Hello Ohio Snowmobilers. Winter is finally here. The time we all live for. Hopefully Mother Nature gives us a snow filled season. I want to take this opportunity to thank all the club members that support and keep the trails open. You guys and gals are the heart and soul of our Association. By joining a club every year, you help make the club more successful. You are the good example, by riding responsibly, are courteous to others, respect land owners, and are stewards of the land. We all get caught up in the “bad apples”, the riders who are the bad example, and unfortunately, the ones that get the publicity. We need to focus on the positive aspects and show other riders we are good people. We enjoy the beautiful winter scenery. We appreciate the land owners, who have graciously given their permission to travel across their property. We know that this is a privilege and we go to great lengths to protect the trails and ask others to respect them as well.

Club members are always willing to lend a hand, whether it is trail work, selling raffle tickets, or helping a buddy fine tune a sled. A few years ago, our family was on a trail ride, when we came upon a snowmobile, off the trail down an embankment and stuck. The young lady was a little scared. We helped get the sled back on the trail and made sure she was okay. She asked why we stopped and offered to help. The answer was simple. It was the right thing to do. Another night ride, we came up on a broken down sled, no lights, a very cold rider and not sure of where he was. We helped him get his bearings, towed the sled to the nearest intersection and when his father showed up in a truck, we all loaded the sled on the truck and they were on their way home. It felt good to help a fellow snowmobiler. Some day it may be one of us that need help. A great big thank you to all of the” GOOD SNOWMOBILERS” out there. You guys and gals show that when we lead by example, others will follow. Ride Safe and See you on the Trails

Hello everyone, I hope all of you have had enjoyable holidays and wish all of you a very prosperous and a snowy new year. I hope everyone got to get out and do a little riding as the season should be hitting full swing with a little help from Mother Nature. We had an awfully wet fall, it sure was a chore trying to get the trails ready but I know all of you did your part in getting the trails ready so now let’s log some miles out there SAFELY and courteously.

By now you should have made your reservations for the OSSA Ride In as we are less than a month away. I know there will be a whole lot of you that will be returning but for those that this may be your first time up there you will want to start a check list for this event. First thing, make sure your snowmobiles are registered with the BMV. Secondly, you will want to have your snowmobiles insured and should you have anyone operating snowmobiles and they do not have a driver license you will want them to take a snowmobile safety course. They will ask for these things if you get stopped. Thirdly, is that you will not want to move your snowmobile without your helmet on. That goes for even unloading or loading your sled from your trailer or just tooling over to your buddy in the staging area. Now for the fun stuff, things you will want to remember to pack. For Thursday evening’s event, wear a shirt of your favorite manufacture (Yamaha, Polaris, Artic Cat, or Ski-Doo) as this lets everyone know what you ride and it will show your pride in your ride. Friday will be a Hawaiian themed night so let’s see your creativeness come out. Saturday is the banquet and we want to see your club pride so if your club has any swag wear it proud and represent as we are all very proud of the clubs we belong too. We will be taking pictures of all the groups that come up to represent and see who has the most active clubs out there. Something new this year is we are going to have a live auction, that’s right a live auction and you might be asking yourself what are we going to be auctioning? Well that depends on all the clubs out there. We want to see how creative your club can be and create a sort of theme basket that we will auction off. The club that gets the highest amount for their basket will win 75 dollars and second place will get 25 dollars. There is no limit as what you can spend to create these baskets so donations are the key here. Some examples of baskets could be a booze basket, lottery basket, wine and cheese basket, date night basket, or maybe a, wait for it, A SNOWMOBILING BASKET. Come on I know you guys and girls got it in ya now do your club proud! I am going to stop here as I don’t want to give it all away; all I can say is you can’t participate if you haven’t made your reservations yet. I hope you have noticed that the Ride In this year has been moved to Gaylord and will be at the Alpine Lodge their phone number is 989-732-2431 to make your reservations. After you’ve made your reservations, you will need to call Barb Weaver at 440-576-0635 to let her know how many are coming and ages of any children as she coordinates this with the food and other events we have going on. Well did I motivate you enough to come up and join us? I hope so as this was the inspiration that got me started into this great organization. I hope to see a bunch of old faces and a whole bunch of new ones too, until then respect the trails and the land owners. Polaris Snocross Racer Andrew Lieders Earns Sweep, Wins Both ISOC Pro Lite Finals at Bessemer, Mich.

