THREE WAYS SUMMER HAIR

2. BEDHEAD BEACH WAVES How nice would it be to genuinely wake and walk out the front door seaside ready? The trick is to not wash your hair beforehand – if it’s too shiny it won’t give that right illusion. Your hair is more workable when it’s a day old. So as far as the parting goes, keep it centred – arrange using your fingers rather than a brush. Using a tong, twist random sections of your hair around it. As for your ends, pinch, scrunch and twist them with your fingers for texture. One quick flip and you’re done! MARC BY MARC JACOBS

ALBERTA FERRETTI

DIANE VON FURSTENBERG

Rather than looking like a cat that fell in the bath, we’re talking about the severe, ‘I mean business’ wet look. A common misconception is that you need to start off with fully drenched hair. Not so. After completely drying your hair, get a sizeable dollop of gel and run it through the front portion of your hair or use a spray wax. Using a mixed brush, comb the product in a downward motion. Get some hairgrips to set the gelled areas for a few minutes.

What was once a trend out of necessity (after the shower, duvet days, greasy hair days) has now tidied up and become the hottest go-to. But rather than just haphazardly tying up your locks, pull all your hair upwards in a long column, flat on top of your head, and smooth out the back. If you’ve got layers secure them with colour-matching pins for subtlety. Get creative with horn-like buns and twisty Mohawk knots. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Patrick Dempsey on Racing Porsche actors, few will know that Patrick Dempsey has also been racing professionally for nearly ten years. We caught up with him during a recent visit to the Bahrain

International Circuit…

Y

ou’ve been a fan of Porsche for quite some time, but how did your relationship with them develop into motorsport? PD. I started racing about 10 years ago and now to be racing at this level, especially with Porsche, is incredible. What this brand represents in motorsport is huge and so I wanted make sure I was a little bit more experienced before I started with them. A couple of years ago my deal was up with another manufacturer and it seemed like the right time to move over. I’m really excited and surprised by how much care there is and desire for me to develop as a driver. We are doing all the right things in order for me to progress. It’s very moving to me, very inspiring.

Racing for a brand like Porsche at the 24 Hours of Le Mans – what’s that like? PD. This will be my third time doing it and it is special, especially given the connection between Porsche and Le Mans. Being at Le Mans you can really see the importance of motorsport. Look at the Porsche 919 Hybrid in the LMP1 programme and what that represents, how that technology will eventually find its way to the road and already has in many ways. To be at Le Mans is magical – there’s just something that happens there – you transcend everything else in life. What are you hoping to achieve this year? PD. Le Mans is our focus for this year. I would love to be on the podium. We’ve been close in fourth and fifth but www.ohlala-magazine.com

to win you can’t make any mistakes, you have to be on it. The opportunity to race around the world with Porsche is a wonderful thing for me as an individual just to learn and understand different cultures first hand. Coming here to the Middle East from the United States especially, there is a preconceived notion about the culture but it is so multicultural here and it really opens you up to appreciate people for who they are. How do you prepare for something like endurance racing? PD. There is a lot of testing, seat time and racing. Because of the multiple classes that are going on in a race, your situational awareness has to be really focused and finely tuned. The physical conditioning is important - being in the gym, running, cardio, upper body – and so is the mental conditioning. How you live your life is how you drive and you have to be aware of that. I think that’s exciting. Tell us how it feels when you get behind the wheel and race. PD. It is physically tough. Parts of your body hurt more than others like your lower back because of the amount of pressure that you put on your brake pedal. But there’s a rhythm that you get into, a mindset. You transcend pain when you are in that zone. There is an emptiness of thought and complete focus. When you get in that place it is sublime and that is why you do it. 68

ABEAUTIFUL WORLD We spoke in depth with Sheikha hanan bint hassan Al-Khalifa about her life, her work, her inspirations, her advice and much more. It’s a fascinating glimpse back in time by an expert photographer who seems to remember every little detail about her interactions around the world.

