“The best things in life are free. The second best are very expensive.” ~ Coco Chanel
What do you wear to feel confident? I have a couple of dresses, which I have designed myself. It is difficult not to feel genuine or confident wearing your own designs. Fail-safe pieces A pair of good quality comfy mid-heel neutral pumps or sandals. They go with most outfits, last all day and don’t emphasise my short legs. Most coveted closet For work, I admire Victoria Beckham’s simple and elegant style; quality fabrics in simple cuts. Off duty, I would covet Kate Moss’ layered Londoner look as I am often at my happiest when chilling in jeans and a simple tee. Designer quote you live by “The best things in life are free. The second best are very expensive.” by Coco Chanel Top three beauty essentials I rely on my Dior mascara and Chanel liquid eyeliner; without these, my pale eyes just look tired. I also have super sensitive skin and so aside from my superfood smoothies, I use Shu Uemura’s Cleansing Oil as it’s gentle but effective. Style Advice I prefer to invest in a few good quality timeless pieces, which easily coordinate with the rest of my wardrobe. If I feel the need to make an outfit more interesting, accessories are the best way to add a splash of on-trend colour or print. www.ohlala-magazine.com

The designer duo debuted their Haute Couture Fall-Winter 2014-15 at the J Autumn Fashion Show, which transformed the most famous architectural wonder and the symbol of the fashion capital, the Eiffel Tower, into the world’s newest catwalk. “We wanted to show something different for Paris, so we came up with designs that we feel would appeal to elegant women everywhere,” says Creative Director, Hayaa AlFadhel. Lady Liberty A perennial pioneer of colour, luxury accessories designer, Corto Moltedo chats to Kirsty Edwards-Harris about his artistic ode to freedom.
Why choose fashion?
Corto Moltedo. I started designing in 2004 when I saw a hole in the market that I knew I could fill. At the time there wasn’t anything for our generation. I wanted to do something for my friends since they were tired of wearing the older bigger brands and not seeing something that defined our generation and our time. Who are your favourite fashion designers? CM. I admire the relentless, hands-on approach of Mr Lagerfeld and the personal approach of Giorgio Armani. Which fashion icon do you most admire? CM. Priscilla Presley and my mother. They’re important to me for their extreme sense of elegance. What famous occasion would you most like your pieces to be seen at? CM. I love seeing my pieces worn especially at musical events. Music is very important for me; it is not only an inspiration but also a characteristic of my brand identity – my iconic cassette clutch can testify this! What motto do you live by? CM. Don’t do it unless you feel it with your gut. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? CM. My grandmother Ninetta, an artist with a strong love for patterns, flowers and aesthetics, always told me art brings beauty to the world in troubled times. Fashion represents art and true creative artistic expression to me. Beautiful fabrics, architectural shapes and colours are all essential elements. Just like a painting, you can see the designer’s vision and what they are trying to express through their collections. What’s the concept behind your brand? CM. Redefining notions of luxury in the accessories market with our own signature blend of pop-luxe chic. Who chooses your pieces? CM. The bags are designed for the traveller – one that is always on the move. I have bags for the Corto girl who is taking the next flight to Paris or New York, bags for the girl that needs a bag for 46

the night out in Paris, and the pieces for the girl making her elegant appearance at events in New York, such as art openings. Tell us more about the current AW collection? CM. I was inspired by the Statue of Liberty and the idea of ‘freedom’. The world is experiencing moments of liberation, legalisation, openmindedness and freedom of speech. The recent years have seen many big steps being taken all over the world, particularly in America. This is not in direct correlation
to my collection, however Lady liberty for me stands for all of the exciting developments, plus more. With regard to materials – orange is the new black! Python is a continuous theme in all my collections. Every season there’s a new colour of python in the collection. It’s quite a beautiful skin to work with for its texture and depth. The scales on the skin give it a unique feeling to each creation that comes out of it. It’s also a more affordable compromise than crocodile skin (which also gives a similar unique effect). Ultimately, I like the pattern on snakes! What are your favourite pieces? CM. This season I really love my Hudson and Liberty bags as they have all the elements I would want from a shoulder bag. I had to introduce both of them, as I could not bring myself to editing one of them out of my collection. The stitching detail on Liberty and the handles on Hudson are some of my favourite elements in the collection. Sometimes I wish I could wear them, but alas they are for my clients! What can we expect from the Spring-Summer 2015 Collection? CM. My next collection brings the juxtaposition of vibrant colours with simple lines and neutral accents that will exemplify the Corto girl. What’s next for you and your brand? CM. I’d like to see the brand with a strong Middle Eastern, Asian and American presence – basically global presence to propel the brand forward. I’m investing in countries that are known to understand quality and the construction process of bags. I see the brand growing to accessories like eyewear, as I’m a huge eyewear user, collecting sunglasses and eyeglasses for the longest time, and collaborations. I would love to collaborate with mass products like AllStars or Vans. I love both their shoes as they were part of my upbringing so there’s a sentimental element. A collaboration with a car company or a nice cosmetics brand like L’Oreal would be fun as well. Can you offer advice for aspiring fashion designers? CM. Those who start a new project should be patient and wait before fully developing their own project. Never commission your work or, as an alternative, choose the best working team. Any last word? CM. Follow my Instagram account and see the behind the scenes process every season of each collection. I love to show our friends what is going on at the atelier! @ cortomoltedo.

