EDITOR’S LETTER Welcome to The Female Empowerment Issue where we are celebrating the movers and shakers of our region and their achievements. They have taken risks, and some have found themselves in places they never expected to be. These are women who are unapologetically stepping into the spotlight, creating businesses from the ground up and, perhaps most importantly, setting examples for other women and girls. The idea of girl power is to instil a sense of confidence, intellect, pride, and joy in young girls that will continue throughout womanhood. My mother did an amazing job of that in me. Her mother did the same for her and her sister. The women in my family are passionately independent, go-getters and I’m proud of that. This perspective of empowerment fuels my reasoning for pushing the narrative forward surrounding females. Whatever the definition, I hope to continue telling stories about women, individuals, and brands empowering the next generation of female entrepreneurs, trendsetters, and more! We hope to connect women in conversation and action as we love celebrating confident, intellectual, and joyous moments, and why not? Let’s all showcase our level of pride by sharing and embracing these empowering moments when we can. After all, the sky is full of stars and there’s room for them all to shine.

PATTERN PLAY

Another fashion month has come and gone, leaving us attempting to collect our thoughts and realign our wardrobe to a whole host of new trends and references. This season saw the revival and the renaissance of styles both new and old, as we saw 1990’s silhouettes and 1790’s detailing side-by-side with fresh ideas.

ell us a little bit about yourself. I joined PrettyLittleThing (PLT) in January 2015 as Marketing Manager from fast fashion rival Missguided and was promoted to Head of Marketing two years later. 2015 was the year in which the business grew by over 600% year-on-year in terms of gross turnover and 300% in terms of site visitation. Working in a fast-paced environment which is constantly evolving has meant I have had to adapt very quickly to the demands of the business. The Marketing team has grown from 3 to 65 employees and I have been responsible for the growth of all Marketing channels including PPC, CRM, SEO, PR, Social, Affiliates and Paid Social. I oversee top line marketing plans in all markets across 4 core areas – Planning, Brand Marketing, Digital Marketing and CRM. I have worked across the brands International expansion with launches including Ireland, Australia, France, USA and now MENA as well as opening showrooms in LA, Miami, Paris, as well as dedicated sites for The Middle East and South America. As the Marketing Director of PRETTYLITTLETHING, tell us about the biggest challenges of situating yourself as a purely online platform. For PLT we continuously focus on staying ahead of the competition and ensuring we are reacting to what the customer wants. Being a purely online platform has many advantages, particularly that we are able to move quickly in everything that we do – our teams are dynamic and used to moving at a fast pace which allows us to turn around launches, product ranges and new social initiatives extremely quickly. Women love the experience of shopping. What’s the attraction of online fashion sites when a digital experience takes the emotive aspect of retail away? As a brand we focus on bringing lots of emotive experiences to our customers through channels beyond the website. PrettyLittleThing is a lifestyle brand and it’s important for us to make them feel a part of that. Our social channels offer the customer style advice, behind-the-scenes footage on our shoots and live chats with our expanding influencer and celebrity base. We’ve developed a strong brand identity in our existing markets with our unicorn branding and we have taken that branding beyond digital platforms, wrapping taxis, trains and trams in pink PLT unicorns. Whilst the customer can’t touch or try on the product before they buy it we offer fast and easy delivery and returns which make it easy for the customer to shop from the comfort of their own home. This year we also plan to open up PLT branded cafés which will invite the customer to be a part of the physical experience. PRETTYLITTLETHING.com is renowned as the onestop-shop for trend led women’s clothing at seriously killer prices, but what is the secret (other than the price!) of PRETTYLITTLETHING’s success? PLT has been molded by our customer: we try things, we change things, we listen to the customer and we’ve become a

A FEMININE ICON This year, Piaget is presenting a host of dazzling new Limelight Gala timepieces in celebration of these iconic creations that date back to more than half a century.

EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN

The world is full of extraordinary women who are inspiring, creative, daring and powerful, all while embracing femininity in their own unique way. Women appreciate craftsmanship, talent and creativity. They invest in what can be passed down and what can create an emotion.

STEALING THE LIMELIGHT

The new Limelight Gala was inspired by an iconic model created in 1973 when the brand’s famous Piaget Society was in full swing. Celebrities, artists, clients, and friends of the Maison would get together for the most fabulous parties, gathering stars such as Salvador Dali, Jackie Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor, Andy Warhol, Cary Grant and Sami Davis Jr. As vibrant today as it was in the 1970s, the Piaget Society continues to unite a creative, curious, and intelligent set of people who share a certain art de vivre.

A FEMININE ICON

Piaget’s Limelight Gala was inspired by the elegant spirit of the 1960s, with its sensual curves, cambered case and asymmetrical lugs that extend from each side of the case onto the bracelet. The modern interpretation of the Limelight Gala reproduces the same design with a perfectly integrated case and lugs that are combined with a swirl of exquisite gemstones, ornate dials, and sumptuous gold bracelets. Almost 60 years on and the Piaget Limelight Gala is more than a wristwatch, it is a feminine icon that has become a symbol of elegance and harmony.

fficial partner to the Cannes International Film Festival since 1998, Chopard annually unveils an Haute Joaillerie collection named Red Carpet. A great lover of Nature, Caroline Scheufele has chosen this subject as the main theme for the 2020 Red Carpet Collection. The first creations provide a foretaste of the 73 models that will compose this precious “jewellery casket” inspired by natural enchantment.

