The Twenty~4 new model in rose gold with chocolate-brown sunburst dial This eye-catching watch pairs an 18-carat rose-gold case with a warm-tone dial. Two vertical rows of 17 Top Wesselton Pure diamonds set with textbook precision highlight the distinctive two-tier shape of the case. The clean layout of the dial gives centre stage to the applied Arabic numerals. The rose-gold bracelet with fold-over clasp is a jewel in its own right. Fully hand-polished, it feels smooth and cossetting on the wrist. The mechanical components of the Patek Philippe caliber E15 quartz movement are created with the same devotion to fine craft as those of the mechanical movements. The Twenty~4 Automatic in rose gold with gilded rose-gold sunburst dial This new piece extends the warm sheen of its case to a dial gilded with a rose-gold sunburst and hour and minute hands, applied Arabic numerals and the frame of the date aperture all fashioned in the same precious metal. A double row of diamonds in a ‘dentelle’ (lacework) setting adds a touch of brilliance, as does the fine hand-finish and decoration of the caliber 324 S C self-winding movement, visible through the sapphire-crystal caseback. The new patented fold-over clasp adds to the comfort of the bracelet, whose three rows of rose-gold links are fully hand-polished. The Twenty~4 Automatic in steel with olive-green sunburst dial This modern timepiece stands out by its elegant dial in olive green, a colour making its first appearance in the contemporary Patek Philippe collections and presented to significant effect with a glowing sunburst decoration. The white-gold applied Arabic numerals, and white-gold hands have a luminescent coating, ensuring excellent legibility under all conditions. The pure circle of the case is lit with 160 diamonds set in two staggered rows created according to the dentelle technique. A transparent caseback reveals the painstaking hand-finish and decoration lavished on the caliber 324 S C self-winding movement. The polished steel bracelet features a new, patented fold-over clasp secured by four independent catches.

By using the golden ratio, directly related to the diameter of the Chopard 09.01-C movement with automatic winding powering its ladies’ watch collections, the case of the Happy Sport has been redesigned with a 33mm diameter that is particularly well suited to the female wrist. Since antiquity, this mathematical balance has been found in science, art and architecture, reproducing the harmony prevalent in nature. Seven new references join the collection in a wide variety of models: four two-tone options featuring a Lucent Steel A223 case embellished with ethical 18-carat rose gold; and three entirely crafted from ethical 18-carat rose gold, available on a leather strap or metal bracelet. The eighth version in ethical 18-carat white gold is entirely set with diamonds. All of them beat to the Chopard Manufacture 09.01-C movement rhythm with automatic winding, and each dial is graced with the legendary dancing diamonds. A jewellery version is also available in ethical 18-carat white gold, entirely set with

diamonds and featuring a mother-of-pearl dial to round out the collection. The Lucent Steel A223 is an anti-allergenic alloy that is brighter and sturdier than ordinary steel. Finally, it testifies to Chopard’s commitment to sustainable luxury: Lucent Steel A223 is 70 per cent made from recycled materials in a state-of-the-art workshop located in Austria, thereby limiting the carbon footprint relating to shipping materials to Chopard’s Swiss workshops.

The process of product application follows this basic sequence: cleanser, toner, serum, moisturiser and sunscreen, if in the morning. There are other specific products that are applied in between, such as scrubs, eye-cream and oils, but this is a basic and daily routine. If you dedicate time to follow these simple steps am and pm, you will get great results in the long run. However, how do you keep up with this kind of routine while travelling? Small packaging is the first solution. Most brands offer their products in smaller containers, but you can also buy or save small sealed pots. Do take your own beauty bag with essentials and avoid applying hotel amenities, they might not be right for your skin and also may not be of the best quality.

This Ramadan, Izil, a skin and haircare brand from the Middle East, created an advent calendar featuring a range of products, and the OHLALA team had the pleasure of testing them out!

