Editor’s Letter Admit it: not everything about this most wonderful time of the year feels so wonderful. This has been a year that challenged us all in very different ways, and we’re still reeling, so the need for festive cheer has never been more dire. Yes, 2020 will feel the palpable absence of big parties and fancy soirées, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go all out when it comes to your wardrobe – even if you’re by yourself at home. f you refuse to start your day without that double-shot-no-foam latte, you already know that coffee is the ultimate pick-me-up. But did you know your favourite morning beverage is much more than that? Coffee has long been celebrated for its beauty-boosting abilities and often used as an all-natural alternative to your average body scrubs. But before we get into the DIY recipe, let’s talk about how coffee scrubs benefit your skin. From exfoliating and anti-inflammatory properties to improved circulation, tightened skin, and the reduction of cellulite, coffee gives a smoother appearance overall. And did you know that coffee grounds even prevent ageing through UV rays as they have a protective effect on the skin? If you’re looking for a reason to upgrade your beauty routine, you’ve found one.
You need half a cup of organic ground coffee, half a cup of organic brown coconut sugar, half a cup of organic extra virgin coconut oil (melted), and one tablespoon of organic ground cinnamon. Put all the ingredients in a jar and combine – et voilà! And if you want to leave your coffee scrub in the shower, opt for a jar that is both airtight and waterproof. For best results, use the coffee scrub every day for two weeks while you’re in the shower. Rub it on and scrub in circular motions, especially in the areas you want to work on, always scrubbing towards your heart. Leave it on for roughly five minutes before you rinse it off your body. t’s the most wonderful time of the year, yes, but it arrives after months and months that can best be described as ‘complicated’. We’ve never needed a little festive cheer more than right now. Enter: Dessange Bahrain, where the decadent packages on offer reflect exactly what its clients are seeking. I opt for the Winter Warmer package, choosing to focus on my hair and hands in preparation for the party season ahead. Because think about it: most of our faces are still obstructed, while our feet have transitioned to closed-toe shoes. But even more importantly, my hands are in dire need of a little TLC after all that hand soap and sanitiser, leaving them dry in the process. The paraffin wax treatment comes highly recommended and starts with an almond scrub that is made of salt and jojoba oil, and packed with vitamin E. Not only does this exfoliating scrub feel slightly warm upon contact, but I’m also told it penetrates deep into the skin to nourish it. In a perfect world, this step would wrap up with a hot towel being placed over the hands and arms, but as the pandemic continues, the beauty world settles for damp, cool disposable towels instead. Next comes a hydrating lotion and a mini massage with long strokes using light to medium pressure. At a time when hugs and handshakes are considered borderline taboo, can I just confess? I welcome the human touch. It’s time for the pièce de résistance of this treatment – the paraffin wax itself – so my hands and arms are placed inside extra-long disposable gloves filled with a pale, goo-like substance that’s a little on the hot side, but not uncomfortably so. Suddenly, that scene of Robin Williams dunking his face into a bowl of meringue in Mrs. Doubtfire flashes in my mind. But I digress. It’s a slightly strange sensation, but a surprisingly relaxing one. Over the disposable gloves go terry cloth gloves, and I’m left to settle back and take it easy. This is the first time in months that my hands are inaccessible, and I welcome the 15 entirely uninterrupted minutes. So this is what it’s like to not jump every time there’s an email, a text message, or a voice note from work? As the gloves are slowly peeled off and any excess wax is wiped off, everything – my hands, my nails, my cuticles, my forearms – feel softer and more hydrated than they have in ages. I’ve long known that paraffin wax is popular as it’s a natural emollient, and all that hype suddenly makes a lot of sense. The finishing touch is nail polish, of course, and I deviate from my signature sheer-white hue and go for a hint of gold sparkle instead. Expect to have this left on for about 20 minutes before it’s washed off, which brings me to the shampoo chair that I’m soon escorted to. As the vibrations move from my shoulders down to my lower back, I feel all my pent-up stress just melt away. Cico’s has always been synonymous with tradition, so it seems fitting that the restaurant has welcomed Italian duo Executive Chef Federico Allegri and his manageress wife Elisa into its family. 66

