The monochromatic Aethelred Eldridge mural painted under the arched walkway beneath Seigfred Hall, and seen by generations as a cultural landmark in Athens, was fully restored and rededicated in 2015. Eldridge, who taught at the School from 1957 to 2014, is recognized in the Dictionary of the Avant-Gardes, a compendium of avant-garde of the last two centuries, published in 2000.

People may not understand exactly what we do. Or why we do it. And that’s okay, because it’s how we’ve always been. There’s something within us that separates us from what’s been done before, and drives us toward what we know we’re capable of, together. The feeling of new clay waiting to be formed. The first frames of a test shoot. The sound of spattering paint on a fresh canvas. Your final critique. Inspiring others.

It’s all in the process. It’s what keeps us up at night and compels bravery, reckless abandon, collaboration, and the kind of self-discipline reserved only for those who blaze their own trail in life. We welcome the challenge. The pursuit of genius. Originality. Our infinite muse. And chances are, we’ll never be finished. Because we aren’t just going to school—we’re continuing our life’s work. We’re driven to empower others through the arts, and supported by a town that challenges us to do more. Because, at the Ohio University College of Fine Arts, you don’t just find your place in the world,

you create it.

“In this piece, I’m attempting to embrace dark skin and all the notions surrounding it. My work is evolving from a micro expression, a scientific interest of skin cells and melanin to a more macro look at how I view beauty and femininity. Through this process I have come to love my skin more. Expressing my feelings and being vulnerable was not easy, but my professors really pushed it out of me and made it OK. That’s what being an artist is about.“ D. MYNTIA DANIELS // B.F.A. Fine Arts OHIO Cheerleader Member of the Undergraduate Art League Class of 2014

ART + DESIGN AT OHIO

“When starting a new project, I just go for it. Most people start with research and sketches but for me it’s about getting started. In our program you are encouraged to develop your own process. I believe that unless you’re given complete artistic freedom you won’t be doing what you love.”

Among the digital fabrication tools, students have access to multiple 3D printers like the MakerBot Replicator Mini, which uses a fused deposition modeling technology designed to make file preparation and printing a fast, easy, and user-friendly process.

A day in the life OF AN ART+ DESIGN STUDENT

7:00

7:00 a.m. Woke up and wiped the sleep from my eyes. Got dressed, grabbed my portfolio bag, and left to start my day in Seigfred. 9:30 a.m. During a break in Professor Adleta’s description studio, my classmates and I discussed our struggles and triumphs over the newest project while enjoying some fresh air. 12:00 p.m I grabbed some lunch from the Shively Grab-n-Go on my way to Intro to Sociology.

5:00

2:30 p.m. After class, I carved out some time in my afternoon to do some preemptive research for my structure studio class and connect with friends. 5:00 p.m. Met up with some folks at the gallery for the opening of a new exhibition and was introduced to an interesting visiting artist. Feeling full of ideas, I returned to the studio to get some initial thoughts on paper. 7:00 p.m. After a brief dinner break, I returned to the art building to work in the studio.

11:59

9:00 p.m. Back in my room, exhausted but satisfied with my productive day, I caught up with my roommates and did some homework in bed. 11:59 p.m. Finally time to rest, I turned out the lights, and looked forward to what tomorrow would bring.

Learning, made fresh.

In America’s Rust Belt, abandoned mines leach toxins into streams and rivers, causing damage to the environment. Professor John Sabraw’s pursuit to extract toxins from these waterways and transform them into acrylic paint which he uses to create stunning works of art, has been highlighted in publications such as Gizmodo, Scientific American, and the Smithsonian Magazine.

“There are few, if any, students at universities that work harder or longer hours than art students. Number one, you’ll be able to outwork anyone in your field, whatever field that is. Number two, we teach challenging creativity based on contemporary structures, so you’ll be able to adapt on the fly and out-think the people around you.” JOHN SABRAW // Area Chair, Professor of Painting + Drawing

Professors fueled by passion. “I want to inspire my students to make art they can believe in and stand behind, to keep asking questions of themselves and the world around them. I want them to be individuals who no matter what they do with their lives, and how they want to engage in society, are open minded, creative, and committed members of their communities.” ALEX HIBBITT Area Chair, Associate Professor of Ceramics

“My life as an artist is not so much about arriving at any pre destined peak. It is a daily, willful act of listening and responding to my surroundings. I see the creative process as a kind of sanctuary and notation of presence. The deliberate act of cultural production, in my view, can be political. Choosing to participate in the arts, is also actively choosing not to participate in other activities.” LORI ESPOSITO Lecturer, Painting + Drawing Foundations Chair

“I want students to develop a creative incentive at the core of their personality. I hope they live their lives by responding in expressive, creative ways to the events and problems they encounter throughout life.” ART WERGER Professor of Printmaking

“My work poses questions about the medium and its terms of representation: its materials, histories, and social meanings. While I identify as a photographer, my work encompasses film, video, digital media, and writing. I see my photographs as a product of my skepticism and desire to believe in the medium of photography.” LAURA LARSON Chair, Professor, Photography + Integrated Media Director of Studies for Studio Art, Honors Tutorial College

The Alumni Gateway was a gift of the Class of 1915 to mark the 100th anniversary of the first graduating class of Ohio University, the first graduation in the old Northwest Territory. Greeting all who enter with an inscription that reads: “So enter that daily thou mayest grow in knowledge wisdom and love. For those departing, “So depart that thou mayest better serve thy fellowmen thy country and thy God.”

Live surrounded by beauty Nestled in the rolling hills of southeast Ohio, the University’s Athens Campus offers students a residential learning experience in one of the nation’s most picturesque academic settings. Love at first sight—that’s how many people feel when they first step onto Ohio University’s College Green. They talk about the welcoming vibe, smiling faces and brick pathways, classic architecture, the flowers in spring, or the squirrels jumping about the leaves in the fall. Students and parents visiting for the first time often tell us, “This is what a college campus should look like!” No matter the season, no matter the weather, Ohio University’s beautiful campus has a way of drawing you in and making you feel welcome!
