nd here we are. It’s that time of year again when wardrobes become a battleground as the glut of events fill your December and the need to diversify your outfits makes your heart beat faster. I’ve always faced the beginning of the party season with baited breath - year on year, despite a burgeoning closet (praise be) the “I have nothing to wear” sartorial syndrome rears its head in and I can never understand how, just how, this happens every single time. To make it easier for you to piece a look together, we’ve come up with a shortlist of our favourite style trends, with a Hollywood screen siren inspiration to get you further in the mood, which is sure to make you the life of the party and feel oh so good. Personally I’m partial to simple elegance. An LBD, a delicate set of pearls and rouge lips (Sofia Graniello has you well covered with the perfect hues) is a fine ensemble. But the outfit isn’t the be-all and end-all. Whether it’s an office party, an al fresco affair or a home lounge gathering, social etiquette applies. Angela Beitz breaks it down in a pithy list of things to do and things to avoid. But while we worry about keeping up appearances, let’s not forget to ground ourselves and see the value in what 2015 has brought us. We at Ohlala love the sparkly offerings magazine life brings. From attending fashion shows, to meeting distinguished celebrities at restaurant openings to being moved by contemporary artists, it’s a privilege doing what we do. But you can’t beat those priceless in-house moments when we talk about our own inspirations, women we love and happenings that changed us, as we’re experimenting with layouts and thinking of ways to improve the magazine. We’ve got so much to celebrate, so many reasons to be grateful. So however you bring the year to a close, let there be light.

Style Insight
Let’s start off with your roots. You’re of Syrian origin and were brought up in the U.K. How did you come to be a designer?
I
’ve always felt that fashion choseme!InSyriaIusedtoplayinmyfather’sfabricshop.Iwould climb up the hundreds of rolls of fabrics and look down onto a sea of colour, print and metallic embroideries. It was a huge change when we moved to Sheffield in 1998 but, whilst studying fashion in Manchester and London, I found myself and decided where I wanted to be. I won the womenswear award at Graduate Fashion Week and applied for the British Fashion Council scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art. I still feel like I’m just at the start though. There’s a long way to go yet!
What does your Elizabethan inspired collection speak to? We just love the ruffles..! I’m actually currently undertaking a PHd in Elizabethan dress combined with modern sportswear construction techniques! I’ve been obsessed with Elizabethan era techniques for as long as I can remember and studying history has always kept me mindful that it’s important to create things which last - to create a legacy. Just as obsessed as I am with the Elizabethans, I want future generations to look back at this moment and be inspired by what we do. I want to cut through the noise and create pieces that a woman will keep in her wardrobe forever. I want to create meaningful pieces which tell a story and reflects a moment in time through my research and innovation.
Why Elizabethan in the first place? I’ve always been very inspired by Queen Elizabeth I. I design for strong, passionate women who like to challenge convention and are not afraid to stand out from the crowd. Elizabeth was the perfect embodiment of those traits.
“I’ve been obsessed with Elizabethan era techniques for as long as I can remember and studying history has always kept me mindful that it’s important to create things which last to create a legacy” What’s your favourite piece in the collection and why? The ‘Elizabethan Wing’ dress, which incorporates cutting-edge bonding techniques with a silk tulle overlay is my favourite piece. This collection is the first chapter of my Elizabethan Sportswear story and incorporates modern sportswear finishing techniques, such as, sonic welding along with Elizabethan construction methods, including hand smocking and pleating.
Tell us a little bit about your 3D printing technique. Is this a trend of the moment? I found out I was actually the first designer to use 3D Printing on the catwalk for my Royal College of Art collection in 2010! It enabled me to visualise ideas quickly and accurately, that I couldn’t have achieved by any other means. I’m 36

