The Holy Month is here and gives us a sense of internalisation and spiritualisation. It’s a good moment to look inside ourselves, care more about others and reflect on our daily lives. It’s also a period to appreciate the community we live in and the rituals that are important to us. With this in mind, we bring a selection of pages dedicated to the theme. You will find beautiful modest fashion collections, inspiring jewellery and much more. To embrace the Ramadan spirit, we went for a comprehensive Hammam and massage experience at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. If you are looking for a deep body cleanse and soft skin, this is the treatment for you. In our homes section, we talk about a space that must be versatile for its multiple functions – we uncover the trends and ideas to improve your living room.
Are you planning an Eid escape? Don't know where to go yet? We uncovered nearby destinations that can be easily booked at the last minute and are one flight away.
My Cafe is a beloved dining destination in Bahrain and we had the opportunity to check their menu at the Riffa branch. We have to say that the striking décor and innovative cuisine took us on a splendid culinary journey. Talking about journey, we drove around the island inside the new Bentley Bentayga and you can read all about this incredible motoring adventure on our Diva Drives pages.
I hope you enjoy your reading.
Eid Mubarak!
Fernanda Langhammer Editor-in-Chief @ohlalamagazine editor@ohlala-magazine.comThe Holy Month is a moment of reflection and colours play an important role during this period. We’ve selected a few hues that are frequently worn during Ramadan and Eid.
Light shades are very popular during this time for their characteristic of not standing out and blending with nature. This Nature Hedonist set in light blue is made of natural materials, which are the perfect textiles for warmer months.
According to Muslim scholars, white is the colour that makes everyone equal. These Missoni trousers will help you create a white look from head to toe.
Purple symbolises wealth, wisdom and dignity; it is also associated with twilight, the time Muslims break their fast. This Max Mara Studio top has a loose cut, which is perfect also to embrace the ethos of modest wear.
Yellow is often worn during Eid celebrations, as it represents happiness, remembrance, honour and joy. This Serapian handbag, in this vivid shade, will add a vibrant touch to your Eid looks.
The holiest colour in Islam is, without a doubt, green. You can opt for an entire verdant outfit or choose some green shoes, such as these comfortable slip-ons from Loro Piana. They are a great pick for casual gatherings with family and friends.
Forget minis or midis and add ankle-length skirts to your wardrobe. They suit taller girls best, but they can elongate the silhouette if you opt for straight cuts and darker shades. They come in an array of textiles, from knitted numbers to denim –cover your legs in style!
The iconic Ramadan Tent of Bahrain returns with buffets and live stations of oriental and worldwide cuisines for a culinary feast.
New for this year, the Premium Experience brings full table-waited service with elegant tableware, Chef’s recommended menu, and a dedicated Four Seasons Butler.
Live music during Ghabga, entertainment for kids, and special prices for groups of 30 and above are available.

Reminiscent of utilitarian clothes, pockets (a lot of them) have invaded the spring and summer 2023 collections. They come in different shapes and sizes but seem more like aesthetic elements than practical and usable ones.
The most popular fabric of all time is back (or, more accurately, has never left the spotlight). From jackets, pants, dresses and jumpsuits to handbags, shoes and hats –blue denim covers them all. But this season, they also come printed with logos and designs to add flair to such a casual textile.
Despite what many might think, sophistication has nothing to do with sparkle and golden accents. It is mostly about how you compose your looks. A laid-back style requires impeccable cut, high-end textiles and is usually made of neutral shades with some colour accents here and there – a way of standing out because of good taste and refinement rather than flashy colours and skin baring.
Sometimes all you need to put a beautiful look together is to choose the colours you mix and match wisely. We bring a selection of nude tones that look great together. Go for a toned-down outfit to blend in with our sandy landscape.
We bring exciting news from the world of fashion and velocity. This month, our roundup is all about exciting collaborations and inspirational collections.
Footwear brand Skechers partners with fashion industry icon Diane von Furstenberg to launch the Skechers X DVF collection. The capsule is a celebration of effortless style and fashion-forward creations that blends the designer's signature prints in bold colours and the unparalleled comfort technology offered by Skechers. "As a woman on the go and a passionate hiker, I'm excited to launch our collaboration with Skechers, a leader in comfort innovation," said Diane von Furstenberg. This collaboration launches with the Endless Kisses capsule featuring the timeless DVF Lips print. The range includes the Skechers Uno and D'Lites fashion sneakers, Skechers Max Cushioning Elite running footwear and a Hyper Slide recovery sandal. A tee, leggings, shorts and a racerback longline bra complement the line. These styles easily transition from working out to hanging out thanks to comfort innovations and breathable materials, a trademark of Skechers.
If you are a fan of two-wheeled vehicles, this collection is for you! The fashion brand DSquared2 has partnered with motorcycle company Honda to create the Honda X DSquared2 capsule collection as part of its SS2023 men’s creations. Capturing the outlawstyle freedom that comes with riding a motorcycle on a road that stretches for miles, the collaboration brings a biker-wear lineup detailed with Honda’s iconic winged logo. The detail comes in red or white and pairs with stripes that band around sleeves, trousers and baseball caps. One of the items is a hybrid biker-blazer with leather sleeves with printed logos. Other key pieces are a white hooded sweatshirt with a red Honda wing and lettering – also seen in a T-shirt in diverse colours. A white tank top and a slouchy raglan fit black jersey top with leather sleeves completely embellished with the Honda logos and stripes complement the collection.
The Middle East is an important market for many brands and LOEWE has launched its first exclusive Middle East collection. The capsule brings versatile ready-to-wear dayto-night items, bags and accessories crafted in luxurious silks and signature leathers. The clothing collection is composed of eight exclusive pieces and two new editions of the Puzzle Edge bag; the items come in key colours such as lilac, butter yellow and vanilla white from SS2023 runway creations. The exclusive collection includes tunic dresses, pyjama sets cut in silk and nappa leather, a sparkly lurex knitted cardigan and a vest featuring geometric patterns. Available in small and mini sizes, the special edition Puzzle Edge bag is crafted in satin calfskin leather in the exclusive butter shade, perfect for both daytime and evening looks. The accessories add a festive golden highlight with a detachable metal chain inspired by the Middle East. There is a falcon, known in the region as a symbol of strength and courage, and the iconic Arabian Oryx, an antelope native to the Arabian Peninsula.
