EDITOR’S NOTE AND CONTENTS Welcome to the latest edition of Northern Golfer on the eve of what promises to be another season of golfing ups and downs. We have had a bit of a refresh with new features, more stories and bigger platforms to shout loud and proud about everything that is good in the sport in our region. One story which has had the world of golf talking, and not just Northern Golfers, is the remarkable one of Graeme Storm - so we make no apology for featuring him as our cover star. His emotional 84-day rollercoaster of losing his card, regaining it, then winning the South African Open to secure his European Tour playing rights until the end of 2018 is almost unbelievable. Graeme has been a great ambassador for the region and so it was with some pride we watched him lift the trophy having defeated Rory McIlroy in a playoff and, once he had come back to earth, he told us exactly what the last few weeks have been like. Away from the pro scene, we have introduced a new feature, A Round With... where well-known names, but not necessarily well-known golfers, talk us through their love of golf. The first person to take to the fairways is Paul Blake, owner and managing director of the incredibly successful Newcastle Eagles basketball team. You’ll find him on page 40. This issue also includes an expanded Gear section to help you prepare for the months ahead with the latest equipment on the market, we also check out courses in North Berwick and visit Bedlingtonshire to review one of the region’s finest parkland courses. Entries are now open for our popular Matchplay Pairs competition (see page 54) and we have a number of new events planned over the coming year. Look out for details in forthcoming issues. Plus there is a new column from Dean Bailey, Chris Paisley’s Tour Life featuring a hole-in-one as part of an encouraging start to his season, and all the news from clubs, pros and amateurs from the area. From the Bunker sees Marcus Armitage autograph hunting with a difference and a surprise caddy for the British Masters at Close House after a Twitter campaign featuring a postman and Sergio Garcia. So there is plenty for you to enjoy as you relax before or after your final few weeks of winter golf. See you in April. Paul Robertson, editor editor@northerngolfer.co.uk

Express delivery Local clubs are getting behind a new campaign aimed at promoting a shorter version of the sport. Golf Express, which showcases nine-hole golf to inspire busy people to play more often, has been rolled out by England Golf following a successful eight-month trial in Staffordshire - where more than 4,600 ninehole rounds were played during the trial. Now clubs across the North East are backing Golf Express. For example, Prudhoe Golf Club is offering nine holes of golf Monday-Friday for just £7.49 (tee time must be pre-booked), while the same option is available after 2.30pm at the weekend. Golf Express at Allendale costs just £8 and again must be pre-booked, but is available MondaySaturday while Rothbury has a £10 offer for nine holes throughout the week if pre-booked, while the same price applies at Seahouses after 1.30pm Monday-Saturday. At Ravensworth in Gateshead – which boasts spectacular views of the Angel of the North - Golf Express is being teed up for just £7 each weekday, with selected weekend slots also available. Olympic golfer Justin Rose, an England Golf ambassador, often plays nine holes in practice and describes Golf Express as: “A great way to play all the game in half the time.” Golf Express offers places to play across the country through its online directory at www.golfexpress9.org

Third time lucky for Wrigley

A

lex Wrigley produced a dominant display over the final two days to win the Mercedes-Benz International Pro-Am at Al Ain Golf Club in the UAE. The Great Britain and Ireland PGA Cup player from Hartlepool took the title for the first time having finished as runner-up in 2015 and 2016. Wrigley posted a course record 63 in the third round before closing

with a three under-par 67 to win the tournament in style on 14 under-par (266). Wrigley held off another PGA Cup player, Chris Gane, who finished second - four shots behind with Westerhope’s Michael Nesbit third. Wrigley’s team also took second place in the team event. “It was a totally different final day to what we’ve been used to out here with no sun,” said Wrigley. “I love this place, I can read the greens really

well and the holes just seem to suit me - even the new nine hole. “The win fills me with confidence for the rest of the year. I’m also really happy for my team too, to finish second is fantastic and I’m really pleased for them.” Wrigley’s team was Jonathan Wrigley, Neil Ashby and John Fawcett. His course record 63 saw him overtake overnight leader, South Moor’s Mark Ridley, who finished seventh.

Northumberland’s Jake Storey (pictured, left) lifted his first collegiate title on his return to Georgia Southern University following the Christmas break. A past winner of the Northumberland County Championship and a member of Alnmouth Golf Club, Storey returned an eight under-par total for his three rounds in the Georgia Southern Individual Collegiate event to lead the field. He was joined in the top five by teammates Brett Barron and Cody O’Toole.

he best young professionals from the North East and Yorkshire will be vying to earn their playing rights on the HotelPlanner. com PGA EuroPro Tour when the satellite tour’s Qualifying School takes place March-April. The tour is the UK and Ireland’s official satellite of the European Tour and is set to return to the North East this summer, with Close House hosting the season opener at the

end of April and Longhirst Hall in Morpeth and Moor Allerton Golf Club in Leeds also welcoming the country’s best young players. All professionals, as well as amateurs with an official handicap of two or less are able to compete at the tour’s Qualifying School, which is contested over two stages. Those successful will earn a full card on the 2017 EuroPro Tour. Some of the North East’s best pros already have full playing rights -

Rockliffe Hall’s James Maw narrowly missed out on promotion last year after collecting his maiden EuroPro title with victory at Hawkstone Park in Shropshire, while Yorkshire’s former English Amateur Champion Joe Dean finished 10th on the EuroPro rankings in 2016, his rookie year as a pro. They, along with James Wilkinson (Penrith) and Alex Wrigley (Hartlepool), hold full playing rights after a top 20 finish last season.

Masters chance for juniors

A

s the build up begins to the British Masters at Close House later this year, the Northumberland resort has announced it will host the first Junior Masters across the North this spring and summer. Taking place at seven venues between April-August, two boys and one girl will progress from each of the three age categories at the qualifying venues, meaning 70 youngsters will get the chance to play the final over the Lee Westwood Filly Course at Close House on the Tuesday of British Masters week. The winner, who will receive the Junior Masters trophy from former world number one Lee Westwood and prizes from event sponsor Ping, will join all the competitors to watch the world’s best players take on the par three Hero Challenge on the Lee Westwood Colt Course on Tuesday evening. The winner will also tee it up the following morning in the Pro Am alongside some of sport, television and film’s biggest names and European Tour stars. The seven qualifying events will be part of: The Northumberland

County Meeting at Seahouses (April 6), a Close House Filly junior open (May 30), The Colin Scott Junior Open at Middlesbrough GC (July 28), the Lee Westwood Junior Open at Worksop GC (July 31), the Carlisle GC Junior Open (July 31), the Durham City Junior Open (August 21) and an event at Seaton Carew (TBC). Making the announcement, attached tour professional Lee Westwood said: “The Junior Masters is a great way to involve youngsters in the tournament and promote golf in the North of England. “We want to see kids getting excited about the game, and what better way to do this than offer them a chance to be a part of the tournament and play with some of the best golfers in the world. “This is a huge opportunity to have a positive impact on junior golf within the region for years to come,” added Graham Wylie, owner of Close House. “We want to establish the Junior Masters as an annual event going forward and continue working to promote the game across the North long after the British Masters has moved on from Close House.”

