Welcome!
Hey, bobcats! On behalf of Ohio University’s Women’s Panhellenic Association and Executive Board, I would like to welcome you to Primary Recruitment! I am so excited for all of you to start your journey to find your home away from home here in Athens. I understand that this might be an anxious and scary time right now but know you are not alone. Wherever you end up at the end of this process you will always be a part of this community of women who will always lift you up. This group of women will continue to offer you opportunities, friendships, and experiences to last you a lifetime. It is my hope that this booklet helps you get a deeper understanding of what to expect from all ten of our amazing chapters and what we can do for you! OU’s ten Panhellenic sororities excel in areas like academics, philanthropy, service, and leadership. We are a well-respected group of women who continue to make a difference in the Athens community by helping the local food banks, donate thousands of dollars to our philanthropies, and spend our time working as staff for the university, in off-campus facilities, or as volunteers for community and campus-based projects. We also serve as the largest community of women on OU’s campus making up 13% of the undergraduate students. When it comes to my own experiences and other women in Sorority life I thought I would share some thoughts with you. First, this process is all about YOU! Throughout the process, it is best to keep an open mind and a positive attitude. Listen to your heart and not to those around you. Second, stay strong to your personal morals and values. This process is about you finding a chapter that serves you and what you are looking for. Finally, HAVE FUN! This process can be stressful but remember this is a time for you to meet other PNM’s and women so relax and enjoy it! I am so excited to welcome you each into our supportive and incredible community here at OU. I truly wish all of you the best of luck with recruitment!

I am glad you decided to join this amazing family at Ohio University. This is a very exciting time in your life. One filled with many emotions - the excitement of a new adventure, the anxious feeling of moving away from home, and the anticipation of a new beginning. One of the best things you can do during your time here at Ohio University is to join a sorority and to become a part of our Sorority & Fraternity community. Founded upon the common principles and core values of scholarship, leadership, community service, character, and the formation of lifelong friendships, the sorority women at Ohio University are continuously challenged to uphold these principles in their daily lives. Each one of our sororities has something wonderful to offer you, just as you have many things to offer them. With over 1,500 members. Ohio's sororities emphasize the personal attributes that will make you a solid, well-rounded student and citizen. I encourage you to enter the recruitment process with an open mind and to meet as many women as you can and know that this is the beginning of a new and unforgettable experience. Best of luck as you explore what Panhellenic has to offer you!

