Time flies when you’re having fun, or in my case getting married! Not only has my surname changed, but, there’s a notable new fashion season that’s already made itself well known, as codes of couture filtered through to the ready-to-wear collections this AW19 season. Plumes of feathers dominated the catwalks, with everything from beautifully created couture-like gowns, with elegant tufts of feathers, to outwear fringed with feathers. There was a notable split in how designers presented their autumn/winter 2019 collections this season. Traditional haute couture influences infiltrated many collections in New York and London, with exaggerated volume, couture dresses and stunning tailoring coming to the fore. Elsewhere, however, there seemed to be a shift towards more commercial, ‘shoppable’ presentations. Many designers seemed to place more emphasis on wearability this season, with covetable, catwalk-to-pavement looks reigning supreme. This wasn’t to say the AW19 collections were mundane but creativity was harnessed in a way which appealed to the many not the few. In other news, my basic inner self is pondering the question, “Where’s my Pumpkin Spiced Latte..?” Stay fashionable. Stay fabulous!

BEAUTY Column WEAR SPF DAILY Sunscreen is your best defense against aging and sun protection is so important, especially in the harsh climate of The Middle East. Sunscreen should be part of your morning routine as much as brushing your teeth. Foundations that include a SPF over 30+ are perfect to protect your face and often give you nice glow. DRINKS LOTS OF WATER Skincare and health truly go hand in hand. Staying hydrated keeps skin firm and glowing. If you’re struggling to get down enough water each day, consider making it a habit to drink a glass before each meal or sit a large water bottle on your desk and sip it through the day.

We’ve all been guilty of not taking off our makeup before bed or doing a bad job of removing it but it wreaks havoc on your skin and clogs your pores. It’s so important to give your skin a thorough clean and to spend at least ten minutes a night on a routine that includes cleanser, toner, eye cream a good serum and night cream. Even if you are super lazy, try leaving face wipes beside your bed so that you can ensure to take your make-up off.

DON’T OVERUSE PRODUCT With so many products to choose from these days it can be super overwhelming when choosing the right products. In terms of skincare, it’s always best to get back to basics and use products that work hard for you. Use a good cleanser that will clean your skin without stripping moisture, a serum that works for your skin type and moisturisers that address your skin’s needs (dryness, anti-ageing, oiliness etc).

KEEP IT CLEAN Unwashed make-up brushes are a breeding ground for bacteria that can cause nasty breakouts on your skin. It seems like such a simple thing but finding the time to clean your brushes can be hard. Clean brushes are also much more precise when applying product and you don’t want to mix your light eyeshadows with your dark eyeshadows.

THE LAVENDER DESERT DREAM Ready to awaken the senses and de-stress the mind and body? We certainly were as we opted to indulge at HEAVENLY SPA BY WESTIN.

ituated snuggly upstairs from the hustle and bustle of City Centre Bahrain, Heavenly Spa by Westin offers a diverse treatment menu to cater for all of your relaxation needs, which we were in desperate need of. Upon arrival at the spa, we were immediately impressed by the design of the building. This coupled with the kind, welcoming staff made us sure that we had picked the right place to unwind as Newlyweds. After a quick yet comprehensive consultation, our masseuse advised us to opt for ‘The Lavender Desert Dream’, one of four bespoke treatments allowing you to unwind and relax; Facial, Turkish Bath, Massage and Body Scrub. We both decided on the ‘Butterfly Effect’ massage for an hours treatment using lavender calming oil. This treatment is particularly popular to promote general wellbeing, which is exactly what we were after. My husband was shown to the male changing rooms and assigned a locker to store his valuables as I mirrored the same level of care in the female changing area. After being given time to change into a fluffy robe and ‘take off the day’ my masseuse kindly asked if I would like to to experience the complimentary facilities such as their jacuzzi, steam room and sauna as this would help to relax me before my treatment. Not one to ignore such a proposal, I jumped at the chance and spent 20 minutes lazing around. This was the perfect recipe to help me unwind before the 60 minute massage that awaited me. 52

HEALTH Files My masseuse collected me from the jacuzzi and I was escorted to the serene couple’s treatment room via the tranquil relaxation zone and hallway. Upon entering, I couldn’t help but smile at there pretty setup before me. Heavenly Spa treatment rooms are truly something of beguiling magic as they cannot help but make you feel instantly relaxed. My husband was already laying down ready to start the massage. We were asked if we wanted to have music playing in the room or silence, a lovely touch to help tailor to the client’s needs. With gentle melodies in the air, my therapist proceeded to bathe my feet with a hot towel. I was so relaxed at this point that I was nervous about falling asleep as my therapist started to conduct the treatment. Thankfully I didn’t and I was able to experience a truly amazing experience. The massage itself combined Eastern and Western techniques to stimulate circulation and deeply relax muscles. Every minute was done to perfection, focusing on my targeted areas with medium pressure that allowed my knots to surrender. There was a series of strokes and feathering to invigorate and energise my body as the

