As an American Chemical Society-accredited chemistry program, students can perform many hours of research in all five areas of chemistry (organic, inorganic, biochemical, physical and analytical). There are two professors in each of the five sub-disciplines and a third in inorganic chemistry. This also allows each professor to concentrate on his or her field of expertise. The Arts at Northern Ohio Northern was named as one of the country’s top 200 creative programs in Creative Colleges: A Guide for Student Actors, Artists, Dancers, Musicians and Writers. The performing arts include theatre, musical theatre, music, international theatre production and dance (minor). The Freed Center for the Performing Arts • More than 100 annual events and performances, including headliners, theatre, dance and music events. • Each season brings 30-40 professional guest artists to campus • A unique International Play Festival, international tours, a professional series, a children series, an educational series and outreach activities The Art and Design program Four major programs, including advertising design, art education, graphic design and studio arts, are offered in a professional and liberal arts environment that contributes to student exposure to form, theory and practices. • Required of all majors, a year-long investigative research project synthesizes a student’s liberal arts and professional education and culminates in a public presentation demonstrating knowledge of concepts, theories, issues, form, methods and materials. • An in-house design studio and course offers real-world exposure to business and professional experiences. The University exhibition venues include two galleries on campus. At ONU there are abundant opportunities for many kinds of experiential learning!

Jonathan Syrigos, a junior chemistry major, applied for a three-month chemistry internship with AB Mauri, a division of Associated British Foods, in Sydney, Australia. The firm is one of the world’s largest producers and distributors of yeast and bakery ingredients in the world.

Internships and Study Abroad Sydney Kuhlman, a musical theater and international theatre production major, traveled across the ocean for a two-month opportunity to stage-manage for the theatre at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology in New Zealand. Evan Roberts, a communication arts major, utilized his public relations expertise to help “build brands” with Liggett Stashower in Cleveland, Ohio, an advertising and public relations firm that focuses on brand-building for clients, especially in the building products industry. Some of Liggett’s clients include Glidden™ paint, Duck® brand duct tape and Freshaire Choice™. Chelsea Mack and Travis Edington representing The James F. Dicke College of Business Administration, along with six other ONU students and a professor, participated in the Hanyang University Summer Program Fellowship for four weeks of study and travel in South Korea and China.


Leadership opportunities Michael Storey, a sixth-year pharmacy student, is serving as a member of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Policy and Legislative Affairs Advisory Group. The group is comprised of 10 students from all over the country with the purpose of mediating between students and the ASHP on various policy issues. “The main focus of our group is to get students involved in the health care legislative process.�

Co-op program Eric Holbrook, mechanical engineering major, did a six-month assignment with Caltech/NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., where he worked in the Planetary Sample Acquisition and Handling Group. His main focus was the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), the next Mars rover that is scheduled for launch in 2011.