Polaris Pro Open Racers Are 2-3-4 in Points After Earning Three Podium Finishes MEDINA, Minn. (Dec. 11, 2013) – After an impressive display of Polaris Terrain Domination in ISOC National snocross racing last weekend, Polaris racers are second, third and fourth in the Pro Open points standings, and Polaris racers fill the top five spots in the Pro Lite standings. Leading the way in Dec. 6-7 ISOC racing at Bessemer, Michigan, were Andrew Lieders, who won both of the weekend’s Pro Lite finals, and Pro Open racers Kyle Pallin, Kody Kamm and Ross Martin, each of whom earned a spot on the podium with a top-three finish. In the weekend’s two Pro Open finals: • Kyle Pallin (Team LaVallee), who is from Ironwood, Michigan, less than 10 miles from the race site, finished fifth and second in the two finals, and he left the Upper Peninsula second in Pro Open points. • Kody Kamm (Hentges Racing) finished 3-4 in the weekend’s finals, and he is currently third in class points. • Ross Martin (Judnick Motorsports) finished second and fifth, and he is fourth in points. In the Pro Lite class: • Andrew Lieders (Team LaVallee) won both finals and moved into second in the points standings, behind fellow Polaris driver Andrew Carlson (Carlson Motorsports). • Five Polaris racers finished in the top 10 in both finals, including finishing 1-2-3-4 on Saturday. • Polaris racers are in the top five spots in the points standings. The weekend also included a win by Justin Tate (2-Eight Motorsports) in the Pro-Am +30 final.

PRO OPEN: Three Polaris Racers Reach the Podium

In Friday night’s Pro Open final, three Polaris racers finished in the top five, and in both of the weekend’s finals, Polaris racers earned five spots in the top 10. Ross Martin took second on Friday, while Kody Kamm was third, Kyle Pallin was fifth, Justin Broberg (Hentges Racing) was seventh, and Iain Hayden (Rockstar Energy Polaris) was 10th. On Saturday, Pallin reached the podium with a second-place finish, followed by Kamm in fourth, Martin in fifth, Broberg in seventh, Jake Scott (Team LaVallee) in 14th, and Levi LaVallee (Team LaVallee) in 15th. Polaris racers in the top 15 in Pro Open points were: 2. Pallin; 3. Kamm; 4. Martin; 7. Broberg; 10. Hayden; 12. Scott; and 15. LaVallee.

PRO LITE: Andrew Lieders Dominates at Bessemer

In the Friday night final, Andrew Lieders won and Andrew Carlson joined him on the podium with a third-place finish. Marcus Johansson (Carlson Motorsports) was fourth, Corin Todd (Leighton Motorsports) was sixth, and Zak Mason (Leighton Motorsports) was ninth. In Saturday’s final, Lieders won again for a weekend sweep, and he led a Polaris parade across the finish line. He was followed by Todd in second, Carlson in third, Johansson in fourth, Mason in sixth and Trevor Leighton (Leighton Motorsports) in 12th. After Bessemer, Carlson led in points by 8 ahead of Lieders, while Todd was third, Johansson was fourth, Mason was fifth, Leighton was 10th, and James Johnstad (Judnick Motorsports) was 13th.

Polaris Racers Win in Vets Class, Reach Podium in Pro-Am Women

Justin Tate won the Pro-Am +30 final at Bessemer, which put him second in class points, five points out of first. David Blunt (Team Blunt) took ninth and was ninth in points. In the Pro-Am Women final, Jennifer Pare (Leighton Motorsports) finished second, which left her second in points, six points out of first. Jakki Farmer (Farmer Racing/Fort Fremont Racing) finished fifth, Rachelle Fountain (Fountain Racing) was sixth, Tabitha Bode (Team BSR) was seventh, Jennifer Martel was ninth, and Jessica Martel was 10th. In the weekend’s Sport class finals, Evan Daudt (Daudt Racing) won on Friday and Braydon Love (444 Motorsports) finished second on Saturday.

