elcome to the August issue. I feel at this point in the year, we all need an injection of energy to get us through the stagnation so true of this time of year. Putting the fatigue-inducing temperatures aside,

let’s talk mid-season fashion. We oft find it an odd point in the season because we’re approaching the new, but are still going through stacks of summer wear too. In this edition of Ohlala, we embrace the ‘in between’ fashion which has the optimism and sunniness of summer but also the chic moodiness of autumn. We’ve highlighted what we feel best represents that sophisticated tension between the two by having a chat with Josep Font of Delpozo and lathering over the pre-fall collection. ell us about Delpozo’s PF17 collection? What was your inspiration? I’ve always been a fan of Oscar Niemeyer’s work. There is a building in Asturias, in northern Spain where I wanted to integrate his work in one of my collections. His architecture is so minimal, yet so organic, and it becomes very visually impactful. I wanted to translate that into my PreFall collection with the volumes and as well as the colours of red, navy, ivory. In each collection, I mix two concepts, and for this season, besides Niemeyer’s architecture, I looked at a different source of inspiration which was Mary Delany. She was an old woman who made ‘découpage’, a form of collages based from small pieces of papers creating beautiful floral still lives. That is the idea behind the patchwork for this season. Do your travels influence your work? Absolutely, when I’m travelling I’m continuously on the lookout for any possible inspiration. For example, for one season, I was walking downtown New York at night and caught a glimpse of an art gallery with these portraits that I found fascinating. As it was closed I noted down the name of the artist and when I got back to the hotel I googled him. I discovered this Russian contemporary painter that created enchanting pieces and he became my inspiration for that season. Where is your favourite city and why? It’s hard to say, I’m from Barcelona, and I find an ease to be there. However, it has been quite touristy in the recent years and has lost a bit of its magic. Still, it is my favourite city above all. What do you think are the fundamental differences between Madrid, Barcelona and New York in terms of fashion? Barcelona, near the ocean, has this ease to it, and people are more laid back in their aesthetic, especially compared to

As for New York, it’s so urban and the culture is so focused on exercise, it has a very strong sense of the urban and an athletic style. Which city do you feel has the best fashion? Paris, without a doubt. Which city’s architecture most influences Delpozo’s shapes and structure? Barcelona. The modernist architecture and art have influenced how I design. It’s a fusion of structure and nature, all in one. Which celebrity figure would you love to dress in Delpozo? I’ve been lucky enough that many amazing women have chosen to wear Delpozo – Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore, even Princess Deena. What do you always have to pack when you go on your travels? My iPad where I can watch movies, read, check the news, social media and emails. Where haven’t you been in the world that you’d like to visit? Australia. It’s been my inspiration for my recent resort collection. I’d love to travel to see Lake Hillier. 28

Of course I’m also so excited to be able to share this journey with all my followers. I always love travel, but a first for me on this particular trip was a visit to the MAC labs. Like many of my followers, although I wear makeup every day, I have never been behind the scenes of a massive beauty brand, to where the actual products are designed and produced. I discovered the different steps involved in making a lipstick, and it was a once in a lifetime chance.

Known for her confidence and sophistication, influencer, Fouz Al Fahad (aka The Real Fouz) has teamed up with beauty power house MAC to create a deep, dusty rose lipstick. We caught up with her to find out how this cool collaboration came about. What is your first MAC memory? I can easily remember the first time I walked into a MAC store. I was looking for a lipstick and blushes. The sensation I had when I walked in was like when you enter a candy shop and you don’t know where to start. Ever since that day, I’ve been hooked. What was it like to collaborate with MAC? Working with the MAC brand is terrific, I feel like a little girl in a fairy tale. Some girls dream of creating their own fashion line; I have many dreams, of course, but the creation and launch of my own lipstick is up there on the list. It will be an achievement for my career. It’s also important to say that I think this collaboration wil send a positive signal for the girls from the region, and my followers, many of whom work hard in pursuing their own creative projects. Can you give us any hints on what your lipstick will be? I’ll give you three words and then you can let your imagination take you as far as you want, but let’s say: feminine, classy and powerful. 44

Taming The Beast Sort your frizz out this summer with our top tips that will save your hair and your sanity.

