Summer 2014

Dear alumni and friends! For many on campus, Commencement marks the end of the academic year. For me, however, Alumni Weekend is that marker. It is truly the last major campus event of the year, and, when it is over, we make a big pivot to begin preparations for the next academic year. Two weeks after our alumni say goodbye to the lifelong friends they made as students many years ago, Summer Orientation begins for incoming first-year students. For three consecutive Fridays in June, we welcome new students and their parents (even grandparents as I discovered this year) to campus to ensure that their transition to ONU is smooth and seamless. New students will make new friends, and, years from now, they will reconnect with them at an Alumni Weekend reunion because, at ONU, friendships endure. Chris and I thoroughly enjoyed the many opportunities we had this year to meet with Northern alumni near and far. Our alumni events, as they always do, renew the deep appreciation we have for the incredible lives our graduates lead. Three of those lives are noteworthy, both for their accomplishments and for the way they represent the quality of and values ONU. In April, I had the pleasure to present John Bishop, BA ’72, as an inductee to the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges’ Hall of Excellence. The Hall of Excellence was established by Ohio’s private colleges to showcase the exceptional talent that comes from the state’s independent institutions. John, an outstanding business and civic leader in Columbus, recently retired as CEO for The Motorists Insurance Group. He joined the company the day after graduating from Northern and will remain as its chairman. In his acceptance speech, John spoke of the great impact his years at Ohio Northern had on his life. Featured in this issue is a story about Barb Centrella, BA ’89. Barb’s successful 24-year event-planning career at Disney reveals a trailblazer and a pioneer. She was the first ONU student to participate in the Disney College Program, a path many of our students have followed over the years. Barb launched her own company recently, breaking new ground and blazing another trail on her professional journey. And then there’s Jim Gallagher, JD ’79, executive vice president, general counsel and chief administrative officer of John Hancock Financial in Boston. Jim returned to campus during Alumni Weekend to be one of four Distinguished Alumni Award recipients. After the tragic Boston Marathon bombing, Mayor Thomas Menino asked Jim to spearhead the relief effort and get it going quickly. Jim helped to found the Boston One Fund and, in a matter of months, helped to raise $80 million for relief to the victims of the bombing. John, Barb and Jim have made important contributions to their professions and to their communities. They share a common quest for excellence, and they share being representative of ONU alumni throughout the world who make similar contributions every day where they live and work.

Hello alumni and friends!

on the cover

Summer is here on the Tundra! While most of the faculty and students are away from campus, that doesn’t mean there isn’t anyone in Ada! It’s so wonderful to see incoming freshmen at summer orientations and the many, many summer camps taking place on campus. I am always impressed with how well Ohio Northern hosts its many athletic and academic camps for middle and high school students. I’m sure there are some future Polar Bears already falling in love with our campus! Spring at Ohio Northern held so many exciting times, we could fill our entire journal with nothing but a list of all the activities. Commencement was a great opportunity to see our students become alumni, and the class of 1964 was truly a blast to see at Alumni Weekend! We are already in full swing planning for Homecoming on Oct. 3-5. We can’t wait to celebrate with all our alumni, but especially with the classes of 2009, 2004, 1999, 1994, 1989, 1984, 1979, 1974, 1969 and 1964! Watch for the brochure in your mailbox later this summer! I hope you enjoy our feature article on our alumni and students in the Disney family. It is amazing to see how so many of our alumni are truly fulfilling their own dreams and the dreams of others. For a relatively small, rural university, it is remarkable that we still prepare our graduates to be anything or anywhere they want to be. There are still a number of alumni events happening in an area near you this summer and early fall. Be sure to continue to check onualumni.com to find out where you can join your fellow Polar Bears next! Go Polar Bears! Sarah Prasher Hays, BSME ’05 Director of Alumni Relations

Most of us understand the power of Disney. It’s something that grabs hold of us when we’re young. At its core, Disney is a company that makes dreams come true. But it’s not just its customers or theme park visitors who look to Disney for fantasy come to life. It’s a dream for many people to help enable that unique brand of Disney wish fulfillment. These individuals devote their careers to placing smiles on faces, filling the air with laughter, and invoking a sense of wonder.