THE RED CARPET COLLECTION: AN ANNUALLY REITERATED FEAT

Since the 60th anniversary of the Cannes International Film Festival, Chopard’s Haute Joaillerie workshops have annually achieved the feat of composing a collection that includes as many creations as the year of the Festival’s existence. An ambitious challenge proposed by Caroline Scheufele – Co-President and Artistic Director of the Maison – to her Artisans, who represent the combined know-how of more than 30 different crafts. Today, the Chopard ateliers, located in Geneva, are the largest Haute Joaillerie workshops in Switzerland: sculptorjewellers, lapidaries, gem-setters and polishers. From simple lines to generous volumes, from working on gold to precious stones, these talented craftsmen push back the limits of the possible and, by combining their talents, give life to the jewels in this prestigious collection. Living up to its Red Carpet name, it is destined to sparkle on the Palais des Festivals steps as it adorns the most beautiful actresses during the official presentation of their films.

CELEBRATING AN ENTRANCING NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

This year, Caroline Scheufele will unveil a range of 73 treasures. The creative soul of Chopard and initiator of its Journey to Sustainable Luxury, she has decided to celebrate the environment, along with its flora and fauna, by choosing ‘Nature’ as the main theme of this 13th collection. Chopard is thus exclusively revealing the first creations stemming from the brilliant talent deployed in its workshops: an “Owl” jewellery watch featuring two dials surrounded by multicoloured sapphires forming the eyes of the nocturnal creature; a pair of “Orchids” earrings featuring incredibly natural-looking sapphire petals and tsavorite buds; “Gingko” earrings and ring composed of pear-shaped emeralds, tsavorites and yellow sapphires in shades evoking the foliage of this majestic tree; as well as a series of “Polar bear” and “Seal” diamond rings.

Back in 2010, for Chopard’s 150th anniversary, Caroline Scheufele designed 150 Haute Joaillerie creations composing the Animal World collection. ‘Nature’ continues this artistic approach by drawing on the expertise and ingenuity cultivated by the Artisans of the Maison to craft a series of necklaces, rings, earrings and bracelets made of precious stones. Their original designs depicting animals and plants look even more realistic than the models in Nature on which they are based.

CHOPARD LOVES CINEMA

Driven by Caroline Scheufele’s passion for cinema, the Maison Chopard has been an official partner to the Cannes International Film Festival since 1998. Its workshops give rise to all the trophies awarded at the Festival’s closing ceremony – including the most coveted of them all, the Palme d’or, composed of 118 grams of Fairmined certified ethical gold and a solid block of rock crystal. Since 2001, the Maison has also showcased youthful talents in the world known as the “seventh art” through the Trophée Chopard: an award ceremony included in the official Festival calendar and which annually rewards an up-and-coming actress and actor. BEAUTY Insight

#1 RICH METALLICS

BACKSTAGE BEAUTY From vampiric to vintage, this season’s shows gave us wide-ranging beauty trends to suit everyone, so it’s time to grab your brushes and try your hand at something a little different. Easily recreated and made wearable, these are the top beauty trends from the AW20 shows. While the main focus might be on the clothes, fashion month is about head-to-toe artistry as designers work with the best of the best in hair and makeup to bring their collection to life. Just as essential as staging and sounds, the beauty of the show says a lot about the vibe of a collection, and the inspirations we should be buying into for the new season.

#1 RICH METALLICS This season saw metallic eyes get an exaggerated makeover. Leaving behind a simple gold eye, AW20 beauty stepped into colour, opting for rich tones of red and green in a metallic, oil-slick finish. The Simone Rocha team graced the model’s eyes with fragmented gold leaf in red and black shades, creating a grungier take on the usually polished metallic finish. Meanwhile, Anna Sui saw disco-meet-Gothic as models wore metallic jewel tones blended out into a cat-eye with a dark cut-crease. Adapt the trend for day-to-day by blending one tone over your entire lid, and then adding some deeper shades and added glitter for the night.

#2 POPS OF COLOUR While some designers prefer to keep their beauty looks simple and neutral, AW20 beauty trends saw an explosion of colour, bringing some sun to the darker months. For the beauty brave, look towards Richard Quinn and Rixo. Richard Quinn saw models gracing the runway with bold colourful liner along their lower lash line before merging into a classic cat-eye; adding a new splash of colour into a timeless look. Alternatively, Rixo created a rose-tinted doll-like look by blending pink blush tones across the entire lid and down onto the model’s cheeks. 46

#2 POPS OF COLOUR

#3 LATE-60’S INSPIRATION

#4 EUPHORIC EMBELLISHMENTS

Reminiscent of Lucy Boynton’s red carpet looks, this look is already wearable if you’re feeling more out-there, otherwise, keep the pink on your lids and add a little golden highlighter on top of a peachy shimmer. But for an instantly wearable look, Olivia Rubin’s feminine take on the beauty trend looks set to become a staple for us. Blue on the lids and pink on the lips; Olivia Rubin made our school disco looks chic, merging hyperfemininity with studio 54 cool.

