Exclusive Edition
Cartier has launched an exclusive pen and cufflinks in Qatar. The special pieces pay tribute to the colours present in the country’s flag – burgundy and white. The Santos-Dumont de Cartier ballpoint pen is an icon in the brand’s collection. In this limited edition, the pen comes in brushed metal, burgundy lacquer and palladium-finish detailing. The Santos de Cartier cufflinks limited edition comes in sterling silver, palladium-finish detailing and burgundy lacquer. The ever-changing motif on the set flaunts the zigzag in the Qatari flag design. The burgundy lacquer is highlighted by white quartz cabochon, a stone with a calming and energising virtue. The pen and cufflinks set showcases inlaid lacquer to enable cross-selling and a palladium finish that enables long-lasting brightness over time. Strong Santos codes, such as the screw in the centre of the cufflinks and the nut on the pen cap ring, are featured in this exclusive line.
Gorgeous Gems
A new jewellery line named Al Tawash Ready-to-Wear has been launched in Qatar. The line features natural pearls in stunning necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings that fit any occasion and cater to a younger clientele. Al Tawash is the historic term given to pearl merchants. The jewellery line integrates pearls collected over decades with precious stones, such as diamonds, into timeless, elegant and contemporary pieces. Each item preserves the heritage and cultural significance of natural pearls in the region while responding to the latest trends. Celebrating the reveal of the new jewellery line, Hussain Ibrahim Alfardan, Chairman of Alfardan Group, said: “Pearls are the symbol of our past, we are currently in the present and today’s generation is our future. Natural pearls have always been an important part of the region’s heritage and it’s our responsibility to keep their legacy alive.”
Motoring Meets Fashion
The luxury car brand Rolls-Royce launches Cullinan – Inspired by Fashion, two prêt-àporter collections, the bold Re-Belle and the striking Fu-Shion. These exquisite creations by the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective are inspired by vibrant hues and textures seen in the world of high fashion. Each collection includes two interior colourways defined by iconic accent colours: Lime Green or Peony Pink for Re-Belle and Mandarin or Forge Yellow for Fu Shion. Each interior style can be paired with one of two carefully selected exterior looks – either eye-catching or more discrete and understated. “With Cullinan – Inspired by Fashion, we drew inspiration from the world of our patrons – individuals with eclectic tastes who define trends and influence current movements in the fields of art, fashion and design,” says Celina Mettang, Bespoke Colour and Material Designer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.
Funky Designs
MAX&Co. has launched the latest chapter in its spring and summer 2023 &Co.llaboration series, a partnership with Bandai Namco Europe S.A.S., the company behind the ‘90s fever: the Tamagotchi. Conceived in Japan in 1996, this interactive digital pet and egg-shaped device quickly became a global phenomenon. The Tamagotchi in Paris capsule combines the nostalgia of the ‘90s with typical French style, with playful figures and pixelated graphics applied in eye-catching pieces such as the Breton tees and berets. Beaded and embroidered characters and motifs – including hearts and the Tamagotchi itself – appear across the collection, bringing a twist to tailored cotton shirts and indigo jeans. ‘Eat, sleep, repeat’, the simple instructions for looking after these toys, decorates the back of tees, the front of slouchy sweaters and jacquard collars. The &Co.llaboration capsules are a celebration of the MAX&Co. ethos of togetherness – an ongoing part of the brand’s story.
TV Series Inspired
The footwear brand Malone Souliers has launched The Emily in Paris collection, a collaboration with the romantic comedy television series created by Darren Star for Netflix. Set and filmed in Paris, the series stars Lily Collins as an aspiring marketing executive. Emily in Paris is a show about style, with each key character’s personality communicated through the clothes they wear. Emily is a brand-new shoe silhouette set apart by a striking bow and available in a number of iterations, from evening-ready black and white satin to whimsical pink gingham. Camille is inspired by the character of the same name and Emily’s confidante and guide to all things French. Taking Camille’s elegant personal style as a starting point, the shoe is graceful and purposeful in its shape, with a large, crystallised heart motif on the toe. Mindy, named after Emily’s closest friend and fellow outsider to the Parisian culture, was designed as an eye-catching number embellished with organza appliqué flowers across the toe. There is also a nod to the show’s male characters with a couple of timeless men’s shoes.

OPTIMISM AND DETERMINATION
This month, OHLALA sat with Aida Remach, Founder and Managing Director at AR Brand Consulting, to discuss starting a business and success.
OHLALA - You founded AR Brand Consulting in 2020. What made you start your own business?
Aida Remach - I consider myself super ambitious. I started in the media field, worked with international magazines, managed influencers and created content for personalised campaigns. I was mostly out there in the forefront, learning, doing and sharpening my skills. My love for this dynamic media industry only grew. The year 2020 was when I realised I needed to start a business of my own, so I found a niche and tried my luck.
OHLALA - You started your company in the middle of a pandemic. How did you cope with this situation and manage to grow your business?
Aida - The pandemic was a difficult time for most businesses around the world. Starting my company amidst this extra difficulty was hard, but perseverance really got me through. I decided to deal with it one day at a time. One thing about the new slow-paced, pandemic-hit life was that it gave us enough time to think through every decision. This helped me build a strong foundation. So, along with my team’s and talents’ support, the business was ready to flourish by the time the world was back on track.
OHLALA - Can you tell us more about the services you offer and how you came up with this business concept?
Aida - AR Brand Consulting is a marketing agency; we cater to various brands, businesses and public figures. Our services range from consulting at the initial point of opening a company to the final product it offers. I have been part of the media industry for a brief time, which helped me select this industry. I only had to find a niche, but with my family’s neverending support, I could take it forward.
OHLALA - What is the biggest differential that your company offers?
Aida - I like to call us an ever-evolving company. We started with basic marketing services like business consultancy and influencer management and have progressed to events and social media management. The market requires you to redesign your services constantly, and AR Brand Consulting is right there. We truly believe in our tagline – “Committed to growing your brand” – we will do whatever it takes for our clients’ businesses to rise. And I think that with the rising competition in the Qatari market, this is the only way forward. We are completely engaged with the projects we take on and make it a point to understand what we can do and what we cannot. As they say, don’t bite off more than you can chew!