Kiran’s fightback Kiran Matharu’s comeback took a major step forward as she marched to her maiden Sunshine Ladies Tour victory with a commanding performance in the Ladies Tshwane Open in South Africa. The Cookridge Hall golfer was in imperious form at Zwartkop Country Club - firing four birdies on the back nine to post a four under-par 67 for a winning score of 209. “This is what I’ve been working towards since the start of the Sunshine Ladies Tour and to finally lift the trophy is just a fantastic feeling,” said Matharu, who also won 400,000 Rand. The victory catapulted Matharu, 27, to the top of the Chase to the Investec Cup and marks a remarkable comeback. “I am really excited to win again,” she said. “The last couple of years have been tough. I’ve had injuries to overcome and I started showing some form last year but it’s not until

you put your hands on a trophy that you know you can win again.” Matharu turned pro as a 17-year-old in 2006 and became a poster girl for Asian sport. Unfortunately by 2012 she had lost her tour status and had a battle with the yips. She spent four hours a day for five months in her garage working on a Hank Haney technique to cure the yips and then met Northamptonshire Cricket Club’s physio Madhan Ramanathan, who recognised she was suffering from blocked hips. Matharu said: “I was struggling and it was getting worse. But Madhan realised what the problem was and it’s made a huge difference. Suddenly I could swing the club more freely.”

The 46th Walker Cup match will be played over the weekend of September 9–10 and GB&I will bid to retain the historic trophy after a record 16½-9½ victory over the US at Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2015. Craig Watson, who will captain the team for the first time, said: “We have identified a strong group of players who are all in contention for a place on the team. We will also pay close attention to the progress and form of players not included in this current squad as they also have the opportunity to play their way into contention.”

alton & Norton’s David Hague is looking to build on an incredibly successful 2016 season and breakthrough into the international ranks. The 20-year-old, plus-three handicapper won the Pannal Rose Bowl and Vardon Grip Trophy last year to finish third in Yorkshire’s Order of Merit, as well as claiming top spot in York’s Order of Merit with three wins and breaking the course record at Malton & Norton with a 63. He said: “To finish third, having

made the top 10 in the last two years in Yorkshire, last season was a fantastic achievement among so many strong players. “My goal this year is to win the Yorkshire Order of Merit and improve my results in national events to boost my world ranking and make it into the England system. “From there it’s about making it to each stepping stone and improving as I try to make it to the professional ranks like Malton’s Chris Halley and Simon Dyson have done before me.”

Carus Green Golf Club resident and European Senior Tour winner Gary Wolstenholme MBE (pictured) has secured his 2017 European Seniors Tour card following a sixth-place finish at the MCB Tour Championship at Constance Belle Mare Plage in Mauritius. Gary, who has described the 2016 season as ‘challenging’, shot a 10 under-par total with rounds of 70, 70 and 66 to secure his card through a 13th place finish in the Order of Merit. He said: “With this year’s introduction of a new system of qualification it has been a stressful season, but I am absolutely

delighted to have a guaranteed place on Tour next year. I’ve worked very hard this year and will continue to do so as it doesn’t get any easier out here!”

hickham has appointed John Paul as the club’s PGA professional to head up coaching at the new Hollinside Academy. John, 24, who trained with PGA professional David Mather and qualified in 2016, will be launching coaching programmes ahead of the new season as well as making use of the academy’s driving range, short course and GC2 simulator for tuition and custom fitting. He said: “The opportunity to come to Whickham as my first head professional job was too good to pass

up. I’ve received a warm welcome from all the members and can’t wait to get the coaching programmes and pro shop up and running ahead of start of the season. “The facilities are fantastic at the new academy and we’ll be delivering junior coaching and Get into Golf from March. “I want to build a reputation for coaching here, for established players and beginners, and become a trusted fitting centre on the back of the fantastic facilities on offer. “Its an exciting time for Whickham and I’m looking forward to being part of it.”

The iconic Leeds Cup, professional golf’s oldest trophy, returns to its spiritual home Cobble Hall after an eight-year absence this May. And that’s great news for the club that nearly went into administration in 2012. “We did a complete review of our operations and we have since increased membership by 30% and seen an 85% rise in visitors,” said secretary Paul Mawman. “It’s been a significant turnround which we could not have done without the loyal support of the members. “We’re delighted that the cup is coming home and we’ve been endorsed by the PGA.”

he William Hunt Trilby Tour will return to the North this season with Northumberland Golf Club, Carus Green and Kirbymoorside Golf Club hosting Regional Championship events in June. The national tour for amateur golfers, which is shown weekly on Sky Sports, returns for the 10th year in 2017, with its unique format remaining – in which players compete in 18-hole stableford events before the top four progress to a three-hole shootout to decide the champion. Players can qualify for the Regional Championships through qualifying opens at each club. From those events the top players will go on to compete in each Regional Championship - with the top 10 in these events making it through to the International Grand Final at Hull Golf Club on August 31. Trilby Tour director Toby Morgan said: “With the 2017 Trilby Tour

The Ingleby Barwick Golf Academy coach will be one of 22 PGA professionals selected for R&A’s Swing Zone at Royal Birkdale where members of the public can have free lessons.

Whether you join as a member, play for the day with friends or pop in for a drink and a bite to eat , you’ll be sure to receive a warm welcome.

He said: “It is a huge honour. To be one of the 22 coaches selected from the 8,000-strong PGA membership during the event is something I am incredibly proud of. “I am looking forward to promoting a sport I am so passionate about at such a fantastic event.” Jackson also runs his own golf foundation which aims to raise money to plough back into coaching.

Girl Power

Robinson honoured

Northern double will boost Girls Golf Rocks this year. Yorkshire and Cumbria have joined Durham in the recruitment campaign which got more than 600 girls playing last year. The number of counties taking part has grown from nine to 15 – all aiming to get more girls playing golf by offering coaching with PGA professionals and using young ambassadors from county squads to show how fun and sociable the game is. Also joining the programme are: Bedfordshire, Kent, Leicestershire, Staffordshire and Wiltshire. They join Buckinghamshire, Cheshire, Dorset, Durham, Essex, Gloucestershire, Norfolk and Nottinghamshire. Taster sessions will be held by PGA professionals in March and April, when ambassadors will be on hand to encourage the new girls. Everyone who takes part in a taster session will then be offered five weeks of group coaching, leading to a fun day with the ambassadors featuring multiskill challenges and the chance to play

Yorkshire’s Steve Robinson (pictured) has been named England Golf’s Coach of the Year for 2016. The Sandburn Hall pro received a standing ovation at an awards dinner at the England Golf Coaching Conference. Robinson enjoyed a spectacular 2016, inspiring the England women’s team to become European champions for the first time in 23 years. Victory was particularly sweet because his teams have been involved in bronze medal playoffs in the previous three years but had left the championships empty handed on each occasion.

on a golf course. During 2016, the nine counties involved attracted more than 600 girls to taster sessions. More than 500 went on to take coaching courses and over 230 have already taken out some type of club membership. This coincides with a growing number of clubs and counties reporting an increase in girls’ membership rates. Lauren Spray, the England Golf women and girls’ participation manager, said: “Girls Golf Rocks has been an amazing success and we’re looking forward to working with more counties and clubs.”

