EdItor’s Letter A
s the summer comes to a close (although it might not feel like it) we gear up for the fabulous flood of new fashion – but until then, we have the pre fall collections to enjoy, if for a brief moment. Our August issue looks at how to dress for those in-between season weeks – from monochrome moments to floral fantasies to bold strokes, our fashion pages give you all the key pieces to create said looks. We also pin point the essential details that make up pre fall fashion with a zoomed in focus on the designers who are leading the way and raising the style stakes. Of course our beauty pages follow suit too with a great selection of must-haves and must-tries – it’s all about experimenting until you find what’s right for you. While August might be a quiet month, we think exploring the region’s most luxurious hotel stays is the perfect excuse to GCC hop. We stayed at the majestic Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi and lived like Kings and Queens for a few days – we could definitely get used to it! But equally too, there are fabulous local escapes to be had right here in Qatar – namely The St. Regis Doha – Sofia Graniello had the rather unfortunate (!) task of staying at this most palatial property and had a true five-star experience. You are never short of five-star excellence in the Gulf; you have our permission to take advantage and live it up as unapologetically as you like! We are so excited for the next season, so until then, enjoy our issue and we hope you find inspiration that suits your sense of style.

First Word
august is here August is here, and so is my birthday. Another year, another wrinkle. Trying to stay on a positive note with so much aging, this month, I had a lovely staycation at The St. Regis Doha hotel over a glorious weekend. Having stayed at their luxurious premises, the prominent hotel does know how to pamper a gal, not to mention, there are so many fun activities on offer – so check that out in our Local Escapes. I also had the delicious task of dining at Prime restaurant at InterContinental Doha The City, one I am looking forward to going back to. But if you’re curious as to what went down, head over to our Culinary Insight section, for some delicious details. And as if that was all for our August whereabouts, Martyn Stewart, a chartered psychologist, weighs in on a term we all struggle with: Friendship; he puts new and old relationships into perspective. Keep your eyes peeled for other fashion and beauty trends and enjoy another edition of Ohlala.

Fight The Frizz
Beauty Column
Are your tresses suffering from the heat and humidity at this sweltering time of year? Angela Beitz finds out what you can do to help unruly locks
I
t’s about this time of year in the GCC when temperatures are at a ridiculous high, humidity has well and truly kicked in and is going nowhere anytime soon and your hair just won’t behave itself. It’s the same old problem. Summer hits and your hair either resembles a lank mop or a dry, frizzy mess that can’t be tamed. You try to get smooth locks with your hair straightener but it’s just so hot and not worth the tears and beads of sweat dripping down your face. While it is very normal for hair to frizz and to have a mind of its own in the summer due to humidity levels, it’s a frustrating issue. The water can also make hair look frizzy because it is hard and contains a high amount of chlorine. So, what to do? The tricks to combatting frizz starts with washing your hair and the products you use after. When washing your hair, use cool water instead of warm for your second wash. This will help to close the hair cuticle which in turn will decrease frizz because heat on hair opens the cuticle. It’s also really helpful if you use products that contain Keratin as they help the hair cuticle to sit flat to avoid frizzing. If you have fine hair, these products may leave your hair a bit flat so make sure you use some hair mousse or a volumising product to avoid limp hair and it’s also best to leave hair to dry naturally when you can. Once your hair is dried, apply a serum to your ends and to those areas with flyaway’s. Hair serums are such an underrated product as many people think they will leave the hair greasy. All you need is a really small amount, rub together in your palms and then distribute. Don’t overload your hair with products as it will end up oily. A great tip for taming the most unruly hair is to use an old make up brush and hairspray. Once you’ve styled your hair the way you want it, spritz a powder or bronzer size make up brush with hair spray and gently run it over your hair to tame the flyaway’s. This is an expert tip used by celebrity make up artists all over the world and it really works. There are plenty of de-frizzing treatments available at many hair salons, but be sure to find the right one. Some can be very costly and hard to maintain and the growing out process can be a nightmare and you really don’t want to damage your hair so make
“A great tip for taming the most unruly hair is to use an old make up brush and hairspray” sure you do your research as to what will suit your hair type and choose formaldehyde free treatments. One of the main causes of hair frizzing is dryness. To maintain great looking hair without the dryness a mask is essential to use at home and there are some great in salon ones also. Use a hair mask once or twice a week to tame frizz and leave your hair smooth and shiny and be sure to install a water filter in your shower to prevent hair loss and to give your locks the best possible treatment they deserve. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Regional Escapes “Our butler greets us in our room with a fresh juice and talks us through the room so that we know where everything is”
It’s not everyday you get you get to stay in a 7-star
hotel so you can imagine our excitement upon checking into Emirates Palace for a weekend. Our check-in was everything you would imagine from a hotel such as Emirates Palace where we were treated like royalty and given a cold refresher towel and a gorgeous bunch of apricot tea roses while our bags were whisked to our room. This hotel is seriously impressive if only for its sheer size and after we check in we are shown to our room and are given an explanation of the hotel’s offerings and the easiest ways to get around. The hotel is lavish and the traditional decor inside the hotel consists mostly of silver, gold, marble and glass mosaics. The chandeliers are made of Swarovski crystal and there are 114 domes (including the Grand Atrium which is higher than the dome of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome), 200 fountains, 1,000 hectares of landscaped parkland where 8,000 palms and other trees have been planted, a 1.3km-long beach,
72