Style Insight “Karl saw the pleated, bonded shirt at our showroom in Paris and exclaimed “I love it, I love it, I love it.” He has always been such an inspiration to me. Meeting him, listening to his thoughts, his advice and hearing his ideas made me respect him even more” also currently researching the use of 3D scanning in fashion design because I believe it’s critical to always search for innovative techniques to inform your practice. Otherwise you are just repeating what has been done before. What would be the point in that?
We also love the fact that you’ve got a clear blend of Middle Eastern and British history in your pieces. How and why have you created that dialogue in your collection? I find it comes very naturally to me. Obviously, being half English and half Syrian helps! It’s not something. I really have to think about. It’s instinctive.
Now we’ve read you made a shirt for Karl Lagerfeld! How did that come about and are you planning on collaborating with him in the future? Karl saw the pleated, bonded shirt at our showroom in Paris and exclaimed “I love it, I love it, I love it” followed by “We must buy this for Amanda Harlech”. It was such an extraordinary moment I still can’t quite believe it actually happened. Karl has always been such an inspiration to me. Meeting him, listening to his thoughts, his advice and hearing his ideas made me respect him even more. He has an extraordinarily vast knowledge of history and culture which allows him to instantly contextualise both references to the past and cutting-edge innovations. I think if we were to collaborate, we would embrace the latest technology whilst striving to create a timeless and powerful femininity; creating new history.
Has the Middle Eastern market warmed to your designs? Yes! The reaction has been extraordinary. The press have been so interested and supportive of the brand. I think the Middle Eastern influence that is clearly visible in a British brand spurs on patriotism for them! It’s that mix of East and West in my work that makes me unique. I think that I have yet to be discovered as a brand in the Middle East but I am getting there step by step. I am extremely proud of my heritage. www.ohlala-magazine.com

BEAUTY Column Party season conjures all sorts of lovely feels
from cocktails and canapes to super soirees but it can also instill a certain panic when it comes to attending so many events and wanting to look great at all times. If you’re thinking you can get away with a quick swipe of bronzer and a top knot then you’d be wrong. It’s called “Dressed to the Elevens” for a reason. So how to survive these fun times? Read on.
Get a Facial
Party season is all about skin, skin skin. There’s no point getting all frocked up in the perfect outfit if your skin is dry and lacklustre. Deep moisturising facials that contain Vitamin C are wonderful for that party glow and will help your makeup sit better. Don’t forget to get a great deep cleansing facial once January comes around as the combination of late nights and loads of makeup will wreak havoc on your skin. If you don’t have time for a facial then be sure to use one at home after you exfoliate. Hydrating cloth type masks are perfect for pre and post party beauty.
Groom Like a Pro
A bold nail colour is always stunning for events but if you are attending many then it pays to get a manicure in a dusty pink or beautiful nude shade which will ensure your look is clean and polished and will pretty much match all of your party outfits. Applying natural looking false eyelashes or a good eyelash tint are also good time saving investments and be sure to have your eyebrows waxed or threaded.
Embrace the Smoky Eye
I love a bright red lip as much as the next girl but with all the canapes you’ll be eating and bubbles you’ll be sipping, you don’t want to spend half the night in the bathroom
Life of the Party
Winter has arrived with a social calendar jammed packed with events. Angela Beitz shares her beauty cheat sheet to surviving one event after another
reapplying your lippy when you could be enjoying the party. A smoky eye is also the perfect way to transform your daytime look into an evening one by simply applying darker and shimmery toned eyeshadows with a slick of eyeliner.
Don’t Overindulge
While it might be a lovely idea at the time to eat 20 deep fried arancini balls, the remorse that sets in the next day will just not be worth it. It’s all very “Gone With The Wind” but my best advice is not to turn up to a party hungry or you’ll simply end up overeating. It’s all fun and games until your jeans don’t fit.
“While it might be a lovely idea at the time to eat 20 deep fried arancini balls, the remorse that sets in the next day will just not be worth it” Invest In a Good Blow-Dry
Fabulous hair at any time is a good investment so why not treat yourself to a decent blow-dry. A good blowout done section-bysection should last three to four days. Spritz it with a good dry shampoo to give your locks a longer life.
Hydrate
The old H2O has never been a better friend than during event time. Don’t go anywhere without it and remember that if you start to feel thirsty you are already dehydrated. Aim for 8-10 glasses a day. Your skin will thank you for it! www.ohlala-magazine.com