INTERFRATERNITY COUNCIL (IFC) The IFC is the largest men's organization at OHIO serving as the governing body for 11 member fraternities and over 600 men. IFC fraternities are a home away from home where lasting friendships are made and networks with thousands of alumni are found. The Ohio University Interfraternity Council represents and provides undergraduate fraternity members a profound experience by encouraging philanthropy, community service, academic success, networking, and organizational growth. MULTICULTURAL GREEK COUNCIL (MGC) The MGC is home to one cultural and interest-based co-ed Latin-X fraternity but is in the process of expanding its membership. The mission of MGC is to serve the entire student body through our efforts to improve campus life by fostering collaboration among and within all of the member chapters. By building interaction between diverse groups, the MGC hopes that its members collaborate effectively and learn to appreciate people whose race, sexual identity, gender, gender expression, religion, ethnicity, and interests may be different from their own. NATIONAL PAN-HELLENIC COUNCIL (NPHC) NPHC Is home to 6 historically African-American fraternities and sororities that are governed by the National Panhellenic Council, Inc. VALUES
OF
SORORITY LIFE & SISTERHOOD
From Bobcathon to Homecoming, Greek Week to formals, and everything in between, sorority women are not only involved but are leaders in their respective organizations. Sorority women at Ohio University participate in a wide variety of projects they are one of the most driven and dedicated student groups on this campus. Sisterhood is the foundation of all aspects of sorority life. The variety of activities, philanthropies, initiatives, and socials are a spectacular experience because you share them with your sisters. Membership provides you with an opportunity for personal growth and individual achievement within a sisterhood of support. Your accomplishments are shared and your goals are encouraged. The spirit of the unspoken bond between sisters is like any other relationship. You have a chapter of women uplifting you, pushing you to attain your dreams. Sisterhood means unconditional friendship that comes from being respected for your individuality. It is being loved for who you are. Sisterhood is the making of friendships that will last a lifetime, and it will help you through both good and bad times. It is having women there to support you through your college and life transitions. Whether it is your "big sister," your roommates, or your new-member class sisters, you will find many women you can count on to be there during one of the most important times in your life. 7
VALUES IN ACTION
SCHOLARSHIP & ACADEMICS
Academic success is one of the most important parts of the college experience. WPA recognizes the importance of integrating scholarship into the sorority experience. While WPA does not require a minimum GPA to participate in recruitment, each individual sorority has a minimum GPA requirement for membership eligibility. Individual sororities have GPA requirements that range from a 2.5 to a 2.8 on a 4.0 scale depending on each national organization.
Collegiate fraternal organizations were founded on the principle of successful scholarship. The academic performance of each chapter is tabulated every semester to determine overall chapter rankings. The all-sorority average has been consistently higher than the undergraduate all-women's average for the past several years.
SERVICE & PHILANTHROPY
Sorority women's interests and concerns go far beyond the confines of campus life. Sororities sponsor a multitude of activities each year to support the local community and raise money for philanthropies. Every chapter volunteers time to a particular project. At least once a year, each sorority holds a community-wide event that encourages other sorority and fraternity chapters to help raise money for their charitable affiliated organization. Many Individual sorority women volunteer in local programs, such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Take Back the Night, and Better Bystanders. As a council, WPA hosts Sisterhood of the Traveling Dresses each spring, providing prom dresses to Athens County. 8
VALUES IN ACTION
INCLUSIVITY
WPA is committed to supporting and nurturing a community that showcases the diverse and inclusive values of the women's-only sorority experience. We respect our members to respect every individual regardless of their race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression, religion, disability, socioeconomic status, or any other characteristic. Our community regularly engages in dialogue on important topics such as diversity, privilege, cultural appropriation, cultural competency, and inclusivity. We are committed to engaging campus and community stakeholders as well as utilizing campus, community, and member organization resources to initiate change on our campus. SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
Social activities can vary largely from chapter to chapter, but they are great opportunities for a sorority to develop sisterhood and friendships. Chapters work year-round to plan events with other organizations on campus to strengthen the bonds between their members. WPA takes an active interest in building well-rounded women and sponsors many programs on campus to cultivate character, integrity, and the ability to work well with others. Many times, a chapter will co-sponsor an event brought to campus by a sorority to show Its support for the sisters and its cause. Sorority chapters often sponsor socials within their own organization and with other organizations like cookouts, parent's weekend events, semi-formals, and more.

FINANCIAL OBLIGATION
Each sorority has different financial obligations associated with membership in its chapter. You should plan to ask questions on how the sororities schedule payment and other fiscal expectations. Many sororities do not assess, which means they will never ask for additional payment once you have paid dues for that semester. It is important to recognize those semester dues for some chapters are all-encompassing while others may not be. The most important thing to keep in mind regarding dues is that it is an investment. The return on investment of being a member of the WPA community is invaluable. With all the opportunities provided by sorority membership, it is well worth every penny.
SORORITY HOUSING
This year, 9 of our 10 sororities have houses in close proximity to campus. While all sophomores are required to live on campus, sorority and fraternity members are provided the privilege of applying for a second-year exemption to live in their recognized sorority or fraternity house but must meet certain academic and conduct criteria prior to being approved. Living in the house is one of the best experiences to have while in a WPA sorority. You are surrounded by a large number of your sisters on a daily basis and are situated at the center of your sorority. The house is the hub of sorority life, and living there gives you even more opportunities to get involved. From rounding up your sisters to hang out, to studying together In the lounge for a huge exam, countless memories will be made simply by living together. Each sorority has its own system of filling the house each year, whether on a volunteer basis, through officer obligation, or by new member class.
PARTICIPATION
New members can expect to attend one chapter meeting and one new member meeting per week. While these two meetings may vary in length from week to week, the average number of hours spent in meetings held by Panhellenic chapters is 1-2 hours each per week depending on the items on the agenda. Members are expected to participate in philanthropy events, community service, recruitment, homecoming, and other campus events. They are encouraged to participate in sisterhood and social events. These events may not occur every week. but members are expected to attend. The average number of these additional events is 1 per month.