4

Ohio Northern is no stranger to such career goals. Many, many individuals have taken their first steps toward Disney with a stop in Ada, Ohio. Here are but a few.

Sarah Novak

Abbie Sterling

Following Her DIsney Dream While it wasn’t completely obvious all the time, Abbie Sterling, BA ’12, found it easy to uncover her dream job, once she gave it some thought. “During my senior year at ONU, I was sitting in my room, wondering what my next adventure would be,” she remembers. “I thought about the brands that had impacted my life in positive ways.” During this brainstorming session, Sterling recalled a childhood memory that went on to inspire her emerging career. “I was thinking about how I went to Walt Disney World when I was younger with my family. On one of these trips, I was too excited, wandered off and got lost in the Magic Kingdom. A cast member immediately noticed, gave me some ice cream, and entertained me as her team worked to re-unite me with my family. As I recalled this memory, I thought, ‘I want to bring similar happiness to people using my talents and skills.’” So, after graduating from Northern, Sterling joined Disney for a 12-month Professional Internship with Walt Disney World Executive Communications. During this assignment, she developed her skills, built relationships across the company and sought unique learning opportunities outside of her internship.

These experiences took her one step closer to a permanent Disney role, as she returned to Executive Communications as a specialist in a six-month temporary assignment after her internship. When this assignment ended in December 2013, Sterling took another temporary role in January 2014 with Public Affairs for Disney Cruise Line, Disney Vacation Club and Adventures by Disney. A month into this role, she accepted a full-time position on the team as executive communications specialist.

Sarah Novak, BA ’14, is playing the role of a lifetime. The musical theatre major is a Fairy Godmother in Training at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique inside Cinderella’s Castle at Disney. With pixie dust and the wave of a magic wand, she transforms young girls into princesses with a magical experience that includes makeovers and princess training. “It takes an immense amount of creativity and storytelling skills to perform as a Fairy Godmother in Training,” says Novak. “Being in character for 12 hours a day requires more endurance than any character in any show I’ve ever done.” Launching a performance career at the “happiest place on earth” was the fulfillment of a childhood dream for Novak. Growing up, she visited Disney several times with her family and was always dazzled by the characters, elaborate costumes and choreography. Bright, bubbly and outgoing, she now loves to create that same magic for children from all over the world. She’s even learning new languages – Spanish, Portuguese, German and French – for her role. “Smiling and bringing people happiness is my favorite part,” she says. “I’ve learned that a smile is the same in every language.”

“One of the nice things about my job is that my days are always different,” she says. Sometimes, she works behind the scenes as part of a technical team that brings executive events to life. Other times, she provides communications support with graphics, speeches, letters and presentations. All told, Sterling’s adventurous route to full-time Disney employment was worth it. “I couldn’t be happier!” she laughs. “It feels great to have a career I love.”

Stacia Wake Although Stacia Wake, BSBA ’86, always had a great respect and admiration for the Disney brand, it wasn’t her lifelong dream to work for the company. Instead, after graduating from Ohio Northern, she spent several years working in financial marketing for the credit union industry in New York.

Barb Centrella

Event planner extraordinaire

6

Barb (Vitantonio) Centrella, BA ’89, was the driving force behind many major Disney events during the last two decades, including the launch of four Disney cruise ships, the openings of Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Honk Kong Disneyland, and the annual “What’s Next?” Super Bowl campaign and parade. An event-planner extraordinaire, she left Disney last August to launch her own event and marketing company called Grapevine Events. “It was a wonderful journey,” says Centrella, reflecting on her 24-year Disney career. “But it’s exciting to be out on my own, and it’s giving me much more flexibility to be with my family.” Centrella was the first ONU student to participate in the Disney College Program. She returned to Disney after receiving her degree in sports management and organizational communication and, within a few years, transitioned into the marketing department. As the lead event director for one of the world’s largest entertainment companies, she skillfully managed diverse teams, multi-million-dollar budgets and worldwide audiences. She learned to be highly organized and unflappable. “Every event had so many moving parts, and they were constantly changing. I had to always stay ahead of the curve and be prepared for anything. And, of course, it’s always the details that matter the most,” she says. “But I truly enjoyed the variety of the work. One day I could be working on a cruise ship, and the next day I would be on a soundstage or in front of Cinderella Castle. It was always fresh.” Centrella wasn’t the only family member employed at Disney. Her father, Michael Vitantonio, BSEd ’64, worked at Disney for approximately six years in merchandising at Downtown Disney.