#3 LATE-60’S INSPIRATION If colour and glitter isn’t your thing, this more neutral, vintage-inspired AW20 beauty trend is the one for you. Always a favourite reference point, this season saw an influx of the late-60’s inspired beauty looks and collections, taking note from the end of the summer of love and start of a darker time for the hippie culture. Quintessential French brand Celine gave the classic Parisian cat-eye an update with a shadowed cut crease, reminiscent of Sharon Tate and Edie Sedgwick. Similarly, Chloe models were fresh-faced with defined eyes, opting for a more subtle, smudged cat-eye over a graphic look. Paired with flowing hair in a centre parting, this lived-in beauty trend looks like it’s just stepped out of day 2 of Woodstock.

#4 EUPHORIC EMBELLISHMENTS The impact of HBO’s Euphoria hit the FW20 runways hard as we saw added gems, stamps and embellishments. Taking notes from Doniella Davy’s makeup artistry on the show, the models in several shows had their faces and eyes adorned with gems much like Alexa Demie on the fan favourite show. Valentino created an eye look that was reminiscent of their iconic shoes, adding black gems to a graphic twiggy-inspired look for a contemporary impact. Similarly, Christopher John Rogers added silver gems into brushed up brows, giving us fresh inspiration for festivals or nights out. Even Rixo added some sparkling extra to the inner corner of their model’s eyes, helping to elevate any look into something powerful and party-ready. This beauty trend has been an Instagram sensation for a while now, but the AW20 runways provided us with new ways to wear the trend in a more refined manner, focusing on clever placement rather than simply adding lots of gems or glitter

#5 NONCHALANT BOLD LIPS Is it possible for a red lip to feel modern and groundbreaking? The AW20 runways say yes as many brands chose to give their models fresh takes on the timeless beauty trend. How did they update it? By making a red lip appear casual, feeling nonchalant against a fresh face and barely-there eye makeup. A favourite technique of the french, AW20 beauty trends saw the red lip being relegated from formality into a key step in your 15-minute rushing out of the house routine. We also saw a change-up in tone as classic, rich reds were swapped out for orange-toned shades for MSGM, or deep reds that almost border on purple for Rodarte and Fendi. For orange-tones, keep eyes simple with a slightly-grey toned shadow, and use a lip brush for defined application of the colour. Meanwhile, for purple-tones, artists opted for a more livedin application, patting the colour into the lip for less harsh outlines, and pairing it with a subtle but warmer eye shadow. Whichever side you pick, set the colour with a little bit of pressed powder to avoid any shine, keeping it nice and matte while helping it last. #5 NONCHALANT BOLD LIPS www.ohlala-magazine.com

1. RETHINK THE WAY YOU TOWEL DRY YOUR HAIR Your hair is actually most vulnerable during the drying process, so the way you treat it after a shower will make a huge difference to the amount of split ends you have to deal with. And even though it’s tempting when you’re in a rush before work, don’t rub your hair dry with a towel as it will only promote more breakage, and the last thing you want is for those splits to travel upwards. Instead, apply pressure by gently squeezing the excess water out of the hair using a towel. Microfibre towels are great. They may look unassuming, but we found that it reduced frizzy bits by half and absorbed water twice as fast as our usual towel, which meant we didn’t have to spend long under the hairdryer. Genius.

2. REASSESS YOUR BLOW-DRYING TECHNIQUE

NO MORE SPLITTING HAIRS Unfortunately a whole host of things can cause our hair to split, so we have sourced a selection of top tips to protect you from damaging those strands of yours. 48

www.ohlala-magazine.com

We’re all guilty of blasting sopping wet hair with a hairdryer, but if you’re serious about preventing split ends, it really pays to allow your hair to air dry as much as possible before letting loose with the dryer. Anywhere from 60% - 90% dry is ideal, as the longer you leave your hair exposed to heat, the more damage is likely to occur. Even better? Miss the ends out completely. Invest in a quality heat protectant and avoid placing heat directly on to the ends of the hair. Focus more on the roots and mid lengths - leave the ends to dry from the secondary heat and always keep the nozzle moving constantly for an even distribution of heat. Also try your best to dry on a cold air setting. Never touch the nozzle to the hair directly. Even rough drying hair means applying heat (yep, it’s really not that much better) so if you really want to protect it, just use your hairdryer to create shape and to smooth the cuticles. Position it just above the hair and brush.

3. TURN DOWN YOUR STRAIGHTENERS You’d be forgiven for whacking your straighteners or tongs up to the highest setting, especially if your hair is super-thick, or you’re in a hurry. But what if we were to tell you that your hair won’t straighten any faster or better? Yep, really. It’s a huge myth that the hotter the tool, the better and longer lasting your blow-dry or curl. Hair reaches optimum moldability at 180 degrees, so anything higher is overheating and damaging the hair.’ The worst part, though? A high temperature is zapping your hair of the one thing that contributes to shine, strength, softness and manageability - keratin. Healthy hair contains keratin, which dissipates once heated over 200 degrees, so, any hair tool over 180 degrees will dekeratinize the hair.

