Urban Mosque The Urban Mosque project site location was centered in Harvard Square, Cambridge. Program called for a prayer space for those who wish to practice Islam with enough space to accommodate over one hundred people at once. After exploring the site and its context the remaining programs were self-determined, then implemented into the design. Another design challenge was to make it public to everyone who wants to utilize the space regardless of their religion.

Iterative Process

Studio: Lower East Side Project Intro

The project is based in New York City, more specifically, the Lower East Side. The task at hand is to design a budget hotel with eighty rooms, a lobby area, and retail space, along with one other program for us to determine. The Lower East Side is a part of New York City that has not yet lost its old time charm. My concept is Based off two words that i felt captured the essence of the site. They are “memory” and “artifact”. Appreciating the value of something through is materiality, and seeing the object as something that has memories engraved into it.

Iterative Process THROUGH THE ITERATIVE PROCESS OF SKETCHING AND BUILDING MODELS, QUESTIONS WERE RAISED ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TWO CHOSEN WORDS AND HOW TO MAKE SENSE OF THE THESIS OVERALL. IS THE THESIS TRYING TO SHOW HOW THE MEMORY CREATES THE ARTIFACT? OR IS IT THE ARTIFACT THAT CREATES THE MEMORY? THE ITERATIVE PROCESS SHOWS THE PROGRESSION OF A PERSON EXPERIENCING THE SPACE IN SUCH A WAY THAT MOMENTARY FACTORS WILL HINDER AT THE INDIVIDUALS MEMORY. A PARTICULAR SPACE WHERE ONE EXPERIENCES A MOMENT, IS THEN REVEALED AGAIN FROM ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE, THUS REINTRODUCING THAT EXPERIENCE AND RECREATING THAT MEMORY WITHIN THE SPACE THAT THEN BECOMES AN ARTIFACT. THE MODELS EXPRESS FEELINGS OF CAPTURING, CHANNELING, AND REFORMATION, ALL OF WHICH TIE BACK TO THE IDEA OF A MEMORY THAT EXPRESSES THE APPRECIATION OF AN ARTIFACT.
