldwell, who took home £10,000 along with a new Motocaddy S1 Lithium trolley, Bushnell Tour X Range Finder and Bolle Sunglasses. “It has been a long time coming after a few near misses, so it feels special. “It is satisfying to win with birdies at three of the last four, rather than to stumble over the line. The top five has been a goal of mine throughout the year, and I have done that now – better late than never.” The top 60 on the Race To Desert Springs will now be invited to play the season-ending Tour Championship at Desert Springs Resort in Spain.

Among those invited to the season-finale, which carries an increased prize fund of £90,000, are a number of players from the North East and Yorkshire. With £20,000 going to the winner, any one of the 60-man field could finish inside the top five and earn promotion to the Challenge Tour. Sheffield’s James Maw leads the contingent in seventh place on the Race To Desert Springs. James Wilkinson (Penrith Golf & FootCare Centre), Joe Dean (Hillsborough Golf Club), Jonathan Thomson (Rotherham) and Alex Wrigley (Hartlepool Golf Club) are also inside the top 15 and know a good end to the season could see them secure promotion to Europe’s second-tier tour.

The HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour has announced it will stage its first event of the 2017 season on the Lee Westwood Colt Course at Close House, the first time the tour has shared a venue with the European Tour in the same year. The tournament will be the third time Europe’s third-tier satellite tour has visited Close House, and is set to take place in the final week of April. Details of the tour’s full schedule will be announced over the winter, with more North East venues expected to feature. Barry Hearn, chairman of the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour, said: “Close House is one of my favourite golf venues and I am thrilled that the EuroPro Tour will return there in 2017 in a continuation of a great long-term relationship. “Of course, we are excited to see Close House host the British Masters next year but we expect the EuroPro Tour event to deliver just as much excitement when we return in April.”

Jackson’s mission

Pro launches academy to get more youngsters into golf

R

oss Jackson is launching an ambitious double project to boost junior golf in the North East. The Ingleby Barwick pro has long been a driving force for junior golf and his achievements were recognised by the Golf Foundation when he won the Bonallack Award. The former Stressholme and Blackwell Grange pro received his award at Wentworth and Brendon Pyle, the Foundation’s chief executive, said: “More than 3,000 children have had a taste of golf at school and 200 of them have been coached at his academy.” Now Jackson hopes to build on that with the Ross Jackson Golf Foundation and the Ross Jackson Golf Junior Tour and he’s enlisted help from Arc Finance director James Sloan and Ladies European Tour player Ellie Givens. “Such is my passion and dedication for junior golf I am starting up a junior foundation and a junior tour,” said Jackson. “The idea behind these organisations is to provide a sustainable platform for junior golf development

in the North East. Both are non-profit organisations with all proceeds going to coaching or tournament initiatives.” The Foundation will deliver monthly coaching initiatives and events, free coaching and give all ages and standards access to the sport - at golf clubs and in the community. The junior tour will have 10-12 events during 2017 with a Grand Final and presentation event, and will be aimed at all ages and standards as well as bridging the gap between mini tours and junior opens. “The aim of both projects isn’t just to provide short-term assistance,” added Jackson. “I want to establish both organisations with the longevity that will spearhead junior golf development in the region when I am pushing up daisies! “I’ve been fortunate to enrol a trustee for the foundation in James Sloan, who is director of Arc Finance, Health, Wealth, Estate Agents and Ellie has agreed to be a junior tour ambassador/mentor. “We are looking to increase awareness and attract commercial partners and sponsors to help establish, grow and develop both organisations.”

he region’s best professionals have been in full swing this month, with great scoring on some of the toughest courses as the season builds towards its final few events. Morpeth pro David Clark and Andrew Richardson shared top spot in the circuit’s Tour Championship at Matfen Hall with rounds of one underpar. Ross Crowe, Gary McLure and James Wilkinson shared third place a shot further back. Craig Goodfellow posted another low round of the season to win the Brampton GC Pro Am. His round of 64 was four shots better than the five players tied in second place - Crowe, Darren Crowle, Mark Ridley, Philip Waugh and Mathew Webb. Goodfellow said: “It’s been a good year with some steady golf throughout. To get a good win at Brampton with

another low score, following a great win at Hexham at the end of August, has turned it into a decent year. I’ve been hitting a lot of greens and, when the putts start dropping, I know I can go low. We’ve got a couple of more events and I’m looking forward to going into the winter with some confidence and a good plan for working on my game.” September was also a successful month for Martin Forster, who won the Middlesbrough Municipal Pro Am with a round of 67, before sharing top spot three days later with Gary Vickers in the following event at Bellingham with a round of 68. Forster said: “To get back-to-back wins, for the first time, as the season comes to an end is fantastic. I’ve had a few highs this season, but not done too well in the pro ams so it was great to pick up a couple of titles before the end of the year. To win consecutive titles at

Martin Forster Middlesbrough is a great feeling, on a course I really enjoy. Then to head to Bellingham, where I coach every week, and play with two players I’ve worked with was another high.” It’s also been a good couple of weeks for Simon Robinson – who built on a second-place finish at Ramside with consecutive victories in the NE/NW PGA Pro Am at Matfen Hall (68) and Bishop Auckland (67). Ryan Ingram and Goodfellow finished in second place a shot behind respectively. At Ramside, South Moor pro Mark Ridley was on top form, finishing two

Craig Goodfellow shots clear of Clark and Robinson with a round of 66. The season concludes with the Archerfield Autumn Pro Am and Portugal Pro Am this month, and the final matches of the season-long matchplay event. For the latest results go to www.nenwpga.co.uk

