The word “leader” is thrown around too often, in my opinion. Being President of the class or an organization is nice, sure, but the respect and responsibility that comes with being called a leader is something that is earned. I have been a part of many organizations and have led some myself, and the most successful ones are those where the leaders are respected. I think about leadership often and how I will carry it into my practice. I want my staff to respect me, for instance, but that will only happen if I treat them with the same respect I desire. Furthermore, I value one-onone conversations and relationships more than impressing a whole group, and I feel as though respect is gained in those personal relationships. Have you ever thought of someone you value as a leader and why that is? What is it about that person that makes him or her great? It could be your dentist mentor, a coach, parent, professor, anyone. I have seen those individuals who speak with authority and eloquence, commanding the attention of a room, and I have seen those who play a quieter role, leading more with their actions behind the scenes. Personally, I try to combine both styles: judging every situation and deciding if it is appropriate to speak up, or if I should take a quieter role and make a more personal effort. From this I have learned that being loud and trying to talk over people is not necesssarily the best way to handle conversations. Regardless of the way you go about it, a constant theme I see among those I admire as leaders is bravery. They have the courage to stand tall in the midst of adversity and the courage to try something new. As I transitioned from undergraduate to professional school, I’ve noticed leaders all around. In

college, you can tell who the leaders are because they are involved in everything on campus and always doing something. Here, I see leaders in my classmates, those who quietly go out of their way to help someone in the lab without being asked. I see leaders in the new ASDA executive board, reshaping the organization with a fresh way of running things. I see leaders in those certain professors that take the extra minute after class to help and get to know their students. I see leaders in dentists, coming to work every day and running an office or teaching dental students like us. Whichever it may be, I think we can all agree that our school is full of intelligent, caring leaders, ready to enhance an already great profession. Take a second now to think about what you bring to the table and what you still need to work on when comparing yourself to this person you admire. What do you want to bring to your practice and most importantly, to your patients? What kind of leader do you want to be?

Anything you would look back on and wish you knew while you were in dental school?

Biannually, students from The Ohio State University colleges of Dentistry, Medicine, and Pharmacy travel together to El Progreso, Honduras as a part of the PODEMOS program in an effort to help the underserved. Here is a D4 student’s account of the trip.

ly by students, using the guidance and supervision of faculty within the Ohio State’s professional colleges. While we rely on faculty to aid us in the provision of quality medical and dental care, all administrative decision making and planning is conducted by students. I was one of five dental students who, supervised by Dr. Natasha Furchtgott, the OMFS Chief Resident, joined the team of medical and pharmacy students. Careful planning was necessary before the trip to ensure we had adequate supplies and equipment to carry out our mission, which was to provide essential medical and dental services to four underserved communities in Honduras. Our clinics were set up in town centers, churches, and schools. Our specific mission was to treat infection and pain as well as prevention of disease. Due to limited resources and cargo capacity, the treatment we provided centered on the removal of

We brought all of our equipment and supplies via air travel. In addition, we dispersed hundreds of donated toothbrushes and toothpastes. Such a learning experience is unmatched by anything within the College of Dentistry. Our experience taught us how to think unconventionally when conventional treatment was out of the question. We operated out of classrooms and on covered porches with no electricity or suction amidst flies and intolerable heat. Instead of dental chairs we had lawn chairs. There was no osteomed to cut out stubborn mandibular molars, just a surgical mallet and chisel. The five of us treated over 100 patients, extracting a total of 409 teeth. Being able to work one-on-one with and learn from Dr. Furtchgott during the week was invaluable and we will carry these skills into our practice as dental students and practitioners. The six of us are confident that this outreach left these four communities happier and healthier. We are more competent clinicians for having gone on this trip and encourage any other students to look into next year’s PODEMOS trip or similar college-sanctioned missions. Dental students are currently only participating in the December PODEMOS trip, but we are hoping that will change soon so more students can take advantage of this great experience.

In Memoriam The dental community has lost a great friend, role model, and leader. ASDA Immediate Past National President, Jiwon Lee (Columbia ’14) is remembered for her quick wit, compassion, and fearless leadership. I had the privilege of working with Jiwon during the 2013-14 school year at various national leadership meetings and events. She made it a point to reach out to everyone and offer genuine advice and concern. Jiwon saw ASDA as a family and cared about each and every one of its members. She was a proud leader, a true asset to the field of dentistry, and she leaves behind a great legacy. She will be dearly missed.