PRIMARY
RECRUITMENT
The primary recruitment process is the primary method by which the WPA sororities acquire new members. It will begin September 17, 2021, and end September 26, 2021. This process consists of a kick-off orientation program and four rounds of events that allow potential new members the opportunity to learn about each sorority at Ohio University. These events will give you the opportunity to ask questions about each chapter experience. It is important to recognize that recruitment is a mutual selection process. After each round, you will be asked to release a certain number of sororities, and each sorority will be expected to release a certain number of women. Participation does not obligate you to join a sorority, nor does it guarantee membership in one. However, if you maximize your options and continue through the entirety of the process with an open mind, you will hopefully be content with the result. REGISTRATION
To participate in primary recruitment, a woman must have completed their registration, which opened on June 1, 2021. The online registration form must be completed and submitted with the $35 registration fee by September 17th at 6:00 p.m. This date is very important as late registrants will not be accepted. Potential new members are encouraged to register as early as possible to ensure a leisurely transition into their Rho Gammas' (Recruitment Guides') group. Once you register for Primary Recruitment, you will receive a confirmation email and will be added to our listserv which will provide you with recruitment updates and community event information. Attending these programming opportunities will provide you with a jumpstart into the recruitment experience. MEALS
All women going through recruitment will be provided meals at the designated times listed on the schedules. The registration fee that is paid by the potential new member covers the costs associated with providing these meals. All other meals during recruitment will be the responsibility of the potential new member. It is highly encouraged for potential new members to bring snacks and water to have during rounds of recruitment.

Recruitment Advice
SOME
HELPFUL
REMEMBER THAT SORORITY MEMBERSHIP IS FOR LIFE AND TO MAKE YOUR OWN DECISION
This is your choice. Don't listen to your friends', boyfriends', or other potential new members' opinions. It is an honor to be a part of the Ohio University WPA. Each sorority maintains high membership qualifications. Keep an open mind and make the most of all invitations you may receive. There are women just like you that you could be friends with in every sorority.
EAT BEFORE YOU COME AND GET A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP
Recruitment week Is a long process. Please make sure you take care of your body and eat nutritious meals. Drink lots of water and get plenty of sleep. Your Rho Gamma's will have snacks and we will have meals so please take advantage of these resources if you need them, but please come prepared with your own snacks and water too!
COMMENTS SHOULD BE KEPT TO YOURSELF
If you don't like a particular sorority, make sure that you're not basing your opinion on one woman you met in the sorority or on someone else's negative opinions. If you're still unsure about a particular sorority for you, do not share your opinion with others. It should be a private decision. You never know when your least favorite choice could be someone else's top choice.
UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR INCLUDES DOING OUT DURING RECRUITMENT WEEK
The recruitment week Is a very important week, and while WPA encourages you to make the most of this time by creating new relationships with women in the community, consuming alcohol, attending parties, and/or going to bars before the 'dry period' is over is not permitted. The 'dry period' does not end until September 28th.
TEMPERATURES MAY STILL BE HOT!
Be sure to be drinking plenty of water, and even electrolytes. Wear comfortable, light clothing that you wouldn't mind sweating a little bit in. Maybe even consider bringing a mini handheld fan if you tend to overheat.

asked
F FR RE EQ QU UE EN NT TL LY Y Q QU UE ES ST T II O ON NS S IF I GO THROUGH RECRUITMENT, DO I HAVE TO JOIN A SORORITY?
You are not obligated to join and may withdraw at any point during the process. This is a time for you to meet people, evaluate an opportunity, and make a decision that is best for you. DO I NEED ANY RECOMMENDATIONS OR LETTERS OF REFERENCE?
Some chapters may review letters of reference from alumnae recommending a potential new member; however, it is not required for all chapters, nor does it guarantee membership in a sorority. IM A LEGACY TO A SORORITY, IS THERE ANYTHING THAT I SHOULD KNOW?
Each sorority views legacy statuses differently. In fact, a number of our national organizations no longer recognize their legacy policies to create a more inclusive recruitment process. Each potential new member is evaluated individually and no chapter is obligated to extend membership to a legacy. Likewise, you should not feel pressured to join a certain sorority because someone in your family did. WHAT SHOULD I TALK ABOUT DURING RECRUITMENT ROUNDS?
It is important to be yourself during recruitment. Don't be afraid to ask questions - It is as important for you to get to know the sorority members as it is for the members to get to know you. Some questions you might ask are: What are the expectations of your new member program? What is your philanthropy? What kind of academic programs do you have? In what type of campus community activities are your sorority members involved? P N M