Beauty Insight The Concept
“The New Dimension skin care collection is all about transformation and empowering women to be in control of their own beauty. You can have a lot of fun with colour cosmetics, but where I really pay attention is what I put on my skin in terms of skin care. I love the fact that this new collection allows me to take control and transform how I want to see myself and how others see me.”
Beauty Through The Ages
“My mother was a young lady in the 50s, so she was always very old-school. She believed in never going out of the house without her hair done and at least a little lipstick on. When I was growing up, we didn’t have the means to buy anything luxurious, but my mother always made sure she presented herself in a very feminine way. She was just so naturally stylish, always super feminine and always a mom first.”
Essential Products
“Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair – I love this serum. The hyaluronic acid gives my skin the moisturization it needs when my skin is feeling dry. Estée Lauder Take It Away Makeup Remover Lotion – I don’t wear makeup every day, but when I do, I take it off with Estée Lauder’s non-drying Take It Away Makeup Remover Lotion. I love how the formula is notstripping. Coconut oil - I’m really on the coconut oil bandwagon – I’m on it and I love it. I can use it on my hair, my skin – I love products that have a multi-use. I tend to leave it in my hair overnight, a little deep conditioning for a bit of moisturizing and a little bit of shine.”
Adding Another Dimension
Eva Mendes and Estée Lauder are a dream partnership. And with Eva being the face of the New Dimension skin care products, we chat motherhood, beauty regime and personal growth The Collaboration
“It’s a dream come true to be part of the Estée Lauder family and of such an iconic brand. When I was younger, Estée Lauder was the epitome of beauty and I grew up admiring the brand’s iconic images. It was only later in life when I realised Estée Lauder is a brand for women, founded by a woman and run by women. So it’s very important for me to be part of a company that really celebrates and empowers women. When I was in 7th grade, I went to an Estée Lauder counter and the woman asked if I would like a sample – she gave me Knowing. I’ve loved it and have been wearing it ever since because, in my mind, it smells exactly like a woman should smell. My mother still gives it to me every year for Christmas.” 60

Inner Beauty
“For me, it’s about being my authentic self. It’s about embracing changes and mistakes while really continuing to grow. That’s something I’m really concentrating on right now. I’m only six months into motherhood, so I don’t have any major statements yet to make, but I really do feel that kids learn by example. So, if I work on myself and continue to be open and continue to grow as a person, I think that’s a good place to start.”
“For me, it’s about being my authentic self. It’s about embracing changes and mistakes while really continuing to grow. That’s something I’m really concentrating on right now” Motherhood
“Absolutely – it’s the biggest part of my life. Everything has more weight – who I align myself with, what companies I align myself with, what I’m out there promoting, how I’m promoting it. Everything, for me, goes back to the thought, ‘will I potentially embarrass my little girl at some point?’ I know I will embarrass her, I’m sure of it. That’s what moms do. But I want to make sure that she is proud of me.”
Lifestyle
I have two dogs and often on the weekend I’ll take them on a hike. I love them so much and they are big stress relievers. Living in Los Angeles, there are so many different places to hike. Runyon Canyon is one famous place to hike, but I stay away from that one because I don’t want to get photographed there. But there are a lot of trails there.

Ohlala Spotlight
Jewel Box
After quitting her banking job to pursue a career in the jewellery industry, Fatima Al Dhaheri has created a new interpretation of artisan design with her homegrown Abu Dhabi brand, Ruwaya How did this idea come about?
I had been working in the banking industry for some time when my father asked me to join the family business at Amwaj Jewellery. I was then working in the bank during the day and helping my father in the evening. I had a real passion for the jewellery industry so that finally took over and I went into the family business full-time. I started to make simple pieces for my family. My mum is very picky but she really liked my designs so I knew that I was onto something good. It was then suggested by my father that I should start my own brand.
What was your inspiration for Ruwaya?
The collection is named after my beautiful grandmother and is inspired by influences of my family and my sense of style. I wanted to do something that was really different, especially here in The Middle East. I wanted it to be something more than the usual designs that you see and I didn’t want to imitate other brands. Each piece is handcrafted and is totally unique, featuring precious stones that I source from all over the world.
How would you describe Ruwaya’s style?
The pieces are bright, bold and modern. I want to change the way that people think about wearing jewellery. I really believe that wearing jewellery should make a statement whether you are wearing it with a white shirt and jeans or with a ball gown.
What are your favourite gemstones or materials to work with? I really love sapphires and most of the pieces in the collection are made from sapphires. I love the pink, green and feminine tones that 62
www.ohlala-magazine.com
they come in. I also really love to work with gold and pearls which also feature a lot in my collection. The creation of every Ruwaya piece starts with the stone. I handpick precious stones that appeal to me through their energy, colour and radiance. The piece is handcrafted around the stones which are positioned in such a way that best represent their natural beauty.
Can you tell us about the launch collection?
It’s made up of three parts and each collection tells its own story. Dujaan is the premier collection and each piece is dramatic. Marari is a collection inspired by the tradition of long chains, often worn by Arab women - symbolic of everlasting love. Meaning “shining”, Nayra
takes the signature style of Dujaan, and applies it to more delicate pieces, so you can make a statement every single day, not just on special occasions.
What is your vision for the brand?
“The creation of every Ruwaya piece starts with the stone. I handpick precious stones that appeal to me through their energy, colour and radiance”
I really want true lovers of jewellery to wear Ruwaya. People who have an eye for something beautiful and creative. I really want my brand to be known as something special in the industry.
What advice do you have for aspiring designers or for people who want to change career paths to achieve their dreams?
For me I was very lucky because I had this opportunity to start my own line but I will say that it’s so important to do what you love so if the opportunity presents itself to chase your dreams then you have to take a risk and do it.