1. The tricks to combatting frizz starts with washing your hair and the products you use after. When washing your hair, for the second wash use cool water instead of warm. This will help to close the hair cuticle which in turn will decrease frizz because heat on hair opens the cuticle. It’s also really help if you use products that contain Keratin as they help the hair cuticle to sit flat to avoid frizzing. If you have fine hair, these products may leave your hair a bit flat so make sure you use some hair mousse or a volumising product to avoid limp hair and it’s also best to leave hair to dry naturally when you can. Once your hair is dried, apply a serum to your ends and to those areas with flyaways. 2. Hair serums

are such an underrated product as many people think they will leave the hair greasy. All you need is a really small amount, rub together in your palms and then distribute. Don’t overload your hair with products as it will end up oily.

3. Another great tip for taming the most unruly hair is to use an old make up brush and hairspray. Once you’ve styled your hair the way you want it, spritz a powder or bronzer size make up brush with hair spray and gently run it over your hair to tame the flyaway’s. This is an expert tip used by celebrity make up artists all over the world and it really works. 4. There are plenty of de-frizzing treatments available at

many hair salons, but be sure to find the right one. Some can be very costly and hard to maintain and they growing out process can be a nightmare and you really don’t want to damage your hair so make sure you do your research as to what will suit your hair type and choose formaldehyde free

treatments. Brazillian Blowout and Hair Botox are two that we love. 5. One of the main causes of hair frizzing is dryness. To maintain great looking hair without the dryness a mask is essential to use at home and there are some great in salon ones also. A renaissance revelation

The 157 rooms and suites at this luxury hotel each offer an excellent amount of space, thanks to the unique layouts of the four buildings. We were to call the huge Renaissance Room home for a few days, and there was nothing but excitement upon entering. Firstly, this accommodation is the hotel’s largest guest room, being beaten only by the sprawling suites. You can tell that the room has been newly refurbished, however, what we loved about it was the fact that it still managed to reflect the architectural style of the Renaissance Building. There’s an overwhelming amount of Italian restaurants in Prague. Why? Well, we soon learn that it’s simply because the Czech people just happen to love Italian food. At the Four Seasons Hotel Prague, it’s CottoCrudo, a modern Italian restaurant, bar and lounge that flies the 5-star food flag. This is also the restaurant where you’re served breakfast. Now, let us reveal something. We’re not always ones to wake up for breakfast when travelling - sometimes you just want a lie-in, right? But, here, we were so in awe of the food and service at breakfast that we made it down every morning. Firstly, breakfast is served until 11am from a lavish buffet of local and continental favourites alongside a delicious a la carte menu. Try the mind-blowing Belgian waffles or the mouthwatering egg white frittata. In the evening, CottoCrudo is just as casually sophisticated. The menu is made up of Italian and Mediterranean dishes including fresh seafood, homemade pasta, choice meat cuts and artisan products from the Piedmont and Tuscany regions of Italy. Let’s dive into some of our favourites; the creamy Burrata was a big win at the table as was the creative and tasty red prawns with cabbage salad, parmesan cheese and hazelnut. The absolute standout was the Saffron risotto with roasted seabass, buffalo mozzarella and green pea purée - packed with flavours, textures and colour, this dish really took our breath away. For dessert, test (and treat) your taste buds with the chilled strawberry and rhubarb soup with sorrel ice cream and chocolate ganache - it’s just as good as it sounds! We have to give a huge mention to all the staff at CottoCrudo, who served us with the utmost professionalism, patience and the biggest smiles. A special shout-out goes to Martin who really went that extra mile every time; for sharing his insider Prague stories and always being so friendly and observant to all our food requests and social conversations. He made the start to our day much more positive and inspired!

panelling, hand-painted stencilling and a bohemian crystal chandelier, were all elements that kept us in good spirits every time we came back to the hotel after a day out discovering the city. Space is not the only thing that this room has. Luxury Asprey amenities are abundant in the large marble bathroom with a lovely, deep bath tub, spacious shower, excellent make-up mirror (ladies, you’ll be impressed), whilst the room has a refrigerated private bar, all your usual hot and cold refreshments and minibar goodies, a plasma screen with a good channel selection, and a fabulous seating and working area. Oh, and let’s talk about the bed - the down duvet and pillows were simply heaven to slip into after a day of walking - we slept like babies! We’d highly recommend this room for couples, friends and small families who want a taste of the traditional mixed with modern comforts.

