Editor’s Letter
I
was on a flight from New York to Phoenix, Arizona in 2011. It was a rather ghostly red eye in the dead of a frigid February. But that was fine – I was heading to warmer climes. Having three seats to myself meant I would be well rested after the five-hour journey. I was a live wire instead. With my nose pressed up against the Plexiglas window, eyes darted downwards, America’s topography slowly morphed before me. From city lights that looked like a cluster of gold chains to an abyss of mountain ranges, seeing the world from above like that really stood tall for me, more than any other time before. It was in that year when I did an exchange program in the States that I first got the travel bug good and proper, as a young independent woman. I had given myself one year to accomplish 10 states. America is practically four countries in one, so it was a complete experience. I was totally rinsed of my piggy bank funds (accumulated since my mid-teens) by the end of it. And since then it’s been a hard-to-kick addiction of travelling the world. On that flight to Phoenix, I got chatting to the airhostesses. They were tenured, so they could have easily been the jaded type to spit out snide remarks. Instead, they painted a beautiful picture of the world and encouraged, with haste, to see it in full. In our summer issue of Ohlala we’ve gone places. Our team and contributors have indulged in luxurious stays as we’ve traipsed the world to give a great escapes edition of our travel section. Adding to that, our style and beauty pages are packed – giving you ideas to approach the spirit of the season with the utmost knowledge and fashion power. We also get some insider tips and must-haves from some of the most jet-setting women in the region. This issue caters to every kind of traveller – whether you’re more city chic or a natural wonderer, it’s all covered. So when you’re gliding through the belts of the tropopause on your flight, remember to enjoy the moment. I find you feel alive and fulfilled, as you enter another unknown world to colour your own world. Make your summer escape the start of something new and inspiring.

Sense & Sensuality Adriana Iglesias is a rising Mediterranean fashion siren. The Spanish native produces pieces that are as languid and effortless as a sun drenched afternoon in Valencia. The designer gives a personal insight into how she feels about women, fabrics and her beloved Mediterranean sea

“She is also able to feel the emotions of those around her. This is what gives women their power”
A
woman who celebrates her body transmits sensuality. I think sensuality transforms a woman as she elevates herself in her own eyes and that’s how she distinguishes herself in other people’s eyes. I am also inspired by the vision of a woman who assumes control of her body - it’s a self-discipline, that’s why ballet also inspires me. When a woman goes for a walk, she focuses on her senses. She focuses on the sights and sounds around her, and feels those emotions. She is also able to feel the emotions of those around her. This is what gives women their power. There is sensuality about fabrics. I think all materials should be inviting when they touch the skin. When I see my kids stroking my dresses I feel I have succeeded. It is the same when you wear the silk. You feel you want to be in contact with it forever, you find sensuality in it. As a designer I try to evoke sensuality with my collection, I try to enhance sensuality with our fabrics, cuts and colours that remind us of sunny beaches, seas, fragrances and wild nature. I breathe the Mediterranean from every pore of my skin and all my collections reflect my travels and personal life. Most of my prints in my designs are inspired by this focus on the Mediterranean Sea. I am in love with life and everything about the Mediterranean Sea. It inspires me and when I design I feel I am giving my women a part of that Mediterranean spirit and strength. I love the vibrant colours from nature: the intense blue of the sea in Dubrovnik, or Santorini, the turquoise from Emerald Coast (Sardinia), tropical leaves (Tulum)…I love all of it. I love pure white and the colours of blossoms too. The world itself is my favourite place. There are so many places to love. A hotel stay in Antibes (Hotel du Cap Eden Roc), Tulum or Paris would be my ideal. The light in Valencia is amazing. It is really special. And of course: here we have and feel the Mediterranean. It is a great place to live with kids as it is a medium sized city, we can bike, we have ‘time’ and we are really well connected with Madrid or Barcelona if you want what a bigger city offers. I only design what I would wear. Style is a reflection of an attitude and personality and confidence is really important, so my collections show my own sense of style. And I feel good wearing feminine clothes but also comfortable. I think my clothes bring a message of elegance, sensuality and beauty, promoting a perception of femininity. By using great silks and jacquards or cashmeres in winter we provide the collections with high quality. You can perceive the premium quality in the collection, as everything is hand-made at our atelier. I am inspired by the vision of a woman who loves herself. My daughters also inspire me every day. The way they perceive and live everything for the first time gives me the opportunity to feel life again with new eyes but with more knowledge. Romy Schneider, Grace Kelly, Lauren Hutton, Brigitte Bardot, and Charlotte Casiraghi are the most beautiful women in the world. Feminine and positive women that feel sure of themselves wear my brand - who enjoy fashion but are not restricted by trends. I feel the Adriana woman is full of energy.