BEAUTY Column

4. BIN YOUR BRUSH It might not feel like it, but hair is much more flexible and prone to damage when wet. Your trusty paddle brush? It could be doing more harm than good. It’s always good to start with a wide tooth comb. You don’t need to add pressure or brush vigorously, especially if you start at the bottom of your hair and work your way up, otherwise, you’re just dragging the knots.’ Makes sense, right? And you should really be taking your time at this stage to prevent causing any damage. There’s no harm in splitting your hair into sections to brush it.

5. BEEF UP YOUR HAIR-CARE ROUTINE You can’t repair split ends permanently, but there are some amazing products out there that have the ability to make them much less obvious. Smooth, sleek hair? Yes please. Damaged split ends crave moisture.

6. SWITCH UP YOUR SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER While there are no magic shampoos or conditioners that will get rid of split ends, choosing something filled to bursting with moisturising ingredients can help disguise them. They also work to strengthen and protect strands against other factors that contribute to them, such as colouring.

7. THINK ABOUT GETTING A SILK PILLOWCASE Amazing hair is totally an excuse to be extra, but it pays to be savvy. A silk pillowcase won’t cure split ends but it’s more of a luxury preventative measure, as is tying your hair in a loose ponytail while you sleep.

8. GET A TRIM - IT’S WORTH IT IN THE LONG-RUN If you’re growing your hair, the last thing you probably want to do is book in for a trim, but the longer you leave it in between salon appointments, the more likely you are to cause further breakage and really, a haircut is the only thing that will completely eradicate split ends. The hair follicle will just continue to break and snap along the hair shaft otherwise. It’s a common misconception that in cutting, the hair won’t grow. For optimum hair growth, you should visit the salon every 6-8 weeks for a trim, depending on the colour and condition. And if you’re still wary Hairstylists can cut cleverly by working in minimal layering. This technique makes the hair appear long but it cuts out the bulk of the split ends. But how do you know how much needs to come off ? If you split apart the hair, the point where it stops splitting is a good indication of where the weak hair ends and the strong hair begins. Good hair days all round. www.ohlala-magazine.com

GRIT & GRACE

We talk to CLARE BROMILOW, Public Relations and Communications at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay about the fire in her soul and how she garners inspiration from females everywhere.

A

s Director of Public Relations and Communications at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay you are able to empower so many females throughout the hotel industry. Tell us why this is so important to you and your role. I am a firm believer that, with the right amount of discipline and focus, people will inevitably endeavor to reach the potential they truly believe they have, and achieve what they set out to, regardless of one’s gender, ethnicity, social background or religion. All great achievements start with believing in yourself. At Four Seasons, we celebrate character and individual charisma, empowering people to become the best version of themselves by providing them with a platform that allows them to be their true and authentic selves. I want nothing more than to see my fellow female colleagues and women across all industries reach their utmost potential by striving to manifest their own personal goals. Often, when others have already paved the path ahead for us, it becomes easier to see the possibilities that are within our reach, and if I am in a position where I can be an encouragement and mentor to others then I will do whatever I can to help support the women around me. We are all for lifting other women up and fixing each other’s crowns, how do you embrace this mantra? It takes a certain balance of grace, strength, intelligence, fearlessness, and confidence to navigate our way through a largely male dominated world as a woman. There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish, as long as we work with each other rather than against each other. To live a happy, fulfilled and meaningful life is to have a purpose. Each and every one of us has the power to make a difference, big or small. When one is lucky enough to be in a position of privilege, be that socially, economically, professionally, or otherwise, I believe it is our duty to lift others up and encourage them to see what they are truly capable of. Tell us what female empowerment means to you. Empowering women is to teach and show them how to stand up for themselves by leading by example. Society has achieved great progress, and come a long way from where it was before in terms of women’s rights, however there is still progress to be made, and this will only be achieved through the collective efforts and the examples we set day by day. Recently, I was flicking through a magazine with a headline along the lines of “Top 100 Leaders in Bahrain” and felt proud to see so many women holding management positions 52