One you’ve got to come back for Dean Bailey returns to one of his favourite parkland courses, Bedlingtonshire in Northumberland, as Masters momentum builds

T

here’s something special about an early season visit to Bedlingtonshire Golf Club in the heart of Northumberland – a must around April when the Masters from Augusta has inspired us to seek out green fairways and tall trees punctuated by banks of pink and purple azaleas and rhododendrons. Much like Dr Alastair McKenzie’s Augusta masterpiece, the Frank Pennink-designed Bedlingtonshire is home to a fabled stretch of three challenging holes – its own Amen Corner complete with towering oak trees, demanding tee shots, card wreckers and stunning views – remarkable when you realise the golf course has only stood here since 1972. Turning into the furthest corner of the course following the tight, but short 350-yard par four 12th, the stretch begins with a daunting tee shot to a fairway protected by thick rough 16 NORTHERN GOLFER

and trees left and a huge rhododendron bush and more tall trees to the right of the fairway which will block an approach should you leak your drive right. At a little over 400 yards, your second will be trickier still with a bunker short right of the green, two more greenside traps and trees left of the green. Played into the furthest corner of the course, the par three 14th is the signature hole (see fact file). The second daunting tee shot in three holes, the 15th may be the toughest drive on what is generally a generous course. Trees loom left while more await right should you bail out to the wider line. A large green, which sits slightly below the fairway is protected by two deep bunkers and trees at the back. Though defined by this stretch, Bedlingtonshire is one of the North East’s finest parkland layouts from the first to the 18th – stretching to 6,813 yards with a par of

73 – and one where the wind can play havoc and make reaching many of the longest holes near impossible. Opening with two par fives of less than 500 yards there is a great chance to get your round off to a quick start. Two good drives should fill you with confidence and you’ll need it – the third is the first of the 400-yard-plus par fours on the course and at 460 it’s one of the toughest. Drive to the top of the hill and thread your approach to a tight green should you want to protect your fast start. A dogleg par four of 385 yards follows before the first par three – the 188-yard sixth – which can be difficult to find as the dip short of the generous green makes it look shorter than it plays. The par five seventh is another good birdie chance, as is the 352-yard eighth should you find the fairway. You may need them too as the ninth is certainly the toughest of the

opening nine. This 230-yard par three plays steeply downhill but the wind can make club selection range from mid-iron to a driver and a pitch shot. The par four 10th and par five 11th require good driving with fairways defended by mature trees before heading toward the fabled stretch. The 16th is arguably the most difficult hole on the back nine. At 449 yards this slight dogleg left plays long with thick rough bordering the fairway and making a second shot with a long iron impossible. At the green, a cavernous front bunker catches many mishit approaches while a devilish green makes this a demanding par four. A shade under 200 yards, the 17th invariably plays with a crosswind and the breeze will swirl in the trees while the last borders the main road and OOB left – though it is in reach for many with a green complex which feeds the ball onto the putting surface outside the clubhouse windows. With its challenging conditions, high quality putting surfaces and demanding layout its no wonder Bedlingtonshire has produced professionals like Ken Ferrie and Mathew Webb, and is why it remains one of our must-visit spring venues.

With a burn running behind the green and two greenside bunkers protecting a relatively flat green, it can be challenging when the wind swirls around the trees and banks of rhododendrons

eamish Park’s annual Charity Golf Day in aid of Charlie Bear for Cancer Care is set to top £50,000 when it returns on Thursday July 6, 2017. Run by club professional Chris Cole alongside Jim Cockburn and volunteers from the club, the event was set up by Chris six years ago following his cancer treatment at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital. He said: “The event has been

incredibly successful in the last six years and I can’t thank those who take part enough. It’s always great fun, with lots going on throughout the day and the money all stays here in the North East with a great cause.” This year’s event is already set to be the biggest yet, though there are still spaces available for teams of four (£250 per team). Sweet treat Pig n Mix Sweet Company’s Stewart Bailey will host his annual charity golf day at Rockliffe Hall on Friday June 23 in aid of The Children’s Heart Unit Fund at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital. Having raised more than £250,000 in the last four years for causes including The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, CHUF, GNAA, Cash for Kids, Tiny Lives, Stroke Association, Macmillan Cancer, Heel & Toe, Percy Hedley and Grace House Children’s Hospice, Stewart has grown the golf day to 24 teams this year and will visit Rockliffe

Hall for the first time. “I support a number of charities through the business and personally and it’s fantastic to have the opportunity to raise money for CHUF again with this year’s golf day,” said Stewart. “I’ve done all sorts to raise money – including a parachute jump having never been to an airport before – and the golf day has grown year-on-year and it’s fantastic to welcome so many people back each time. I can’t say a big enough thank you to everyone who supports the event and to Rockliffe for hosting this year’s golf day.”

D

anny Finlay was installed as the new Northumberland Union of Golf Clubs president at the county’s annual meeting. The first president elected from Percy Wood Golf Club, he took office at the AGM held at The Northumberland Golf Club. A member of Gosforth before Percy Wood, he said: “It is a great honour and privilege to be have been selected to represent the county as president.” “I shall be visiting many of our golf clubs during the year and trust they will assist me by supporting the clubs hosting our county competitions, both as players and supporters.” Northumberland will continue with the USGA rating programme with 10 clubs selected for re-rating this year. In the last two years, 18 clubs have gone through the process and all 42 will have been re-rated by 2018/19, in time for the move to the worldwide handicapping scheme planned for 2020. County secretary Ian Harrison reported Northumberland now has

an online entry and payment facility for county competitions via the NUGC website. David Gilroy continues as county captain, and with the NUGC and Northumberland Junior Golf Association forming closer ties this year plus launching a mentoring scheme, he hopes to see the benefits feeding through into the county squad. The NJGA will still run their competitions and patrons days but have put together an elite squad who join the county training programme under Andy Paisley and John Harrison.

Danny Finlay

Billingham’s John Kirk has been elected president of the Durham County Golf Union. The appointment came as the county AGM reported a small downturn in membership numbers after last year’s increase Jonathan Ward, county secretary, said: “A reduction of 139 - less than three per club - may be a little disappointing compared to the increase of 600 in 2015, but we feel that the downward trend of the previous 10 years has bottomed out.” Bucking the trend was Wynyard - who reported the biggest increase in numbers with an extra 90 joining in 2016 while Rockliffe Hall saw numbers climb by 82. Boldon and Hobson saw the next two highest increases with 31 new members each.

Whiteoak stars for England

Shipley’s Will Whiteoak (pictured, right) was man of the match winning all six of his games - as England fell a half point short of successfully defending their title at the Costa Ballena Quadrangular tournament in Spain. England halved the final day’s match with hosts Spain after an extremely close singles session in which, agonisingly, three of the individual games were halved. Had they managed to squeeze out the extra half point needed to beat Spain they would have tied with Italy and Germany – and retained the trophy by virtue of winning the most game points. The honours went to Italy.

Merit marks for Thompson

R

hys Thompson is the toast of Slaley Hall after winning the Durham County Order of Merit - and he is just one of several success stories at the club’s QGolf Academy. The man behind the academy, Steven Fawcitt, has worked at Slaley Hall for three years and was credited as part of Thompson’s success having worked with him on his short game. Fawcitt explained: “Rhys had been struggling with his short game a little so we’ve been concentrating on that. As results indicate, he’s really turned a corner now. “He won the Big Six individual title at Delamere Golf Club in August, then went on to extend his lead in the Order of Merit by winning the Ravensworth Bowl.” Despite the 21-year-old Thompson - who works in the membership department at Slaley - being unable

to compete in the final event, he managed to win the title by 10 points to add to his 2015 County Matchplay Championship victory. It secured him a place in this year’s English Amateur Championship and, once he has completed that tournament, he plans to turn professional. While Thompson’s success is the headline act of 2016, Fawcitt and the QGolf Academy team also take great satisfaction from the more prosaic achievements of their other pupils. Sara Mather won seven of the 20 club tournaments she played in, while 17-year-old Xan Milligan reduced his handicap from 10 to five on the way to winning his junior club championship. Meanwhile, Slaley Hall has cemented its place as one of the UK’s premier golf resorts after being voted Best Golf Hotel/Resort in the North of England for the third successive year by Today’s Golfer magazine.