OHLALA - Being an entrepreneur is not always the easiest career path. What are the biggest challenges?
Aida - Entrepreneurship brings with it a fear of uncertainty. What usually plagues my mind is this unpredictability. You want to be prepared for whatever the future brings. But, as I said earlier, I deal with my business one day at a time. The only way to battle uncertainty is not to worry about it because, come what may good or bad, the only way out of it is through it!
OHLALA - On the other hand, being the owner of your business can be very rewarding. What are your most significant accomplishments?
Aida - Personally, I take pride in the fact that AR Brand Consulting still exists. We have encountered numerous challenges and successfully managed to steer the boat in the right direction. What makes me happy
is that the company is evolving – slowly but certainly. Our clients keep coming back to us, which is the biggest positive testimonial to our services.
OHLALA - What makes you the happiest at work?
Aida - The excitement of a new client approaching us will forever be my favourite feeling. It’s the light of a unique opportunity arising. On the other hand, completing a project, whether event management or consulting, is equivalent to holding a victory cup!
OHLALA - Do you have a specific routine or mantra that you use every day to keep you motivated?
Aida - To be honest, I do not. It’s my faith that keeps me going. I believe in embracing whatever the day brings – good or bad. And whether it’s a successful or a challenging project we are facing, the one question that persists is “what’s next?”. How we decide to move forward and deal with it is the biggest concern. Maybe, that is the mantra – finding solutions and learning new lessons.
OHLALA - How do you see the importance of having women leading businesses in different fields?
Aida - I genuinely find relief and peace in the fact that more women get to embrace leadership positions. Breaking boundaries that previously held us back is freeing; it gives me comfort for the future. Although women’s representation has magnanimously increased, there is still a long way to go, but I am optimistic.
OHLALA - How do you balance your personal life and your professional aspirations?
Aida - I think balancing life and profession is a myth. I believe in prioritising. It entirely depends on the situation; I tend to give priority to where I am most needed. It’s all about managing your personal and professional life and not balancing it.
OHLALA - What words of wisdom can you share with people looking to start their own venture?
Aida - Perseverance, patience and a strong belief system are the roads to accomplishing anything in life. You have to really figure out why you want to start a business – aligning your goals can bring immense clarity and focus. There are times when you will have to make tough decisions but believe in yourself and move forward. But most of all, have fun, make mistakes, explore and learn!
OHLALA - What do you like the most about Qatar?
Aida - I’ve spent almost 10 years of my life in this country, and I can tell you one thing for sure, Qatar has evolved fast. The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. is proof! It has amazed me how beautifully it managed one of the world’s largest and most awaited sporting events, and that too with such grace. It makes me proud to be a part of this country.
“There are times when you will have to make tough decisions but believe in yourself and move forward. But most of all, have fun, make mistakes, explore and learn!”
- Aida Remach
FIERCE AND FABULOUS
These new additions to the Panthère de Cartier collection characterise skilful craftsmanship and a wild, rebellious spirit.
The Panthère has been a creative signature for Cartier since the first sighting of its distinctive markings on a watch in 1914. It graduated from abstract to figurative representation three years later when it was depicted, flanked by cypress trees, on a case gifted by Louis Cartier to Jeanne Toussaint [later appointed Director of Fine Jewellery at the maison]. An eccentric, emancipated visionary, in 1948, Jeanne fleshed out the creature in three dimensions and the Panthère has prowled the annals of the luxury brand ever since.
The latest additions to the Panthère de Cartier collection feature necklaces and bracelets that are crafted to unfold without revealing a hinge. An invisible system developed by Cartier. These flexible jewellery pieces hug the body as closely as possible thanks to their magnetic and sinuous design, just like Cartier’s emblematic animal, which the maison displays in a teasing tête-à-tête. Cartier cultivates jewellery simplicity, personified by a bangle made of yellow gold marked with octagonal black lacquer spots or white gold paved with diamonds and set with onyx spots. Its long, curved design stems from two heads of sculptural panthers with emerald or tsavorite garnet eyes. Bringing the pieces to life, the movement of the articulated Panthère necklace and bracelet is made possible by the composition of two different components crossed with two gold blades which are linked to two springs positioned in the heads of the panthers. A real challenge in terms of craftsmanship that requires the brand’s jewellers to respect the distribution of the Panthère’s spots. Each stone is encircled with small metal grains in the diamond versions to secure it. Further, using Cartier’s unique fur setting, the maison’s artisans ingeniously cut around the onyx to give the impression of the animal’s silky coat. The Panthère’s strength and desirability inherited from Jeanne Toussaint embody the jewellery creations to this day. Cartier cultivates this inspiration’s wild, sophisticated and rebellious nature through its collections.

NATURAL ELEGANCE
Jaeger-LeCoultre unveils the Rendez-Vous Sonatina Peaceful Nature series to keep track of time with a stylish twist.
Swiss luxury watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre enriches its highly coveted Rendez-Vous Sonatina series with three new exquisite timepieces that have been inspired by Asia’s centuries-long artistic tradition of depicting the natural world. Released as a limited edition of 10 pieces each, the Rendez-Vous Sonatina Peaceful Nature trilogy is a joyful ode to nature.
The watches exemplify a feminine expression of time that celebrates both precision and artistry while also showcasing the decorative crafts that Jaeger-LeCoultre has thoroughly mastered in its Métiers Rares (Rare Handcrafts) atelier: miniature-painting, lacquer work and gem-setting. The use of lacquer, with its incomparable translucence and rich lustre, draws on deep links between Asian craft and European style.
The three new watches feature different dials bearing natural symbols. In a dial of deep blue-green lacquer, a crane soars over a pine tree – a symbol of longevity, happiness and a soaring spirit. A golden-brown dial is adorned with a kingfisher bird and delicately painted branches of a red quince tree – a symbol of beauty, virtue and fidelity. And on a black dial, a vivid, orange-coloured koi fish swims beneath the gently rippling surface of a pond, framed by the branches of a willow tree – a symbol of strength, courage and perseverance.
