EDITOR’S LETTER To me, style is a way of introducing oneself without having to say a word. It’s a form of expression. I think of fashion and beauty as life-sweeteners, little brightly coloured sachets on the side to offset the seriousness of life. That’s why it is with great pride and excitement that I introduce myself as the new editor of OHLALA, and I am thrilled to embark on this journey. True to form, the September issue is all about fashion. From dramatic sleeves, bold shoulders and plaid patterns to fashionable fringe and feathers, you’ll find all the major looks that dominated the catwalks this AW20 season. One of our favourite labels circa now is undoubtedly Dior, showcasing not only a beautiful collection, but also a breathtaking show. Speaking of Dior, we also talk about the legendary photographer Richard Avedon who, together with Dior, revolutionised fashion photography. But what would a fashion magazine be without a bit of beauty talk? To that end, we’ve also incorporated a bunch of must-know beauty tips within this issue and they’re not to be missed! Here’s to life and taking the time to enjoy it.

and further insight into the concepts of self-expression and self-actualisation. How a simple object or act can have a significant impact on our own identity and the longevity of its transformational power thereafter. Unlike the Western School of Alchemy, which focuses on self-serving attempts to transmute base materials into gold, The Eastern School explores the transmutation of the individual – spiritually, physically and ideologically. Interestingly, this philosophy identifies the foot as the ‘bubbling spring’ of transformative energy.

Even before her time as a designer, Mary Alice Malone had always been fascinated by the paradoxical essence of the high heel. The tension of empowerment and vulnerability, of push versus pull, of concealment or revelation – and the power of the high heel to transform one’s self, both physically and psychologically. “My team always smile at me as we start to conceptualize a new

season”, says Mary Alice. “They often find my thought process quite amusing or bewildering – which is exactly what I seek. I’ve found there is great beauty to be found in theoretical design and the lessons we can take and share from this approach.” The new collection, aptly titled ‘The Laboratory of Ideas’, saw Mary Alice turn to the Eastern school of Alchemy for inspiration

As she delved into the idea of the shoe as object of desire, icon of design and conduit for personal expression, Mary Alice uncovered the notion that a shoe can fundamentally impact the way we move through space, relate to others and feel about ourselves. This concept was examined in what Mary Alice refers to as a ‘Laboratory of Ideas’ - a space in which designs are imagined and created in the physical world – but, additionally, the space where she experiments, tests and examines both

the physical and more obscure effects of her creations. The campaign portrays a space of high creativity, curiosity, humor and pragmatism – a blending of aesthetic values and scientific facts, of exploration and playfulness. Where the angles that a high heel impose on the musculoskeletal structure of a woman’s body are examined with as much vigor as the malleability of particular suede or the positioning of a buckle on a men’s loafer. Where the boldness of a low-cut vamp is as important as comfort of the shoe to walk in. Where a bond between object and self-expression is meticulously hatched. And where we ask our audience to delve into the magical process of transmutation that unravels in the teachings of Alchemy. Malone Souliers is exclusively available at Saks Fifth Avenue, City Centre Bahrain.

The show was staged at the Piazza del Duomo in Lecce, a small historical town in Puglia, Italy. A theatrical stage was built, and a full orchestra played - all for an exclusively digital audience who streamed the show around the world. Inspirations from the Puglia region run deep throughout the collection. Lecce’s history with bohemia, agriculture, arts, and crafts is weaved into bodices, skirts, and sheer overlays. The models wore kerchiefs in their hair or pastoral headscarves. A collection that erased the distinctions between the humble and the haute.

THE MAN, THE MYTH,

THE LEGEND

RICHARD AVEDON

How He and Dior Revolutionised Fashion Photography

T

he massive breakthrough in Richard Avedon’s career came in 1948, when he was collaborating with the house of Dior. For Dior’s New Look, Avedon went to Paris to photograph the couturier’s second show. And then, he did something that was never seen before in the fashion world: he broke away from the decades-old traditional way of photographing fashion. The frozen-in-time, statue-like look of Horst P. Horst or Beaton’s pastiches of 18th century portraits were all about the stillness of formality; the presentation of models simply being coat hangers. Avedon however broke up that dignified image, enlivening his models and introducing a sense of action into his photographs. The models in his pictures weren’t still statues, but living beings who danced and leaped and moved in blurs.

