SAFETY DIRECTOR Hello Riders Well I am sure you have all got a chance to go out and ride by this time of the year and had a safe and great time. Hello Ohio Snowmobilers. The winter season is here and hopefully you have had the opportunity to put some miles on your snowmobile. This past spring, the OSSA board applied for, and was awarded a grant to purchase a tracked tractor and drag. The unit will be used primarily to groom the Western Reserve Greenway Trail. This is the largest public snowmobile trail in the state. As of this writing, we are still waiting for paper work to be signed and the actual purchases to commence. Hopefully the process will be quick and we can use the unit this winter season. The OSSA board recently met with Doug Lyons from the Ohio Department of Natural Recourses. Doug is the District Manager for the northeast district of Ohio State Parks. The conversation was about developing and expanding snowmobile trails in the Snowbelt area of the State parks. Also discussed, the possibility of leasing county property to access State Recreational Vehicle funds. This would be a great partnership between the OSSA, ODNR and local park boards, to expand snowmobile trails .We are all working toward a common goal to create more snowmobile access and recreational opportunities for the Ohio public. We look forward to the continued discussions and moving forward to gain more trails. The next big event coming up will be the annual OSSA Spring Meeting. The event will be held at the Quail Hollow Resort in Concord, Ohio. The date is Saturday April 5, 2014. The time for the general meeting is 3 pm with dinner at 5 pm. Plan on attending and hears what the OSSA have been doing and plans for the future. Also we will be announcing the scholarship winner, Snowmobiler of the Year (sorry Ken, time to surrender the plaque) business of the year as well as charity match winners. This will be the time to elect future board members. We want to see representation from all clubs, so mark your calendar now.

We just finished up our 2nd Safety Course of the year at The Ashtabula County Medical Center and we had a very good turn out of kids as well as adults. I am happy to say, all the students passed and received their safety cards. I would like to thank Paul Carpenter and Great Lakes GMC/Buick for providing lunch and beverages. I just want to take a minute to remind everyone to slow down a little so you can take in the beautiful scenery out on the trails as well as just being able to stop and be ready in case something jumps out in front of you. Make sure when riding at night, you are able to stop within the distance of your headlight beam. I have know 3 people that hit deer and totaled their snowmobile by not following that tip. Kids, make sure when you are going on a trip, to make sure your helmet, suits, gloves, etc. got packed in the trailer, don’t leave it for mom or dad to do because they have enough to worry about and pack. Don’t forget your hand signals as well as you hit the trails and most important, do not forget to be courteous to other snowmobiles but especially pedestrians, other trail users and most important, the land owners. Hopefully I will see all you great folks at the O.S.S.A. Ride-In.

Brian Kothera vice President

I am hoping all of you had a safe and happy New Years. I am writing this to you with the OSSA Ride In being just around the corner. Let’s hope Mother Nature cooperates with us again this year and brings us an abundance of the white stuff. I am gathering up all the raffle tickets that all of you have helped us sell and you did a great job again this year. The OSSA believes that this can return a great deal of money back to the clubs in accordance to what they put in to it. Last year the sled raffle returned over $2000 back to the clubs based on their sale performance. For those of you that didn’t know, there is a 20% return back to the club based on what they turn in for sales. Not a bad return considering, there is no upfront cost associated with the printing of the raffle tickets or the biggest part, the purchase. There is no worry that you have to sell a minimum amount just so you can break even. The only thing needed is for your club to ask for tickets and start selling them. For every 10 dollars your club sells you get 2 dollars back, the more you sell the more you get back.

I would also be remiss if I did not thank the wonderful Organizations, companies, and for the first time, local snowmobile clubs. These organizations all helped by donating in some way making this our biggest prize ticket yet. Thank you to Andover Bank for the donation of paying for the expense of the printing of the raffle ticket. Thank you to Mike’s Bikes & More for their donation of the Castle racing jacket, Helmet, and gloves. Thank you to North Ridge Yamaha for $250 gift certificate.