As a child, her adventurous spirit has seen her go to places around the world with Sheikha Hanan bint her father. Later in life, she has journeyed on Hassan Al-Khalifa photo-trips to Japan, China, Vietnam and other parts of Asia, as well countries in Africa, wning her very first Europe and of course, the Middle East – to camera at the age of 12, countries like Yemen for instance where the Sheikha Hanan knew her faint-hearted daren’t explore. “I am inspired by people and places and love affair with photography was one for keeps. At a their cultures. There is so much the world time when technology can teach us, and with the experiences I go wasn’t as advanced as it is today – she would through, I always come away with something,” painstakingly work on every photograph still- she shares. “If one looks close enough, they by-still, frame after every frame and film upon will find beauty in everything.” She has recently spearheaded a photography each film. Today, she possesses the same kind exhibition entitled ‘Man and Labour’ – a of meticulous discipline in her work – collective show of works by 20 photographers, thoroughly researching her subjects before any including her photographs and was displayed photography assignment or ‘adventure’ as she at the Ministry of Labour Isa Town premises. As head of the labour studies section for the Ministry of Labour since 1977, Sheikha Hanan is currently the ministry’s director of labour relations. She has a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Southern California, USA, and a Bachelor of Political Science and Economics from Kuwait University. Sheikha Hanan is a regular participant of major photo exhibitions in Bahrain and abroad since 1995. She represented Bahrain in the Federation of International Art Professionals (FIAP) Congress in Prato, Italy and the Bahrain 2003 Heritage Exhibition held in Paris, France. If one were to observe her photographs, they will notice that Sheikha has an uncanny ability to make her subjects relax and reveal their candid side through her photography. She shares her tips on how to achieve this: “I talk to them. I do my utmost to make them comfortable with me and trust me enough to take their photograph. Photography can be very invasive for most people, and for some cultures, they even believe that when you take a photograph of them, you are ‘taking their soul’. So one must be conscious of the nuances of different cultures and their beliefs. It’s important that you respect them.” For an artist and a photographer of her calibre, I ask Sheikha what her advice is to budding photographers. She believes that, “After God, you must love your country. Because only then will you learn to love everything that’s around you. And when you’re a photographer, there is always a surprise waiting at every turn.”

“After God, you must love your country.”

soCiEty Interview

W

ere you always interested in music? HL. Yes but not necessarily music but definitely entertainment! I’ve been told that I had the gift of depicting stories whether via stage presence or written [material]. So it was more about finding exactly what avenue of entertainment I would land in. My career began shortly after I won a silver medal for the school district of over 20,000 students. After that, I realised I was blessed with the uncanny ability to not only write but I’ve been told that I could do so at such an extremely passionately level which could captivate readers. How was it like growing up? HL. Growing up was an adventure. Where I’m from you have to adapt to your circumstances and surroundings at a moment’s notice. I was surrounded by siblings, family and friends so it seemed as if there were new ‘episodes of life’ daily. The common factor growing up was not music surprisingly but sports – everyone I hung out with was a type of athlete. So everyone would go to practice for sports, and if you didn’t go you wouldn’t have friends – cut and dry. Sports had such a heavy influence in my area because it provided an outlet and escape from all the surrounding conflicts and troubles. Can you cite some highlights of your career? HL. To name a few: Reverbnation Number One trending artist in the world, Virgin Megastore Bahrain’s topselling hip-hop/ R&B artist of the year 2013, Virgin Top 10 selling CD – all genres 2014; meeting Akon, passing my album to and having a chat with T Pain, interviewing Kelly Rowland, congratulating John Legend and hanging out with his band, performing in Switzerland, being acknowledged by hip hop legends, performing in various parts of Europe, and completing the track ‘International Ace’ which took close to a year to complete. What does it take to make it in the music industry? HL. It takes savvy and persistence. There will be a thousand ‘no’s’ before the first ‘yes’. Believing in your vision and being willing to work at it also goes a long way. What’s next for you? HL. Music videos, a three-country-ten-city tour and a bunch of other things that are better to just see instead of talking about. 74

A comfort zone can be crippling. Go hard and don’t fear failure because it cannot truly exist until you decide to quit. Is there a formula for success in music... in life? HL. happy Birthday Ms Gemini Discover what Giovanni sees in your stars…

GEMInI’S AT A GLAnCE those under the sign of Gemini are often seen as intelligent and outgoing people, with a particular ability to demonstrate a multitasking attitude that sets them aside from others in the Zodiac. Rational and committed, they are not easily disrupted and often have a bright and sunny nature that makes them a very appealing and enchanting partner. the downside to this is that although they have a variety of interests, they tend to burn energy quickly and as a consequence it means their attention span is quite short. Geminis need to have their interest continually sparked as they surrender to boredom easily. they seek out variety in order to remain happy and this means an active social life.Freedom is an important requirement for everyone born under the sign of the twins, which can make them difficult long partners. Intellectual, versatile and communicative, on the negative side they can be inconsistent, malicious and superficial.