A delicate oval-shaped ring of diamonds runs beneath the applied numerals, drawing the eye to the painted image and complementing a glittering circle of grain-set diamonds on the bezel and case. Each watch has 160 diamonds totalling 1.86 carats.
All three 38.2mm watches are crafted in 18-carat rose gold cases and powered by the finely complex self-winding Jaeger-LeCoultre Caliber 735, visible through a transparent sapphire case-back. This movement comes with a chiming complication that rings when the time passes the Rendez-Vous star and a unique day/night indicator developed specifically for the Sonatina.
Completing this elegant mix, each timepiece is embellished with an alligator leather strap that flatters the colour of the dial and is fastened to the wrist with a rose gold folding buckle.

A FANTASY WORLD
Embody a warrior princess, wearing these luxurious works of art by Fabergé, in collaboration with the award-winning television series, Game of Thrones.
Known for their exceptional jewellery, watches and objets d’art, as well as bespoke commissions for a discerning international clientele, Fabergé is a revered name in the world of jewellery. The maison, in collaboration with Game of Thrones, has launched the first in a series of unique high jewellery collections, offering connoisseurs a glittering world of fantasy – Fabergé x Game of Thrones High Jewellery Collection.
The designs borrow elements from the dramatic sets, costumes, characters and the otherworldly landscape of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. Each creation has been inspired by orphan-turned-warrior Daenerys Targaryen’s incredible journey, her passion for her dragons, her ruthless pursuit of the Iron Throne and her ability to use jewellery to reflect her power. The first chapter, called Dragon, features five designs, with each creation limited to just 10 collectible pieces. Black and red – the Targaryen house colours – are predominantly featured.
THE DRAGON EMERGES
The Flame Egg Transformable Pendant showcases skilfully designed flamelike shapes delicately set with white diamonds. A visual nod to the dragon is interwoven via the arrow-like tail, which trails from the egg. This tail can be detached, as can the egg, to create a versatile necklace. The matching Dragon Tail Earrings mimic the articulated chain of the necklace.
BREATHING FIRE
The Transformable Ear Cuff and Choker are designed in an interconnected style. A pear-cut, responsibly sourced Gemfields Mozambican ruby is set in a rose gold flame in the dragon’s mouth.
FIERCE AND FEMININE
Characterising powerful femininity, the Dragon Ear Cuff features pearcut Gemfields Mozambican rubies radiating alongside pink sapphires. The diamond spikes mimic the dragon wing wrapping around, with the dragon itself protectively arching over the ear.
CELEBRATING THE FULL REVIVAL OF THE DRAGONS
The Transformable Bracelet and Ring are an intricate and articulated creation, where a dragon wraps around the finger and then breathes gemstone set fire, which bursts into a statement bracelet. The bracelet is adorned with colourful gemstones, including Gemfields rubies, pink and yellow sapphires and brown and white diamonds. The ring and bracelet, which are connected via a chain, can be detached from each other and worn individually. @officialfaberge @alfardanjewellery

Liquid GOLD
Parure Gold complexion was first launched in 2009. Back then, it already combined the properties of make-up and good skincare. However, with the latest version, Guerlain reinvents this iconic foundation in an 85% rejuvenating skincare-based formula.
At the heart of its composition, created solely with naturalorigin skincare actives, is the white peony, showcased in every dimension from the root to the petal. The flower petal extract acts on the key factors of youth, namely: skin barrier strengthening, hydration and comfort. The root extract – a genuine radiance revealer – makes it possible to obtain an incredibly even complexion and perfect skin texture. Further, a natural-origin mineral filter effectively fights photo-ageing caused by UV rays, offering ultimate skin protection.
Enriched with a hint of 24-carat gold, Parure Gold Skin Matte foundation’s fluid, compact and cushion textures lend your skin an impeccable glow without compromising comfort – no transfer and 24-hour wear with a luminous matte finish. An array of 18 shades is available, more extensive than the previous line.
Reflecting the hint of gold in the formula is the elegant golden-capped bottle made from delicately frosted, transparent glass that is adorned by the product name in golden lettering. The launch is accompanied by the release of a kabuki brush, which presents a new application ritual. Designed ethically, with short synthetic bristles and a classy mahogany-coloured, satin-finish wood handle, it facilitates precise application for a seamless finish.

Hypnotic GAZE
Alash science expert since 1967, Lancôme merges its skin and lash care expertise to break new ground in the domain of premium mascara. Le 8 Hypnôse combines the lash-revitalising force of eight amino acids concentrated inside a 91% caring black balm, 5% shea butter and 0% wax volumising composition. With the elimination of wax, the re-engineered formula can be easily removed, with no deposit left under the eyes. Further, it’s said that you can achieve visibly strengthened and denser-looking lashes in four weeks. It also offers a solution to women’s common mascara concerns, such as lash loss at removal. The global campaign for Lancôme’s first serum-infused volumising mascara stars two house ambassadors, Amanda Seyfried and Zendaya.
The product, from formula to packaging, has been well thought out. Standing for the number of different types of amino acids, the symbolism of its namesake – Le 8 Hypnôse – is woven into every feature. Marking a design first, both the pure glass bottle and matching ergonomic brush are carved in a figure of the number eight. It also references the virtuous circularity of its 15% recycled glass; the cap is also recyclable, and the wand has a vegetal-origin fibre brush.
LASH RITUAL
Treat your lashes to this three-step luxury ritual: first, apply Lancôme’s fortifying Lash Revitalizing Serum, followed by Cils Booster XL primer for augmented length, volume and curl impact. Complete with Le 8 Hypnôse.
SCINTILLATING EYELIDS
Designed for equally effortless application yet sculpted results is the Hypnôse Nude Sculptural eyeshadow palette. Its creamy wet formula provides an easily buildable combination of highly pigmented nude shades.
Lancôme presents Le 8 Hypnôse, a unique serum-infused mascara enriched with revitalising elements for luscious, long lashes.