A Perfect Jimmy Choo’s creative director Sandra Choi on evolving the brand, current trends and the luxury market in the Middle East. by laura hamilton
You’ve been involved in Jimmy Choo for over 20 years. How has the company evolved? SC. When you are in the business it is hard to notice the changes as you are immersed in it. We have continued to grow the brand ambitiously in terms of both product and stores building on the success of the past, which we are immensely proud of. Obviously my role has changed as I now have to juggle leading the creative design process across all product categories with being a public spokesperson for the brand, which is a real honour. Jimmy Choo is a brand with such elasticity - we are always open to new projects and product extensions. This past year has been especially busy. We have just launched our new store concept globally, I am really pleased with it especially our New Bond Street Townhouse, which is spread over three floors and houses the whole world of the Jimmy Choo woman. I wanted our new space to be a luxurious environment that would combine the refined detail of an haute 48
OHLALA!
couture salon with the intimacy of a fantasy closet. David Collins Studio has the ability to create incredible spaces that are glamorous, sophisticated and yet extremely comfortable, and I knew that they would be able to translate my vision to our new retail design. We launched our Made-to-Order service earlier in the year, which allows customers to customise shoes from a family of four signature styles choosing the heel height, fabric and colour. For the final word in personalisation customers are able to monogram the soles of their Made-to-Order shoes with up to four letters or symbols. Our men’s business continues to grow and we were very excited to launch our first men’s fragrance, Jimmy Choo MAN in September and unveil Kit Harington as the face of our campaign, he embodies the essence of who the Jimmy Choo man is – innately masculine and someone who doesn’t try too hard.
www.ohlala-magazine.com
What are the current trends in the shoe industry? SC. For Spring-Summer 2015 there is a strong tribal influence and a celebration of 70s styling. Flats are still important, but there is a movement towards more architectural and sculptural heels. Proportions are being experimented with, heavy platforms, track soles and there is still a sports luxe influence out there. As a creative director, how involved are you in the day-to-day designing? What do you miss the most about being more hands on? SC. I have always had a great team supporting me working across all the categories, but I have always been handson and hope it will always remain that way. Design and innovation are my passions, and I pay meticulous attention to detail. I still try to sketch by hand many of the key new silhouettes in each season’s collections and create the mood board for each collection’s inspiration. The storytelling is very important to me, and something I have been focusing on enhancing in our seasonal presentations. Which direction is the brand going? SC. I am focused on evolving the brand and building on the success of the past 18 years by keeping Jimmy Choo relevant, innovating the product and keeping the fantasy alive for our customers. www.ohlala-magazine.com
Accessories are integral to fashion and luxury customers in the Middle East, it is a form of selfex pression and they are quite daring with their choices. Are shoes inegral to an outfit? SC. Yes! They are integral to any outfit and have the power to instantly transform a look. I plan all my outfits starting with the shoes and may change them a number of times throughout the day depending on what I am doing. What is your own personal style? SC. I am quite laid back, but I still like to dress up. I keep to quite a neutral palette and have a bit of a daytime uniform of skinny jeans and t-shirts or silk tops. I really appreciate tailoring and innovative silhouettes. I am a big collector of jewellery as well. Has your Chinese heritage influenced your style, or approach to work? SC. I don’t think so as I was born in the Isle of Wight and moved back to Hong Kong when I was very young till I was 13 before returning to England and studying in London. Hong Kong definitely opened my eyes to
culture and energy, but I really consider myself British and draw influences from all around me. What is the market like in the Middle East for luxury brand shoes? SC. Accessories are integral to fashion and luxury customers in the Middle East, it is a form of self expression and they are quite daring with their choices - often experimenting with colour, embellishment and exotics. What is the future like for Jimmy Choo? It is bright and exciting!