OHLALA Spotlight

ONWARD AND UPWARD London Fashion Week designer Elle B. Mambetov, founder of fashion line Elle B. Zhou, talks to OHLALA’s Elanur Sengel about the injustice she encountered when she was wrongly imprisoned for two years in a UK prison. Today, she is looking forward to the future with the highly anticipated relaunch of her womenswear line. 1. Please tell us a little about yourself, Elle. I was born in Texas, and although my life has out me in so many different directions, I think deep down I’m still that same girl from Texas who loves her cowboy hat! The only difference is that now I wear a hijab under the cowboy hat! 2. What can you tell us about your fashion label and its relaunch? My luxury fashion brand Elle B. Zhou was originally born in London, where I was previously a London Fashion Week designer. My brand very much had – and still has – a European design aesthetic, so London was the perfect place for me to develop its identity. The relaunch was inspired by the fact that I was struggling personally with my own fashion look after converting to Islam. I began covering in stages, and I found that there wasn’t something that existed for someone like me who was a convert, not used to wearing long dresses, yet still wanted the vibrancy and spice of colour. Therefore, the relaunch of my brand was in so many ways a response to my own personal necessity to feel like myself within the new confines of my religion. I wanted to cover, but I wanted to feel like myself in doing so.

3. How would you describe your design aesthetic? My design aesthetic is often an expression of what I hold dear, typically expressed through colour. I love statement pieces, where my creativity isn’t limited. I am always eager to take a crayon to a drawing and make it a little bit more crazy! It’s just who I am. When I design a pair of black trousers, I am not amused by beautiful understated embroidery. I need to add colour somehow or find a way to shake up the landscape of the garment until I’m pleased with the notion that I’ve created something unique to myself and the brand. 4. You unjustly went from the catwalk to prison. How did this horrific nightmare happen? After I became a London Fashion Week designer at the age of 26, a personal crisis left me a victim at the hands of my former friend, who defrauded me and stole my identity to commit other acts of fraud against myself and others. It was a devastating time; I was unjustly taken and thrown into a maximum-security prison after they arrested my former friend, who confessed and then absconded. The police didn’t know where he was, and I sat in prison for nearly one year fighting for freedom and waiting for a trial. I was put on the prison system as British instead of American, I was arrested, and my property was seized without a warrant. False information was also given about me, claiming I had previous convictions involving violence in the US to get a judge to agree to remand me to prison – there were a plethora of issues during my false imprisonment. The unjust treatment I suffered didn’t stop there. The prison ignored two release orders and held me captive in the prison. It took my mother contacting the United States Congress before I was finally released, put on a plane, and set free on US soil. Something like this can happen to someone like me, when others have no regard for someone’s life because of the colour of their skin, their gender, their beliefs. It was an extremely difficult experience to survive. 5. Would you say you have become a different Elle after this experience? In which way did it change you? Absolutely. When you unjustly spend two years around some of the most notorious criminals and serial killers in the world, you tend to feel unsafe, even after you are free. This experience left me with a fear of life that I didn’t have before. I’m constantly nervous that something bad will happen. The complexities are vast, from struggling to trust people to finding my creativity again as a designer. There are many scars, which I imagine will take a lifetime to heal. 6. What is next for Elle B. Mambetov in 2020? I am currently working on my new collection, which is very exciting, and I am actively seeking ways to become involved in prison reform on an international level. I am also releasing a podcast this year that will give insights into my home, life, and marriage. I’m excited for people to see different aspects of my life! www.ohlala-magazine.com

HAUTE

Horology WELCOME BACK,

Icon

Introducing the Cartier Pasha, an instantly recognisable model that relaunches this year in a version very similar to the 1985 original in some respects – and different in others.