Huddersfield-based European Tour star Chris Hanson, coached at Oulton Hall in Leeds by QHotels group academy director Pearson, retained his card for 2017 and is going well this year with four top 25 finishes already. Away from the European Tour, the Leeds Academy success continued with another Pearson prodigy, Sam Connor, recording three victories on the 1836 Tour as well as competing on the EuroPro Tour, while Ed Battye secured the Yorkshire Order of Merit title.

onathan Paine says he has embraced every job since arriving at the PGA North Region headquarters in 2009. So far that has included van driver, and office and tournament administrator, and has led to him being named PGA North regional secretary. “This is the role I’ve always wanted,” said Paine. “I have got the drive to succeed and I believe we could become

the strongest region as we have a big membership and a fantastic mix of courses.” Paine, and long-serving tournament director Andrew Chadwick, have already discussed a number of initiatives including making members more aware of what’s on offer from the association. “We are determined to build up the region to the level it used to be with a full order of merit series,” Paine added.

This 6289 yard James Braid course is both picturesque and demanding due to the nature of the rolling terrain and sloping greens which provides a challenge for both novice and experienced golfers alike. Tributes to John Jacobs

G

olfing legend John Jacobs, often described as the father of modern day golf, has died at the age of 91. Jacobs was well known in the North East from the time he launched the John Jacobs Golf Centre - now Parklands - in Gosforth Park in 1967. He successfully taught many golfers of all levels including Newcastle’s Jenny Lee Smith - now Jenny Lucas - who became an England international, the North East’s first woman professional and the first winner of the Ladies British Open. Jenny, who now lives in Kent, worked at the Golf Centre early in her career, and she said: “It’s such very sad news. This great man took me under his wing at 16 when I worked with him in Newcastle. “When I first began working there I was off a 28 handicap. He watched me hit some balls on the range and

said to me ‘Young lady one day you will play for England.’ Well, five years later I did play for England. Three years after that I won the First Ladies British Open. He wrote to me after my win at Fulford and said ‘Remember when I told you all those years ago you would play for England, well you have done much better than that with this fantastic win.’ “I shall be for ever grateful to him for his help, support and the fact he was always there to give help when I needed him most. He coached me throughout my golf career, even giving me transatlantic golf lessons on the phone. Having lost my dad at 12, John was like a fantastic father figure to me and I shall be ever thankful for that.” Alan Hedley had the pleasure of interviewing John more than once and he was a true gentleman, as Chris Robinson, who was general manager of the golf centre from 1967 to 1970,

John Jacobs (©The PGA). Inset: Jacobs with Jenny Lucas can attest. “John was a true all rounder and the world of golf will be greatly saddened by his passing,” said Chris. “During John’s tenure the Golf Centre proved particularly popular for target golf competitions and in 1969 staged the country’s first televised tournament. “As a player, he was no mean performer and in 1957 won the Dutch Open and the South African matchplay championship beating Gary Player 2&1 in the final.”

Jacobs played in the 1955 Ryder Cup and was the obvious choice as captain of the first European teams in 1979 and 1981. From 1971-1975 he was director general of the European Tour - laying the foundations for the success it is today. All of which is a long way from his early years at Lindrick Golf Club in Yorkshire where his father was the professional and understanding the swing was simply to “stop myself hooking into the gorse on the left.”

urham County Golf Union’s annual meeting was overshadowed by the passing of two members of the county’s executive - vice-president Derek Olley and treasurer John Bosanko. A minutes silence took place at the start of the meeting in the Ramside Hall Hotel to pay respect for both men - who did much for the game of golf, particularly in Co Durham. Derek, who passed away at the age of 78, had been unwell but his death was, nevertheless, a shock as was that of 68-year-old John. Derek, chairman of the Durham County Coaching programme and County junior liaison officer in the early 2000s, was wellknown and a keen sportsman having played cricket for Marske, Cargo Fleet, Blackhall and

Middlesbrough, football for Marske United and rugby for Acklam and Middlesbrough. In 1972 he joined Billingham Golf Club and held a single figure handicap for 25 years. He served as the club’s president for 30 years from 1985 and was a member of the Durham executive committee from 2006. He was also a former head of serious crime at Cleveland Police, and one-time deputy head of Scotland Yard’s national drugs squad. He returned to Teesside, becoming commander of Hartlepool Division, where he served until his retirement in 1986. After his retirement from the police force he worked for a further 10 years with the Ministry of Defence in national security. County treasurer John’s death on

Derek Olley the eve of the AGM was both sudden and unexpected. After serving on the county executive for three years since 2013, he became treasurer last year when Les Inskip retired, but many will have known him in his other role as honorary secretary of Beamish Park Golf Club.

The merger of the LGU and The R&A has been finalised. The agreement sees the LGU’s business operations and its members of staff move into The R&A group of companies. An new governance structure will give LGU Board members representation on R&A committees. The R&A will assume responsibility for staging the LGU’s championships and international matches this year, offering leading female professional and elite amateur golfers opportunities to play in a world-class series of events. The Ricoh Women’s British Open will continue to be managed by IMG. Trish Wilson, chair of the LGU, said: “The completion of the merger is a progressive and important step for the development of women’s golf. Bringing the two organisations together creates a platform that will allow us to develop our aspirations for women’s golf on a global stage.”

Winter rules!

Winter golf isn’t just about jumpers, jackets, woolly hats and those long irons which you can still feel in your fingers two holes later – there are little rays of sunshine in there too

I

’ve always thought about packing up the clubs after the final competition of the season, waiting out the long dark winter nights and frozen winter greens in favour of warmth...and the certain happiness of the grass being greener on the other side. However, since the days of getting off the school bus outside the golf clubs gates, I haven’t managed a fortnight without playing…to the point of standing on the driving range hitting balls into 2ft of snow in January before piling my car into a fence on the way out. Expensive mistakes aside, there is something special about winter golf. When you’ve battled through hail, wind, rain and freezing temperatures for weeks there are few truer feelings of accomplishment than standing on the first tee in the final of the winter league doubles…in some circles anyway! For the die hard players, those who’ll text you three times a week with things like ‘there is always someone out there getting better

30 NORTHERN GOLFER

than you by training harder than you’ it’s the time to gain an advantage on the field come April – often with fantastic results. For me, having tried all that, it’s now more about keeping the swing ticking over and having a rough idea of which end to hold come those frantic few evenings before the first competition of the season. Then there are the mornings like my last winter league outing – those perfect storm days where you never want to play this silly, soul-eating game again…or something to that effect. You know the one – you’ve slept in, slipped in the car park rushing to get your bag out, run to the furthest point on the course for the shotgun start to see your playing partners are already halfway up the fairway while you’re deciding whether it’s worth taking off one of your four layers or to put up with it until you cool down. You know, those days where golf feels like the last place you want to be. Watching as your opening approach bounces as if it’s trying to touch down on the runway at Newcastle Airport only increases

the volume of the little voice in the back of your head pointing out how silly this all is. But, as the golfing gods often do, you get that little ray of hope. In my case, at the last where, having hit two of the worst shots of what was already a bad day, hope in the form of a full lob wedge over trees to 8ft and a putt which found the middle of the hole to close with a par. Not one for the highlight reel – but a reminder of what winter golf is all about. None of us drag ourselves from the warmth of bed to emulate Rory or Dustin blazing it round pristine courses. Nor do we expect to break records wearing a wardrobe’s worth of gear. We do it for those moments, for the best half hour of clubhouse banter you’ll find afterwards with tales of 20+ handicappers having the round of their life on frozen fairways or low handicappers sharing horror stories. Winter golf isn’t about the quality of the shots you play – it’s about getting out there, staying warm, and remembering you could be dragging yourself round a supermarket or watching Sunday morning TV.

