Studies on Local Traditional Pattern

DESIGN ON KIOSK -Existing shoplot was solid & distrubtive to the streetscape of historic shophouses. -It was redesigned to be reduced in mass, and optimise in visual transparency.

SHADED WALKWAY AND PUBLIC SPACE

Before

-Five-foot way was gated.

Nyonya Beaded Shoes

The design taken inspiration for the existing outdoor catering of dining under the trees. A layer of wire mesh installed on top of transparent polycarbonate roofing to grow climbers and creepers, to cover the canopy with greens. Lightweight structure, totally open and roof design with high transparency minimised its visual impact on the traditional shophouses’ facade.

Tradi&onal Chinese Surname Lantern •  Almost all chinese families in Penang hung a pair of surname lanterns in front of their houses in the past. •  It has been a Chinese custom and it has nothing to do with religion or supers&&on.

-Unused street furniture due to unsuitable location. -Scattered, unorganised, unefficient and untidy dining hut.

After

-Metal gate proposed to be removed, free out the five-foor walkway for the public use, and maintained the original facade of shophouses. -Relocate unused street furniture to other strategic spot. -Dining area organized under one canopy in efficient space used.

PUBLIC SQUARE IN FRONT OF KUAN YIN TEMPLE A public square is proposed for the community to carry out activities such as chess playing and seating areas for puppet and opera shows. Refurbish the pathway from from the Penang Chinese Town Hall and connect it to the canopy on the other side of the road. Tree Shrine will be maintained and upgraded by providing proper shelter and also a praying altar around the tree.

Dining Under the Greens -Shadow effects of climbers and existing tree prevent direct heat gain at the dining area,

Customized Dining Set -Customized dining set able to be kept in minimal size elegently when unused and locked for security purposes. This is to minimized the mass in front of the facades of historic shophouses.

Team:

•  The main tool for papercut is scissors. Once they are owned by a master of papercut, they will become so supernatural that the papercuts beyond imagina=on flow out of his/her hands in the cha@ering of a common pair of scissors. Another tool for paper cu-ng is engraving knives which are necessary to enhance a sharpened effect or to make a delicate job.

-Shading devices designed along the street to enhance the pedestrian spine and recreate functional public spaces -Structural design taken inspiration from local pattern, a bamboo woven structure with medium for creepers and climbers to add another layer of direct heat protection