a 6.4km jogging track, two swimming pools and underground parking for 2,500 cars. Emirates Palace doesn’t do things by halves. The eight-storey, kilometre-long mansion has a total of 850,000 square metres in floor space so we very happy to be shown the easiest ways to get the spa, beach and pool. We are checked into a Diamond Room Suite which faces the beach and has a beautiful large balcony. The room is filled with small vases of more apricot tea roses and they’ve even made us an incredibly special Ohlala magazine cover out of chocolate. Genius. The suite is large and very decadent with two large bathrooms and beautiful furnishings in neutral tones and with gold touches. There are 302 grand rooms in Coral, Pearl and Diamond categories split into the East and West wings so hotel guests can relax in total luxury including a 24-hour butler service. Our butler greets us in our room with a fresh juice and talks us through the room so that we know where everything is and lets us know to contact him at any time should we need anything. On our first night we are dining at Mezlai which is the restaurant’s Emirati restaurant. This unique restaurant offers delicious Emirati cuisine set in ambient Arab décor. Mezlai is an Arabic word meaning ‘the old lock of the door’. We choose the shrimp biryani which is beautifully cooked and elegantly presented. The staff are super friendly are take care very good care of us, this is the perfect restaurant to try some authentic Emirati food.

Regional Escapes After a 7-star star snooze in our King size bed, we are ready for an early morning swim in the East Wing pool before breakfast. The grounds of the hotel are really quite amazing with immaculate kept gardens and lots of shade from the many palm trees. The East Wing pool also has a swim up bar and Cascade Pool Resturant should you feel peckish. After a refreshing swim, we head to Le Vendôme for a sumptous breakfast. The venue offers elegant indoor seating as well as an outdoor terrace. The restaurant is located on lobby level of the palace with an extensive terrace overlooking the beach &and marina. The buffet is extensive including everything from pastries, fruit, yoghurts, Arabic mezze, traditional hot breakfast options and eggs made to order along with lots of tea and coffee opotions plus fresh juices. After breakfast we take one of the palace bikes over the West wing to visit the Emirates Palace Spa. Featuring a blend of Moroccan-inspired interiors, domes and graceful archways interlaced with delicate furnishings and spa fittings, Emirates spa is a must visit. The spa offers an array of treatments from their fabulous hammam to high-tech facials but today we are trying their new CoolShaping slimming system. We slip into a robe and our therapist measures our problem areas such as thighs, arms and stomach as the treatment is designed to be done over a course of eight treatments. The treatment is aimed at those who need a little more support achieving weight loss ambitions the introduction of the ground-breaking CoolShaping slimming system to permanently destroy fat cells and sculpt your body, as well as the revolutionary 3-MAX, a clinically proven solution for cellulite reduction, connective tissue regeneration and fat metabolism. The treatment uses radio frequency and vacuum technology for the best non-invasive cellulite reduction and body sculpting results, with CoolShaping which eliminates stubborn fat cells to compliment the body’s natural contour. Our skin feels smooth and tones after one treatment which we are very impressed with. After our treatment we head back to our suite for a soak in the huge Jacuzzi tub before dinner at Sayad. Sayad is one of the many award-winning restaurants in the hotel that focuses on seafood dishes. Sayad is the Arabic for ‘fisherman’ so you can expect delicious seafood options a few other choices such as lamb or chicken dishes. We start off with a tasty tuna and avocado salad and scallops with blue cheese and pesto. Both dishes are delicious and beautifully presented. For mains we opt for the grilled tiger prawns with a chilli and garlic butter and grilled red snapper with a side of carrots and pistachios. Sayad is a lovely venue for an intimate dinner with excellent service and it was the highlight meal of our stay. We can’t speak highly enough of our experience at Emirates Palace and it’s absolutely well worth staying at this incredible property. The staff are super professional, the surroundings are stunning, rooms are decadent and there is a plethora of dining options. Do yourself a favour and book a stay. “The actual fight should not be between genders, but between a positive lifestyle and negative ideologies that try to steal the minds of our future generations” Give us an insight of your journey to empowerment?