• Know the local hazards and forecasted weather conditions. • • Do not operate at high speeds, especially when near houses, buildings, livestock, wildlife, trailheads, or other recreationists. • • Understand the importance of protective equipment and proper clothing while riding a snowmobile. • Do not use alcohol or drugs. • Be alert and constantly scan the trail or riding area for other snowmobiles, trail users, and hazards. • Do not engage in reckless, careless, or inappropriate behavior. • Ride defensively, be courteous, and use common sense. • Do not disturb wildlife or livestock. • Follow the rules of the road and abide by all trail signs.

When Snowmobiling...

Riding Positions Semi-Kneeling

Sitting

This is the safest and most common riding position. Position yourself on the snowmobile with your feet flat on the running boards. This will help cushion the effects of bumps on the trail and also keep your feet safe from the tracks or objects. When sitting, keep your body weight low so it will be easier to shift from side to side.

A semi-kneeling position, where one knee is up under you on the seat and the other foot is on the snowmobile’s running board, can be useful when riding in deep powder snow while riding at slower speeds. This will help with visibility and also help to control the snowmobile.

Standing

This position should only be used when you have visibility troubles in the sitting position. Be sure to keep your knees bent to absorb the bumps on the trail and keep your speed slow. Do not use this position for regular riding, for it can be hard to react to situations and doesn’t allow quick control in case of an emergency.

Kneeling

This is a good alternative riding position to rest the body while riding at slow speeds. For this position, put your knees up under you on your seat. It can help with better visibility, but it is more difficult to keep your balance.

Do not disobey local, state/ provincial, or federal snowmobile rules, regulations, and policies. Obey posted speed limits.

Safety Pledge • I will wear appropriate clothing, including gloves, boots and a helmet with a visor. • I will let my family or friends know my planned route, my destination and my expected arrival time. • I will not litter or damage trees and other vegetation.

• I will not snowmobile where prohibited. • I will be careful when crossing roads, and always cross at a right angle to traffic. • I will obey the rules and laws of the state or province I am visiting. • I will drive within the limits of my machine and my own abilities. • I will keep my machine in top shape and follow a pre-op check before each ride. • I will treat the outdoors with respect. • I will never drink and drive a snowmobile. • I will respect other peoples’ property and rights, and lend a hand when I see someone in need.

This is a semi-sitting position that is best suited for traveling over uneven terrain. Keep your feet flat on the snowmobile running boards and bend your knees. This will help with visibility too.

Nationally Approved Hand Signals Left arm raised at shoulder height, elbow bent and forearm vertical, wrist bent, move are from left to right over head, pointing to the right side of trails.

Arm raised from the shoulder and extended straight up over the head with the palm of hand flat. Left arm may also be used to signal “STOP”.

SLOWING

Left arm extended out and down from the side of the body with a downward flapping motion of hand to signal warning or caution.

LEFT TURN

Left arm extended straight out from shoulder and pointing in the direction of the turn.

LAST SLED IN LINE Raise forearm from handle bar and show clenched fist at shoulder height.

Snowmobile Tunnels Cleaning and Polishing Use this easy 3 Step Guide to clean, deoxidize, shine and protect your snowmobile tunnels and other metals on your sled, snowmobile trailer and sled accessories. Step 1: Remove surface grease and build up from snowmobile tunnels. Spray snowmobile belly pan cleaner onto snowmobile tunnel surface. Wipe clean with cloth. Tough deposits may require agitation with a damp cloth or a stiff bristle brush and dwell time. SledBrite belly pan cleaner is safe on decals. SledBrite Belly Pan Professional Strength, Premium Grade Snowmobile Cleaner – Safe, Biodegradable, Non Toxic, Non Aerosol, No VOCs Step 2: Remove oxidation from snowmobile tunnels. Spray snowmobile tunnel cleaner onto snowmobile tunnel or metal surface starting frrom the bottom and working your way up (this help prevents streaking). Let stand, allowing product to foam (15 seconds to 5 minutes, depending on severity of oxidation). Use a cleaning brush to move product around, ensuring even coverage. Wipe clean. NOTE: Your snowmobile tunnels or metals/aluminum may have varying levels of oxidation which may cause streaking. If streaking occurs, reapply; allow longer dwell time and follow application directions.