RESTORE YOUR RADIANCE
It’s time to heal your skin from the end-of-the-year celebrations and start afresh. Melissa Nazareth explores skincare habits and products to include in your daily routine.
There’s no denying that the festive season takes its toll on our skin; poor sleep thanks to late-night parties, dehydration from lack of water intake, poor nutrition or a diet loaded with sugar. While we don’t regret having fun and making merry, we believe balance is everything. Incorporate these skincare practices and products into your daily routine for a healthy and good-looking complexion.
NOURISH FROM THE INSIDE
Who says beauty is skin-deep? A balanced diet is the foundation of good skin. It’s not just what you wear on the outside but also how you nourish from the inside. Eating foods rich in omega-3 acids, which are present in oily fish, has a host of benefits. Omega-3 acids hydrate, retain moisture and reduce inflammation. Fatty fish is also high in vitamin E, an antioxidant, and zinc, which have anti-inflammatory properties. Other superfoods include avocados, tomatoes and bell peppers, all rich in vitamin C, which brightens your skin. Broccoli is rich in vitamin A, which is good for healing and repairing, and green tea is packed with antioxidants. You can also opt for different types of nuts and seeds that abound with zinc, vitamins and minerals.
LIQUID THERAPY
We can’t stress enough how important it is to hydrate, especially if you’re involved in some form of physical activity, which has its benefits. Drinking water helps refresh your skin, lending it a natural glow. Further, it improves elasticity – more elasticity, less chances of wrinkles, fine lines, puffiness and sagging – and fosters collagen production, offering your skin a more youthful, radiant appearance. It also maintains your skin’s pH balance. Dry skin means enlarged pores, which are easily clogged by pollutants, makeup and dirt, leading to blemishes, acne and pimples. Hydration plumps up your skin, shrinking the pores and making them less likely to clog.
MOVE YOUR BODY
The benefits of exercise on the skin are highly underrated. Physical activity improves blood circulation, which nourishes and repairs cells, causing your skin to glow and look healthy and younger. The effects continue long after your workout session, which is a plus. Exercise is also known to facilitate lymphatic circulation and drainage, which flushes toxins out of your body; the lymphatic system balances fluid levels. There are many indirect benefits, too: skin conditions such as acne, eczema, rosacea and psoriasis are triggered by stress, and exercise is a stress-buster – however, it’s not a substitute for medication. While there are studies that show these skin conditions can worsen due to excessive sweating and clogged pores resulting from exercise, it shouldn’t stop you from hitting the gym or running a few miles – nothing that a good shower and cleansing routine can’t fix.
THE HOLY TRINITY OF GOOD SKINCARE
Cleanse. Tone. Moisturise. Repeat – follow this in the morning before you leave your home and at night before you go to bed. Cleansing rids your pores of any traces of make-up, dirt, sweat and oil built up during the day. Toning removes any sneaky impurities that might have been left behind after cleansing, balances your skin, which may have been stripped of moisture during the cleaning process, and hydrates, refreshes, soothes and primes. Choose your toner based on your skin type and needs. For instance, dry skin would benefit from a hydrating, exfoliating toner and acne-prone skin from an alcohol-free toner with salicylic acid. Topical salicylic acid treats acne by unclogging pores allowing pimples to shrink, as well as reducing swelling and redness. It also helps to get rid of dead skin cells.
Moisturising is the last step. It pays off to invest in good day and night moisturisers. The former protects against UV rays and other damaging factors and the latter repairs and regenerates skin cells. Seal the deal with a final layer of sunscreen during the day – very important!
SKINCARE ADD-ONS
Under-eye creams and patches are something to swear by. The skin around the eyes is delicate and hence, the first to show signs of ageing. Using eye creams and patches twice a day helps reduce dark circles, puffiness and fine lines. Facial masks are another extra care option to have in your beauty arsenal. There are various types depending on your requirements –moisturising masks for dry skin, clay masks for oily skin, skin tightening, brightening masks and much more. Typically layered under your moisturiser, serums supplement your skin with the good stuff. These days, hyaluronic acid-based serums have become the rage. Naturally produced by our bodies, hyaluronic acid facilitates water retention and lubrication. Hyaluronic acid-based serums supplement elasticity, repair and heal, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and scars. While serums usually contain a bunch of ingredients, including topical antioxidants, retinol, hyaluronic acid, Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) and peptides, there are serums focusing on specific needs, from hydrating and brightening to reparative and renewing. A caveat: most serums can be used daily without causing any irritation to the skin. However, they have acids involved, so it’s best to consult your dermatologist before you use them, especially if you have sensitive skin.

The location is nothing short of perfect. Situated at the gateway to The Pearl at Abraj Quartier, Tower 1 – the grand tower on the right – Venue Ladies is incredibly easy to drive to. Those that don’t live on The Pearl totally avoid the traffic. For those that do live on The Pearl, it’s so close!
I’m here for the day and as a valet whisks away my car, I glide upwards to the eighth floor. The beautiful changing rooms set the tone at once. They are simply splendid, with onyx mosaic tiles covering the walls. There’s a steam room, a sauna and a Jacuzzi. Want to look like a film star after exercising? Just peek into one of the lightbulb-surrounded mirrors and ta-da. The rest of the Venue’s interior is equally funky. Clusters of pale pink flowers decorate the ceiling. The black and glossy décor of the reception includes a running track that curves sleekly past Calibre, the in-house restaurant, before zooming onwards to the gym. Oh, what a gym.
An array of Technogym machines lines the warehouse-style brick walls. There’s something for everyone: upper body; lower body; cardio; weights. Every muscle group is catered for. Will I try the pectoral fly, the calf machine, the booty builder or the leg curl? I think probably all of them. And then there are the classes. Members can choose between Core, Cardio Attack, Belly Dancing, Bootcamp, Salsation, V Aqua, and many more. I could try a different class every single day of the month.