The brand There Was One (TWO) is a joint venture between luxury retail destination Farfetch and New Guards Group, an Italian contemporary luxury fashion production and distribution holding company. This season, TWO has launched its first activewear collection for men and women. Focusing on developing pieces for training and cycling, they are made from high-performance materials with highly functional details, such as reflective piping and mesh inserts for breathability. The line was created with customers’ needs in mind by using data-driven insights on what consumers search for, combining them with fashion-forward thinking. “Since its launch, There Was One has become the brand of choice for a conscious consumer who values quality and longevity from their favourite wardrobe staples,” said Chiara Gatti, Senior Head of Category Management & NGG Digital Brands, Farfetch.
Cars and watches have an intimate relationship. Following this principle, Aston Martin and Swiss Luxury brand Girard-Perregaux partnered to create the Laureato Green Ceramic Aston Martin Edition. The timepiece’s design encompasses elements inspired by Aston Martin cars, from powerful engines to sleek contours and lightweight construction. It’s the first Laureato to feature a green ceramic case and bracelet. Aston Martin’s iconic association with the colour green began many decades ago when manufacturers raced in the hues of their country of origin, in this case, British Racing Green. Since then, the brand’s racing cars have competed in various shades of green before resting on the now-familiar Aston Martin Racing Green, which adorns its Formula 1 automobiles. Both companies operate within a world of excellence, where time-honoured skills imbue products with a distinctive character and an enduring quality, creating rare objects that confer lasting appeal. Presented in a 42mm or 38mm model, the new wristwatch is available worldwide in selected Girard-Perregaux retailers.
Embrace the spiritual period of Ramadan and Eid to connect with yourself and others while wearing beautiful outfits. We bring a selection of styles that are great picks for this time of year in the Middle East.
The Holy Month is composed of Ramadan and it culminates with Eid al-Fitr. The first is a time of reflection and spiritual connection when Muslims fast, while the second is a celebration marking the end of this period.
During this time, outfits tend to change. Even non-Muslims adhere to a more modest dress code. Pieces that cover shoulders, knees and torso in loose-fitting shapes are the best choice. Many brands have invested in creating Ramadan collections to inspire ladies to adopt a more reserved way of dressing without losing their stylish selves. Both local and well-known international brands want to cater for this audience with high-end and sophisticated products. There are many gatherings after sunset and during the Eid festivities, which usually run over three days, the garments become more elaborate and brighter colours tend to appear. We bring a selection of special collections to help you put your looks together during this holy time in the Middle East. Whether you’re looking for tailored suits, striking kaftans, modest evening dresses or luxurious loungewear, this curated selection has something for every occasion.
JALABIYAS (OR JELLABIYA) ARE A TRADITIONAL GARMENT RESEMBLING A THOBE BUT WITH A BROADER CUT, NO COLLAR AND LONGER AND WIDER SLEEVES. THEY ARE USUALLY COLOURFUL AND SOME HAVE DELICATE EMBROIDERY WORK OR SPARKLY DETAILS. THESE PIECES AND ANKLE-LENGTH DRESSES WITH LONG SLEEVES ARE WOMEN’S FAVOURITES FOR THEIR EASY-TO-WEAR QUALITY AND THE NUMEROUS PRINT DESIGNS AVAILABLE.
IF YOU DON’T REALLY LIKE DRESSES, YOU CAN OPT FOR WIDE-LEGGED TROUSERS OR LONG SKIRTS WITH A LOOSE AND LONGER TOP THAT COVERS THE HIP AREA – OR CHOOSE A SHORTER JALABIYA TO WEAR WITH PANTS. TAILORED SUITS CAN ALSO FIT WELL HERE, TOGETHER WITH LUXURIOUS LOUNGEWEAR. THINK OF SIMPLE AND STRAIGHT (BOXY) CUTS – THE EYE-CATCHING DETAILS LIE IN PRINTS, FRILLS OR EMBELLISHING ELEMENTS.
Taking care of you is easy as a member at Dar Wafa. Whether you are looking to change your lifestyle or just want to start feeling and looking better, membership is our commitment to supporting your health and happiness.
INSTEAD OF CHANGING YOUR WARDROBE ENTIRELY, YOU CAN CHOOSE KAFTANS OR TUNICS TO WEAR ON TOP OF YOUR REGULAR CLOTHES. KAFTANS ARE OFTEN WORN AS A COAT OR OVERDRESS WITH LOOSE, MEDIUM-TO-LONG SLEEVES AND REACHING THE MID-CALF AREA, WHILE TUNICS AREN’T TYPICALLY OPEN AND ARE MADE OF LIGHTWEIGHT FABRICS. JUST LIKE THE JALABIYAS, THEY COME IN AN ARRAY OF DESIGNS AND TEXTILES, ALLOWING YOU TO MIX AND MATCH ACCORDING TO YOUR TASTE AND PREFERENCES. THEY COME IN SOLID COLOURS OR ARABIC DESIGNS IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A MORE INTERESTING OPTION.
THIS HUE REPRESENTS NATURE AND LIFE; IN ISLAM, IT ALSO MEANS PARADISE. IT IS BELIEVED THAT PROPHET MOHAMMED (PBUH) FREQUENTLY WORE A GREEN CLOAK, WHICH WAS HIS FAVOURITE COLOUR (ACCORDING TO MUSLIM SCHOLARS). THERE ARE MANY TONES OF GREEN, BUT EMERALD AND SHAMROCK ARE POPULAR ONES TO COVER DRESSES, JEWELLERY PIECES, HANDBAGS AND FOOTWEAR. IF YOU ARE NOT ACCUSTOMED TO THE CULTURE AND GET INVITED TO A LOCAL GATHERING OR JOIN ONE OF THE MANY IFTARS, GHABGAS AND SUHOURS AVAILABLE AT HOTELS, PICK A GREEN FLOWING NUMBER OR ACCESSORIES TO COMPOSE YOUR LOOK.