W
e are all for the perks of the job, but nothing can make us happier (especially when the temperatures are dropping!) than the staple that is Cico’s Restaurant, whilst previewing its smile-inducing Xmas Menu for extra brownie points. So, in true OHLALA fashion, we grabbed our gaggle of girls and made a beeline for the heart of Adliya. As we walked into the restaurant, the fusion of simplicity and luxury – a vein running throughout as we soon discovered – struck us immediately. The décor was minimalist, but sophisticated. The trattoria-style lighting features created a unique ambience and the wooden panelling harked back to travels of yesteryear. Wroughtiron accents and vineyard-inspired elements hanging from exposed beams and wooden flooring provided plenty of homely, atmospheric charm. Meanwhile, crisp checkered tablecloths, walls adorned with photos of customers over the years, and welcoming staff further gave an indication of the quality of things to come. Executive Chef Federico Allegri has been a force in Italian cuisine for many years. Born in Torino, he has clung to his Piedmont regional roots as an artisan chef and gains much inspiration from the rural tradition of cooking where the land and its produce dominates. It is no surprise that he has crafted his dishes, service, and presentation to such a height that he has worked alongside a cascade of Michelin-starred chefs and restaurants throughout his career, amongst other revered
culinary accolades. On a more personal note, Federico met his wife Elisa back in 2007 at a Michelin-starred restaurant while they were working for Vintage 1997 in Torino, and they’ve been inseparable ever since. She has dominated front of house throughout their love affair and upholds her reputation as the best in hospitality. Elisa’s energy is uplifting, and it effortlessly sets the tone for the remainder of the evening. Between their wealth of experience, it’s only fitting that these two lovebirds have chosen Bahrain to provide an additional dynamic to the GCC’s oldest Italian restaurant – Cico’s was established in 1978 – and embrace it wholeheartedly. As we took our seats and perused the menu, the selection of dishes was inspiring, yet reassuringly familiar. Land, sea, and air options fulfilled our desire for traditional Italian staples whilst carrying with them unique additions. We set about our evening by ordering burrata and scallops. This really set the precedent for the remainder of the

CHIC Eats menu, as we were thankful for the decadence of that burrata – the white, chewy ball oozed a creamy filling with a texture like runny ricotta when we cut it open. As for its flavour? Almost indescribable. The sweet, rich cream and curds are the essence of freshness and delicacy, yet simultaneously the most intensely milky thing you’ve ever eaten. The freshly seared scallops went down a treat, too, and the generous portions were noted with glee! The showstopper up until this point was undoubtedly the tortellini. No normal mind would be able to envisage such flavours being such a culinary triumph for the palate. The freshly made tortellini casing cradled the parmesan beautifully, while the freshly imported shavings of white truffles from Alba (Tuber Magnatum Pico) provided an additional symphony to the dish. We’d be remiss not to mention the smoked salmon with fennel, which proved a worthy competitor as it was balanced with a myriad of delicate flavours that allowed its flesh to melt in your mouth, with the skin providing a crispy accompaniment.
One of the things that most frustrates Italians about non-Italians is their inability to treat pasta as anything other than a main dish. It is designed to fit seamlessly between a starter and main course of either meat or seafood. At Cico’s, the inspirational pasta and risotto dishes inject age-old traditional staples with a touch modernity. However, the core techniques and tastes lie firmly rooted in Italian heritage, all executed in a manner reminiscent of a homely farmhouse kitchen or – in our case – a beloved eatery. The Pumpkin Risotto with Scallops was nothing short of amazing as we lapped up each morsel of plumped rice, each grain infused with all the ingredients that Chef Federico had nurtured it with. As our secondi piatti arrived, the aromas that rose from our platters caused us all to inhale a little more deeply. The presentation of turkey with all the trimmings and hearty mashed potato had us sitting around the table in silence, only to be broken by the occasional oohs and aahs. One of 68

our dining companions was a vegan, and she was elated that there was a Butternut Squash Wellington main course for her to feel like she was part of the festive celebrations. I’ve never seen her so quiet either and, after some playful jesting across the table, she implored me to try it. “Wow, I was not expecting that,” pursed through my lips. This place really does cater to all, which is such a blessing, especially when it comes to catering to everyone across December! Speaking of which, reservations are highly recommended to secure yourself and your family a table this Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Cico’s also has a Festive Party Menu running until December 23 with a key selection of signature dishes for you to enjoy. The conclusion to dinner arrived in the form of a drinks cart, with espresso muddled drinks to elevate the party experience – again, a true mouthful of Italian heritage. The interactive element of tableside after-dinner drinks was special, to say the least. I felt I would struggle to walk to the car after this plethora of culinary expertise, but I have no regrets. Cico’s festive menu is a journey of self-discovery. There was something new to taste with every bite, and I don’t care how cliché that sounds. When you audibly gasp at the sight of what’s put in front of you, you know it’s one of those experiences you’ll remember forever – it’s no wonder the restaurant is revered across Bahrain. Whether you’re a carnivore, vegetarian, or vegan, let Cico’s welcome your family into theirs.