Four years is a long time in the music industry.
Rumer first hit the headlines in 2010 when her debut album Seasons Of My Soul launched her into the public eye and made everyone stand up and take notice at an artist who appeared out of nowhere and captivated with her vocal skills and equally captivating writing. Almost immediately she was widely supported by leading industry figures with everyone from Burt Bacharach to Elton John eulogising over her talent. Four years on and her new album Into Colour hits the charts, showcasing an artist who has emerged from a series of life changing events and is only now, by her own admission, finally confident in her skin to be the artist she really wants to be. “I think I’ve always known what I wanted to do but sometimes even if the vision is the clearest it can be you are still faced with challenges and it hasn’t been an easy journey to get where I am today – nor do I think this is the final stop!” Rumer – real name Sarah Joyce – took her performing name from one of her favourite authors, Rumer Godden and was born in Pakistan in 1979, the youngest of seven children. Her mother’s husband was a British engineer working on the Tarbela Dam project and the family lived in a self-contained expatriate community near Islamabad. When the family returned to the UK, Rumer discovered that her biological father was actually the Pakistani family cook whom her mother had been having an affair with and as an adult, she travelled back to the remote community in the hope of finding him. Regrettably he had died three months earlier. “We are all shaped by our experiences and even things we don’t directly encounter can have an effect on us. My writing – especially on this new album – is a simple extension of my oftenmeandering thoughts but it is certainly possible that my past has been given shape in some of the compositions I create.” Rumer actively continues to support her father’s widow and their children but has hidden her identity from them for fear of them becoming stigmatised.

As if that wasn’t enough to shoulder, back in 2003, just as the reality that she might become a professional musician started to take shape, her mother – who had since remarried and settled in the New Forest was diagnosed with cancer and died soon after. “I moved into a caravan to be near her but it was a difficult experience to go through.” After her mother’s death, Rumer suffered a breakdown and as she eased herself out of a depression she joined a commune in the south of England before finally moving to London to pursue her solo career. “I started working with a small folk-indie band called La Honda at the turn of the millennium but we soon went off in different directions and my mother’s deteriorating health meant I couldn’t really focus on the group. “I flirted with a few other collaborations for the rest of the decade but it wasn’t until I released Seasons Of My Soul that everything suddenly came together!” Produced by her friend and mentor, British composer Steve Brown, her debut single Slow was first featured on Smooth FM before next release Aretha made BBC 2’s Record of the Week feature and she was promptly snapped up by Atlantic Records. “It was all a bit of a whirlwind really. Everything happened so fast. One minute I was struggling on the London circuits and the next I was supporting Jools Holland on his UK tour, which included a performance at the Albert Hall!” Others championed the singer, with Burt Bacharach inviting her to his California home so he could hear her sing and then going on to write several songs for her with lyricist Steve Sater and the pair also got to visit the White House where she performed for the Obamas. “It was Christmas of that year [2010] that the label released a Christmas EP [Rumer Sings Bacharach at Christmas] and I ended a very exciting twelve months on a definite high!” A million copies from her first album and still the accolades kept coming with Rumer receiving a string of industry nominations from all over the world as well as continuing

“I like it and I hope my fans will too. We are on this journey together and I make music not just for me but for them as well. I don’t do it for the money – the age of the millionaire musician is over – I don’t do it for the ego, because I don’t think I have one. I just do it because I enjoy it. Beyond that, who knows?” to perform at some of the most prestigious venues, including Glastonbury and another session at the Royal Albert Hall for a memorial concert to film composer John Barry, which took place with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra as well as Dame Shirley Bassey and she performed “We Have All The Time In The World”. In 2012 she released her second album, Boys Don’t Cry, which was made up of a selection of songs by artists and writers from the 1970s and was a lot more “low key” than anyone expected but Rumer was grateful for some time away from the direct spotlight. “I needed a break. This helped a little. I wanted to regroup and in some ways recover. Being in 52

demand like that can really take its toll on you.” Regardless of what the “X-Factor” generation might believe, fame is a consuming animal and it clearly left its mark on this flourishing talent. “When you become famous there is suddenly nowhere to hide. People want to know everything about you – they almost feel they have a right to know, as if by putting yourself out there with your music they can justify asking any question.” Every time a microphone was thrust under her nose she was asked the same questions and there are only so many times you can deliver the same difficult answers. “I was stressed and getting more so every day. I saw a doctor and she advised me to take some time out.” So did it help? “I’m back here talking to you aren’t I?” And is her music still as important to her now as it was at the start? “Without question. I am a perfectionist when it comes to my work. And also I feel I have a duty to my fans. They are the ones who pay good money for the albums and come out to see me perform. They deserve a quality product and that is what I always strive to deliver – whether it is with a new release or a live show. “I remember when I bought my first CD as an eight-year-old child. It was Tracy Chapman’s self-titled album and it is a memory that has remained with me for almost thirty years. It influenced me and left its mark, in part
because of the quality of the release and the effect it had on my musical direction. “It’s that kind of emotion I hope to inspire in others – that feeling when they buy my record that they can sense it is something I have tried my upmost to make exceptional.” Which neatly brings us to her latest album, Into Colour, her third studio album that is out now. Is there any theme to it? “It’s another collection of my own thoughts brought together into words and music,” she smiles. “I like it and I hope my fans will too. We are on this journey together and I make music not just for me but for them as well. I don’t do it for the money – the age of the millionaire musician is over – I don’t do it for the ego, because I don’t think I have one. I just do it because I enjoy it. Beyond that, who knows?” As we finished our interview I got the sense that there was still a troubled soul inside this supremely talented individual, trying desperately to escape and discover a path that would bring her comfort. In many ways, perhaps it is that inner struggle which continues to fashion her art so well. If she were ever to find real peace I wonder if the Rumer we have known to appreciate and love would disappear forever. Her troubles fuel her talent and vice-versa. If ever there was a true enigma in music she could be it.

