Editor’s Letter

Call of the Wild

So, we’ve fallen in love with two exceptional accessory brands this month – MaisonDuPosh and NS by Noof – both of which we discovered in Bahrain and are now high up on our fashion radar of must-haves for their distinctive embodiment of opulence with a twist. The free-spirited designers – one man, one woman – have a sharp inspiring sense of style and both found their place in the fashion world by following their inner calling – the call of their wild intrinsic nature – uninhibited and limitless. Not for the faint-hearted, MaisonDuPosh has a distinctively edgy, rock-chic personality. We had the pleasure of chatting with Sam Sky, the candidly spiritual man behind these expressive, eclectic creations. The world of NS by Noof is a universe cultivated by queens and maharajas, empresses and princesses, a sense of regality that Bahrain-born Noof Al Shekar herself embodies, taking her inimitable creations to a new level of vibrancy. Other highlights of our May issue include an exclusive with celebrity Kate Moss, who shares with us her beauty secrets as she launches her new Idol Eyes Collection for Rimmel London – shades inspired by the mysterious, rich and sensual bohemian culture. Then there’s the innovative, platinum selling artist and BRIT Award winner Kate Nash, who we catch up with to find out why she has traded London life for the bright lights of LA. Waking yourself up out of a daily slumber is essential for your inner being. Treat your body as a temple and take the time to reinvigorate your mind with our Wellbeing and Fitness guide. We showcase the top venues to visit and their tips for a healthier, happier you. We call on you to ignite the light that burns within each of us, to fan the flames of passion and follow your innate desires to live life to the fullest, to lift the restrictions of the mind and reach your highest potential of greatness. A gallery of Jewellery artistry

The epitome of charm and femininity, the Diva watch collection by Bvlgari, composes a multi-facetted universe of precious jewellery paintings.

The Diva watch proudly proclaims its roots in the founding jewellery values of the House. A reference to the golden age of silver screen legends, Diva embodies the Dolce Vita era during which Bulgari and the world of movies were inseparable. For decades and through to the present day, Bulgari has been closely linked to the most iconic celebrities. Embodying a tribute paid by Bulgari to these timeless moments, the Diva watch collection is interpreted through the many expressions of Haute Joaillerie. Drawing inspiration from modern day divas, it captures the spirit of glamour, exalts the graceful charm and reflects the radiance of contemporary feminine icons who, along with Bulgari, convey a blend of glamour, charisma, sensuality and passion.

24

OHLALA!

In much the same way as the pictorial arts, the Diva covers a prodigiously varied spectrum of expression. An abundance of gemstone and colour combinations compose jewellery scenes encompassing a broad range of colours. From shimmering turquoise, diamonds and tourmaline to the pristine beauty of white embodied in the diamond alone, as well as the restrained glow of gold enhanced by gently contrasting coloured pearls, All of these watch creations vividly represent the history of the House and the symbols that have punctuated its history through the decades. In just a few clever touches, the Diva watch provides a temporal measure of jewellery artistry by interpreting the infinitely subtle nuances of this spellbinding register.

Eternal Springtime Nature is one of Van Cleef & Arpels’ major sources of inspiration, breathing vitality and poetry into its creations…

The floral world of Van Cleef & Arpels As if in some bejeweled, eternal springtime, sprigs of lily-ofthe-valley mingle with bunches of wildflowers, four-leaf clovers fuse with Cosmos flowers to unite luck and nature in a single protective couple. The freshness and vivacity of this enchanted garden has inspired a thousand and one interpretations. Each wearer is free to play with these symbols and materials, according to the mood and the occasion, to compose their own bejeweled bouquet to create a “kosmos” – or world of harmony in Greek. 28

Precious duets…

Combining the ethereal quality of a four-leaf clover with the grace of a flower, the collection expresses a delightful femininity graced by luck. The shimmer of mother-of-pearl complements the softness of pink gold in a tender hymn to nature. Onyx and white gold compose a refined and luminous duet, suffused with timeless elegance.

The flowers of Cosmos bloom afresh… An explosion of Spring blossoms adorned with white motherof-pearl and onyx. With their subtle blend of softness and brilliance, these jewellery creations offer fresh homage to nature and luck, two of the Maison’s most cherished sources of inspiration. www.ohlala-magazine.com

oof Al Shekar embodies regality with effortless grace and poise – playing a role in her own story – a universe cultivated by queens and maharajas, empresses and princesses, with her unique creations that take classics to a new level of vibrancy. Leaving the systematic world of business and banking long behind for the expressive freedom that the fashion world could offer, Noof ’s exploration evolved from jewellery design into clutches – timeless, unique and precious. With a nod to the grand cultures of Andalucian times, the clutches are created in exotic leathers, intricately carved and shaped 22k gold-plated brass and crowned with unique gems. Noof tells us that, “Each work of art is handcrafted by jewellery artisans in Lebanon, with exquisite attention to detail.” By 2015 the brand plans to evolve their style and expertise by having each piece made in Italy. Drawing on her background in jewellery, Noof ’s signature is the natural, handpicked, semi-precious stone, which crowns each of her clutches, endearing them with an aura of rich exclusivity. “The NS by Noof woman has a daring personality with a unique sense of fashion,” Noof shares. “She appreciates beauty and the quality of timeless pieces, which can be passed down from generation to generation.” With maturity in taste she has a passion for opulent, statement pieces – talking points of any and every occasion. NS by Noof is a collection that evolves over time – like treasures, collectors’ pieces, with only one or two new additions being added each season