Ava Spa had just opened a little before our trip to Prague and we were intrigued to experience the spa culture that the Czech are so famous for. The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa’s La Pergola restaurant takes you on an Italian journey so authentic, you don’t need to leave the island for your dose of the Med.

a Pergola is something of an institution in Bahrain. It’s been the go-to Italian restaurant for decades and has consistently served up much promise in each dish. In true Italian style, we were greeted with a flurry of excitement and hospitality by Restaurant Manager, Lorenzo Sabella, who showed us to our table as if we were extended family. The décor is simple but affecting: there are whole walls of pained pictures of Italian scenes that evoke the beauty and warmth of the country. As we sit Lorenzo gave us his spiel on the menu – as a former chef, he knew his stuff. We started off with a trio of salads: Insalata Mediterranea (a colourful dish of green salad with marinated grilled vegetables) which at first, was too pretty to eat and was superbly flavourful, the Insalata di Spinaci Novelli (baby spinach, roasted pumpkin, ricotta cheese, toasted pine seeds) which was lovingly doused in olive oil where the spinach offered an earthiness to the smooth and velvety cheese and lastly, the Insalata La Pergola (a concoction of iceberg lettuce, avocado dressing, parmesan cheese, Roma tomatoes) which had all your salad essentials in one but tasted miles better than your standard salad courtesy of the Italian flare applied in the preparation. Our mains spoke to a definitive selection of what is truly Italian cuisine. A pizza made up of ricotta cheese, spinach and truffle oil with doughy crust and crunch with perfect and hearty clumps of cheese on each slice and a smattering of spinach leaves. This was light and airy (thank you truffle oil) and despite being a loaded carb, didn’t make us want to keel over from food fatigue. Up next was a dainty and elegant Ravioli all’Anatra dish which comprised of homemade ravioli stuffed with duck and truffle in sage butter (heavenly), parmesan fondue and roasted pine nuts. It was the kind of dish that you just don’t want to end because every last bite is moreish – a true highlight on the menu. In addition, we had the Cernia La Pergola (grilled hammour with mushrooms and shrimp sauce on mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables) which was swimmingly fresh and packed with goodness and portion. This was our wild card order and it definitely didn’t disappoint. Of course, there’s always room for some dolce, isn’t there? We indulged in a Torta alla Nutella e Mascarpone – wait for it – a chocolate cake with cream of Nutella and mascarpone cheese coated in chocolate ganache. Sinful but oh so sweet and beautifully presented. Mille grazie!

H e a lthy & H e a r ty Chef Kostas Magoulas, of Mylk & More repute has taken over the vegan scene in Bahrain with his alternative milks and niche recipes. He talks us through his vision.

y partner and I had this vision not only to meet the needs of lactose intolerant people, we wanted to satisfy everybody,” says Chef Kostas, who came to Bahrain just over six months ago and has stamped his presence with his enthusiasm for life and alternative milks. Mylk & More is a true all natural dairy ‘mylk’ – an alternative to milk – think saffron milk, pistachio milk and beetroot milk, stocked at Roots and Food Lab among others and soon to be at high profile supermarkets. It has taken Bahrain by storm, being a hit across every level of the community from expats to locals. With their being both a health and lifestyle need for alternative milks, Chef Kostas came at the right time to develop his brand. After participating at a number of events, Chef Kostas has blazed a trail and enjoyed warp speed success as a result of solid communication both internally and externally. “How fast and responsive you are plays a big part. You need to be as reactive to something bad happening as something good. Brainstorming is key too, it’s all about being thoughtful with your products and listening to the customers,” he notes. With a background in luxury hotels, Chef Kostas knows how much hard work is needed for a slick operation, from the lowest to the highest link in the business, but it is with his expert knowledge and attention to detail that has allowed Mylk & More to snowball into what it is today. The ‘more’ in Mylk & More will see lactose and dairy free cheese coming soon as well as other healthy/vegan alternatives like the recipe he has given here and of course, his famous Kombucha tea. Well, locals might hunt me down, but this is the ultimate healthy Balaleet alternative! Preparation Time: 5 minutes Cooking Time: 5 minutes Total time: 10 minutes Servings:2 Type: Breakfast Ingredients 100 gr soft Tofu 200 gr rice vermicelli, cut and semi cooked Saffron Salt Cardamom Pepper Olive oil Coconut sugar 2 tbsp Instructions In a ceramic pot, add 2 tbsp of olive oil over high heat till hot. Add the tofu and start scrambling in whisk style (like eggs). Add salt & pepper and cook till it gets quite brown on all sides for the taste to strengthen. Optionally, you can add some soy sauce. In another pot, add 1 tbsp of olive oil, the half-cooked vermicelli, salt, pepper, cardamom and saffron as to your liking and mix well over medium heat. Cook for maximum 2 minutes, add coconut sugar and remove from heat. Place the scrambled tofu atop vermicelli and serve immediately. Enjoy.