City Oasis It really feels like your own private sanctuary where you can’t hear the buzz of the city and there’s nothing more relaxing than having a drink as you unwind in the cooling pool. The perfectly manicured but still forest-like grounds provide a superb getaway experience. And after a long day of sightseeing, what better way is there to finish off the day?

There’s no faulting the service this property provides. Known as the land of smiles, Thailand has a reassuring friendliness about it. And it is proven so in every aspect of your stay at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit. Whatever we needed, it was met with warmth and a smile from ear to ear.
Dine Like A Local This is an absolute must! The hotel offer a cooking class for you to enjoy local fare at Basil - one of the many award-winning restaurants. We got to enjoy a private class with the chef where we cooked Prawn Tom Yum soup, followed by chicken with basil stir fry. Such a great treat.
The Grande Spa is another addition to the hotel’s impressive portfolio of luxury experiences. From invigorating Thai massages to the gorgeous smells permeating the grounds, this is the quintessential spa environment. There’s a real sense of purity, stillness, and silence that work wonders to create a refuge for the body and mind.
Down And Out You can’t beat the location. In fact, the concierge go out of their way to highlight the best the city has to offer. We had a full blown itinerary to get through (which we got through via the very safe, reliable tuk tuks which you can find pretty much anywhere around the city) and the concierge made sure we had an umbrella at hand alongside bottles of water when needed. The city is filled with colourful history and exciting sites, which are on your doorstep.

As the saying goes,
‘you only get one chance to make a first impression.’ Luckily for the St. Regis Abu Dhabi the hotel’s lobby is so spectacular that even the most jaded person would appreciate it. We are already impressed upon arrival, but for a hotel with 790 chandeliers we are not overly surprised. This luxury hotel evokes an art deco theme, bringing the distinctive St. Regis New York legacy to the UAE. The property cleverly manages to merge Arabic décor with classic St Regis style resulting in one very opulent hotel. The amazing lobby with its crystal chandeliers and diamond accents are a tribute to Mrs. Astor, mother of The St. Regis Founder John Jacob Astor, who had a great love of jewellery. We can only dream that one day someone will build such a grand entrance attributed to us. The hotel is situated between the 33rd and 49th floors of the prominent Nation Towers building. Each of the hotel’s 283 guestrooms are beautifully designed and furnished exuding an air of Upper East Side glamour mixed with traditional Arabic artwork. All rooms include magnificent views of the corniche and are simply breathtaking. We were shown to our room and were greeted by our very own butler. The St. Regis butler service is a signature of the hotel’s experiences throughout all its branches and is one of the wonderful things that sets this hotel apart. Coffee and tea were arranged and served to us in the room, and any other arrangements were made. This was a pleasant touch and instantly made us feel welcome. Our room was filled with all the creature comforts that you would expect from a luxury hotel. The huge white marble bathroom boasts a rain shower and a huge bathtub with a bath ritual menu on offer should you want some serious soaking time. The bed was large and unbelievably comfortable, just perfect for a five-star snooze. If you don’t feel like fighting traffic to cross the road to access the hotel’s exclusive Nation Riviera Beach Club, that’s OK as they’ve built an underground walkway for easy access. We take a dip at the beach (yes, they have their own private beach) and spend some time in the gorgeous pool that has a popular swim up bar. You can easily while away a full day here and it really makes you feel like you’ve had a holiday. If you are looking for pure relaxation then a visit to Remède Spa is an absolute must. The Remède Spa brand is well known in New York, San Francisco and Singapore, and the branch here certainly impresses. The stunning spa is a real sanctuary for guests looking to unwind in one of the 11 treatment rooms, the wet area (it features an amazing jacuzzi leave - must try) or the relaxation lounge where a menu of exotic teas is offered.