Clean Slate
Luxe basics have become a fashion phenomenon of late. Ostentatious wear is the mainstay in the Middle East, but there’s a lot to be said about minimalist imports. We speak to East London based House of Sunny, established in 2011, about how they are making waves with uniform dressing
How would you describe House of Sunny’s aesthetic? It’s clean and minimal. We focus on the shape and structure of our products, taking inspiration by everyday things around us, including buildings, people we walk past in the street and places we visit. We’re embracing minimalism now more than ever. What defines luxe in basic separates? Luxe basics are staple pieces with added detail. Basic staples with a twist are House of Sunny’s forte. A classic shirt with a waist tie or a staple crop top with a D ring detail, for example, are what makes House of Sunny’s pieces so unique and so well loved. How do you think social media has helped develop the brand? We have followers who have been with us from our very first collection VOL01 and we have followers who have just discovered us. We encourage our customers to interact with us via social media, asking their opinion - we want them to become a part of our brand. Social media gives us a first hand insight into our customers which helps us develop our collections. The Middle East is a hotbed of emerging designers. How have you broken into the market here? We’re constantly monitoring the Middle Eastern market and discovering ways in which to cater for this audience. We have been working with new retail partners in the area such as Sivvi.com. We’ve met the pint-sized Lebanese designer several times in Paris and with each season, she brings it, unabashed and full of stories. hat brought your interest in dermatology? I am a medical doctor, and I have always been interested in how to stay youthful, so its natural that I gravitated towards dermatology and natural remedies that help preserve youth. What sets Shiffa Dubai apart from the other skin and body care companies in the region? We are natural, organic and ultra luxurious; think of a natural version of La Prairie skincare, and you have Shiffa. All the ingredients used have a proven positive effect on the skin. Just like when you eat healthy food your skin glows, when you use healthy skincare, it magically transforms your skin for the better. Summer is upon us, what are some tips to battle bad skin? Don’t use too much liquid foundation or tinted moisturisers. Liquid foundations tend to clog pores (and the heat and humidity aggravate this problem). The moisturiser gets absorbed into the skin bringing the pigment along with it – so again, this will aggravate your skin, causing blocked pores and spots. Switch to a sunscreen (without tint), and a mineral powder foundation if needed. Drink a lot of iced herbal teas and water; you really want to make sure your body stays in a well-hydrated, alkaline state. What’s the secret for great and radiant skin? Working on your skin from the inside AND outside. Out is easy, Shiffa products do the job (we have won eight awards to date), on the inside, cut back on sugar and refined carbohydrates, the spikes in sugar levels it causes is a major ager for skin.
Preserving Youth Dubai’s Doctor Lamees Hamdan is a medically trained doctor who’s interest in dermatology led her to create one of the most luxurious products for your skin and body in the region. Combining the latest advanced science and dermatology while using premium grade organic natural products, the woman behind it all gives us an insight into why taking care of our skin is essential

Why should we switch to organic skincare products? Organic skin care products are made without using any preservatives, chemicals, or other synthetic materials. They are made of natural ingredients like flowers, herbs, fruits, nuts, milk, and oils. Some chemicals found in conventional commercial skin care products and cosmetics find their way into the bloodstream. Although trace amounts of those chemicals may not cause significant threat, but an accumulation can
Beauty Insight be potentially toxic. By using organic skin care products, you eliminate the risk of chemicals seeping into your bloodstream. For dry and acne-prone skin, what are some advantages of using Shiffa Dubai products? Shiffa is formulated with a beautiful blend of fatty acid rich base oils such as Argan, camelia (the japanese geisha’s secret), avocado, macadamia and more. These penetrate deeply into the skin providing a long level of hydration and nourishment. For acne skins, Shiffa has a clean ingredient deck, with calming and antibacterial extracts such as tea tree, lavender, chamomile, which penetrate the skin and heal it. I recommend healing balm for both types of skin at night. What is the biggest misconception about luxurious skin care and body products? You really do get what you pay for. I see people who don’t want to spend on their skin, and in their 40s it shows. Buy only what you need, and what is suitable for your skin. Any new products on the horizon for Shiffa Dubai? Yes we are coming up with a new exfoliating masque with three different types of natural acids, which gives you radiant skin and using it over time actually strengthens your skin and collagen levels.

Q: Makeup can run in the summer due to the heat. How do you avoid this?
A: Cool off with a face mist. Keep one these life-savers in your bag!
Q: My makeup tends to slide after one hour of application. No matter how much I powder, it won’t sit still! A: That’s because you’re applying way too much powder, or foundation. Keep it light and apply a fix makeup that will lock and set your foundation without adding extra layers.
Q: Should I pack on foundation and concealer for this season?
A: Not at all. Cover any imperfection with a good concealer and forgo heavy foundation. BB creams will come in handy.

high flyer Angela Beitz explains the key to keeping your holiday beauty regime simple while still looking fabulous
A
fter many years of travelling abroad and yearly trips home after being an expat for five years, I think I’ve finally managed to perfect the art of travel beauty. The most important thing being - keep it simple! It’s so tempting to take all of your cosmetics and skincare products with you when you travel. I used to think it made perfect sense to take five serums and four different types of face masks along with six different eyeliners on trips but it’s just not necessary and wastes space in your bag. The main thing to remember is that it’s all in the preparation. Things such as getting a spray tan, tinting your eyelashes and getting a nude gel mani/pedi etc. before your trip can save you so much time. It means you can revel in the fun of making the most of your vacation as opposed to wasting valuable time getting ready rather than sightseeing or relaxing on the beach. Eyelash extensions are also a good idea along with a keratin smoothing treatment so you can wash and go and save time blow-drying or straightening. Sure, this means that you will need to set aside time before the trip but it’s ohso-worth it and will mean you can be as low maintenance as possible on your holiday. Another important golden rule is to downsize. Small travel bottles are so essential and will help you save room and weight in your luggage. Very few of the products you take should be full size. Things like dry shampoo, body moisturiser, shampoo & conditioner
or fake tan can be bought when you arrive at your destination (assuming you aren’t travelling to Antarctica but there’s probably less need for those items there anyway). I actually really enjoy going to pharmacies or department stores in other countries to see what they have available and stocking up on things you can’t buy in the GCC. When packing it’s important to only take the essentials (I know, I know but trust me on this one). I find it helpful to lay everything out that I want to take and then I take some things away and then come back and take a few more things away. You don’t need three different types of toothpaste or six lipsticks, I promise. We all like to look our absolute best but sometimes a holiday is a good opportunity to get away from your daily beauty look and routine and keep your look chic but simple. The less is more rule has never been more applicable. I’ve taken my hair straightener on so many beach holidays and then arrived to our tropical destination realising nothing is going to beat that type of humidity and end up embracing the beach curls and giving my hair a good rest. Other tips are being sure to take an organised zip lock bag of hydrating products and make-up wipes on your flight to save your skin from dehydration and upon returning from your holiday, be sure to book yourself in for a facial to restore moisture to your skin and to deep cleanse your pores from using sunscreen or other products. Happy travels! www.ohlala-magazine.com