to protect its exceptionality. “Riches that gradually transform into collections, so ethereal and silently distinct. “It’s exotic, true to its roots, celebrating jewellery, a timeless piece that carries forward the richness of Arabia in a modern way – always crowned with a stone,” Noof explains. And which celebrity would Noof most like to crown with her clutches? “Jennifer Lopez,” Noof smiles, “she adores jewellery and wears the biggest bling.” Living with her family, a husband and four children, Noof ’s own elegant style blends high street with high fashion – “classic with a twist... It’s about comfort and what looks and falls right,” she tells us, “some of my favourite pieces are from Forever 21.” NS by Noof is available at J Boutique in Moda Mall, Bahrain & 51 East in Lagoona Mall, Qatar. www.nsbynoof.com www.ohlala-magazine.com

There is a massive modest fashion explosion taking place globally now, which is amazing to witness. Key pieces in your wardrobe My Seven For All Mankind jeans, a maxi white shirt, sequined peg trousers, black tuxedo blazer, dip hem tops, pleated maxi skirts, and lots and lots of scarves. Tips for wannabe bloggers Blogging takes a lot of hard work, dedication and time. Start blogging because it’s something you love and want to share with the world; don’t start blogging just for the perks and think success will come over night.

MISS OHLALA!

Escapades of a single 20-something girl... LOVE FUEL

They say I am an idealist, however even I have doubts at times. But every now and then you meet someone that restores your fate in life, love and serendipity. This month I will not talk about my story, but instead a story that moved me deeply that I believe needs to be shared. 19-year-old Monika went on a family vacation with her family to Greece, they traveled 32 hours from Prague by bus to keep the trip affordable. The last night of their vacation her younger brother convinced her to accompany him to a bar, although she was very hesitant. As she walked into the crowded taverna, she noticed Amara fairly quickly because he was the tallest and fittest man she had ever seen. They chatted a little and exchanged numbers, and parted ways thinking that was the end when in fact it was the beginning of a fairy tale-esque romance. Three months later, after endless hours and sleepless nights on Skype, Monika packs a carry-on and boards a flight to Athens to go see him again.Taking a leap of fate, her mother paid for her flight ticket. She was a student at the time and was travelling with only 20 euros in her pocket, taking a plane for the first time to meet a man she ultimately did not know. Amara, the tall athlete who was orignally from the Ivory Coast but was based in Doha, was in Europe again for training. Years go by and Monika and Amara stay together, meeting any opportunity they got although the frequency was wilting. To make matters more complicated, her Czech Republic passport couldn’t get her into Qatar and his Ivory Coast passport couldn’t get him into the Czech Republic without a visa. Could it be more complicated? Yes. Although she did get the visa once before, the renewal was rejected. As for Amara, well there was no Czech Republic consulate in Doha, so he would have to take a holiday to travel to Kuwait to apply 48

for a visa, every time he wanted to visit her. Monika graduated from University and started applying for jobs in Doha, in all fields from cabin crew to secretarial work, until she lost hope. Amara also tried to move to Czech Republic but the salary and benefits in his package in Qatar where incomparable – after all he had an extended family in Ivory Coast depending on him. By then her friends and family told her to move on with her life that she was wasting her time, but luck kicked in. Once she had lost hope and started a career in marketing in the Czech Republic, she finally got the call she had been waiting for since she had graduated two years ago. It was a job offer in Doha! And after a series of interviews Monika was finally able to relocate to Qatar, to work at one of the luxury hotels in the city. Life may not be perfect, but after eight years of struggle with impossible circumstances the couple are now living in Doha engaged to be married soon, finally living a normal relationship. Goosebumps shoot up my body every time I think of them – forever I will think of Monika before ever giving up because I can see now that with determination powered by love, you can always get what you want! Tata for now, until next time. Miss Ohlala!

THE CAUSE

A Nurturing Society

Starting with only 30 members six decades ago, the Children and Mothers Welfare Society (CMWS) have achieved great successes since its modest beginnings in 1953.

H

eaded then by Sheikha Lulua bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, the Society aims to “raise women’s cultural standards and enhance their awareness of social issues and their rights and duties as active individuals in the community… always seeking to achieve progress.” Currently headed by Sheikha Lulua’s daughter, Sheikha Hind bint Salman Al Khalifa, CMWS has a three-way objective: Educational (for children and for people with special needs and providing information regarding women and children for students and researchers); Economic (aid to the poor and the needy; provision of loans for small business projects, and supporting the university student fund) and; Social (educational and recreational services for members of the Assembly and participation in conferences, seminars, local and global regarding women issues). “Our vision is to create a platform around the issues of economic empowerment and equal participation of women and children in all walks of life, for the progress of society, culture and the nation as a whole,” says Sheikha Hind. CMWS runs several institutions under its supervision, which include Kindergartens, Tailoring Workshops, a Cultural Centre for Children, an Information Centre for Women & Children, the Hope Institute for the Handicapped, a Paper Manufacturing Centre, Koran Recital Centre, and the Microstart Project. The society undertakes several activities throughout the year, including symposia, donation campaigns, training programs, various projects and their annual Charity Bazaar, where delegates from several diplomatic missions in the Kingdom take part to display and sell products of the countries they represent.