he Middle Eastern skin and haircare brand Izil offers various products made with natural ingredients found in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region. Using 100-per-cent natural ingredients is their motto. Skincare and haircare are a beauty priority in most girls’ lives and, during the Holy Month, extra care should be devoted to the biggest organ in our bodies –– our skin. Thinking about women’s and men’s needs, Izil created a 30-day Ramadan advent calendar with some of their products in mini sizes to be tested out. We separated them amongst our team according to each one’s skin and hair type; here’s what each one had to say. Omnia Elamir Graphic Designer One of the products that I tried was the handmade soap from Morocco, and it was foamy, which left my hands soft but not oily to the touch and gave the skin a tighter feel. The Rosy Glow Toner removed the dirt from my skin without drying it out. It had a lovely scent of rose water, and I felt that it hydrated my skin pretty well. The White Clay Powder was wonderful to 48

exfoliate without being harsh. Having oily skin, this product improved my complexion, my foundation glided on flawlessly, and my makeup looked better. In the hair care area, I tried the Argan Nourishing Shampoo. It cleaned the hair without stripping it of moisture, left a pleasant natural smell and my scalp felt fresh and my hair less frizzy, which made styling easier. The Argan Nourishing Conditioner had a creamy consistency and helped detangle my curls, keeping a soft touch throughout the day. I only wished that there was a bit more of these products for a better experience. Sara Waddah Digital Editor The Argan Nourishing Conditioner was perfect for helping nourish and bring my curls back to life after wash day. I applied it to the mid-lengths of my hair and then rinsed it out; the conditioner was able to moisturise my locks and give them a shiny appearance. After being out in the sun all day, Izil’s Rose Micellar Cleansing Water was able to cool my face down with its anti-inflammatory properties. As well as making me feel refreshed after exposing my face to the sun’s rays, the product also removed any residue of dirt that was building up.

BEAUTY Spotlight With a strong woody fragrance, the Royal Oud Argan Oil was the best pick for moisturising my body after taking a long bath. Rich in all the essential nutrients that helped nurse my skin back to smoothness, the product was effective and smelled great. One of my favourites was the 100-per-cent Pure Black Seed Oil. By using a tiny amount with a regular moisturiser, the oil helped tackle parts of my skin that were uncomfortable due to laser procedures. As well as getting rid of the redness, it calmed and soothed the area almost instantly. Liz O’Reilly Editorial Director The Orange Blossom Ultra-Hydrating Dry Oil gets a definite thumbs up. I have two inherited frizzy patches of hair, so I used this instead of my regular Argan oil. It was equally effective with the bonus of smelling great. In fact, I was so impressed with the scent that I also slathered it onto the dehydrated skin on my arms – I stayed soft and fragrant all day long. I also loved the Moroccan Soap – Eucalyptus. I’m not a fan of hammams as I’m not keen on being scrubbed to within an inch of my life. However, this gave that black-soap experience in my own shower and left my skin feeling fabulous. I also tried a skin scrub, which was quite gentle but effective, and the Re-Mineralising Body Mask – a bit of a strange sensation, but it smelled good and left the skin on my elbows feeling rejuvenated. The Regenerating Serum was quickly absorbed and would probably be fine for someone with ‘normal’ skin. However, my complexion is super-dry and quite delicate, and this just didn’t feel rich enough for an, admittedly, pretty tough job. Lastly, the Pure Orange Blossom Water Toner. I wanted to like this; I really did, because it smells good. But, unfortunately, I found it very drying – not surprising really, as my regular routine does not include toner for exactly this reason. Fernanda Langhammer Editor I am a big fan of skincare, and I follow my beauty routine religiously, so I was over the moon to try Izil’s products. I started by adding the Ghassoul Clay Powder, replacing my once-a-week mask moment. You are supposed to mix a bit of the powder with water and apply it to your clean skin. The drying feeling was a bit strange, but the result was excellent. The texture afterwards was soft and pleasant. I do not scrub my face too often, maybe once every 15 days, and I used the Illuminating Almond Scrub this time around. The texture of the scrub is fantastic; it has little pieces of almond and smells great. Result wise, it did its job without leaving my skin dry, which is very important to me. I also tried two 100-per-cent oils, Argan (that I used in my hair and cuticles and loved it!) and Prickly Pear Seed (that I applied under my eyes to hydrate and help with dark circles, the skin in the area does appear moistened, I will keep using it). The Pure Damask Rose Water Toner had a great smell, but I felt that it left my complexion a bit dry, and I saw myself applying a more significant amount of moisturiser. And last but not least, I loved the Antibacterial Hand Sanitiser, which is very practical these days and comes in a perfect size to fit even the littlest pocket.