Heaven on earth Sofia Graniello makes a wanderlust escape to Indonesia where she almost trades the opulent Middle East for paradise realised at the Conrad Bali It was time to visit Bali. Visit greatness. Some call it paradise even. Being the skeptical woman that I am, I had my doubts about ‘great Bali’. Would it be overrated? Would it be crowded with wannabe surfers? Thinking of what I was about to be faced with, and thinking about every place I would visit, and every temple I could possibly photograph like a typical tourist – I had plenty to keep my mind occupied on my nine hour plane ride from Doha. Arriving on the island, I did nothing but relax, and let the place speak for itself, ready to pull me in. Wowed by a myriad of motorcycles, cars, and people all clustered on the road – I was immediately submerged into Indonesia’s gem. Arriving at the Conrad Bali – the most soughtafter luxury resort for couples and families – the place was exceptionally grand. Modern, contemporary, spacious, with a twist of luxurious appeal – I was officially in paradise! Having stayed at one of the Conrad Suites, I had to pinch myself to reaffirm I was finally in what many call a haven! A 45 sqm deluxe room with a balcony, terrace and a view of the pools and gardens – it was private and secluded enough, with luxurious 68
www.ohlala-magazine.com
personal amenities. Not to mention its fabulous marble bathroom, tub, and coffee/tea making facilities for couples who wish to stay for a romantic getaway, or for that perfect honeymoon. In addition, it offers a private pool to their members with a restaurant in reach, in which I enjoyed my daily international and Japanese breakfast with a breathtaking view of its plush private pool. And because I’m a breakfast kind of gal, filling you in on what RIN is all about, is a must. This Japanese restaurant offers delicious and traditional flavours with a contemporary twist. So if you crave a Japanese breakfast with some miso soup, then this, is your spot. And if perhaps a Mediterranean approach is what you crave for the evening, Eight Degrees South, a casual, yet refined atmosphere is just the perfect choice for a romantic/family outing. Having had a succulent dinner on my first evening, the winners of the night were their tasty smoky Wagyu prime beef steak tartar, their black angus rib eye steak and the delightful gourmet virgin aged olive oil-octopus. And that was just the start to my Balinese paradise escape. It was time to explore the island and capture its realness, its people, and the multi faceted culture the island has to offer. And having had my first waterfall experience, Tegenungan waterfall should definitely be on your bucket list. However, hold on to your tops ladies, because I’m still looking for mine! Surreal as it can be, every landscape and every temple I visited was even more breathtaking than the previous one, which takes me to my favourite sightseeing spot: Ubud. Known for its ‘hipster’ vibe, and surrounded by edgy and grungy restaurants – the choices and the atmosphere were endless offering nothing but artistic
Travel Escapes
inspiration. Not to mention the one temple I had the pleasure to tick off my list: Saraswati Temple, known also as: Lotus Temple. If the name still doesn’t ring a bell… think: Eat, Pray, Love with Julia Roberts. And continuing my culinary journey at the Conrad Bali, my next experience was a taste of the island’s local dishes. Suku the resort’s main restaurant, offers a buffet and a la carte breakfast, lunch, and relaxed dinners. One I fully committed to and enjoyed thoroughly. If you ask me, the fried rice and Balinese noodles took the grand prize – which I proudly served on my plate many times. And yet, when I thought I had already had all of my Balinese experiences, a local massage was very much in need. Jiwa spa, the resort’s serene private haven of pure wellness, offers an array of massages, facials, and treatments - I wish I had done them all. Having picked wisely, a 60 minute Ocean Flow of pure relaxation, I can honestly say it was on par with the excellence of the Balinese fried rice – I’m obsessed with fried rice, if you’re wondering. My therapist used medium pressure with Balinese massaging techniques, which soothed and eased my stress knots paving the way to a healthier me and topping off my beautiful vacation. From breathtaking temples to cerulean bodies of water, if you’re thinking of visiting Bali, do it. It is paradise. Take it from a woman who has had a skeptical view of paradise in the past. History & Tradition Angela Beitz checks into Edinburgh’s most famous hotel, The Balmoral to discover old world charm in the heart of the city The grand Balmoral Hotel is a prominent landmark in Edinburgh located right in the heart of the city on Princes St. The impressive hotel offers some of the best accommodation in Edinburgh, including suites with 18th century decor and breathtaking views over the city. The iconic hotel opened in 1902 and has since been renovated and updated to blend old school glamour with modern amenities. Original features include ornate plasterwork in the reception, an elegant well staircase and the dome-ceilinged Palm Court tearoom and bar in the centre of the hotel. Most rooms have views towards Edinburgh Castle and the Old Town making it the perfect hotel to see the sights without having to leave the comfort of your room. The Balmoral was originally built as a railway hotel and its clock tower, which dominates the Edinburgh skyline, runs three minutes fast so that you never miss your train which we think is a lovely touch. Over the years it’s accommodated movie stars, royalty and prime ministers and houses the suite where JK Rowling finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The hotel’s burly doormen are decked out in traditional kilts

