Creation In the beginning God made everything. On the first day, God said, “Let there be light.” He separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day” and the darkness “night.” On day two, God made the sky. On day three, God made dry land and the lakes. He made plants and trees to grow on the land. On day four, God put the sun, moon and stars in the sky. On day five, God made fish to swim in the seas and birds to fly in the sky. On day six, God made all the animals. Then God made people to be like Him. God said that everything He made was good. The full story is found in Genesis 1:1- 31; 2:1-3.

God Made Man and Woman

Chapter 2

On the sixth day, God took dust from the ground and made a man. He breathed life into the man and the man came alive. The man’s name was Adam. God placed Adam in a perfect garden. He told Adam to take care of it. He also told him that he could eat fruit from any tree in the garden except one. That fruit gave the power to know between right and wrong. God warned Adam that if he ate from it he would die. Then God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone.” So God made woman from one of Adam’s ribs. Adam named her Eve. God created them to love and help each other. This is why a man leaves his family and marries a woman. They become like one person. God blessed Adam and Eve and said, “Fill the earth with children and take care of it. Rule over all the animals.” God loves people very much. He wants people to know Him and love Him. The full story is found in Genesis 1:26-30; 2:7-9, 15–25.

The First Sin Satan is God’s enemy. He came to Eve in the garden as a snake. He told Eve to eat the fruit God had said not to eat. Eve believed the snake and ate the fruit. Then she gave the fruit to Adam. He ate it too. Adam and Eve chose to listen to Satan, not to God. This was the first sin. Right away things changed. Adam and Eve knew they had sinned. They tried to hide from God. But God knew what they had done. The world was not perfect anymore. For the first time, people would die. Because of their sin, God made Adam and Eve leave the garden. Their relationship with God was broken. Since then, all people have been separated from God by sin. But God still loved the people He had made. He made a promise. He said that one day someone from Eve’s family would defeat Satan and free people from sin! The full story is found in Genesis 3.

Chapter 4

Moses was a good man who loved God. God gave Moses a set of rules to share with the people. He gave these rules because He loves us. God made us and wants what is best for us. The first rule was the most important. God is the only One True God. He said that we are not to worship any other gods. Here are the other good rules God gave Moses. • You must not make an idol of any kind. • Do not use the name of God in a wrong way. • One day each week belongs to God. Rest from your work and worship Him. • Obey your parents. • Do not tell lies, steal or kill. • Husbands and wives must be faithful to each other. • Do not want what does not belong to you. David and Goliath God promised a man named Abraham that his family would become a great nation. God said that one day the nation would be a blessing to the whole world. The nation grew, but they had enemies. An army with a giant named Goliath made war with them. Goliath was three meters tall! Goliath wanted to fight someone! He said whoever won would win the war. But no one would fight him. They were afraid! One day a young man named David came to bring food to the soldiers. When he heard Goliath, he said, “I will fight him!” David only had five stones, a sling and his walking stick. Goliath saw David and shouted, “Am I a dog that you come at me with a stick?” He cursed David by the names of his gods. David said, “You come to me with sword and spear, but I come to you in the name of the Lord. This is the Lord’s battle, and He will give you to us!” David used his sling to throw one of his stones at Goliath. It hit Goliath in the forehead. He fell over dead. Later God chose David to lead the nation. As long as David was king, the people obeyed God. After David died, the people began making idols to worship. They forgot about God and His good rules. Their nation became weak and other nations ruled over them. The full story is found in Genesis 22:18; 1 Samuel 17.

Chapter 6

God did not forget His promises. In the garden He had promised to send someone to free people from their sins. God also promised that one day all of the people of the world would be blessed through Abraham’s family. Now the time had come for God’s promises to come true! God sent an angel to a girl named Mary. She was to be married to a man named Joseph. Joseph was from King David’s family. The angel said to Mary, “The Lord is with you!” Mary was very surprised to see the angel! “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “You will give birth to a son and name Him Jesus, the Son of God. He will be very great and His Kingdom will not end.” The angel said He would save people from their sins! Mary was a virgin. But like the angel said, she would soon give birth to a baby! Before the baby was born, Mary and Joseph had to travel to the town of Bethlehem. The town was full of visitors, so they had to stay with the animals. While they were there, the baby Jesus was born. His first bed was in a manger used for feeding animals. That night an angel came to some men who were taking care of sheep. The angel said, “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Saviour has been born today. You will find Him in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.” The men hurried into town to find Jesus. They left and told everyone what the angel had said to them about this child. The full story is found in Luke 1 and 2.