But first I have an appointment with Nadia, the personal trainer. She’s an ex-gymnast and will introduce me to aerial yoga. It’s a combination of traditional yoga and aerial arts. It’s also the epitome of cool and so ontrend that I don’t know how to do it. But I’m in the hands of an expert, so I grasp one of the sturdy yet gossamer-like silken loops that hang from the ceiling and prepare to find out. Thirty minutes later, I’m 100% out of my comfort zone, upside down, with my legs curled around the silk fabric doing a handstand. I’ve never felt prouder. At the end of the session, I spend a few minutes ensconced in my silken cocoon, lying flat, gently swinging. As Nadia promised, it’s utterly relaxing and I’d quite happily float here all day.
Next, the Reformer. I’ve heard a lot about Pilates’ Reformers and how amazing they are, so I can’t wait to get started. Katarina is my trainer. She is knowledgeable and thorough and guides me beautifully through the workout, taking time to adjust my position so that the exercises are perfectly targeted. There are four of these shiny new machines at Venue Ladies, so you’ll never have to wait for a turn. Afterwards, I feel deeply exercised. It’s so good.
I’ve also worked up an appetite, so I stop by at Calibre to refuel. There’s so much to choose from! Gym goers can be as healthy as they like and I opt for a mouth-watering, vegetable-filled omelette (to get my protein fix) and boiled potatoes (I am really hungry).
Venue Ladies is not just about exercise, it’s about beauty and well-being too. So next, it’s time for a pedicure. I make my way past a cardio-boxing class and step outside. Wow! The outdoor pool is perfect and the view has to be seen to be believed. I look east to The Pearl and its familiar skyline, then south over the bougainvillaea glabra that roams along the edge of the pool deck. Beyond the sparkling waters of the Arabian Gulf, the West Bay shimmers in the distance. Could there be a better place to experience a pedicure? (Spoiler alert: absolutely not.) And this is not just any pedicure – after a thorough pampering and as I relax and gaze at the view, the lovely Durdona, my manicurist, dips my feet in paraffin and wraps them in towels. Afterwards, they are buttery soft.
Nestled inside Venue Ladies, there’s a quiet zone filled with softly lit treatment rooms. As lavender scents the air, my therapist Mary-Jane gives me the best hot-stone massage of my entire life. It’s soothing and relaxing. But if you’re in need of something firmer after a day of exercise, she recommends the deep-tissue or sports massage.
Over an afternoon tea featuring goodies the colour of jewels that’s delectable – yet remarkably healthy too – I chat to the charming General Manager, Imen Rezek. She explains that Venue Ladies has a women-only membership of around 900 and climbing, aged from 16 to 65. As well as classes, personal trainers, beauty and body treatments, they regularly host events. Fancy an afternoon tea by the pool with a breathtaking view? Look no further than Venue Ladies.
As I leave the building, after six glorious hours of exercise, relaxation, pampering and delicious food, the sun is setting. The day has flown past and I’ve enjoyed every fabulous minute.

PARADISE FOUND
Authentic Qatari heritage meets ultimate modern luxury at The Ritz-Carlton Sharq Village, Doha and Amica Sicilia experiences what happens in this unique fusion.
Part of the beauty and the fascination of this city lies in its paradox: tradition alongside innovation, an oasis in the desert, the breakneck pace of urban life beside the eternal peace of the sea. If we want to thrive, we need both. But when the rat race gets too much, I know exactly where to rediscover my balance. At the heart of this modern metropolis sits a sanctuary village, The Ritz-Carlton Spa Sharq Village.
The marvel of Sharq Village is that as you walk through, it keeps revealing new delights. Marble halls inspired by the luxury of a shaikh’s palace, perfect for lazy afternoons drinking saffron-scented coffee and grazing on dates. A maze of courtyards, gardens and fountains. There’s the golden sand of the gently curving private beach, looking out on the Doha skyline. But follow the winding alleyways between low white stone and adobe villas and you reach the resort’s real hidden gem, the 6,500 square-metre spa.
I start to relax as soon as I step into the graceful double-height atrium. The whole space is designed to recall the privacy and intimacy of a traditional Qatari home. Cool water flows onto
a bed of river stones between banded wood columns. Soft light filters through the mashrabiya carved wooden screens, illuminating geometric al sadu traditional textiles and intricate al khous mats, woven from date palms.
I am welcomed by Ravi, my guide for the day, with a glass of chilled lauki juice, freshly pressed from bottle gourds rich in iron, calcium and vitamins B12, C and K. It’s the first sign that this isn’t just a spa, but a holistic wellness centre, focussed on whole-body health.
My first stop of the day is with Osama, the fitness director, in the gym. The priority here is to precision tailor my exercise exactly to my body and my needs. I step on the scales with some trepidation, but this isn’t (just) about weight, it’s about analysing my entire metabolism to maximise results for my effort. Based on my readings, Osama then guides me through what the sleek machines of the state-of-the-art ladies’ gym can do for my body. Then it’s time to look beyond the physical. I join Ravi back in the majlis over a breakfast platter of tropical fruits to talk about how I really am. Together we identify the habits – healthy and less so – that typify my life, in a truly personalised 360-degree wellness consultation.
My reward for such self-scrutiny is the best hot-stone massage of my life. My therapist Tari first bathes my feet in warm rosewater before helping me relax on the bed where – luxury of luxuries – I find that the bed itself is heated! Hot-stone massage dates back over 2,000 years to ancient China. The secret is that these are not just any stones, they are volcanic basalt, smooth as silk, dark and incredibly dense, they originate from lava and are by their very nature extraordinary at holding gentle heat. Tari focusses their healing power on my back and shoulders, where these supercharged pressure points detoxify, improve lymphatic flow and dissolve tension away. As the stones gently radiate their energy along my back, Tari turns to my other limbs, working any remaining tension from the muscles with ESPA’s relaxing and soothing signature oil. The scents of myrrh and rose geranium fill the air as my skin is nourished with avocado and sweet almond, rich in Omegas 6 and 9 with calming well-being actives magnesium, valerian and ashwaganda. Full wellness, of course, also requires full nourishment. In a private relaxing majlis space, I am served a healthy feast on spotless silver trays. A fragrant soup of lentil, cumin and
coriander sits beside a duo of colourful crisp salads, one the chef’s take on a Waldorf, aromatic with walnuts and blue cheese, the other a classic Caesar with lean grilled chicken. My lunch fit for a queen is completed by delicately steamed salmon with lemon thyme and sauteed vegetables and a freshly squeezed juice of carrot and red apple.