A full-time golf coach for 28 years, Robert opted for a career change 11 years ago when he purchased a franchise of Granite Transformations, a firm specialising in high-end granite worktops and kitchen installations. During that time Robert enjoyed life as an amateur golfer and represented Durham County Seniors and finished seventh in the Northern Counties Seniors Championship at Woodsome Hall. With his business firmly established and a capable team in place, he’s ready to coach and has embraced all the technological changes that now

dominate the world of golf instruction. He said: “To be back teaching at Ramside is fantastic. It has been my second home from first walking through the door 20 years ago. To have seen Ramside grow into an amazing facility over these years has been a wonderful experience. I am looking forward to seeing some of my old clients, lots of new ones and some of the young starters I introduced to golf who are now all bigger than me! “Golf coaching has developed over the years, with technology helping to get the message over to the pupil, but techniques come and go and always seem to come around again, but if the club strikes the ball correctly and consistently your game will improve. “My task is to get the golfer there and I will be 100% committed to their game improvement. I am looking forward to the challenge ahead, putting plenty of smiles on lots of faces and silverware on the mantelpiece.” He joins PGA Professionals Kevin Jackson and Steve McNally coaching at Ramside Golf Academy and is available for swing lessons, video analysis and short game coaching.

Houghton book ref Clattenburg launches new facility at Durham club

H

oughton Golf Club had Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg on hand to make sure everything was onside as the Durham club launched its new practice facility. Sport England grants helped Houghton to create three covered practice bays, two golf warm-up nets and a six-hole short course which incorporates five all-weather greens and an original green. It’s hoped the facility will encourage new players to take up the game and be home to those who want to improve with it open to local schools and wider community groups. Clattenburg, originally from Consett and now living in Newcastle, said: “This fantastic facility will be a huge asset not only to Houghton-le-Spring but the whole local community. “I believe it will encourage new

participants to golf as well as those who wish to improve their game or return to the sport but on a shorter course. “I am looking forward to using the facilities with my family and I would highly recommend anyone looking to get into golf comes and tries out these facilities.” Clattenburg carried out the official opening of the new facilities and his tee shot on the first was inches away from a hole-in-one. The launch was attended by numerous guests who had taken an active part or supported the golf club during the bidding process. There were representatives from Tyne and Wear Sport, Active Sunderland, VCAS, local school representatives, England Golf county development officer Phil Graham, Durham County Secretary Jonathan Ward, as well as others from

Mark Clattenburg supporting local companies. The day also saw some of the club’s wee wonders play their first round on the new six-hole course. Huxley Golf designed and supplied the five all-weather greens to complement an existing natural green.

Neil Fowler, projects manager at the club, said: “We would like to thank Huxley Golf for giving us a short game area to be proud of. “We are delighted with the result and extremely confident that it will help our Club go from strength to strength.”

Last year’s Finals Day

Rabbits keep on running Dean Bailey looks ahead to the finals of the Rabbits and Inter leagues for 2016

T

he North East Rabbits Golf Association season is heading to an exciting conclusion as the best clubs and individuals in the seasonlong Rabbits and Inter leagues head to their respective Finals Days in October. The Inter league ( for players with handicaps from 8-15) concludes with its Finals Day at Rockliffe Hall, bringing together the winners of the three divisions – Roseberry Grange, Ripon City and Blackwell Grange and best runner-up Stocksfield. Meanwhile, the Rabbits league ( for handicaps 16-28) concludes with its Finals Day, also at Rockliffe, bringing together the winners of its four divisions – Roseberry Grange, Kirkbymoorside, Houghton-le-Spring and Thirsk & Northallerton, plus the best runnersup – Malton & Norton and Bishop Auckland. Both events will also include individual events for the leading points scorers from each club (determined by their best three scores throughout the year), who will compete for the title of NERGA/INTER Individual Champion. Association secretary Martin Hill said: “We’ve grown the league again in 2016 and the feedback from clubs new and old has again been very positive. We’re now one of the biggest golf leagues in the country and, with

more clubs looking to get involved, our growth is set to continue, which will mean clubs can play more venues and meet more new people in our region. We’re looking forward to both Finals Days at Rockliffe Hall, with more than 100 players competing over the two days. The league was set up to get midhigh handicappers playing regular, inter club golf and to provide that to so many people is fantastic. “As well as offering a competitive format for golfers, we’re incredibly proud of being able to support each club through the match fees and the secondary spend in the clubhouse.” Formed in 2010, the Rabbits league comprises 33 clubs in four leagues, while the Inter league features 21 clubs in three divisions. Each club hosts a tournament round for their respective division, where each team – represented by eight players - compete in a stableford format with the best seven scores counting towards the team’s total. The leading team in each division, as well as the bestplaced runner-up, then head to Finals Day. We’ll have a full report from both events in November’s edition. Thompson, Ridden and Lowe win county order of merit titles ounty golf ’s marathon men for 2016 have been crowned as Durham’s Rhys Thompson, Northumberland’s Phil Ridden and Yorkshire’s Kealan Lowe have ended their county seasons top of their respective orders of merit. In Durham, Rhys Thompson narrowly pipped Richard Aisbitt to the title to make it two wins in a row. In the final event of the season at Brancepeth Castle, with Thompson not in the field, Aisbitt needed a top two finish to topple the Boldon Golf Club player. He fell just short, missing out on second place on a countback to finish just 10 points behind top spot. Thompson said: “To win the order of merit for a second year is a big result. Our events are incredibly competitive, with so many players capable of winning throughout the year. “I was a long way back before the Big Six, which I won, to jump right up. I followed that with a win at Ravensworth go get to top spot, and from

there tweaked my calendar to play Rockliffe Hall. With a couple of events to go I thought I was safe, but Richard played some great golf and I only just managed to get over the line. “To win is a huge boost. I’ve worked hard to become a more consistent player and winning the title back-to-back is proof that work has paid off.” In Northumberland, Phil Ridden led the way with victory in the County Championship’s qualifying rounds - The Renwick Medal - and strong showings throughout the year. He said: “I’m glad to win after an up and down year. The Renwick Medal and breaking the course record at the City of Newcastle in the process was a big highlight. It’s a bit of a surprise to pick it up having missed a few events, but I’m really happy to round of the season with the title.” Meanwhile, in Yorkshire, Wheatley’s Kealan Lowe won the season-long points race ahead of Moortown’s Ben Firth and Malton & Norton’s David Hague.