Chopard is well-known for its Happy Jewellery collections, and there is no one better to represent the brand than the owner of one of the biggest smiles in cinema – Julia Roberts.
Hollywood star Julia Roberts has been the face of Chopard’s Happy Sport and Happy Diamonds collections since 2021, but now she has become the global ambassador of all the maison’s women’s watch and jewellery lines.
To celebrate this special bond, Chopard and Julia Roberts are combining their shared love of cinema through a campaign directed by James Grey comprising 12 video clips. The director has captured all the audacity, playfulness and humanity that make the actress a contemporary icon. The films are accompanied by a new advertising campaign featuring visuals by photographer Alasdair McLellan.
Julia Roberts has one of the most beautiful and famous smiles in cinema and, according to the luxury brand, it embodies everything that makes Chopard unique such as virtuosity, joie de vivre and feel-good spirit. This positive energy spreads like a wave, giving women confidence in themselves. The pieces extend this enjoyment of life, exuding a radiant sparkle. Regarding the films, James Gray captures the famous, generally unseen, backstage glimpses that are an integral part of a movie set in the latest Chopard Loves Cinema campaign. It shows the actress in action, joking around off-camera, spreading her joy and larks. She knits, finds something nice to say about everyone, slips into trainers under her glamorous dresses, takes over the camera herself and interrupts her script rehearsal to cuddle her dog Myrtle, who jumps on her lap.
“After our Happy Diamonds campaign directed by Xavier Dolan in 2021, which featured a mesmerising and twirling Julia Roberts illustrating the pure, immediate and communicative happiness at the heart of Chopard’s spirit, this new series broadens the spectrum of the initial momentum,” says Caroline Scheufele, Chopard’s Co-President and Artistic Director. “We are revealing a new facet of our identity, the feel-good vibe: the self-confidence instilled by Chopard jewellery or watches, reverberating in the air and infusing the entire surrounding universe with positive energy.”
Chopard collections are available at Chopard Boutique, Moda Mall. For more information, please call 1752 0088.

Ramadan is a period of reflection, and Messika has created a special campaign to celebrate the spirit of the Holy Month.
The French jewellery brand Messika has created a unique bond with the Middle East, a place that holds special meaning for Valérie Messika and her family. To celebrate the spirit of Ramadan, the maison has created a campaign to pay homage to the women of the region. “The Middle Eastern women are some of the most inspirational I have encountered,” said Valérie. “They possess strength and softness in equal parts and have a quiet sense of determination that enables them to pursue success in a manner that is authentically their own.”
Three empowered Arab women of diverse backgrounds and personalities were chosen to star in this introspective session.
Saudi tennis player Yara Alhogbani was invited alongside Emirati designer Mariam Al Remeithi and Kuwait-based Lebanese actress Laila Abdallah. In an intimate and private setting, the women were adorned in iconic pieces from Messika’s fine and high jewellery collections.
Yara is the first female tennis player to represent Saudi Arabia professionally at an international level. Young, dynamic and energetic, she possesses a magnetic appeal that ignites and inspires, just like the maison’s signature diamonds. Displaying similar determination, Mariam started pursuing her passion for clothing design in childhood. The fashion designer has trailblazed her path to Paris, innovating and recalibrating benchmarks in a manner that is symbolic of Messika’s visionary designs. A well-known figure in the region, Laila has a multi-faceted and playful personality, attributes inherently ingrained within the values and sensibilities of Messika’s DNA.
The maison also released, for the first time, the Move Noa bangle in full pavé – available in all three gold colours. The bangle can be worn alone or stacked for a more fashionable look. It has a perfect positioning on the wrist and can be swiftly taken off and put on. The symbolism of the three diamonds at the centre of the bangle refers to: I was, I am, I will be (the woman I was yesterday, the woman I am today and the woman I will be in the future). @messikajewelry
Scents play an essential role in the Middle East, mainly during Ramadan, when traditions become more evident than ever. Most women wear something lighter during the day with floral notes, while in the evening, they opt for stronger fragrances with warm spices, amber and musk ingredients. Be inspired by our selection to pick your Holy Month bouquet.
The beauty world has welcomed a new mascara, Les Yeux Noirs Lift Ultima is Christian Louboutin’s latest launch.
Christian Louboutin is a master of shoemaking and his beauty line follows his passion for footwear. Inspired by the brand’s dizzying 26cm tall ballet shoes, Ballerina Ultima, the new Les Yeux Noirs Lift Ultima mascara offers the same vertiginous length to lashes.
Mascara is a popular eye make-up item and the Lift Ultima offers a wand-like brush that promises to give 3D length and extension to your lashes. The high-performance product intends to frame the eyes to deliver intensity to the look, curling and defining the lashes. The slim silicon brush grips and glides with its irregular nylon bristles from the roots to the tips. Even the shortest wisps of hair can be lengthened with a precise application –it thickens and coats them in a glossy, deep black lacquer.
The formula is enriched with pansy extract to condition and nourish. It offers a longlasting effect with a 12-hour resistance against humidity and heat. It also assures to be smudge-proof and flake-free.
Capped in Christian Louboutin’s signature studs and high-shine black architectural motifs, the case is like a magic wand that intensifies the eyes instantly. With art-deco influences, the black-brass casing has an eye-catching design.
Many fashion brands have entered the beauty world, and Dries Van Noten – the Belgian label – has recently jumped on this bandwagon. After putting together more than 100 fashion shows, Dries Van Noten knows beauty. Working with leading hair and make-up creatives, his catwalk performances have always featured bold beauty statements. The perfect balance of elegance and surprise is Dries’ makeup signature. Lipsticks are the first products launched as an introduction to the brand’s vision in this field. They will be followed by a complete collection for face, eyes and nails, representing the world of impossible combinations unique to Dries Van Noten.
For this brand, make-up isn’t just about the result; the gestures, rituals and application tools are as important. Dries understands the concept of a desire-inspiring object. Falling in love with a lipstick starts with the case and continues with the colour inside, how it feels on the lips, its scent, ingredients and visual effect.