After lunch, it’s time for an absolute first for me, sleep yoga, to complete the mind-body connection in a virtuous circle of relaxation. If you’re anything like me and always on the go, mind racing, this is something approaching actual magic. I lie back on a low mat in a softly candlelit room. Guided by Ravi, I’m told to send my mind to each muscle of my body, feeling its presence, its strength and then sending it into deep relaxation. As the brain helps the physical body find peace, I start to drift off, at one with the space. After half an hour, the voice of Ravi brings me back to the present moment and I wake as refreshed as after a full night’s sleep.
The final step of my journey is in my favourite element, water. And here the indulgence reaches new heights. For a water journey like no other, I find myself in a private Hammam
room. Set deep into alcoves around the walls beneath a high domed ceiling sit a series of circular pools, each one at a different temperature. To my left, my own private sauna in pale wood; to my right a pearly tiled steam room. The dry golden heat of the sauna evaporates the last of my stress away. But, like this city, the true beauty of the Hammam is revealed through contrast. I gather my courage and slip into the cold water pool, releasing a rush of endorphins. Every cell of my body is alive, awake, present and reinvigorated. I could stay here forever, but when the water has worked its magic, I wander back through quiet courtyards to watch the sunset slip behind the city skyline from the tranquillity of my secluded village beach.

Celebrating Women and Love
Max Mara Resort 2023 collection brings a narrative of naïve love accompanied by unique Portuguese artistic expressions. Striking designs for independent and passionate women.
The Italian luxury brand Max Mara has been presenting its Resort collections in different locations and for the 2023 creations, Lisbon was the chosen spot to showcase the new pieces. The contrast between lush green gardens and the concrete architecture of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Portugal’s capital was the perfect scenario to reveal the transitional collection. Artistic manifestations were also the inspiration for the Resort 2023 concept. Natália Correia, a Portuguese intellectual, poet and social activist, is celebrated and revived by this collection. The Lenços de Namorados do Minho, which means handkerchiefs of love, are a Portuguese romantic tradition and a symbol of a conquest ritual. They are a poetic and artistic form used by girls of marriageable age who used to embroider squares of linen or cotton with messages and love symbols to win the heart of their beloved. Floor-sweeping dresses in taffeta fabric and pleats are the perfect medium to express the dramatic melody of traditional Fado music. Hearts, flowers, ribbons and doves rendered in the sophisticated naïf style (a type of art that is conceived and produced by artists with no specific academic preparation) of the Lenços de Namorados appear in Max Mara’s prints and dressy crystal brooches. Working with local artisans, the brand created T-shirts inspired by the motifs of this tradition, carrying Max Mara’s own lines of love, which, in accordance with custom, begin with a heartfelt entreaty to reach the object of the sender’s affections. Vai Lenço Feliz (Go Happy Handkerchief) is the Resort 2023 message that delivers passion, happiness and power, so intrinsic to Max Mara’s beliefs.
ROUND AND AROUND WE GO
With the new year, you might feel the time is right to give your home a fresh look and what could be better than going for the latest market trend: curves?
Trends are everywhere, from new gadgets to construction and when it comes to home interiors, it’s no different. But how long do interior trends usually last? Studies show that they typically span a decade or two, if they are strong and appealing enough. Decorating a home is not like changing your wardrobe twice a year. Homes have the specific purpose of keeping us warm and safe. We like to go back to a place that is familiar – we tend to build a nest. This means we actually appreciate finding our personal space unchanged. We create memories and associate them with the rooms and elements that transform our houses into homes.
While in the ‘90s, minimalism was only a niche for the likes of architects and experts, in the 2000s, thanks to more affordable products (from places such as IKEA), minimalism spread into the majority of modern homes. For more than 20 years, product developers, architects and interior designers have been favouring simplicity, sleek lines and neutral palettes over ornamentation, busy patterns, pendants and swirls. Even in some cultures that embrace a more vivid style, minimalism has found its way into people’s personal spaces.
As per the dictionary definition, minimalism is a lifestyle involving a reduction or simplification of one’s material possessions that frees one to lead a more intentional, purposeful and spiritual existence. That’s what has been happening in our houses (and lives) for the past 20 years. It’s worth remembering that trends pass, so we opt for what is simpler and more established. However, it might be time for a big change with a new home interior choice that’s all the rage: curves!
Curves are one of the latest interior design elements that have been gaining popularity for a while and can be incorporated into different styles. We can finally embody playful round and arched elements into our homes, that are currently full of straight lines, sleek designs and squared shapes. Rounded lines bring joy and can add an exciting touch. This trend emphasises softness, fluffy cushions, comfortable shapes and silhouettes that are at the same time bold and comfy.
STILL UNSURE?
If you’re not convinced that you like round shapes, you could introduce a few pieces to your décor and see if you enjoy the effect. Start with small, simple accents like coffee tables, ottomans and chairs. You could also give wallpapers a try, wall stickers or circular mirrors. Test The Water: Purchase small items that can easily mix and match with the elements you already have at home. Think about the colour pattern you follow or fill that empty space that has been calling for something and that will benefit from a round shape.
SOUNDS ATTRACTIVE?
Then re-think your living room – the centre of your home. A cosy curvy couch could definitely be the main protagonist of the space. Imagine sitting on a soft cloud, just like cuddling up in a warm hug. It’s also time to buy a big, rounded rug, a bold statement that brings the rest of the elements together.
Keep In Mind: The space will have a different flow compared to a room with a square or sectional sofa. A rounded sofa cannot be pushed against the wall. It’s better to account for some extra room to be able to walk round it. If you want to introduce this kind of curvilinear piece, you need to understand that they take up more space and are a bit more cumbersome.
ALREADY CONVINCED?