perfectly designed movements aided for a truly luxurious massage. As the treatment drew to a close, ending with a mini head massage, there was a sense of realism that swept over me that I’d be forced to delve back into reality. However hard it was to leave the room upon completion, the senses were uplifted from start-to-finish that it was as if time stood still as every inch of my body was treated to the focus that it truly deserved. I was guided to the relaxation area in somewhat of a blissful haze where you are met by soothing sounds and muted lighting. Ergonomically designed loungers which hug the contours of the body and abundant supplies of detox water are available throughout your visit in the relaxation area, but, I was secretly delighted when I was served hot ginger tea with homemade biscuits - yum! he sense of grandeur as you walk through the main entrance of Jumeirah Royal Saray is nothing short of magical. The public areas within the hotel are elegant and ornate. Marble floors with tessellated Arabic patterns and archways complete with white fretwork lead guests from one beautiful space to another. The choice of fabrics, textures and injections of colour throughout take the hotel interior to new levels of luxuriance. Ochres, greys and marine blues are used to great effect. The methods of illuminating spaces are by far the most outstanding element of the décor within the Jumeirah Royal Saray. Chandeliers on a grand scale created from varying sized droplets of glass reflecting light in a mesmerising fashion and beyond this layers of light descending from the ceiling like a glowing wasps’ nest. And, this is just your first impression as you enter after making use of their complimentary valet parking. The Brasserie Royale was our dinner destination and is the most brilliantly unique example of sophisticated classic elegance and contemporary design. Whites, greys and wickerwork blend Arabian elegance and colonial chic. Colour is injected in the form of yellow chairs and scattered minimalistic foliage. The luxuriant table settings sit below an irregular glass prism suspended from the ceiling providing what can only be described as a sense of curiosity. The Jumeirah Royal Saray Bahrain, designed by world-class architect Floris Smith, sits resplendently next to its very own private beach and marina in one of Manama’s most vibrant locations, Al Seef district, so an incredible view is a total given. The hotel’s décor and architectural features draw inspiration from the homes of Arabian Royalty and luxury from around the globe. The Khalifa Heritage House proved to be a massive influence throughout and is incorporated in many elements including the wood carvings, mirrors and flooring. The menu blended the best of Mediterranean indulgence and clean eating. Starters include a mouthwatering selection including Deep Fried Buffalo Mozzarella Salad and, my favourite, Grilled Prawns with Mediterranean Salad which is perfectly executed amidst Squid Ink Sauce that balanced the dish perfectly. As my husband and I moved on to our entrées, we couldn’t help but marvel over the freshly vibrant ingredients that are reminiscent of European shores. Executive Chef Claudio Dieli ensures that all of his pasta is freshly cooked in

an exclusive dough made up of 40 egg yolks, and, after tasting their Home-made Ricotta and Spinach Ravioli as well as his Home-Made Pappardelle Pasta served ‘ Sicilian Style’ there is no doubt in my mind that this is a man who knows how to cook! Having worked around the World from Italy, London, Dubai, Amman, Cairo, Hong Kong and China Chef Claudio brings his vast global expertise of over 24 years culinary gastronomy to our beautiful Kingdom of Bahrain. Here’s another dish perfectly evocative of an Italian summer: Seared Sea Bream Fillet, the Sicilian speciality. There is something to tempt the whole family, being it the pizza for children and adults alike or indeed one of the vast items from the Chef ’s Selection, something, or rather, everything will certainly hit the spot and provide the perfect backdrop to any occasion. Of course, one’s sweet tooth needs to be catered for and catered-for it was with offerings of both Signature Pastries and Seasonal Treats ranging from the aptly named Velvet Sphere, Exotic Pave and Black Forest Stone. I feel it would be unfair but totally necessary for me to divulge that alongside this the restaurant offers Eclairs, Mille-feuille and a series of signature tarts. Although one must admonish you to try their ‘nice cream’ that balanced the culinary feast beautifully. Sensational.

Upon finding out that the iconic brand has just introduced a new generation of models, including the 2019 Porsche 718 Boxster, we were extremely eager to organise a test drive to find out what they have managed to achieve with their latest offering. Fortunately, Porsche Centre Bahrain was on hand to grant us this wish and the result was an unforgettable sports car experience. The sculptural form of this new Boxster’s wider and more masculine front end ensures it is instantly recognisable as the latest model on the market. The narrow front lights located above the lateral air intakes accentuate these strong features, giving this 2019 model a commanding presence. Two horizontal fins located at the middle of the front end visually emphasis this car’s width, whilst the much larger cooling inlets

