The truest tradition at Ohio Northern University is one of progress. We have a rich history of evolving to meet society’s ever-changing needs. That’s why you see so many of our students earning their majors in one building, only to hustle across campus to work on their two minors. So go ahead and intern for the FBI. Conduct chemistry research to improve local water supplies. Roll up your sleeves and lay the foundation for a successful future. This combination of ambitious students and an institution founded on outcomes creates graduates prepared to take on each day – as well as the challenges of tomorrow.

IT’S

WHEN YOU

OUT HERE, FAR AWAY FROM CITY LIGHTS, A PIONEERING ATTITUDE PERVADES. WITHOUT THE DISTRACTIONS OF A BIG CITY, WE HONE IN ON EXPLORING WHAT EXCITES US, SOLVING WHAT PUZZLES US AND PURSUING WHAT OTHERS ONLY PONDER. FROM CLEAN-ENERGY INITIATIVES TO OUTOF-THE -BOX ENTREPRENEURSHIP, WE DON’T JUST LEARN IT ALL—WE DO IT ALL . OUR 342-ACRE CAMPUS IN ADA, OHIO, IS AN OPEN FRONTIER FOR THE BOLD AND AMBITIOUS.

ACTUALLY

Before graduating, Matt Pierce applied his talents as a civil engineering student to the construction of three wind turbines on campus. Standing 220 feet tall and generating 1.2 megawatts of energy, it’s a feat few other students can add to their résumés.

SEE THEM.

Actors, actresses and stage crew at ONU added wire flying to their repertoires after a workshop hosted by the Department of Theatre Arts. With this rare theatric skill, ONU students have a distinctive advantage at every audition.

For an undergraduate research project, ONU students Joanne Berry and Louis Streacker discovered a new method to identify toxic runoff into Ohio’s rivers. Their time in the field improved not only their capabilities as researchers, but also Ohio’s environmental future.

FROM ZERO TO NASCAR

Combining the majors of sport management and electronic media, Tyler was able to tailor his education to prepare him for his dream job. Before graduation day, NASCAR called to offer not an internship, but a full-time producer role.

IN FOUR YEARS

It’s stories like these that we strive to create. In every student, we see potential. And so long as these students bring ambition, we’ll be there to provide the opportunities for success.

COURTNEY OLSON Students in the sciences have been honored for ten consecutive years by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program, the premier undergraduate award of its type in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. Courtney Olson was honored for her research essay “Observations of Dimer Behavior of a DonorAcceptor Cross-Conjugated Molecule in Different Solvents.” She also is writing a laboratory procedure for the department’s differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) to be used in future physical chemistry laboratory courses.

TYLER BURNETT WHEN TYLER BURNETT ARRIVED TO ONU AS A FRESHMAN, HE HAD AN IDEA OF WHERE HE WANTED TO GO— NASCAR. IN HIGH SCHOOL, HE HAD FOUND A PASSION FOR BROADCASTING ONLINE RACES, BUT IT WAS NOT UNTIL AFTER HIS TIME AT OHIO NORTHERN THAT THIS PASSION COULD BE TRANSFORMED INTO A CAREER.

KENDRA HEARN Then: Now:

Pharmaceutical business and management major Product/market manager with Cardinal Health

“ONCE I GOT INVOLVED WITH CAMPUS ORGANIZATIONS, I FOUND OUT WHO I WAS AS A PERSON, AND DEFINITELY AS A LEADER.”

To say that Kendra Hearn was merely “involved” is an understatement. She was captain of ONU’s varsity cheerleaders, secretary of multicultural affairs in Student Senate, and president of the Zeta Phi Chapter of Sigma Iota Epsilon. She was a member of the Gospel Ensemble, the Black Student Union, the Muslim Student Association, Omicron Delta Kappa, President’s Club, Ultimate Faith Outreach, the Society for the Advancement of Management, Alpha Lambda Delta, Habitat for Humanity, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She even served as a student representative on the Presidential Selection Committee.

AGAINST 16 ONU ENGINEERS — NOTRE DAME DOESN’T STAND A CHANCE

Each year, Ohio Northern University squares off against the University of Notre Dame on the football field In this setting, you might think that ONU is the underdog. But then, you’d be wrong. Because for this particular game, it’s the engineering students from both colleges who compete. Building robot quarterbacks, running backs, receivers and linemen to play all four quarters, Ohio Northern’s Polar Robotics team has emerged victorious against the Fighting Irish two years running. Our success as a robotic football dynasty is possible because we do not limit our engineers to classrooms and textbooks. Internships and student-led research is how we learn at ONU, and so the engineering students we send to compete are competent not only in engineering theory, but also in execution. Just ask the students over at Notre Dame.

“I had the opportunity to complete four pharmacy rotations at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. My first rotation was in pharmacy leadership and management followed by working directly with renal and liver transplant patients. The final two areas focused on medication safety and oncology. All of these rotations provided experience in both direct and indirect patient care to prepare me for my future in pharmacy.

