Hello ONU alumni and friends! We have had a very busy summer, from summer orientations for prospective students to summer school for current students. Interspersed between these activities were numerous camps, programs and much progress on a variety of University matters.

Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Juliet (Harvey) Hurtig, BSEE ’91 Vice President for Enrollment Management Lawrence T. Lesick

Many of you may remember from our regional alumni visits this past year that Northern is stepping up our commitment to bring the resources of the campus to the surrounding communities. This summer, my wife, Chris, in her volunteer role as director of community relations, continued to plan for a two-day health summit, which will focus on the “Human Cost of Not Eating Healthy.” The target audiences for the summit are leaders in education, health care and faith-based organizations; school boards; and elected officials in Allen County.

Phone: 419-772-2000 Fax: 419-772-2932 OHIO NORTHERN UNIVERSITY was founded in 1871 and is a private, co-educational, studentcentered institution of higher learning that offers quality, nationally ranked sciences, arts and professional programs in its five colleges: Arts & Sciences, Business Administration, Engineering, Pharmacy and Law.

In addition, student affairs staff members were busy identifying sites for service projects in conjunction with Ada Civic Engagement (ACE) Day, a relatively new activity of Fall Orientation for new students. ACE Day seeks to involve new students in service to others right from the start of their ONU experience. This year, more than 300 students, faculty and staff participated in ACE Day. With the University’s sesquicentennial in the year 2021 less than a decade away, we are excited about beginning the process to develop a comprehensive master plan to guide campus growth and development in the future. This summer, the University engaged a Toledo firm, The Collaborative Inc. (TCI), to be our partner and begin that effort. TCI has extensive master planning experience. We are looking forward to working with them on this important initiative related to improving physical and capital resources of the University. The master plan will include consideration of both academic and non-academic facilities and needs. Fortunately, one of the athletic needs will be completed even before master planning begins. This summer, due to the generosity of several ONU trustees and alumni, the University received donations that will enable us to install artificial turf and lights on the football field as well on the infield of the outdoor track to create a new soccer field. As a result, the University can now add lacrosse to its sports offerings. These improvements will give ONU one of the best field turf complexes in the region and will enable us to host high school playoff games in football. On Aug. 3, we convened the Executive Committee of the University’s Board of Trustees for its annual summer meeting. I was pleased to update them on a number of ways we are advancing the University as we implement our recently approved strategic plan: ONU 2021. In addition, we formally announced a new major in risk management and insurance, which will be offered by the Dicke College of Business Administration in 2014, and the addition of men and women’s lacrosse for the spring 2015 season. I am pleased to share these summer happenings with you because they convey the vibrancy of our great University. I look forward to keeping you informed about Northern. As always, I also welcome your thoughts and comments, and Chris and I, again, look forward to seeing many of you throughout the year, both at Homecoming and campus events and at alumni events throughout the country. Together, we can keep ONU strong, moving forward and a very special place for our students.

Dan DiBiasio President

Hello alumni and friends! With the start of a new academic year, I feel as though this whole summer has been full of fresh starts. As many of you have already read in Northern Express, I have been selected as the new director of alumni relations for Ohio Northern University. I am pleased and honored to assume the role that both Bill Robinson and Ann Donnelly Hamilton have been committed to so very faithfully for the last 30 years. Both Bill and Ann are true mentors to me, and I will continue to look to them for guidance and advice as I help propel the alumni office forward. While I know a number of you, I would like to share a bit about my background. I am a 2005 graduate of Ohio Northern with a degree in mechanical engineering, and I have worked for Ohio Northern since 2008. I started at ONU as the development director for the College of Engineering and have served the alumni office as an associate director for the past three years. While it might seem like an odd career path for an engineer, I could not be more thrilled to be where I am today. I am so thankful for the knowledge I gained as an engineering student here and, truthfully, use my problem-solving skills on a daily basis. Just as you all know, a Northern education truly prepares you for anything! I also began a new adventure with a wonderful man, Chad Hays, BSBA ’99, this summer. We were married on July 20, and it was so wonderful celebrating our new life together with family, friends and many fellow Polar Bears. It’s also time to begin a new ONU calendar! This year, we feature not only our favorite campus spots, but also our Alumni Association board members. Our Alumni Association board members are serving as your regional captains for Polar Bear Nation Regional Challenge! Many of you have received emails from Klondike as he travels the country promoting giving to The Northern Fund. Remember, it’s not the amount you donate; it’s your participation that truly counts! Please be sure to check our 2013-14 alumni event schedule at onualumni. com. We are visiting from coast to coast in the hopes of bringing a bit of Northern to you. I hope to see lots of alumni Polar Bears at Homecoming on Oct. 18-20 when we celebrate the reunion classes of ’63, ’68, ’73, ’78, ’83, ’88, ’93, ’98, ’03, ’08! I look forward to leading the alumni efforts of our wonderful alma mater. I hope to see you all at an event near you and would love to see you when you come back to Ada! Go Bears!