At 27 I decided to leave a flourishing business to start creating ‘myself ’ and searching for a greater purpose in my professional life. I decided to become a photographer. After several paid missions for the United Nations and three published books, I realised that with passion and determination we could make it to our goals. Travelling and learning about cultures was an important part of my learning process, it brought me to a stage of tolerance and understanding that cultural diversity is a richness to this world. It brought me to creating Mayshad in 2011, with a purpose to serve these values of freedom and positivism. I’ve reached out to an international women’s community as a motivator throughout the Mayshad woman mag and club. How did women empowerment come into your life? As I created my way to build my inner self, far from social boundaries and happily balancing between the different aspects of my life as a mother, entrepreneur, and artist; I realised that a lot of women in the world could benefit from my own experiences, but also from each other’s life stories in order to lead an empowered lifestyle. What is it about empowering women that makes you so passionate? When I see how much inspiration a positive impact may have on people’s life, it stimulates my passion to share and transmit the winning attitude that leads all of us to a happier self. We as human beings also have the power to contribute to a better world, but it starts with finding the courage to create a better self. This makes me believe that we all come to life with a mission and a reason of being in this world. What are your views of women in today’s society? Since the 1950s, women have been on a constant road of transitioning: going from households to women with careers to having a strong presence in the civil society. 50 years ago, a woman had to choose between a career and motherhood in order to be competitive in the workforce. Today,
women have learned to handle at the same time an intense professional, social, and personal life. What is your philosophy on all this? Women had to fight to be respected in the working industry. I personally think that they are winning this fight. I think that now we should move to a new era where men and women help each other to create a more peaceful world. The actual fight should not be between genders, but between a positive lifestyle and negative ideologies that try to steal the minds of our future generations. Mayshad Lifestyle Concept is all about supporting women in this process. Who empowers you? Every day, I am very grateful to life. I tell people who complain about not meeting interesting people in their lives: “When you choose to put yourself in a path that enriches you, you will meet a lot of people that share the same interests as you.” Mayshadwomanmag.com is very well put together. Do you handle it by yourself? I personally handle my social media, and find passion to be behind all the creative direction of Mayshad’s projects. The Mayshad Team is an active actor in our content production. I make sure that every member we recruit shares the spirit of the company and understands the vision of our projects. What are your future goals with this lifestyle concept? The platform is developing the MayshadTV, with an empowering audiovisual content. The mayshadwomanclub.com is growing into a network with communication tools for its members. And Maison Mayshad, our luxury handbag brand, is soon starting its presence in the Middle East with a store in Doha. Visit: www.mayshadwomanmag.com or www.mayshadwomanclub.com www.ohlala-magazine.com