The New BMW X4 BMW have once again created a quality offering worthy or their illustrious brand.

ho doesn’t enjoy the BMW experience? Of course there are those who are fiercely loyal to other premium brands, however, what cannot be disputed is the first class German engineering and technology that goes into the construction of this brand’s quality creations. Whether discussing a 4x4, saloon, hatchback or coupé, pride and care has been taken to ensure a worthy offering of the highest standard in all segments of BMW’s motor vehicles. When we at Ohlala were offered the opportunity to test drive the new BMW X4 compliments of Euro Motors, we were honestly excited to get behind the wheel. We have test driven several BMWs in the past which have set a high standard of excellence and level of expectation. We predicted nothing less from their latest achievement. At first glance it is obvious the new X4 is based on the technical blueprint of the X3. The overall character of the new vehicle is sportier in appearance, showcasing a progression in the evolution of the design. From front on, the large air intakes, character lines in the front apron, signature twin headlamps and frontal LED fog lamps ensure a bold presence and an instantly recognisable demeanour on the road. The roofline adds to the dynamic exterior, plunging from front to back in the smooth fashion of 74

a sporting coupé. From the sides, the split swag lines running along the flanks accentuate the machine’s sleek and muscular curves. Looking at the broad, low set rear end of the car, the L-shaped LED lights are unique to the X4 and the overall design finishes of its bold appearance perfectly. Slipping inside, the sense of comfort was instant. The lowered front seats create the feeling of a classical sports coupé whilst still giving one a commanding view of the road. A blend of sportiness and exclusivity is the result of the designers’ efforts and one feels spoilt simply sitting in the cockpit. The sports leather steering wheel felt great in our hands, edging us to get on the road. Premium selected materials, subtle electroplated accents, and a high gloss panel look along with aluminium trim strips in the wood paneling, all contributed to the immaculately constructed interior. The X4 is fitted with the Radio Professional with iDrive Controller and central display. The impeccable ergonomics to be found inside the X4 include the touch sensitive surface of the new iDrive Touch Controller, which allows for the operator to use their finger to write letters for text inputs such as navigation destinations. We found the system to be very efficient and straight forward to use. There is space for up to three adults to sit comfortably in the back and the 500 – 1400L loading capacity of this vehicle is very impressive. The BMW X4 comes standard with an automatically opening tailgate, which

can be specified as an option with the extra convenience of the Smart Opener, which allows it to be opened with a movement of the foot. But how does she drive? In one word, superbly! One is immediately excited by the acceleration ability and speed on offer. The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology of the state-of-the-art engines on offer with the X4, promise superb performance married with exceptionally low fuel consumption. Our model, housing the flagship petrol engine unit, boasts 225kW/306hp and peak torque of 400Nm. The BMW X4 xDrive35i requires just 5.5 seconds to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h. We were truly blown away and to think, this is not the most powerful of the engines on offer! Beside from the amazing traction control, perfect cornering abilities and overall smooth ride on offer, there are numerous safety and assistance features to be found. The BMW ConnectedDrive features include the fullcolour BMW Head-Up Display, the anti-dazzle High Beam Assistant and Driving Assistant Plus, including Lane Departure Warning, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Preventive Pedestrian Protection and a Collision Warning System. One can feel relaxed in the fact you and your family are in safe hands whenever on the roads. We set out on this BMW adventure with high hopes and expectations. Many use this good old trick to get their exes back, but in reality it’s there to provide detachment from your relationship and see the bigger picture with a new set of eyes. Sometimes the end result is pretty, when you realise your ex is your forever, or maybe, you’re destined to walk away from it all, keeping your standards high.
