Celebrating 20 Years

Annual Report 2016

KID Centered Jo Ellen Sherow

KoC Program Manager As a former director of research compliance at Ohio University, I am delighted to return to the University as the program manager for Kids on Campus. We just recently celebrated 20 years of serving the children of our region, and it is an honor to join an organization with such a long and successful history. Kids on Campus (KoC) is one of Ohio University’s most recognizable communityuniversity partnerships, providing quality afterschool programming to multiple districts within Athens and Perry Counties. We also offer additional opportunities through our highly respected on-campus summer camp. Our programs provide children in the region with access to unique educational and enrichment opportunities that otherwise would not be available to them. This year we were able to expand our services with the help of two new 21st Century Community Learning Center grants that funded programs at Alexander Local and Trimble Local Elementary Schools. And though they provide critical funding for educational and enrichment support, the 21st Century grants do not fund the provision of food. The majority of our participants qualify for free or reduced lunches during the school year, but lose access to these meals when school lets out for the summer. During summer camp we provide daily breakfast and lunch to each child to stand in for those free school lunches, and we also provide healthy snacks to the children in our afterschool programs. The support of community donors and partners is vital to the success of our mission. KoC is funded almost exclusively through grants and gifts. It is a testament to both the needs of the region and the dedication of those involved with Kids on Campus that the program has continuously attracted support for 20 years, even in a competitive funding environment. The needs continue to be great, and securing adequate funding to address these needs remains a priority for the program. KoC is grateful to the College of Health Sciences and Professions and to Dean Leite for their unwavering support for our program and its commitment to children in need. In addition to providing a home for KoC offices, the college also houses a dedicated faculty and staff who conduct fundraisers to provide such basic needs as shoes and warm winter clothing for program participants. We are thankful for the generosity of both our University and community members, who understand that fulfilling these basic needs are essential to academic and personal success. Please take a moment to review this annual report, which details our current successes and future goals. I invite you to join us as we move into our next 20 years of ensuring that the children of our region, regardless of economic circumstances, are given the greatest opportunity for personal growth and academic Contents success. Celebrating 20 Years

of service to area youth

Kids on Campus (KoC) was founded in 1996 by Ann Teske, then executive director for the Ohio University Institute of Health and Human Services, after she recognized a need for additional nutritional support during the summer for local kids who qualified for free or reduced lunches during the school year, but had no access to free meals during summer break. In addition to providing food, Kids on Campus brought exciting enrichment experiences and educational support to the summer program, which launched one of Ohio University’s most enduring and successful community-university partnerships. Now, 20 years later, Kids on Campus provides support to more than 1,000 local or at-risk or underserved children each year. KoC is housed within and supported by the College of Health Sciences and Professions under Dean Randy Leite. The program incorporates hundreds of volunteers and provides employment opportunities to local community members. Fulfilling the promise of student-centered learning, we provide Ohio University students with a unique opportunity to serve the community where they learn, and our kids have the chance to interact with and learn from people outside of their local community. KoC gives both University students and local kids the opportunity to acknowledge their differences and—perhaps more importantly—the many commonalities of their various backgrounds. Dean Leite stated during our anniversary celebration, “I am so proud of the Kids on Campus program and all the difference it has made in the lives of thousands of children over the last 20 years. It is a great example of what we can achieve when we commit ourselves to making a difference.” Kids on Campus looks forward to the next 20 years of service! 3 | KoC Annual Report

KoC

I just wanted to write and thank all of you for everything you have done for my son. He has attended Kids on Campus summer camp for five years and the afterschool program at Alexander for four. The social skills that he has learned through the program have been wonderful! KoC provides a setting where he can find new friends without being under mom’s thumb. The afterschool program provides him with new experiences that are not school-like or homework related, but rather all-around fun. I am happy that he is participating in activities instead of playing video Thank you all for everything games at home. Through you do to help my son become a the help of KoC, my son has discovered archery and happy and well-adjusted child! he is very good at it! My son receives extra help with his homework, which is a lifesaver for both him and me. It reassures me that his homework is done in case we don’t get home until late in the evening. This is wonderful! Miss Holly and Miss Abby have been unbelievably helpful navigating middle school homework these past two years. The Kids on Campus program has even been included in my son’s IEP. Connect and Learn In the few years that I have been a part of Kids on Campus, I have seen tremendous growth not only in our program and our students, but also in community partnerships. In truth, I think this is where the strength of KoC lies. The program allows afterschool participants the opportunity to connect with and learn from college students, local business people, professors, specialists in their field and other mentors. It is exciting, for example, to see a student who loves big trucks, music or nature talk to a community member whose career or passion is built around big trucks, music or nature! While the kids might not remember that guest’s name five or ten years down the road, I know many of my students have been exposed to something new or exciting that could develop into a future career or passion for them, as well.
