But the truth is this: There are many factors involved, and it’s wise for families to get all the facts before making a decision that can impact their student’s future. With knowledge about the real cost of the education and the return on that investment, students can fulfill their dreams without the burden of unmanageable debt.
Consider these five facts about an ONU education:
1. Ohio Northern University invests in the success of its students by offering more than $58 million in gift
assistance annually.
2. After only six months, Ohio Northern’s 2011 graduates have an overall placement rate of 94 percent for jobs and graduate school.
3. The average starting salaries for our graduates: Arts & Sciences: $33,592 Business: $38,301 Engineering: $55,982 Pharmacy: $108,886 (Source: 2011 Graduating Class Reports)
4. Ohio Northern University’s graduates repay their loans at a remarkable 99 percent rate, meaning that only 1 percent has defaulted. The national default rate is more than 8 percent.
5. Ohio Northern’s “return on investment,” or ROI, as calculated by a 2012 PayScale study places ONU’s
graduates and their earning power in the top 21 percent nationally and among the top six schools in Ohio. This ROI analysis is significant evidence that ONU graduates fare better than most in terms of earnings over time.
ONU’s professional financial aid staff offers an individualized approach to financial aid counseling, with a goal of making a Northern education possible while keeping students informed about their investment.
Scholarships and Awards
All scholarship amounts listed below are annual, renewable awards.
Academic Scholarships Academic scholarships are awarded automatically to those who have applied and been accepted for admission to the University as a full-time student. Most merit-based scholarships fall into one of the three categories immediately below, however other awards may be available based on demonstrated talent, leadership or other criteria.
Presidential Scholarship $20,000 - $22,000 renewable
Colleges of Arts & Sciences, Business Administration and Engineering eligibility criteria: ACT ≥ 30 or SAT ≥ 1330 and GPA ≥ 3.5 College of Pharmacy eligibility criteria: ACT ≥ 31 or SAT ≥ 1360 and GPA ≥ 3.8
Trustee Scholarship $17,000 - $19,000 renewable
Colleges of Arts & Sciences, Business Administration and Engineering eligibility criteria: ACT ≥ 27 or SAT ≥ 1210 and GPA ≥ 3.5 College of Pharmacy eligibility criteria: ACT ≥ 29 or SAT ≥ 1290 and GPA ≥ 3.7
Academic Achievement Award $14,000 - $16,000 renewable
Colleges of Arts & Sciences, Business Administration and Engineering eligibility criteria: ACT ≥ 24 or SAT ≥ 1090 and GPA ≥ 3.3 College of Pharmacy eligibility criteria: ACT ≥ 27 or SAT ≥ 1210 and GPA ≥ 3.5
Other Merit-Based Awards Mathile Scholarship $32,000
Accepted students who qualify for the Presidential Scholarship will be considered for these special leadership awards. A selection committee will determine the finalists who will be invited for an on-campus evaluation. Based on the on-campus evaluations, the Mathile Family Foundation will support two $32,000 renewable scholarships. The Mathile Scholarship will replace all other ONU awards.
Award amounts and award criteria are subject to change.
Dimension Award Ranging from $1,000 to $10,000
Ohio Northern University is committed to recruiting students from all segments of society and supporting their retention to graduation. The purpose of the Dimension Award is to offer financial assistance to incoming freshmen and transfers who are from underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds. Award amounts are based on academic credentials.
Talent Award Starting at $4,000
Talent awards are available to students who major in advertising design, art education, graphic design, musical theatre, studio arts, theatre and dance (offered as a minor), or students who are accepted as a major in the Departments of English or Music. An audition, portfolio review and/or interview is required for talent award consideration in all these programs. Talent awards are coordinated with other University grants and scholarships. Orchestral scholarships for non-music majors also are available.
Business Leadership Scholarship Starting at $3,000
This award is designed to recognize and financially assist students admitted to the College of Business Administration who exhibit exemplary leadership experience. To be considered, the accepted student should have (at minimum): 23 ACT (1050 SAT), 3.0 GPA, and demonstrated exemplary leadership. The Business Leadership Scholarship may be combined with other academic scholarships for those who qualify.
Alumni Award Starting at $3,000
A gift award available to the dependent sons and daughters of ONU graduates.
Out-of-State Recognition Award Starting at $2,000
All accepted new students who reside outside of Ohio are automatically considered for this award. It has been designed to recognize and financially assist students who contribute to Ohio Northern’s goal of a national student body.

Global Internships Cherryl Zekeng, a fifth year pharmacy student, interned with the World Health Organization in Ghana. Zekeng plans to follow up her pharmacy degree with further study in health economics or public health.
Abundant opportunities exist for students at Northern – from research opportunities, valuable international and domestic internships to global study. The experiential learning extends beyond the classroom.
International Experiences Students from all majors have the opportunity to study or work abroad. ONU is affiliated with programs in 40 countries, representing every region of the world. Four ONU teacher education majors, four area teachers and six professors spent four weeks as participants in a Fulbright-Hays Group Area Study in South Africa during July and August 2010. The goal of the experience was to study democratization in an emerging democracy so as to better understand our own democracy. Participants created units and modules of curriculum for use and dissemination in the U.S.
The internship allowed her to explore five areas: non-communicable diseases and WHO’s role in preventing them; immunization and children; malaria and the new WHO “Roll Back Malaria” program; essential medicine; and sanitation and poverty.
Capstones All Ohio Northern students complete a capstone, integrating all the knowledge and skills they have gained into one final project. In the James F. Dicke College of Business Administration, each capstone team tackles a real project for a real client. Steve Dulisse, a senior marketing major from Danbury, Conn., spent months immersed in a team project to help supercenter giant Meijer maximize its market share on college campuses.
A Glimpse at the Workplace Many ONU students complete an internship or co-op, giving them first-hand knowledge of what their future career will be like. Students gain experience with nationally recognized organizations, such as: -Armed Forces DNA Identification Labs -CIA -Cincinnati Reds -Deneb Robotics -Disney World -Eli Lilly -NASA’s Glenn Research Center -TEVA Pharmaceuticals -Rolls Royce, and many more!
Northern Without Borders What began as a routine medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic is now a campus-wide movement to connect ONU students with service opportunities around the globe. This year, the group returns to the Dominican Republic to organize medical clinics, engineering projects, education projects and much more.
The Hanyang University International Summer Program Seoul, South Korea Each year, two students from each of ONU’s undergraduate colleges are selected to participate in the Hanyang University International Summer Program in Seoul, South Korea. The program includes five weeks of study: four weeks in Seoul, South Korea and one week in China. Students choose from a wide variety of courses, including business, international relations, engineering, science, humanities, arts and literature.

Metzger Nature Center ONU’s Metzger Nature Center in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, serves as a field station for the biological sciences, offering opportunities for long-term research, specialized classes or indepth observations.

The University’s Wetlands Restoration Project is located at the Tidd Farm 12 miles from campus. The project’s nearly 300 acres are being returned to its original habitat (muckland, wetlands, fields and woodlots), which provides long-term study areas in the till plains of glaciated northwest Ohio.
Evidence of Excellence Ranked No. 25 in the nation among baccalaureate colleges in Washington Monthly’s College Rankings. For eight consecutive years, Ohio Northern has been ranked among the top five baccalaureate schools in the Midwest in U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best Colleges.