The rooms are beautiful and spacious, with lots of white marble and it follows the hotel’s Art Deco theme. After we’ve slipped into a sumptuous robe we are ushered to the Aloe treatment room by our lovely therapist, and choose the muscle relaxation oil for our Remède customised massage which has a sharp clove and orange scent designed for tired muscles. Being a customised massage, this treatment allows for you to have your needs really focused on. We ask for a deep tissue massage and our therapist works at our tired and knotted muscles using stretching techniques and strong strokes to thoroughly relax us. A great deal of attention is paid to our very sore upper back and neck where there is a lot of deep-seated tension. The whole is experience is blissful and we feel soothed from the lovely orange & clove oil. Then it’s time for our Remède Spa facial which is personalised to suit our dry skin, using products from the Remède brand which feel fresh and hydrating. Our lackluster skin is triple-cleansed, assessed and followed by a spot of microdermabrasion, a facial massage, foot massage and some extractions. A thick hydrating mask before the facial is finished off with an oxygen treatment to plump up the skin. We feel completely refreshed and our skin is glowing. We finish the treatment by reclining on a day bed in the relaxation room with lemongrass tea and fruit, looking out over the Corniche. After all that indulgence we’ve really worked up an appetite so we decide to try Villa Toscana, the hotel’s signature Italian restaurant. Be sure to enjoy a classic aperitivo at the bar before you eat, it’s all old world class and pure sophistication. The restaurant can be summed up as rustic Italian fare in an elegant setting. The décor consists of dark timber and has a slight masculine feel. It almost feels like you are enjoying your meal in someone’s grand but intimate dining room. This suddenly makes sense when it’s explained to us that the restaurant’s design is inspired by a Tuscan villa, to create the feel of visiting the home of an Italian noble at his summer residence where family and friends meet. The staff are mostly Italian and are super friendly and knowledgeable. And the food? Take your seat and prepare to have your socks blown off. The menu is vast consisting of entrees, pizza & pasta and main dishes all described with Italian flare. We start with the buffalo mozzarella and tomato salad and the spicy king prawns. The salad is served as a large portion of perfectly ripe tomatoes, pesto and possibly the best buffalo mozzarella we’ve ever tasted. The prawns arrive in a cute cast-iron pot, perfectly cooked with delicious flavours of buttery garlic and accompanied by focaccia croutons. www.ohlala-magazine.com

The décor consists of dark timber and has a slight masculine feel” For the main event we simply couldn’t go past the pasta dishes as they just sound so tempting. We settle on the agnolotti with oxtail and the lamb ragu with pappardelle. The oxtail agnolotti is served in a traditional brass pan and looks sensational. The filling is gloriously rich with pistachios added into the meaty mixture within and it’s dressed with a delicious porcini mushroom sauce. The pappardelle Siena style consisted of lamb ragu dolceforte with sage and toasted pine nuts and was a fantastic combination. The pappardelle itself was handmade in the kitchen and cooked perfectly (just a little al dente) while the ragu dolceforte was dark and rich in flavour without being overpowering and the toasted pine nuts gave it a great texture. To top it off, a succulent, perfectly cooked French lamb cutlet accompanied the pappardelle. Overall a great example of traditional Tuscan cooking. We finished this delightful meal with the restaurant’s sumptuous Magnum Tiramisu (essentially a magnum shaped ice-cream filled with delicious tiramisu). Such a brilliant idea and the perfect end to the meal. Afterwards we visit The St. Regis Bar which looks like a room out of The Great Gatsby’s mansion. You can almost feel Leonardo Di Caprio throwing his “cool, beautiful shirts” over the mock balcony. The space consists of rugged interiors, with towering bookshelves and parquet flooring. The solid oak walls and heavy masculine furniture call for the hotel’s signature drink, the St. Regis Bloody Mary which was first introduced at the original St. Regis in New York by Fernand Petiot in 1934. The St. Regis Abu Dhabi is the perfect place to stay given its central location and amazing facilities. The thing that truly sets it apart though is the warm and genuinely staff. Nothing is too much trouble and you feel well and truly looked after in the most magnificent surroundings. 74