As part of Move-In Weekend on Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, 600 members of Northern’s incoming class assembled on the Tundra to form the giant letters ONU. The brainstorm of Dan DiBiasio, ONU president, this unique photographic moment will hopefully become an annual tradition. Another annual tradition is the University’s calendar, which, this year, features the favorite on-campus locations of members of ONU’s Alumni Board. We hope you’ll take a few moments to page through the calendar, which will allow you to get to know the board members a bit better and, perhaps, spark a few memories of your own! Congratulations Miss Minnesota!

Congratulations to Ohio Northern University’s Rebecca Yeh, a third-year pharmacy student from Nisswa, Minn., who finished as fourth runner-up in the 2014 Miss America pageant in Atlantic City, N.J., in September. Earlier in the competition, Yeh took top honors – and a $2,000 scholarship – in the pageant’s talent portion with a performance on the violin. No stranger to the instrument, Yeh has been a self-employed violin instructor since the age of 13 and performs regularly as a soloist, as a member of a string trio, and occasionally as part of a string quartet. Yeh was crowned Miss Minnesota 2013 on June 15. Her service platform is “A Voice for Autism,” which was inspired by her 22-year-old brother, Phil, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of 4. She speaks and educates people about early detection and public awareness of this disorder, and she also is the official spokesperson for Children’s Miracle Network and the work they do in Minnesota.

ONU to install artificial turf Ohio Northern University’s Dial-Roberson Stadium and the infield of the track complex, located adjacent to the football facility, will both receive artificial turf for the upcoming 2013-14 season. “The addition of turf at Ohio Northern University will help strengthen and add greater facility depth and flexibility to our athletic programs as well as provide more opportunities for all of our students,” says Daniel A. DiBiasio, president of Ohio Northern University. “Ohio Northern’s athletic programs are a regional and national power, and with this addition we will be able to enhance soccer, football, and track and field.” Construction on the fields and resurfacing of the outdoor track began in August. Funding has come from a few key leadership contributions from Ohio Northern trustees and alumni donors. The installation of lights will be added in the future, which can lead to the possibility of hosting high school football playoff games and additional athletic and non-athletic events. Pending construction schedules and weather conditions, Ohio Northern anticipates the new turf fields will be dedicated on Oct. 5, when the new field at Dial-Roberson Stadium will be named for William “Bill” Robinson, BSEd ’61, ACIT ’71, ACIT ’89, Hon. D. ’05, H of F ’05, who is retiring after more than 50 years of service to ONU.

Until completion, the soccer teams will continue to play at the ONU Soccer Field. The Polar Bears will host top-ranked Mount Union on Oct. 5 at 1:30 p.m. Follow the progress of the new artificial turf field at Dial-Roberson Stadium at www.onu.edu/turfcam

Polar Parent Programming: Northern Responds should be finished by Easter 2015. McCurdy said rebuilding on the church’s old site is important to the community for historic and emotional reasons. RCM Architects of Findlay designed the new church, which features many windows surrounding a roughly 1,000-square-foot foyer. Services will continue to be held in the English Chapel at Ohio Northern University until construction is complete. Donations to help complete the work of the church’s building and mission goals are being accepted at Liberty National Bank in Ada. To learn more, visit adaumc.org “ONU parents have energy and enthusiasm, and their engagement with ONU is really exciting!” says Karen (Casper) Condeni, BA ’74, ACIT ’12. Formerly the vice president of enrollment, Condeni has stayed connected with her alma mater through the launching of a more definitive Parent Programming effort. “I have four generations of family that attended ONU, including two of my children. This is a special university that makes life-changing differences for students. Tapping into the time and talent of ONU parents has taken a special coordinated effort, and it has involved several offices on campus. We have been pleased with the interest, involvement and progress thus far. The potential for further development is most promising.” A campus working group involving staff from academic affairs, student affairs, alumni, marketing, enrollment and advancement was organized. As a result, a revamped Parents and Family website was set up, a Parent Advisory Council was formed, and an online Parent Newsletter was established. Regular features in the newsletter include trends that impact college parents as well as “Polar Parent Pride,” whereby current parents can share their good news about ONU.