There is a persistent but unsubstantiated rumour that the Cartier Pasha was originally designed by Cartier for the Pasha of Marrakesh in 1933. The likelier story – and a well-documented part of the French maison’s history – is that it debuted in 1985 and was intended to fill a perceived gap in Cartier’s watch line-up, which lacked a more overtly impactful sports-luxury watch. The idea was to produce something that could compete with the likes of Royal Oak (Audemars Piguet) and Nautilus (Patek Philippe). Produced in steel, yellow gold, and pink gold, and set with diamonds, the Pasha de Cartier collection includes many models, incorporating fine jewellery pieces and watchmaking creations with skeleton versions. With its distinctive codes and extraordinary design, the Pasha is for those who think big, for open-minded personalities who favour a multidisciplinary approach and strong connections. Their ambitions are as bold as those of the watch in question — an extroverted accessory that steps outside the box of classic watchmaking. But how? By setting itself apart, embracing an assertive graphic signature. Compositionally speaking, the Pasha is a square in a circle. It immediately introduces a nonconformist watch that harmoniously brings opposites together. Four bold Arabic numerals ensure an oversized, ultra-contemporary appearance. Its striking design challenges the predominance of round shapes in watchmaking and amplifies its presence, originality, and singularity. The bracelet is accentuated by the clous de Paris whilst its chained crown ensures maximum visibility. That’s why the Pasha has been a cult watch since its creation in 1985. At the time, its power caught the eye of the generation’s opinion leaders. Interestingly enough, the watch was initially adopted by men, but appropriated by women for the power it exudes soon after. The standout timepiece loves light, assumes its excesses, and asserts its strength of character. Faithful to the original model but even more sophisticated with a crown featuring a blue spinel or sapphire, interchangeable strap, and multiple possibilities of personalisation, the Cartier Pasha watch for the 2020s is classic yet contemporary – and just the right amount of edgy. JEWELLERY

Edit

SMALL

WONDERS Introducing two new high jewellery watches for 2020, Jaeger-LeCoultre places its Calibre 101 in the spotlight again. The two entirely original designs reaffirm the unique alliance between high jewellery and fine watchmaking made possible by this exceptional mechanism. in-house artistic team has taken a jewellery-led approach – first, designing the forms of the bracelets and style of gem-setting, then integrating the cases and movements into the designs. For the uninitiated: designing a watch normally takes the opposite approach, beginning with the case and then creating bracelets or straps to complement it. Both bracelets adhere faithfully to the classical high jewellery codes and are composed of pink gold set with diamonds, using only stones classified IF to VVS. However, the designs are utterly different in both form and character, emphasising the creative freedom allowed by the diminutive Calibre 101.

SNOWDROP

Originally conceived and developed for jewellery watches and introduced in 1929 by La Grande Maison, Calibre 101 revolutionised feminine watchmaking, its minuscule size and baguette shape offering new realms of aesthetic freedom to designers. Developed half a century before the advent of computer-aided design and production technology, Calibre 101 is a remarkable feat of miniaturisation. At 14mm long, less than 5mm wide, and weighing barely one gram, the hand-wound calibre remains the smallest mechanical movement in the world. It is also one of the world’s oldest movements that continues to be in production. For the two new diamond-set timepieces, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s 36

Inspired by the white bell-shaped flowers that are able to grow through a thin layer of snow in the Vallée de Joux, the manchettestyle Snowdrop exudes delicate femininity. A circle of pearshaped diamonds surrounds the dial to form a flower, while waves of diamonds repeat the petal pattern in perfect symmetry all the way around the bracelet. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s designers chose a ‘griffe’ setting for the diamonds, which minimises the metal’s presence and allows light to pass through the stones from all angles. This intensifies the spark of the watch, creating an impression that the diamonds could almost be floating on the surface of the bracelet. With 904 diamonds at a total of 20.9 carats (of which 204 are pear-shaped and the remainder brilliant-cut), the gem-setting work alone represents 130 hours of work by the jewellery artisans of the Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre. As seen from its profile, the bracelet’s structure is supported by two bands of gold, each

of them grain-set with diamonds – a linear setting technique in which tiny beads of gold are pulled up from the surface of the metal and pushed over the stone to secure it.