www.ohlala-magazine.com

across many sectors. To me, that is the embodiment of female empowerment – a country that not only supports and encourages females to achieve their very highest potential, but celebrates and acknowledges them in equal measure to their male counterparts. Every woman deserves to be spotlighted for greatness, name someone who has impacted your approach to life, and strengthened your position as a strong female in Bahrain. What did they do to help you through your personal journey? Women are leaders everywhere you look—from the CEO who runs a Fortune 500 company to the housewife who raises her children and heads her household – and each and every one of them serves as a personal inspiration to me in a different way. I have taken a great interest in Samantha Powers, a Pulitzer Prizewinning author and the previous U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. One of her many achievements was her role as a key figure during Barack Obama’s administration and during her younger years serving as a war correspondent. I find her accomplishments and success exceedingly inspirational. Importantly, she was brave and resolute in addressing issues relating to women’s rights, refugees, and human rights during her time as U.S. Ambassador. She continues to dedicate her life to the people in need, so that those without a voice can be heard. No easy feat for a mother of two. Knowledge is power. What challenge have you overcome as a female and how did this mould your approach to everyday life? Exposure to deeply embedded gender stereotypes from a very young age, profoundly shapes our self-perception and attitude towards what we think our role in relationships and our participation in the world of work should be. I believe it is our duty to continuously challenge these perceptions and assumptions for a more gender-equal society, as history has already shown us that women can achieve astounding things when given the opportunity. Inevitably, due to my own exposure to these stereotypes, I’ve been dancing on an invisible, complex line throughout both my personal and professional life on how I believe a woman should behave. When we behave in ways which are not ‘stereotypically female’, or express ourselves in ways that we are not commonly portrayed to do, there is a tendency to be mislabeled and judged. I challenge women to go against the tide; be disruptive, stand tall and stand proud. But most importantly, always be kind, especially to one another. @islandtangg

Cluster Director of Marketing CRISTALYN PASTRANA steps outside the norm and talks about the benefit of uplifting others to live their lives to its fullest potential.

A

s the Cluster Director of Marketing for Sheraton Bahrain Hotel, Le Méridien and The Westin City Centre Bahrain you are able to empower so many females throughout the hotel industry. Tell us why this is so important to you and your role. Women’s career journeys are always tough and they need a lot of hard work, I’m not saying that men don’t work hard nor struggle, but the burden for women especially those who have a family and have children is strenuous. Empowering women at work helps us feel strong and encourages us to do everything to succeed. It fuels us every day to do better and persevere, so It’s really important that we show sympathy and we empower women in the workforce. We are all for lifting other women up and fixing each other’s crowns, how do you embrace this mantra? I love sharing ideas and knowledge, I have a few treasured friends that I can gladly sit with all day and we talk tirelessly about what we can do together and learn from each other’s experiences. I think we all need to find our perfect group of women so that we can fix other’s crowns. Tell us what female empowerment means to you. Female empowerment means giving females the power to speak, to decide, to lead and reach her full potential. Every woman deserves to be spotlighted for greatness, name someone who has impacted

your approach to life, and strengthened your position as a strong female in Bahrain. What did they do to help you through your personal journey? The credit will always goes to my mother, I wouldn’t have the knowledge, the brave heart and especially the patience if I was not taught by my mother at an early age. Being the eldest I was trained to take responsibility of taking care of my siblings especially when my parents were at work. At a young age, I learned to take responsibility of people around me and to take responsibility of my actions.

“I think we all need to find our perfect group of women so that we can fix other’s crowns.” Knowledge is power. What challenge have you overcome as a female and how did this mould your approach to everyday life? It’s the fear of what people thought of me that was probably the biggest challenge that I had to overcome as I grew older. In this world that we live in there will always be people who will criticise you but instead of taking it personally we have to learn from it. We should always think of our goals and not worry about what others think especially if we’re not doing any harm to others. Love yourself for who you are. @cris_hotelier www.ohlala-magazine.com

A SHINING EXAMPLE General Manager at Al Areen Palace & Spa Bahrain by Accor MARIE-BERENGERE CHAPOTON discusses the importance of female empowerment and the importance of self-motivation.

A

s the General Manager of Al Areen Palace & Spa by Accor you are able to empower so many females throughout the hotel industry. Tell us why this is so important to you and your role. Empowerment can be interpreted in various ways: autonomy, responsibility, accountability, decision making and influence. As a leader, my objective is to provide each of my team members all the tools and means to achieve their objectives effectively, regardless of their gender. We are all for lifting other women up and fixing each other’s crowns, how do you embrace this mantra? Some may thrive by working independently, or by acting as a team to define and roll out strategies, others may desire taking on more responsibility, and ask for it, yet some may perform more effectively when faced with key decision making or the opportunity to influence peers. All the aforementioned leads to the main goal of reaching positive achievements, while developing a strong team spirit. Empowered teams will work together to achieve more in a self-sufficient and self-motivating environment, especially in a context as the one we are operating in today where the rules are being re-written and reference points and practices are being questioned. Tell us what female empowerment means to you. What has shaped my personal and professional life is the desire to reach out to others and overcome obstacles. I am thrilled to have been appointed to my new role in Bahrain: a new challenge, the discovery of a rich culture, and the desire to integrate myself in this new society. Wherever I am in the world, I make it a personal commitment to learn the local language; and I have always found Arabic to be a fascinating language! Female empowerment to me is being self sufficient and motivating others. Every woman deserves to be spotlighted for greatness, name someone who has impacted your approach to life, and strengthened your position as a strong female in

