People may not understand exactly what we do. Or why we do it. And that’s okay, because it’s how we’ve always been. There’s something within us that separates us from what’s been done before, and drives us toward what we know we’re capable of, together. Never settling for acceptable. Sharing yourself. Working through the exhaustion. The nerves of opening night. Inspiring others.

It’s all in the process. It’s what keeps us up at night and compels bravery, reckless abandon, collaboration, and the kind of self-discipline reserved only for those who blaze their own trail in life. We welcome the challenge. The pursuit of genius. Originality. Our infinite muse. And chances are, we’ll never be finished. Because we aren’t just going to school – we’re continuing our life’s work. We’re driven to empower others through the arts, and supported by a town that challenges us to do more. Because, at the Ohio University College of Fine Arts, you don’t just find your place in the world,

you create it.

DANCE AT OHIO Approximately 70% of our graduates continue in the field of dance and related arts.

“Here you will be put to the test. But prior to the task you’re equipped with the knowledge from our professors. I will leave knowing myself through my art—my own way of moving—and I don’t think I would have found that anywhere else.” TREZON DANCEY / B.F.A. Dance Performance & Choreography Member of Acacia Fraternity Class of 2017

“In dance, process is pushed because a final product is just that, an end product—to the audience it’s just one thing to watch. There is much more that goes on behind the scenes that is much more important. Everything I’ve learned is because we are taught to put the process over the product.” OLIVIA CANCELLI / B.F.A. Dance Performance & Choreography Class of 2017

Want to see the world? Our students can choose from 60 study abroad and exchange programs every year. The Office of Global Opportunities regularly oversees a diverse portfolio of study abroad, domestic study away and exchange programs that span five continents and 40 countries.

A day in the life OF A DANCE STUDENT

12:15

8:00a Woke up, checked my phone to see what I missed last night, threw some breakfast in my bag (granola and fruit) and I’m off. 9:15a My first class of the day in Putnam Hall— Ballet Technique II. Probably my favorite part of the day. 11:05a Off to meet with my group to rehearse choreography for composition presentation.

3:30

12:15p Grabbed lunch uptown with some of my roommates before my afternoon classes. This semester I’m taking Survey of Astronomy, Spanish I, and African Dance Technique II. 3:30p Dropped by the Athena Cinema with friends to see a dance film produced by visiting artist who will be setting work on us next week. (I can’t believe I get to perform in the Winter Concert my first year!)

9:15

5:00p Visited the SHAPe Clinic - they specialize in treating and preventing injuries for artists, then home to knock out some homework. 8:15p Late night rehearsal with The Movement, a student organization, that puts on some amazing dance presentations and artistic collaborations.

“Be open-minded and willing to experiment —there are so many different pathways to a career in dance, and you never know when you will discover a unique interest or talent. Dance technique and performance form the foundation for your identity as a dance artist/scholar/professional, but it goes well beyond the studio.” TRESA RANDALL, Ph.D. / Associate Professor Director of Studies Honors Tutorial College Program in Dance Recipient of the 2015 Ohio University Presidential Teacher Award

“What I love most about teaching is that it engages students in active learning. As a studio teacher in modern, jazz, and ballet techniques, I encourage students to explore the movement so that they can find individual freedom of expression within the class structure and in doing so I get to see them explore and discover their very own artistic voice. The rigor and physical demands of my class do not interfere with the establishment of a fun, healthy, and positive learning environment.”

I am interested in encouraging our students to investigate and develop a rigorous physical, intellectual, and creative practice, which can inform and push them beyond their perceived physical limitations and internal censorship.”

“I want to encourage our students to think outside the box, to be creative problem solvers, and to be bold and daring artists. An education in dance cultivates perspective, and it’s beautiful to watch students develop their unique artistic voices. I love watching students mature into thoughtful and articulate artists, thinkers, and makers.”

“Working with students to unlock their potential excites me. They bring a drive to their learning that motivates unpacking a new experience and turning it into felt and learned knowledge. This type of energy creates an environment fueled by questions and curiosity.”

Space to create. You’ll fall in love with our welcoming campus—one of the most picturesque in the nation. More than three-quarters of our first-year students choose to participate in Learning Communities, which bring together small numbers of students with common academic interests to take a cluster of common courses. These students often form friendships that can last a lifetime. OHIO is where you can be yourself—and become your best self.

Putnam Hall is the home of OHIO’s Dance Division. It serves as the hub of activity for students and faculty. Centrally located, Putnam Hall is just steps from uptown Athens, East and South Greens.

Built in 1926, Putnam Hall originally housed an elementary school which provided hands-on experience while training teachers.

The Alumni Gateway was a gift of the Class of 1915 to mark the 100th anniversary of the first graduating class of Ohio University, the first graduation in the old Northwest Territory. Greeting all who enter with an inscription that reads: “So enter that daily thou mayest grow in knolwedge wisdom and love. For those departing, “So depart that thou mayest better serve thy fellowmen thy country and thy God.”

Live Surrounded by Beauty Nestled in the rolling hills of southeast Ohio, the university’s Athens Campus offers students a residential learning experience in one of the nation’s most picturesque academic settings. Love at first sight—that’s how many people feel when they first step onto Ohio University’s College Green. They talk about the welcoming vibe, smiling faces and brick pathways, classic architecture, the flowers in spring, or the squirrels jumping about the leaves in the fall. Students and parents visiting for the first time often tell us, “This is what a college campus should look like!” No matter the season, no matter the weather, Ohio University’s beautiful campus has a way of drawing you in and making you feel welcome!

Auditions

Acceptance to dance requires an audition. Auditions are scheduled to coordinate with various university application deadlines. Students who audition and are accepted into the dance program must also apply and be accepted by Ohio University. The audition class includes modern, ballet, and jazz or African portions, and improvisation. Each of these provides the dancer with an opportunity to demonstrate their talent, level of training, and aptitude for further study in dance. Although attending a scheduled audition is the best possible means of representing your talent, if you are unable to attend, please call our office at (740) 593-1826 to discuss the possibility of other arrangements.

“Ohio University prepares its students for multiple possibilities once you graduate. There is an emphasis on choreography, for instance, that may open up opportunities that a performance based school wouldn’t offer. Also, our alumni work in different areas of the field such as dance movement therapy, owning a company, or heading up the Bessie Awards!” MATTHEW KELLER/ Honors Tutorial College (HTC) B.F.A.