BANGLE The Bangle watch is an altogether bolder expression of femininity, inspired by the graceful geometry of Art Deco and strong forms of 20th century Modernism. A dynamic interplay of symmetry and asymmetry, the bracelet is set with 996 diamonds (for a total 19.7 carats), graduated in size to emphasise the sweeping curves of the design. The artisans have combined the griffe (144 diamonds) and grain setting (852 diamonds) techniques to heighten the diamond’s three-dimensional effect and maximise the play of light. Rows of grain-set diamonds highlight the gold bands that run along both sides of the bracelet, supporting its structure. The bracelet needs no clasp as it delicately opens with a simple twist of its two sides.

ICE ICE BEAUTY! ADD AN EXTRA (ICY) STEP TO YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE AND JUMPSTART YOUR BEST SKIN EVER. ALL YOU NEED? ICE CUBES.

50

www.ohlala-magazine.com

BEAUTY Spotlight

O

ne ice cube a day keeps the surgeon away. Yes, really! Ice cube massages dramatically improve your complexion, if done regularly. But before we get into how it works, let’s first look at the beauty benefits that come with icing your skin.

DRAMATICALLY IMPROVES BLOOD CIRCULATION Cold constricts blood vessels so that less blood goes to the skin surface. This reduces skin inflammation and swelling. Hence, say au revoir to the bags under your eyes and hello to a healthy glow. CONTROLS BLEMISHES The decreasing inflammation that comes from the constricted blood vessels also helps to clear out blemishes and cysts, and soothes irritation – a must for acne-fighters. SMOOTHES THE SKIN Skin icing tightens and shrinks the pores by unclogging them. This smoothes the skin and leaves a radiant complexion. BURNS FAT, TIGHTENS AND FIRMS THE SKIN Icing throws the Vagus nerve into thermogenesis, which effectively influences the nerves in your body to burn fat. This in turn tightens and firms the skin. Need we go on?

HOW TO USE ICE CUBES FOR GLOWING SKIN: 1. Cleanse your face thoroughly. 2. Wrap an ice cube in a paper towel. 3. When the ice starts melting, start massaging your face with it. 4. Massage your face with the ice cube in circular movements for 5-10 minutes. Go along the forehead and nose, along the chin and jawline, and up the cheeks. Never put the ice for too long on the same spot – always move it. Take special care of the undereye area as the skin here is very delicate. 5. To boost results, finish with toner, serum, and moisturizer. (If you put serum and night cream on after an ice cube massage, it will penetrate the deeper levels of your skin and work more.) Note: In the mornings: One-minute massage to just depuff the face. In the evenings: 5-10 minute massage to make your skin work.

SKIN BARRIER 101

A STRONG SKIN BARRIER IS THE SECRET TO GLOWING SKIN. BUT HOW DO YOU STRENGTHEN IT? 52

www.ohlala-magazine.com

BEAUTY Insight

W

hat is the skin’s natural barrier and why do you need it? Let’s tackle this first. The skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin, and it protects you from environmental damage and trans-epidermal water loss. It also protects from irritants and allergens, which can cause all the skin issues you don’t want, like acne and inflammation. So, glowing skin always begins with a strong skin barrier. When we’re talking about what strengthens the natural skin barrier, it’s important to first know what also weakens it: stress, over-washing, over-exfoliation, and hormonal changes amongst others. But the biggest factor that weakens your skin barrier is environmental stressors. These determine on how your skin ages, how your skin barrier breaks down, and all of the other skin issues that you might face. UV rays and pollution are the most damaging environmental stressors, which is why – we’ve said it a million times and we’ll say it again – sunscreen is SO important in your daily beauty routine. However, sunscreen is to protect your skin barrier, so the question remains: how do you strengthen it? A healthy skin barrier is composed mainly of lipids, and the three key components are: ceramides, fatty acids, and cholesterol. To strengthen your protective barrier, you want to use ingredients in your skincare that rebuild and repair these components. One effective ingredient to replenish your barrier is ceramides. Think of ceramides as the mortar between bricks – if the bricks are your skin cells, that is. Ceramides help hold skin together by forming a protective layer that limits moisture loss and protects against pollution. Next, you want to use ingredients that stimulate lipid production. Here, niacinamide (Vitamin B3) is the top ingredient. Not only does niacinamide stimulate lipid production, but it is also an antioxidant, so it helps to protect your skin against environmental damage.