Durham golfer secures transatlantic success

A

s the US triumphed in the Ryder Cup in Minnesotta, Europe’s Fightmaster Cup team retained their transatlantic prize at the Indian Wells Golf Resort, Palm Springs, California. The biennial contest, which features the best one-armed players from Europe competing against their North American counterparts, featured Durham golfer Steven Hutchinson – a member of Barnard Castle and part of Ralph Givens team at Blackwell Grange. Hutchinson, who played in three matches, securing a singles point as Europe retained the trophy with a 15-13 win, said: “We’ve given the US a bit of a thumping in the last two matches so went in with a lot of confidence. It was a lot closer this year and the

Americans put up a great fight. This was my first away match, having played in 2014 in Stirling, and the experience was incredible. “The final day was tough going, the temperature was up at 39 degrees and it took more than six hours to get round, but winning the trophy for a second time was incredible. The rivalry is strong but we’re also great friends.” Winner of the English & Welsh Open in 2015, Hutchinson added: “My handicap has just gone back up to 12 this season but I’ve had a decent year in the national events and some low scores at Barnard Castle. I made the matchplay finals of the World Championship and I’ll defend my English and Welsh title in October so it should be a good end to the year.”

Tynemouth has everything Dean Bailey stays close to home and finds a classic track in great condition

I

’m lucky to live within a few minutes drive of some of our region’s finest parkland clubs, with challenging layouts and classic tracks available every weekend. An old favourite, and one with a great history having celebrated its centenary in 2013, Tynemouth Golf Club offers everything a golfer wants on a Sunday morning in late September – an inspiring sight from the tee, good quality greens to end the playing season, not too tough a walk, and a good Sunday lunch.

18 NORTHERN GOLFER

The start at Tynemouth is far from easy. The 400-yard-plus par four requires a drive between deep fairway bunkers – a recurring feature here – with the practice ground and out of bounds right. The green at the first, like many here, has subtle borrows and breaks which require a keen eye to work out. At the second and third, the ravine which runs through the heart of the course makes its first appearance. At two, lay up short of it and the fairway bunker right to leave an unobstructed

view of the green. At the par three third, anything short will fall back into it leaving a tough pitch. With few places to bail out – a steep drop left and cavernous bunker some 10ft below the green right – finding the green is a must. The par four fourth, fifth and sixth holes each present good birdie opportunities should you find the tree-flanked fairways. At five, the longest of the three holes, the approach has to carry the ravine to find the putting surface while six may be in reach for the longest hitters, who must avoid the cross bunker 60 yards from the putting surface. The par three seventh features the best green on the course, one Nick Faldo would argue has elephants beneath it, with its severe mounding and huge slopes making for the trickiest putts on the course. Heading towards the turn, the eighth is a tough par five with water right of the landing area. The second shot is again played over the ravine to a well-guarded fairway with three cross bunkers. The green here is large, though two deep bunkers protect its front edge. The ninth and 10th are both worthy of signature hole. Played over and parallel to the ravine at its deepest point on the course, the

COURSEREVIEW

FACT FILE ninth got our nod (see fact file). The par four 10th, though slightly shorter, is the trickier of the two. Played uphill from the tee, the line is difficult – play away from the steep fall off left and there’s a good chance you will run out of fairway to the right. The 11th is a tricky par three defended by deep bunkers, while the 12th is a great par five, with a huge fairway bunker left an imposing sight while out of bounds guards the right side. Two more huge bunkers await a misplaced lay up to the right of the fairway. Anyone making it to the green in two has played two superb shots here. The back nine at Tynemouth features many tricky drives, guarded by trees and fairway bunkers. Out of bounds waits right at the 13th, where anything too far left will find tall trees and leave a tricky punch out which will be caught by the ravine just short of the green. The 14th deserves its stroke one billing with the most difficult tee shot. From the back tee, it must make the 250 yards to the corner of the 90-degree dog-leg right, but be less than 280 yards as the fairways runs out. Anyone risking a longer shot, and cutting the corner, is likely to find the thick rough and tall trees which guard the right side. The final stretch at Tynemouth is very scoreable, with the short par four 15th requiring a solid tee shot avoiding the water right of the fairway, though there is plenty of space at this 368-yard hole. The 16th is the best birdie opportunity. Lay up with a long iron between the imposing fairway bunkers 230 yards from the tee to leave a short iron to a well-bunkered green. The 172-yard par three 17th has a generous green, though anything short will find a tricky bunker shot over a steep face. At 18, a driver will leave just a short pitch, while a sensible play with a long iron will avoid the fairway bunkers. Two more bunkers wait at the front edge of the green, while the car park awaits anything which flies the green.

Tynemouth has developed throughout its 103 years, with new holes constructed in the 20th Century as land was acquired and improvements made to the practice ground with covered bays in more recent times. The developments are set to continue with the first of three phases of drainage work recently completed, and work continuing on developing approaches and green surrounds to enhance natural run-off areas.

Knowing your yardages will make a big difference. Work on your pace putting on the putting green, the greens here are big and good touch will save a lot of shots. SIGNATURE HOLE The 372-yard par four ninth at Tynemouth is the most visually inspiring hole on the course. Played over the ravine at its deepest point, the drive requires a carry of at least 170 yards, increasing as you head towards the green. Tall trees guard the right of the fairway should you play away from the ravine, while the green is tricky to read and protected by three bunkers.