A LOVE STORY by CHLOE Ohlala! takes an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the debut of Chloe’s new fragrance, Love Story.
Clare Waight Keller, Chloé Creative Director
“The Chloé woman is somebody who is every woman, someone who is confident, who loves being beautiful with a very free spirit.” ~ Clare Waight Keller

OHLALA!
How would you describe the Chloé DNA? CK. Chloé’s DNA is all free spirited feminity. What defines the Chloé woman? CK. The Chloé woman radiates youth and does not need a logo to define her style. What are your main sources of inspiration when designing clothes? CK. Anything and everything although I do love to be influenced by the 60s 70s and early 80s. What is the connection between the fashion and the fragrance? CK. The connection is about a new modernity, a freshness, a sense of freedom. And also a very modern girl, who is living her life. She is really enjoying being herself. What were your main inspirations for this fragrance? CK. I really wanted to show another side of the Chloé woman. Previously, we always had
fragrances centred on yourself, on the Chloé girl, and this time it was really about who she is, her life and who she falls in love with. How would you describe the fragrance? CK. There is a fantastic fresh yet deep sensual feel to this fragrance. What is your vision of the “love story” woman? CK. The Chloé woman is somebody who is every woman, someone who is confident, who loves being beautiful with a very free spirit.
Anne Flipo, perfumer How did your passion for fragrances begin? AF. It started in a garden. Flowers had a strong appeal for me. I still love natural flowers. Later on I discovered food, and the gourmandise of tastes. The connection between taste and smell is so tight… What are your main sources of inspiration? AF. Everything can be seen as a source of inspiration. But, what is more important for me is www.ohlala-magazine.com
BEAUTY
to understand what people want from me. My real source of inspiration is to satisfy them. Do you have favourite ingredients that you always use in your compositions? AF. Orange blossom, neroli and sandalwood are the ingredients I would never be fed up with… They are so faceted and incredibly rich, that I could spend my life working on them. What is the secret to making a good fragrance? AF. A good fragrance is a delicate balance between aesthetical qualities and technical criteria. It must be recognisable, memorable, powerful, faceted… and of course, it must smell good. What does the chloé brand represent to you? AF. It is very feminine, pure, signed, romantic, sexy… Could you describe the fragrance? AF. The fragrance is very floral and pure with musky undertones, which bring sensuality to the fragrance. The family is floral. What adjectives do you associate with the perfume? AF. Feminine, sensual, bright, modern, clean, sexy, sophisticated but powerful. What does each ingredient bring to the fragrance? AF. Neroli is the name of the orange flower oil, as opposed to absolute. It is a difference of extraction. The essence or oil comes from hydro-distillation, whereas the absolute comes from solvent extraction. The neroli is fresher and cleaner than the absolute, which is warm and sensual. www.ohlala-magazine.com
Why did you choose this floral composition (jasmine and orange blossom) for the heart of the fragrance? AF. The two white flowers get along very well together, all the white flowers have a common heart, and here it conveys a very natural petal effect. What does the woody scent bring to the fragrance? AF. It brings, diffusion, strength, freshness and persistence. Can you tell us more about the stephanotis flower… AF. The stephanotis jasmine is a livingtm. It is a technology, which can capture the scent of a living flower and then reproduce it. It is like an olfactive picture of it.
Because, it comes from the southern hemisphere, it has a very seductive and sensual scent. It also symbolises happiness; it often decorates the wedding bouquet. Is there a special occasion to apply love story? AF. I think that Love Story can be an all activities/occasions/moods fragrance, it is so natural and yet so deep in the emotions it conveys that it can fit every occasion, and become the olfactive identity of the woman. What is the woman you imagine to wear Love Story like? AF. I imagine a very elegant, sophisticated, natural woman who is not afraid to express her emotions. OHLALA!