This year’s bazaar (which is set to be even bigger next year) was held at the Society’s Isa Town headquarters, to raise funds to support their Kindergarten Program. In a reception held at the French Ambassador’s residence, Ms Zeyna Testot, wife of the French Ambassador to France HE Christian Testot, handed over the funds raised with a check worth BD4,055 to Sheikha Hind. “We are happy to see the large number of contributing embassies this year,” says Sheikha Hind, “and we welcomed some new participants, like Brunei and Sri Lanka, as well as those who came back, after taking a break for some time, such as Iraq and Tunisia.”

“Our vision is to create a platform around the issues of economic empowerment and equal participation of women and children.”

Art & Culture

A Colourful World

Irina Averinos’ paintings are not only moving – but they also capture life’s passing perceptual moments. Her works can be described as straightforward, descriptive realism. Words by Karina Lazarraga IMAGE of artist by Shobin Joseph

A

painting is unlike an ordinary photo or copy, it is a story, a message from the artist. Artists can see more, which others may not otherwise notice – and they can put these impressions on canvas,” says Irina. This is perhaps why Irina favours realism in her work: “With realism, you do not need to describe what’s been painted on the canvas. Everybody can see and understand it.” Indeed, with her pieces – stunningly beautiful, with bands of magnificent colours – one cannot help but be moved by emotions. Irina also favours bringing positive energy to her creations, and her art truly conveys this – as her paintings are “warm and sunny”, bringing forth great colour harmony, balance and rhythm. “If you are in a bad mood, just take a look at my paintings and you will simply feel better, happier; because my colours are bright and I don’t tend to use black in my work,” she explains. This is in fact, the insistent physicality of Irina’s works. Working primarily with oils on varying subjects such as seascapes, landscapes, flowers, birds, animals, and still life – her penchant for using bold shades adds a certain splendour to her pieces. “I like sunrises and sunsets for their magnificent

dramatic colours. I paint all things – taking inspiration from the beauty of nature,” expresses Irina; embodying what Rembrandt once said, “A painting is the grandchild of nature. It’s related to God... Choose only one master – Nature.” To this, Irina adds: “I paint when I am happy and I am happy when I paint.” Irina’s artistic flair may seem farfetched when you find out that she is in fact an automated control systems engineer by profession. But who’s to say we can only wear one hat? Born in Tuapse, a Russian city on the Black Sea Coast, the artist has lived in Bahrain (from Jordan) since 1996. Upon arriving, Irina instantly fell in love with the place. “Bahrain was, and is very different from where I grew up but is a very friendly and lovely place,” she says. Irina lost her parents in a car accident when she was a baby. She was raised by

her grandparents, whom she says she’s lucky to have as, “They were excellent parents to me; they were patient and gave me lots of good advice,” she recalls. They were also creative people and encouraged Irina in all her early artistic pursuits. Many years on, with her own children all grown up and with spare time on her hands, she immersed herself in painting, discovering that it was something that she always wanted to do. Irina’s art mirrors a romantic love of beauty – transferring onto canvas the experiences, emotions and scenes she has carefully observed. Art has a powerful effect, as Irina’s paintings evoke. Pulling all the stops of realist art, she paints in the most perfect way she knows possible – with a powerful visual presentation. “I do not like talking a lot, I DO, rather than just talk.” And with her paintings, this Irina has rightly achieved. Natural-born TV presenter, Noura Assar, takes Bahrain’s media world by storm. Words by Sana Alibux, IMAGES by george mathew

Y

oung media queen, Noura Assar, at only 23 years, tells Ohlala! her story about how she reached her ideal career in broadcast journalism. Her ambitious and nonchalant attitude possesses an undeniable show of who she is as a presenter on Bahrain TV’s hit show “Hala Bahrain.” Her journey began when she started getting engrossed in her studies, which include both Mass Communications and Public Relations. This program led to the opportunity of working at Bahrain TV as a presenter for the show. While interviewing Noura, I had the pleasure of noticing her grace and poise, which makes her stand out in the fast-paced media world. “I really am a big people person!” Noura gushes. “It’s a must because it’s the core basis of my field – having to know how to talk to different types of people everyday because you never know who you are going to deal with next,” she says with laughter that oozes approachability. Noura started flourishing in her career through the debut presentation she gave at Bahrain City Centre for Virgin megastore. This was a major deal because it was her first ever exposure on Bahrain television. Noura shares with us that there is a specific dress code for each segment she has to air depending on the type of occasion. Each theme corresponds to the style she represents. For instance, when a segment was being aired in the desert (Sakhir), she had to wear casual clothing, which included a simple sweater and sunglasses with an up-style hairdo. Whereas for the segments aired during Eid, she wore a Jalabiya (a multi-coloured traditional dress) designed by a young Bahraini designer in order to celebrate the festivities of Eid for the consecutive three days. Not only does Noura represent a thriving, female icon in Bahrain for her dedication as a national presenter in media; but she also participates in philanthropic activities in her down time. “I participated in a short film that won a competition staged by the Supreme Council for Women in Bahrain to raise awareness