OUR VERDICT An easy walk, the fairway bunkers and devilishly difficult greens offer great visuals and a tough test with the putter – what more could you ask for? NORTHERN GOLFER 19

Ladies go so close It was nearly a double for Yorkshire but the White Rose ladies team had to settle for runners-up spot to Gloucestershire, who became English Women’s County Champions for the first time in their sixth consecutive final, thanks to a 5-4 victory. The South West champions made their move early when they won the foursomes 2-1. In the afternoon, the first two singles illustrated the great determination of both teams. Alex Giles finished her game par, birdie to win the last two holes and snatch a half for Gloucestershire. Then Alison Knowles produced exactly the same finish to grab her half for Yorkshire. Behind them, the players were trading blow for blow. Gloucestershire’s Bethan Popel won the clash of the England internationals, beating Olivia Winning 3&2. Megan Clarke replied, winning her game 3&2 for Yorkshire. Yorkshire’s Rochelle Morris was on course for a 2&1 win in the bottom game and the outcome of the championship rested on the clash between Gloucestershire’s Becky Gibbs and Hannah Holden. Gibbs won the 16th to go 1up with two to play. She lost the 17th after her drive found trees on the right but she took charge on the 18th, reaching the green in regulation three shots to win the hole and her match 2up.

Red rose triumph Lancashire gained some revenge for losing out to Yorkshire in the Northern Counties League when their seniors won the Northern Counties team strokeplay at Morecambe. Trevor Foster had the best individual score with 70-68 as Lancashire totalled 713 to Yorkshire’s 723. Cumbria were third on 730, followed by Cheshire on 746 and both Durham and Northumberland finished on 753 with the Isle of Man bottom on 784. 20 NORTHERN GOLFER

Y

orkshire won the English Men’s County Championship for the 21st time, beating Hampshire by two points in a final day showdown at Sandwell Park in Staffordshire. Although Yorkshire dominate the list of past winners, this is their first victory for nine years and the victory was sweet, especially after the boys’ and women’s teams narrowly lost their county finals. Team captain Darryl Berry, who has played in two winning sides, said: “This is great for the team and for all our supporters. It’s been a brilliant team effort, the lads have been great.” Yorkshire set up their win with an excellent foursomes performances, winning 2.5 of the three available points. “That was massive,” said Berry, who sent his top players out in the singles with instructions to get their points as quickly as possible. Steve Robins and Kealan Lowe, playing in the first two games, duly obliged as both won 3&2. Robins was bogey-free and five under-par when he finished, while Lowe, the Yorkshire

order of merit winner, sank a 4ft putt to close out his match. Hampshire had the momentum in the next three games with Billy McKenzie fighting back from 3dn at the turn to beat Bailey Gill 2up. He was followed by Ryan Harmer who, having been up most of the way against Yorkshire champion Ben Hutchinson, was pulled back to all square with two to play but managed to win 1up. English champion Dan Brown was beaten 3&2 by Hampshire’s Mark Burgess and Yorkshire’s hopes of that extra point were pinned on the match between Will Whiteoak and Hampshire captain Martin Young. Whiteoak held a 1up advantage for most of the back nine, helped by holing a monster putt for a half on 14. He held on to that slender lead, holing a good putt from 10ft on the last to finish 1up. “We wanted to win outright and that’s why I put Will at the back,” said Berry. “He’s a pressure man and he brings it home every time.”

In the third round, they jumped up to fourth on 13 under-par, with scores of 70 from Gregory and 67 from Plant, who gave the team a boost with an 18th hole birdie. By then, the Australians were on 32 under-par and clearly heading for the title, but England were only three shots behind second place. In the final round it fell to Bower, the Brabazon Trophy champion from Meltham, and Plant, the Lytham Trophy winner, to provide England’s counting scores of 70 and 66 respectively. Bower’s highlights included a chip-in for birdie on three and a fine par save on six where he holed from 15ft. He set up a two-putt birdie when he reached the long 13th with a drive and a four-iron and then holed a 35ft putt for birdie on 16. On the last he took a three-wood from the tee, but pulled his six-iron approach to the left of the green. However he chipped up to 12ft and holed the putt for a vital par.

MEETING MR PALMER European Tour player and Palmer Cup player Chris Paisley: “I was lucky to meet Mr Palmer at the Palmer Cup in 2009 at Cherry Hills, where he won the US Open in 1960. We’d heard a couple of days before that he would be visiting, and we assumed we would get to shake his hand. What we got was an unforgettable experience – a chance to sit and chat to Mr Palmer as a team for more than an hour. We asked so many questions, and to hear from a legend of the game, who didn’t have to spend time with us but chose to do so, was remarkable. He talked about flying himself to events so he could make it home on Sunday nights to see his family, and the one piece of advice he gave, which I keep to, is to make sure people can read any autographs you do. He was a proper gentleman, one the greatest in our sport, but also open and genuine when you met him. It’s remarkable that he maintained that throughout his career and explains why so many found him truly inspiring.”

Arnold Palmer

The King who was Mr Palmer

Alan Hedley met Arnold Palmer and pays tribute to the King of golf who died in September

T

here was a sense of inevitably about America’s Ryder Cup triumph at Hazeltine. Coming less than a week after the death of Arnold Palmer, the US won back the Ryder Cup which has eluded them for much of the decade…and they won it in style. Mr Palmer would have approved. The King would have loved the way the US played. He would have approved even more of the spirit in which the American and European players conducted themselves - apart for the occasional bout of over-exuberant celebration – though he too expressed himself passionately on the golf course. Mr Palmer, who won 22 of his 33 matches in the biennial competition between the United States and Great Britain & Ireland as it was then, also served as captain in 1975. He made golf popular with the masses and his legion of fans - Arnie’s Army – weren’t always a model of decorum. Jack Nicklaus came in for a fair amount of abuse when he challenged the King for his crown.

