Ruffles, pleats, embroidery, lace-up, draping, and even corsets – you’re obviously very detail-oriented when it comes to your design aesthetic. What do your clothes stand for? What are such details meant to convey? Actually, the details already showcase my designs. I have always dressed women and have a certain woman in my imagination. With this collection, I wanted to picture and highlight a woman at her most beautiful– that is why I used certain forms and shapes to give space for such details. We were instantly intrigued by the name of your new collection. Why Arrogant? ‘Arrogant’ is a word that has been with me ever since I was a little child. My family and friends used to tell me how arrogant I am to an extent where it even affected me in my work and private life, but there’s a positive side about it is: my own new collection was born. Long story short, Arrogant is and always has been inside of me. Describe the Tayfun Kaba woman in three words. Dramatic, brave, attitude...

Launching your own brand in the middle of a pandemic sounds downright daunting. What can you tell us about the experience? I have been working in the fashion sector for many years and even gave consultancy to several companies. Launching my own brand – and therefore my own collection – has always been a dream of mine, but I never found the time to do so. While being forced to stay home due to the pandemic, I finally had the time and turned the situation into something positive for me. I do not want to generalise, but, in my opinion, anyone who did not come up with anything during quarantine is not creative. The time during lockdown gave me the needed energy, and I had to use it in order to accomplish something that’s been in me for so long.

One glance at your Instagram account, and it’s evident you’re an avid traveller. How does that factor into who you are a designer and a person? I was born and raised in Germany, and decided to continue my profession in Turkey. Due to the fact that I grew up with two different cultures and have travelled back and forth a lot of times, seeing and learning from new cultures became a passion of mine.The places I go and the people I meet constantly inspire me.

Off Balance? Amidst the challenging events of 2020 were countless lessons to be learned, one being the impact of our home, our surroundings, on our well-being. To that end, OHLALA taps a feng shui expert who combines her expertise in and passion for the ancient practice with interior design and wellness to create spaces that are in harmony with their dwellers.

hile the concept of feng shui is a novelty on the pages of OHLALA, it’s anything but new – experts suggest it has been around for over 6,000 years. But for those still wondering what it is, let us break it down. Feng shui – literally “wind-water” – is a pseudoscientific practice originating in ancient China that claims to use energy forces to harmonise individuals with their environment. How? By arranging the pieces in living spaces in order to create balance with the natural world. And at a time when we’ve mastered the art of staying in, feng shui is more important than ever. Elaborating on how the role of feng shui has evolved over the course of 2020, Simone Osswald of SO Feng Shui Design says, “This year has indeed made people more conscious of their home surroundings. Being forced to stay at home and spending more time inside their four walls has changed the operations of their daily lives and shifted their attention towards arranging their homes to their new operational needs. People decluttered their rooms, redecorated their homes, and set up home offices. Even those unfamiliar with the concept of feng shui have unconsciously and naturally applied this ancient technique for themselves. Feng shui is indeed about creating a feel-good home with positive energies.” www.ohlalamag.net

And speaking of feeling good, we can’t help but discuss how mental health has been a hot-button issue for the last few months. “Mental health issues such as anxiety and depression can have a variety of causes and, in some cases, one’s physical environment can contribute to these health issues,” she says. “Blockages such as overwhelmingly cluttered spaces and unsuitable furniture placements can simply be remedied by decluttering and rearranging furniture pieces in a way that supports the positive energy flow throughout the entire home. Feng shui for the home can be compared to the practice of acupuncture for the body – once the blockages are removed, positive energy can flow again and bring us back to balance and harmony.” As for the execution of feng shui principles? “We first need to understand the existing energies,” says Simone. “This is an exercise carried out by a professional feng shui practitioner, who has studied the calculation of energies through compass readings and formulas, and knows how to address serious and harmful imbalances in health, life, and financial matters. Just like a physiotherapist who has studied how to unlock bodies and ease pain, feng shui does not follow a one-size-fits-all formula when it comes to life-changing solutions. However, there are universal rules for spaces that can improve the overall energy flow in our homes to support general well-being – without pretending to change our lives.” 30

She suggests that we start by decluttering, one of the most popular and effective methods to facilitate a smooth flow of energy. “Clutter hinders an even qi flow, blocking our personal energy. Like acupuncture for the body, good feng shui ensures a smooth flow of energy in our homes, resulting in ease of mind and spirit. With everyone staying at home these days, clutter can accumulate easily and quickly, resulting in stress and an overwhelming state of mind. Feng shui advocates decluttering as a major home detox at least once a year. However, we can use our current time at home for thorough spring-cleaning sessions and an ongoing decluttering regimen.” Simone also brings our attention to drawers, bookshelves, and wardrobes, all of which tend to contain too many things, thereby hindering the flow of qi throughout the entire space. “The rule of thumb is don’t keep items that you haven’t used for the last 12 months in your home. This is a good time to give away what you no longer need to those in need. Sort and tidy up the things you’re keeping and carry out five-minute ‘clutter checks’ throughout the day to ensure your home supports a positive state of mind at all times.” Furthermore, she advises us to avoid furniture with sharp edges, keep walkways unobstructed, opt for natural materials, and decorate with plants in order to uplift the overall mood of a space. “You could compare this approach to the practice of yoga, which might not cure acute pain, but generally helps you stay flexible.”