Women talking

for Breast Cancer.” Her dedicated work ethic and humanitarianism conveys the shaping of a true media connoisseur. As a national representative on Bahrain TV, she seems to know exactly how to get what she wants out of her interviewees. Noura tells us that each individual she interviews is unique and she appreciates each difference, knowing how to embrace these qualities well. One of Noura’s other passions is teaching, which she believes is a lot like presenting on television. “It’s the giving and receiving of knowledge, which really moves me,” she says gracefully with ease. This is why TV reporting is so interesting; the research of the topic is education in itself; a proactive world of constant learning. And Noura’s top two favourite inspirations of all time? “Definitely I would say, Tyra Banks because she is very bubbly and interesting,” she laughs, then continues, “and also Wafa Al Kilany who is an amazing Egyptian presenter on television.” These female icons continue to inspire Noura to be the best media representative that she can be. Let this be a great calling for young females everywhere in Bahrain; nothing can hold us down from achieving our dreams.

Multi-instrumentalist and recording artist Kate Nash first burst onto the music scene in 2007, although her career first kicked into gear in 2005, following an accident that left her housebound. It happened to coincide with the emergence of MySpace and she used the social networking service to promote her music. “I played piano when I was young and I liked singing and writing songs at school, but it was when I got rejected from university and was working at Nando’s, and fell down the stairs and broke my foot, that I really considered what I was doing and where I was going. I booked a gig and after I played my first show, I realised that music was what I wanted to pursue. I was hooked.” So did the music she grew up with influence her own writing tastes? “My parents had my sisters and I listening to great music when we were growing up: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Harry Nilsson, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin and lots of other good stuff.” April 2007 saw Kate sign to Polydor offshoot label Fiction Records and her second single Foundations, which she co-wrote with producer Paul Epworth, reached number two in the UK singles chart. Her debut album ‘Made of Bricks’ followed in August and leaped to the two of the album charts. Further successes followed, including collaboration with former Suede guitarist 58

OHLALA!

“A person should be able to be themselves, full stop. I like to think that my music is empowering. It can be hard for kids coming out and I think that’s why they like my music. It celebrates being the outsider.” Bernard Butler, who went onto produce her

second studio album. With almost a decade in the industry, I wondered how she felt the music business had changed. “For my third album, ‘Girl Talk’, which I launched last year, I did it on my own record label, Have 10p. Moving from a major label to my own label was a big challenge, but I see a trend in a lot of musicians going that way, wanting more control over their output and image. With platforms like Kickstarter, funding an album can now be in the hands of the musician.” With so many reality TV options now

available to aspiring artists, did she believe

the medium delivered a negative impact on the industry? “Reality TV can push someone to the forefront, who may have never had the chance otherwise, so I think it is positive in that way, but I don’t support mocking people on reality music shows for ratings. It’s not healthy human behaviour or a positive message to send to young people.” Kate’s new video ‘Sister’ has a very punk-rock sound to it, so I asked her what the inspiration behind the song was. “I wrote Sister, along with most of the Girl Talk album on the bass guitar, so all of the songs have a more raw edge to the underlying pop melodies. For Sister it was based around friendship and love and boundaries and reconciliation – the deep bond females share.” So how does she feel women in the business today are perceived? “It’s an exciting time for women globally, as there are a lot of strong women coming out and standing up for gender equality and how women are perceived in media and in business, across multiple industries. Perceptions still need to be changed, as to how women are perceived in business, but it feels that more conversations are happening to address key issues.” Having utilised the Internet to help launch her career, how important does she feel technology and social media is to the modern artist? “The Internet is important www.ohlala-magazine.com

Celebrity Scoop

to ‘everyone’. How could we even function without it? Social media is integral to today’s artists. It enables musicians to do a lot of their own marketing and to reach their fans on a greater and more intimate level.” As a big fan of British culture, what led Kate to America and how does LA differ to London? “I’m currently in LA working on several projects including a Broadway play that’s going to be featuring my music. It’s very exciting. I’m also looking at new film projects. I worked on three feature films last year and really enjoy acting. I’m also writing new music and will be playing at Coachella, as well as touring several cities throughout America in the coming months. “I recorded Girl Talk in LA and really enjoy it. I have lots of good friends here,

which makes it a great hub for touring the US. So much sunshine is nice too.” Is there one artist that Kate would like to perform with? “I would love to perform with Patti Smith or Courtney Love!” As a big supporter of gay rights, what is her opinion of the current Russian attitude towards gay and lesbians? “It’s sad and ridiculous. A person should be able to be themselves, full stop. I like to think that my music is empowering. It can be hard for kids coming out and I think that’s why they like my music. It celebrates being the outsider. I get a lot of kids from all different backgrounds going through different things and they’re always really open with me. I like to look after my fans and they look after me. It’s a really sweet relationship.” With such a busy schedule, how does Kate unwind? “I love spending time with family, friends and my bunny, Fluffy.” Visit www.katenash.co.uk