Thank you to Loudermilk Tractor & Cycle for the $200 gift certificate. Thank you to Richmond Trailer Sales for the $200 gift certificate. Thank you to Bulldog Battery for the $150 gift certificate. Thank you to our first snowmobile club, Montville Highlander Snowmobile Club that donated $150 cash. Thank you to Maple Ridge Golf Course for the $100 gift certificate. Thank you to Hemly Tool for the $100 gift certificate. Thank you to Hauser Landscaping for the $100 Gift certificate. Thank you to Barry’s Auto Repair for the $100 Gift certificate. Thank you to Great Lakes Buick for the $100 Gift certificate for auto detailing. Thank you to Grand River Trail Riders Snowmobile Club for the $100 cash prize. Thank you to Thompson Ledge Runners Snowmobile Club for the $100 cash prize. Thank you to Troy Snowmobile Association, Ltd. for the $100 cash prize. Thank you to American Powersports for the snowmobile cover. I also want to thank all those on the OSSA board that went out of their way to help obtain all of these prizes which totals in excess of 2000 dollars, what a great team. Now the next time you are out and about and happen to be in one of the fine establishments please express your gratitude to all these generous organizations because it sure makes selling these tickets easier with so many other wonderful prizes listed on the ticket. Remember to save the date for the Spring Banquet on April 5, 2014 and again it will be held at Quail Hollow as everyone was very pleased with what transpired. This is one that you will not want to miss, good food and lots of awards. Please respect the trails and the landowners and ride safe.

Friday Night Under the Lights Snowmobile Drag Racing The Best Professional Snowmobile Drag Racers in Quebec in Action at the 2014 Grand Prix Ski-Doo of Valcourt Presented by Intact Insurance Valcourt, Québec, January 14, 2014 — The Grand Prix of Valcourt presented by Intact Insurance which will take place from February 14 to the 16th has signed an agreement with Top Speed Racing (TSR) who will take over the organization and management of the Friday snowmobile drag racing portion of the great annual winter motorsports classic. The action will now begin earlier on Friday afternoon, February 14 and conclude under the lights. Once again, the day’s activities will be split into two parts, the first for amateur racers, and the second for the top professional racers in the field, who will also be competing in Round 2 of their 2014 TSR schedule. David Robidas and Joelle Chapdelaine launched Circuit TSR last year and it immediately filled a gap in the snowmobile drag racing world, amassing 277 entries for their season opener at Saint-Roch-de-Richelieu. “The Grand Prix got involved in snowmobile drag racing three years ago because there was a strong demand from fans. We had to organize, sanction and supervise the whole operation, but we don’t think this is our role,” said Marc-Antoine Lemay, Board member of the Grand Prix. “Our mission is to run the whole show, and that is why we transferred these obligations to Circuit TSR. Now, we can get back to doing what we do best, which is to put all of our energies into offering the best show possible to our faithful fans.” With the arrival of Circuit TSR on the Grand Prix scene, all the life in the fast lane competitors, both amateurs and professionals alike, will be under the supervision of an organization exclusively dedicated to the running of the drag racing program. The day of activities has been extended for the amateur drag racing portion and is now scheduled to run from 1:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. Professional racers will hit the track at 5 p.m., and depending on the number of entries, the day’s grand finales could run well into the evening under the lights. Fans who wish to warm-up between two runs will be able to party in the Ski-Doo Big Top with the music of the Party Rock Band.

Registration for amateur riders will be done exclusively on Friday February 14, 2014 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Circuit Yvon Duhamel located at 917, Route 222 in Maricourt (J0L 2L2) The amateur competition is open to 600 cc, 700cc, 800cc and 1000cc stock snowmobiles, while professionals can register for Improved, Open, Pro Stock, Trail Max, Pro Max and Outlaws will be extended until 3:30 p.m. Admission to the track is $10 for the whole day Friday, and free of charge after 4:00 p.m. Last year, over 60 racers entered the professional competition class. “We hope to at least double the number of professional entries for this year’s event,” said David Robidas, president of Circuit TSR. “The Grand Prix event is the second round of our 2014 race schedule, and every rider involved in one of the six championship classes will be looking for a win.”