As for taking self-care to the next step? Simone explains that we can actually create our very own “wellness oasis” at home as opposed to heading to a spa or retreat. “Based on my Second Nature© concept, there are a few tips on how to incorporate feng shui wellness into your home: • Put on some relaxing background music with the volume on low. • Put on your favourite ‘comfort’ clothes, especially if they’re freshly washed. • Open the doors and windows to refresh the qi in all rooms. • Turn on an air diffuser with your favourite essential oil in the rooms where you spend most of the day. • Turn off all electronic devices in the bedroom, including the Wi-Fi router, at night for radiation-free and therefore deeply regenerating sleep. • Make your home beautiful by decorating with items that are meaningful to you or those you simply find pleasing and uplifting.” Head to www.so-fengshui.com to contact Simone Osswald and learn more.

Simmer the petals in a pot of water for 30 minutes. The ratio is 3:1, so use three cups of water with one cup of rose petals. Just make sure the water is simmering, not boiling. 4. You know your rosewater is ready when you see the petals and water change colour slightly. Take off the pot and let the rosewater cool. 5. Strain the rosewater in an empty spray bottle. This formula contains no preservatives and therefore has a very short shelf life, so keep it in the fridge for about a week. Happy spritzing!

We find ourselves on the – wait for it – 22nd floor! Ours is the first room, close to the executive lounge. Here, we enjoy a complimentary breakfast while taking in a breathtaking view of Doha and the Arabian Gulf. Gourmet snacks and refreshments are served in this area throughout the day. We take a seat at the newly launched Bab Al Bahr, an outdoor restaurant by the beach with an absolute chill ambience. As our staycation continues, my visits to the eforea spa are always more rewarding. The spa centre promises a true awakening of the senses. I simply cannot get enough! First, I try a body scrub at the hammam, then a dreamy Elemis facial. I can still smell the spicy and fruity aromas.

My fabulous spa experience ends with a romantic couples massage with my husband, an amazing experience that I recommend wholeheartedly. We leave feeling renewed and destressed – exactly what 2020 calls for. The time we spend in between the spa and pool during this dreamy staycation is complemented by chilling out on the comfy chaise lounges at the pool and seaside while indulging in the fantastic meals that are being served. The restaurants are unique, each with its own personality. The Mawasem has a never-ending buffet where everyone’s taste is satisfied. It serves Asian wok-fried dishes and tandoori specialties, and is open from breakfast through dinner. You can also simply enjoy tempting desserts or drinks at Sawalif with friends in tow. If you just feel like coffee – to wake up or help continue your culinary journey – just visit Ya Hala! Trader Vic’s is still my favourite among the amazing dining options at Hilton Doha. The special variety of authentic dishes will definitely leave your taste buds dancing in celebration. Once fully satisfied, make a jaunt to the Tahitian Village for one last treat while admiring views of the city. Clear skies, blue waters, soothing spa treatments, smiling faces – Hilton Doha has rapidly become one of Ohlala’s favourite secret hideaways, and for good reason.

here is nothing rarer than an absolutely perfect platter of dim sum, so when we were invited to try the Sunset Brunch hosted by Shanghai Club, it was an easy decision to head down there. As we arrive, we receive a warm welcome and even see one of Qatar’s favourite hostesses, Phenny. Most of the very welcoming staff at this restaurant hail from Thailand, so trust their recommendations when it comes to the menu – we always do and have yet to be disappointed. Our guests are running slightly late, but we’re not left alone at the table. Delightful canapés arrive at the table comprising of steamed pumpkin cake, dragon shrimp ball, coconut chicken, and muddled shellfish, all elegantly presented with edible pansy flower petals. With 360-degree views of the city and the Arabian Gulf, it’s a real treat for all the senses, especially when the sky is clear. The interior is modern and stylish that, when combined with the breathtaking view and elegant atmosphere, creates an upmarket and soothing atmosphere.