and will warmly welcome you into the hotel. The lobby has an original fire place and is filled with fresh blooms and deer wallhangings representing the Scottish countryside. The whole hotel feels quintessentially Scottish and has a lovely feel about it. The Balmoral boasts 188 rooms of which 20 are suites. The most expensive rooms overlook Princes Street, the Castle and Arthur’s Seat. Inside-facing rooms have views onto the inner courtyard. Earthy coloured tones of cream, brown, purple and green mimic Scottish landscapes and heathers. We are booked into a Junior Suite with a castle view and it’s simply breath-taking. The large windows showcase what we think is the best view in the city. The room is spacious with a lounge, huge TV and sophisticated décor. The spacious bathrooms are really something special with heated towel racks and stunning white and black marble throughout. Some of the bathrooms have large black and white iconic pictures of Sean Connery. The property also boasts a large number of excellent dining options. Number One, the hotel’s Michelin-starred eatery, is one of Edinburgh’s top restaurants and focuses on local Scottish ingredients. The restaurant is located in an intimate space in the hotel’s basement, with red-lacquered walls, velvet banquettes and well-spaced tables. In 1930s Art Deco style, Hadrian’s brasserie (also used for breakfast) serves traditional Scottish dishes and exudes an old school bistro feel. We enjoyed a tremendous breakfast at Hadrian’s including everything from a full Scottish breakfast to more light and super healthy options. The jewel in the crown of this hotel though is the Palm Court. It has a Champagne bar and serves a fabulous afternoon tea which is an absolute must-do whether you are staying at the hotel or simply just visiting Edinburgh. The space is painfully chic and feels like you’ve stepped back in time. The hotel has been awarded ‘The

Tea Guild special Award of Excellence 2013’ in recognition of its outstanding quality and consistently high standards in Afternoon Tea service and it’s easy to see why. Afternoon tea comes as a decadent portion of yummy selection of sandwiches with different fillings including egg, ham and mustard, salmon and cream cheese and cucumber with traditional fresh scones with jam and clotted cream. There are also lots of sweet treats such as berry tartlets and lemon meringue pie on the top tier of the cake stand. Wash this all down with a strong black Balmoral tea or a glass of champagne and you’ve pretty much got the perfect afternoon tea. The service is excellent and doesn’t feel stiff or snobby which was a nice surprise. Another must do while at the Balmoral is to visit the spa. This is a Rocce Forte hotel after all and their spa and spa products are second to none. The spa offers five treatment rooms, a 15 metre swimming pool, sauna, steam room, gymnasium and exercise studio. The spa offers a wide choice of treatments to impress even the fussiest spa goer including massages, facials, manicures and pedicures and detoxifying body wraps. If you’re not sure which to choose, the helpful spa attendants will guide you through the options to provide the best recommendation based on your needs. We indulged in a Spiezia Deep and Meaningful massage which uses firm and deep pressure to help boost circulation and to help alleviate muscular tension by stretching and lengthening the muscles and soothing tendons and ligaments. We felt utterly soothed and deeply relaxed after this beautiful massage. You won’t find a hotel more iconic or steeped in tradition in Edinburgh and we highly recommend a stay or a visit.

City Sophistication In one of the most intriguing and energetic city’s, Layal Mahmoud stays at Le Meridien Bangkok and experiences the height of Thai hospitality In the heart of the bubbling city of Bangkok,
an abundance of cosmopolitan art lies in peace. It is the remarkable Le Meridien Hotel! From the minute you step into the spacious lobby, you are captured by the artistic spirit; even the giant main glass door is covered by a see-through poster of a handsome man that I did not recognise but he is probably well-known and famous! The lobby complements something out of a modern school of design; the black colour is dominating in a beautiful marriage with the matte silver front desks and the perfectly brown wood of the long gray sofa. It is a fine choice, I tell myself. This urban contemporary space may sit on a complete other spectrum of design compared to the traditional set up you might find in Thailand, but it certainly goes to show how the land of smiles is moving up in the world of prized interiors. Checking in was quite fast and easy, so we took the roomy and really fast elevator to the eleventh floor. The room was substantial and as modern as the lobby. Some chic Thai writing decorates the wall behind the large bed; a formidable presence of the dark brown wood gives the room such a sophisticated look, it’s all that you expect and more!

We reached the hotel while the sun was setting, but we didn’t want to surrender to our fatigue, so we decided to explore the surroundings. The friendly staff was generous with useful information and a ski-train map. And so, it was the beginning of our daily journey in search of great shopping and unforgettable taste of the original homemade Thai food. Believe it or not! Our stay didn’t conclude without dining at the hotel’s fancy restaurants. In addition to the main restaurant: Latest Recipe, the elegant Latitude Lounge ornamenting the lobby, made for a great spot for a quick meeting over a brilliant cup of coffee. Those with a taste for wine will adore Bamboo Chic Bar serving snacks and hors-d’oeuvres with a phenomenal selection of the hotel’s signature cocktails. The breakfast at Latest Recipe on the other hand, has a whole different story on its own: exceptional! A huge variety of delicacies from fresh milk and cereals, to all kind of vegetables, a corner for eggs, another for cold cuts, and a wide collection of hot dishes from around the world, a special corner for Japanese cuisine, and finally the house special frozen yogurt, in addition to fantastic fresh fruits. And it was remarkable to find some gluten free choices as well - which is reassuring considering the wave of gluten intolerance the world is riding on at the moment! But do not worry, those extra calories are not meant to stick around as you visit the sixth floor dedicated to maintain your healthy lifestyle. The gym is fairly large with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the refreshing pool. And the walls of the reception paved with sea stones are a welcoming invitation to a perfect day of indulgence in the five stars SPA that combines the traditions of the great nation and the spirit of the modern world. And, maybe, you will end your day with a snack and a cold drink by the pool surrounded by relaxing music and comforting greenery. On the fifth floor, businessmen will never be disappointed with three perfect and well equipped conference rooms, and two meeting rooms with all the needed technology from LED screens to phones, smart boards, and projectors along with everything else. This property is 282 rooms of sophistication, modernity, fine art, and culture, and a team that works in the spirit of true hospitality: friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Urban Luxury In the prestigious Al Sweifiyah residential area, Shabana Adam has a home-awayfrom-home experience at the supremely luxurious Four Seasons Hotel Amman Expect nothing short
of a royal treatment at the Four Seasons Hotel Amman. Check-in is as smooth a process as can be and first impressions of the staff show how incredibly friendly and welcoming they all are – we feel at home! The hotel itself is stunning – with a lobby that boasts a grand staircase, a beautiful chandelier, marble finishings and lovely flower arrangements. THIS, is what true Arabian hospitality is about! Our accommodation for the next four nights was going to be an Executive King Suite – a lavish room located on the 5th to 14th floors (we were on 11!) with a huge and comfortable king bed, a separate living area with plush sofas, a walkin closet, and a massive bathroom with a heavenly tub and shower. The city views from the suite were spectacular, plus we were blown away by just how spacious these living quarters were (we could have easily set up home here). From the soft bedding, to the luxury amenities and the different areas of the suite, everything was perfect, but, for us, it was the added touches that made the stay all that more special. When in Amman, you’ve got to roam around! Start at the citadel, the site of the ancient Rabbath-Ammon, home to striking historical structures like the Roman Temple of Hercules and the Ummayad Palace. The citadel sits on Jebel al-Qala’a, the highest hill in Amman, so expect some pretty magnificent views. Head to the lively downtown for an experience of chaos and culture; there’s a shop for everything. Fresh fruit and veg markets, souvenir stores, traditional Jordanian dress boutiques, thrift shops with vintage trinkets, weird and wacky accessories, furniture, and, literally, everything in between. Most Jordanian women in downtown Amman are wearing the hijab, and though Western women are not expected to cover up at the same level, there will be a few stares if you’re in a dress. It’s the most traditional part of the city, and the most overwhelming. But, locals are incredibly friendly, you can pick up a bargain, and the street food and juice stalls are some of the best I’ve encountered. Jordan’s location is an interesting one. To the north is the strife torn Syria as well as Lebanon. To the west is Egypt and Israel, whilst Saudi Arabia lies south and to the east is Iraq. Jordanians are very much aware of what’s happening in their neighboring nations, unafraid to talk about and acknowledge the different situations. However, one thing that was surprising and heart-warming is just how friendly and peaceful the Jordanian people and their country is. Five days travelling there, meeting the locals and experiencing true Arabian hospitality with real traditions, I can confidently say that I felt completely safe during this magical journey in Jordan. Back at the hotel, we experienced the breathtaking spa at the Four Seasons Hotel Amman. Inspired by the restorative and relaxing benefits of the Dead Sea, this spa boasts a huge indoor pool, a sprawling changing area (men and women separate), great treatment rooms with mood lighting and music, and a nice relaxation area for