What a difference a year can make! This time last year I had just missed my fourth consecutive cut of the season and I was 0/6 in the Desert Swing. This year I made all three cuts finishing 29th, 13th, and 15th. It has been my best start to a season in a long time and to say it’s been eventful might be an understatement. My most remarkable result was making the cut in Qatar. After 27 holes I had not had a birdie. I was sitting five shots outside of the cut mark and was thinking about the possibility of catching an earlier flight to Dubai. Things started looking up when I birdied the 10th and 11th, and all of a sudden I could smell a chance. With three holes to go I was still three outside of the mark. I birdied 16 to keep my hopes alive. What happened next was the most valuable shot of my life! A hole-in-one with a nine iron from 136 yards, which meant I was now inside the cut…and received a voucher for $150,000 to spend in Qatar Duty Free (which I didn’t find out until after I signed my card). After a birdie on the last I made the cut with a shot to spare! It is by far the most remarkable ‘comeback’ I have ever achieved and shows you should never, ever, give up! The second moment I have to pick out was the Saturday of Dubai where I got to play with Henrik Stenson. It really felt like David and Goliath (and this time Goliath won), but it was a great experience. Not only is he an exceptional player, he is also a very funny and genuine guy. We shared a few laughs about him outdriving me with his three wood on every hole! It was also another great learning experience and one common denominator I have noticed with top players like Stenson, Willett and Schwartzel is their focus. They never hit a shot until they are ready, and they never give less than 100% on every shot; they treat every putt as if it was to win the tournament no matter what position they are in. It sounds easy, but not that many guys actually do it and that is something I will continue to work on. It has been a very encouraging start to the season - lets keep it rolling!

STEVE HARRISON AGE: 60 TURNED PRO: 19 HOME CLUB: EDEN GOLF CLUB HOW DID LAST SEASON GO? “I’m still playing a little bit on the senior circuit and in the odd pro am, though I have cut it back a little bit in the last year or so. Coaching is the core of what I do, working with elite players through to professionals and delivering beginner lessons here at Eden. At the top end, I’ve built some great working relationships with players and there are some very good young players here showing some promise. I add a bit of strength and conditioning coaching in there too so it all keeps the diary pretty busy.” HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE GAME? “I played football growing up in Manchester and wanted to be a professional footballer so didn’t start playing golf seriously until I was a bit older. We moved up to Cumbria and I started playing at Brampton Golf Club, which was about a mile from where we lived. I caddied for my dad, gave it a go, and played a bit in the summer while still playing football. At about 17 something clicked and I fell in love with golf. Phil and John [Steve’s younger brothers and both PGA professionals] got more and more into it and we all improved trying to get ahead of one another.” WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD? “I’ve been at Eden 21 years now and we’ve got a great track record of producing really good players so I want to continue with that. I’d like to see the elite players I work with succeed, and I’d like to play a little bit more in the next couple of years too, before I get too old. I’m certainly still fit enough to get out there and I know I can compete if I put the practice in.” INTERESTING FACT? Steve joined brothers John and Phil as the only trio of siblings to compete in a European Tour event, at Slaley Hall. The Ballesteros brothers hold the record with four brothers competing together.

GRAEMESTORM

Storm’s resurrection Alan Hedley catches up with Graeme Storm who delighted his fans and the world of golf with a fairytale comeback

I

t is surely one of the greatest comeback stories in golf – a remarkable turnaround from despair to elation. The incredible turn of events is the stuff of comic book pages but Graeme Storm’s last three months are fact not fiction. A stunning playoff victory over Rory McIlroy in the BMW South African Open resurrected Storm’s European Tour career and completed a journey he admits took him “to hell and back.” It was a journey that lasted 84 days and saw the 38-year-old from Hartlepool plumb the depths of despair after losing his job then climb to the pinnacle of beating the player he rates as the best in the world. When Storm bogeyed his final hole at the Portugal Masters last October, he knew he’d lost his European Tour card - by just €100 as it turned out. It was a heartbreaking moment for the Rockliffe touring pro who has had more than his fair share of knocks and now faced a return to the tour’s qualifying school to rescue his career. But then came an unexpected reprieve with American Patrick Reed opting not to play the required number of events needed to retain his membership of the European Tour, meaning Storm moved back in. “When I bogeyed that final hole in Portugal I thought it was all over so I have to thank Patrick Reed for me being reinstated and getting my card back. I embraced the second chance with both hands,” said Storm. “I had actually entered the tour school as a precaution but didn’t really want to go back there. It’s so difficult and there are so many good players trying to get on tour. It was a massive

relief for me and my family to not have to do that. I thought I had lost my card and all of the privileges that come from playing on the European Tour - when that happens you realise that you can’t afford to lose it. It’s my livelihood and I have a young family to support so I can’t afford to lose my job. “But with all that I am also trying to enjoy it a bit more as I am someone who gets down on themselves a little bit too much and puts pressure on myself.” Just 84 days after he stood with his head in his hands on the 18th green in Portugal, a renewed Storm was beating McIlroy with three rock-solid pars in the playoff for the South African Open. Victory ended a near 10-year wait for his second European Tour title, banking a healthy €165,000 cheque and guaranteeing his playing privileges until the end of 2018. The change in Storm’s demeanour was obvious to anyone who knows him. With a renewed determination, and swinging it better than he has done in recent years, he got off to a flyer in 2017. He finished fourth at Leopard Creek, winning €40,000, and really hit the straps at Glendower with a relaxed and assured performance. Storm had to hold his nerve and par the 18th three times in a row to beat McIlroy, the clear favourite, in front of a gallery of thousands. It was noticeable Storm never deviated from his game plan of leaving the driver in the bag at 18, avoiding trouble and concentrating on finding the middle of the green...and it worked when McIlroy missed his par putt at the third time of asking.