GEMINI

There’s going to be a lot going on in your world this month and you’ll find yourself celebrating more than just your birthday. Doors you initially found to be closed will suddenly start opening and opportunities will literally be throwing themselves at you over the coming weeks. On the work front, you could hit an initial snag when someone tries to take the credit for a project you initiated, so you need to be quick to shoot down the suggestion, especially for the benefit of your superiors. Otherwise, June is going to be pretty plain sailing and you’ll find yourself set up rather nicely for the remainder of 2013.

CANCER

Emotions run high when a family member’s accusations leave you having to defend yourself, even though you have not really done anything wrong. It seems that false information about your actions has leaked through to people who are not really keen on seeing you happy. Once you manage to clear your name of these accusations you should consider dealing with those who have spread the rumours in the first place. You might find a conversation is all it takes to sort this out.

LEO

Lions roar, and when they do, others tend to listen. This month you are going to find yourself having to really stand your ground if you are to get an initiative across. It’s always best to keep your cool where you can but because of your fiery temperament you can sometimes find that quite hard to do. On the romance front, a reunion with a loved one who has been absent for a while is going to lift your spirits, Get ready to be surprised to what happens next in the relationship.

VIRGO

Your career is moving along at quite a pace right now and there are a few important decisions that you need to address despite having little time to do so. Family matters are concerning you and there is every indication that you might need to take a loved one aside and correct their opinion over something you have done. Also, it would seem you have a rival when it comes to the affections of a new man or woman in your life, a good impression would help.

LIBRA

A recent career move that you might have been a little nervous about has turned out to be one of the best things you have done and you are really enjoying yourself at the moment in your work. However, you might need to watch your back as there are those who will be a little jealous of your enthusiasm and desire. You certainly don’t want to make any enemies but at the same time make sure you stand your ground and ensure that your colleagues know you are not the type of person to be undermined.

SCORPIO

Sad to say that a few of you might be feeling a little disappointed with the way a new relationship has turned out of late. The initial “honeymoon” period is slowly starting to wear off and a few of the things you used to be able to ignore are starting to grate a little on you. Before things go any further you might need to take some time out to analyse the situation and decide whether there is really any future in this affair.

SAGITTARIUS

In the grand scheme of things, June might pass by as being a fairly insignificant month for you but there will be one or two subtle events that may not have any impact immediately but will carry significance later on in the year. The biggest concern could be around a child that you are feeling particularly protective over. The problem is unless you talk to him or her, you’re not really going to do anything else but worry yourself with speculation.

CAPRICORN

You are feeling quite argumentative this month and that could be because there are several areas in your life right now that you are not very happy with, which in turn is leading you to take it out on those closest to you. Be restrained, if you can, or it won’t end well. The answer might come to you in the form of a romantic meeting when a new love interest comes onto the scene and suddenly everything changes. Of course, there could be some compromises you need to meet.

AQUARIUS

Circumstances beyond your control are going to force you to address the way you have been behaving towards a loved one recently. Getting your own way has become a little bit of an art form for you but when your partner suddenly rebels midway through the month, you are quickly going to have to change your approach. Taking people for granted is never a wise thing to do and if they realise what you are up to then don’t be surprised if they decide to take matters into their own hands. Unless you want to have to face a major confrontation then revise your actions.

PISCES

A planned journey this month could be hurt by financial difficulties and this will cause you further rows as you fail to accept the limitations of your financial situation. Sometimes, we have to accept that there are certain things that we are simply unable to do, and pushing into difficulties just to prove a point won’t help at all. All you will achieve is to cause yourself greater stress and this in turn will have a negative impact on the people closest to you.

ARIES

There is no doubting that the previous few months were difficult ones for you in many respects and you were forced to deal with a great number of complicated issues and unforeseen hurdles. Thankfully, the remainder of 2013 promises to be a lot better and the first improvements should be on the financial front when a windfall lands in your lap sometime towards the end of June. Overall it looks to be pretty much plain sailing from now on.

TAURUS

This is likely to be a good month for you in any aspect concerning work and finances especially if you are considering changing career, or learning a new trade. Relationship wise you will find that the strains of the last few months will also finally be put behind you, meaning that you can move forward with a partner and enjoy the summer without any pressures. The one area you need to keep an eye on is your health. Be on your guard about the pounds piling up, and if you notice it happening then get down to the gym. OHLALA!
