EDITOR’S LETTER This issue welcomes The Chic Escape with a whole accolade of content to have you raring to go this season, from protective skincare to fashion staples and staycations. Covid-19 has altered our travel plans, but it hasn’t stopped our wanderlust thirst. It is with this very narrative that I announce my departure as I move forward into new adventures, experiences and creative endeavours. Who even knew that adulting could (and would!) be this hard? Interviewing the likes of Charlotte Tilbury, Stella McCartney, Sandra Choi, René Caovilla, Furne Amato and Laudomia Pucci, to name but a few, is certainly no mean feat and a testament to Ohlala! World exclusives such as the launch of the RollsRoyce Cullinan and creative directions for photoshoots with Ferrari and Maserati will forever be ingrained as memorable moments. Luxury dining experiences and staycations have certainly moulded my taste for the finer things in life. I’ve swaddled Ohlala in all of her fashionista qualities and watched her grow. So, in the last moments that I have on this platform, all I want to say is, “Thank you, this is not a goodbye, rather an au revoir!’”

A lovely lady from the cryo team places a warm towel over my body and as soon as that happens the treatment starts. Following a quick cleanse, cryogenically cooled air strokes my cheeks. First, it is a nice cold breeze, but after only a minute the chill gets more intense— not in a painful way, but you feel it getting cooler. I brave the cold for 10 minutes and soon enough, it is over. 50

Feeling refreshed, we moved on to the next facial¬— the energising light therapy. The combination of the cold glow facial and the warm red light is supposed to bring great results, as the mix of cold and warm stimulate the skin even more. Under the heat lamp, wearing eye protection shades, I feel as though I am in the solarium. I feel great, relaxed. After 15 minutes of baking I touch my face and sure enough, everything feels tighter. Looking in the mirror I cannot believe how fast the results show up! My face appears brighter and fresher, my cheeks look beautifully plump and youthful. I am told by the wonderful cryotherapy team that these results will look even greater in the coming 10 days and that is something I love to hear. The following days, the results just seem to get better, and even my loved ones would continuously compliment my complexion. It is safe to say, I find myself longing to feel the chill again - and sooner rather than later.

They then layer on a base coat and you have to place your hands under a CND (UV) lamp. Next comes two (or sometimes three) layers of colour, after each you “cure” your nails in the lamp and then comes the final layer of top coat, which is cured once again. Nails are dry at this point, which becomes more apparent when the technician wipes the tops of them with alcohol to remove the sticky layer on stop. Some may argue that receiving this type of manicure isn’t good for your overall nail health, but I would argue that the cost, convenience and time that it saves me is 100% worth it. Being a true “girl on the go” I need to keep my nails properly maintained. This type of manicure keeps me from having to squeeze in a weekly nail appointment and, more importantly, gives me more time to show them off at every opportunity! Next up, on my beauty voyage was my hair. As fun as the beach is, it is also hot, sandy, and sometimes even windy. If I could choose one word for the best beach hairstyle it would be containment. and you see it square on from the outside, you are mesmerised by the architectural achievement that is Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa. Few hotel exteriors are as arresting as this. This hotel is as awesome architecturally on the outside as it is beautiful in design on the inside. Staying at Sofitel Bahrain is all about having an experience. It is not a purely utilitarian layover hotel but a place to be, to refresh, to let the mind wander and unleash the soul. It is bright and spacious with a preponderance of marble and light fixtures. The curved sides, open windows and tessellated ceiling all reflect light and vastness to play with the sense of space around you. With its modernist Art Deco influence and consummate dedication to service, the hotel echoes the traditions and style of Middle Eastern culture whilst embracing an international flair. This was a strange and new experience because it was the first time I had checked-in somewhere since the Covid-19 virus unleashed itself on the world. Signs reminded customers to keep their social distance and staff wore masks. It is important to add that biosecurity is well practiced at the hotel. For example, all of our bags were misted down with barbicide prior to entering the premise and during check-in there was a protective screen between the attendant and I. From the outset, it is clear that the staff at Sofitel Bahrain realise that at the foundation of strong, lasting relationships is one of a personal touch alongside a high level of customer service. There is no wonder that this is the ideal luxury hotel in Bahrain for sophisticated travellers alike. The room had some unique touches. It absolutely did not feel like a typical, standard hotel room that is easily forgettable and looks like dozens of others you may have stayed in. On the contrary, the Prestige Suite situated