A Full Weekend of Racing Activities Awaits Fans The 32nd running of the Grand Prix Ski-Doo of Valcourt presented by Intact Insurance will once again offer fans a full weekend of racing activities featuring the world’s best ice oval track snowmobile racers, including threetime World Champion Jacques Villeneuve. For three days, spectators will also witness the feats of the top professional snocross riders in North America as they battle for the big prize. Included on the program for the Grand Prix weekend are the daredevil motorcycle and ATV racing riders competing on the Yvon Duhamel ice oval speed track. Fans can also attend the highflying freestyle snocross show schedule to start around 4:00 p.m. Admission to the Freestyle Snocross exhibition is $15 per person after 4:00 p.m., and free of charge for Grand Prix of Valcourt ticket holders.

Tickets are available online at http://www. grandprixvalcourt.com/en/billets/ or by phone

at 1-866-532-7553 or 1-450-532-3443. Daily general admission tickets are also on sale at $10 each for Friday and $30 each for Saturday and Sunday. The heated Grand Prix Suites tickets are sold out. Accompanied by an adult, children under 12 are admitted free on the Grand Prix site. However this offer does not apply for the heated suites. About the Grand Prix of Valcourt The Grand Prix Ski-Doo of Valcourt is the great Quebec winter motorsports classic. Launched in 1983, this year the event celebrates its 32nd consecutive running the weekend of February 14-16, 2014. Some of the greatest names in snowmobile racing have had their moment at Circuit Yvon Duhamel in Valcourt, including Canadian Blair Morgan, who won eight snocross Grand Prix finales. Also outstanding is the Wahl family of Greenbush, Minnesota who have earned 13 wins in the feature race finale on the ice oval speedway: four by David between 1988 and 1994, six by his nephew Terry from 1995 and 2003, and three by Dustin, son of David, in 2008, 2009 and 2012. For fans, Quebec’s Jacques Villeneuve recorded the most popular victories in Valcourt in 1986, 2005 and 2006.

What an Event!

We’ve all had those opportunities in life to be part of something great. I’m no exception. I’ve had the awesome privilege of being a part of a great group for the majority of my life, snowmobilers. This past weekend I had the opportunity not only to be amongst those great people but also to partake in an event that extended my admiration to a new level. I’m talking about Pink Ribbon Riders. This is a group of snowmobilers that has taken on a cause with unmatched passion and dedication helping patients deal with the financial burden of fighting cancer. Over the years cancer has touched every one of us in some way, whether it be a family member or a friend or a friend of a friend, we have witnessed, heard and felt the devastating effects it has on them. Pink Ribbon Riders has recognized that need and has worked tirelessly to fill it. I was approached in early January about attending this year’s Pink Ribbon Ride-In event in Michigan. I decided I wanted to check it out and called up a few snowmobile buddies to form a team to raise money. We kicked it all off at a club reverse raffle and got the ball rolling with the fund-raising part. How did we raise money you ask? We put on our best bras and worked the room. Yes, I said Bras… We raised $$$ that night and headed to Michigan with the bras and money in hand feeling quite happy. The weekend event started on Friday with another “Best Bra” event that I must tell you was a “hoot” (no pun intended). This was followedup on Saturday by a Ride that had perfect -10 degree weather, raffles, Chinese auctions and a great dinner! I paused and looked around. I found myself surrounded by some of the best people I have ever had the awesome privilege to accompany. These people were there solely to give their time, money and support to a worthy cause and because of them the event raised $30,000 for all those in need. Folks, this money comes back to our area! It helps those around us that I mentioned earlier. So if you’d like to be a part of Something Awesome. Something Meaningful. Something that you will Never Forget. Be a part of Pink Ribbon Riders. I’m better for it and will attend next year.

