Keynote: Sonny Vaccaro

5:30 - 7:30 pm - Walter Hall

Vaccaro has played a pivotal role in the player-focused movement to reform the elite intercollegiate athletic system. His involvement with Ed O’Bannon helped set up the class action lawsuit against the NCAA involving long-term likeness and media rights issues. Vaccaro has been an active member of athletics reform groups including the Drake Group. He has been included in several books and movies about the growth of elite amateur basketball into a multi-million dollar industry. ESPN’s Lester Munson calls Vaccaro “the notorious former shoe peddler who essentially invented ‘Air Jordan’ for Nike and scored mammoth contracts with numerous universities for Nike, Addidas and Reebok before he awakened to the monster he had built and now seeks to instill some measure of reform in college sports”. Vaccaro founded the ABCD All America Camp, which grew into the elite showcase of high school basketball standouts, operating from 1984 to 2007. LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, and Sebastian Telfair were all campers. Vaccaro along with concert promoter and boyhood friend Pat DiCesare cofounded the first national high school all-star game, The Dapper Dan Roundball Classic, in Pittsburgh in 1965. The game endured for 43 years and its alumni includes such greats as Calvin Murphy, Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, Chris Webber, Alonzo Mourning, Kevin Garnett, Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady, Patrick Ewing, Rasheed Wallace and Stephon Marbury.