But Mr Palmer was simply loved by everyone. He wasn’t perfect - he famously had a bit of a temper - but he did have time for everyone. I was lucky enough to meet him at The Masters in 2000. It was my first trip to Augusta and I was understandably nervous and anxious not to drop any clangers. It was at a function for some of the European and British media and I was introduced to Mr Palmer for, I supposed, a bit of an audience. It wasn’t like that at all. He was charming, funny and even a bit risqué with one of the waitresses and it was probably one of the best half hours I’ve spent in golf. I met him again a couple of times at The Open in company with other journalists again, and what struck me was how much time he was willing to give us and how he would answer any and every question and look you straight in the eye as he did it. A truly great man and, like European legend Seve Ballesteros, he leaves a void that cannot be filled.

Lee Westwood tells Dean Bailey of his pride that the Northumberland resort, where the courses bear his name, is to host the European Tour’s British Masters in 2017

T

he world’s best professionals will return to the North East for the first time in more than decade when Lee Westwood hosts the European Tour’s British Masters at Close House Sept 28-Oct 1 2017. Announced during this year’s event at The Grove in Watford, hosted by Luke Donald, the tournament will head north to the Northumberland club, which has been represented by Westwood on the international stage since the launch of the Colt Course in 2010. “It’s been a lot of hard work with the European Tour and with Graham (Wylie) and his team, to get the British Masters here. I’m sure it’s going to be a great occasion for Close House, for the area, and for the North East,” said Westwood. “It will be very different to host a tournament for the first time, but I’m looking forward to welcoming people here. People in the North East are passionate about sport, whether it’s football, the Great North Run or golf and it’s fantastic to bring a world-class golf event here, and to northern England.” The 43-year-old, a past winner of the Great North Open, has championed bringing the event to the North East since he, Donald, Ian

Poulter and Justin Rose became British Masters ambassadors in 2015. The tournament will join the Open Championship, which takes place at Royal Birkdale, as one of the North’s biggest sporting events in 2017. “There haven’t been too many tournaments in the North of England so to have the Masters and the Open Championship in our part of the world next year will be fantastic and hopefully generate a lot of interest,” Westwood added. “The event is a little bit different with the extra things we put on with Sky Sports on the range and after the day’s play. Golf has to try different things to make it an even better experience for the fans. They really engage with the clinics and the feedback has been great so I’m sure that will only enhance the experience.” The Lee Westwood Colt Course, which hosted the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship in 2015 and the EuroPro Tour in the last two seasons, has undergone a programme of development in preparation for the event, with further alterations to the Scott Macpherson design, which overlooks the Tyne Valley, planned in coming months. “It’s been interesting to be part of developing

GOLFERNEWS the course with a view to the world’s best players coming here,” said Westwood. “We’re not only looking at the British Masters, but the club golfer as well. I think the changes will enhance what is already a great golf course.” The alterations to the course, overseen by golf course and estates manager Brian Clark, have seen new tee boxes added on five holes, while bunkering has been altered to change landing areas and green complexes. Greens have also been enlarged at the second and 12th holes to provide tournament pin positions. Work will continue in coming months to improve drainage, while the rough will be brought in to present a tougher test to the leading players in the world. The largest change to the course will be in its routing for the tournament. The uphill par four fifth hole will become the first, while the par three fourth, with its stunning views back across the Tyne Valley, will stage the finale of the event. Close House owner Graham Wylie, who bought the property in 2003, said: “We are incredibly proud to bring the British Masters to the North East, a place I am passionate about championing on the international stage. To bring the European Tour to the Colt Course just six years after it opened is remarkable. “Bringing Lee on-board to open the course in 2010, and then as our attached professional, has been a huge part of our story. Lee has championed our cause and has been instrumental in bringing the tournament here. We were honoured to be considered for the event and, following work with Lee, Brian and the European Tour, we have invested in alterations to the

course required to host the event.” For Wylie, welcoming the world’s best golfers is the final step in inspiring people to take up the game. “We have always wanted to be a club for golfers of all abilities, from those picking up their first club through to those competing for the world’s most prestigious titles. “Lee has played a big part, our work with the PGA and becoming home the North East’s only PGA Academy has been part of that, and hosting tournaments is all part of inspiring people to take up the game and maybe

one day make it to the top level. “Golf needs to be welcoming and inspiring, and we’ll be continuing our work across all levels of the game in the coming 12 months and well beyond 2017. “Come and support the tournament. Show that the North East can put on an event to rival anywhere in the UK. “The course will be challenging, the golf will be excellent, and we want to see people here taking in the experience and cheering on the players.”

Sunderland teenager named regional winner of Sport England programme

S

underland golfer Charlie McLelland, 11, has received the North East’s Sportivate Participant of the Year award for his commitment to getting involved in sport. Sportivate, a Sport England funded programme, encourages young people who are not particularly sporty to get active. Having played little sport before, Charlie completed introductory coaching sessions through the programme, organised by Sunderland City Council. He is now a member at George Washington Golf Club and taking part regularly. Charlie said: “I’d never really had an interest in sport until I tried golf thanks to Sportivate. I’ve really enjoyed the sessions and they have inspired me to carry on playing more golf at my local club. I’m really honoured to have been named North East Participant of the Year and my next ambition is to play in a tournament.”

