here are few women who don’t have a make-up bag bulging with products. From that old faithful mascara you’ve sworn by from the time you first started wearing make-up to that snap purchase that’s now sitting in dust because it’s a few shades out. – “I’ll need it one day” I tell myself – don’t we all? Beauty is something we indulge in; perhaps an uncomfortable truth for some, but cosmetics have a transformative power. A sharp rouge lipstick can make you walk in stronger strides, eye shadow can bring out your playfulness and a serum can kick some confidence back into you - the human face is a fascinating canvas. So, welcome to our beauty issue! Prepare for a product heavy set of beauty pages, but we know you love it. Our comprehensive guide has you covered from getting that soft glow to eating the right kinds of food (some myth busting here) to the team’s saving graces that see us through: clear some space in your bathroom. Elsewhere in the issue we give you an inbetween-season wardrobe refresher, a look into Marina Qureshi’s (based in London and Dubai) latest romantic collection while also heading to the Serengeti in a dreamy journey of wild terrains, safaris and hotel luxury. 12

Style Focus, plakinger

When it comes to my own beauty fixes, I’m a serial scent searcher – if it’s got a mannish, herby top note, it’s mine. Admittedly I’m in and out of malls so it’s hard to abate the addiction. With so many retailers enthusiastically perched outside department stores spraying the latest perfumes, I’ve almost reached a point where I need some on-the-go coffee beans in my bag! I’m faintly shy to admit that Chance Chanel is still my favourite. It seems too obvious. It’s like saying your favourite film is Breakfast at Tiffany’s. But sometimes the best are seen this way because they simply are. And let’s be honest here, the best way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it.

I have a real penchant for petal coloured blush and this one from Mr. Ford is at the top of my list. It’s a clever ombre effect, which sweeps onto your cheeks to give a beautiful, even glow. You can use the darker side of the palette for a bolder look or the lighter side for something more subtle.” Angela beitz local editor, abu dhabi

“Although I am a strict monochrome, normcore dresser, I always add a dash of colour via my nails. These nude shades are subtle and chic without being too loud.” Georgie Bradley, Editor-in-Chief

For gals who want wider and bigger eyes take note. Apply a gold hint on the outer part of your eye and add a silver hue to the inner corner. Finish it off with an olive tone eye pencil and smudge it on your lower lash line.

Although metallic hues can be quite intimidating, we love this one. Apply a soft brown hue all over your lid and lower lash line. Pack a bit of silver hue to the outer and inner part of the eye. Go big on your eyebrows. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Yes, we all know white bread is the bomb however, cookies, cakes, crackers and – yes, even white bread – won’t do any good.

Cut Down Dairy Products

Dairy is the number one factor for acne and unhealthy skin. You love milk? Opt for almond or soymilk instead. Still not happy? Eat yogurt, the fermentation may reduce hormones that trigger and cause unbalanced skin.

Avoid Processed Meals

A juicy hamburger is great, and perhaps a hot dog as well – but these are not the healthiest meat choices. When buying meat, opt for organic and free-range, and for better results cook at home.

Salmon, mackerel, sardines, arctic char, and albacore tuna are all high on Omega-3, which reduces inflammation in many different ways.

Lesson Learned

From basic beauty dos and don’ts to more tailored skincare advice for living in the region, Angela Beitz reveals the best beauty lessons she’s learned

A

s an editor and former beauty editor, I am incredibly lucky to be showered

with loads of the latest products to try, make up lessons from the pros, the newest spa treatments and endless hair consultations. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it. As sharing is caring, I thought it’s only fair to share with you, lovely readers, the best pieces of advice that I have learned over the years.

Wear Sunscreen

We all love the year-round sunshine that The Gulf offers but it means you need to constantly protect your skin from the fierce rays. Hyperpigmentation, uneven skin-tone and skin cancer are all common problems we face here in the region. It’s imperative to wear sunscreen daily (at least 50+). Don’t forget the back of your hands, arms and legs and your neck. It’s the cheapest, most effective anti-ageing product you’ll ever use.

Less Is More

Whilst it’s very much an acceptable thing in this region to dress to the nines, it’s also important to keep your look chic and simple. Over plucked eyebrows, caked on make-up and overdone hair looks so unnatural. Focus on one thing; a bright lip, a smoky eye or a gorgeous bronzed body. It’s so much better to let your natural beauty shine through rather than constantly over-doing it.

Use What’s Best For You

It’s so important to find products that work for you. This goes for skincare, body care and hair care. I used to be partial to trying things because they were the ‘cool’ new products on the market and in the end I ended up wasting a lot of money on things that irritated my face and weren’t suited to my skin type. Everyone is different, but I find in this region it’s best to use products that aren’t heavily perfumed and the more natural/organic products are the way to go. I feel heavily perfumed creams and moisturisers really clog your pores here due to the heat and humidity.