“Ceramides help hold skin together by forming a protective layer that limits moisture loss and protects against pollution.” Another ingredient that really strengthens your skin barrier is probiotics. Probiotics are microorganisms, and microorganisms live on your skin and inside of your body. There are good ones, and there are bad ones. Probiotics happen to be the good ones – the ones that you want to flourish. Topically on your skin, probiotics strengthen your skin’s natural barrier by repairing it and help to improve its overall immunity. Now you know the best barrier-boosting ingredients, but make sure you have good products! Start here with Ohlala’s picks of the best skin-barrier saviours:

SHOCK FACTOR The health club at Dessange Bahrain offers a workout that is (shockingly) effective, so naturally, we had to try it.

I

f you’re the kind of woman who is time-poor but physically inclined, this one’s for you: Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS), a workout that uses electricity to stimulate muscle contraction as you train. It’s 150 times more intense than your average workout and, this being said, only a 20-minute workout that is more effective than four hours in the gym. Shocked? I am about to be. I arrive at the newly reopened health club at Dessange Bahrain, which is one of the island’s most luxurious health clubs to offer EMS training. Plush interiors aside, it promises everything and more: a gym, personal trainers, class packages, an Inbody Analysis machine, a power plate, private 1-1 Pilates sessions, juice bars, and – the reason I’m here – EMS training. First, a medical form ensures that I am fit enough to be hooked up to the machine. Then I meet Maya, the trainer, who describes both the machine and the training programme in greater detail. Next, I am put into a training suit and straps are added around my legs, arms, and glutes that are then connected by cables to the EMS machine. Maya tests my comfort levels with increasing levels of electrical pulses, emitting a strong vibrating and tingling feeling. And so begins the 20-minute workout.

I start to perform routine training exercises in 30-second intervals (think: squats, lunges, weight-lifting, sit-ups, core rotations, and other aerobic exercises) while the machine is doing its thing. So how does it feel? Intense. It makes basic moves feel really tough. The electric impulses of EMS training target six muscle groups: arms, chest, abs, back, legs, and butt. Plus, the impulses and their intensity can be adjusted to pinpoint specific muscles, according to your goals. And when it comes to goals, EMS training helps with all of them: weight loss, body toning, cardio, and strength. I can tell that EMS is quite effective by the way it feels; all my muscles certainly ache, but in a good way. Maya watches me closely and guides me throughout the session. 56

“And when it comes to goals, EMS training helps with all of them: weight loss, body toning, cardio, and strength.

20 MINUTES LATER After 20 minutes of turning up my training with EMS, I can vouch for the following: this was undoubtedly the hardest workout I’ve ever endured, but also the most enjoyable! It’s perfect for anyone who does not have much time for a long workout; 20 minutes is all it takes before you can hop in your car and return home feeling great. You can even squeeze in a session during your lunch hour. Because why not? What I really enjoyed about Dessange’s health club is the personal touch that the staff add to the whole experience. They’re friendly, extremely knowledgeable about their industry, and genuinely care

about their customers. Whether you want to complement your existing training programme or replace it entirely when you’re short on time, giving EMS a try comes highly recommended. Can you say fabulous quick fix?