Four refillable cases combine endlessly recyclable Zamak metal in clashing top and bottom prints inspired by fabrics from the fashion collections. The cases open to reveal a choice of 30 colours in satin, matte and sheer finishes and one clear balm. The formula features rosehip oil to care for the lips. Together with the lipsticks, the brand has also created various accessories, such as lip brushes, mirrors, combs and pouches.

For a classic Hammam and luxurious massage experience, Liz O’Reilly visited The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay.
It’s always a pleasure to arrive at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, the turnoff from the highway is like entering a mini other world of luxury and pure indulgence. As I arrive at The Spa reception area, which will be renovated during Ramadan, I’m offered a refreshing warm, lemon-scented towel and a delicious cold-pressed detox drink of pineapple, apple, cucumber and mint which I sip gratefully (after the early-evening traffic) as I use an iPad to fill in a fairly comprehensive health questionnaire. It also allows me to select my choice of massage pressure and even music – I go for nature sounds but there’s a wide variety, including guided meditation.
I’m led down hushed corridors where ochre-hued terracotta floor tiles perfectly complement cool cream décor with Oriental touches to give a feeling of traditional hospitality. Passing the Jasmin Lounge, with its comfortable seating and array of fruit waters and teas, I’m tempted to just settle in and relax but, of course, I’m also eager to partake of my treatment.
For this Indulgent Hammam experience followed by the Ceremonial Massage, my therapist will be Ilham, who is herself from Morocco and is very well-versed in the secrets and intricacies of the ancient Hammam rituals. The products to be used are all from the luxury French brand marocMaroc except for the traditional black soap, which is made from olives.
Entering the Hammam area, I am delighted by the design. Walls are covered in tiny, sand-coloured tiles, reminiscent of our desert landscape and, above two marble plinth beds, a convex ceiling is dotted with blue and green lights, sparkling like stars in the dusk sky.
I settle in the 38-degree heat, allowing the warmth to open my pores before Ilham washes me down with warm water and applies the precious black soap in circular movements, its scent slightly acrid yet happily familiar. She follows this with a very gentle face scrub and calming mask and I am left to lie in the luxuriant heated steam for around 10 minutes.
Ilham returns and begins to scrub with the Kessa – a special, rough-textured exfoliating glove which has been used in Hammams for centuries – to remove dry skin and impart a deep clean. I must admit that, though I love how Hammam makes my skin feel, I am not overly keen on this aspect and I’m glad that the expert therapist is receptive to my plea for lighter pressure.
Then a body mask made from brown sugar, argan oil and honey is slathered on my skin and I am smoothly covered to allow the heat to work its magic as the rich mask gently lifts any remaining impurities. At the same time, my face is treated to a cooling mask and I lie in the heat for another few minutes.
Ilham returns and shampoos my hair and applies an argan oil hair mask. After which it’s time for a shower milk rinse. It’s poured from a beautiful big, ornate jug and is cool to close my pores. Thankfully, Ilham warns me in advance, but I still jump in shock as the cold water hits my skin and we both laugh.
Following the Hammam, I rest for a few moments with water and lemon and mint, then we move into the massage room where I lie face-down on a super-comfortable padded bed – a
rose beneath the face opening is a nice touch – and Ilham gets to work with a luscious body palm containing eucalyptus and shea butter. Perfect, I can almost feel the relief as my thirsty skin drinks in the nourishing mixture. Working from side to side, she uses the moderate pressure I have requested, kneading and stretching my limbs and paying particular attention to my mid back, ankles and feet. Though these are my main areas of concern, she also gently releases the knots in my neck and shoulders and with her assured strokes my muscles relax and an all-over feeling of well-being engulfs me like a warm embrace.
All too soon, it is time for this joyous experience to draw to a close but not before I luxuriate in the dimly-lit relaxation area, reclining with a delicious warm lychee infusion and juicy dates to revive me.
I return to the spacious changing rooms and grab my clothes and, slightly bizarrely, I feel the urge to stroke my skin. I’m miraculously silky-soft and greatly hydrated. Even my hair is immediately displaying the benefits of the argan oil with a marked improvement in texture and body that I couldn’t have predicted. If you want to try the Indulgent Hammam for yourself, The Spa has a special offer throughout Ramadan of 30% off on all à la carte Hammam and massage experiences.

Purificacion Garcia is a Spanish fashion brand named after its founder and designer. Purificacion started her career in the field at a fabric company in the 1970s and has now conquered the world with her contemporary aesthetic and effortless creations. The brand’s main inspirations come from geometry, art and food.
Middle Eastern women love her designs for their impeccable cuts and sophisticated materials that are perfect for the weather in this region. To help them celebrate the Holy Month, the brand created a special collection for Ramadan and Eid.
Their signature colour-blocked tones are applied in voluminous silhouettes with luxurious and delicate fabrics that include elevated chiffons, satin and taffeta for more festive gatherings. While softer and more comfortable options, such as lightweight cotton and linens, are used in less formal pieces that seek functionality beyond their stylish aspect. Wide dresses in solid shades and floral prints also stand out in the capsule. The concept of volume can be spotted in the sleeves and on the waist.
The collection is paired with the brand’s iconic accessories, highlighting metallic finishes and weaves that define the Homenaje, Alcolchado and Soho bags – the ideal items to carry from Iftar to Suhour and even gift-giving for your loved ones.
This month, OHLALA had the pleasure of speaking to Elham Hassan, Board Member at Mumtalakat Holding Company and Chairperson at Taaheal Healthcare. She shares her wisdom and love for life with us.
OHLALA - You have been working in decision-making areas as chairperson and board member of many different companies for some time. A career filled with big responsibilities. What made you follow this professional path?
Elham Hassan - My parents instilled in me a sense of duty and responsibility towards my younger siblings and society. As I grew up, this translated into a desire for leadership in order to showcase what women, all women, are capable of when given the right opportunities. Over time and as my career evolved, I took it upon myself to invest in leadership areas where there was a lack of female representation. I am also a mother, and it was uncommon to see role models like myself in this type of position. I wanted to be that example for my daughters and other girls as well.
