Our return show, BABY, WE’RE BACK, felt really good. Not just for gallery volunteers and our artists. It was a true shot in the arm for the entire community. Our next thought is natural: let’s build on this momentum!
FALLING IN LOVE
Enter the 2021 AUTUMN INVITATIONAL. The perfect second step is found in our new trio of artists, and after all, it’s our Autumn Invitational—a show that is easy to fall for, year after year. SIMONE BAILEY CAMPBELL arrives with two new collections: “Fashion Stories,” a celebration of the empowering allure of fashion apparel and accessories; and “New Day,” a timely conversation about the challenges, transitions, and hope that describe our lives. LEONARD HOLLINGER returns with the cowboy iconography that helped win him top honors in the last UNDER $100 show, but this time a wider range of work reveals an unbridled process of experimentation that yields stunning results. RACHAEL MCLAUGHLIN, much like her colleagues, makes art as a form of therapy, just as much as it is self-expression. Her work is a joy: fabric poems that can be, at turns, beautiful and unapologetic and forthright. We are thrilled and inspired to be in the midst of such talent, and we hope you join us—from your patronage of this show to the entries many of you are sending in for our first juried show since the pandemic struck. There will be much more to love on our Wall and in our 3D case very soon! Tantaros Lauren Westenhiser Bob Gorchov, who together with Natalie Hope McDonald, helped keep the flame alive at Off the Wall during the pandemic, also sparked the 2017 Autumn Invitational with paintings that include “Watching Fire.”
SIMONE BAILEY CAMPBELL I’m an artist, designer and entrepreneur—a lover of all things beautifully designed in nature and by man. I am a Jamaican-born, New Jersey-based artist. My creative practice is influenced by my vibrant, colorful Caribbean upbringing and the urban grit of the cities I have lived in, as well as my love for fabulous fashion. My formal training is in interior and furniture design and I spent the last 16 years creating jewelry illustrations in New York City for the jewelry designers Slane & Slane and David Yurman. My more recent focus on painting and drawing developed as a need for a more fluid and intuitive form of expression; fortunately, it has been my art that has pulled me through difficult and dark periods of my life. Beyond the work you see here, murals have become a natural extension of my expression. It gives me an opportunity to expand on all the things I love about the creative process as well as interacting with and implementing community ideas. My murals usually include nature and abstract elements in bright colors. I find the use of thoughtfully combined colors instinctively conveys feelings and movement. My focus on simplified shapes also allows all ages to participate in creating artwork that now becomes their own. My intentions always are to use my art to connect, uplift and add joy to the lives of others.
“Fashion Stories” is a collection that evolved from my love of the drama, the self-expression and storytelling of fashion. My intent is to capture that expression with some of my favorite accessories.

“New Day” marks this moment in time as the world transitions into a new era. These elegantly vibrant, colorful masterpieces celebrate life and hope. The fresh color against the dark background emphasizes the new day that has arrived and signals a new perspective in the manner we see and approach our lives. I used flora and fauna that are found in the New Jersey area: Magnolia flowers, Dogwood, Virginia Bluebells flowers, Black Locust tree leaves, Female Oriole birds and American Persimmons.
LEONARD HOLLINGER In the frenzy of creation, I may not always think about what I want the end result to look like. Instead I put a brush or pencil to whichever surface medium lies before me. It’s not until I finish a piece of art, stare at it tirelessly and overanalyze it that I see bits of my past and my childhood running through them. “Why did I choose that color?” “Why did I put that stroke there?” “You chose those numbers for a reason.” A lot of these pieces were created just for me, as a form of therapy. An internal need to get out feelings, thoughts or emotions that I cannot always express in words.
So as you look at these pieces, keep in mind that you are looking at parts of myself laid out before you—and just maybe they’ll speak to something inside you as well.

rachael mclaughlin I’m an anxious queer artist. I use they/them. I make art about... 1) gay stuff (*mostly*) 2) my mental health journey (ew, I know, who isn’t, right?!) 3) Kink (cause it’s my favorite topic to explore) I studied Ceramics/Foundry/ Sculpture/Fibers/I don’t really know but it was fun at: School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I dropped out though because it was expensive— and I think I got kicked out? I love doing any kind of art that is process-based and falls underneath the craft category. Emotional regulation is not something that comes naturally. A dear friend once described it as feeling things at a 12 (on a 1–10 scale). Keeping my hands busy is key to stay out of my emotional brain. I watch RHOA and contemplate who would benefit from DBT the most (I’m going to say Kenya, but I’m not totally caught up yet). I hope you enjoy the work I made while I had a meltdown during the pandemic. Anyways, here’s WonderWall.