essange is now feeling like home to me, a place where I can get all my girly needs in check. From hair, nails and facials (and hopefully very soon spa treatments) to a healthy body with the proper exercise (the Dessange Health Club offers different activities to suit all tastes and fitness levels) and nutritious juices and snacks. Where else can you get this pampered in Bahrain? All in a comforting atmosphere that makes you feel you are where you belong. Dessange is a reference in terms of women’s beauty and health on our incredible island. This time, I further investigated the activities offered in the health club. I know it might not sound true, but I had never tried Pilates in my life before, and to be honest, I had a completely wrong impression of it. To start, I thought it was too easy, and the runner here would not find it challenging enough. I couldn’t have been more mistaken. It is way more strenuous than it looks – trust me! My Pilates instructor, Slavka, introduced me to this famous set of core exercises. She explained that at Dessange, you have two options for this

low-impact workout: mat and Stott Pilates (also known as the reformer). The former is done on the floor following a sequence of positions and breathing techniques (the method created by Joseph Pilates), while the latter uses unique pieces of equipment developed by the Merrithew sisters. Some of the differences between the two types are that mat Pilates works with an imprinted position (when the lower back is slightly pushed towards the floor). In Stott, the exercises are done in a neutral position (when the lumbar spine’s natural curve is present). Also, the mat doesn’t require extra materials, while Stott is done on specific wooden machinery, sliding platforms with a foot bar, springs and pulleys that provide resistance. I was booked for the Stott Pilates. Looking at all the machinery, my initial impression that it was going to be an easy task started to fade, and I was pretty intimidated by it. Slavka first gave me a sequence of simple leg movements that progressed to more challenging positions and intensity. We then moved to the upper body involving arms and even my neck. Something I learned about Pilates is that there are different levels, from beginner to advanced.

According to my instructor, this kind of exercise is excellent to improve flexibility, strength, and it corrects postural alignment. But it also builds muscle and teaches you how to control your body, all while practising breathing techniques. Stott is recommended for all types of people, even pregnant ladies and those with special health conditions. When you join the classes, the instructor will conduct a full assessment to understand your needs and prepare a personalised programme. The workout is usually conducted individually or in small groups and the instructor gives her full attention to your movements in the period of 45 minutes to one hour, which is the duration of the class. I have to confess, I didn’t know that this kind of exercise was precisely what I needed. Thank you, Dessange! My main goal at this point in my life is to tone my body and improve flexibility in the older years to come. And Pilates, in this case Stott Pilates, is the kind of exercise I should keep in my life from now on, together with my running days. Is it painful? Yes! Was I sore the next day? Yes! Was it highly challenging? Yes again. But I guess that’s the reason I feel this kind of workout is ideal for me. I moved muscles I didn’t even know I had; I paid attention to my breathing while stretching and contracting, and I tested my limits. I concluded that this kind of exercise treats your body as a whole. Everything is connected, and a series of movements is built to wake up every little part of your body to make it function better. It also makes the muscles in crucial areas stronger, fending off uncomfortable sensations such as back pain and stiff shoulders and neck (in my case due to the many hours in front of the computer). The Pilates classes can be done in single encounters or as a package of 10 sessions. Also, if you need extra motivation, you can train in buddy sessions with friends.

adventure is dangerous, try routine, it is lethal.” He was definitely a bit too dramatic, but yes, a routine can drag you down and looking for new things to do is a necessity. Travelling was a way of changing scenery but, as we are well aware, Covid-19 made going on a trip a distant memory. The solution to embarking on a new adventure without leaving Bahrain – a staycation! I have to confess that I was unsure what to expect when we checked in at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. I was excited to get away from our home and tiring routine, and I certainly knew that I was ready to experience a beachfront resort with a Maldivian feel in the heart of the Kingdom. This sounded like one of the best ideas of all time, but would this feel like a real escape? Keep reading if you want to find out! At the reception, you can already feel that an incredible stay is waiting for you; the welcoming feeling at the lobby and helpful staff are a fantastic start. We arrived at this city resort in the middle of the afternoon, and Avee, the lovely receptionist at the check-in, explained all about the hotel and wished us a pleasant stay. The weather was just perfect, and we couldn’t wait to

explore this beautiful property spanning 20 acres of lush gardens and golden sandy beaches. We are a family of four, and my eldest child was turning 16, so we had an extra reason to plan something special over the weekend. And the team at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain couldn’t have made her happier with balloons and decorations plus an awesome cake waiting for us in our room. Which, by the way, was located on the seventh floor, The Club Lounge floor. The view, as you can imagine, was breathtaking! We had an unobstructed picture of the immense pool, white-sand beach and the open sea that shows its expanse behind the lagoon that’s been created to make your beach experience safe and private. The room was the perfect size with a comfortable king-size bed, a separate wardrobe area, a sofa and a centre table. The big screen TV can be rotated to be watched from the lounge area or the bed. However, the highlight has to go to the bathroom. A big and deep bathtub was waiting for us, and my kids couldn’t wait to get in. A massive separate area with a state-of-the-art rain shower and toilet was hidden behind glass doors, making these bits entirely private. Perfect for a family with many members and all sorts of needs.