Don’t Be Scared Of Serums

When I was in my early to mid 20s, I was really against trying serums as I was worried they would make my skin oily and greasy and I felt they were slightly medical. So not true. Serums are such an important aspect of your skincare regime and I even like to layer two different ones under my moisturisers. They are perfect for plumping out the skin, fixing pigmentation and preventing ageing depending on your skin needs.

Stock Up On Products When You Travel

Living in this region, most of us are lucky to travel a couple of times (or more) each year. Do your research before you visit a new place and work out what products are cheaper there or what’s available that we don’t have access to. I love France for Bioderma, Australia for great fake tans, organic skincare and Paw Paw ointment, Italy for Collistar, the US for Sephora and Boots in the UK for pretty much anything beauty related! www.ohlala-magazine.com

A CUT ABOVE

Wolfgang Puck’s Cut empire has increased its global footprint with a new addition at the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. We’re not shy about tearing into steak – especially when it’s butter smooth Bahrain is awash in steakhouses. It’s a labour of love trying to find the ideal beef. The people of the isle love a perfectly scorched hunk of steak – blush pink on the inside – with a side of finely cut French Fries. The simple combination goes a long way. But Cut By Wolfgang Puck, despite its infancy on the scene, has acquired senior status among its beef brethren. Along with the opening of The Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, Cut cultivated a lot of critical conversation – noise – good noise. Cut is all about steak the way you want it to be. There’s a legitimacy (courtesy of the pre-ordering presentation of the different cuts of beef, some more marbled than others, by the waiters, brimming with expert knowledge) of what they offer. When you’re told that the restaurant gets weekly deliveries of far-flung ingredients from Japan, you know you’re in a good way. Kobe beef, anyone? We’re talking highly prized beef. When you come up the twinkling spiral staircase into the restaurant, you immediately take in the burgeoning views of Bahrain Bay within the airy volumes of the interiors. There’s no cutting corners at Cut, everything is generously sized – from the cocktail glasses to the seating arrangements – there’s a plushness that is hard to fault. The décor is minimal – the emphasis is in the plate

presentation. That’s not to say the starry light fixtures don’t create atmosphere. “I hope you’re hungry because we have a lot to get through today,” said Ben Small, Cut’s Executive Chef. He made it sound like we were set to do obstacle training with little respite for the weak. Challenge accepted. Having been with the Cut family for over eight years, from Beverly Hills to Bahrain, we knew we were in capable hands. We start off with a selection of oozing warm bread, sprinkles of crunchy salt on top and a slab of rosemary infused butter. We were already singing praises. Combining items from the lunch and dinner menu, Chef Small had us on the Big Eye Tuna Tartare, Wasabi, Ginger, Togarashi Crisps and Tosa Soy to begin with. Along with a Jumbo Lump Crab (completely fresh no less) & Shrimp “Louis” Cocktail, Spicy Tomato Horseradish and a Wild Field Mushroom Ravioli with Parmesan Reggiano, the starters were creamy good and prickling with earthy flavours. The latter was particularly air-like and enjoyably slippery. Catering for the vegetarians (none among us mind you) the following dish was a winter inspired creation: a Line Caught Gulf Bass, Sunchoke Puree, Roasted Potato, Brussels Sprouts, Mushroom Emulsion. Sounds technical enough, doesn’t it? In taste, the scorchedto-a-crisp skin that had a batter-style crunch into a baby soft chew of bass was a touch citrusy and winter-warming at the same time. On to the big boys. Of all the meats we had, the star of the steak lineup had to be the New York Rib Eye. Our waiter said: “I respect any woman who goes for a Rib Eye.” My steak, towards full on rare, was enough to make a Paleo abiding person cry with joy. It was melt-in-your-mouth tender. With it a number of complimenting sides – Tempura Onion Rings, Hand-Cut French Fries with Herbs, Creamed Spinach with Fried Organic Egg and Cavatappi Pasta “Mac & Cheese” Aged Cheddar. It was simply perfect. Somehow there’s room for dessert after all that. The Dark Chocolate Soufflé with Whipped Crème Fraiche and Gianduja Chocolate Ice Cream is not to be missed, especially if you like that hot and cold experience.