FAQs CONTINUED... WHAT IF I WANT TO BE IN ONE CERTAIN SORORITY?
Only wanting to be a member of one specific sorority or only considering a few sororities can severely limit a potential new member's options for membership and can lead to disappointment. Panhellenic discourages choosing a sorority based on stereotypes or others' opinions. We encourage you to keep an open mind & make a decision that is right for you. WHEN CAN I LIVE IN THE SORORITY HOUSE?
Sophomores are eligible to apply for a second-year off-campus housing exemption but must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA no outstanding university conduct and have a chapter facility that meets all of the OSFL's guidelines. The housing exemption process begins In February of each year. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF JOINING?
You will gain supportive friends, and opportunities to hold leadership positions, get involved with community service and philanthropic events. It will also connect you with a nationwide network of fellow sisters. IS JOINING REALLY FOR LIFE?
Yes! Not only are there opportunities for involvement and close friendships as a collegiate member, but there are for alumnae members as well. You can join an alumnae chapter, serve as a chapter advisor, volunteer at a national level, or even work for your sorority's national office. HOW DO I LEARN MORE ABOUT NPHC & MGC SORORITIES?
The Office of Sorority & Fraternity Life is happy to connect you with the leadership of both councils, or you can meet members of their chapters at the Involvement Fair, Greek Expo, and other community-wide events. We would also encourage you to take the time to learn more about their national organizations online! WHAT IF I DON'T GET INVITED TO ATTEND THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF CHAPTERS DURING EACH ROUND?
During the recruitment process, the number of chapters a PNM will visit each day will vary from one woman to the next. The number of events is not important; it is the conversations and people you are interacting with that are important. WHAT IF I DISCOVER THE SORORITY I'VE SELECTED IS NOT THE RIGHT ONE FOR ME?
Once you've accepted a bid to a sorority, the new member process is designed to make sure you are ready to make a life-long commitment to an organization. This period normally lasts 6-8 weeks but depends on your organization. If before initiation you decide you are not ready for the commitment, you can break your pledge from the organization. If you would like to participate in recruitment again, you can do so at the time of the next primary recruitment period. Once you have accepted a bid from an NPC organization, you must wait until the next primary recruitment period to be eligible to receive another bid from an NPC organization. WILL I BE HAZED?
Ohio University has a strict zero-tolerance policy against hazing and works with our chapter members closely to ensure that you will have a safe and healthy new member experience. If at any point you feel that you or someone you know is being hazed you can report it at www.ohio.edu/greek I DON'T DRINK WILL I STILL FIT IN?
Just because an individual joins a fraternity or sorority does not mean that they must consume alcohol to be a part of the chapter. All chapters are required to register alcoholic events with the university and provide various safety measures to promote the safe and legal use of alcohol. The vast majority of fraternity and sorority events are non-alcoholic. CAN I DO THIS AS A NURSING MAJOR?
Absolutely. We actually have several women in our sorority community who are nursing majors. We do understand that it is a time Intensive major, so we would encourage you to be upfront with your chapter about your time commitment and schedule so that you can have a stress-free experience.

MASKS DURING RECRUITMENT
As we approach recruitment, the situation with COVID-19 is rapidly changing. As a result, our Office of Sorority & Fraternity Life and WPA must be focused on prioritizing the health and safety of everyone involved in the community, especially during the recruitment process. That Includes taking steps to curb the spread of the virus and being prepared to shift our recruitment plans quickly in response to changing conditions. We will expect all of our members and potential new members to follow all COVID-19 health and safety guidelines and encourage you to follow the most current CDC recommendations on how to protect yourself and others from getting sick. Should masks not be required by the campus, we are still committed to creating a welcoming environment for anyone who might choose to wear a mask.