FASHION

With a distinctively edgy, rock-chic personality MaisonDuPosh is not for the faint-hearted. Kirsty Edwards-Harris chats to the free-spirited designer, with a sharp inspiring sense of fashion, Sam Sky, the man behind the expressively, eclectic creations. Prepare to be seduced…

D

escribed as “luxury with an attitude” MaisonDuPosh appeals to the woman who commands individuality, expression and distinction, a woman who walks on the edge and refuses to be ignored. The MaisonDuPosh handbags can be seen as exotic, statement jewellery pieces complementing a woman’s attire. MaisonDuPosh marries a rock-chic aesthetic with “jewellery-like” fastenings and adornments, thereby giving the brand an instantly recognisable style. Exotic skins, butter soft exquisite leather, jewelled bespoke hardware and statement colours are all part of the MaisonDuPosh experience. Why fashion? It’s a subtle yet powerful means of communication! Fashion for me is not about what’s “in” and what’s “out” but more about the person. It is about how you feel, what mood you’re in, what character you possess. A lot can be sensed and said in the language of fashion. It’s a visual and flaunting language and I get the opportunity to create a set of vocabulary every season. It’s quite an adrenaline rush! Describe your free-spirited nature... It’s my ability and character to maintain an open-

minded and happy demeanour about life and myself in general. I have a very strong belief in people and the beauty of existence. I am a human magnet for the smallest positive charge in any situation and because of this there are not many things that can get me down. My basic rule is, ‘Don’t harm anyone or anything’, apart from that, everything is possible and doable. How does spirituality influence your creations? Spirituality definitely affects my business practices and ethics quite a bit but as for design and creations, it’s more a free spirit influence that comes into play. They are connected but play separate roles. Some would say that spirituality and luxury are a juxtaposition – would you agree? It’s questions like this that make giving interviews exciting and enjoyable!! Questions that make you think and dig within!! I suppose my rhetorical question would be first to know what is the definition of spirituality and luxury to you? I would imagine that this might differ from person to person. For me, spirituality can loosely be described as the search to know our real self as unique individuals, while realising the connections we share and the effect we have to everything around us. And as for luxury, in the materialistic sense of the word, it is purely, craftsmanship and the ability to appreciate and possess it. Awareness of spirituality and appreciation of luxury should not cannibalise each other. If luxury comes at a cost to the environment or the human race, then it ceases to be luxury and should not be seen as such. In my opinion spirituality and luxury can exist together and in fact could support each other. OHLALA!

How has your work with fashion houses such as Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga inspired your own label? I had the luck and the gift of working and establishing a mindset with some of the most renowned names in fashion. However, my design esthetic is mostly self-taught, therefore in a sense is fresh and different. There are many truly amazing things learnt in the manners of craftsmanship but also some things that I wish to do differently as well. These are such things as creating designs and an aura rather than logos, and adopting an honest price policy. What is your signature piece? It’s not yet created. I doubt that I will ever create a ‘signature piece’. It would somehow to me define the end of a creative journey. When 68

Style notes The new SS 2014 collection unleashes a wild, illusive and very seductive creature into the world of MaisonDuPosh! The Black Panther is an incredibly powerful, fearless and sinuous animal that truly symbolises the very nature of this collection. The clutches, totes and hobo styles feature panther-shaped finger rings, twists and push lock hardware “jewellery” in gold or gunmetal. The summer comes with striking electric colours such as turquoise, fuchsia and tangerine, exclusive materials of buttersoft leather and python as well as great attention to striking details.

a piece is realised from conception to reality, it’s an overwhelming feeling that I can’t possibly put into words but there’s an equally powerful realisation of betterment and “what the next level can be.” I am my own worst critic, so it would be difficult to give something a ‘signature piece’ status at this moment. And in a twisted masochistic manner, I hope I never have to. What type of woman wears MaisonDuPosh? Every woman who is or wants to be selfconfident with an attitude that is intimidatingly attractive. The woman is someone who will make an entrance but doesn’t need to scream for attention. She knows her self-worth and maintains her health and mind, as well as possessing a flamboyant and expressive personality... A DuPosh would complement her perfectly! www.ohlala-magazine.com