Despite my incessant requests for photo stops, most travellers – a journey truly unlike any other and one that has we soon reached the lodge seemingly without warning – it seems served to capture the hearts and imaginations of the many who have to rise out of nature itself. Indeed, the Four Seasons Safari Lodge set foot on the African savannah. There may not be a single sign of civilization around, its vast, swaying grasslands and annual great wildebeest migration. but this doesn’t stop the lodge from offering a level of amenities Aside from tourism, human habitat is forbidden and it has long one would not expect to find way out in this wilderness, complete been widely considered one of the best places to see the coveted with wifi, flat screen TVs, and impeccable service. best guides in the business and I was pleasantly surprised to find myself the sole observer of most of our wildlife discoveries. This is in stark contrast to most safari experiences – for the safari has become a popular and ever more attainable travel experience and stories of 8 vehicles lined up to observe a small pride of lions 10 meters or more from the road are far from uncommon. Standouts from our game drive included a family of cheetahs trotting around lazily after a recent meal, and happening upon 6 lions taking an afternoon nap under an acacia tree. Not one meter away from us, delicate and mighty, they regarded us with the full realization of their power and majesty, not even remotely intimidated by our presence. As incredible of an experience as it was, after a full day speeding and bumping along the savannah, the thing I most desired was a tension melting massage, and once again, I was in luck, because unlike most safari camps and lodges, the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti also boasts a world class spa. The spa is comprised of six free standing, stilted treatment villas, each with its own changing area, shower and sun deck that looks out directly into nature. I had the “The lodge truly blends signature kina massage, where a the culture and heated Masai stick is used to ease the tension out of each and every muscle for 90 minutes of pure relaxation. My therapist suggested that I opt out of the background music and instead open the glass doors of the treatment room and listen to sounds of nature throughout my treatment – a sensation I will certainly not forget. My spa treatment was followed the next morning by a gentle yoga session by the excellent on site yogi and therapist and was observed throughout by a curious duiker outside of the open windows. The second evening of my stay was spent at Boma Grill, the lodge’s signature dining experience, with a focus on blending traditional and contemporary African cooking. Many will be unfamiliar with the cuisine, but the waiters are skilful with their recommendations and myself and my companion are still reminiscing about the wonderful meal we had. The seating plan is circular and is centred around an open air fire pit around which the Masai deliver a memorable performance each evening. As if these experiences were not enough, the lodge also offers excursions ranging from hot air balloon safaris to 90 minute bush walks with a ranger. There is a fascinating on site discovery centre which showcases the unique history and culture of the Serengeti and the Masai people, and highlights the many social responsibility programs the Four Seasons takes part in the surrounding area. The Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti and the Serengeti itself both more than live up to the iconic names and reputations behind them, and as our manmade world continues to encroach on nature, as the incessantly running machines and lights spread ever outward, places such as this become fewer and farther between, making the urgency to see and experience them before they disappear or diminish ever greater. 72

Diva Drives

The Infiniti Q70 We experienced an adrenaline-fuelledtaste ofthe luxurious Infiniti Q70 atthe Dubai Autodrome just priortothe Abu Dhabi GP in November lastyear, completewith hot laps driven by F1 racing legends…

A

s a Diva Driver, I love Formula One, not just because of the loud engines, the celebrity spotting, and the awesome parties – I love it because opportunities like this invariably pop up around the event. The Q70 is one of the most recent launches in the Infiniti range, replacing the much-loved M Sedan, which was the flagship luxury sedan in the Infiniti range before the rebadging of the line-up. It is undoubtedly a handsome devil, with bold, aggressive front styling, flowing lines and muscular wheel arches all lending a sense of graceful power. Inside, a warm cosiness and comfort is created by the smooth lines and materials of the 76

www.ohlala-magazine.com

dashboard, door panels and even seat cushions. There’s rarely an angle in sight, and wood trim finishes off the organic vibe nicely. The seats are big and comfortable, and there is ample room both front and rear for up to five adults. However, Infiniti have always been as much about performance as they have about style and luxury, which is why they’ve held fast to their muscular 330hp 3.7l V6 engines (and the mighty 416hp 5.6l V6 in the ‘S’ sports models), which have delicious amounts of power and torque. In November, we were invited to experience the new Q70 at an event attended by Scottish racing legend-turned-pundit David Coulthard, and current Russian Red Bull racing driver Daniil Kvyat. However, not content to just

pitch up, the two drivers climbed behind the wheel themselves to give us hot laps around the Autodrome’s Oval circuit with lots of tyresmoky, sideways action. I was lucky enough to ride with Coulthard, and as I climbed in, he said something completely random to me (exactly what escapes my memory). I turned to him, confused. “Sorry, what was that?” I asked. He turned to me, shook his head, and pointed to the iPhone wedged between his helmet and his ear. The guy was on a conference call!!! Wide eyed, I buckled in, and gripped on to whatever my hands found, as David slammed it into drive and roared off onto the circuit,

casually throwing the car into hundred foot power slides at 80km/h while he nonchalantly discussed broadcasting schedules and general F1 banter with whoever was on the other end of the line. A lesser journo might have screamed. I just let out the occasional squeak through clenched teeth… Thoroughly enlightened as to the muscle of the car, we were next invited to a series of exercises to experience the performance for ourselves. Over a series of circuit laps and autocross courses, we experience the smooth and luxurious ride comfort, and the impressive amounts of grip afforded by the doublewishbone front and multi-link rear suspension. Alas, the experience was over all too quickly, and though I left with a highly positive impression of the Q70, I’ll leave my detailed opinions until I’ve had a much more thorough drive in it.
