_ADJACENT SUSTAINABILITY RESEARCH CENTER _A PROTOTYPE FOR URBAN SUSTAINABILITY ALONG ANKARA STREAM
_ANKARA ISKITLER Ankara is changing rapidly, and amid various urban interventions, it remains beset with an array of developmental issues involving growth, sprawl, economic stagnation, a dearth of natural open space, congested transport, environmental degradation, as well as socio-cultural isolation and stratification. The project we chose to focus on is emblematic of the fore-mentioned developmental issues in that it offers an alternative vision for the Ankara river basin and urban riverfront. The overarching intent is to suggest a sustainable urban living prototype for Ankara. A prototype that approaches sustainability across an array of dimensions: economic, environmental, cultural, aesthetic, and functional.

As mentioned, this effort concentrates on the redevelopment of the Ankara River watershed as it passes through critical urban foci. The site’s importance as a potential catalyst in the reimaging of Ankara’s central urban fabric, its economic potential, sheer scale, and proximity to potential interconnected greenways and transportation nodes suggested vast potential, both in terms of the scale of and the variety of design and planning interventions possible. As students we examined thirty kilometers of river basin at master planning scale. Many urban mobility, infrastructural and open space deficiencies throughout the city were identified and discussed. The teams then collaboratively generated, explored and synthesized alternative urban and site specific design concepts that address the creation of sustainable and livable urban fabric - intelligent urban development along the river corridor in which dense, walkable and mixed-use nodes are combined with strategically placed architectural interventions and conservation easements that preserve, revitalize and interconnect the many unrealized/underutilized natural, cultural and economic amenities existing throughout the area.

_SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CENTER _BILKENT ANKARA A Space, Science and Technology Centre which is part of the Bilkent University Campus which is designed to educate and inform the public on technology exist and advances being made in the areas of astronomy, space exploration, science and technologies such as genetics, biology, medical and information technology. The center will house exhibition space, public education space, demonstrations, multimedia presentation and have a fully functional observatory with a telescope and mount with imaging systems, an IMAX theatre and an observation platform.
Project mainly concentrates on a structural system that takes advantage of exterior forces to improve interior performance. The system ISOTRUSS is made of sımple components that interact in a complex way to maximize performance. It is composed of metal panels that rotate 45 degrees at each meter, supported by cables and steel tubes. Rotatıonal movement, tension and compression forces provide an opportunıty for the structure to take unusual forms. Isotruss creates a web structure to support the cladding as well as the slabs. To support slab square metal panels do not rotate. The placement of the slabs is inspired by the slope. Each one houses an exhibition hall. Hence, the spaces are spatially divided but visually connected.

The peak of structure at the entrance ıs marked by a huge sun collector that supports an electrical production unit inside the exhibition hall. The reflector panels also bring additional sunlight into the entrance hall. Interwoven isotrusses create a triangular pattern that is covered by etfe panels. Etfe covered steel plates support bigger spans rather than if conventional etfe panels were used. Material properties of etfe changes due to orientation and interior function. The building’s structure is intended to transform exterior forces to create greater spaces and improve performance. Thus, linking simple components into a huge system results in an organization that is at once complex and coherent.

_CULTURAL CENTER _A PROTOTYPE FOR URBAN SUSTAINABILITY _PRAGUE BUBNY According to Prague History Museum the Bubny rail yard was completed in 1873 and remained in operation for approximately 140 years, completely ceasing operations in 2013. Though bubny district historically can be traced back to Stone Age. The district’s most prominent historical underpinning is related to its industrial heritage, specifically its relationship with Czech Republic’s rail industry and the Industrial Revolution. The Bubny Train station was once the setting of Czech Republic’s darkest chapter in its history. In the 1940’s it was used as staging point for Czech Jews to be sent to concentration camp including Theresienstsdt, Tenezin and Auschwitz. Bilkent University, State University of Arizona and Archip (Architectural Institute In Prague) arranged a collaborative studio to conduct a site analysis to come up with a masterplan which would develop the site in terms of urban sustainability. The basis pedagogical intent of the program was to enhance cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary awareness, collaborating and learning in the students and faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Planning of the three participant Universities. All participant met at Archip to criticize the condition of the site and come up with possible solutions to revitalize the urban fabric.

Our site is Region 1 which is on the left side with close relationship with residential. According to our site analysis we decided to maintain existing greenery in boundary of the region and use it as urban park to include open activities for cultural events. To strengthen the idea we decided to design a cultural center. Since our site has multiple stops of public transportation so it will be easy to bring people without extra effort.

Curvilinear elements create a continuous web of structure which contains infrastructural functions such as plumbing and heating. Structurally and functionally co-housing project becomes continuous yet heterogeneous. Site is stepped by three levels to deal with topography. At the edge of the lake there is common facility which serves public needs such as dining meeting, laundry. Common facility is located on the deck above the water surface. Since permeability was the key concept every dwelling unit has easy access and also view of the facility.

Exteriors structural elements continue inside to create slabs of interior space. Therefore there is a strong and continues physical relationship of elements. Structural elements condensed at the entrance this is the result of cantilever structure causing shear moment at that point. Elements condense and alleviate according to structural forces caused by gravity.

_KILIM PROJECT _DESIGN BUILD LAB _ANKARA BILKENT Inspired by the Kilim Vase from the Paşabahçe/ZEVK-İ SELİM collection, The students of the Design/Build Lab of ARCH 252 class at Bilkent University are pleased to introduce their first built project. The art of weaving, a history that spans as far back as the days of human’s early settlements. Our Turkish textile arts have won the admiration of the world with their motifs, colors and materials. The Kilim Vases use motifs and forms that symbolize the sacredness of the male/female figures. We incorporated similar principles of weaving using wood dismantled from shipping pallets, increasing awareness of materials reuse and enhancing sustainable design thinking.

PURE PERFORMANCE DEPENS ON LIGHTNESS This architectural sculpture explores new ways of bringing innovates materials for lightness and rigidity. In terms of structure. Carbon fiber panels, aluminum truss and steel arc is defined to create an unusual dialog. Aluminum truss and carbon fiber panels intends the limits of steel tube as technology extend human. From core to exterior structure becomes light yet spans further. Structure scales down and rotates as it goes down the spline to show materials ability to be formed any shaped desired. Human intelligence is derived from doing things differently. This sculpture aims to use materials to innovate structural dialogues in between elements.

Once I heard a quote says ' Architecture is a genius solution to a non-existing problem.' In my opinion the very essence of any architectural design project has a loop which creates problem by itself and tries to solve it cleverly. Solution and problem derives from the same source which is quite interesting and contradictory at the same time. This architectural object which I designed shows my interpretation of that contradictory.
45
It is time to change the patterns of energy flow from fossils to waste. Rather than using energy and producing waste, objects might generate more efficient and inconvenient ways of energy flow. Material qualities and form provide an object that is able to exchange energy with surrounding environment immediately. Materials provide technical features for energy exchange and also form pushes the material abilities to limits for maximum efficiency. Structural components might become multi-layered materials to support the object and also control prevailing wind to flow into energy production turbines. Facade surface might extrude according to sun orientation to get as much as sun light to heat up PCM’s beneath them. Emergent process of high tech materials and form is able to generate complex objects that guarantee an engagement with environment.