Parkman POLAR BEARS

SNOWMOBILE CLUB

Parkman Polar Bears and Troy Snowmobile Association Snowmobile Christmas Party: Each year the Parkman Polar Bears and Troy Snowmobile Association snowmobile enthusiasts take part in an annual Christmas party. Other than the annual swap meet, the Christmas party is one of the most anticipated event of the season. Since this event signals that snowmobile season is looming and the trails will be open soon, we encounter large crowds. Using this to our advantage, we like to pass along any important trail news, swap trip plans, and begin the discussion on who has the fastest sled. This Saturday evening event, which included ham, roast, rolls, beverages, and table service, had entertainment provided by a DJ from Simmons, and the always-popular Christmas exchange. This is all out war to get the star presents that is of interest to that individual. Even if you end up with a plunger after the exchange, you can walk away with cash from the major 50/50 drawing or enter a raffle for a new sled from both local clubs and OSSA. The food, which I normally help prepare, had to be completely managed by Don Miller from Parkman Polar Bears and Anna and Brian Kothera from Troy Snowmobile Association since I was on crutches and was as useless as a Snowmobile without a belt. Many thanks for all of their great efforts. The Christmas party just wouldn’t have been complete without a visit from Santa. As the little ones ran to the window to look outside, their eyes widened as Santa rode in on his snowmobile. Per Santa the reindeers had a clutch problems or their jetting was a little off for the night? As Santa dismounted his two-cycled sleigh and entered the hall with lenses frosty over like cold bottle beer from the freezer, the kids’ anticipation elevated. All lined up, the excited children began reciting their Christmas wishes and hopes. Santa gave them some assurance a gift, provided by their parents, and sent them on their way one by one. Still in a daze, I didn’t hear Snowmobile & ATV and “you’ll shoot your out kid!” once.

Wakeman Sno-ballers

The New Year started off with a BANG as the winter fronts came through gifting us with a nice blanket of snow the beginning of January. For many of us, it was the first time that we were able to ride and we took full advantage of it. Unfortunately it was short lived with Spring-like weather that followed. However, now entering the 2nd half of January with an extreme cold snap our hopes are high, and with any luck we’ll see some snow again soon! With the new season upon us there are a lot of people getting out on their sleds. Whether you are a seasoned veteran or a newcomer to the sport, we would like to remind everyone to keep in mind some basic riding fundamentals to be applied EVERY time you ride: 1. Stay alert of where you are riding. Be courteous & stay off property that is marked or known to be non-snowmobile friendly. 2. Respect other people’s property and tread lightly. 3. ALWAYS ride safely!

Club News: We had our annual poker run on January 4th with a great turn out of 164 registered riders. With the help of local businesses, their donations for prizes and raffles and not to mention the club member’s hard work, we were able to make this ride a great success with numerous stops. Fun was truly had by all. Special thanks go out to the Wakeman Eagles and the City of Wakeman for letting us host this charity event again this year. The wining hand for this event was 5 of a kind in 8’s. Other club events that will be coming up include the annual family poker run. This run is child friendly as the stops are not made at the local watering holes. Also the club’s annual ski trip in March is still being planned; keep an eye on Facebook for updates.

community pride in everything we do while brining all of us, with the common interest of riding, together. We are not a seasonaltype club as we schedule events and gettogether’s year around. Also we are very family oriented and would like to extend an open invitation to anyone interested in attending our meetings or joining. Monthly we meet every 2nd and 4th Tuesday at 8pm at the Wakeman Eagles Lodge on Route 20. Please feel free to join us any time. See you on the trails! Adam Krenz

**Please don’t forget to “like” our Facebook page as we continuously post up-to-date information and up-coming club events there. About the club: The Wakeman Sno-Ballers are a nonprofit organization and show great