Step 3: Shine and protect snowmobile tunnels. Apply the snowmobile metal polish with a polishing ball and a common drill. Always use polishing ball with drill in forward, or clockwise, direction. Place two to four dime-size drops of polish proportionally across the ball for initial application. Add one to two additional drops as needed for the application. Start by using the drill at slow speeds until polish is absorbed, then increase speed. Snowmobile tunnel, or metal surfaces, will turn black with application. Buff off with additional polishing ball and/or additional clean, dry terry cloth towel for brilliant shine and sealed protection. Always use precaution when using hand tools. Always wear protective eyewear. Yamaha Racers Battle Bitter Cold and Blinding Snow Dust as Cross-Country Season Kicks-Off Pleasant Prairie, WI – The national cross-country tour came rolling across the frozen lakes of northern Minnesota with an icy-cold blast as Yamaha racers battled extreme sub-zero temperatures and near white-out conditions in the United States X-Country (USXC) season opener on legendary Pine Lake. The 2014 Yamaha cross-country team came ready to hone their chops with the all-new SR Viper RTX SE and lay the groundwork for a season of success. Each member of the team had a unique set of personal goals and challenges entering the weekend, and while the Pro podium eluded the blue squadron, it was a successful launch to the season, with more significant accomplishments almost certainly on the horizon. Returning rider Ben Lindbom started his first full season in the pro ranks after capturing the Semi-Pro title last winter. While Ben struggled during the first day of competition, key set-up changes Saturday night and new found confidence allowed Ben to settle in Sunday, and prove he has what it takes to run with the best in the business as his Viper showed blistering speed. Another familiar face in Yamaha blue was Re Wadena, who was intent on getting a feel for the new Viper in competition trim, while looking forward to when USXC races leave the frozen lake surface and give way to nasty ditch-lines and natural terrain. “I’m looking forward to some rough ditches, high speeds, and having a great time,” said Wadena, who is pumped about his chances aboard the new Viper.

“I want to go back to the Soo (500) and win it… I just love the Yamaha power,” said Davidson, who felt extremely confident about his chances aboard the new Viper. “Eight times I’ve won it (Soo I-500) and it’s gonna be the ninth this year.” Finally, newcomer to the Yamaha fold, Matthew Piche, got a feel for his first ever cross-country race at Pine Lake. The former professional snocrosser demonstrated a quick learning curve as he showed pro caliber stuff on the second day of racing. “That was the most fun I’ve had in a race since I raced X-Games,” said a pumped-up Piche after Sunday’s final.

South County ditch bangers The winter weather has arrived! “The South County Ditch Bangers” have been busy at work preparing the trails in the southern part of the county. As you ride, be aware of our new signs and trail markers thanks to monies saved from our annual reverse raffle. I would like to thank all of you who have dedicated your time to keep our club alive. Thank you also for the hard work and efforts to clear trails and make riding safer and more enjoyable for all. Upcoming Meetings: 1/12/14 at noon, Bill Hodge’s residence. We are already preparing for our “Annual Reverse Raffle.” MARK THE DATE: JANUARY 25TH. Doors open at 6pm. Tickets are on sale at the “Colebrook Lounge” and “Creekside Inn,” or you can contact any of our members. Make sure you get yours before they sell out. For those of you who have not been able to join us at this event in the past, it has proven to be a very good time! We provide an amazing meal of smoked pulled beef, potatoes, beans, rolls, and deserts. Keg beer and wash will also be provided (bring your own booze). Troy Snowmobile Association, LTD. welcomed several new members and each introduced themselves. We discussed the upcoming Christmas party on December 14th at 6pm at the Parkman Community House, which will be accompanying the Parkman Polar bears. Santa will also make his grand appearance for the children in attendance. We are also still selling sweatshirts with our new club logo and reflective truck/trailer stickers to our club members. Brian Kothera discussed pursuing the grass drags that have been in discussion. It’s now a possibility that we could have grass drags/ asphalt drags/swap meet at Thompson Raceway in Thompson, Ohio. We will keep researching/pursuing this possibility. Regarding trails, they will officially be opened for the 2013 season on December 22, 2013. All stockade gates have been put up and are locked until after gun season according to John Reynolds. Some new trails are to be opened on Amish properties. John Reynolds had some new quality signs made for this year. We have received permission from two more homeowners on property access. Poinsettia delivery was set for December 7th, and we had an amazing turn out for help delivering from our club members. We still have three bridges to be built before trails open, so we will have to have another trail work day. We were thinking of attempting to open trails from Troy township to Middlefield, but are not sure if this is possible any longer, even though there used to be trails all the way there.