NORTHERN GOLFER 35

GRAEMESTORM So what’s changed for Storm? Working with top coach Pete Cowan in Sheffield before he went to South Africa obviously helped as his swing was in great shape all week and there’s no doubt the sessions on the mental side of the game with Winning Mind’s Lee Cromble Holme played a part. But it’s credit to Storm himself as he has done much to turn things around. “Winning in South Africa was a dream come true, especially after what happened to me last year with my card,” he said. “I really took a lot from that experience and told myself to try and grasp the opportunity of getting my livelihood back with both hands and I have done that. It really meant everything to me to be back in the winner’s circle again. “I have been to hell and back to be honest with you. It’s been an absolute rollercoaster over the last year and a half – especially the end of last year. “Obviously, there was pressure when I was facing Rory but not the same pressure as trying to keep your European Tour card. That’s real pressure and something I don’t want to feel again for a long time. That said, it was probably the pressure of trying to keep my card that helped me get through the playoff and made it a little bit easier, but the nerves were still jangling. “I managed to control them and made some clutch putts toward the end of the round which were massive. “It was an unbelievable feeling. I hung in there and while I didn’t play my best stuff I knew if I could hang in there that I might get my chance thankfully it came. “It took some time to sink in, it was a bit surreal afterwards and I was in a bit of a daze. I was a bit speechless. It seemed incredible and I couldn’t quite believe it and before I knew it I was on the flight to Abu Dhabi so there was no real celebration although I did have a couple of glasses of champagne on the flight. “It helped I was playing with Rory. I said to him in the walk up the fairway in the last playoff hole that it was actually the first time we had played together. To play 21 holes with him was just incredible. What a superb guy he is. An absolute gentleman.” There’s never been any question mark over Storm’s ability for a game he started playing at 11, but 36 NORTHERN GOLFER

JUNIOR OPEN RETURNS

he’s often been far too hard on himself. “I’ve not set any goals or targets. I’ve just decided to try and enjoy each tournament. I’ve taken a lot from what I did and it’s an old cliché but I’m determined to take each week as it comes.” Storm admits he did think about walking away from the game at one time. He lost his card in 2001, but won it back and he worked at various jobs - including a cake factory - to make ends meet early in his career. But along with the knocks, there have been triumphs. “Winning the British Amateur to get into the Walker Cup and then holing the winning putt in the Walker Cup was a massive achievement for me as was winning the French Open over the National course, which is some track. “I’ve also had four holes-in-one - the first one in Morocco, I won a lamp, but then not so long ago I won a really nice car. “I’ve also been fortunate to play with the likes of Seve Ballesteros, Jack Nicklaus and Rory and I’d love to play with Tiger Woods.” In fact, Storm tipped McIlroy to win the tournament in South Africa despite taking a three shot lead into the final round. When McIlroy found a horrible lie in a greenside bunker on the 17th, he made a bogey and that opened the door for Storm to then go on and force the playoff with a 71 to McIlroy’s 68. McIlroy, as ever, was generous in defeat and refused to blame a back problem, later diagnosed as a stress fracture.

Young golfers from across the North are being invited to join European Tour winner Graeme Storm once again when he hosts his own tournament for a second year. After last year’s success there was little doubt the Graeme Storm Junior Open in association with Dyke House College would take place again, and it returns to Hartlepool Golf Club on Saturday April 8 - the weekend of The Masters. There is no handicap limit, the stableford format event is open to youngsters between the ages of seven and 18 and is split into categories ages 7-10, 11-14 and 15-18. The competition for seven to 10-year-olds is over nine holes and is a mixed event while there will be separate boys and girls tournaments in all the other categories. There will be prizes to be won with special prizes of entry to North of England Junior Open at South Moor in the 1114 categories as well as prizes organised by Storm. There will be a £10 entry fee which will be donated to charity partner the Finlay Cooper Fund. Entries close on March 25 and you can download the entry form by going to www.graemestorm.co.uk or www.dykehousecollege.com. Once completed please email the entry form to Sara at graemestormjunioropen@gmail. com. The £10 entry fee must be paid by March 25. It is payable via bank transfer to the following account – Sort Code 110361 Bank Account 12479461. PLEASE QUOTE YOUR CHILD’S NAME AS THE REFERENCE ON THE BANK TRANSFER.

Paul Blake

Newcastle Eagles owner Paul Blake shares his golfing memories, his love of Tour golf and his dream of playing alongside Michael Jordan

B

asketball player turned franchise owner Paul Blake has cemented his and the Newcastle Eagles’ places in the record books through unrivalled oncourt success. With 25 major trophies the Eagles are the most successful team in the history of the British game. With the BBL Cup already secured in 2017, things look set to continue under Blake and player/coach Fab Flournoy – though on-court success does have an impact on his golf game… 1 With a packed season and so much to do off-court, how often do you play? Not quite as much as I used to, or as much as I’d like to, due to work and home commitments but I’ll get out a couple of times a month in the summer. I fear I’ve become a bit of a fair weather player as I’ve aged – things get in the way of golf more easily when it’s cold. 2 You played basketball to national level at university, how did you get into golf? I lived with a couple of good golfers at university and they would play at Close House. I’d tag along, then gave it a go and got hooked from there. Living in Jesmond, we’d play at Parklands too I’ve always enjoyed playing different courses and we’d travel up into Northumberland to Longhirst or Percy Wood or out to the coast.

NEWCASTLE EAGLES’ JOURNEY TO THE TOP OF BRITISH BASKETBALL 1999 Paul Blake and Ken Nottage purchase the team for £1 from Sir John Hall’s Newcastle Sporting Club 2002 The Eagles appoint American Fabulous Flournoy as player/coach 2004-05 The team lifts its first silverware - the BBL Trophy and Play-Offs 2005-06 The Eagles win their first BBL quadruple

6 Which is your favourite golfing memory? I really enjoy playing in golf days and there have been a few: the United Carlton Back to the Future-themed day at Close House last year stands out and I’ve always enjoyed the Steve Cram Celebrity Charity Day in aid of COCO at Slaley Hall – a great event, really well run and great fun. 7 What about embarrassing moments? Too many! I’ve hit a clubhouse roof, a tractor… various static objects over the years. 8 Do you have any superstitions? Not really – some say my putting routine is a little odd but it works most of the time. 9 What are your strengths on the course? Putting. 10 And your weaknesses? Everything else. 11 Which is your favourite club in the bag? I like my mid-irons so I’d say five iron is my go-to. Longer or shorter is difficult without lots of practice.

3 Which is your favourite course in the North East? If I had to pick one I’d say Linden Hall. Playing there on a summer evening is fantastic, it’s very picturesque and I’ve enjoyed playing there a lot over the years.

Paul (right) at last year’s United Carlton golf day (©Steven Mole)

4 And further afield? I’ve played a bit in Florida where the weather is just perfect for golf, but I’d have to pick Carnoustie - it’s incredibly tough but it’s stunning.

2017 The Eagles win the BBL Cup - beating Leicester Raiders 94-82 for their 25th trophy in 13 seasons

40 40 NORTHERN NORTHERN GOLFER GOLFER

5 You reckon you’re about an 18-handicapper – but what’s your best ever score? I’ve broken 80 once, just, at Percy Wood back in the early 2000s.

12 How does your sporting background help your golf? It tends to hinder more than help. I was very analytical when I played basketball so I tend to overthink my golf too and cause myself all sorts of problems. That said, if you had two swings at every shot I’d be a very good player! 13 Who is your best golfing mate? My former teammate Steve Johnson, we get out for the odd quick game in the evenings through the summer.

