During the past four years, Bethany Schreck was everywhere on campus, including the cozy confines of a certain polar bear costume. “I have friends who go to big state universities, and they ask, ‘How in the world are you your school’s mascot?’ I say, ‘At Northern, I get a chance to be my school’s mascot.’” At Northern, Schreck specialized in clubs and activities. “My hobby is socializing. I just love meeting people and getting to know them. Northern really encourages this confidence: being able to greet people and talk about who you are and what you love doing.” Schreck also became heavily involved with President’s Club, a group of students who assist the University president and the Office of Alumni Affairs with events that involve friends and alumni of the University. It was established to help create strong relationships between ONU’s best and brightest students and the dedicated alumni who continuously support ONU’s endeavors. “President’s Club was a blast. I got to drive John Glenn in a golf cart! Who gets to do that? I did!”

Sometimes, it only takes one conversation, a single encounter, to change an entire outlook. Eric Schultz enrolled at Ohio Northern University with his eyes on a career as a veterinarian. But then a single lecture changed these lifelong plans – for the better. “I always thought I wanted to be a veterinarian, but now I’m studying plant biology.” It sounds funny, but it’s true. Because even the longest held plans can be changed in an instant. As part of his pre-veterinary medicine program, Schultz was required to take a course in botany. This seemingly innocuous mandatory class became a turning point. “I remember one class with professor Robert Verb very clearly. After that lecture, everything I thought that I wanted just didn’t matter anymore. It was about gymnosperms and cycads. Something about those two just clicked. I felt a switch turn, and I was on a new path. The new path was plant biology.”

I’ve been successful here at ONU because of my drive to get involved and put myself out there. Kendra Hearn, BSBA ’11 Warren, Ohio Majors: Pharmaceutical business and management The next chapter: A position with Cardinal Health To say that Kendra Hearn merely “got involved” is definitely an understatement. She was captain of ONU’s varsity cheerleaders, secretary of multicultural affairs in Student Senate, and president of the Zeta Phi Chapter of Sigma Iota Epsilon. She was a member of the Gospel Ensemble, the Black Student Union, the Muslim Student Association, Omicron Delta Kappa, President’s Club, Ultimate Faith Outreach, the Society for the Advancement of Management, Alpha Lambda Delta, Habitat for Humanity, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She even served as a student representative on the Presidential Selection Committee. It was all part of her plan to make the most of her college years. “You get in, you get involved, you join organizations, and you keep yourself open. Ohio Northern makes it really easy to meet new people and be involved and stay involved.” With so many activities and obligations, Hearn needed to develop a system to keep things straight. “Being involved in a lot of organizations can be taxing at times. My planner helped me out a lot!”

Once I got involved with campus organizations, I found out who I was as a person, and definitely as a leader.” Austin Moyer, BSME ’11 New Washington, Ohio Major: Mechanical engineering The next chapter: A position with Polaris Industries Most people try to avoid bumps in the road, but for Austin Moyer, rough terrain was just what he needed to land his dream job. Moyer credits his four years with ONU’s highly successful Baja SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) team for his new position at Polaris Industries, a company that designs, engineers, manufactures and markets vehicles such as snowmobiles, ATVs and motorcycles. “Baja is the reason I got my job. Four years of design, teamwork and leadership – that’s what Polaris wants to see from students,” he says. “If I didn’t do Baja, there is no way I would have ever been given this opportunity.” The Baja SAE competition strives to simulate real-world engineering design projects by challenging teams to build off-road vehicles that can withstand rough terrain or water. Moyer’s participation in ONU’s Baja SAE team began his freshman year, and it soon became an important part of his college life. By his second year on the team, Moyer found himself in charge of the suspension steering design – something that may never have happened at another school. “At most schools, it’s not until the junior or senior year that students get to actually work on the Baja car,” he says. “That’s something unique about Northern: you have the opportunity to get involved right away.”

Michael Schultz knew exactly what he wanted to do with his life, and he knew exactly which university could set his plans in motion. “I knew I wanted to go into pharmacy, and I really liked ONU’s 0-6 program, so that narrowed it down to a fairly limited number of schools in the country. I also knew that I wanted to be a part of a swim team and to be a part of Division III athletics, so Ohio Northern was pretty much set for me right from the get go.” The only remaining question was affordability. “School in general is expensive; it doesn’t matter where you go. I knew I had to apply for grants and scholarships. I spent the weekends of my junior and senior years in high school filling out all the applications.” “It worked out pretty well for me because I ended up getting quite a few scholarships. I got through four years of school here without having to take out any student loans. My parents love that!”

The Hanyang University International Summer Program in Seoul, South Korea Fellowships are selected from a pool of applicants from each college and awarded to two students from each ONU undergraduate college. The program includes five weeks of study: four weeks in Seoul, South Korea, and one week in China. There are a wide variety of academic courses to choose from (business, international relations, engineering, science, humanities, arts, literature, etc.). Courses are conducted in English, and courses in the Korean Language and Cultural Studies also are available. 16

Northern Without Borders What began as a routine medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic is now a campus-wide movement to connect ONU students with service opportunities around the globe. This new student organization, Northern Without Borders, adds a distinctly international feel to Northern’s nearly 200 other student organizations. This year, the group returns to the Dominican Republic to organize medical clinics, engineering projects, education projects and much more.
[Truly] Global Opportunities Teaching abroad
Four ONU teacher education majors, four area teachers and six professors spent four weeks as participants in a Fulbright-Hays Group Area Study in South Africa during July and August 2010. The goal of the experience was to study democratization in an emerging democracy so as to better understand our own democracy. Participants created units and modules of curriculum for use and dissemination in the U.S.