on the Club Floor is a work of art. The sumptuous suite is dominated by decadent embellishments and plush carpets. Spectacular window panels allow for the sun to produce a warm shimmering glow over its features. The linen is crisp and palatable to one that desires luxury. Every inch of these elegantly designed fixtures, built to world-class specifications and stylishly decorated, come complete with living and dining areas, spacious bathrooms, and individual work and relaxation areas. The walls reflect Bahraini iconography, yet the contemporary fixtures and ornate objects are reminiscent of France. The furniture itself is modern yet traditional - a paradox of comfort. A low hanging chandelier with an incredibly intricate pattern hung from the ceiling above the dining table in the living room further alluded to the grandeur of the accommodation. The en-suite bathroom ran adjacent to the bedroom and occupied the same length. The toilet was modestly hidden in its own partition leaving the twin wash basins, shower and bath all open in a vast continuous space. The egg shaped bathtub was absolutely huge and I welcomed the mood lighting during my soak. The bed cradled the very curves of your body to allow for an all encompassing embrace, with the finest quality bed sheets and cushioning for the ultimate voyage to dream land. You cannot talk about this suite without mentioning the homage to Bahraini homes of yesteryear amongst the patterns amidst the paneling and the entwined etched beams throughout the ceilings aesthetic. The windows filled the far side of the room letting in inspirational views and a panorama of the coastal skyline, pool and luscious foliage that adorns the grounds at the Sofitel. There are 262 sea facing rooms and suites with exclusive access to the beach and pool, all with private balconies. They say good things come to those who wait, and these rooms and suites of luxury living space only concretes this particular coin of phrase. Sofitel Bahrain boasts among the best restaurants in the city though I could not enjoy them during my stay because of the nationwide closure during the Coronavirus pandemic. That didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop me enjoying their culinary offerings. The in-room dining has something for everyone. You access the dining menu by scanning the QR grid in your room, which is a notable precautionary measure. we devoured our main courses. We both decided on the succulent salmon and we weren’t disappointed as every bite proved to elevate the whole notion of melt-in-your-mouth. Now, it wouldn’t be a staycation without indulging our sweet tooth, now would it? The chocolate and lotus cakes certainly were indulged and led us into a pre-prandial state perfect for a late afternoon slumber by the beach. After wandering through the luscious grounds to the beach, we were pleasantly surprised to see that sun loungers were spaced to allow for optimal social distancing. At the entrance an attendant guided us to secure our towels from an allocated hut and then escorted us to a vacant spot to allow for a slick operation to provide additional safety measures. Of course, being fair skinned we opted for shade under the haven of the provided umbrellas. The sand sifted through our toes and the seawater refreshed our inner child-like state as we splashed together in the calmness of the ocean current. Once we showered and dried off, we nonchalantly made our way to the pier 58

The warm bread was pillowy soft and served as the perfect vessel for scooping up the delicious morsels. It worked just as well as a dinner item, almost like mezze or tapas. The Lobster Mac and Cheese looked stunning even when presented in a brown cardboard container. The creamy pasta glistened below a vibrant orange lobster tail. The attention-to-detail is apparent throughout and the flecks of herbaceous garnish complement the other elements perfectly. It tasted decadent and like a very grown up, elegant version of a familiar comfort food. The quantities were perfect for such a rich dish. Sticking to seafood we also devoured the Salmon Steak with beautifully tender sautĂŠed vegetables and grilled polenta. The sauce was cleverly kept separate so as not to swamp the dish. Biryani, unless prepared and served properly can be a real disappointment and has been on many occasions for me. However, this version was an absolute showstopper. The layers of spice blended with aromatic rose water were so definable and the presentation was superb, adorned with cashews and dried fruit. Such an iconic Indian dish which showcased the talent of the team across the full spectrum of cuisines. The party platters are both savoury and sweet and range from Ouzi Platters with a choice of rice through to AntiPasto platters. Given my leaning towards the items towards the end of the menu I was delighted when we unearthed the pastry party platter. The delicate, delectable morsels were a feast for the eyes. Vibrant colourful macaroons, tiny meringue topped tarts as well as creamy cheesecake portions. Each was little more than a bite which made them perfect for gatherings where guests may be mingling and may not want or need a plate. Equally you could create tasty assiettes from the sensational selection. It couldn’t have been a more appropriate end to this experience from the InterContinental’s kitchens. We have however, not had the opportunity to experience the iconic British brand, MINI Cooper, in a test drive setting. That is, until now. Thanks to the professional and friendly team at Euro Motors, we finally received our chance through the new MINI Cooper Countryman S ALL4. Despite the modern look of the new Countryman, this car is all MINI in all the right places. The typical three-part structure of the vehicle is highlighted by the model-specific roofline, whilst the car’s increased ground clearance and overall upright stature indicate a spacious interior. The distinctive front design is complemented by the newly developed radiator grille, with its hexagonal contours, red “S” and single chrome strut, surrounded by a slim, one-piece chrome frame. The structure of the