a prime choice
If you’re in search for a steak house, then Prime restaurant might just be the perfect choice for a wonderful evening. We discover what this fabulous hotspot has to offer
F
inding a worthy steak house in Doha can seem endless. Not to mention, exhausting. But for those passionate steak house-lovers, fear no more, as Prime restaurant located at InterContinental Doha The City promises the finest selection of cuts cooked to perfection. With a bold look, the venue is a timeless meat destination with much to offer. Housing 74 seats, the hotspot delivers a private and a common area, plus a live grill show kitchen with an array of house beverages accompanied with their delectable menu -one we found an arduous task to choose from. With a wooden appeal and an edgy feel to its décor, its façade wasn’t the only thing that caught our attention. And so we were ready to venture on an epicurean journey. To commence with our delectable evening we opted for one of the venue’s most popular dish, its short ribs. Suitable for one person, the ribs were nothing but soft with a tender bite. And its BBQ sweet sauce was heavensent mixed with a bit of wasabi. We were absolutely sold on this one and we highly recommend trying it. Venturing on another appetiser, we gave the popular foise gras a go, a true epicurean selection with a salty bite accompanied with a sweet strawberry sauce that locked all the amazing flavours in this aphrodisiac dish. But it all came in full circle with the main course. We were served with three different types of meat, medium rare, and boy was it good. Served like kings, we enjoyed a USA tenderloin, USA rib eye and a wagyu. Cooked to perfection, we also tried some side dishes that accompanied our mains; truffle mash potato, Japanese mushroom, and an egg yolk that is slowly cooked for 3 hours. And to end our night, a platter of an assorted selection of pastries and other mouthwatering desserts helped to seal our appetite. Regardless of your motives to visit this outstanding venue, Prime will take you on a ride experiencing the very best of steak house cuisine. Prime is open daily from 6pm until 11pm. Local Escapes
Stay in Doha & Relax Away For those who find it difficult to book a quick get-away to the most exotic destinations in the world, Sofia Graniello hunts down the perfect staycation in the heart of the city. Find out which hotel you need to visit for a wonderful and luxurious retreat
It comes as no surprise that a hotel such as the St.Regis Doha proudly carries the baton for “The GCC Hotel of the year.” Being awarded with such a prestigious award by the Food and Travel GCC Tourism Awards, this leading hotel was one I was eager to visit. Being positioned amongst the most luxurious hotels in the country, its location, architectural design as well as unique butler service, makes this prominent hotel constantly in hot demand. Excited and ready, I made my way to the reception area. And as busy as a Thursday afternoon can be, my check-in was smooth, helpful and quick. And we all know how dreadful check-ins can get. Filled with a diverse clash of expats and locals, we all had something in common: To enjoy to a great staycation with family, friends, or on a solo quick getaway. It also comes as no surprise that Doha can get rather cluttered, creating unnecessary distress on Thursday evenings and weekends. Let’s start with its horrendous traffic. But now you might be thinking: Why would I go to the center of the city, for a relaxing staycation during my weekend? Think again. The superb hotel offers an immense variety of activities, spa treatments, access to the pool, breakfast, brunch (if you stay for a Friday), and of course, their luxurious Butler service. In reality, there is no need to leave the hotel’s premises. It’s all availabe at the tip of your fingers. As I reached my spacious and opulent room, one I can’t complain about, my floor’s magnificent Butler made way to greet me. Providing me with his presentation card for any possible queries, and with a full-on explanation of my room and its functions, I was truly impressed and excited to discover much more. The St.Regis Doha offers eleven destination restaurants and lounges with a true reflection of its proud heritage and cultural excellence. But not only that, the fantastic hotel also delivers top treatments at their Remede Spa, featuring 22 private rooms. One spa I always seem to go back to. Their team, spacious facilities, and top therapists do make a difference when choosing where to spend your money for a relaxing treatment. But as we digress
to its excellent restaurants, it’s safe to say this is Qatar’s finest luxurious destination offers epicurean destinations such as, Hakassan, which was also awarded this year with the “Best Asian” award by the Food and Travel GCC Tourism Awards. The epitome of exclusivity with a spectacular ambience. But if perhaps fine dining is not your cup of tea, I had to give their room service a go for my evening. All I can say is: It was smooth, efficient and quick. One I enjoyed from the comfort of my room. As for breakfast options, if you are not into brunches like myself, then I suggest you try the exquisite breakfast offering an International buffet at Vine restaurant. Available from 6am until 11am, the hours are ideal for early birds and for those who find it a challenge to get up! With a wonderful view of the Arabian Gulf, I sadly said my goodbyes to a relaxing get-away in the heart of the city, where I was truly pampered with a luxurious touch.