OHLALA - What is the aspect of this job that you like most? And what are the biggest challenges?
Elham Hassan - I enjoy many aspects of my career: working with highly talented individuals, helping companies grow, training younger professionals and allowing them to follow their dreams. I also quite enjoy travelling for work and learning about new cultures. I’ve learned something from everywhere I visited. A challenge for me has always been balancing my work demands with my role as a mother and now grandmother to five lovely children. Thankfully, I have been able to make space in my life to be present for my family while pursuing my professional goals.
OHLALA - What projects have you been involved in that you feel most proud of participating in?
Elham Hassan - There have been countless moments in my career where I have felt proud of the outcomes I accomplished and the people I worked with. In particular, I feel a sense of pride in being a board member in entities where strategic decisions are made for my country. I was a board member of the Economic Development Board in the past, and now I am a member at Mumtalakat.
OHLALA - What kind of characteristics and skills should someone have to perform well in this field?
Elham Hassan - A lot! Humility, hard work and discipline are key to achieving your goals. It is also important to be open-
minded and approach every conversation and decision with a collaborative objective. The essential part of leadership is to listen so that you can make the best decision for the situation.
OHLALA - As a businesswoman, how important is having women in positions like yours? How significant is it to have this kind of representation?
Elham Hassan - Women comprise half of the population, so they should make up half of all leadership positions. However, many constraints still exist for women. Societal expectations, motherhood and other factors still mean that many women choose to forgo high-paced careers. I tried very hard to meet my social and family obligations while also aiming for my highest professional goals. I hope this is an example for all girls that they can ‘have it all’ – it’s hard but worth it!
OHLALA - What advice would you give to other women starting to climb their professional ladders? Any piece of wisdom that you can share?
Elham Hassan - The time is here for women to shine. Globally, regionally and, more importantly, locally. There is focus and attention to empowering women and recognising the qualities of female candidates. They are better placed to achieve their potential than ever before. So, aim high. Plan strategically and go after your goals. I would say, as advice: your dream should be yours and not someone else’s. Work towards that dream, not what others envisage for you.
OHLALA - What do you like to do during your free time?
Elham Hassan - Travelling is my passion. I would love to visit everywhere in the world and learn about all cultures. I am also blessed to have one of my daughters living abroad, so I get to spend time with her and my granddaughter exploring amazing destinations.
OHLALA - What aspect of Bahrain do you like most?
Elham Hassan - I love everything about my country – the warmth of the people, our traditions, our food. There is so much to love! If I had to choose one thing, it would be our diversity. We have so many people from different backgrounds and we all come together in our love for one country. We learn from each other and grow.
“I would say, as advice: your dream should be yours and not someone else’s. Work towards that dream, not what others envisage for you.”
– Elham Hassan
@mumtalakat @taahealth
Our home is our sanctuary where we feel safe and relaxed. But it is also a place for entertainment – alone or with family and friends. And which is the best space to do it? The living room.
We might not give the deserved value to the living room in a home, but this space has great importance. It needs a certain level of versatility to work as a formal area to receive guests but also operates as a casual space for leisure and family time. Architect and interior designer Elias Nader from EN Interiors says: "The living room is the most important space in the house beside the bedroom and the most used space in a house on a daily basis.”
During Ramadan, this room tends to be more populated with the many gatherings during the Holy Month and Eid celebrations. We look more closely at it to better understand how to choose the right elements to make it cosy and functional.
One undeniable aspect is that it is a place to sit and spend some time, formally or casually. How you choose and position the seating elements is quite crucial. But to select the best combination of sofa + armchair + ottomans, you need to identify the primary purpose of your living room. Despite being a space with many functions, one stands out, and you should stick to it.
If it is mostly dedicated to movie nights, browsing your smartphone or if you enjoy the old habit of sitting in the living room to read, then you should opt for large sectional sofas. They are spacious and year after year, designers are coming up with items that are more similar to beds where you can easily fall asleep. The Italian brand Minotti is an authority on the subject and has many interesting options.
However, if the key purpose of your living room is to host guests, opt for some differentiated seating solutions. A popular option is to have two sofas with a coffee table in between, an armchair, a pouffe and ottomans to create a pleasant space to encourage conversation and help it flow. An arrangement where guests can easily interact, close enough to hear each other and with handy coffee tables in the centre of the space plus a few accent tables at the corners for people to happily chat and sip their cups of coffee at the same time. An important aspect to consider is not to crowd the space and leave enough room for visitors to move around. But that doesn’t mean pushing everything against the wall; create a nice flow with the elements to make it enjoyable and exciting. When it comes to decorating the room, Elias says that its character must reflect the personality of its user – mainly in terms of colours. “We always suggest that if the owner likes dark hues, to always keep them on the wall behind the sofa or somewhere they won’t be facing for long hours. We advise using light colours in the background of the TV unit for a comfortable scenery while binge-watching their favourite shows,” he explains.
Regardless of the purpose, the space needs to be cohesive. To achieve that, choose similar styles, but play with variation and texture to build an engaging atmosphere. When we say similar, it doesn’t mean matching everything. You should actually be careful with sofas and other seating coordination; make sure they are not too unified in colours, fabric and styles; otherwise, you risk having a flat space that will look like a furniture shop catalogue.
The easiest way to unite without looking boring is to make good use of colour. Follow the rule of 60-30-10, where 60% of the objects have a predominant shade, repeating it on many surfaces, such as walls, tiles, rugs and sofas. You then add contrast in 30% of the space using a different hue; you can apply it to pillows, throw blankets, art and small tables. And last, with the 10%, go bold! Choose a vivid tone to create funky accents and add personality to your space. Often, this addition can be done by applying a metallic surface to many details like handles, coffee table legs, accessories and lighting.