Kelly Morman, BA ’11 Political science Monroeville, Ohio Internship in Washington, D.C., with the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) During her time in D.C., Morman worked with the education policy office, which exclusively addresses education issues.
Offsite research and classroom study
Metzger Nature Center/Tidwell Farm ONU’s Metzger Nature Center in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, serves as a field station for the biological sciences, offering the opportunity for longterm research, several days of classes or in-depth observations. Classes that have used the Metzger Nature Center: • Natural history • Ichthyology • Ornithology • Animal behavior • Entomology • Science education • Specialized weekend classes in various social science areas
Morman will train in Cleveland, Miss., to become a corps member of Teach For America. Following this five-week experience, she will begin a two-year commitment to teach Spanish at a secondary school in Arkansas or Mississippi. Cherryl Zekeng Fifth-year pharmacy student Accra, Ghana Internship with the World Health Organization in Ghana Zekeng plans to follow up her pharmacy degree with further study in health economics or public health. Her internship allowed her to explore five areas: non-communicable diseases and WHO’s role in preventing them; immunization and children; malaria and the new WHO “Roll Back Malaria” program; essential medicine; and sanitation and poverty.
Research
Goldwater Scholars Two Ohio Northern University students, Mitchell Thayer, a senior chemistry and physics major (with minors in astronomy and applied mathematics) from Painesville, Ohio, and Nathaniel Mabe, a third-year pharmacy and German major from Ashville, Ohio, were selected as Goldwater Scholars by the trustees of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. This marks the seventh consecutive year that Ohio Northern students have received this honor, the premier undergraduate award of its type in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.

Co-curricular groups at ONU that make regular use of the property: • The ONU Archaeology Field School, which conducts archaeological “digs” during May and June • The Outdoors Club • Joint Engineering Council • Biological and allied health sciences faculty • Student Senate • Student affairs staff • Members of the University chapel groups The property serves as an active arboretum because of the variety and the maturity of the trees. The western Appalachian location of the center provides vegetation and topography that are a dramatic contrast to the glaciated region near the University’s main campus. In addition, the University’s Wetlands Restoration Project is located 12 miles from campus. The project’s nearly 300 acres are being returned to their original habitat (muckland, wetlands, fields and woodlots), which provides long-term study areas in the till plains of glaciated northwest Ohio.

ONU Sports NCAA Division III Athletics At Northern, athletics and academics go hand in hand – excellence is the standard for both. Varsity athletes compete as members of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). This year, 32 individuals earned Academic All-OAC honors.
Intramural and Club Sports 70 percent of ONU students participate in intramural and club sports.

Athletes Luke Miller, BSCE ’11, and Chelsea Albert, BSBA ’11, received the prestigious 2010-11 Clyde Lamb Award. Criteria for the award include at least two years participation in an Ohio Athletic Conferencesponsored sport, senior status, a minimum grade point average of 3.00 and sportsmanlike conduct in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete and his/her institution. Miller, a wrestler, was a three-time All-American, won the 2010 national title at 157 pounds, and finished in third place with a 4-1 record in the 165-pound weight class at the 2011 NCAA Division III Championships. He was named a Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association three times in his career. Albert, a midfielder on the ONU women’s soccer team, was named Third Team All-America by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America this year. She is the first All-American in Ohio Northern women’s soccer history. She also was selected First Team All-OAC, Academic All-OAC, ESPN Academic All-District IV and NSCAA First Team All-Great Lakes region.

Academic Scholarships Academic scholarships are awarded automatically to those who have applied and been accepted for admission to the University as a full-time student. Most academic merit-based scholarships fall into one of the three categories listed immediately below. Talent awards are available to students who major in advertising design, art education, graphic design, international theatre production, musical theatre, studio arts, theatre and dance (offered as a minor), or students who are accepted as a major in the Departments of English or Music. An audition, portfolio review and/or interview is required for talent award consideration in all these programs. Talent awards are coordinated with other University grants and scholarships. Accepted students who qualify for the Presidential Scholarship will be considered for these special leadership awards. A selection committee will determine the finalists who will be invited for an on-campus evaluation. Based on the on-campus evaluations, the Mathile Family Foundation will support two $32,000 renewable scholarships. The Mathile Scholarship will replace all other ONU scholarships.
Out-of-State Recognition Award Starting at $2,000
All accepted new students who reside outside of Ohio are automatically considered for this award. It has been designed to recognize and financially assist students who contribute to Ohio Northern’s goal of a national student body.
Dimension Award Starting at $5,000

Campus: Situated on nearly 342 acres in the small town of Ada in northwest Ohio, ONU is located within 90 minutes of several major cities.