after-treatment. We’d highly recommend either the Spa Signature treatment which starts with the delicate removal of dead skin cells followed by a warm Dead Sea mud wrap to help cleanse and detoxify the skin, finishing with the Oriental relaxing massage; or the Nabatean treatment – a luxurious local treatment which starts with a full body scrub using a unique mixture of olive seeds and Dead Sea salt crystals, followed by a full body olive oil massage. You’ll feel transported to a whole different world at this spa – and, like us, you won’t want to leave. Four Seasons Hotel Amman is truly a special place. Quintessentially English On a discreet street in Mayfair you’ll find the inconspicuous Brown’s Hotel London sitting among fellow townhouses. Georgie Bradley stays for a weekend of pure class and refinement When I used to live in London, interiors like Brown’s Hotel’s
Kipling Suite was something I only experienced via the box and/or lingering outside people’s houses in posh parts of the capital - if the drapes weren’t drawn in, that is. Ah the days of sauntering around and salivating over those ‘what could be mine one day’ catalogue-perfect living rooms. I’d mentally pick out my room and imagine snug Sundays curled up in my fabulous abode. But for one long weekend earlier this year, I got to play pretend and lived out a long-held dream. London’s hotel scene is so perky, there’s always somewhere opening or a new place to be - to a point of exhaustion however. What is so brilliant about Brown’s Hotel,
76
www.ohlala-magazine.com
a Rocco Forte Hotel, is how reserved it is on the circuit – it’s got noise but not the kind that brings in riff-raff – no thank you. On a less than hustle and bustle Albemarle Street smack in the centre of Mayfair, you’ll find the more than charming hotel. When you first enter, you feel like you’ve come into a tucked away private members’ club – there’s a very intimate and exclusive air about it. The reception and concierge desks add to this personal feel by being equally quaint. The hotel first opened its doors in 1837, so there’s deep history here. And knowing this lends credence to its current status of being a boutique style hotel, attracting the discerning luxury traveller of fine taste. You won’t find a lairy mob checking in, but a remaining breed of understated individuals with yesteryear gentility. On the ground floor too are the restaurants and bars where you’ll find that sophistication and style is always on the menu. There’s the HIX Mayfair restaurant, Donovan Bar and the award-winning English Tea Room, all of which see an after work crowd in the main - the sharply suited and booted and A-line dress wearing with glossy bobs type. Fantastic for a slice of definitive afternoon tea or a late night tipple by the antique fireplace. Having recently finished refurbishment, the Kipling Suite, named
Travel Escapes
after the much loved Rudyard Kipling of the Jungle Book, who was said to have written a sizeable block of the novel here, has had the most endearing lick of paint, led by Olga Polizzi, the group’s director of design. The Kipling suite opens up to a dense forest-green wallpaper that strikes you as jungle-like by designers Lewis & Wood, in keeping with the history of the original suite. The living room is something out of The World of Interiors. The space is so well filled, you instantly feel a sense of place and belonging. The silk curtain fabric by Manuel Canovas and furniture by Julian Chichester are gorgeous; the rustic bookcase in the corner can stimulate intellectual thought and talk while the timber flooring is prestigious. You’ll also find a framed hand-written letter from Kipling, penned and sent during his stay at Brown’s Hotel. The floor to ceiling French windows let in an astonishing amount of natural light as if England were a permanently sun drenched country. I had my Madeline Shaw breakfast with a side of the Times Newspaper each morning next to said windows. You can imagine. The bedroom is decidedly cosy with whiffs of history; every nook and cranny of the suite is filled with multiple editions of Kiplings’ novels. The mid-century pieces are what really make the room special as they sit side-by-side with contemporary fixtures. The bedroom leads onto a 9sqm walk-in wardrobe fit for your wardrobe times three with his and hers separate areas with a beautiful central ottoman.
The bathroom is gloriously marbled with thick fluffy towels and is a capacious 16sqm – accommodating a bathtub, a double walk in shower and two (two!) armchairs with a side table and an above Alabastar chandelier sourced from an antique dealer in Sussex. There’s also a modern sculptural shell wall light from Porta Romana and gold ornate vanity wall lights, making this my favourite part of the suite, and arguably the most important part of a hotel stay. The Spiezia Organics amenities are ludicrously luxurious and offer a candle to reset your mood, deluxe body balm and a body and bath oil to unwind in your very impactful bath. A stay at the Kipling Suite comes with an array of extras to complete your experience. Among them are: bags unpacked on arrival and then packed again for departure, evening wear pressed on the night you arrive, a very welcomed bottle of Ruinart Champagne, a personal shopping experience at Paul Smith on Albemarle Street and two-half hour treatments at the spa. The spa exemplifies the spirit of wellness luxe as I had an aromatherapy massage to the sound of pure bliss, which means nothing, no echoes of the outside grind or fuss, perfection. There’s so much joy to be had in the Kipling Suite. You experience a world totally removed from the norm. It’s London’s best-kept secret.