Bahrain. What did they do to help you through your personal journey? Along history and across the world, emblematic empowered women have brought immeasurable changes in their respective fields, such as Queen Rania AlAbdullah, Marie Curie, Rosa Parks, Olympe de Gouge, Mother Teresa, Princess Fannu, Frida Kalho and Amelia Earhart, only to name a few. Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka Bint Ibrahim Al-Khalifa, head of the Supreme Council for Women in Bahrain, has encouraged the expansion of women’s rights in Bahrain and continues to contribute to the activism of female empowerment. I must also mention some other very important ladies from our Kingdom who were listed on the Forbes Annual Power Businesswomen in the Middle East list; Ms Najla Al Shirawi, Mona Yousef Almoayyed, Najla Al Shirawi and Narjes Jama. These women continue to influence others including the youth of Bahrain, which is imperative to changing the equality narrative. Just like these aforementioned illustrious women here, we all encounter inspiring leaders in our life that will nourish our way of thinking and develop our knowledge further. Be curious, be inspired, learn from others with an inclusive mindset and you will grow both individually and collectively. Knowledge is power. What challenge have you overcome as a female and how did this mould your approach to everyday life? You have mentioned the fact that knowledge gives power. I think that while knowledge is acquired and matured through trials, successes and failures, it is fueled by the willingness to discover what is unknown or different to us. It comes back to what I earlier said, always reaching out to others to learn. Power in itself is not an objective and even if you have a position of authority and influence, it must always be handled with discernment. @mbchapoton

“She always taught me to support people and not bully them, see them as equal, and especially with being a Muslim woman, she taught me to always speak and stand up for myself.” Having a HR background helps me in this leadership role, to see potential and encourage opportunities. I know how important it is to be comfortable within the environment and people you work with, so having an honest policy with my employees is important; they are comfortable to tell me when they are facing any challenges and we can work towards the solutions. Tell us what female empowerment means to you. I want every girl to know that her voice can change the world, and it’s never a competition. I read this quote once, ‘a flower does nothing to compete with the flower next to it, it just blooms’ and I stand by this completely. We are all trying to succeed and everyone is different with alternate visions of how they want things to happen. Imagine if we were all allowed an opportunity to pursue those visions and succeed, how happy and magical the world would be. To me female empowerment is knowing that you are indeed capable of having a different idea, having hope, and having the chance to showcase that idea and pursue it. It is the freedom of thinking and being. Every woman deserves to be spotlighted for greatness, name someone who has impacted your approach to life, and strengthened your position as a strong female in Bahrain. mother has always believed in me ever since I was a kid, the support and guidance was always there, she would guide me through everything I have been through in my life. She always taught me to support people and not bully them, see them as equal, and especially with being a Muslim woman, she taught me to always speak and stand up for myself. Knowledge is power. What challenge have you overcome as a female and how did this mould your approach to everyday life? I graduated in 2011 from university with my bachelor’s degree, in 2012 I started thinking about taking the next step and doing my masters but never got around it. By 2016 I was accepted by the university I applied for and for my salon’s CR! I felt stuck in the middle of choosing between a career and an achievement, I was really stressed and discussed the matter with my dad; he told me to choose between one of them to stop stressing. I chose to do both, and I was already working somewhere else, somehow I managed to balance between all of those with believing in myself. Had I not chosen to pursue opening the salon along with my studies, then I don’t know how things would’ve turned out. @monakaiksow www.ohlala-magazine.com

INCLUSION AND

UNITY

Ohlala delves into the world of CHEF SUSY MASSETTI and her advocacy of female empowerment and organic farming.

OHLALA Spotlight

A

s a chef, and entrepreneur you are able to empower so many females throughout a variety of industries. Tell us why this is so important to you and your role. I think that all of us have persevered through ups-and-downs and are now in a position of being heard, this is a duty! We must do it, we have to push the conversation. We can’t just ‘talk’ about equality, we have to act upon it and who better than another woman who has lived and breathed the same adversity? If it starts as a conversation that changes somebody’s mind it can also change policy. If I can help to change one person’s life professionally that’s what this is all about. It all starts with one! We are all for lifting other women up and fixing each other’s crowns, how do you embrace this mantra? I exclusively focus on their work, dedication, focus, and ethos. I do not look at them as “women” but as a professional to either applaud, support, encourage or help, and I help as much as they need me to... I do it without judging and without questioning them. Tell us what female empowerment means to you. Equality! Sharing the responsibilities with our male counterparts and being an integral unquestioned part of the decision-making progress. Every woman deserves to be spotlighted for greatness, name someone who has impacted your approach to life, and strengthened your position as a strong female in Bahrain. What did they do to help you through your personal journey? Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka Bint Ibrahim AlKhalifa, of the Supreme Council for Women’s active role in

developing and preserving the environment and agricultural sector in the Kingdom has impacted my professional life. While I’ve always been very passionate about the quality of my ingredients and a hobbyist organic farmer, I became aware of the importance of being able to grow your own food as a way to ensure independence from imported items, being able to develop a system of sustainability as well as maintaining the long-held Bahraini tradition of farming. Her Royal Highness’ support to women is very inspirational!