Unique is a word that is used far too often these days but it ’s simply the only way to describe The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel, as it ’s truly one of a kind. Upon entering the hotel, you are immediately transported to a different time. A classic, old New York feeling washes over you and it ’s hard to not be completely charmed. Timeless and iconic, it ’s actually hard to believe that a hotel as special as this still exists today. The Carlyle has been a timeless Manhattan mainstay since it was built in 1930. Designed by Bien & Prince and named after British essayist Thomas Carlyle, the hotel has served an impressive list of guests and visitors since it was opened. Every American president since Harry S. Truman has visited the hotel and President John F. Kennedy maintained a suite on the 34th floor for a decade. It ’s even rumoured that Marilyn Monroe was snuck through the service entrance on the 77th Street to visit the then President after her famous rendition of “Happy Birthday ” at Madison Square Garden. If The Carlyle walls could talk they ’d certainly have some stories to tell. Everyone from royalty to Hollywood’s elite chooses the prestigious property when visiting New York and Woody Allen even plays clarinet each week in the Café Carlyle with the Eddy Davis New Orleans jazz band. You can’t get much more New York than that. The 193 room hotel is set in an art deco style, keeping the theme of when it was built and the views of Central Park are simply breathtaking. There are also residences at this grand property and the lucky people that live here are also privy to all the services that the hotel provides. We are taken up to our suite on the 11th floor by a smartly dressed elevator operator and enter our room which is classic, elegant and refined. The room feels more like an Upper East Side apartment than your standard hotel room. They’ve managed to maintain the old-world feeling of the hotel while still having every modern luxury available including huge plasma TV screens, iPod docking stations and excellent wifi. It ’s the hotel’s amenities that really set it apart though: Kiehl’s
beauty products, monogrammed bed linen for special guests and in some suites even boast grand pianos. A staff of 400 are ready to cater to your every need, 24 hours a day. The property is brilliantly positioned, just off Madison Avenue, a block from Central Park and just a ten-minute walk to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We spent a brilliant morning strolling Madison Avenue for some five-star shopping and then continued all the way down to 57th Street to visit the world-famous Barneys New York and Bergdorf Goodman. Bloomingdale’s and Henri Bendel are also not far from here so you certainly won’t be short of fabulous places to shop. The jewel in the crown of The Carlyle would have to be its famous Bemelmans Bar. If the name sounds familiar, Ludwig Bemelmans wrote and illustrated the children’s book Madeline about a mischievous Parisian girl who lives in a vine-covered house in

Paris. The Bemelmans Bar is decorated with murals depicting Madeline in Central Park, painted by the author. These are his only artworks on display to the public and instead of accepting payment for his work, he received 18 months of accommodation at the prestigious hotel for him and his family. The bar is busy pretty much every night and you’ll rub shoulders with everyone from socialites, business types, celebrities and documentary filmmakers. Bar tenders in tails will whip you up a fantastic mixed drink so be sure to try and snag a seat at the bar or one of the intimate tables while listening to the live jazz band. It ’s really the amazing staff and old world touches that make this hotel so special. Staying at The Carlyle is a truly special experience and a worthwhile splurge that will stay in your memory for years to come.

The 2016
Bentley Continental GT As the 2016 Bentley Continental GT models arrive in showrooms across the Gulf we were invited to Yas Marina for a closer look to see how they differ to the outgoing models. As it turns out, not that much…
I
t has been about a year since we reviewed the gorgeous Bentley Continental GT V8 S, and back then we were in love! While most Bentleys are about quiet refinement and power, the V8 S was about not-so-quiet refinement and power, with a glorious V8 bellow that stirred the soul when you put your foot down. So, it was interesting to experience the same model in both coupe and convertible format in this recent experience. So what has changed for 2016? Well, in actual fact, very little indeed. Extensive market research conducted on their existing client base determined that they were very happy with their Continental GTs as they were, and that they wouldn’t like to see them changed drastically. However, there were just a couple of minor suggestions… New for the 2016 model year is WiFi, now available as an option on all Bentley models henceforth, a welcome addition to those who prize their business and social lives as much as their luxury vehicles. There is also a completely new range of more elegant, modern and stylish alloy wheels to choose from too, depending on your model variant. To the untrained eye, the exterior styling is almost indistinguishable
80