Roast Turkey with Chestnut Stuffing
The holidays wouldn’t be complete without this star addition to your dinner table. Sheraton Bahrain’s Deputy Executive Chef Francis Gomes shows us how to prepare this classic dish. Ingredients
Method
14-16 lbs Whole turkey, frozen
To prepare the stuffing, use a heavy skillet and once hot, add butter and sauté garlic and onion for a minute then add the celery and veal mince. Cook for some time until the juice from the veal has evaporated. Add chestnuts and all the herbs and the bread crumb mix well. Moisten the mixture with milk, beaten eggs and salt and pepper. • Defrost turkey and wash with running water thoroughly and wipe with a clean towel. • To stuff the turkey stand the bird on its tail end in a large bowl; using a tablespoon, stuff the neck cavity loosely with dressing Pull the neck skin over the dressing and fasten it to the body with a poultry skewer.
2 kg Bread crumbs (slices of bread cut into cubes) 1kg Whole chestnut, blanched 400 gFresh melted butter 50 gGarlic, chopped 400 gOnions, chopped 1 kg Veal mince 400 gCeleriac or celery, chopped 10 gThyme, fresh 10 gSage 10 gRosemary 1 ltrBoiled milk 4 pcsEggs, beaten Salt & ground black pepper www.ohlala-magazine.com
Turn the bird and place the neck end in the bowl; stuff the body cavity loosely with dressing. It is important to stuff the dressing fairly loosely in the bird because dressing expands during cooking. • When the turkey is stuffed preheat the oven to 170 degree Celsius, when the oven is hot put the turkey in and cover with silver foil so the skin does not get brown faster in fact it might burn also, • Check the turkey every hour it will take approximately 4 hours to get the turkey cooked. • Let the turkey rest for half an hour to retain the juice, then start carving. All things Maserati A stunning hotel, a gloriously sunny day, twisting roads through the dramatic mountains of Oman, and the entire range of Maserati’s 2015 models lined up, waiting to be driven. This could be heaven. Or, it could be Maserati celebrating 100 years of history in style!
W
hen it comes to Maserati’s current ambitions globally, perhaps the most telling moment of the event itself was when I was introduced to the Maserati Quattroporte Diesel. It may shock a lot of you to hear that Maserati are now making diesels, because Maseratis have traditionally been seen as an exotic choice – an extravagance whose purchase is driven more by the heart and passion than the brain and sensibility. What the introduction of diesel models is telling us is that Maserati means business, and wants to compete with the Germans. It means that now a Maserati can be not just beautiful and luxurious, but sensible too. And for a diesel, the Quattroporte was great. It looked, felt and rode like a Maserati, but unfortunately didn’t sound like one. It’s like seeing Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, but when she talks, Katie Price’s voice comes out! Despite plenty of low-end grunt thanks to that torquey engine, it just spoils the effect somewhat. However, it need not concern you lot too much, because you will never see the diesel in the Gulf, so, moving on… Next I found myself stepping into the awesome Quattroporte GTS. Now this is more like it! The beefy 530hp 3.8l twinturbo V8 emitted a glorious howl that rattled along the surrounding Omani mountains like angry devils as I engaged the Sport
mode and powered through the gears on the eightspeed auto with paddle shifters. It was lean, mean, and thanks to the 50:50 weight balance, handled sublimely, without ever becoming too jarring on the uneven mountain roads to Bandar Qiran. This is what a Maserati sports sedan should feel like in every way. It’s ferociously fast in Sport mode with a delicious growl from the exhausts, and yet in comfort mode it glides along like a dream. A truly beautiful car! However, it was not quite as beautiful as the next on the list – the jaw-droppingly gorgeous (and amply monikered) Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale Centennial Edition. Differentiated from the regular MC Stradale by that stunning red paint job, the Centennial edition nevertheless shares everything else with the normal MC, and that includes the Race button in addition to the Sport, which sharpens the steering and throttle response, tightens the suspension and opens up the pipes to emit a mesmerising howl from the exhausts, and the naturally-aspirated 4.7l V8, which puts out 460hp, and will propel the car to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds. Though this seems fast, for a car that looks this extreme, is the fastest in the range, and claims to be the road-going version of the Maserati Trofeo MC racing car, you can’t help but feel that it isn’t enough. A sub-four second time would have it stepping on

the toes of the Ferrari California T. This is perhaps the reason why it doesn’t, and perhaps may do in the future now that Ferrari is leaving the Fiat stable, and is now a competitor rather than a sister brand! Either way, it is still one of the most beautiful-looking cars I’ve ever driven, or seen for that matter. Honourable mention goes to the four-wheeldrive Ghibli S Q4 - despite a smaller 3.0l V6 engine, it’s still a twin-turbo, so it’s still very fast, and there’s still a deliciously racy howl from the engine. Added to the superb handling and balance, it’s an absolute hoot to drive. Maserati have come on leaps and bounds over the last few years, adding quality and technology to the style and beauty they’re already renowned for. Their production numbers are still tiny compared to other brands – 50,000 per annum, to be exact – but this only adds to their exclusivity and desirability. A truly impressive 2015 range through and through! Bring on another 100 years… 84

