Costs? Scholarships? Debt? Affordability? These days, the news is all about skyrocketing student debt. But the truth is this: There are many factors involved, and it’s wise for families to get all the facts before making a decision that can impact their student’s future. With knowledge about the real cost of the education and the return on that investment, students can fulfill their dreams without the burden of unmanageable debt.

Consider these five facts about an ONU education:

1. Ohio Northern University invests in the success of its students by offering more than $58 million in gift assistance annually.

2. After only six months, Ohio Northern’s 2012 graduates have an overall placement rate of 92 percent for jobs and graduate school.

3. Ohio Northern University’s graduates repay their loans at a remarkable 99 percent rate, meaning that only 1 percent has defaulted. The national default rate is more than 8 percent.

4. Ohio Northern’s “return on investment,” or ROI, as calculated by a 2012 PayScale study places ONU’s graduates and their earning power in the top 21 percent nationally and among the top six schools in Ohio. This ROI analysis is significant evidence that ONU graduates fare better than most in terms of earnings over time.

5. Ohio Northern is ranked third among schools in Ohio for its students’ greatest

lifetime return on investment (ROI) according to a “Affordable College Online: Highest Return on Investment Colleges in Ohio” ranking.

ONU’s professional financial aid staff offers an individualized approach to financial aid counseling, with a goal of making a Northern education possible while keeping students informed about their investment.

THE OHIO NORTHERN PROMISE

Our Mission: Your Academic Success. Beginning with the 2014-15 academic year, we are introducing The Ohio Northern Promise, a significant commitment by ONU to improve the affordability of higher education for more families across the country.

The Ohio Northern Promise has four key components: 1. 20-25 percent reduction in tuition rates (based on 2013-14 rates) 2. A four-year graduation guarantee* 3. Hands-on high-impact learning, such as internships, capstone courses, field experiences, study

abroad, experiential learning and service learning. 4. Consistent job placement and graduate and professional school admissions rates for graduates –our graduates have an average placement rate of 93 percent since 2006.

“In addition to giving us great professors and a really excellent education, Ohio Northern gave us outstanding opportunities for leadership.”

AN EXPERIENCE TO Carla Bender Kim, BS ’97 Principal investigator Children’s Hospital Boston

Ohio Northern has more than living alumni, many of whom are engaged in the life of

30,000

their alma mater today. They mentor, coach, teach, donate and reunite to renew friendships and reconnect with the University community.

“I credit ONU for many wonderful relationships in my life and an incredible education.” -Paul Carbetta II, BSBA ’90

“In the course of six years while earning my PharmD, I developed as a student, as a leader, and as a professional.” -Mehgan Davlin, PharmD ’09 Division director, Ambulatory and Care Transitions, Department of Pharmacy at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

REMEMBER Bob Peterson, BSME ’83 Academy Award-winning director and animator, Pixar Animation Studios, Finding Nemo, Monsters, Inc., Up, Toy Story “When I came to ONU, I was a young kid looking through the window at the world. ONU opened that window to experience and knowledge. They cultivated me as a whole person. I was an engineering student by day and a cartoonist for the school newspaper at night.”

OPPORTU NI

LEARNING FOR BEGINNERS I went to teach at Sakae Institute of Study Abroad and ended up learning 10 times more than I could ever teach. I expected to learn some big things, like how to roll sushi or how to make an origami crane, but it’s the little things that take you by surprise. Going into my senior year, I was excited to accept my fancy piece of paper and move on with my life. However, working with these students made me passionate about learning again. Sakae helped to remind me why I chose Ohio Northern as well as how I came to fall in love with the English language.

Ohio Northern gives you the opportunity to see the world from different perspectives.

Northern Without Borders

C-SPAN

What began as a routine medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic is now a campus-wide movement to connect ONU students with service opportunities around the globe. This year, the group returns to the Dominican Republic to organize medical clinics, engineering projects, education projects and much more.

The C-SPAN Campaign 2012 Bus stopped at Ohio Northern University as part of its “Road to the White House tour. Individuals were encouraged to explore the state-of-the-art C-SPAN bus, which featured an interactive, educational experience with the goal of providing resources to enhance thought and discussion of government and public affairs.

ITIES of A LIFETIME REAL CLIENTS, REAL PROJECTS Students complete a senior capstone project, integrating all the knowledge and skills they have gained into one final project. In the James F. Dicke College of Business Administration, each capstone team tackles a real project for a real client, such as the Meijer Business Challenge.

High-Impact Practices Instilling our students with a passion for learning happens every day inside our small, intimate classrooms. But it goes beyond that; we also believe in engaging and empowering our students through an abundance of experiential learning opportunities that happen outside the classroom. We like to refer to it as high-impact learning – where students have the chance to roll up their sleeves, apply the knowledge they’ve gained, and actually solve challenges and develop solutions in a hands-on environment. It’s our hands-on “experiential learning” philosophy, and we build it into every academic program at Ohio Northern University.