strongly hint at the vehicle’s new turbo engine capabilities. The freshly designed wings and side sills of the Boxster’s flanks once again distinguish it from previous models, whilst the 19-inch wheels add to the vehicle’s sporty nature. With the rear wheels measuring an extra half inch in width than those of its predecessors, the lateral dynamics of the car have been noticeably improved. The rear body of the 718 has also undergone a restyling process that has resulted in a more powerful appearance. The accent strip with integrated Porsche badge between the tail lights is a major feature contributing towards this upgraded look. The design of the rear is now sharper and shapelier than any previous Boxster and we battled to find any feature that we felt could use obvious improvement. Overall, the designers at Porsche have managed to accomplish something rather remarkable with this brand new 718. The familiar two seat interior environment of the 718 Boxster is what greeted us as we entered the vehicle, albeit upgraded with new elements. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Porsche has somehow managed to improve the appeal of the interior with an even greater level of sophistication than ever before. The impressive leather trim complete with uninterrupted stitching extends all the way to the storage compartment and looks magnificent. In fact, all of the accents, trimmings and materials used throughout the vehicle are of the very highest quality as one would expect from a Porsche. The 375 mm diameter sport steering wheel is reminiscent of the 918 Spyder and felt fantastic in hand. The option of five new interior colours allows for one to customise their vehicle to better express their taste and personality. A principal element of this new interior layout is Porsche Communication Management (PCM) complete with mobile phone preparation, audio interfaces and the Sound Package Plus with 110 watts of audio power. Various extensions to this easy-touse system are on offer that allow one to customise and improve on its performance and capabilities. Available as an alternative is a navigation module with voice control, improved map display and free map updates within the first three years. The Connect Plus module is offered as an extension to the navigation module and enables simple interfacing of a smartphone to the PCM and the use of online functions such as navigation information services, wireless Internet access for Wi-Fi devices and an LTE telephone module. All-in-all, a very impressive and user-friendly setup indeed. The most exciting part of our latest Boxster experience however began when we engaged the ignition. The roar from the newly developed, four-cylinder flat engine with turbo charging was music to our ears and we could not help but smile at the sounds emanating from under the hood, promising us an extraordinary experience. Once out on the road, we could immediately feel the 220 kW of power on offer from the two-litre engine that boasts 380 Nm of torque. This abundance of power allowed us to surge from 0 – 100km/h in around 4.7 seconds! The Boxster 718 has a top speed of 275 km/h, which is far more than anyone would need outside of a racetrack. Along with these improvements in speed, fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 13 percent, whilst the completely new chassis tuning and stronger breaks help one to be in complete control of the vehicle at all times. All too soon we found ourselves back at the Porsche Centre Bahrain showroom. It is never easy handing back the key fob of a truly great sports car, but we took some comfort in that we get to keep the memories of this outstanding experience. www.ohlala-magazine.com

The average woman spends 11 minutes a day putting on makeup. And there are reasons why you shouldn’t feel guilty for a single second of that. Our society has a long history with makeup. In fact, evidence of cosmetics dates back to 10,000 B.C. in ancient Egypt. Both men and women used ointments to clean the skin and cover up body odours. Kohl, a ground black mineral, was used to line the eyes to decrease sun glare and reduce the risk of eye infection (believed to be true at the time). Soon after, coloured clays and dyes began to rouge lips and stain nails. And we never stopped. So if “doing you” involves getting all dolled up with a dozens of different products every day, cheers to you! It can boost your confidence. You know the phrase “fake it till you make it”? Cosmetics can help you sell that. It can help you connect with other women. In other words, admitting “I use concealer too” can create a kind of cosmetic camaraderie among women — and maybe help you finally find your favourite foundation along the way. It can prepare you for “battle.” Just like we have certain clothes for working out and certain ones for going out, the idea of “putting on our face” with makeup can help prepare our mental mindset for whatever “battle” we are heading into. It can keep your skin protected. Makeup helps you to protect your skin and keep it safe from pollution, smog etc that harm your skin. Makeup creates a slight barrier around your skin to keep it from being directly exposed to dust. While makeup is not going to offer total protection, the risk of being harmed will at least remain minimal. It’s fun. Makeup isn’t all business, though. It also can be downright fun to create a brand-new look with a few simple pencils and palettes. It’s designated “you” time. We know you’re busy. But whether your morning makeup routine takes you four minutes or 40, that time is time you are spending on yourself — even if there are kids or furry animals vying for your attention every 30 seconds.

FRESH START MISS OHLALA DELVES INTO THE WORLD OF MAKEUP AND SOCIETY’S ONGOING AFFLICTION WITH IT. We live in a generation that is obsessed with makeup. We see it all around us, especially on social media: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc. They are overflowing with makeup tutorials, pictures and videos showcasing amazing makeup skills. How is that affecting us? Lately, I see people criticising the makeup skills of others; they criticise people who like to wear bold makeup AND people who don’t wear any amount of makeup. Telling someone that they don’t look good without makeup can make people feel super insecure, but trying to stop a person from putting on makeup is also incredibly rude. I think it’s perfectly ok for people to never leave the house without it and for people to never wear any amount of it. Personally, I have a love/hate relationship with makeup. Ever since I was little, I liked everything about beauty and fashion. I love how it makes people feel beautiful and how you can use your creativity to come up with looks. 98