Sportivate gives 11-25-year-olds who are not participating in sport in their own time access to six-to-eight weeks’ of free or subsidised coaching in a range of sports. Once the coaching sessions are completed, the participants are matched up with a local club or venue where they can continue to play. David Marrin, assistant director at Tyne & Wear Sport, said: “It is great that Charlie has been recognised for his achievement. Thousands of young people have already taken part in a wide range of sport sessions across Tyne & Wear and many of them have gone on to join local sports clubs and increase their activity levels, which is what the programme is all about. Continue to look out for Sportivate activities taking place near you.” Charlie is one of more than 780,000 young people who have attended Sportivate sessions across the country with more than 650,000 completing their coaching sessions.

The Singapore-based 54-year-old is IMG’s global head of golf course management and course design, which includes overseeing a large international portfolio of world-class golf courses. Burley, described the accolade in the latest APAL (Accreditation for Professional Achievement and Learning) awards as one of the highlights of his career. “It’s an honour to receive PGA Master Professional status and have my name added to a small, elite group of pros. I’m very proud to be a PGA member and have actively promoted hiring PGA Members throughout my career.”

Boost for Ravensworth Ravensworth Golf Club is set to receive £27,097 in funding from the SUEZ Communities Trust (formerly SITA Trust) for the replacement of machinery. The funding will replace the club’s vertidrain machine. Club secretary Alan Heslop said: “The wetter weather of recent winters has made it increasingly difficult for golfers to carry on playing particularly through the winter months. The funding will play a vital role in preventing the course from becoming waterlogged. The course is open to the whole community and this will ensure that we can provide access all year round.” 28 NORTHERN GOLFER

Revamp is on course Chester-le-Street plan is taking shape as phase one nears completion

C

hester-le-Street Golf Club is moving into a new era thanks to a radical improvement plan put together by Ryder Cup golfer Ken Brown. The original course in the shadow of Lumley Castle in Co Durham was built in 1908 and designed by two Open Championship winners in Sandy Herd and Ted Ray. In the years since, technological advances in the game diluted its original strategy and

challenge - a problem faced by many clubs and Chester’s answer was to call in Ryder Cup golfer Ken Brown, his Creative Golf Design partner Ken Moodie and North-East based arboriculturists John Nicholson Associates. The trio have produced a plan which the club and its members have bought into and which involves carrying out substantial woodland management and remodelling the course.

Third green before (left) and after (right)

Fourth fairway before (left) and after (right)

GOLFERNEWS Work has already started on seven holes - it was originally meant to be six, but a substantial donation from a club member, who wishes to remain anonymous, means another hole can be added to this autumn’s programme. The holes involved are the first and second, and 10 through 14. Club secretary Colin Henderson said: “There are some dramatic enhancements in store for these holes and the plan now is to address seven holes instead of six during this phase. “This is great news which has only been made possible by a very generous donation. Many thanks go to that individual.” Brown has been a regular visitor to the club as is Moodie, with Nicholson keeping an almost daily eye on the work which has seen strategic removal of trees to improve the look and playability of the course. Brown said: “The club has taken on quite an ambitious project and it is to be congratulated for that. Chester-le-Street is a cracking members’ club with a nice course, nice clubhouse and a great environment to play golf. They have everything going for them and they are making sure they keep their eye on the ball. “You need your course and club to be a place where people want to come and visit. Chester has lovely views, a river and a course with lots of variety and the club know there are a lot of things you have to do to keep it up to standard. Chesterle-Street deserve credit for seeing the value in that.”

The restored view of Lumley Castle from the golf course The changes - which involved removing a number of trees - required a felling licence and authorisation from English Heritage, both of which were granted following a detailed application from the club. The work will be carried out in stages with members kept informed by regular bulletins. It’s another major step forward for Chester-le-Street, which built a new clubhouse some 18 years ago after the course was further developed in the 1990s with the acquisition of land alongside the River Wear on which six new holes were built. The current work will bring the river into view from many holes and all 18 holes will be improved. There will 23 new bunkers, while 37

bunkers will be remodelled or reshaped and 12 will be removed, some of them replaced by mounding. Fairways will also be reshaped, some greens extended and the length of some holes will be changed to create an improved balance to the two nines. This month work starts on two fairway bunkers on the 10th hole and four bunkers on the first hole. Next month the construction of new features on the remaining four holes in phase one will completed. With the majority of the tree management now completed there has been much favourable comment on the improvement to the views on the course, especially those of Lumley Castle.

After quite a lot of articles talking about frustration, staying patient, progress, and process, I can finally write about a huge success - my third place finish at the Italian Open. It was my best performance as a pro to date, and a very important result for my career. I have secured my job as a European Tour player for another year. It was a massive week for me for many reasons, and you can read more about it on the next page. Thank you to everyone who has supported me, the messages I have received since that week have been overwhelming and humbling. Enough about that, let’s talk Ryder Cup! Where do I start? Other than the fact we got spanked, what an incredible event! I know there were some negatives (I’m looking at you, PJ Willett, and those few idiotic American fans) but the level of golf was off the charts. People (myself included) cannot fully appreciate how difficult it is to perform under that much pressure and scrutiny, but the boys certainly delivered. The Americans were simply better on paper and on the day. Most significantly there was an enormous gulf in class on the greens. I know some folks may not have liked the ‘unruly’ nature of the event, but I loved it. It was nice to see a little bit of WWE-esque atmosphere thrown in for a change! The way the players were reacting after holing putts and winning holes showed just how caught up in the atmosphere they were. I thought the eighth hole of the Rory vs Reed match was one of the best things I have ever seen on a golf course. In regular events, we pros are trying to stay level headed and patient. We try to ‘stick to the process’, but let’s be honest, it can get a little dull! Why not have players fist pumping like maniacs? It’s not stuff we need to see every week, but every now and then it is good for the game. I hope the Americans enjoy the trophy for these next two years. I’m confident we’ll win it back in Paris, and I’ll be doing all I can to be part of the team that does it!