Describe your creative vision for SpringSummer 2014... Fierce, electric and calm stealth is the emotion I wanted my SS14 collection to portray!! What makes your brand unique? ‘Unique’ can be a very arrogant word to use in the talented and creative world we live in. However, I would say, as a brand I want to create an ambiance and an emotion with my customer and anyone involved with the brand. It’s not so much about the colour of the season, or the “it’ shape, but more about how the person feels when they carry our creations. This is the perception with which we approach anything and everything we do. I don’t know if that is ‘unique’ but it’s the way we roll!!! Who is your fashion icon? Oh wow!!! So many!! I admire and appreciate the input of so many people in this industry. A few that come immediately to mind are... Rei Kawakubo, Azzedine Alaïa, Tom Ford, Jane Birkin, Madonna, Daphne Guinness, tribes and cultures, and the most vibrant and influential… NATURE! What celebrity would you most like to give a makeover in the MaisonDuPosh style? Hahaha... This is one of those moments where my angels and demons fight each-other. My angels say, “No-one needs a fashion and look makeover, if they feel good about how they look, that’s more important!” My demons scream... “Hell no!! ... You need a different approach girl.” … So I’ll give them both their say... At this moment my demons would like a crack at Miley Cyrus! “Beautiful woman! Beautiful Voice! Pure Spa manager, Sana Ahmed, shares a few tips to keep your skin healthy 1. Protect your skin from the sun Use sunscreen with an SPA of at least 15. Stay in shade between 10am and 4pm when the sun’s rays are strongest. Wear protective clothing. 2. Treat your skin gently. Limit bath time as long showers and baths remove natural oils from your skin. Avoid using strong soaps, instead opt for mild cleansers. After bathing don’t rub yourself with the towel, instead pat dry so that some moisture remains on the skin. Moisturise skin daily.

Tips from Spa director, Kathy Sim 1. How often one has a massage depends on their individual condition and lifestyle of that person. You can have a massage as often as once a week or once a month. I call this the ‘lazy man’s exercise’ – simply because another person is doing the work for you. But massage is important because it releases lactic acid from the body. Massage is especially good for women, as they tend to store more fat. Massage breaks down the cellulite. In a way it is a more holistic way of losing weight – especially when combined with a good diet and regular exercise. 2. For office workers who spend a lot of time glued to their desks and computers, it’s important to get rid of the static electricity that you get from electronics and other equipments or machines. Throw your hair forewards and let it loose to let air in and take out all that stored static energy. Then gently pull your hair from the scalp. A relaxing scalp massage does wonders to relieve some of your stress.

The Royal Spa director Kathy Sim has created a customised series of treatments – the ‘La’ Series consisting of Massages, Scrubs and Facials – all designed to address individual guests’ treatment needs and desires. Three new ‘La’ Series treatments have been introduced: La Massage – an exquisite and heavenly experience used with various massage techniques customised to relax tense muscles and soothe your body and soul, La Scrub – a special formulation prepared for your specific needs to help nourish your skin; and La Facial – personalised solutions that use natural ingredients for anti-ageing, deep cleansing, or hydrating treatments, suitable for all skin types and conditions. The Country Club manager, Lullu Murali has some important fitness tips to share 1. Try to keep it simple and work on the basics. Build a simple basic foundation and eliminate the chances of getting injured. Work on your mobility, flexibility and core strength and the rest will follow. With a busy lifestyle, you can start with two sessions per week. The key is to draw a plan and stick with it, so you can work on the three D’s: Discipline, Determination and Dedication work outs. You can increase your number of workout sessions depending on your goal and level of commitment you have. Make small realistic goals. 2. Every exercise plan is designed to meet your unique needs. I usually do a full body assessment that helps me find their mobility, flexibility, core strength, stamina and basic functionality levels. After that, a programme is designed to work on the lagging areas with that person’s goal in mind, for example, fat loss, muscle toning etc. 3. When it comes to food, it all depends on the individual’s goal. The most important thing is to create a skeleton plan for the whole day or a week. Write down the number of meals and snacks you will have, and also plan your water intake. It’s important that you write down small details of your plan as well as the big ones.

NEW JAGUAR XF

A Seriously Stylish & Sporty Saloon Words by Josephine Marshall, Images by Shobin Joseph

J

aguar was first founded in 1922 and has been making luxurious cars ever since. This month I was lucky enough to be able to test-drive the latest evolution of the Jaguar XF. It is a sporty, luxury sedan that rings true to Jaguar’s historic motto of “Grace, Space and Pace”, all of which are in abundance in this new 2014 release, which I believe is one of the classiest looking mid-sized vehicles in the market today. 94

OHLALA!

www.ohlala-magazine.com

diva drives Renowned British car designer, Ian Callum is the man behind the XF’s graceful swooping lines and has managed to successfully combine a very contemporary and sporty appearance without losing the traditional hallmark Jaguar looks for which the brand has become renowned. There is the large quintessentially British radiator mesh grill nestled between exotic HID headlamps with crystal white DLR’s in the shape of a Jaguar ‘J’. The roof slopes down to a feline-esque tail, creating an athletic ‘ready for action’ pose and an impression of speed even when the car is at a standstill. Superb attention to design detail progresses to the interior. The model I drove has lush soft leather throughout with elegant timber highlights, which harks back to the luxury Jaguars of the past. The three-spoked leather wrapped steering wheel adjusts automatically to the driver for comfortable reach from the stylishly-shaped seats. The dash and centre console are the definition of streamlined simplicity. Starting up the car is a lovely experience. At the push of a button the rotary gear selector rises to meet your palm and the air vents rotate and appear as if by magic. Dominated by a generously sized touch screen monitor, the centre console controls the navigation, phone, climate and audio controls, with a 380-Watt Meridian sound system that I found plays without distortion at levels louder than humanly necessary – you can have lots of fun!