As we emerge from a state of slumber, the excitement continues as we order room service for dinner – and what a meal it is. Thin, perfectly cured slices of meat topped with tomatoes and greens make the Beef Bresaola a sound choice, while the Tom Yum Soup is one of the best we’ve had in a while – there’s no skimping on prawns here. The seafood mixed grill, meanwhile, was a smoky and tender affair that we couldn’t get enough of. Owing to The Westin’s philosophy of food synergy, the menus here are packed with eat well menu that create vitality and well-being, pairing certain foods together to increase their health-enhancing properties. www.ohlala-magazine.com

A Line A simple visual element – a line – is the core inspiration

of Serrb’s Autnumn/Winter 2020 collection. Working with classic designs in mind, the AW20 collection boasts an array of modest silhouettes reimagined in modern cuts, catering to every woman’s way of styling. Floor-length coats and separates in block hues polished with minimal detailing in contrasting colours are the highlight of the season. These, when blended with separates that illustrate tonal dressing along with capes and dresses, add a feminine touch to the collection. Playing with fabrics such as neoprene and suede, Serrb experiments with a 2D exercise by repeating and angling its unique inspiration. A colour palette featuring dark hues of black, grey, brown and green, fused with subtle hints of white and beige, symbolise the season’s aesthetic.

resh-from-the-ocean seafood cooked to perfection is why we head over to Fiamma, located at the opulent Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa. Entering the restaurant, we are not only welcomed by the friendly and ever-attentive staff, but also the captivating contemporary atmosphere. Arabic patterns and tall pillars complete with elegant dark hardwoods lead us from one beautiful space to another. The choice of fabrics, textures, and injections of colour create the aura of a luxurious Arabian palace. We take a seat and begin to satisfy our seafood cravings. Chef Marco prepares his wellpresented dishes with a focus on the finest quality ingredients, which we can also tell from the wholesome and well-balanced taste. Starters include a mouthwatering Mediterranean seafood salad that comes with citrus segments and capers, and my personal favourite: the caprese salad. The creamy buffalo mozzarella that is full of flavour accompanies tomato slices, which Chef Marco infused with orange juice for a more elevated taste. As we move on to our entrée, we can’t help but marvel over the vibrant taste of the saffron fish broth that dominates our brodetto seafood soup – a light yet rich taste that makes it addictive! Another dish cooked to perfection? Veal Milanese. This tender, milk-fed veal chop is enveloped in spiced breadcrumbs and served alongside

chickpea fritters and rich fondant potatoes. The next culinary masterpiece to be enjoyed is the Sicilian mini pizzolo. Here, we’re making a tasty discovery as this is not your typical pizza. It’s a doublelayered pizza, crusted with parmesan cheese, and filled with tomatoes, cheese, basil and eggs. We taste our way through numerous flavours before a final dish of grilled rib eye steak with delicious beef juice and intense truffle polenta cake arrives. The steak is done just right, and we’d expect nothing less at Fiamma. Of course, we’re not leaving the restaurant without savouring the everso-sweet creations of executive pastry chef Anis Mouldi – read: lemon meringue, chocolate delice, and tiramisu. As predicted, the tiramisu is a real crowd-pleaser and the chocolate delice wows with its rich texture, but it’s the lemon meringue that has us in awe. It’s light, refreshing, and just what the end of summer calls for.

MERCEDES-AMG GLE 53 COUPÉ

THE NEW GLE 53 COUPÉ IS NOTHING LESS THAN EXCEPTIONAL, DELIVERING PERFECTION WITH EVERY FEATURE. 78

www.ohlala-magazine.com

W

e at Ohlala love all things Mercedes-Benz. Over the last few years, we have had the privilege of experiencing an array of Mercedes’ offerings and have never left feeling less than thoroughly impressed. In fact, Mercedes-Benz is one of those elite brands that consistently strives and manages to improve its vehicles with every new model released. It is not surprising that the Mercedes name is synonymous with prestige and high-performance. This month we were fortunate enough to be offered a test drive in the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupé, compliments of the great team at Nasser Bin Khaled Automobiles. Needless to say, we immediately seized the opportunity. As the AMG GLE 53 4Matic Coupe came into view, we were instantly struck by the robust yet elegant design of the exterior. The