irst of all, I’d like to apologise if I seem a little distracted in this column. You see, as I write this, I’m literally waiting to head off to the airport to board my flight to Abu Dhabi for the Formula One GP. Being the last one of the season it’s a big deal – I’m armed with media passes, and am going to be stalking every celeb and F1 driver I can get within ten feet of! I’m going to a Mercedes event with Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, a friend of mine works for the Lotus dealership over there, so I’m going to be squeezing her for access to Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado, and I’m going to be keeping eyes peeled for Nicole Scherzinger, and any of the artists performing over the weekend. Pharrell Williams, that means YOU! Earlier in the month, I jetted off to the sleepy but beautiful Sultanate of Oman to drive not one, but the ENTIRE 2015 range of Maseratis, where my heart was completely and utterly stolen by the GranTurismo Centennial Edition, which you’ve probably already noticed earlier in this issue. Soooo beautiful… It’s a tough job, it really is! So, what news, what news? Well, Lexus have launched an absolutely stunning new coupe, the
RC, and the RC F sports variant, which I can’t wait to get my hands on. Look out for the review of that one as soon as I can grab it from the dealership! Other news; the latest edition of one of my favourite Porsche models, the Cayenne GTS, has now arrived in the Gulf, but I am absolutely devastated to learn that they’ve replaced its glorious V8 with a turbo-charged V6! Why? WHY does this have to keep happening? That naturally-aspirated V8 was my favourite thing about it! I don’t care if it’s more economical, and more powerful. And I don’t care about the polar bears! The V8 is more endangered than they are at the moment. They say it still sounds as good, and the drive is just as rewarding, but I will be the judge of that. And a harsh judge I will be… However, just to prove I’m not a complete enemy of the planet, another car that has been launched recently is the CLA 45 AMG, the sports variant of the compact four-door coupe which boasts the same incredible engine as the A 45 AMG. 360hp and 450Nm from a two-litre fourcylinder engine is simply incredible, and it’s the most powerful production engine of its kind in the world. It just proves how much power you can efficiently extract from a small engine with turbos. And I do love the polar bears really, I just get carried away sometimes… OHLALA!

A Whimsical Journey Immerse yourself in artist Faika Al Hassan’s work – her paintings of otherworldly landscapes and captivating realism depict the mundane, as well as the complexities of life. WORDS BY KARINA LAZARRAGA

aika Al Hassan didn’t really chart a path in the arts as such, and although she loved music and dance from when was young – she is in fact an economist by training. She started painting in 1996 where she took courses at the Bahrain Arts Society. Describing her art as contemporary with a fusion of realism, Faika has since come a long way as an artist from those early learning years. A recipient of the Bahrain Fire Art Exhibition Award at Bahrain National Museum in 2007 and the Al-Saafa Prize for GCC Fine Art & Lines in 2009; she has exhibited her work across the Gulf, in Australia, Syria, Yemen, the UK, Belgium, Italy, Jordan, France, Spain and Morocco. If one traces Faika’s development, one sees a devolution of mastery, style, sophistication, refinement. It is as though she is deliberately abandoning them to get at something more fundamental. In 2004, she began incorporating 'stick figures' into her paintings – a foray into what one may call 'childlike art' and which would later become more prominent in her work through the years. Some say making childlike art has always been a goal of avant-garde art. Indeed, it is only when the avant-garde artist finds the child in themselves that they can be truly avant-garde. Even the famed Picasso said it took him a lifetime to learn how to paint like a child, that is, to make an art that was close to the origins of life and thus, as original as life. In 2007, Faika exhibited for the first time – a period she says she finally felt confident in her abilities as an artist. Since then, Faika has come www.ohlala-magazine.com
to be praised for her flexibility, independence and originality. Like the American artist Jackson Pollock's work, Faika's pieces seem to overflow rather than abide by limitations, because she says, “It's important to be free and have an open mind. Don't just read one book – read several, even though they aren't your main interest, or religion or background. It's a way for you to see how others think and view things.” With eyes of a wakeful artist, Faika is inspired by people's experiences, their stories, and the expression on their faces. “I see humanity first of all – one's background does not matter.” Her latest body of work, ‘Wanderings’, is at once poignant and whimsical. The journey however is not only a physical one. They are her own ‘wanderings’, an exploration of an inner world of memories, hopes and fears. Like looking down on the world from a heaven of its own making – Faika encases her observations inside the window of a plane – using it as a frame to mirror life as it unfolds. “Whilst doing the series, I thought of those living in Syria, Iraq and other conflict areas. I realised that these souls are travelling, constantly on the move, but they don’t really know where they’re going.” By masterfully bringing to the fore that sense of self-loss, she has also uncovered the path to self-discovery. Plunging into emotional depths, Faika Al Hassan finds that this is the only way to unearth painterly beauty.