14 You’re a big golf fan, who is your favourite tour player? Phil Mickelson as he’s a lefty too and plays the game in the right spirit. I like Justin Rose as well - the way he stuck with it when his form dipped as he turned pro was inspiring. I’m also a big stats guy and he’s consistently one of the top players across the board - plus his Olympic victory was fantastic! 15 Which event to you enjoy the most? I always enjoying watching the Open Championship and will hopefully be heading to Royal Birkdale with friends this summer. I love The Masters on TV and I’d love to go and sit at Amen Corner on a Sunday afternoon. 16 Which sportsperson do you admire? It has to be Michael Jordan – he is still far and away the best basketball player there has ever been. It’s rare to see someone play consistently at a level far above everyone else – Tiger did it in the early 2000s and Jordan did it throughout his career. 17 Who is in your dream fourball and the best golfer you’ve played with? Michael Jordan and Tom Brady are both legends and very good golfers so I’d team up with Seve Ballesteros and hope he could carry me through. In terms of best golfers I’ve played with, Mark James was very good – obviously. A good friend John Lee [former chief executive of Your Homes Newcastle] his sons, and his wife Karen are all very low handicappers. 18 If I could offer you another quadruple-winning year or a scratch handicap, which would you take? I’d take another quadruple. If I was playing off scratch and the team wasn’t successful I wouldn’t be able to play much golf. The other way round I get the best of both. I do love golf as it is a chance to get away from it all for a good chunk of time, spend 4-5 hours with friends in the fresh air, and just enjoy playing sport.

GREAT SCOT

The Marine Hotel is the ideal place to stay, overlooking North Berwick’s West course

Northern soul

Gary Ramsay heads north to Scotland and finds three classic courses

T

here can be few better destinations for a golf trip than the seaside town of North Berwick in East Lothian. There are more than 20 courses within a small radius of the town and they include three of the courses that regularly feature in the top 30 courses in the UK (whichever poll you choose to use), namely Muirfield, North Berwick (West) and Gullane (No.1). It really is golfing nirvana and a regular port of call for golf society trips from the North East and Yorkshire. I’ve been a regular visitor over the past 20 years or so and for our latest visit we stayed at an old favourite, the Macdonald Marine Hotel & Spa, which overlooks the aforementioned West course and has magnificent views of Bass Rock. This four-star hotel is the ideal place for a stay for a group with over 80 bedrooms and a luxurious spa with 48 NORTHERN GOLFER

swimming pool, steam room and sauna - ideal to relax in after a day on the fairways...or in the rough! It also has an award-winning restaurant with great views where you can sit and discuss the highs and lows of your day. It’s also only a short walk into the town centre. Our two-night break meant we had time for three rounds of golf and after much deliberation we decided on Longniddry, Craigielaw and the Glen (also known as North Berwick East course). LONGNIDDRY is the closest seaside course to Edinburgh and is an unusual combination of woodland and links with spectacular sea views from many holes. It’s unusual in having no par fives but eight of the par fours measure more than 400 yards, making it a tough test, particularly when the wind blows and the large greens are invariably true. We thoroughly enjoyed

Luxury stay Macdonald Marine Hotel & Spa,North Berwick There are always a good range of options available including golf packages on some of the best courses in the area. For further details go to www.macdonald hotels.co.uk.

Craigielaw, overlooking the Firth of Forth it and were made to feel most welcome in the clubhouse after our round.

CRAIGIELAW is located near Aberlady and is a fairly new course for this part of the world having opened in 2001. It is inspired by some of the great links courses with extremely challenging greens, many like upturned saucers, meaning you need to be accurate with your approach shots t as an offline approach will often mean a visit to one of the many cavernous bunkers that surround them. There are fantastic views over the Firth of Forth and in the relatively short time it has been open the course has been host to many national events including the Scottish Amateur Stroke Play Championship and a qualifier for the British Seniors Open - it’s well worth a visit.

GOLFERTRAVEL

Glen Golf Club’s 13th hole with views to Bass Rock

THE GLEN is a delightful clifftop links course and often described as a hidden gem. I must say that the first hole is one of my least favourite golf holes ever and I’ve had some horror stories in the past. It’s not long at 330 yards from the

yellow tees but has an extremely elevated green meaning you need to hit a good drive and then have confidence in your short irons to the uphill green. However, once you negotiate that wee beastie it opens up to be a really enjoyable test with

fantastic views and some extremely interesting holes along the coast. The signature hole is the 13th, a short par three at 136 yards with a blind tee shot to a green that has beach and rocks on both sides. Depending on the wind strength it can be anything from a pitching wedge to a four iron. There’s an excellent clubhouse too with great food and views to accompany your pint of Belhaven. If you’ve never visited the area

before it’s only 100 miles from Newcastle and 200 miles from Leeds and you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to golf - we are already planning our next visit. To book golf at the courses we played visit the club’s websites: Longniddry www.longniddrygolfclub.co.uk, Craigielaw www.craigielawgolfclub.com The Glen - www.glengolfclub.co.uk

JOIN THE HOLE IN ONE CLUB

BAG AN ACE AND YOU COULD BE OFF TO TPC SAWGRASS IN FLORIDA!

T

here’s nothing quite like bagging a hole in one, but beyond the bragging rights there’s never anything tangible to help you celebrate hitting the perfect shot. Until now. Five Northern Golfers are set to enjoy the trip of a lifetime to TPC Sawgrass courtesy of the Hole In One Club a unique membership scheme that rewards golfers from the UK and Ireland who score that dream ace. It is the brainchild of four golfers, one of whom recorded that dream ace only to be disappointed with how little there was out their to acknowledge the achievement. With that in mind, the group set out to reward fellow golfers with the ultimate trip to play the most iconic Par 3 in the world - the 17th Hole on the Stadium Course, TPC Sawgrass. For an annual membership fee of just £5, all members will be in with a chance of winning a seat on the plane to TPC Sawgrass for the Hole in One Club Grand Final. The only requirement? They need to hit a hole in one during the season which runs from April 1st to September 30th. Talking about the Club, Director Graeme Lisle said: “Hitting a hole in one is no mean feat, and whatever your age or ability, it can happen anytime you play. You can spend every single day of the season on the course and there’s no guarantee you’re going to bag one. When they do occur it’s something to be celebrated, and there’s no better way to celebrate than with the trip of a lifetime TPC Sawgrass.” This year, ten winners plus friends and family are winging their way to Florida, however not all of them scored a hole in one. Membership also includes the chance to win a Golden Ticket - a seat on the plane to 50 NORTHERN GOLFER

Sawgrass regardless of whether you hit an ace or not. Graeme said: “You might have a few bad days, an unlucky bounce, or maybe you just don’t have the opportunity to play as much as you want during the summer. The Golden Ticket makes sure that everyone has the chance of winning, but the easiest way to get to Florida is still to bag an ace.” For the first time in 2017, the very first hole in one of the season will go to Sawgrass regardless of how many are scored during the rest of the year, giving members even greater incentive to to get out on the golf course come April. Join today for just the price of two coffees and get ready for the beginning of the season on 1st April 2017. You can sign up hio-club.com.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Members have from April 1, 2017 to the September 30, 2017 to score that all important Hole In One. Aces will only count whilst competing in official singles or doubles club competitions (Strokeplay, Stableford or Bogey), Club Team Events, Club Open Events or PGA Pro-ams. (Hole In Ones will only be accepted if accompanied by verification from your club captain, secretary or manager). Players achieving that perfect result, simply follow the website information and register to book your place in the Grand Final at the Marriott Sawgrass. In the event of more than 12 Hole In Ones being scored and registered, competitors will compete in a national qualifier, enjoying complete hospitality at a top destination in the UK or Ireland, with at least 12 lucky members winning through to the Grand Final in Sawgrass USA in February 2018.