Doing the Right Thing Jesus obeyed his parents. He became wise. God was happy with Him and so were the people who knew Him. After Jesus grew up, He went out into the desert alone to pray. He was there for 40 days. He did not take any food. He wanted to be with His Father God more than He wanted to eat. Satan came to Jesus and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread.” Jesus said, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Then Satan tempted Jesus to prove He was God’s Son by telling Him to jump from a high building. Jesus said, “No!” He said it was wrong to test God. Satan tried once more. He told Jesus to bow down and worship him. “Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the LORD your God and serve only Him.’” Then the devil went away, and angels came and helped Jesus. The Daughter of Jairus

Chapter 8

Jesus taught the Good News about God in all the towns and villages. People began bringing to Him all who were sick. He healed them all! Some were bothered by evil spirits. Jesus told the spirits to leave, and they did! A man named Jairus came to Jesus. He fell at Jesus’ feet and cried, “My little girl is dying. Please come and heal her so she can live.” Jesus went with Jairus. As they walked, some people came from Jairus’ house. They said, “Your daughter is dead.” Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.” When they got to the house, people were crying. Jesus said, “Why are you crying? The child isn’t dead; she is only asleep.” The people laughed at Jesus. He took the girl’s parents and three of His friends to the room where she was lying. Jesus held her hand and said, “Little girl, get up!” The girl stood up! Everyone was amazed. Jesus had made her alive again! The full story is found in Matthew 4:24; 9:35; Mark 5.

Jesus Teaches About God Jesus wanted people to know how much God loves them. Jesus often told them about Him. Jesus said we are to love God more than anything or anyone. Then He said to love others as much as we love ourselves. We are to treat others the same way we want them to treat us. Jesus also said, “Do not worry about having food to eat or clothes to wear. Your Father in heaven already knows all your needs. If God cares for flowers that are here today and the put in the fire, He will take care of you!” Jesus loved to talk with His father God. One time He taught His followers to pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may Your name be kept holy. May Your Kingdom come soon. May Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Don’t let us give in to temptation. Save us from the evil one. You can pray this prayer, too! Food for the Hungry and a Storm

Chapter 10

Jesus climbed a hill and sat down with His disciples. He saw a crowd of people coming to look for Him. There were more than 5,000! Jesus asked, “Where can we buy bread to feed all these people?” One of His disciples said, “If we worked for months, we wouldn’t have enough money to feed them!” Then another disciple said, “There’s a boy here with five loaves of bread and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?” “Tell everyone to sit down,” Jesus said. Then Jesus took the bread and fish, and He gave thanks to God. Jesus began to tear the food in parts. Each time He tore some off, there was more food! The disciples began passing the food to the people. Everyone ate as much as they wanted. There was even food left over! Another time Jesus and His disciples were out in a boat. Jesus slept as they crossed the lake. A big storm came and their boat was filling with water. The disciples woke Jesus up, shouting, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” Jesus woke up and rebuked the wind and the waves. The storm stopped! Jesus asked them, “Where is your faith?” The disciples were amazed and said to each other, “Even the wind and waves obey Him!” The full story is found in John 6:3-11; Matthew 14:19; Luke 8:22-25.

Jesus Finishes His Work For three years, Jesus taught people about God’s love. He healed the sick and set people free from evil spirits. But not everyone liked Jesus. Many powerful people thought He might take away their power! They did not believe that Jesus was God’s Son. They sent soldiers to arrest Jesus. They wanted Him hung on a cross to die. The soldiers took Jesus away and beat Him. They forced Him to carry His own cross. Then they nailed Him to it. This was a terrible way to die. People who passed by said bad things about Jesus. But Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, they don’t know what they are doing.” Two bad men were hung beside Jesus. One of them believed that Jesus was God’s Son. Jesus forgave the man’s sin. He said the man would be with Him in heaven. The sky became dark, and three hours later Jesus died. Jesus’ body was put in a tomb. A big stone was put in front. Two days later some women went to Jesus’ tomb. They found that the stone had been rolled away. They went in, but they didn’t find the body of Jesus. They were afraid! What had happened to Jesus? Then the women saw two angels in bright clothes. The angels said, “Jesus is not here. He is alive!” The women were so happy! They left and told everyone that Jesus was alive!