With every word he says, his eyes widen, his hands have a life of their own and his animated chat on food is addictive – his energy is palpable and you could sit and listen to him for hours. “Everything is nostalgia for me,” he says as he demonstrates how to consume the wildly fun Candy Passion drink where you push the plume of cotton candy above the rim of the champagne into the glass – “it’s like a lava lamp.” His motto around the art of cooking is to have fun and go off-piste with tradition because then it becomes that a much more enjoyable experience. It’s all about the people and happenings of the past that create his interpretations. Having had a hybrid of cultures around him growing up, where he was raised in Toronto with Asian roots; he is able to bring a real flavour of styles to the table. His culinary background also lends itself to where he is today: “I was taken under the wings of phenomenonally talented Japanese/Korean/ Cantonese chefs” who were the bedrock for his career which later took him around the Caribbean for over a decade before coming to Bahrain 14 years ago. But interestingly (yet somehow unsurprising given chef ’s dynamic and unpredictable nature) cooking was not something that was on the cards – coming from a family of scholars, he calls himself “the black sheep of the family, but cooking just happened for me”. And it is with this experimental, ‘let it happen’ attitude with which he cooks. When asking him what are the three main ingredients he most likes working with, he doesn’t have a definitive answer except: “anything fresh and vibrant. I’m not the type to say I want something from the land or the sea. When it comes to my recipes, I have no idea how

they work, something just clicks with them.” Chef Michael is extremely precise when talking about his dishes. As we dive into the Crispy Duck Salad, he highlights all the elements in both a haphazard and careful way to show how layered his dishes are. With Sakura mix truffle oil, roasted fig and shallot vinaigrette, black Hawaiian salt, yuzu grape seed oil, toasted pine nuts, dried berries and assorted citrus, this dish screams with flavour. “There’s no special way of eating it,” he assures us. He doesn’t want us to be shy or worry about being ‘proper’ eating his creations. When we “mmmm” he applauds our “howling and grunting noises, I love it, that’s what I aim for.” As far as eating experiences go, you have so much fun at Meisei with chef Michael - no rules, no frills. We had a glorious selection of dishes including a Hamachi Salsa: marinated yellow tail, wasabi tobiko and jalapeno vinaigrette followed by a Grilled Serrano Baby Chicken: Apple wood salt, Peruvian mash (such a great novelty), Thai basilpuree, fresh spicy Serrano micro cress and Aji Amarillo chilli along with a Vegetaraian Dol Sot (wonderful presentation) which included black wild rice, grilled shitake, spring onions, zucchini, carrots and spicy gochijang sauce. The one dish that got us endlessly “ooing and aahing” was the Kalbi Gim: braised beef short ribs, scalloped potatoes, roasted vegetables and pine nuts. As chef Michael states, “this is a special dish, my mother’s recipe.” We’ve never actually tasted anything softer and insanely mouthwatering ever! But if you really want to be wowed at the end of all that, the Grand Meisei Indulgence is a feat of sweet delicacies, in both presentation and taste. One word: Innovation. SPa days at VIE One of the best and most unassuming treasures at The Domain Bahrain Hotel is its VIE spa. We lapped up in their luxurious offerings and found ourselves totally renewed and rejuvenated On a morning
where my legs felt unusually, but recently quite frequently, leaden, I was absolutely ready to surrender myself (very willingly) to The Domain Bahrain Hotel’s VIE spa. Arriving on the women only 11th floor of the hotel’s spa, I was greeted by Emma, the spa manager, who gave me a cooling fruit and vegetable infused glass of water before guiding me around the grounds. Known as the VIE Lifestyle Lab, it is an urban wellness spa that focuses on both relaxation and rejuvenation. There’s a real emphasis on creating a space for women to unwind and remove themselves from the outside chaos with an atmosphere of tranquility and naturalness. I certainly felt shut out from the world and ready to descend into another world - one more attentive and nurturing to my body’s needs where you can take the time to be good to yourself and restore much needed balance. Going through the multi-purpose VIE spa, you can use their fitness centre which is home to state of the art, cutting edge gym equipment including: elliptical trainers, cable cross over machines and treadmills. You can use the women-only gym or head up to the 15th floor for the mixed gym, if you prefer. And if you want to burn 600 calories in 30 minutes, we suggest you try the Iyashi Dome Far-Infared Sauna. You lie in the dome (turn at 15 minutes) where it heats the body directly and raises the core body temperature to produce a deep detoxifying sweat - hello healthy. A must try! One of my favourite features on this floor is the VIEtality cafe - where you can get healthy snacks, cold pressed juices and energy boosters to complement your feelgood treatments. Gluten free breads are also available, a major plus in our opinion! You can also enjoy the expansive pool on