“The Jaguar XF really is a standout vehicle of style and modern elegance.”

Spacewise, the front cabin is very comfortable with plenty of leg and head room for the driver and passenger. There is ample room in the back seat, and the rear boot at 17.1 cubic feet is very generous and can be increased to 32.5 cubic feet, with a split folding rear seat making it a great getaway car for a couple. Under the bonnet, the XF boasts a four-cylinder supercharged V6 engine, which is smooth, quiet, yet powerful and works well with the eight speed auto. There are paddle shifts on the wheel for drivers who wish to enjoy manual control and when that turbo kicks in, you’ll be left in little doubt that the manufacturers claims that it can do zero to 100-kilometres-per-hour in 7.9-seconds was easily achievable. With the large 18-inch alloy wheels I was expecting a fairly firm and sporty ride, but what was surprising was how well the car handled and ironed out bumps in the road, creating a very smooth refined drive throughout. www.ohlala-magazine.com

In spite of staying true to Jaguar’s heritage, this is undeniably a very modern car, with top-of-the line safety features and technology used to enhance the driving experience at every turn. The car is, for example, equipped with satellite navigation as standard that includes the dynamic zoom feature, which will zero in on intersections and back out again making turns clearer and safer. The vehicle also includes six airbags, rear parking sensors, rear view camera, blind spot warning, cornering brake control, automatic headlight dimming and front parking censors making safety a priority. For a luxurious touch, rain sensing windscreen wipers, semi adjustable power front seats and automatic wing mirror retraction are also featured. Overall, this is one fine, sporty sedan that has grace, refinement, performance and reliability all wrapped up in an extremely beautiful package. Along with a very competitive price, the Jaguar XF really is a standout vehicle of style and modern elegance.

ast month we celebrated ten years of the Bahrain International Circuit, with one of the most exciting races the F1 has seen in quite some time. The race was action packed and played out beautifully under the floodlit track. The main highlight of the race was the enthralling epic battle between Mercedes drivers Rosberg and Hamilton, who grippingly scrapped for the lead all race long, with Lewis Hamilton eventually emerging victorious, and team mate Nico Rosberg taking in second place followed by Sergio Perez taking the third spot on the podium. Whilst Jenson Button may not have won this year’s Bahrain Grand Prix, he did arrive in luxury, driving himself in style in an iconic Rolls Royce. “I am absolutely delighted to be accompanied by the very best in British luxury. I especially look forward to driving Wraith, a fantastic addition to the Rolls-Royce fleet.” Richard Carter, director of Global Communications, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, commented, “We feel privileged to provide a British icon with the consummate British car, as he travels the world during the 2014 Grand Prix season. Jenson Button’s commitment to success echoes RollsRoyce’s constant pursuit of perfection.” Bahrain has also recently seen the release of BMW’s all new 2 Series Coupe. Replacing the BMW 1 Series Coupé, the nifty new coupé will offer customers BMW’s signature driving experience. Paul Yates, general manager of Euro Motors, said: “As the BMW brand continues to grow in the Kingdom we are committed to bringing vehicles to market that match our customers’ appetite for premium automobiles. HOROSCOPES

Happy Birthday Ms Taurus

Giovanni reveals your destiny …

Taurus

For many Taureans this month, you’ll find recent work struggles are finally put behind you and you can get down to doing what you do best without any more interruptions. This will raise your spirits, improve your life outside of the office and also drop a few extra pennies into your savings account. But there could be a few darker clouds on the horizon when it comes to relationships and you may have to deal with some very uncomfortable “home truths” before you can finally put an emotional issue behind you for good.

Famous Taureans George Clooney David Beckham Robert Pattinson Jessica Alba Megan Fox Penelope Cruz Cate Blanchett Pierce Brosnan James McAvoy Al Pacino Jack Nicholson

Taurus-At-A-Glance

Taurus, above all signs, has immense perseverance even when other signs may have given up. Solid and persistent, just like the bull, Taurus is well known for being stubborn and they can often conflict with other strong characters. They are also not too fond of change, feeling much more at home in a familiar and routine way of life. Taurus is also a relatively easygoing sign and not one to pick a fight but if they are provoked, their temper is fierce and unrelenting. On the negative side they can be lazy and secretive and their dogmatic approach to life is not to everyone’s taste.

Gemini

Your sign can sometimes appear thoughtless when it comes to your own ambitions – this isn’t through any meanness or malicious streak but simply because you tend to become so focused on what you want to achieve that you lose sight of everything else around you. The problem is that this behaviour can often leave those you love feeling isolated and alone. Try to put some thought into changing this or you risk losing something very precious in the long term. You won’t believe how much better you will make people feel and you might even notice some benefits in yourself as well!