ALL ROADS IN ADA LEAD TO SUCCESS With top-ranked programs and opportunities outside the classroom, any path you choose at ONU will be grounded in concrete applications for the future. But the best part is that you never really have to choose. Our campus is an open frontier where engineers can be artists and artists can be entrepreneurs. At ONU, we embrace the overlap in every field.

MUD VOLLEYBALL PITS One of our oldest traditions, the Founders Hall Mud Volleyball Tournament happens here every year.

DIAL-ROBERSON STADIUM/ KERSCHER STADIUM 3,500 ONU Polar Bears can fit inside these stadiums on game day to cheer on our football, soccer, lacrosse, and track & field teams.

This map is just the beginning. There’s much more to ONU—and Ada, Ohio—than any map can really convey. So see our campus for yourself. The people you’ll meet will help you understand for yourself how our firm foundation can launch you toward success.

KING HORN SPORTS CENTER The home of ONU women’s volleyball—the team with the NCAA all-divisions record for most consecutive winning seasons.

MEYER HALL OF SCIENCE In this building sits our nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer—a tool essential in validating the composition of molecules for faculty and student research projects.

THE TUNDRA At the heart of ONU, home of the Polar Bears, we attend live concerts, watch outdoor movies, play frisbee golf, and study in the sunshine. And every year, the Tundra is the site of our Polar Plunge, where we brave the cold to raise money for charity.

FREED CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS Beyond performances, our performing arts center holds countless lecture series such as the College of Engineering’s Spotts Lecture. Here, lecturers ranging from the CEO of NextLabs to the Academy Award-winning director of Disney-Pixar’s Up have spoken.

TO THOSE NEW TO TRYING NEW THINGS —— PUSH OUT YOUR PAST. TRY NOT TO TRY. At ONU, we want you to explore, to get your hands dirty and expand your perspective. That’s where life’s most valuable lessons live. It’s why you see the captain of the volleyball team working tirelessly to earn her engineering degree and fulfill her student government responsibilities. It’s a process for you to overcome obstacles and emerge more confident, with the experiences and tools to sculpt the rest of your life. Your unofficial welcome to ONU comes in the fall during our annual Founders Hall Mud Volleyball Tournament. Here, you won’t just be immersed in mud, but a decades-old tradition that unites the entire campus – including University presidents. So, remember to grab an old T-shirt and some gym shorts before heading off to ONU, because that’s all you’ll really need to fit into our Polar Bear family. Then, all of a sudden, you’ll know you belong here.

YOU GET WHAT YOU GIVE When Henry Solomon Lehr founded ONU in 1871, he envisioned a university whose graduates would take their skills and knowledge out into the world to serve the greater society. Today, almost 150 years later, service is still an important part of who we are at ONU. While we want our students to make significant contributions to their professions, we also encourage them to actively strive to make their communities better places, to be able to recognize and willingly act on community issues. We want ONU students to be not just scholars, but citizen scholars.

At ONU, I have served food at soup kitchens, visited local nursing homes, and helped out at the humane society. While it was important to find a school that would give me great academic and professional opportunities, ONU also has provided experiences for me to grow and develop my character. For that, I will always be grateful. – Shelby Core, senior political science major from Spencerville, Ohio

AT ONU, WE HAVE STUDENT-ATHLETES, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. At ONU, we have a long-standing history of academic excellence. It’s something you’ll see throughout campus, including on the court, field, track or pitch. Our studentathletes are known for achieving success both in and out of the classroom. Here, expectations are shattered, ordinary is surpassed, and records are broken.

Winning the Elite 89 has become a tradition at ONU, with Lovejoy bringing the fourth award back to our campus trophy case. It’s a testament to our studentathletes’ resolve and to what can be reached when nothing gets in the way.

Take, for example, Academic All-American Wrestler Cody Lovejoy, who was named the 2014 NCAA Division III Wrestling Elite 89 Award winner at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships. With this victory, Lovejoy became wrestling’s first repeat winner of the prestigious award, given annually to the student-athlete with the highest grade point average at each of the NCAA’s 89 championship events. He also won in 2013.

BEING IN A SM ALL TOW N DOE SN’T ME AN YOU C A N ’ T H AV E A —

ONU graduates have gone on to become Fulbright scholars, Oscar-winner and U.S. senators.

Since 1941, every NFL Super Bowl football has been made in Ada, Ohio.

Glenn Smith, a graduate from ONU with a BS in mechanical engineering, worked on NASA’s Apollo missions.

ADA , OHIO HAS 5,900 PEOPLE, A HANDFUL OF STOP SIGNS AND A W E A LT H O F S U C C E S S S T O R I E S . This seemingly small town has produced plenty of big things—and ONU is the engine fueling it. It’s more than our nationally ranked programs in all of our five colleges or the recognition we receive for teaching quality and high graduation rates. It’s about producing graduates who surpass the status quo.

In 1910, President Taft visited Ada to give the commencement address at Ohio Northern University.

One turned manufacturing pet food into a billion dollar business. Another found his way into the homes and hearts of millions when he directed the Oscar-winning film Up. Our graduates don’t strive for the ordinary because they don’t pursue an ordinary education. At ONU, it’s more than a four-year commitment; it’s a 40year outlook. And the work you put in while you’re here will continue paying dividends along the way.