There is an element often dismissed, but that makes all the difference: the rug. This décor item can play a central role in a room. It is a piece that puts together all the different compositions. But remember, the carpet needs to be as big as possible. Ideally, all the seating elements and coffee tables
should sit on it. However, if not possible, putting the front legs of your sofa on top of the rug is an good solution. Another aspect to look at is the lighting. The best way to cater to the room’s different functions is to display the lighting on three levels: a leading chandelier, wall lights and lamps. The latter help create a soft ambience. LED strips and indirect lighting in alcoves can add elegance to the area and enhance the beauty of bookcases, furniture or decorative items. If you like art, remember that the bigger, the better and that the painting’s centre needs to be installed at eye level and preferably 20 centimetres above furniture, such as consoles and sofas.

Your choices could range from relaxing on a sunny beach, an awe-inspiring break exploring nature or taking in a novel cultural experience.
Here are some of our picks for a quick break during the Eid holidays to make this festive season a memorable one.
Jordan’s vibrant capital Amman is a great choice; from its breathtaking natural landscapes to world-renowned historical and religious sites, this destination is a part of the Middle East waiting to be uncovered. Discover stories of the past as you visit museums and explore ancient Roman ruins, such as the Amman Citadel, on a historic site that dates back to the Bronze Age. It is surrounded by a 1,700m-long wall and the site includes the iconic Temple of Hercules and the Umayyad Palace. Within the citadel are also the ruins of a sixth-century Byzantine Church and the Jordan Archaeological Museum.
Another famous landmark of the city is the Roman Theatre which was built in the second century AD. The modern-day restored version of the theatre is cut into the side of a hill, has a seating capacity of 6,000 people, and hosts many important cultural events and concerts. Travellers can also visit the famous Al-Husseini Mosque, Amman’s oldest mosque and the first major architectural landmark of the Jordanian Kingdom. On the other hand, Amman has several wonderful souqs spread throughout the city where visitors can find traditional clothes, art pieces, decorations and all kinds of colourful trinkets. Some of the best are Souq Jara, Souq elSagha and Souq Mango. Rainbow Street is another famous city hot spot where tourists can experience a great time, be it nightlife, entertainment or delicious meals at various cafes and restaurants with plenty of hip coffee places and charming restaurants with amazing views. Amman is one of the best places to indulge in traditional Arab dishes like falafel, mansaf, baklawa and kunafa (a sweet cheese pastry), amongst many others.
The tropical climate, beautiful beaches and incredible food of Goa are some of the many reasons that make this smallest Indian state a wonderful place for a quick escape. The capital city is Panaji; however, the state is so small that it is treated like one big city.
Travellers can kick off their vacation by checking out sites that embody the history and culture of Goa. Among the best ways to do so is by visiting the many churches, forts and museums spread across this charming region. One of the most famous is the Basilica of Bom Jesus; the church was built in 1605 and is located in Old Goa. It showcases a remarkable architectural style and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The main draw to this destination is its 103km coastline, studded with more than 30 golden-sand beaches. From the lively and bustling shore lines like Candolim, Baga, Ashwem and others in the north to the serene and more relaxed spots such as Palolem, Colva and more in the south, there’s a fit for the most discerning beach lovers. Fort Aguada is a beautiful spot to watch the sunset and is one of many historical forts. The numerous sandy shores also offer some of the most fun and exciting water sports activities for adventurous visitors, from parasailing, jet skiing and banana boat rides to even surfing at selected spots.
Food is undeniably enjoyed and celebrated fully, from tantalising seafood offerings to savoury meat and vegetarian options in local and global preparations (the Indo-Portuguese influence is a treat for the taste buds) – there’s something for everyone. Goa also has an old Latin Quarter in Panaji – Fontainhas. This gorgeous neighbourhood resembles an olden-days European town with its quaint houses built in a Portuguese architectural style. Other major draws to this area are its buzzing nightlife, amazing flea markets and night bazaars. Some of India’s best luxury resorts and wellness spas are located in Goa.
Azerbaijan’s capital and largest city, Baku, is positioned on the shores of the Caspian Sea. This beautiful city is an authentic blend of the old and new which is witnessed in its concurrent historical and modern architecture. Situated in the heart of Baku is the ancient Old City or the Walled City of Baku. Located inside is the Maiden Tower, an iconic structure built in the 12th century which, on summiting, provides an incredible view of the surrounding areas. Another unique site is the stunning Shirvanshahs’ Palace, built in the 15th century by the Shirvanshah kingdom. These three locations have been recognised as Azerbaijan’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city also includes the remarkable Bibi-Heybat Mosque. These sites are amongst the focal points of tradition, culture and history and attract travellers from around the world.
On the modern side of things are the Baku Flame Towers, a captivating addition to the skyline that’s been inspired by Azerbaijan’s long history of fire worshipping.
The popular Azerbaijan Carpet Museum showcases one of the most exquisite carpet and rug collections in the world. And the Heydar Aliyev Center is a fantastic representation of modern architecture and engineering with its distinctive fluid and curved design. The building was designed by the prestigious architect Zaha Hadid and hosts frequent cultural events and exhibitions.
Visitors can also stroll along the Baku Boulevard, a breezy promenade built along the city’s seafront, that’s popular with both tourists and locals as it includes attractions such as shopping malls, restaurants, cafes, tea houses, a Ferris wheel and much more. The capital also has streets brimming with exciting markets and food stalls, along with restaurants offering some of the country’s best culinary experiences.
Gobustan National Park, where you find the unique mud volcanoes (around 67km southwest of the centre of Baku), makes for an ideal trip out of the capital to explore the anthropological sites and the singular landscape of the area.
Located on the southern coast of Cyprus, Limassol is the second-largest city in the country. It is home to more than 10 Blue Flag-awarded beaches, ancient history, an exciting nightlife scene and amazing cuisine, making it one of the most attractive destinations on the island.
The spectacular Limassol Marina is considered one of the best and most modern marinas in the Mediterranean area. It provides for the mooring of yachts at sea and onshore. The project also includes luxury residences, commercial units and restaurants, making it a major attraction for visitors. Limassol boasts must-visit beaches such as Kourion and Governor’s. For those travelling with kids, Fasouri Watermania Waterpark is among the area’s most fun things to do. For history buffs, Limassol has a lot to offer including the famous Kolossi Castle, built in the 13th century and one of most important fortresses from the Frankish period in Cyprus. The archaeological remains of Kourion, a significant ancient city, are perched atop a hill with fantastic sea views. Visitors can also indulge in tasty traditional Cypriot food with elements from Greek, Turkish and other cuisines but mainly based on the very healthy and nourishing Mediterranean diet.