Yamaha Racers Post Strong Results in Hayward; Henry Wins X Games Bronze Pleasant Prairie, WI – The eye’s of the world were honed in on the slopes of Aspen, Colorado this past weekend, as Winter X Games 2014 brought together the best extreme athletes in the world for a competition only rivaled by the Olympics. Amongst them was adaptive snocross athlete and motocross legend Doug Henry. With special modification made to his Yamaha SR Viper RTX snowmobile, Doug rallied late in the final to pass Jim Wazny and earn the bronze medal at the line. The medal certainly wasn’t a first for the long-time Yamaha athlete who is perhaps best known for being the rider to first win an outdoor national motocross championship in 1998 aboard a Yamaha YZ400F. The bronze marked Doug’s sixth medal in X Games competition, with four coming from Winter X and two more at Summer X. While many of the world’s top snowmobile racers were at Winter X, several Yamaha independent riders were battling the ele-

ments in Hayward, Wisconsin in round two action of the COR Powersports cross-country series. The regional series is known for its demanding natural terrain courses, and Hayward proved to be all that and more, as sub-zero temperatures and wind gust in excess of 30-mph further challenged racers. Highlights from the weekend include a strong showing from Pro Women’s racer Sarah Wiedmeyer, who captured the win in Women’s, a second in the Trail class, and a third overall in Vet 30. Matching Sarah’s efforts was last year’s rookie of the year Mitch Sebastian, who grabbed a pair of second place runs in Junior 16-17 and the 85 classes with his Phazer. Mitch also joined his father to snag another second place finish in the Team class aboard a Yamaha SR Viper.

Other Yamaha racers with strong showings included: a fourth place finish by Justin Steck in Pro Open; a second place run by Dusty Bodine in Sport Stock; and a fifth place in Vet30 by Seth Thorson. Up next is the legendary Soo I-500, where Yamaha is one of the favorites to win it all. Mother Nature is supporting the Take a Friend Snowmobiling Campaign with record snowfalls and cold weather throughout most of North America. The campaign, which began 5 years ago is gaining momentum and many snowmobile associations and their clubs are planning special events to introduce non-snowmobilers to our winter activity of choice. Supporting the campaign is the continuing improvement and expansion of the trail systems and riding areas throughout North America and the great snowfall that the vast majority of us have experienced so far this winter. The snow cover and cold weather has encouraged many snowmobilers to pull their slightly used snowmobiles out of the garage, tune them up for winter riding, and get them ready for some winter fun. Reports from associations across North America are showing substantive increases in trail permit sales and in snowmobile registrations. In some cases, DMV offices are reporting a 300% increase in the number of snowmobile registration purchases compared to previous years. Dealers are reporting high traffic counts and strong sales for snowmobiles and related goods and services. All of this activity revolving around great snow cover and cold weather is encouraging in supporting the Take a Friend Snowmobiling efforts by snowmobile clubs and organizations. All of the Associations understand there is a Take a Friend Snowmobiling contest that is ongoing this season. The state and province that generates the most organized activity, supporting the Go Snowmobiling effort and reporting it to the ISMA Office, will be eligible to win a $5000 grant for their organization. Associations and Clubs are encouraged to organize a campaign and develop partnerships with their local Visitor and Convention Bureaus, Dealers, newspapers, radio stations and local land managers in the development and management of a unified campaign taking non-snowmobilers out for a fun snowmobile ride this winter. The general media is on board in supporting snowmobiling as they realize that the heavy snowfall and cold weather supports outdoor recreation - which is good for the mind and body! Positive stories about the economic impact that is generated by snowmobiling activity are being published in newspapers and magazines across North America and this is an excellent time to meet with and interact with your local news reporters. Event planning is relatively easy and should include easy riding opportunities for new snowmobilers with carefully planned stops and good food! The Safe Riders! campaign is also an important part of the Go Snowmobiling effort. Any group activity and/or Go Snowmobiling campaign must include the messages contained within the Safe Riders! campaign and always support safe, responsible snowmobiling. If you participate in a Take a Friend Snowmobiling activity, let your organization know. You can also send us photos and stories to our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/GoSnowmobiling. Our Facebook page is growing and has over 2800 “likes” and is getting bigger daily. Join us on Facebook today and Take a Friend Snowmobiling!