GOLFERTIPS

THE GATEWAY TO BETTER PUTTING Like so many players do, I found myself a fantastic putting drill last season which helped me improve my stroke and it yielded some fantastic results. However, more recently the putter has gone off the boil so I visited my friend Andy Paisley at Hexham and, using his putting studio complete with the SAM Puttlab and laser pointer, found I was aligning the putter 2-3ins right of the target. It is incredible how easy it is to abandon the fundamentals in favour of improving a more complex element of the game - particularly with the putter. Here’s a drill I have been using since then which helps set the putter correctly every time - combine it with technical drills and you’ll be holing more putts in no time.

THE DRILL You don’t need expensive equipment or even a laser pointer and a wall for this drill. Simply find a flat section of the putting green and mark a target point or choose a hole around 4-5ft away. Then, using tee pegs or two balls, create a gate 1-2ft infront of you just wider than a golf ball. Now simply practice rolling the ball through this gate - it’s incredibly simple but now a key part of my putting practice.

27 holes of championship golf winding through the beautiful Cumbrian countryside Celebrating its 25th year, Eden has matured into an extremely attractive golf course receiving great praise from visiting golfers for its immaculate condition and beautiful environment as it winds through 50 acres of woodland with fabulous wildlife and tremendous views of the Pennine and Lakeland fells. The river Eden is very much in play on several holes. The course holds several county and inter-county events each year and tends to be home to the county squad through the winter. The Hadrian Course, a new nine hole addition, offers a contrast in style to the existing 18. The course covers 100 acres which includes some tremendous specimen trees as well as steep gullies and undulations. Whether played on it’s own or as part of a 27 hole day, the 3,262 yard par 36 new course will greatly add to the appeal of a day out at Eden. The newly refurbished clubhouse

MINTO GOLF CLUB

MINTO, HAWICK, SCOTTISH BORDERS, TD9 8SA TEL: 01450 870 220 WWW.MINTOGOLF.CO.UK

A gem of a golf course set in the beautiful scenery of the Scottish Borders Minto is a gently undulating parkland course located at Denholm village, a short distance from the A68 and near to Jedburgh and Hawick. It is noted for its panoramic views South over the Teviot Valley and across to the extinct volcanic Ruberslaw hill. For several years the course has received many prestigious awards from Freedom of the Fairways and other bodies for being the most golfer friendly and popular Border Club, which explains why so many visitors return year after year. Attractive to golfers of all abilities, at 5,500 yards it provides fair challenges off the tees and on the greens. The rough is gentle should you stray off the fairways. There are four well designed par three holes carefully protected by bunkers, but there is plenty of scope for avoiding the sand. The par five tempt the Tiger golfer to cut the corner while still providing a more straightforward route for the less adventurous. Everest, the 12th, is the signature hole - it is much less steep than the name suggests. The plateau green requires a

careful approach shot. Food and drink is served in the comfortable Lounge Bar where one can relax and appreciate the stunning views. Should you wish to practice before you play, Minto has a driving range and areas where you can hone your chipping, bunker and putting skills. Groups of all sizes are welcome and the friendly staff are happy to discuss your requirements and tailor a visit to your needs. Why not visit the website for an aerial view of the course and details of Club Opens and activities.

The Northumberland Golf Club is set in the serenity of Gosforth Park only two minutes from the A1 This Colt & Braid-designed heathland course was established in 1898 to provide a challenging test of golf. Renowned for its firm, fast greens and strategic bunkering, the NGC has hosted many major championships over the years. This year, once again, it will be a venue for Regional Qualifying for the Open Championship and will also makes its debut as a Trilby Tour course.* From the simple looking but often tricky first hole the course plays both inside and outside the Newcastle Racecourse. The undulating greens combined with closely mown run off areas provide a stern test of the short game and though the course can be testing from the medal tees for even the low handicap golfer it is a pleasure to play all year round whatever your handicap.

Whether you are just finishing your round or about to go out there is always a warm welcome in the elegant clubhouse. New members and guests will find a traditional feel with a modern outlook on making guests welcome. Northumberland Golf Club is continually improving both the course and the clubhouse facilities. A new practice area was recently created where visitors can now warm up with a basket of balls. Enquiries are welcome from potential new members and visitors and the club hopes you will come and play one of the best courses in the North. *If you are not enrolled in the Trilby Tour, the Northumberland Golf Club are delighted to be hosting 3 open qualifying events in

A great deal for great golf in a great place Whickham Golf Club was founded in 1911 and moved to its present site at Hollinside Park in 1938. The present site, which was originally leased from the Earl of Strathmore, was part of the Bowes-Lyon family estate and the lodges at the club entrance marked one of the main entrances to Gibside Estate. These buildings which are used as a golf shop and workshop, are listed as buildings of special architectural and historic interest. The existing clubhouse was completed in 1980 and provides superb facilities. This excellent parkland course leaves a lasting impression on visitors; set in the beautiful Derwent Valley it has outstanding views of scenic countryside, extending to the Cheviots in the north. The acclaimed architecture of Gibside Hall and its Orangery, and the romantic ruins of Hollinside Hall serve to enhance the local landscape. Visitors will

be enthralled by the views, peace, tranquility and also the wildlife which enhance the golf course. This is a course to be enjoyed all year round. In 2016 the new Hollinside Park course layout and new Sport-England academy practice facilities opened proving to be another landmark year for Whickham Golf Club. The Club continues to flourish and reinvest substantially in the course with a redevelopment plan that has transformed the original par 68 into a challenging par 71. The project was designed by Andrew Mair & Mark James’ Golf Design & Management Company. House Manager Stephen Fawcus will ensure that your clubhouse experience is all it should be, together with the Clockburn Restaurant’s head chef Ian Michelmore.

It’s been an interesting few years since the Northern Golfer team first met Howley Hall’s Marcus Armitage in 2014. Our publisher Gary Ramsay played in the pro am with Marcus ahead of the Dawson & Sanderson Travel Classic at Longhirst – which he won – before Marcus gained back-to-back promotions through the EuroPro rankings and Challenge Tour. Now the 29-year-old is competing with – and getting snaps with – his idols on the European Tour. Speaking to the Tour at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic having met and practised alongside 14-time

major champion Tiger Woods - Marcus said: “It was pretty cool. I just went and hit some balls next to him and let him do a bit of work, and then asked him for his autograph and had a little chat. “There was no reason for me to be nervous next to Tiger – he’s just a human at the end of the day. He actually watched a few of the drives that I hit as well – I just caught him having a glance, but I was smashing it to be fair.” You can follow Marcus on Twitter @marcusarmitage1

Congratulations to Mark Johnson, who – after 206 days of tweeting – will caddy for Sergio Garcia. Having tweeted the Spaniard since last summer, the Peterborough postman was shocked to find out he will be on his bag for the Pro Am at the British Masters in September at Close House in Northumberland. Some of the highlights from Mark’s 206-day campaign: My wife said I’m a stalker I said it will be better than our wedding day it’s my dream! #Letmecaddieforyou #Day50 If you find me annoying so does my wife I’ve been married 15 years must be doing something right! #Letmecaddieforyou #Day98 My dog only responds to commands in Spanish...He is Español. #Letmecaddieforyou #Day164 Sergio was charmed: Sergio Garcia (@TheSergioGarcia): Ok @markjohno6969 I think I found the perfect day for you to get a taste of carrying my bag & make your dream come true! Are you ready? Sergio Garcia (@TheSergioGarcia): @markjohno6969 not today, don’t worry! Haha. It’s going to be the Wednesday, Pro Am day of the British Masters, ok? The moral of the story - never give up on your dreams.
