Sheila Willamowski, a dual major in political science and criminal justice from Lima, Ohio, spent the quarter as an intern in the office of U.S. House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio). “The internship with Boehner was especially interesting since he has been in the public’s eye so much recently with the passing of the health care legislation,” she said. As a Congressional intern, Willamowski had access to portions of the Capitol that tourists never see. “With my Cap-ID card, I was granted access to ‘Dome tours’ where I was able to climb up to the top of the Capitol building overlooking the National Mall, which is usually reserved for only the high members of Congress and their guests,” she said. Willamowski also had a few unique experiences such as serendipitously passing Vice President Joe Biden in the hall, being on the House Floor for the historic vote on the health care bill, escorting the governor of the People’s Bank of China to a luncheon, and working at the Republican National Committee and National Republican Congressional Committee Headquarters.

Valuable Internships and Co-ops Eric Holbrook, a mechanical engineering major, did a six-month assignment with Caltech/NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., where he worked in the Planetary Sample Acquisition and Handling Group. His main focus was the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), the next Mars rover that is scheduled for launch in 2011.

Sydney Kuhlman, a musical theater and international theater production major, traveled across the ocean for a twomonth opportunity to stage-manage for the theater at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology in New Zealand.

Jonathan Syrigos, a junior chemistry major, had a fastpaced summer of learning and living in an entirely new culture. Syrigos was selected to be a research intern at AB Mauri, an international firm and division of Associated British Foods. Syrigos was placed in its Sydney, Australia, plant to monitor the making of yeast.

Evan Roberts, a communication arts major, utilized his public relations expertise to help “build brands” with Liggett Stashower in Cleveland, Ohio, an advertising and public relations firm that focuses on brand-building for clients, especially in the building products industry. Some of Liggett’s clients include Glidden™ paint, Duck® brand duct tape and Freshaire Choice™.

Syrigos’ project focused on improving the accuracy of sugar tests and initiating the operation of the LECO machine. As an intern, Syrigos was expected to understand the company protocols and navigate the hierarchy of the organization to receive approval or information. This was an invaluable real world lesson. To fulfill his role, Syrigos utilized his background in chemistry, his confidence to question, and his time management skills gained from Northern. He greatly admired his work comrades and found Sydney to be a highly diverse and enriching city. Syrigos, who is also active in the Northern Christian Fellowship at ONU, joined Hillsong Church in Sydney to take part in their worship and fellowship. He met amazing friends and truly experienced the truth that, “God is going to be with me wherever I go.” ONU is of the high standards that he wanted in a college, and he is happily surprised at how much he is continually enjoying his academic career – his interests are expanded, and his core classes are challenging.

Sample Internships Apotex Pharmaceuticals, Armed Forces DNA Identification Labs, CIA, Cincinnati Reds, Columbus Zoo, Deloitte & Touche, Deneb Robotics, Department of the Interior (Bureau of Land Management), Disney World, Eli Lilly, Ernst and Young, FBI, Honda of America, KPMG, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC, Mead Corporation, NASA’s Glenn Research Center and Johnson Space Center, Ogilvy and Mather Advertising, TEVA Pharmaceuticals, Rolls Royce, United Aircraft Products, USS/ Kobe Steel Company, Washington Center Experience, and Xerox Corporation. onu.edu