Bellissimo Paisley secures card with third place at the Italian Open

E

uropean Tour player and Northern Golfer columnist Chris Paisley has secured his tour card for next season following a third place finish in the Italian Open – where home favourite Francesco Molinari collected the victory. Paisley, who picked up €168,900 for his tie for third place alongside Spain’s Nacho Elvira, jumped from outside the top 110 – the mark to secure a card – into the top 75 on the Race to Dubai and has set his sights on climbing higher in the rankings. “To know my card is secure for next season is a fantastic feeling. It’s the first goal I set at the start of the season and I expected to do it comfortably at the start of the year. “I struggled a bit in the middle of the season and have had to work hard

Chris Paisley in action at the Italian Open (© Getty Images) to improve, and get the decent results in. Despite my position in the Race to Dubai, I knew I had a good result in me. For that to come in a big money event is amazing - it has completely changed my year. “I’ve had a few different seasons on the European Tour – from carrying my year on one big result to slowly accumulating enough money to get in. “The first option is definitely more stressful. I’ve missed a lot of cuts this

season, but knowing how top-heavy the purses are, I knew one result would be huge.” Following weather delays, Paisley sat at the top of the leaderboard on 10 under-par during the second round, ahead of Masters champion Danny Willett, a position he enjoyed, and one which led to many supportive messages from across the North East. “Sitting at the top of a strong leaderboard was a great feeling. I had

the perfect place in the draw and got so many messages of support. It’s brilliant to see how many people are routing for me. “In golf, there is always something more to achieve. Now I have my card, I’d like to make it into the first event of the Final Series and build on that and get through to the World Tour Championship at the end of the year.” Follow Chris’ Tour Life in his regular Northern Golfer column.

nglish Amateur Champion Dan Brown was in sparkling form to add the Northern title to his national crown. The Masham golfer cruised to a nine-shot victory in the North of England Open Amateur championship at Alwoodley, with Cavendish’s George Bloor - the man he beat by two holes in the English final at Ganton - a distant second. Brown led by two at the halfway stage following a pair of one underpar 70s and added consecutive 71s in difficult conditions as Bloor shot a closing 77 for the runners-up spot. Middleton Hall’s Jack Yule was third after his second round 66 - the best of the tournament - pushed him into contention. But he would also only manage a 74 in the final round. Carus Green’s Adam Chapman, looking for a third consecutive victory, had to settle for 293 and a share of fourth place with Malton and Norton’s David Hague (74-71-73-75) and Wath’s

Nick Poppleton (70-75-72-76). Almost 160 players submitted entries for one of the Northern Counties flagship events and more than half of the field were plus-two or better, with 20 of the top 30 players on England Golf ’s Order of Merit taking part.

I’m settled here now in my third season, and it’s an exciting time to be part of the club as we develop the course – I can’t wait to see the finished product. I’ve also just got back out onto the course following a shoulder injury, so I’m looking forward to getting back into playing too.” HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE GAME? “I started playing aged 13 with one of my neighbours at Mount Oswald. I played there for a year and moved to Durham City, where I played until moving to Yorkshire to turn pro. Those four years were great; I played so much golf and improved really quickly. I then headed off to Otley Golf Club to train then to Ilkley before heading further afield.” WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD? “I’m really looking forward to being part of the changes at Chester-le-Street, which are exciting for the whole club as we develop the course. I’m also excited to grow the coaching here, with juniors and beginners as well as club members, and helping them improve their golf. Lastly, I can’t wait to get back into the swing of tournament golf and get out onto the PGA circuit.” INTERESTING FACT? “When teaching a couple of beginners, they both recorded holes-in-one on their first visit to a par-three course – consecutively at the first and second holes.”

Rockliffe Hall Most major autumn renovations on greens have either been completed or are underway, and now final preparations are being carried out to ensure the turf is strong and healthy enough to withstand the winter weather and the coming winter golf. Mowing heights are now being raised and mowing frequency will alter due to the turf’s growth slowing down with the temperature change. With the weather in a changeable state and ground conditions starting to soften, it presents an opportunity to aerate worn and compacted areas by either deep verti-draining or hollow coring. It is these types of operations and working practices, along with other smaller practices such as

applying fertiliser and chemicals or top dressing, that both visiting golfers and members should be made aware of, especially when the work carried out is major renovation works. Although some of these procedures cause little to no disruption to playability, it is important that golfers are informed of the on-going maintenance on the course, as it may affect the players’ experience and expectations. It’s important to keep the golfers and club members regularly informed on what’s happening with the course, as well as the benefits and reasons as to why the operation is being carried out. This information can also highlight any risks or hazards a golfer may need to be aware of while experiencing the golf course.

Each hole sits in the natural landscape of one of the most unspoiled parts of Ireland and it’s probably to only links course where all 18 greens can be seen from the clubhouse. What can also be seen is a winding burn that twists and turns through the course and which I was able to view at very close quarters more than once.