new bumper covering, now entirely in body finish, adds to the vehicle’s premium appearance, with the distinctive, slightly asymmetrically rounded LED headlamps and LED fog lights fitted as standard. At the flanks, 19-inch Edged Spoke, light alloy wheels with run flat tyres contribute towards the high-end look of the Countryman, whilst at the back end, the rear LED lights with chrome frame, light up in the shape of the Union Jack. The Piano Black interior surfaces for the cockpit and door bezels, along with Dark British Oak accentuation strips are fitted as standard in the Countryman, however, new options and a further developed MINI product range, allow you to increasingly customise your vehicle to match your style. Also available are various leather variants for the upholstery as well as an expanded colour line for the lower section of the instrument panel and door trim. A multitude of equipment feature options are available for this MINI Cooper, including a new digital instrument panel with a 5-inch display that sits behind the steering wheel. The Connected Media and Connected Navigation Plus options are available as an alternative to the basic configuration, both including an 8.8-inch colour touchscreen, located in the central console. The Connected Media option includes a wide range of MINI Connected digital services, ensuring the new MINI Countryman is always online, allowing seamless integration of the voice assistant Amazon Alexa. This feature provides access to the Real Time Traffic Information service, the internet platform, MINI Online, as well as preparation for Apple CarPlay. We found these additional features to be functional and easy to navigate. The splendour of the exterior and interior aside, MINI Coopers are best known for the fun they provide on the roads. The MINI Countryman S ALL4 boasts a 2.0 litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine with optimised MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology and emission control that ensures CO2 emissions meet the rigorous 6d Euro emission standard. This model has an engine capacity of 1998 ccs and produces 189 hp. It offers a top speed of 260 km/h and can shoot from 0 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 100 km/h in seven seconds. The 8-speed Sport automatic transmission allows for the seamless shifting of gears and provides the perfect amount of power to the wheels at all times. The ALL 4, all-wheel drive system increases traction, agility and driving stability, allowing one to feel in complete control throughout the driving experience. We thoroughly enjoyed this vehicle and always felt glued to the road even around tricky bends and tight corners. MINI Cooper have included a host of safety features in the Countryman to ensure the safety of you and your family. These include Parking Assist, Park Distance Control, a rain sensor, cruise control with braking function, Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control, as well as a multitude of airbags throughout the vehicle, to name but a few. In fact, the Countryman has been awarded the top 5-star rating for its superior level of safety, in the Euro NCAP crash tests. WANDERLUST, WANDER (NOT SO) OFTEN! MISS OHLALA MUSES ABOUT THE NEXT STAMP IN HER PASSPORT AND THE IMPORTANCE OF ESCAPISM AT HOME. The only view you have had recently is the one outside your window. It’s easy to feel cramped, your longing for travel stifled by your equally strong urge to protect public health. There has been a way to travel while you’re stuck indoors though. All you need is the right book to lead your imagination on wild adventures to places far beyond the confines of your couch. We are itching with wanderlust and longing for an adventure, but have nowhere to go...yet! Throughout these strange, unprecedented weeks and months of lockdown and isolation we’ve noticed that social media has proved itself to be both a blessing and a curse. In the words of Jamiroquai ‘Virtual Reality’ has become the new ‘normal’. We’ve had to work hard to maintain relationships, employment and hold onto the hope that eventually these virtual experiences would once again become reality. Although encountering VR traveling experiences, through a series of 360° videos hasn’t quashed our thirst for wanderlust, it has helped to break away from mundane day-to-day life. The news feed and timehop memories which popped up with images of sparkling, azure blue waters lapping at our feet or palm trees adorned with hammocks have merely mocked us. Chic, city breaks we had taken with friends as we binged on as many landmarks and experiences as we could have only dominated our nostalgic longing. Beautiful moments and memories captured before the world changed have seemed all but a distant memory, but there is light at the end of that tunnel! Frequent updates about airports opening up again for tourism have me dusting off my passport. Standing now almost at the end of this extreme journey we can start to dream again, to plan and grasp opportunities with both hands... thoroughly washed or liberally lathered in sanitizer of course! During the most difficult hours or days we will all have had a destination in mind that epitomises the new ‘normal’. A place which we have been 82

craving for months like an indulgent, fondant covered cupcake. Could it be that caution is going to be thrown to the wind and once dreamed about , ‘Bucket list’ destinations will be top of your agenda? There’s certainly no holding back with our passports, that’s for sure! Or, are you like me and you crave minutiae such as the feeling of crisp, white hotel sheets on your skin, sharing jugs of fruity elixirs alfresco with sand still clinging to your feet and the sound of the sea crashing and lapping around you? I long for the Mediterranean hum created by crickets which may go unheard by so many and in so many other destinations. Those first steps off the aeroplane will signify that reality reigns supreme, and instead of going everywhere virtually we will virtually be able to go everywhere! For those of us who have been blessed with the ability to move on from these challenging times it’s about making the most of our means and opportunities. Whether that be high end jet-setting or low key reunions with our nearest and dearest in our favourite bars and restaurants. Make experiences, make legendary moments!