“We can’t just ‘talk’ about equality, we have to act upon it and who better than another woman who has lived and breathed the same adversity?” Knowledge is power. What challenge have you overcome as a female and how did this mould your approach to everyday life? Knowledge is indeed power and the biggest mistake we can possibly make is to believe to know it all! The day we stop learning is the day that we die. I never and I mean never have seen myself professionally as a “female”, hence I believe no one else (quote on quote) did! I’m aware that I have worked hard and I’ve never let my guard down, I never let anyone be it male or female walk over me. I’ve stood strong with my ethos and my work philosophy. @chefsusymassetti

ARTISTIC LICENCE Bahraini Artist YASMIN SALAHUDDIN owner of clothing brand YAZI unravels the importance of art and fashion in selfexpression.

A

s a Bahraini artist, you are able to empower so many females throughout the realms of luxury with your scarves. Tell us why this is so important to you and your role. Throughout history females have been empowered through art and fashion; it is a way to express yourself without words. Through my art I translate my feelings and visions onto a digital canvas which is then created into fabrics. The scarf then becomes an accessory empowering its wearer with colour, boldness, offering expression, comfort and adding a visual statement to their ensemble. It is also important to me as a designer to play a part in inspiring women through my art and fashion pieces, attracting stylishly bold and fashion forward women. We are all for lifting other women up and fixing each other’s crowns, how do you embrace this mantra? As a woman I stand with female empowerment, we should all support one another to create a beautiful world and I believe in the karmic phrase ‘what goes around comes around’. Positivity should be radiated anywhere and everywhere. Tell us what female empowerment means to you. Female empowerment to me revolves around three core values, or rather beliefs of mine; confidence, independence and feminism.

Name someone who has impacted your approach to life and strengthened your position as a strong female in Bahrain. What did they do to help you through your personal journey? My father supported me throughout my journey and has had a huge impact in moulding me into the strong independent woman that I am today. Since the day I set my heart to go to Art and Design school in London, he stood by me and was there for me whenever I needed him. He is my role model who I have learned so much from, in work and in life. The woman that I am today I owe completely to my father. What challenge have you overcome as a female and how did this mould your approach to everyday life? As a female designer I have had to overcome the challenges of building a brand especially since it is a very competitive sector, however I had a dream and I saw it through to the end. I went through good days and bad to see it was able to come to fruition. Now, my scarves are stocked in Saks Fifth Avenue Bahrain! This taught me that no matter what you face if you believe that you can achieve something, you can! You can achieve anything you want by focusing your mindset and loving what you do. @yazi_bahrain

VINELEAF RISOTTO

FASKAR FILLET

Ingredients: • 150g Arborio rice • 20g onion (finely chopped) • 70g Vine leaves • 10g lime juice • 1g salt • 20g butter • 10g parmesan cheese • Vegetable stock/water as needed (kept hot)

Ingredients: • 90g Faskar Fillet • Salt • Pepper • 10g butter • 3g fresh thyme • Turmeric (if preferred) • Cooking oil

Instructions: • Melt 10g butter in pan, add the onion and sauté until translucent on a low/med fire • Add rice and stir in until coated with the butter • Using a ladle, add in one ladle at a time of the stock, adding each time until nearly fully absorbed • While waiting, blanch the vine leaves in hot water for approximately 1 minute or until softened, and then finely chop • Keep stirring the risotto constantly to avoid sticking to the bottom of the pan.. After approximately 20 minutes the risotto should be creamy and still al dente • Finish the risotto with the remaining butter, cheese, vine leaves, salt, and lime juice to taste, serve hot

Instructions: • Ask your butcher to fillet the fish for you (without scales) or do it yourself at home • Heat non-stick pan to almost smoking point, then add approximately 2 tbsp of oil per fillet • Make sure your fillets are extremely dry, then season • Place the fillet skin side down with a weight on top to flatten it • Cook approximately 1 minute until the skin is golden brown • Turn the heat to low, add butter and thyme – the residual heat should finish cooking the fish (depends on thickness of the fillet) For more information or enquiries, please call 1771 3000 @fusionsbytala / @thegulfhotelbahrain

THE 2020

MERCEDES-BENZ GLE 450

MERCEDES-BENZ HAVE CREATED A REAL COMPETITOR IN THE MIDSIZED LUXURY SUV SEGMENT WITH THE NEW GLE.

www.ohlala-magazine.com

We at Ohlala are huge fans of the Mercedes-Benz brand to say

the least and have been fortunate enough to test drive a variety of their high-end vehicles in recent times. With over 115 years of automobile manufacturing experience, the production of countless premium-class vehicles and a desire to always improve on previous offerings, it is no wonder that the Mercedes-Benz logo is one of the most prestigious and recognised emblems in the world. This month, we were given the opportunity to test drive the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4Matic by the fantastic team at Al-Haddad Motors. Upon our initial inspection of the exterior, we were most impressed by the way in which the body of the GLE manages to find a perfect balance between elegance and power. Its smooth yet bold lines and curves flow effortlessly from front to rear, ensuring this vehicle will draw admiration on the roads. At the front, the sparkling diamond radiator grille complete with head-sized Mercedes-Benz badge, announces the arrival of this SUV like a royal trumpeter. Frontal features include sporty aprons, large air inlets as well as state-of-the-art