She eventually relocated to Orlando, Fla., to work in banking technology, but she didn’t come to Disney until she received a tip from a former supervisor. “I was contacted by my former leader, who was now at Disney, and she was excited to share with me that there was a position with their corporate marketing team,” she says. That was 14 years ago, and since then, Wake’s Disney career has evolved from direct marketing manager for Disney Institute and Group and Convention Marketing, account manager/marketing manager for Epcot Business Development (a group that became Parks Business Development), and marketing manager for Corporate Alliances. “My daily responsibilities are managing the marketing, PR and outreach activities of our Corporate Alliances sponsors,” Wake says. “These are the companies and organizations that sponsor various attractions or experiences at our parks and resorts.” Wake cites many highlights from her 14 years with Disney (“No day is ever the same”): Watching her first exhibit in INNOVENTIONS at Epcot first open to guests. Working with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals to develop, plan and execute their Champions events. Singing in the Candlelight Processional Choir at Epcot. Spending a year as a traditions assistant, teaching hundreds of new incoming cast members the heritage and traditions of Disney during one-day training classes. Even with all these experiences, nothing compares to taking each of her nephews to the Walt Disney World Resort for the first time. “While I am sure that I will have other magical experiences in my career at Disney, none is more important to me than sharing it with my family.”

Jeff Wiley From a young age, Jeff Wiley, BSME ’07, knew that he wanted to someday work at Disney. He made this decision while in middle school after taking numerous trips to Walt Disney World with his family. As he grew older, he began to realize that his best chance at becoming a Disney cast member would be through his aptitude for math and science. This realization led him to major in mechanical engineering at Ohio Northern University. While at Ohio Northern, a physics professor, Dr. Bruce Johansen, told Wiley about an upcoming campus visit by Disney Imagineer and ONU alumnus Michael Tschanz, BSEE ’84. The opportunity to speak to someone who was already employed at Disney greatly encouraged Wiley to further pursue his goal. He next was accepted into the Disney College Program, a semester-long paid internship at Walt Disney World, and worked at the Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe in the Magic Kingdom Park. On one occasion during this internship, Wiley was able to shadow Tschanz for third-shift testing. Wiley returned to the Disney College Program in 2007 and worked at Soarin’ in EPCOT. In 2008, he became the first ONU intern to join Tschanz’s team. After a year as an intern, he was hired as a full-time cast member in 2010 and was instrumental in the design and testing of the enhancements at Walt Disney World’s Space Mountain. He also was part of a team that made breakthroughs in software testing and integration. Wiley currently works in Simulation and Analysis, which was created by Tschanz within the Design and Engineering team at Walt Disney World. In Simulations and Analysis, Wiley helps design new rides and updates existing attractions. He currently is working on the design and construction of Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, a new roller coaster attraction at Magic Kingdom Park set to open in 2014. This design has been in production for more than three years.

ONU alumni and students working in the Technology and Analysis Department of Disney’s Design and Engineering Organization, from left to right: Kathryn Skobrak, a senior electrical engineering major from New Albany, Ohio; Alicia Hathaway, BSEE ’12; Andrew Marshall, BSEE ’12; Michael Tschanz, BSEE ’84; Patrick McNaull, BSME ’08; and Jeff Wiley, BSME ’07.

Jim Schneider Henry Walker

Where Dreams Come True

8

Disney truly is a place “where dreams come true.” Just ask Jim Schneider, BSBA ’91, and his wife, Amy. Schneider quit a lucrative career in the insurance industry to follow an inspiring dream to start a faith-based eyewear company. Trying to break into a highly competitive industry during an economic downturn probably wasn’t the smartest move, Schneider reflects. But he put his trust in God, and he caught a break. A magical, Disneyesque break. A business acquaintance helped him land the sole stage sponsorship of the annual Christian music festival at Disney World Resort in Orlando in 2009. “We wanted to launch our company with a big, big splash, and we ended up launching it with one of the biggest brands in the world,” says Schneider. Eyes of Faith – Schneider’s company – garnered instant credibility and national brand recognition in its target market because of Disney’s “Night of Joy.” The event even resulted in key partnerships with VeggieTales and Women of Faith. Five years later, more than 600 optical professionals across the country carry Eyes of Faith eyewear. And Schneider has been able to donate more than 20,000 pairs of prescription glasses, reading glasses and sunglasses to impoverished people in countries like Kenya and Peru through his company’s “Wear and Share” program. “Helping people in need is why I started the company,” he says. “The whole purpose is to show people the love of Christ through the gift of sight. And I honestly don’t think we’d be where we are at today if it weren’t for Disney.”