Balancing hotel management and guest satisfaction at the same time is not as easy as it sounds. When opening a hotel there are always challenges – that’s where experience is essential. Dreams Inc. Step out of your comfort zone, reach for your dreams and believe in yourself... Entrepreneur Jayne McNally shares her inspirational journey with Ohlala!
Citing the female CEOs of Yahoo, Facebook, Pepsi Co and Xerox; as well as Queen Rania, Margaret Thatcher and Indira Ghandi – all leaders who are globally recognised for their remarkable achievements – along with Forbes’ List of 200 Most Powerful Arab Women and another 200 in government – Jayne McNally believes these women are making a difference in their part of the world, “and this is what inspires me to step out of my comfort zone and reach for my dreams,” she shares with us. Jayne, originally from Liverpool has been in the Gulf since 1990 and have lived in Bahrain, Qatar and UAE; and spent over a decade working in a male dominated environment on a large contract with the US Military, where she led and managed a 60-member staff, importing food products from the US. Newly married, 45 and pregnant with her first child, she wanted a change of direction in her career; as well as the huge change she was about to embark on in her personal life. When the opportunity of becoming a retailer and distributor for Chelsea Beautique in Bahrain came her way, she jumped at the chance. We all have to start off somewhere so, fake it until you are it!”

OHLALA! RENDEZVOUS
Free People The holidays are a special time for children so in homage to the festive season, Ohlala! talks to the charity, Be-Free Program on their initiatives for the youth and how they are making lives a little better – one child at a time. Working with children can be as rewarding and as challenging at the same time. Rana Al Sairafi, executive manager of BeFree Program and the Be-Free team of volunteers are working to achieve its vision to have “a world free of child abuse and neglect, full of love, and aspirations for peace.” It all started in 2001 when a group of ladies who are also close friends met regularly to discuss different issues about the community. As a result, they were able to identify one main issue: that which involves children. “We had so many questions and concerns regarding children in the community. These were things like, ‘Why do many children have problems understanding the love of their parents so they go and search for it outside?’; ‘Why can’t children say “NO” in dangerous circumstances so they will not get abused or blackmailed?’; ‘Why can’t children share their fears with their parents so they can be protected?’; ‘Why do so many children have low self esteem?’; or ‘Why do educational systems fall short in building productive humans?’” Founded on these discussions, the Be-Free program was established and in 2002, it was formally launched with the support of the former United Nations Human Rights High Commissioner Mrs. Mary Robinson. “Before starting Be-Free Program, we realised that there was a shortage in programs that tackle issues related to child protection and prevention from abuse, and most of the available programs focus on the strength of the abuser rather than the 92

They are also geared towards parents – depending on them to teach children how to protect themselves,” explains Rana. At Be-Free, they tackle these issues differently. They first visited other countries to learn from others’ experiences; and they then developed their own methods – building on people’s differences in culture, beliefs and their inner strength. So Rana and the rest of the team conducts training workshops and seminars; they also network with organisations with similar interest, and find various ways to raise awareness about the protection of children and teens; building their personalities and encouraging them to play a positive role in their communities. They also undertake training workshops for parents, professional trainings for specialists, and do campaigns to raise community awareness. “The workshops that we developed trains the children themselves rather than teaching the parents and asking them to convey it to their children. We train kids from age five and above,
in a fun and interactive atmosphere – helping them to come to conclusions themselves instead of giving them instructions,” she shares. “Watching children and teens learn new concepts and skills that will positively impact their life is something very special. When parents come and tell us their children’s stories, and how they have applied what they learned, it just makes me so happy and thankful.” For information on Be-Free Program’s workshops and activities, call 1724 2415 or visit www.befreepro.org or Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter: @befreeprogram www.ohlala-magazine.com

Happy Birthday
Sagittarius
MsSagittarius
Soul searching is the order of the day as this month sees you analysing relationships and speculating as to whether a future exists there at all. For some, the story is optimistic – especially if you have been negotiating a commitment from your partner with a final target of marriage in mind. However, it won’t be good news for all Sagittarians and those of you who are finding your relationships hard going at the moment might well wonder whether there is a long-term future to speak of. However, this is your month and birthday celebrations will put you at the centre of everyone’s attention – which is just as you like it, so make the most of the moment!
Giovanni reveals your destiny …
Sagittarius At-a-Glance
Sagittarius is modelled after the mythical Greek centaur and archer and stands for bravery and nobility and they are seen as the Zodiac’s seekers of wisdom and truth. As fire signs, they are energetic and dynamic but kind-hearted and loving. They are not usually mean-spirited or arrogant and display an openmindedness that sets them apart and makes them inspired business partners. Honest and straightforward they are not the most diplomatic of signs and they can say things out of turn that does not always play in their favour. On the negative side they can sometimes be stubborn and shallow when it comes to relationships and despite their fiery nature they are often accused of being unemotional. They are also not always the most sensible people when it comes to financial matters and struggle more than they should do.