ach and every time we at OHLALA get the opportunity to test drive a new BMW model, we cannot help but get excited. This is because each and every time we have had the privilege to do so, we’ve been thoroughly impressed by what this automotive giant has had to offer. This month, we were presented with the chance to put the new BMW 4 Series 430i Coupé through its paces by the great team at Euro Motors and, needless to say, we could not accept quickly enough. As soon as the Coupé came into view, it was obvious to see the emphasis placed on dynamic power when this car was conceived. This latest generation, sport two-seater has a robust yet streamlined design that instantly makes you want to take it out onto the road. The crisp lines of the body coupled with generously sized surfaces ensure this vehicle looks the part from every angle. At the front end, the large vertically emphasised BMW kidney grille slants forward and extends down almost to the lower edge of the front apron, reminiscent of the legendary BMW 328. At the flanks, the 19-inch, highquality, light alloy wheels give this 4 Series a powerful stance, whilst the long-extended roof and high-precision contours form a distinctive coupé silhouette. A highlight of the side views are the sculptured rear wheel arches that emphasises the athletic shoulder line. Reinforcing the sporty look of the new 4 Series are the narrow L-shaped rear lights, shapely rear apron, diffuser insert and twin taillights. Once inside the cockpit, we were hugely impressed with the layout and high-quality materials used in this driver-focused cabin. The premium feel of the entire interior exudes class and sophistication. From the ultra-comfy sports seats to the newly designed sports leather steering wheel, it is obvious that BMW has spared no expense when it comes to the interior design of this new coupé. The prominent centre console combined with the harmonious design of the instrument panel and door panel trim creates an all-encompassing and modern environment. Additionally, an acoustic glass windshield has been installed as standard that ensures a far quieter and more pleasant drive for both occupants. The magnificence of the new BMW 4 Series Coupé is further enhanced by intuitive operation as well as the innovative digital services provided by the BMW operating system 7.0. This system allows for display content to be individually configured, whilst the intuitive multimodal interaction between driver and vehicle can take place via the Control Display’s touchscreen, the iDrive Controller, the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel as well as via

voice control. And if that’s not enough for you, there is also an optional BMW gesture control. We found all of these options to be novel, efficient, and user-friendly. This vehicle also supports smartphone integration through both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. As much fun as it was to go over the car’s design with a fine-tooth comb, we were all waiting for the moment the ignition was engaged – and we were not disappointed. The 430i is powered by a 258 hp, TwinPower Turbo, four-litre petrol engine that is coupled with an eight-speed steptronic transmission. This translates to a machine that can surge from 0 – 100 km/h in just 5.8 seconds and has a top speed of 250km/h. We found the handling, traction control, braking, and every other aspect of this vehicle’s performance to be almost perfect in nature. We always felt in complete control of the driving experience and received our fair share of envious glances whilst out on the road. Truthfully, a smoother ride would be hard to find. BMW has also included a wide array of safety features to ensure the safety of you and your loved ones. These include Steering and Lane Control
Assist with extended functions, Lane Change Assist, Emergency Stop Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Park Assist, airbags and so much more. Once again, we were highly impressed by BMW’s latest offering and we can only encourage all those searching for a premium, mid-size coupé to consider the 2021 4 Series 430i Coupé.

I’M THANKFUL FOR... MISS OHLALA LOOKS TO FIRSTGRADERS FOR INSPIRATION AS 2020 DRAWS TO A CLOSE. You’ve made it – not just to the end of the magazine, but also the year. Well done. 2020 will go down in history for so many reasons, most of them unpleasant. As several countries worldwide enter a second lockdown and we celebrate the festive season on a slightly more sombre note, the order of the day is gratitude. If you’re reading this closing note, it means you’re safe and healthy, but we can’t say the same about everyone unfortunately. Yes, gratitude amidst a pandemic can feel like a tricky endeavour, but maybe we can take a cue from first-graders? A local newspaper in the state of Minnesota asked a handful of six-year-olds about what they’re grateful for, and things like teachers, chicken nuggets, and Tony the hamster emerged as winners. One rather self-assured first-grader even replied, “Myself.” And while their simple insights are downright endearing, it’s important for us adults to take a moment to reflect on the brilliance of this simplicity. This year, we aren’t obsessing over what heels to pair with our favourite dress to the office Christmas party nor are we headed to a big glitzy bash on New Year’s Eve. Instead, we find joy in the little things: a cup of hot chocolate as temperatures drop, a virtual catch-up with an old friend, or just taking off a face mask at the end of a long day. Try to think back to these moments as you count down to 2021 and usher in a (hopefully much happier) new year ahead. 82