the 36th floor which boast superb views of Manama. I was booked in for an Oriental Ceremony, which taps into South East Asian techniques and rituals. The VIE approach fuses science and nature to handle the complexities of the body and you definitely feel like you’re taken care of with the utmost grace and elegance. The 75 minute treatment is an aromatic and exhilarating journey which starts off with a deep yet soothing exfoliation using a spiced marmalade scrub all over the body. Exfoliations can be intimidating if done with a hard hand but my therapist was gentle and thorough while scraping off all the dead skin cells with the very fragrant scrub, incorporating long massage strokes into the first part of the treatment. What makes this treatment a ceremony is just how reverent and peaceful the therapist was and how your body is treated like a temple - with respect and honour. After washing off the scrub in a tepid shower, I experienced the most energising and special massage I’ve ever had. Using smooth stones wrapped in aromatic bags soaked in warm oil, giving off a piquant geranium and ginger scent, the therapist pressed them at various points on my body where they gave me an instant energy boost. As she did this across my body, I felt increasingly soft and hydrated, while also slipping in and out of a light nap. There’s nothing quite as relaxing as being worked on to the sounds of chimes and peaceful echoes of nature. I cannot recommend this treatment enough if you’re looking to give yourself a luminous makeover in the most natural way.

Bahraini artist Sumaya Abdul Ghani produces real talking points. Her work is rooted in religion, where she brings out the richness of Islam in the most telling way
Tell us a bit about your background. Are you an artist by training or did this develop spontaneously?
your Lord is the most generous who has taught the writing by the pen, who has taught man that which he knew not. Surat Al Alaq 1-5.
Since I was a child I loved art and gradually I started taking workshops and art classes. I only thought of it as a career in 2009.
How do you take loaded concepts like Islam and create a piece of art out of it? Where do you even begin? Ideas normally are taken from contemplating and studying the Quran and its interpretation. It all started when I began attending the Quran club (Bathrat Eman). We research, study and discuss many topics of the Quran. From these mindful gatherings, many ideas pop in my head.
Does your heritage inform your art and how you create your collections? I am inspired by the Quran and I consider it to be a part of my heritage. Your work stems from very visceral places - there are rich stories behind your collections. Tell us about some of them? I’m going to talk about my latest project ( Iqra) which means read in Arabic. My statement explains it perfectly: Read...The first word revealed in the Holy Quran. Read... An invitation to awaken the minds... An invitation of enlightenment...Then comes the pen... Another invitation to research and document Read...Write...Research and document are the threads of science. Are those threads woven in the right form? To advance? To develop the earth? In a manner that is assenting to God? Or is it that some have strayed the path? Have abused science? Have lost their way...Read! In the name of your Lord who has created all that exists. He has created man from a clot. Read! And 90

“I have been focusing on spreading the true Islam through art, but I definitely feel socially responsible towards other causes”
Do you feel a sense of responsibility to address wider issues through the medium of art? So far I have been focusing on spreading the true Islam through art, but I definitely feel socially responsible towards other causes. What has been your most profound collection to you on a personal level? All the artwork that I have produced are like my children, so I can’t choose one over another, all of them are precious. Have you got any upcoming exhibitions in Bahrain or the GCC we can look forward to? I have a future plan that I will announce later on in the year.

The Infiniti QX60 Whilethe Infiniti QX30 and QX50 are forthe stylish lady abouttown, the QX60 is forthe stylish soccer mom abouttown – atriptothe playing fields has never come in such elegance…
T
he QX60 (formerly the Infiniti JX) is an SUV aimed squarely at big families, with big comfort, carrying power and practicality all hallmarks of this premium people carrier. With three rows it can seat seven adults in absolute comfort, even in the third row, which in most other vehicles often lacks both head and leg space. The QX60 has been restyled significantly from the JX, now coming with standard-fit bixenon headlamps, new LED Daytime Running Lights as well as front fog lamps which feature LED lighting and chrome finishers. In addition to style, this all translates to excellent visibility when driving at night. The QX60 comes with Nissan’s highly prolific 3.5l V6 engine, known for its reliability, economy and decent pulling power. In the QX60, it puts out 265hp and 336Nm of 92

torque, which makes for great acceleration and effortless highway cruising. The ride quality isn’t quite what you’d expect from a premium family carrier, feeling a bit too firm at times. It seems that they’ve transferred the sporty handling characteristics from their QX50 and QX70 crossovers over to the QX60, when perhaps a softer and more pliant ride might have been more suited to this particular SUV. However, what this does mean is that the QX60 is incredibly stable on the road. Cruising at highway speeds, the QX60 feels firmly planted, and isn’t affected at all by crosswinds or air turbulence from large vehicles like trucks and coaches. It also boasts impressive levels of grip and agility for a seven-seater SUV. Perhaps, most importantly, it feels solid and safe, which is something that parents will value
above all else. This safety is further enhanced by features like Forward Emergency Braking (FEB) with Pedestrian Detection, Predictive Forward Collision Warning, Backup Collision Intervention and Around View Monitor, making it one of the safest seven-seat crossovers in its segment from a technology perspective. The interior of the QX60 is an impressive exercise in comfort and practicality combined. The second row boasts AC vents with climate controls, and there are AC vents in the third row too. On the top-spec model we were testing, there were dual 7-inch colour screens mounted in the back of the front headrests for multimedia video playback with two wireless headphones and wireless remote control, which is ideal for keeping the kids quite on longer journeys.
Other features included intelligent cruise control, heated and cooled front seats, blind-spot warning, second and thirdrow panoramic sunroof, and the Infiniti Intelligent Key with Illuminated Push Button Ignition, which allows you to enter the car and start it without even taking the key fob out of your handbag. The second row of seats is adjustable, sliding back and forth to allow for more legroom in the third row, and also sliding right forward at the simple pull of a lever to allow very easy access to the third row. Both the second and third row seats also fold flat to give the car massive cargo space for those big IKEA boxes. It’s a hugely practical setup that makes the QX60 useful for a wide number of purposes, from ferrying five-a-side soccer teams to carrying furniture. The biggest appeal about the QX60, though, is the price, which sits at around BD19,000. This is extremely competitive for a premium-badge seven seater. Are there other options out there? Sure. You have the Infiniti QX80 for one, as well as the BMW X5, the Mercedes GL, and the Audi Q7, all of which will cost you at least BD10,000 more. This is where the QX60 carves a very attractive niche out all on its own, and leaves itself without competition – a very smart move by Infiniti! www.ohlala-magazine.com