You’re ready to embrace it for life and are free to play harder: it’s time to introduce built-in statements like round showers, built-in bookcases or archways. We already have sharp-edged lives – it’s time to smooth out the corners and sweeten the setting (ambience).
Do Not: Houses still need to be practical and store as much as we need since we are inclined to accumulate. Don’t go too far: rounded walls are fine in a shower or a statement-decorative element. Do keep in mind: 90-degrees walls are the most functional and practical way to organise our stuff. Standard rectangle-shaped furniture doesn’t fit against a curved wall. Incorporate it, but always in moderation.

ReNEW You
Wellness retreats have become a popular alternative to customary luxury vacationing. Lawson Misquitta explored some of the best places around the globe to relax and take care of your health.
Every year, it could be considered necessary for us to take a step back and take some time off from our hectic lifestyles to allow us the chance to relax and recharge. Spas play a special role in providing a space where we can go and soothe our bodies and minds. They offer therapies that promote physical, mental and spiritual healing, which are essential aspects that contribute towards a healthy lifestyle. A wellness retreat is usually structured around providing guests with a relaxing holiday that includes the benefits of a wonderful spa but also pays specific attention to helping them improve their overall health and well-being. Wellness retreats aren’t a particularly new phenomenon, but in recent years they have comprehensively developed into a diverse offering spread across the globe, with specialist retreats working to provide a reprieve from modern life’s trials and tribulations. The retreats offer a unique and valuable venue for individuals, couples, families and groups to seek a healthy refuge from the fast-paced lifestyles so prevalent in contemporary society. At these relaxing and empowering havens, guests can nourish and revitalise their bodies, minds and psyches to attain or regain elevated levels of personal wellness.
Well-being is innately personal; hence different locations offer choices that enable guests to tailor the experience to suit themselves and their needs.

AN EXQUISITE CHINESE JOURNEY
Following the path of a fictional young foodie, Luke Bennett discovered an impressive selection of flavours at Miss Wong.
Eats
Located at Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas on the pristine, western coastline of Doha, Miss Wong offers a variety of outstanding Chinese dishes along with a finedining experience that definitely makes the drive from the city worthwhile.
Stepping through the grand, red doors, we were warmly greeted by a smiling hostess who encouraged us to strike a Chinese gong, marking the start of our culinary adventure. The stylish décor along with a scattering of blossom trees pay homage to the restaurant’s Oriental roots. High ceilings, a glass-walled kitchen and the considered use of geometric-patterned partitions develop a spacious yet intimate ambience within the main dining room. As we were seated at our semi-private table, Hien Lee (the passionate and knowledgeable manager) explained the interesting concept behind the restaurant and its name. Miss Wong is not the name of the head chef; she is a fictional character who travelled across her native land of China exploring and sampling the culinary offerings. From roasting duck in the north to creating hand-pulled noodles in the south, her experiences are reflected within the eclectic menu that celebrates the vast diversity of Chinese cooking techniques, fresh ingredients and exciting spice combinations. The first appetiser to arrive was an elegantly presented mix of poached chicken breast and thigh surrounded by punchy Szechuan chilli oil. The fibres of the succulent meat melted in my mouth and the heat of the Szechuan chilli was balanced out by the saltiness of the soy sauce that topped the perfectly poached chicken.
Eats
Still salivating from the previous dish, an assortment of expertly crafted, steamed dumplings was served by our enthusiastic waiter, Saktan, who kindly took the time to explain each individual parcel. With the removal of the lid, my eyes were instantly drawn towards two colourful and unfamiliar looking options. Firstly, a tender beef dumpling that was encased within a reddish dough achieved with the use of truffles. Followed by a juicy lamb parcel wrapped in a black, squid-ink shell. As you’d expect, there were also the customary chicken, prawn and vegetable options all of which were equally delicious with generous fillings wrapped in soft, moist casings. Accompanying the intriguing collection of steamed dumplings was a bowl of hot and sour seafood soup with a perfectly crisp, vegetable bon-bon formed into a ‘money bag’ shape to resemble the bags used to carry coins in China’s past. Submerged within the well-balanced broth was a substantial serving of shredded king crab, shrimp, tofu and wood ear mushrooms, all of which brought a different textural element to the dish. Now to the surprise of the evening, and I am still smiling as I begin to describe the final appetiser. Spectacularly housed within a golden cage to replicate the fishing method was the Double King Bi Fong Soft Crab. Aptly named after a district of Hong Kong that is famed for its seafood, this unforgettable dish is soon to be added to Miss Wong’s menu and I can already see it being a diners’ favourite. The exterior of the crab was flawlessly fried in a light, oil-free, wheat batter that provided a palatepleasing crunch, and the interior offered soft, succulent pieces of crab meat that retained ideal levels of moisture. The contrast of the crispy exterior and juicy interior was a joy to savour. Elevating this dish even further was a plentiful dusting of fried garlic chips, almond flakes and onions which made for a mouthful of crumbly goodness.
the perfect pancake. The duck was faultlessly tender and lean with a thin, crispy layer of skin. Red bean sauce offered a rich sweetness, and the surprising addition of melon supplied a harmonising freshness to each bite. As we continued to gleefully roll up the moreish pancakes, another tantalising main course was placed upon our table, stir-fried Wagyu beef – Miss Wong style. Each mouth-watering chunk of beef was wok fried to perfection and lightly smothered in a subtle, black pepper sauce. This dish, once more, emphasised Miss Wong’s use of high-quality produce prepared in a skilful manner. The accompanying wok fried egg rice also deserves a mention due its fluffy and palatable nature and the absence of any residual oil that can often spoil a portion of fried rice. Like all unforgettable culinary journeys, we ended on a sweet note with a surprising Jasmin Tea Lychee Mousse Cake. The satisfying ‘snap’ of the white chocolate shell revealed a light mousse surrounded by a fresh lychee sorbet that sat atop a crumbly biscuit base. I had no intention of consuming the entire cake, but sometimes you can’t help going back for more. We both left feeling comfortably full, yet to our relief, we didn’t experience the unpleasant, over-indulgent sensation that you might expect from being lavished with such generous portions of delectable food. I must add that the high standards of food are equally matched by the extremely impressive and professional service from the staff at Miss Wong. Personally, I have never driven that far to dine before, but I would certainly do it again!