We still need volunteers for a possible poker run during this season, next year’s swap meet, possible grass drags, another gun raffle, Groomer Parkman meetings(Rick Pausch/Kenny Hallstrom), OSSA Magazine articles(Dannella Reynolds), Memberships/ OSSA info(Anna Kothera). SAFETY COURSE – The next safety course will be held on Sunday, January 12, 2014, in the Ashtabula County Medical Center education building on Lake Avenue in Ashtabula. Times of the safety courses are 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. Safety courses are for children ages ten and over. OSSA RIDE-IN - The Ride-In will be held at the Alpine Lodge, 833 West Main Street, Gaylord, Michigan from February 6 to February 9, 2104. Tasty Treats for Winter Fun Melted Snowman Treat Ingredients: – Meltable candy wafers (one 14-ounce package makes 16 snowmen) – Mini chocolate chips (6 for each snowman) – Light cocoa candy melts – Rolos – Candy corn How to make it Make the nose by cutting the orange section from a candy corn, then slice it in half lengthwise. Roll the piece between your fingers to form a carrot shape.

Hot Chocolate Cake in a Cup Ingredients: – Cooking spray – Chocolate cake batter – Marshmallow creme

To make your snowman, melt the white candy in a bowl according to the package instructions, then scoop a rounded tablespoon onto a sheet of wax paper. With the back of a spoon, smear the candy into a puddle. Working quickly, stick on the light cocoa meltable candy wafer, add a dot of white melted candy, then place the Rolo on top. Finally, add the candy corn nose and mini chocolate chip eyes and mouth.

How to make it Simply coat the insides of oven safe mugs with cooking spray, then fill the mugs halfway with chocolate cake batter. Go Snowmobiling / Take a Friend Snowmobiling Campaign Gearing up for the Cold, Snowy Forecast December 4, 2013

Cold temperatures and record snowfall so far this season is motivating snowmobile clubs and associations throughout North America to begin making plans for Take a Friend Snowmobiling activities to be held this winter. Event planning has begun in many associations who are contacting the ISMA Office to obtain campaign support material. The Take a Friend Snowmobiling week is scheduled for February 8-17, 2014 but events can be held any time throughout the Winter. Take a Friend Snowmobiling is a campaign to encourage snowmobilers to take a non-snowmobiling friend out and introduce them to snowmobiling. Research shows that most people would like to go snowmobiling and, in fact, rate their level of interest a "9" on a 10 point scale. The Go Snowmobiling campaign is expanding as more clubs and associations are visiting the www.gosnowmobiling.org web site to obtain information on how to hold a Go Snowmobiling event. Activity on the www.gosnowmobiling.org web site continues to increase and the web site is an excellent source of information for snowmobilers and non-snowmobilers alike. Snowmobile Shows held across North America have experienced record activity and attendance. Chambers of Commerce and Visitor and Convention Bureaus in the snowbelt understand the importance of snowmobiling to the economic activity for their region, they are also reaching out to support the Go Snowmobiling Campaign. Clubs and Chambers of Commerce are partnering to hold events in their local area. With snowy forecasts in the near future for most of North America, outdoor enthusiasts are looking forward to the prospect of going snowmobiling this winter.
