A MESSAGE FROM OUR
Executive Director & CEO & President, Board of Trustees In 1885, Ohio History Connection was founded as the Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society. Over the past 134 years a lot more than our name has changed. The way we collect and preserve our history has evolved, along with our thinking about those that came before us. Similarly, what people want from history organizations has changed. It’s essential that we continue to provide Ohioans with meaningful and engaging experiences to demonstrate history’s relevance today. Why share Ohio history? Promoting and sharing history is not just about posterity— history has the ability to help us become better citizens and create a better future. Exploring history teaches valuable critical thinking skills. This year, more than 10,000 Ohio students had the chance to become historians. Through our Ohio History Day program, an affiliate of National History Day, students as young as middle school perform research, interpret complex moments from the past, and present on their findings. According to National History Day research, students who participate in this program perform better on standardized tests across multiple subjects. Research also shows it supports their ability to read critically, reference appropriate sources, and support an argument with evidence—qualities that can lead to a successful adulthood.
History shapes personal values, informing our collective identity. Nearly 400,000 people visited one of our 58 historic sites and museums across Ohio. More than 50,000 school children took field trips to those same sites, which gave them the opportunity to discover American Indian earthworks like Serpent Mound, presidential homes like Rutherford B. Hayes’s and natural wonders like Glacial Grooves and Cedar Bog Nature Preserve. This past March, we opened an interactive exhibit that served as our first step in creating an envisioned new museum experience. Ohio—Champion of Sports at the Ohio History Center profiles greats like Jesse Owens, LeBron James, Stephanie Hightower and Katie Smith. Through their stories, visitors learn how sports shape our identity through social connection, adversity, innovation and victory. History inspires leadership. Preserving and sharing the stories of people taking a stand, like Colonel Charles Young who fought discrimination and went on to become the highest-ranking African American officer in the U.S. Army during WWI, can inspire new generations of Ohioans. Stories of people doing what’s never been done before, like Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the moon, inspire us to believe that anything is possible.
History has the ability to help us become better citizens and create a better future.

Preserving history fosters vibrant communities. Ohio has the 3rd highest number of National Register listings in the country. To further celebrate our love of historic places, this year we partnered with over 250 local history sites all across the state to showcase behind the scenes tours of some of Ohio’s most treasured places. This program, known as Ohio Open Doors, drew national media attention which put a deserved spotlight on the incredible history in our backyards. History is an economic driver. The economic impact of the federal historic preservation tax credit program in Ohio, which supports responsible redevelopment of historic properties, stands at a total investment of more than $6 billion. Ohio proudly led the country this year for the most successfully completed and certified federal historic tax credit projects. History preserved and shared is a gift for future generations. Two significant strides toward making the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks the first World Heritage site in Ohio were achieved this year. Earlier this summer our confidence grew as a collection of Frank Lloyd Wright sites was added to the prestigious list. The Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks, once inscribed, will be the 25th World Heritage site in the country. Through our united efforts, we are shining a spotlight on one of the best examples of monumental landscape architecture in the world. Also this year, Licking County Common Pleas Court Judge W. David Branstool ruled that our acquisition of the lease for the Octagon Earthworks in Newark, currently occupied by Moundbuilders Country Club, is necessary and for a public purpose. The country club has filed an appeal, which will be heard later this year. We are steadfast in our effort to make this ancient American Indian site accessible to all.
Understanding the intersection of culture and history makes us better citizens. With a commitment to developing relationships with federally recognized, Ohio-affiliated tribes, this year we hosted our third annual Tribal Nations Conference in Columbus. Bringing together Thomas V. delegates from 12 Chema federally-recognized tribes, including two tribal chiefs, the conference continues to strengthen the bond between Ohio and Tribal Nations to focus on preserving and sharing accurate American Indian history. How we do our work has changed over the years to reflect and support the communities we live in today. Today, an understanding of our past helps people become critical thinkers, it inspires leadership and protects our democracy. Preserving and sharing Ohio history makes communities more vibrant and supports economic development. We thank all who have contributed to the support of Ohio history. A special thanks to Governor Mike DeWine, the Ohio General Assembly, our Board of Trustees, and our donors, members and volunteers across the state who make our work possible.