LED technology headlamps. At the sides, you can get up to 22-inch, light-alloy wheels that emphasise the powerful nature of this 4x4 SUV and adds to the desire to get the GLE out onto the tarmac. At the rear, the GLE displays bold lines between the C-pillar and rear lamps, whilst the dual silver exhaust system not only adds to the robust presence of the vehicle but also hints at its on-road performance capabilities. The premium standard set by the GLE’s exterior is complemented by the vehicle’s equally beautiful interior. The stunning SUV design details, including all trim, materials, finishes and impressive digital displays ensure that it is a first-class experience from the moment you slip inside. The seats are supportive, heated, comfortable and provide the ideal driving position. There is ample leg and head room throughout the vehicle, and the GLE offers an optional third row of seats. The cargo area is large enough to support a family run to the airport and a first aid kit is provided for emergencies. The ambient lighting is simply stunning and changes when one adjusts certain settings. With 64 colours to choose from, this feature adds an www.ohlala-magazine.com

“It is clear that every internal feature in the GLE has been carefully and beautifully designed to ensure a functional and aesthetically pleasing environment. additional touch of class to an already impressive interior. In the centre console, there is a stylish tray that is opened by pushing a latch. Inside are two adjustable cup holders and a wireless charging system. It is clear that every internal feature in the GLE has been carefully and beautifully designed to ensure a functional and aesthetically pleasing environment. The infotainment system is hailed by many experts as the best in the car industry. Mercedes have provided all options when it comes to controllability. The entire system can be controlled via a pad on the central console, via touchscreen, via buttons on the steering wheel and via voice control. The gage cluster is also regarded by many as a cut above the rest. It is exceptionally configurable, allowing you to individually position your desired content items. Both display screens are 12.3-inches and sit under a stylish glass cover. Once out on the road, the GLE 450 4Matic continues to impress. This beauty of a machine houses a 3.0-litre, turbo-charged, 6-cylinder engine with integrated starter alternator that produces 367 hp and 369 ft-lb of torque. This ensures this Mercedes model has decent acceleration as well as a respectable top speed of around 253km/h. The suspension

of this 4x4 absorbs the bumps well ensuring a smooth ride. The cabin is quiet and the visibility is really good, assisted by large mirrors. The braking, handling and grip of the vehicle are all effective and one always feels in complete control, even at higher speeds and around sharp corners. A notable feature is the Parking Space Search Feature. At the push of a button, the vehicle will not only locate an available parking space, but parallel park the vehicle for you. Plenty of safety features have been included as standard on the GLE, but additional packages such as the Driving Assistance Package and the Parking Package with 360-degree camera are also available. Energising Comfort Control is yet another option and takes driver-fitness safety to an entirely new level. The GLE 450 is set to take the mid-sized luxury SUV segment by storm and we encourage all those seeking a high-performance, functional, practical, premium SUV to give Al-Haddad Motors a call on 1778 5454 to book a first-class test drive of your very own. MISS Ohlala

I love people who are unapologetically themselves; it is so intoxicating to find someone who loves themselves the way they are. Just don’t be pompous, and don’t impose your confidence on others. Don’t abuse self-confidence. I love confident people, but with certain limitations. People like this are hard to come by, especially in this society. Comparison is the root of all evil. It greys our days and puts a damper on everything we could ever appreciate; where we achieve something great, someone somewhere has achieved something twice as great. Instantly, the notion that we’ve improved ourselves vanishes, and is instead replaced by jealousy, saturated with a mentality of inadequacy. Why do we try to fix people? They are themselves, and we are no better. We should stop wasting our time trying to fix others. We can’t, and they aren’t very broken to begin with. The most that we can do is be there for others, to accept them the way that we found them. If you aren’t confident, find your confidence. Do not put your confidence in other people’s hands. Who are they, but a passing stranger in your life? They’re going to drop it, you know. They’re going to throw it in the bin and walk away; they always do.

LOVE THE SKIN YOU’RE IN.

MISS OHLALA DELVES DEEPER INTO THE IMPORTANCE OF LOVING YOUR WONDERFUL ATTRIBUTES TO START A RHYTHM OF CONFIDENCE AND POSITIVITY IN THE WORLD.

82

www.ohlala-magazine.com

What do you have to be insecure about? Everyone gets acne, we all just deal with it differently. All of your scars, stretch marks, bruises, freckles, birthmarks, and tattoos are nothing but paint marks on the blank canvas that you were when you were born. They are nothing but fragments of evidence to demonstrate how much you’ve lived, how traveled and weathered you are. The sun has shone on you, and

you’ve grown into something beautiful. Brilliance is attractive. Knowing and caring about something is intoxicating. Being able to stand your ground on an argument is fierce. Meaningful conversations and arguments are crucial; you are nothing without them. Be able to do things by yourself. You do not need a companion to accompany you to lunch. You can sit in silence by yourself, chewing thoughtfully and looking anywhere but down at your plate. You do not need a phone to scroll through, and you don’t need to make others think that you have friends or are busy, because when you sit by yourself and have the dignity to look around and be content with your situation, when you are justly humbled like that, you gain a level of confidence that most of us do not have the privilege of feeling.