A Magical Experience Disney guests expect a seamless vacation experience, and Harry Walker, BS ’08, makes sure that expectation is met. He is one of 25 Disney cast members who troubleshoot MyMagic+, a system that allows guests to plan their entire trip online. He fields calls from guest service centers at more than 30 Disney locations. With an intimate knowledge of the ins and outs of every Disney reservation system – from ride and attraction passes, to show tickets, to hotel and dining reservations – he can fix glitches fast, seemingly with the wave of a magic wand. “I just love diving deep into a problem and solving it so that our guests can have that magical experience,” he says. Walker started at Disney in 2006 as a plant science intern and then transitioned into a full-time career in guest services in 2009, where his outgoing personality and problem-solving abilities really shine. Walker also is a volunteer at Give Kids the World Village, a special resort for children facing life-threatening illnesses and their families. “Disney is truly a dream place to work,” he says.

Patrick McNaull Sorting out the Possible At the intersection of imagination and ingenuity is Patrick McNaull, BSME ’08, a senior systems engineer at the Walt Disney World Resort. McNaull sorts out possible solutions from the impossible for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts using sophisticated processes for simulation and analysis. If the software doesn’t exist to perform

a simulated scenario, McNaull and his team create it. They test ideas for a wide range of projects, from Walt Disney World Resort’s extensive transportation network to attractions such as the new Seven Dwarfs Mine Train opening at Magic Kingdom Park this spring. McNaull started full-time at the Walt Disney World Resort in

2011 after receiving his master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Ohio State University. “I’m an engineer and a musician, so I have a creative side,” he says. “That creativity helps me to realize there is always more than one path to a solution.”

A career in Yellow Shoes Like a lot of Disney cast members, the dream began early for Kelly (Craddock) Briley, BA ’08. “From my first trip to Walt Disney World when I was 8 years old, I knew I wanted to work for this company.” To make that happen, Briley completed one Disney College Program while a student at Ohio Northern and, after graduation, moved to Florida and completed a second program.

Kelly Briley

“Both of these programs gave me experience working in the day-to-day theme park operation, providing me with skills and understanding that I still use to this day,” she says. After working in the parks, Briley joined Disney Youth Programs as an event and sales coordinator supporting competitive music festivals (Festival Disney and Disney Honors) and youth events (Disney Grad Nite and Disney’s Night of Joy). “These roles gave me a great understanding of the event and sales market for youth groups,” she says. After leaving Youth Programs, Briley worked with Destination Sales in a business integration role, in which she was responsible for providing sales and marketing collateral to Central Florida ticket sales locations. This led to her current role as a traffic coordinator with Disney’s Yellow Shoes Creative Group, the in-house advertising agency for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, which supports Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, Adventures by Disney and Aulani.

Duff founded “Jump for Opportunity,” a global skydiving event in Orlando, Fla., which raised more than $130,000 for microfinance loans to support business startup capital for the working poor in Tanzania. In 2012, he received the Empact Award at the White House in recognition for his achievements in entrepreneurship. Again, in 2013, he received the Empact Award and was recognized at the United Nations. He also was recognized by the Logan County Chamber of Commerce with the 2012 Entrepreneurship of the Year Award. Duff received the William L. Robinson Young Alumni Award from ONU in 2008. He has served on the alumni board as vice president, and he has served on the Dicke College of Business Administration’s Advisory Board. Currently, he is a member of Ohio Northern’s Board of Trustees, and he is the vice chairman of the committee on enrollment. Duff is an annual member of the Henry Solomon Lehr Society.