from the outgoing model, but then why mess with a winning formula? The outer headlights have been raked a bit for a more streamlined effect, and the front air-splitter has been redesigned for a sportier and more assertive look. The size of the grille has also been tweaked slightly, as has the rear spoiler on certain models. It’s all very minimal. However, one of the most striking additions to the exterior design is the new ‘Flying-B’ vent on the front side panels - perhaps the easiest way to spot a 2016 model. Still present on the V8 S is that lovely muscle-car rumble (albeit with the optional sports exhaust, as with the previous model we drove) which adds such a sense of theatre to the car.
“To the untrained eye, the exterior styling is almost indistinguishable from the outgoing model, but then why mess with a winning formula?”
Diva Drives
It has the same 4.0l twin-turbo V8, and still weighs about the same, which we were surprised at, given that for a coupe the Continental is rather on the heavy side at over two tonnes, and everyone else in the industry seems to be using lightweight materials to shed the pounds, although a new gearbox improves fuel efficiency somewhat. To summarise, the new Continental looks slightly different to the old one, and is slightly more economical, and the W12 is slightly more powerful. And you can have WiFi! www.ohlala-magazine.com

The Column
Deck theHalls
In the spirit of all things festive, our columnist has come up with an essential guide to an expat Christmas in Abu Dhabi
Do you have your in-laws coming for Christmas and don’t want them to complain that it didn’t feel like a proper Christmas in the desert? Or are you home alone in Abu Dhabi whilst your family celebrate Christmas back home? Here are some ideas on how to avoid feeling Scrooged. The first step for getting into the Christmas spirit is by buying a Christmas tree and decorating it to make home feel like home. There is no shortage of decorations in the UAE (you can barely move in some of the malls with their lavish displays of flashing lights), however locating tasteful decorations is more of a challenge. If you want a classy Christmas tree, limit your colour scheme - I only decorate my tree with gold, silver and glass decorations (cunningly chocolate coins fall into the metallic category). However, given that my baby LaLa is now on the move, I’m seriously considering whether my Liberty of London glass baubles need to stay in their box this year. If you want a particularly lavish Christmas tree, take a leaf out of the Emirates Palace book and deck yours out with all the jewels you can muster. Word of warning though: you will need to hire a tree security guard. Consider attending one of the tree lighting ceremonies or carol services in and around Abu Dhabi. My personal favourite is the annual Carols in the Desert. If you still aren’t feeling the vibe, then take it up a notch and go skiing at Dubai Mall or rent an artificial snow machine (the child in me has always wanted one). However if like me you have a low tolerance for Christmas jingles, don’t even consider shopping in one of the supermarkets during the month of December (note my husband applies that advice all year round). If you want to try something different, why not break with tradition and adopt an annual Christmas morning swim in the ocean followed by a traditional Aussie lunch: a seafood barbecue with some steaks. Living abroad offers freedom from the usual trappings of holiday traditions. Take the opportunity to adopt your favourite Christmas foods from around the world, be it German stollen, or Italian panettone. 90
www.ohlala-magazine.com
If you are hell bent on a traditional Christmas dinner but you are not proficient in the kitchen, a number of hotels can provide you with the real deal: roast turkey and all the trimmings. However if you decide to go down this route, I suggest you hatch a plan to shield this information from your in-laws. I love to invite a bunch of friends around for Christmas dinner, and ask everyone to make or bring something. Make it that bit more special by insisting everyone dresses for dinner – think metallic dress with sparkly earrings and heels. If you managed to beat the queues, the Balmain x H&M beaded dresses would be perfect for this occasion. But don’t be offended when your Aussie friends turn up in their thongs and shorts. And don’t forget to organise some games like Secret Santa to get everyone in the mood. If you start to miss everyone back home whilst you are lying by the pool, remember a.) how cold it is back home and b.) what a nightmare it can be to fly/travel anytime near Christmas. If that doesn’t work, make a Skype date with your family. And if you are still feeling blue, partake in some retail therapy and wrap up some more presents for under the tree or to sneak into your stocking. Christmas is not Christmas without a stocking after all.