We quickly got changed into our swimsuits to enjoy the rest of the day (I promised my kids they could get in the bathtub before dinner). We crossed the bridge over the extensive pool, thinking of returning to it later because we had our eyes on the beach. Bahrain doesn’t offer many good beach areas, and we absolutely love a beach vibe. Sandcastles and crystalline water were all we wanted. As I mentioned previously, the weather was just perfect, not too hot and not cold at all. We enjoyed the beach until sunset, when it was time to go back to our bedroom and get ready for dinner (don’t forget that a relaxing time in the tub was also in the schedule). Our evening meal was reserved at the Ritz Gourmet Lounge, a restaurant that transports you to Paris with its Belle Époque décor and elegant features such as rich velvet upholstered Napoleon chairs and sofas for a chic ambience like a ‘salon de thé’. Our eyes were immediately directed to the ceiling, where you can spot paintings in golden frames, fighting gravity. The menu is not extensive and serves straightforward and comforting food. We ordered a Mezze (because I am a hummus lover), two pasta dishes (the vegetarians needed something soothing), the local Sea Bass and the Fennel and Halloumi Salad. All to be shared and enjoyed by the four of us. The Executive Pastry Chef Jonathan Challenor came to our table right when we were eating our ice-creams and insisted that we had the famous Classic Cheesecake. We were feeling satisfied; however, we had to try it, and it was the best decision of the night! We are still dreaming of it. I highly recommend it if you haven’t tried it yet, and if you have, I’m probably making you drool at the memory of its flavour and unique soft texture, well balanced with the crunchy biscuit dough. The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain offers 13 dining experiences, all with their own characteristics and personality. From Mexican flavours at Cantina Kahlo to Nirvana, led by Chef Mahipal Singh, reflecting the decadent décor of India’s palaces. This fine-dining restaurant offers authentic dishes, including kebabs and grilled seafood. An invitation, if one were needed, to stay even longer to truly savour this city resort’s extraordinary cuisine selection.

REGIONAL Escapes

The night was enjoyable, and we decided to go for a walk. The hotel is beautifully illuminated at night, and the track that takes you to the island in front of the beach is the perfect setting for some exercise. A few joggers and guests passed us by, appreciating the pleasant evening, just like us. It was time to go to bed and wake up early to enjoy this amazing stay at its most. The breakfast was served at the Ritz Gourmet Lounge, so we headed back to this dessert and pastry sanctuary. The fresh bread and hot black coffee were all I needed to start the day. We went back to our room, and once again, were in our swimsuits to enjoy the morning. As beach aficionados, we went straight there to lay down in the beach lounges, play once again in the sand and walk in the low tidewaters. We remembered that we didn’t go to the pool the day before, so we decided to spend the rest of our day in the cooling pool water, kids playing and adults just relaxing under the shade of the enormous umbrella. The warm breeze blowing was a blissful touch to a very pleasant ‘by the pool’ atmosphere.

The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain has an incredible location at the heart of Seef, though you completely forget that the city is behind you and functioning at full speed. Time stopped for us. We fully embraced relaxation mode, and when leaving the hotel premises, we were happy that we didn’t have to go to the airport and wait for a flight back to Bahrain. We could just drive home. My staycation at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain ticked all the boxes and more. I completely disconnected and forgot about worries and routine and was able to embrace this mini holiday with all my passion for travelling. CHIC Eats I grab a glass of Qamar-Eddin juice, and savour it slowly, enjoying the balmy weather. And then, there she is, the harp lady in a floating red dress. She takes her place welcoming the crowd with a familiar melody, and you find yourself starting to sing along “Marhab Marhab ya hilal, Ahlan Ahlan kaifal-hal” and we automatically smile with the tune of this beautiful melody. A lot of people might think that food is a big deal in Ramadan but, at least to me, I can tell you, it is the spirit. Be assured that InterContinental Regency has ticked the boxes in all aspects. The Mezze plates are well prepared. The drinks are perfect, not too sweet, and not too light – full of flavour, but not sugar! The main course is a collection—a huge plate of mixed grills that is more than enough for four people. A family-sized plate of Mansaf or Qoozi topped with the most tender and perfectly cooked lamb shank. There is also Harees, Mahshee (zucchini and eggplant), Saloona, and pasta. What a real embodiment of generosity and abundance!