The region is also well known for being surrounded by some of the best grape villages with breathtaking scenery where travellers can enjoy excellent choices of local grapes. If you are looking for a lesser-visited gem, Pissouri is worth a stopover. Located around 37km from Limassol, the tranquil beach is the perfect spot for sunbathing and swimming. It consists of golden sand with a mixture of pebbles and stones. Pissouri is an idyllic place with many lovely taverns, coffee shops, pretty chapels and a historic Gothic church.
Embarking on a gastronomic journey is always very exciting. Fernanda Langhammer experienced an exceptionally flavourful trip at My Cafe.
Many restaurants claim to be inspired by different cuisines, however, finding a place that mixes them with mastery is a rare gem, and My Cafe is undoubtedly one of them. We visited the Riffa branch (with a slightly different menu from the Adliya location), which opened about eight months ago, to explore the extensive menu orchestrated by Chef Konstantinos Bouklis. Everything about this eatery exudes beauty and funkiness, from the carefully arranged outdoor seating area to the modern and tastefully decorated indoor dining space. As soon as you enter, a massive white giraffe greets you with a delicate crystal chandelier in its mouth – an artful piece that will put a smile on your face. We then took the elevator and went to the upstairs area. Right in front of us, a massive tree emerged and, on the left side, there was a semi-private area with a large table that looked like someone’s dining room. The wall had shelves with eye-catching art pieces and low chandeliers made with natural materials giving the ambience an intimate vibe. After exploring the space and soaking in its beautiful details, it was time to please our palates. The first item we tried was the Pizza al Tegamino, made with tomato sauce, cherry tomato confit, parmesan, basil, fried egg and beef bacon. In my opinion, pizza dough needs to have a crunch to it and hold the toppings well; this one didn’t disappoint – it was just perfect! You might find it uncommon to have a fried egg and beef bacon on top of a pizza, but this is where My Cafe stands out; everything is done to taste its best, and the recipes have an out-of-the-box approach. If you are looking for dishes that will challenge your senses and play with your taste buds, visiting My Cafe will take you there.
The menu is broad, and there is something to please literally everyone. But even simple dishes come with an out-of-the-ordinary element. The Crunchy Chicken Waffle, a staple breakfast in the United States, was a combination of pan-fried buttermilk chicken with maple butter and coriander sitting in one of the best waffles I have ever had in my life. The waffle was crispy on the outside and soft inside, with the right touch of sweetness. The Spinach Feteer had a light and flaky dough with the right ratio of spinach, cheese and olives. The Chicken Tikka Ravioli was probably the best example of fusion done right. The small pockets of fried ravioli dough were filled with well-seasoned chicken and curry sauce accompanied by mint yoghurt. The crunchy dumpling was an explosion of taste in our mouths and a gift to our taste buds.
Chef Konstantinos told us that they constantly add to and change the menu, but some dishes are untouchable, and the reason is not to upset regular customers – I love that! One of these dishes is the Date Salad made with rocket leaves, feta cheese, blanched almonds, caramelised dates and orange blossom vinaigrette. I believe it thrives for its beautiful balance of ingredients.
It’s important to highlight that everything cooked in the My Cafe kitchen is homemade, from the pasta dough to the pastrami, using the freshest ingredients in the market. Chef Konstantinos is also very proud of what his culinary team can accomplish by upholding high standards and quality while offering such a varied menu.
The Saffron Arancini is an encounter between East and West. The rare Eastern spice gives another dimension to this simple dish, adding a subtle earthy-sweet profile with a tinge of bitterness on the tongue to the famous Italian fried delicacy made with creamy rice. The fried disk is placed on a bed of chicken carbonara sauce made with porcini mushroom, parmesan, gruyere and hazelnut balsamic dressing, decorated with petals of confit tomato. One bite is enough to linger on your palate for a while – a dish now engraved in my food memory.
I love pasta, and the Truffle Pappardelle was scrumptious. One of the secrets of this dish is that cheese and truffle extract are added to the dough, expanding its flavours when bathed in a sauce of mushroom ragout, truffle cream and pecorino and parmesan cheese. A synchronised dance happened in my mouth, and I felt that this comforting dish had just hugged me.
If you like seafood, you must try one of Chef Konstantinos’ signature dishes: Grilled Calamari. As you probably noticed, nothing at My Cafe is as simple as it sounds. All creations come with a certain level of complexity, whether in their execution or expertise in knowing which ingredients work well together. The calamari is sun-dried and then quickly grilled, then the mountain of thin rings sits on top of a pool of miso butter sauce, raisins, pickled fennel and crispy and pureed parsley. The combination of different textures and levels of sweetness and savoury elements gives the dish its brilliance.
For meat lovers, the Short Rib Orzo was cooked to perfection – falling from the bone and melting in the mouth, accompanied by tasty orzo, a short-cut pasta shaped like a large grain of rice. The meat is braised for eight hours and seasoned with thyme, chives and beef jus, reaffirming the commitment and excellence offered. The other meat dish we tried and were very impressed by was the Afghani Lamb (a family recipe full of childhood memories), a beautiful piece of meat on a large bed of rice pilaf with roasted nuts, crispy onion and caramelised carrots. After a splendid spread of savoury morsels, we had to try some of the restaurant’s most loved desserts. The Russian Honey Cake had the perfect ratio of sponge and filling with a very light aftertaste. The San Sebastian Cheesecake was creamy and crustless, with a beautifully caramelised top; the rustic flavour and texture were spot on! But my favourite sweet was the ‘My’ Sticky Toffee Pudding, maybe because I have a thing for pudding, but this one was just incredible. The gooey cake was topped with frosted pecan, caramelised pistachios and vanilla ice cream for the perfect mouthful to end this marvellous culinary experience.