THE ALL-NEW BMW SERIES I
AS LONG-TIME FANS OF THE BMW BRAND, OHLALA WAS DELIGHTED TO SPEND THE DAY IN THE 2023 740I LUXURY SALOON.
Drives
BMW has firmly established itself as a car super brand. This vehicle manufacturing powerhouse has become one of the world’s most recognisable labels thanks to more than a century of premium car production. They have tirelessly pushed the envelope in all areas of design and delivery, developing dynamic and sporty vehicles jam packed with high-performance technology, cutting-edge innovations, and a vast array of both driver assistance and safety features. This month, OHLALA was fortunate enough to get its collective hands on the new BMW 740i, compliments of the exceptional team at Alfardan Automobiles BMW.
EXTERIOR
Approaching the 740i for the first time, we were struck by the car’s potent presence. Exuding a sense of exclusivity, refinement and pure power, this latest creation from BMW is nothing less than a picture of aesthetic perfection. The front end of the new 740i is almost menacing in appearance, looking as if it wants to growl at you. The combination of its illuminated, chrome BMW kidney grille sitting proudly as its centrepiece, along with its twopiece, split crystal headlight units, ensures there is no doubt this car is a proud member of the luxury segment.
The forceful presence of this premium saloon continues at the flanks with its sleek yet powerful lines running from tip to trunk. Light tinted glass, black side window trims, aluminium panels, black door handles, along with 20-inch aluminium wheels, are all fitted as standard on the 740i, further contributing toward the car’s imposing demeanour.
At the rear, stylish LED brake lights and a modish twin dual exhaust system provide additional touches of class to an already outstanding exterior design.
INTERIOR & EQUIPMENT
Slipping into the ultra-comfortable, supportive and multi-adjustable front seats of the 740i, we were greeted by the most luxurious and remarkable cabin we’ve experienced in a BMW saloon to date. All materials used throughout the car are of a superior quality. Combining open-pore wood, stainless steel, glass and high-end fabrics, with intricate ambient lighting elements; the 740i’s interior is sure to please even the most discerning car critics. The full-width backlit dashboard, named the Interaction Bar by the brand, combines interior lighting, decoration and operation functions. This new 7-Series model houses the striking BMW Curved Display fully digital screen grouping, now featuring additional My Modes.
“Exuding a sense of exclusivity, refinement, and pure power, this latest creation from BMW is nothing less than a picture of aesthetic perfection.”
Drives
Furthermore, the brand is fitting modern models with the exceptional multi-sensory vehicle experience, the BMW iDrive 8 Infotainment System. This latest generation exhibits major upgrades in the user interface, natural voice recognition and cloud-based machine learning. Add the latest version of the BMW Head-Up Display, along with the enhanced capabilities of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assist to the equation, and you have one of the most capable configurations available on the market. One of the more unique elements of this new 740i is the 5.5-inch touchscreens located in the door handles. These allow occupants to control their seating position, their individual climate zone, the audio system, along with the available Theatre Screen entertainment display. This magnificent 31.3-inch widescreen display provides ultra-HD quality and 5G connectivity. A standard 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkens surround sound system further enhances the audio capabilities of the car. Yet another novel design element of the 740i is the futuristic looking Sky Lounge panoramic glass sunroof with LED threads. Space wise, the new 740i is both longer and wider than the previous generation, meaning ample leg, shoulder and headroom for all occupants.
POWER & PERFORMANCE
When it came to the on-road performance of the 740i, we were not disappointed. The 2023 model houses an Inline 6-cylinder, mild hybrid (48V), BMW TwinPower Turbo Engine. This mechanical monster generates 380hp along with 540Nm of torque. This translates to a 0-100km/h time of just 5.4 seconds and an electronically capped top speed of 250km/h.
With an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, a superb suspension system, a responsive braking system and plenty of grip on the corners, the remarkable performance of this 7-series saloon epitomises sheer driving pleasure.
SAFETY & ASSISTANCE
The designers at BMW have ensured the new 740i is equipped as standard with an impressive range of safety and driver assistance features. These include, but are not limited to, Front Collision Mitigation, Frontal Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, Tyre Pressure Warning, Driving Monitoring Alert, and a backup camera, along with a multitude of airbags located throughout the vehicle.
OUR VERDICT
We loved everything about this car. From the imposing yet refined exterior design to the immaculate and futuristic look of the interior, the designers have not put a foot wrong. Add in the advanced technology, entertainment, safety and assistance systems, and you have a top contender in the luxury sedan segment.

Why Do You Need a Plan?
When reading business and psychology reports, we understand the importance of planning. It has been proven that we tend to get things done and reach our objectives successfully when we actually plan first – making it specific and time/place-dependent.
According to psychologytoday.com, a series of studies from E.J. Masicampo and Roy Baumeister demonstrated that committing to a particular plan for a goal frees up cognitive resources for other pursuits. This means that in addition to helping us be more successful in achieving a specific intent, planning lets us get on with other stuff too. From the moment a plan is made to transform that one goal into reality, we make room for others to concretise. If well outlined, you can create short, medium and long-term plans and have them all working out the way you envisioned them. You just need to have a clear idea of what you want and look at it, even if it is a small project, with a plan well sketched. Lewis Carroll once said: “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will lead you there.”
Here are some of the reasons you should start planning today:
- First and foremost, planning helps you achieve your purpose.
- It helps you set your priorities.
- It makes a big task look smaller. No one should attempt to conquer a huge task directly. If you plan it and break it down, it will look like tiny bits of jobs and be more achievable.
- It makes the process clearer.
- It makes you more efficient.
- It helps you deal with crossroads and find alternatives.
- It builds your confidence.
- It helps you accept imperfections.
- It eliminates regret.
- And finally, it leads you to success. The whole meaning behind planning something is to succeed.
A new year full of possibilities is right in front of us. Have you planned what to do with the 365 days waiting for you in 2023?