he BMW 5-Series boasts a rich tradition dating back to 1972. Now in its seventh generation, this executive model is enjoying global popularity with discerning customers. We at OHLALA have always admired and respected the BMW brand and have had the privilege of test driving a multitude of models over the years, all of which have been impressive to say the least. This month, thanks to the outstanding team at Euro Motors, we received the opportunity to thoroughly inspect the new BMW 520i Sedan as well as see what it’s capable of on the roads. The sporty nature of the 520i Sedan is obvious as soon as you lay your eyes on it. With its large, clean surfaces, beautiful lines and athletic proportions, this vehicle is definitely something you would like to see in your garage every morning. The lengthy bonnet is complemented by the bold BMW kidney grille featuring a new octagonal form, whilst adaptive LED headlights with automatic range control are fitted as standard, all of which deliver a solid visual impact. The set-back passenger compartment, short overhangs and long wheelbase display the now familiar dimensions of the BMW 5 Series, that we have come to know and love. The aerodynamic design of the 520i is obvious

from the flanks and 18-inch wheels with red or blue painted callipers are fitted as standard. At the rear, new L-shaped taillights with black edging add yet another touch of class to an already beautiful exterior. Trapezoid tailpipe finishers are now fitted as standard on all BMW 5 Series models and are integrated into the rear apron inlay on both the right and left sides. Slipping inside the vehicle, we were greeted by a stunningly beautiful interior with loads of room available. All materials, trims and finishes used are of the highest quality as one would expect from BMW and this combined with precise workmanship, delivers a modern, premium ambience to the new 5 Series’ cabin. The interior blends contemporary elegance with a driver-focused cockpit design, ensuring an ideal environment for a journey of any length. The electrically adjustable front seats are supportive and exceptionally comfy whilst the automatic climate control with extended features further adds to the comfort on offer. Increasing the functionality of the vehicle are the large storage compartments, door pockets as well as dual drink holders in both the front and rear. We also found the leg, head and shoulder room to be very generous, with three adults fitting easily in the back. The luggage compartment has a load capacity of 530 litres, an area hugely increased with the rear seats folded flat.

DIVA Drives The iDrive control and operation system of the BMW 520i comprises a freestanding Control Display that now includes, as standard, a 10.25-inch screen featuring outstanding graphic quality. This Control Display can be upgraded to a 12.3-inch unit if requested. We found this system to be very user-friendly and easily navigated our way through all the functions. Newly designed controls on the centre console have surfacing in highgloss black and, along with the standard leather steering wheel with freshly arranged multifunction buttons, add to the refinement of this luxury sedan. Once out on the roads, the fun really began. The 520i is powered by a fourcylinder, in-line petrol engine that includes mild hybrid technology and an eight-speed Steptronic transmission. It has a capacity of 1998cc and an output of 184hp at 5000 to 6500rpm. It produces 290Nm of torque at 1350 to 4250rpm and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a respectable 7.9 seconds. It boasts a top speed of 235km/h and, believe us when we tell you, this car feels fast! With excellent handling, suspension, and cornering abilities, supported by a superb braking system, we always felt in complete control of the driving experience. With a vast array of driver assistance and safety features, you can relax in the knowledge that the master craftsmen at BMW have done everything possible to ensure the safety of all occupants.

His journeying mainly occurred in the lands of Dar Al-Islam, and he was the explorer that travelled more than any other in pre-modern history. He wrote one of the world’s most famous travel logs, the Rihlah. His work describes people, places and cultures he encountered in the 120,000km spanned across and beyond the Islamic world. Travelling is now one of the most praised leisure activities of the modern world, it is easy to visit every corner of the globe, you are just one flight or a couple of flights away from everywhere. Much, much easier than during Ibn Battuta’s times. However, Covid-19 changed this reality. We can’t just go to places as we could before or at least not with the same ease. There are restrictions and the fear of being infected. So, we dream of travelling, making plans, and going on a voyage through the pages of a magazine or TV show. We explore our own countries, visiting places we would never go to, and experience spectacular staycations; yes, there are various hotels and resorts in our city that are worth a visit. We keep being astonished by new things, and we tell stories differently; we are human beings, we adapt. So, what are the stories you are going to tell next?