Bahraini artist Sumaya Abdul Ghani produces real talking points. Her work is rooted in religion, where she brings out the richness of Islam in the most telling way
Tell us a bit about your background. Are you an artist by training or did this develop spontaneously?
your Lord is the most generous who has taught the writing by the pen, who has taught man that which he knew not. Surat Al Alaq 1-5.
Since I was a child I loved art and gradually I started taking workshops and art classes. I only thought of it as a career in 2009.
How do you take loaded concepts like Islam and create a piece of art out of it? Where do you even begin? Ideas normally are taken from contemplating and studying the Quran and its interpretation. It all started when I began attending the Quran club (Bathrat Eman). We research, study and discuss many topics of the Quran. From these mindful gatherings, many ideas pop in my head.
Does your heritage inform your art and how you create your collections? I am inspired by the Quran and I consider it to be a part of my heritage. Your work stems from very visceral places - there are rich stories behind your collections. Tell us about some of them? I’m going to talk about my latest project ( Iqra) which means read in Arabic. My statement explains it perfectly: Read...The first word revealed in the Holy Quran. Read... An invitation to awaken the minds... An invitation of enlightenment...Then comes the pen... Another invitation to research and document Read...Write...Research and document are the threads of science. Are those threads woven in the right form? To advance? To develop the earth? In a manner that is assenting to God? Or is it that some have strayed the path? Have abused science? Have lost their way...Read! In the name of your Lord who has created all that exists. He has created man from a clot. Read! And 88

“I have been focusing on spreading the true Islam through art, but I definitely feel socially responsible towards other causes”
Do you feel a sense of responsibility to address wider issues through the medium of art? So far I have been focusing on spreading the true Islam through art, but I definitely feel socially responsible towards other causes. What has been your most profound collection to you on a personal level? All the artwork that I have produced are like my children, so I can’t choose one over another, all of them are precious. Have you got any upcoming exhibitions in Bahrain or the GCC we can look forward to? I have a future plan that I will announce later on in the year.

Smart Summer Workouts Pallavi Patil, our resident contributor, weighs in on how to get fit without it being a dreadful summer task
Trading in your regular spot on the gym treadmill for a lane on the outdoor running track? It may seem like you’re just swapping out the location of your jog (because who wants to be inside when the sun is shining?), but there’s a lot more that changes in terms of your workout routine when warmer weather finally arrives. From the wardrobe to the beauty products you put on your skin, spring and summer can impact the way you sweat. As you transition from indoor Pilates to outdoor yoga, keep these tips below in mind: Workout in the Morning or the Evening Instead of working out in peak sunshine hours, set your alarm clock just a tad earlier for a morning workout. If you’re not an early bird, try an early evening workout.
Dress Smart Prevent an uncomfortable (and even unsafe) workout by dressing appropriately for the weather. A good option is a loose, breathable tank and sweats in a very light and water-repellent fabric. You don’t want anything too skin-tight, as you may feel restricted in the heat. Offer yourself even more protection with a hat and sunglasses.
Be Wary of Protein Loading Studies have shown that consuming too much protein before your workout could elevate your body’s temperature, making you feel even hotter. Consume protein after your workout when it helps rebuild muscles. It’s better to cool down before you warm up to perform better in the heat. Sipping a flavoured ice drink 30 minutes before you exercise can improve performance by enabling you to exercise longer.
Try a Water-Based Workout Pool or water-based workouts are ideal for the girl who hates the heat but doesn’t want to be stuck in a gym or lose the opportunity to soak up some vitamin D. Try swimming laps (a great full-body cardio option that’s also low-impact) or a water aerobics class to stay cool while you burn some calories. But remember—even though it might not seem like 90

“From the wardrobe to the beauty products you put on your skin, spring and summer can impact the way you sweat” it, you still sweat when you’re in the water. With that being said, you’ll want to make sure you keep a water bottle on the side of the pool to rehydrate while you’re working out.
Use Sunscreen Sunscreen should be an essential part of any outdoor fitness routine. One study showed that cyclists are exposed to more than 30 times the recommended UV radiation exposure. Apply one ounce of waterresistant sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside, even if it’s cloudy.