Cancer

After a fairly difficult time in a relationship – where many crossed words and countless arguments have hindered your progress as a couple – the world opens up for you with the chance to put things right this month. Too many people have sought to interfere with your partnership or marriage and only now, as you both decide enough is enough, are you able to see that the actions of jealous people has been the only real problem in your life. It will feel like you and a loved one have suddenly fallen in love all over again and for a time everything is going to feel like it is brand new. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Leo

This month you will you find yourself drawn closer and closer to a work colleague for whom you share an intimate affection but feelings could threaten to impact upon other areas and relationships in your life. It seems that no matter how hard you try to ignore it, you cannot dismiss your heart and this issue will end up tearing you apart if you don’t address it soon. Ultimately, it’s all about what you want. Inside you know how to best resolve everything but much depends on how honest you can be with yourself.

Virgo

You are about to face the real possibility of taking on a new fight that is going to test your resolve and could last for many months – possibly beyond the summer and into the winter. Above all else, you should only consider engaging in what will inevitably become a legal battle if you have the stamina and more importantly the belief in the cause. Enter into this half-heartedly and you will end up regretting it later on. Nothing but total commitment is required and if you adopt this attitude then you will be certain to come out on top at the end.

Libra

Just like old habits, long-term friendships – no matter what distance or time exists between them – never die and this month you are about to hear from a childhood companion that will reinforce this belief. A person is about to walk back into your life and impact it in a very serious way. Although there is an element of mystery to their return, one thing is certain: he or she has come back looking for some help and you might be the only person who can get them through what is a very sticky situation. It won’t pass by unappreciated and you’re likely to realise you mean more to them than you realised.

Scorpio

If there’s anything about your sign that really annoys the hell out of those close to you it’s your obsession with detail. For some it can really grate after a while. Well, this month will see you coming to blows with a female Taurean after your critical remarks sting more than you anticipated. The resulting disagreement will not make for pretty viewing and once the dust has settled, you may find yourself with one less friend because of the fallout. If there is any lesson to be learned from the experience it’s that you need to be a little more diplomatic and sensitive to the feelings of those around you.

Sagittarius

There are few incidents that really faze a Sagittarian. However, if there is one thing that tends to get them all emotional or uptight it’s being kept out of the loop when it comes to their social life. If there’s a party, they’re normally the first in line to let their hair down and boogie on the dance floor. So, when you hear of a friend’s major “bash” you don’t appear to have been invited to you’re not likely to take it in a very dignified fashion. Before you explode, just check under the sofa or behind that wonky drawer in the kitchen.

Capricorn

You’re not at your best at the moment. There could be a multitude of reasons for this but the one standout explanation has more to do with the manipulation of others rather than any failing on your part. Don’t allow your emotions to get the better of you when it comes to a troubled relationship that has somehow lost its rhythm. Rather than fuss and worry about what you might be doing wrong, give yourself a little credit and start to analyse where your partner might be lacking. It doesn’t have to be your fault all the time.

Aquarius

Be careful not to start taking a person’s good nature for granted because they are likely to turn without a moment’s hesitation if they feel all their efforts are being expected rather than appreciated. Whilst you may have your own opinions on the matter, you can’t force them onto the person concerned. If they don’t agree with you then you just have to live with that. Curb any bull-headedness in favour of a more diplomatic approach.

Pisces

After a troubled April, there will be normality for many of you in May and you can look forward to a more balanced month. Work will be high on the agenda and a new vacancy that opens in your current company could prove to be just the incentive you need to move yourself out of a career rut. It may end up being just you and another ambitious colleague who fight it out for the position but if you play to your strengths you will hold the upper hand. Don’t allow yourself to be intimidated and you are sure to come out on top.

Aries

You may have been feeling under a great deal of strain over the last few months and much of this related to problems that weren’t even of your own making. However, the good news is that May heralds a new dawn for you and it will see you being better placed to enjoy the world around you. Realise that you have a lot of positives in your life but sometimes small issues can grow out of proportion and mask the good things. This month you will rise above the clouds and see things in a much clearer and illuminating fashion. OHLALA! 121

inding a big green tree with succulent leaves and a trunk to wrap your arms around is not an easy task when you are on an island in the Gulf. So let’s go have a coffee at a cafe and contemplate my addictions to coffee, shopping, mmmm chocolate, being lazy, procrastinating, TV series and my Cosmo. (I know not very philosophical,) and here comes the bad one, smoking. OMG yes little Sophie smokes, but just on special occasions. But only when I am stressed and when I am in a good mood, so basically all the time. With coffee break and shopping intervals in between, because nothing beats shopping, But then I noticed, when I shop, or eat chocolate, I have no urge to indulge my other addictions, and visa versa, come to think of it, that is interesting don’t you think. Addictions are not afflictions they are just pleasure-oriented desires that we follow much the same as having a strong appetite. Afflictions cause pain much the same as if you do not drink water, so is water an addiction or do we sometimes have a strong desire to drink water, or eat chocolate, or have a cigarette to relax? I decided I would remove the word addiction from my thought process and just enjoy the things I feel like when I feel like them and not overdo it because I don’t do that with other things I like either, like water, or cashew nuts and tangerines. So why overdo my pleasures, when I can enjoy them and not feel stressed. Probably the label addiction does more emotional harm than indulging on the pleasure itself. But what about stress? Think about it in the latter context, stress too is a pleasure-orientated desire – use it wisely.

“Addictions are not afflictions that cause us pain or harm.”