The message this month is contentment and reflection in life that will see a long-term project finally come to fruition. Whether it be a business plan or a sought-after position, the signs are positive for any movement in this direction. The next couple of months will also make you better able to appreciate the loved ones around you and family become a focal point in the coming weeks. The chance of a holiday may come your way in a most unexpected manner and the opportunity should be grasped with both hands. You could do with a break!
If you’ve been going through a difficult emotional time lately, December offers you the chance to finally break free from the chains and reclaim your life once more. It could well be that you need a confidence booster and this may come in the form of an admirer, who has been waiting in the wings for some time and is now ready to make a move. Even if you feel unsure about a proposal for dinner or some similar advance, put your uncertainty behind you and take the chance. It could be the start of a much bigger event.
This month you’ll feel like you’ve been blessed when a piece of financial good luck lands in the lap of a partner and opens up a wonderful set of opportunities for both of you. On the work front, new projects and new directions will reveal themselves and something in particular that you’ve been gravitating towards is going to give you the chance to exercise some of your more creative qualities. Romantically, you may feel that specific family members have served to drive a wedge between you and a loved one so you should do everything possible to fix the problem.
Aquarius
Taurus
Money weighs on your mind – and in some cases rightly so since you’ve been found wanting when it comes to astute financial decisions. A purchase made recently for a considerable sum has proved to be nothing more than an unused extravagance and the source of much argument and disharmony. It may well be that recent unhappiness has led you to spend, simply as a means of improving your spirits. However, any such endeavour will prove to be little more than a temporary respite and could end up causing more harm than good. www.ohlala-magazine.com
You have had such a frustrating few weeks at work but your perseverance has seen you emerge successful as far as a specific project is concerned and you are now in a strong bargaining position as far as where your career goes next. On the home front, challenges have also been thrown at you but your determination and quick think thinking has also allowed you to overcome them. Consequently, December is going to be more about celebrating achievements so unwind and appreciate what you have achieved.
This month will see you overtaking the competition and putting your plans into action with devastating effect in the work place. On the financial front, money could have been tight over the last couple of months but the situation is set to improve in December and you will feel a little less burdened by fiscal restraints thanks to a salary increase and a fund maturing unexpectedly. As far as the world of romance goes, if you’re feeling neglected then let you loved one know but don’t expect things to chance over night. Just recently you have felt like you need a break. Things have got on top of you from all angles: work, relationships, family. Even your health has been knocked back because of the turmoil swimming around you. The thing is, a solution isn’t that hard to come by and a few simple corrections can have you and your life back on track before you know it. Unfortunately, you’ve allowed your situation to get on top of you so you need to focus on one concerted effort and you can break free from what are relatively flimsy chains in reality. It’s more a mental issue than a physical.
Leo
Rich is the person whose greatest asset is the love and friendship of others and this month you’ll see that sentiment demonstrated in the most profound fashion. You may find yourself hampered by financial restraints and perhaps at a low point. However, friends and relatives who are aware of your plight will surprise you by rallying together and assisting you back onto the road to recovery. Reflection will later show you just how well you are loved and to what extent you should learn to appreciate it more.
The air of romance will follow your every move this month and any new relationship that finds its roots in December will show long-term promise and the potential to go somewhere constructive. On a work-related matter, don’t speak too openly with a companion who likes to dish the dirt as you might find yourself the subject of other people’s conversation and this could be used against you in a battle of wills. You need to exercise humility and caution if you are to eventually succeed. Overhearing two relatives talking at a family gathering sees curiosity getting the better of you and you’ll soon be helpless to resist the temptation of pursuing the subject matter further. Where you might come unstuck is with someone not willing to reveal what they know, leading you to be exposed for committing some unnecessary snooping. The best advice you can take is simply stay away. Ignore or conveniently forget what you hear. You can’t always be in on everything no matter how much you try.
Scorpio
A conquest or hurdle that has hindered your progress up until this moment will finally become surmountable. You’ll have good reason to celebrate a notable success in the work place and there could be the opportunity for promotion. This incident may also lead you to cement a useful friendship with a colleague, which will prove advantageous in the coming months. Keep this particular person close and listen to their judgement because it will help when the New Year is upon you. OHLALA! 113
