A MAGAZINE THAT CELEBRATES THE CREATIVE COLLISION OF FASHION, ART AND CULTURE.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

As we launch our Winter Issue, I reflect on how Off The Cuff came to fruition. Yes, you read that right, Off The Cuff. The premiere of this issue showcases our team’s focused vision. In the beginning, My Executive Board and I were too ambitious for our own good. So many ideas and goals flowed out of our mouths as we all schemed over the summer and starting meeting in the fall. After a few weeks we realized we needed to focus our vision and that’s exactly what we’ve done. But why change our name, you might ask? Off The Cuff has been chosen for its simplicity and edginess, representing everything this magazine embodies. We are a young organization aimed to showcase the art and culture embodied through fashion as seen through the lenses of college students walking down the Boston streets. Now as I reflect on the build up to this launch, I can only think of the hard work and dedication every single person who, both past and present, has contributed to Off The Cuff. Were it not for the time and energy put in from our writers, fashion spies, the Executive Board, etcetera, we would not be able to present the community with a spectacular issue that not only solidifies our publication, but also showcases what we stand for. I must extend a special thanks to two individuals. First, to our advisor Safoura Rafeizadah – she agreed to work with us without hesitation and has extended her hand with grace and finesse. Second, to my Vice President, Helen Peña – she has dedicated herself to this organization and has been my right hand throughout the entire process. Were it not for the countless hours this ambitious woman has spent working on every aspect of Off The Cuff, we would not be able to present this issue to you at its best. And decided unanimously by the rest of the Executive Board and myself, this issue is dedicated to the awe-inspiring Ms. Helen Peña.

With the innovative team we’ve created at Off The Cuff, our future is bright. We will continue to grow with the continued engagement of you and the Boston college community. And on that note, enjoy this issue and continue to be your fierce selves. But most importantly… Stay Stylish, VC

THIS ISSUE IS DEDICATED TO THE AWE-INSPIRING MS. HELEN PENA.

TOP 5 MUST-HAVE’S FOR STUDY ABROAD

By Rachel Nguyen

Spring semester study abroad is just around the corner. Acceptances are being sent out and students are rushing to get their cover letters written, visas approved, and internships selected. What more to add to their list of things to do other than choosing outfits? Keeping up with fashion trends is a fun addition to their list of things to do. Whether you’re going abroad to London, Madrid, Geneva, Argentina, or LA, there are five trendy must-have pieces versatile for any escapade.

LONG LIVE PUNK BY TIANNA GALLINARO

One of this year’s biggest trends in fashion is punk, but it’s far from being a new trend. Punk was originally a music movement in the late ‘70s that eventually influenced designers like Alexander McQueen and John Galliano to make some of their most iconic designs. It became a cultural movement that went against the hippie age of the 60’s and the overthe-top styles of the early 70’s. The movement was about rejecting materialism and embracing the edgy, grungy look of t-shirts, tartan, jeans, and leather.

O CREATE A PERFECT BALANCE OF EDGY PUNK AND CLASSIC PREP!

Lace always adds a vintage touch, but when paired with leather it creates an updated edgy look that reads anything but matronly.

Punk is all about the attitude. Don’t be afraid to experiment with a pair of slouchy boyfriend trousers in a dark wash—or even tartan if you’re brave! Try pairing them with a fitted oxford and a cardigan for a polished preppy twist.

25 OFF THE CUFF WINTER 2013

In punk fashion, everything is better in leather. Stay warm this winter season by wearing leather leggings, tops, or jackets. Don’t want to look too biker chic? Look for leather pieces with playful asymmetrical zippers and seams.

When accessorizing, don’t be afraid to layer on chains, spikes, and studs. Try pairing them with preppy pearls for a more refined punk look.

Try pairing some punk Doc Martens with some preppy knee socks. Argyle anyone?

Try a smokey eye to add some punk drama, but use dark purple eye shadow instead of black so your eyes don’t look too harsh. Skip the blush to attain that punk pale look, but add a preppy pop of nude lipstick to keep from looking too washed out.

27 OFF THE CUFF WINTER 2013

Ladies, don’t be afraid to steal your boyfriend’s favorite band t-shirt. Punk is based on music! Pair it with a preppy boyfriend blazer or pencil skirt for a polished finish.

COPLEY

CATWALK

Photography & Text by Rebecca Shinners

Oct. 2, 2013 – During Boston Fashion Week, design students were given the opportunity to showcase their own work in Copley Catwalk. Student designers from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design displayed their work in a runway show back to back with professional designers at Copley Place. The student designs were works of wearable art, made out of everything from mirrors to twist ties.

This semester’s show was entitled “Glow: a Night of Fluorescent Fashion,” and while few of the 13 designers and 1 collab incorporated the theme into their designs, some creations shined above the others.

First-time participant,” Anh Ngyuen designed a line that was short but sweet. Despite showing only two designs, Anh’s construction was nearly impeccable and her vision was clear compared some of her fellow designers. Her hard work was obvious. Anh’s first design was a white and red floral print dress with a black chiffon overlay on top of the skirt(1). One of the most memorable designs of the night, this dress was proof that Anh knows the point at which femininity and edginess meet. I feel like I had a right to be a little worried when designer Marina Vukicevik introduced her line by saying that almost all of her designs were black. Monochromatic lines are dangerous because designs are likely to get lost in the midst of the whole line, but Marina designed her line thoughtfully. The line was full of differently structured silhouettes that made it anything but boring. The two hooded pieces made the line…if only the models used them to their advantage!

On Saturday November 16th it was that time of year again: time for this school year’s first BU Fashion Retail Association (aka FAB) fashion show. All of Boston University’s who’s who of fashion—including some BU Best Dressed familiar faces— was in attendance and looking fabulous.

I would wear the black hooded dress in a heartbeat, while the blood red hooded cape(2) was reminiscent of Little Red Riding Hood without making the line seem kitschy. With a line of 7 pieces, design team Matt Dwan and Annie Yang were truly last but not least. When I saw the name and description of their line, VELVET PUSSY, in the program I wasn’t sure what to expect. Their black and gold-studded line (with a hint of bondage) gave a sense of sexual maturity to the entire night that not many young designers would be courageous enough contribute. VELVET PUSSY is for a girl who doesn’t take herself too seriously—one who is willing to mix feminine silhouettes with edgy sheer fabric only barely covering a studded bra(3-5). I dare say it was a line fit for NYFW.

4

Honorable mention goes to Jaquelyn Yuen who expertly used black sweatshirts as canvases for her amazingly realistic lion paintings(6). She was also the only designer to put a male model on the runway. Major props.