This is real links golf. Every hole is full of undulations and swales and the magnificent panorama of Dingle Peninsula is on view with small secluded inlets, hills and mountains and the great Blasket Islands out in the wild Atlantic. If I had to pick out one hole on this 6,680-yard layout, it would be the ninth, where a good drive over the burn is needed to set up a long iron (or more) to a wicked raised green. Watch out for the par threes - the second is 227 yards, the fifth 202 yards (alongside water), the ninth is 197 yards (with out of bounds left) and only the 12th is relatively short at 161 yards. Beaufort’s parkland course is a complete contrast, nestled among 200-year-old trees, the ruins of a 15th Century castle, lakes and rolling meadows, and surrounded by the MacGillycuddy Reeks. There has been significant upgrading to Beaufort recently, including the addition of lakes, fairway bunkers, irrigation and mounds. Seven miles from Killarney, Beaufort sits at the base of Ireland’s highest mountain, Carrauntoohil, part of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and at 7,004 yards off the back, it isn’t short. The front nine holes are relatively secluded and amble between mature trees and gorse on

GOLFERTRAVEL

FACT FILE Alan Hedley travelled to Ireland with Irish Ferries, who offer up to eight departures a day from the UK to Ireland, with a fleet of four superb ships including the only genuine fastcraft on the Irish Sea - the twinhulled catamaran Dublin Swift. Alan sailed on Irish Ferries flagship, Ulysses which at almost 51,000 tonnes is the largest ship on the Irish Sea, and returns on the Dublin Swift Cruise. Ferry fares start at £79 each way for a car and driver, with no extra charges for carrying golf clubs or any other baggage in the boot. Additional passengers in the same car are from £30 each way. Irish Ferries Holidays can also package up stays at selected hotels, B&Bs and cottages to create great value self-drive golf holidays.

Killorglin Golf Club generous undulating fairways with the pick of them the 187 yard par three eighth, where the tee shot is played from a small copse to a wellprotected green. The back nine is good for scoring if you avoid the big bunkers and judge the pace on the multi-tiered greens, with the par five 12th an excellent hole wending its way along a shaded valley, while a real feature is the ruins of Castle Core. Another feature is the excellent, welcoming clubhouse, restaurant and golf shop managed by Helen Clifford. Killarney captures everything you would want from your golf club - wonderful lake and mountain views make for a spectacular backdrop to one of the world’s most renowned golf courses. The lake views on the first four holes of the Killeen course will almost make you forget how dangerous they are, and there is the spectacular par three 10th virtually playing on to the lake. It is long at 7,000 yards but there are three tees on each hole so it is eminently playable, as is the second course, Mahony’s Point, which has a truly spectacular finishing hole that more than matches the closing stretch and the 18th on the Killeen. There is also a third course, Lackabane, which hosted the Irish Ladies Open Championship in 2002, and which is undergoing redevelopment. There was just time on the way back to Dublin to take in nine holes at Killorglin - an 18 hole parkland course of just under 6,500 yards and what a welcome we were given. The course is in the shadow of the majestic Macgillicuddy Reeks and on the other side it enjoys magnificent panoramic views of Dingle Bay and the Slieve Mish Range beyond. This is a great driving course with excellent greens and an excellent deal on green fees well worth a visit.

GOLFERTIPS

COMPRESS YOUR IRON SHOTS The key to hitting consistent iron shots is compressing the golf ball, hitting down and through the ball with a slight shaft lean – rather than trying to lift the ball into the air with a scooping motion, which creates the positions to hit it fat and thin. A great drill for achieving this feeling is to hold an alignment stick against the shaft of the club with it extending past the grip and up against your left side. As you rotate away from the golf ball, the alignment stick will show the way in which the club travels. As you return back to the ball, the stick should lead, with the head of the club following slightly behind, producing a little shaft lean and a crisp striking position. Take a few practice swings with this at a slow speed then remove the stick and watch your ball striking improve.

from the

bunker Billy Scott

Following our report on the success of 85-year-old Jim Blakey, who won a club competition at South Moor Golf Club this summer, Bedlingtonshire Golf Club member Mick Brown wrote to tell us: On September 19, 83-year-old Billy Scott won a mixed competition. The following day, during a seniors’ match at Newcastle United GC, he had his first ever hole-in-one. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. Billy, from New Hartley, still plays off a handicap of 12 and competes in weekend comps off the white tees. He is also a regular senior team member, and the team were runners-up in the Northumberland Seniors’ League. Thanks for the news Mick, and congratulations Billy - may your success continue next season

Welcome to your reader feedback page. We want to hear your likes, dislikes and funny golfing stories, and if you’d like to make suggestions about Northern Golfer, let us know. We want to hear from you!

The man who founded the Northumberland Junior Golf Association in 1964, Chris Robinson, has written us a great letter following the success of one of its graduates. He wrote: I was delighted that one of NJGA’s best ever graduates, Chris Paisley should so spectacularly come of age on the Chris Paisley Kenneth Ferrie European Tour with third place in the Italian Open to retain his European Card. I’ve followed his career since Chris was a 16-year-old junior. As an amateur he played for the junior and senior county teams, England, the Walker Cup team, Tennessee University and now as a European Tour professional. With the juniors, on more than one occasion, Chris won the 18-hole Junior Strokeplay Championship for a trophy I had previously donated. When his name was again to be engraved upon the plinth it was full, so I had to provide another trophy. The performance of Chris in Italy is only bettered by Matfen Hall’s Kenneth Ferrie, who was also a first-class county player and had an illustrious professional career winning three tournaments on the European Tour. The original ambition of the NJGA was to produce a senior county player and now the Northumberland team is full of juniors. Finally a word of praise for Andy - Chris’s elder brother who is a top coach and popular professional at Hexham. Best of luck to all those who aspire to emulate Chris and Kenneth as top European professionals. Thanks for the letter Chris and for your very kind words about Northern Golfer being a “superb magazine”. We are blushing here but delighted you enjoy it

Popular Northumberland golf resort Slaley Hall is facing a takeover but it isn’t changing hands It is at the centre of a three-year national partnership with the NSPCC through its parent body QHotels which is inviting children to “take over” at its golf resorts as the group looks to raise £300,000 for the charity. As part of the agreement with the NSPCC, youngsters are being offered the chance to help run QHotels resorts and golf courses for the day, including greeting guests on reception and in the pro shop, making beds and stirring up a storm in the kitchen. Over the next three years, the group’s 10 golf resorts will host a number of fun and creative fundraising events, offering different ways to get involved from family activities to sporting challenges. Judging by the picture, the kids are having fun