master craftsmen at Mercedes have managed to create a vehicle that is truly exceptional to look at. The prominent power domes of the bonnet emphasise the muscular stature of this coupé, whilst the striking “A-wing” in the front apron, the double ring around the Mercedes star, as well as the slim headlamps, showcase the fine attention to detail the design of this car has received. Further notable exterior features include the front apron with its sporty outer air inlets, the silver chrome front splitter, and the 21-inch, light-alloy wheels with AMG lettering. Emphasising the vehicle’s refined appearance even further are the AMG side skirts, spoiler lip and boot lid, all of which are painted in the vehicle colour. At the rear, the newly designed apron, complete with eye-catching diffuser elements and silver chrome trim strip, visually accentuate the vehicle’s width, whilst the optional AMG Performance exhaust system (Selectable), made up of two round twin tailpipe trim elements, accentuate the car’s sporty attitude. www.ohlala-magazine.com

DIVA Drives Once inside the cabin, it was obvious that the brand’s dedication to perfection had been applied to every aspect of the vehicle. Stunning red topstitching on the upholstery, red seatbelts and AMG badges in the front backrests, provide a sporty ambience with an exclusive touch, whilst the quality and comfortability of the leather seats are of an exceptionally high standard. The interior is very spacious throughout the vehicle ensuring five adults will travel in comfort. The three spoke AMG, black nappa leather steering wheel with aluminium shift paddles feels perfect in hand. The innovative control and display system MBUX, is equipped as standard in the GLE 53 Coupé. The touchscreen multimedia display and the instrument cluster optically combine into one unit thanks to the layout of the widescreen cockpit. We found the system to be very efficient and user-friendly. One of the best features of this system is the intelligent voiceoperated control “Hey Mercedes” that allows for hands free access to numerous functions. As impressive as both the exterior and interior of this vehicle are, it was the engine and dynamic driving system that impressed us the most. The AMG GLE 53 4Matic Coupe boasts a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder, twin turbocharged engine, complemented by a 9-speed automatic transmission. This setup produces 435 hp and 520 Nm of torque. This allows the AMG to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in a mere 5.3 seconds and has an electrically limited top speed of 250km/h. The new AMG Active Ride Control feature enhances the car’s driving performance, reducing body roll and increasing control when cornering. This all-wheel-drive vehicle has five modes on offer namely Comfort, Sport, Sport +, Slippery and Individual+”, ensuring the vehicle delivers optimal performance during both longdistance travel and short sporty bursts. Additionally, two new modes for off-road use are now available in the form of “Trail” and “Sand”. We were taken aback by how smooth and powerful the AMG GLE 53 4Matic Coupe is. It felt as if we were driving around in a first-class sports car. From the responsive sports steering and high-performance braking system to the outstanding air suspension and traction control of this vehicle, we thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this driving experience. We cannot praise the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupé loudly enough. Every feature of this vehicle is nothing less than exceptional and we can honestly say that this car is amongst the very best we have ever had the privilege of test-driving. Contact Al-Haddad Motors on 1778 5454 or visit http:// www.alhaddadmotor.com for more information and to book a test drive of your own.

MISS Ohlala

WHY FASHION MATTERS MISS OHLALA DELVES DEEPER INTO THE IMPORTANCE OF FASHION… Who said fashion doesn’t matter? Fashion is actually very important in our lives. The way you look and carry yourself speaks a lot about who you are. Whether it’s your hair, makeup, or clothing, what you choose to wear says something. Fashion is a language. It’s a statement. It’s a peek into a personality. Your appearance is the first thing people will see when they look at you. And whether you like it or not, they will make assumptions about you based on what they see. They will have an opinion on your personality before you’ve said a word. And what can that lead to? Not getting the job. Not being taken seriously. Getting judged. All because of the way we dress – or don’t dress. First impressions matter. Fashion matters. Yes, clothing isn’t everything, but it plays an important role on how you perform in your daily tasks. And it plays an important role on how confident you feel. However, fashion isn’t limited to following trends. You can be playful when it comes to your style. That’s the best part. What you choose to put on can be directed by your mood, the season, even the city you reside in. Show them who you are and who you want to be. Maybe you can’t afford luxury labels, maybe you can – what matters is your personal style and staying true to it. 82