Do We Expect Too Much From Our Best Friend? Martyn Stewart, chartered psychologist, weighs in on the term ‘friend’
If you’re labelled as someone’s ‘best friend’, it’s assumed
you ‘know the rules’. Keep our secrets; listen to us, when nobody else will, (or wants to); be loyal, patient, open and non-judgemental. That is expected. However, this can be a lot of pressure and many sign up without reading the ‘terms and conditions’ properly. The dictionary definition of a friend is: ‘a person who has a strong liking for and trust in another person.’ It’s hard to decide who really makes the cut. Differentiating between ‘friends’ and ‘associates’ is just awkward. You’ll probably lose friends if you do. You know how sensitive people are nowadays! However, we must see the world as it is; not how we’d like it to be. This includes not only our best friend, but ourselves. Having a strong ‘liking’ for many people is normal, but a strong trust is different. At times we can overzealously - and prematurely - elevate a ‘fr-associate’, (you know those people who aren’t really friends but too nice to be an associate), to best friend status. However, do we then expect too much from them; creating an unsustainable illusion to protect our own fragility? We demand best friends to be flawless and react how we want them to. This is unrealistic for anyone and our anointed best friends may struggle with it. They might interpret things a little differently to us, more so, if we’re too demanding! This is when we need to take that long, hard look in the mirror. Are the expectations we hold even fair?
92
www.ohlala-magazine.com
When we disagree with our best friend it can be monumental, especially if we feel they ‘let us down’. We may have shared many years or significant moments, but does that mean they must meet our expectations? The fickle amongst us, might switch to another friend who ‘knows the rules better’ whilst the more fragile may insulate themselves with ‘several’ best friends. However, neither really work. If nobody reaches the level of best friend, don’t proclaim pretenders to the throne just to have somebody. It just means more people might fall off your lofty friendship pedestal. You’re more likely to damage your own self-esteem constantly juggling their needs in an attempt to avoid disappointment, ‘betrayal’ or non-validation. Having best friends should be the simplest thing in the world. In an ideal one, it would be. However, ours is not. They may be your best friend, but you might not necessarily be theirs, if your behaviour and expectations step outside the ‘safe-zone’. That’s a hard reality to face, but also a very real reason to continue acquiring the skills so not to take your friends for granted. We owe them that at least. Martyn Stewart is a chartered psychologist, relationship consultant and international motivational speaker. With over 15 successful years he’s assisted individuals worldwide via his mentoring, teaching and coaching. He also authored the book ‘Why Men Really Cheat – The Psychological Secrets of Male Infidelity’. www.relationship-solutions.co.uk

bali from hell
It was paradise from the beginning. But 48 hours later, I wanted to go home… Bali is paradise. That is one thing I can assure you. Many would’ve been envious of my 5-day trip to a destination that offers the perfect setting for a couple’s retreat, a quick honeymoon escape, or any romance-related sort of thing. But with my luck, it was hell. Being a photography junkie, I witnessed one of the most stunning views a jetsetter could ask for. Not to mention my popularity on Instagram went up a notch. So what went wrong? Blinded by stupidity, I tagged along someone I was casually dating. In my defense, we were more than just ‘seeing each other’. All signs were pointing North for a magical trip, filled with amazing and colourful memories. But crying over the phone to my best friend wasn’t exactly the memory I wanted to get from my travels. ‘The American boy’ as I used to call him, voluntarily met my parents before our great escape. He claimed he wanted to leave a great impression on my friends and family, but surely, that was just a facade. Let’s rewind two months before my trip to paradise when our relationship was ‘progressing’. 98
www.ohlala-magazine.com
The American boy was a very confident 29 year-old man. With a dominant and fiery attitude, he oozed nothing, but power. A trait I’ve always searched for in the men I date. We bonded over art, museums, travelling, independence and surprisingly, my culture - a man who knew what he wanted, knowing full well of expiration dates, making it difficult to put him into my ‘casual dating’ box. In conclusion, we had a lot of things in common – or so I thought. And it was during our time in Bali that reminded me of people’s true intentions. On our third day in paradise, his true colours began to emerge from this seeming pond of magic, with no turning back. And for the sake of saving what’s left of his manhood and decency, I’ll skip the embarrassing details, but tell you that he was one to quickly dismiss the idea that genuine girls do exist. Miss Ohlala is officially retiring from the dating scene, leaving it to karma to take care of unfinished business…