After this dining journey, I felt that there was a skilful team behind every single dish and that they deeply respected the ingredients they worked with – big applause to the whole team.
No matter if you are looking for breakfast, lunch, snack or dinner, My Cafe has it all – and more, as it will expand your food knowledge and give you an unparalleled taste adventure.

OHLALA SPENT THE DAY IN THE NEW BENTAYGA AZURE, A LUXURY VEHICLE THAT STANDS HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE MOST WOULD-BE PREMIUM SUVS.
This month, thanks to Behbehani Brothers and Bentley Bahrain, OHLALA got to experience the epitome of automobile luxury when given the opportunity to test drive the new generation Bentley Bentayga.
First unveiled in 2015, the Bentayga firmly established a sterling reputation thanks to its attractive design, impressive on-road performance, genuine off-road capabilities and bespoke specifications. The second generation Bentayga is propelling this reputation to new heights as Bentley launches its first extended wheelbase (EWB) edition.
Fortunate enough to get our hands on the enhanced Azure trim, our model exhibited extra special touches, including body-coloured lower bumper grilles and side skirts, along with Azure badging.
At the front end, the elegant Vertical Vane Grille design delivers a visually striking centrepiece, announcing the arrival of this modern SUV in a most memorable manner.
When taking in the SUV’s flanks, the extra 180mm wheelbase of the EWB edition, combined with the proud stance of the 2023 model, endows the new Bentayga with a powerful presence. This sturdy posture is underscored by the model-specific 22-inch 10-spoke wheels. The graceful yet commanding lines and curves of this luxury SUV flow effortlessly from bonnet to boot and combine with the slightly sloping roofline to form an aesthetically pleasing profile. The new Bentayga’s shapely rear end combines oval LED taillights and a unique twin dual exhaust system with integrated lip and roof spoilers, ensuring the vehicle looks as good on departure as it does on arrival.
This luxury SUV has been designed with the rear occupants firmly in mind, which is no surprise considering Bentley’s proud history of producing chauffeur-driven vehicles.
The rear cabin of the Bentayga EWB couples world-class luxury with technical innovation, showcasing craftsmanship and levels of comfort other premium vehicles can only dream of.
“The rear cabin of the Bentayga EWB couples worldclass luxury with technical innovation, showcasing craftsmanship and levels of comfort other premium vehicles can only dream of.”
In the new Bentayga, Bentley have achieved near perfection with what can only be called simplistic luxury. The brand have not attempted to overpack this SUV with countless quirky features and desperate cries for attention. Instead, they have concentrated on classy inclusions, highquality materials and attentiveness to the finer details.
The 16-way power-adjustable seating of the new Bentayga provides ventilation, five individual massage programmes and a beautiful diamondquilted design. The flawlessly symmetrical pattern of the seat back tops was achieved through digital craftsmanship and precision technology. The extended wheelbase ensures all passengers have ample legroom, while the redesigned front centre console provides improved ergonomics and functionality for the rear passengers. The rear face of the console has been extended to improve interaction with the touchscreen remote and now houses a wireless charging cradle for smartphones.
The Bentayga’s infotainment system is accessed through a 10.9-inch display and features a small rotary knob for additional control. This intuitive setup is compatible with Apple CarPlay (wireless) and Android Auto (cable). Paired with a fully digital instrument cluster, the highquality screen displays a traditional speedometer and tachometer, along with a detailed map and night vision camera.
The top-of-the-line Naim audio system proved to be one of our favourite internal features of the new Bentayga. Equipped as standard in our Azure model, the sound quality was amongst the clearest and fullest we’ve ever experienced.
As one would expect from a Bentley, the Bentayga has been equipped with a full suite of advanced safety and driver assistance features. These include, but are not limited to, crash mitigation and detection systems, ABS brakes, traction and stability control and a rear-view camera.
The Touring specification includes a head-up display, lane-keep assist, traffic assist, lane departure warning and a tyre pressure monitoring system. Dual front and rear side curtains, along with front and rear thorax bags, have also been equipped as standard on all Azure models.
The most memorable moment of our Bentayga experience was the firing up of the engine. The Bentayga EWB is powered by Bentley’s 4.0-litre, 32-valve, dual twin-scroll turbocharged V8 petrol engine. Coupled with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, this SUV delivers a supercar performance in Sport Mode, producing 542bhp and 568lb.ft of torque. This potent powertrain enables the car to surge from 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds and to achieve a top speed of 290km/h.
We thoroughly enjoyed the smooth and quiet ride delivered by this premium SUV. The ample power combined with proficient suspension and braking systems meant a superb on-road experience.
The Bentley Bentayga Azure EWB delivers an exquisite all-round experience exclusively reserved for those purchasing the upper echelons of the luxury SUV segment.
For more information or to book a luxury test drive of your own, please call Bentley Bahrain on 1745 9111.

Eid means festival or feast and there are two of them. Eid alFitr marks the end of Ramadan, the Holy Month of fasting, and is celebrated during the first three days of Shawwāl, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar (Muslims use a lunar calendar, which means that it may fall in any season of the year). Eid al-Adha is the feast of sacrifice, charity, gift-giving and festive meals and usually falls a little over two months after Eid al-Fitr.
With these celebrations in the near future, we wonder about the importance of rituals in our daily lives from a societal aspect. According to the UNESCO website, social practices and festive events structure the lives of communities and groups. They are significant because they reaffirm the identity of those who practise them, whether performed in public or private. They can have a religious meaning, help to mark the
passing of the seasons or stages of a person’s life. According to psychologists, rituals help us experience stability and continuity; they give us a feeling of trust in life’s flow and forward movement. They can also help us connect with our roots and ancestors and have a sense of belonging –being part of something bigger than ourselves.
Some common ceremonies are birthdays, marriages and funerals, but also some group activities. This means that Friday lunches and dinners for Muslims and Sunday dinners with family, which are popular in western countries, also fall into this category.
No matter what rituals you keep in your life, they are an essential aspect of a healthy lifestyle. They mark the beginning, the journey or the end of something. Don’t dismiss them; own them and commemorate them with others.