ne of the more pressing questions Dr Yannis Alexandrides received from the crowd at Mezzaluna last month, where we were gathered for Dessange Paris’ launch of the product line, was: “How does a plastic surgeon end up bringing out a skincare line?” By no means were we questioning how apt his credentials are, but it seems slightly off piste - but at the same time, complementary to his primary focus. “I call it a side effect of my practice. It’s not just about completing the treatment, it’s about what you do for your patients afterwards. Aftercare is very important. Finding anything that will accelerate healing is very important. I tried to find a product or method to do that. I first developed a healing serum for post surgery treatment. I don’t try to be sensational and say you’ll see a difference in your skin after two days. But I do hear a lot of patients say they feel a difference quite quickly. And it was with these comments that made me think I should absorb easier into the skin whereas serums is more liquid. Creams are create products that help with not just the for everyday maintenance and serums target something more specific. healing of the skin but also the wellbeing of the But for 111 Skin, the serum is the cornerstone - “you can use it day and skin,” explains Dr Yannis. night, coupled with the day and night cream for the maximum benefit.” 111 Skin, based in London’s Harley Street, But the emphasis on skincare is practically non-existent when has a host of products that recover and preserve you’re in your twenties but this is when you’ve got to start establishing the skin. Recently serum has become a buzzword a routine, claims Dr Yannis. “If we were to really take care of our skin in the world of skincare and should be embraced. early on, we wouldn’t age as fast! If we have something that enforces Creams are said to contain more ingredients that this mechanism of preservation, then we are winning,” says Dr Yannis. When it comes to a routine, you’ve got to start with a cleanser - “the skin needs to wake up too with a good wash and scrub - and the same applies for nighttime, you have to remove all that pollution”. And now that summer is in full force, us sun worshippers are digging a deep hole of skin problems. Skin products are not going to fix your burnt-to-a-crisp skin, it’s about lifestyle choices. “It gets boring but really, avoid the sun. It’s the most important thing. Tanning is actually a protection against the sun, the skin builds melanin to filter. Drink a lot of water and eat a lot of vitamin containing vegetables that are important for the skin. Salmon is also a key food. 111 Skin’s Aqua Booster is an instant replenisher of dry skin, that can be added into a moisturiser for those sun-filled days. If you’re looking for a game-changing product, you’ll definitely find something that works for you with 111 Skin. You might not see a change the next day but give it a few weeks and then you’ll be talking!

Miss Ohlala
L8RZ TXT acronyms,
hello emojis ! Miss Ohlala is in a nostalgic mood and takes us back to text speak acronyms that are lost to the sands of time We all know how fast-paced technology is and noone can be blind to the soaring popularity of social media. I grew up in the pager and Nokia-texting years. Having been a huge Facebook fan in the noughties, in this decade I’m a self-confessed Instagram addict. I’m not a Snapchat fan, so I’m holding out for the next trending social media platform to emerge. In a rare nostalgic moment the other day, I recalled some text speak acronyms which once littered my Nokia messaging history, and are now verging on extinct: • L8RZ or CUL8R (See you later) • 2nite (Tonight) • TTYL (Talk to you later) • GTG (Got to go) • BRB (Be right back) • GR8 (Great) • M8 (Mate) The limitation of characters on old handsets led to the rise of acronyms in text messaging. The advent of smartphones means we are no longer restricted to a limited numbers of characters, and we have an evolved autocorrect function. Text speak acronyms no longer save time and they are outdated. BRB and GTG were useful in the days when you logged onto your pc every evening, however there remains little use for such expressions nowadays when we are all online 24/7. TTYL is now obsolete; who needs to call when you have Whatsapp? I’m NGL, I’m relieved that LOL and OMG are still going strong. I’ll know that I’m officially ‘old’ when they become extinct. Thanks to the rise of smartphones and the soaring popularity of social media and instant messaging apps, we appear to be adopting a more pictographic form of communication. Emoticons are becoming increasingly popular. Even a year ago, I wouldn’t have contemplated sending a ‘Winking Eye emoji’ to someone I didn’t know well, but now it appears to be socially acceptable to do so (in the right circumstances). 114 www.ohlala-magazine.com
Whilst a picture may in some cases be worth a thousand words, can a set of pictograms really convey a full range of messages and emotions? Perhaps, although I personally find there to be a distinct lack of stylish emoticons for clothes, shoes, clutch bags and hats. Perhaps the emoji creators could team up with fashion designers such as Roland Mouret, Charlotte Olympia and Stephen Jones to design some trending fashion emojis. Finding the right emoji can often take longer than typing the message you are aiming to convey. So I question whether we use them for convenience or ‘shorthand’, or whether they just appeal to the child within us? I think it is the latter. On that note, who could possibly say they weren’t excited to discover the new unicorn face emoji? We all need unicorns in our life. The question on my mind now is whether my most commonly used emoticons, being the “Face With Tears of Joy”, the “Heart Eyes emoji” and the “See-No-Evil monkey emoticon” will be outdated within a decade? And if so, what will replace them?