Lacrosse Coaches named; competition to begin in 2016

Nat St. Laurent and Beth Hemminger have been named the first head coaches of Ohio Northern University’s new men’s and women’s lacrosse programs, respectively. The Polar Bears will begin playing lacrosse as a varsity sport in spring 2016. St. Laurent previously served as an assistant lacrosse coach at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., where he was

offensive coordinator. In 2013, the Generals finished the season ranked eighth nationally and scored the fourth-most goals in program history. St. Laurent earned a Bachelor of Science in unified elementary and special education from Keuka College in Keuka Park, N.Y., where he was a member of the lacrosse team. He also attained a Master of Arts in educational leadership and policy studies from Virginia Tech in 2009.

Nat St. Laurent

Hemminger was the head coach at Wittenberg for the past three seasons and guided her teams to a 38-12 record and a perfect 22-0 league record during that time. She also served as head coach at St. Anne’s Catholic High School in Hamilton, Ohio, in 2010. Hemminger has assistant coaching experience at New Haven (Conn.) from 2005-09 and again in 2011, and at her alma mater, Wooster, in 2004. She is a 2004 graduate of Wooster, earning four varsity letters

Beth Hemminger

in soccer and lacrosse. In lacrosse, she was a threetime All-American and was named the 2003 North Coach Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2003. In soccer, she earned All-NCAC honors four straight years and third-team All-Great Lakes Region honors in 2000 as a starting forward.

Congratulations! Congratulations to the Southeast Region, winners of ONU’s first Polar Bear Nation Regional Challenge! Each region did an amazing job gathering paws for participation! Something to remember, though: when people come together in the Polar Bear Nation Regional Challenge – everyone wins! Ohio Northern wins, the students win, and yes, even alumni win! Here are some pretty BIG WINS from this year’s challenge: • ALUMNI GIVING has a HUGE impact on Northern’s ability to secure student scholarships and grant money from foundations and corporations, making the University more financially sound • Alumni participation is one of the key metrics used to determine where ONU stands in rankings from institutions like U.S. News & World Report • Each time Ohio Northern is able to make an improvement to campus or provide something bigger and better for a student, it is because of participation from alumni • When ALUMNI give, it increases the value of their degrees, showing a vote of POLAR confidence in an Ohio Northern education

BEAR

THANK YOU all to of the Polar Bears who helped gather paws for participation this year and have made a difference at ONU. To check out the final standings, visit www.onu.edu/ onuregionalchallenge. Stay tuned this summer for round two of the Polar Bear Nation Regional Challenge, and may the best region win! 11

ONU alumni social media (such as our alumni Facebook page, alumni club Facebook pages and Twitter) provide the opportunity to stay connected and up to date by the minute. Alumni events in different cities around the country bring ONU to your own backyard! These events give alumni who live farther away from campus the opportunity to meet and mingle with other area Polar Bears, receive updates about the University, and share their love of Northern. Polar Careers for alumni provides the ability to meet with a professional advisor either in person or via phone conference, post your résumé or search for jobs on Polar Careers (powered by Simplicity), attend career fairs, and receive advice on creating or adjusting your résumé. ONU Alumni Weekend is a special weekend for the 50th class reunion and the golden years class reunions. In 2015, we will honor the 50th class reunion of 1965. All golden class years (1964 and earlier) also are encouraged to come celebrate. ONU Homecoming is an annual opportunity for all alumni to come back and visit campus. Classes that are celebrating their reunions have special events and photos. This fall, we especially look forward to welcoming back the classes of ’09, ’04, ’99, ’94, ’89, ’84, ’79, ’74, ’69, and ’64. Homecoming is the weekend of Oct. 3-5, 2014. Mark your calendars and plan to attend!

Opportunities for ONU Alumni Involvement

Alumni Club Volunteers: Alumni Clubs are currently located in the Carolinas, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Indianapolis and Washington, D.C. The clubs depend on dedicated volunteers to help plan local events. If there is not a club in your local area and you are interested in starting a new club, please let us know. ONU College Campus Volunteers: Alumni may choose to interview perspective pharmacy students, speak in a class on their area of expertise, or judge a student competition in any one of our colleges: Arts & Sciences, Business Administration, Engineering, Law and Pharmacy. Alumni Association Board: Positions on the Alumni Association Board are filled as they become vacant and require an application and board approval.