It is the moment of truth as the dim sum arrives. Again, there is an option for my pescatarian guest with a steamed Asian vegetable and classic har gow. All the options are brimming with freshness and popping with flavour, which is why I usually find that great dim sum is hard to find – but these little flavour bombs do not disappoint. And just when we also can’t get enough of the roasted duck and foie gras, the mains arrive. With an unbelievable selection of options, we are at a loss as to where to start. On the side, we order an extra helping of dim sum. This is why we are here, after all! Back to mains, we are impressed by the variety – from a delicious papaya salad and achingly fresh sushi through to our two favourites, the braised Angus beef cheek seasoned with interesting Asian spice and signature Pecking duck served with traditional condiments. Additionally, there’s an assortment of sides and all the meat and non-meat options one could hope for. It’s time for a chat and to enjoy the marvellous setting and a palate cleanser. A fresh and cool jasmine and strawberry sorbet arrives – just the thing to reset our taste buds. Just in time for sunset and curious to try Korean desserts, we are served three very different options: peanut parfait, yuzu and ginger tea, and oolong apple black tea mousse with an apple and goji berry marmalade. All the sweets are captivating in their own ways, but we dub the peanut parfait a winner. Somewhere between its upbeat crowd and Korean culinary favourites, Shanghai Club’s Sunset Brunch is definitely one for the books. It also wins bonus points for catering vegetarians and pescatarians alike. We also find the idea of having brunch from 2 pm to 7 pm rather appealing – it gives us plenty of time to get our outfits on point and even master the cat-eye flick! The setting of this brunch is also perfect for flattering photos, with high-rise buildings and turquoise waters serving as a backdrop. You can expect a set menu that is served to your table and everything is unlimited, so you can top up whatever wins your heart. hen the name of your restaurant translates to ‘dining table’ in the Khaleeji dialect of Arabic, the pressure is on – but Smat is up to the task. Serving as another one of Chef Fawaz Al Omaim’s culinary playgrounds, this everpopular venue is mostly frequented by locals and always fully booked. The spacious layout boasts elaborate interiors whilst emitting a clean and calm ambience. We are welcomed with Arabic coffee and meet the wonderful restaurant manager, Adham Al Rayes. It’s a beautiful Saturday morning and we are eager to discover another breakfast gem since they are few and far between in Qatar. We are told that the experts at Smat were inspired to create an eclectic, modernised

version of Qatari and Khaleeji cuisine – they interpret the term ‘eclectic’ as shifting a plate from traditional origins to a modern-day rendition. We are served an array of dishes, and each looks more like a work of art with its own story to tell. The Shakshuka is a completely different and unexpected twist of the traditional version, presented inside the eggplant itself and accompanied by the couscous salad and signature Smat sauce. If you ever thought that having pasta for breakfast was a strange idea, think again. The Luh Al Saed is a linguini omelette with cherry tomatoes, avocado foam, and an alfredo-saffron sauce that is out of this world. It’s also presented to look like the Loh Al Saad jewellery that brides wear on their wedding day. Meanwhile, another plate with a variety of dips is designed to look like a local boardgame called Dama.

Everything is so elegantly presented, and we are spoilt with every taste and texture that lands our way. We completely fall in love with the Nirat that entails crispy dumpling dough stuffed with cheese, lemon zest, and a mix of lentils, beans, and Qatari spices. Not only are they crafted to look like mini money bags, but they’re also totally adorable. The selection feels seemingly endless, and we’re pleased to see how many vegetarian options are on the menu. Oh, and if you – like us – love a sweet-salty combination, Smat is a must-try. Hisabi, for example, is a trio of feta cheese balls that have been breaded with pistachio, pomegranate, and crushed Qatar Pafki chips – a completely ingenious appetiser! Our breakfast spread does not end here. To finish, we are presented with dessert! We find it different but delightful, and the combination makes sense with the last coffee before you start your day. With eight breakfast dessert delights to choose from, our favourite is easily the Rayyan Roll, a Swiss roll stuffed with vanilla cream and soaked in brightpink rose milk. It feels like biting into a cloud and literally melts in your mouth! Smat serves breakfast from 8 am till 11:40 am every day. It’s also very popular for lunch and dinner, and we recommend that you book (well) ahead to avoid disappointment. This is the only restaurant in the world that owns its own dancing fountain and, at night, has its very own show for patrons to enjoy. It’s time to get going and, upon leaving, we’re given the opportunity to write a personal review to attach on a special board in the restaurant. With so much passion and detail in every aspect of this restaurant experience, we recommend taking your out-of-town guests to Smat for a truly unique Arabic meal.

50 years after from the debut of the last spider in the Ferrari range to sport a front-mounted V12, the 812 GTS hails a triumphant return for a model type that has played a pivotal role in the marque’s history since its foundation. Like its historic predecessors, the 812 GTS sets a new benchmark in terms of performance and exclusivity. Sporting Ferrari’s majestic 800 cv V12, it is not merely the most powerful production spider on the market, but also the most versatile, thanks to its retractable hard top.

ENGINE The 812 GTS is the spider version of the 812 Superfast, from which it takes both its specifications and performance, most notably the power unit that, thanks to its ability to unleash a massive 800 cv at 8500 rpm, is the most powerful engine in its class. 718 Nm of torque guarantees impressive acceleration while the heady 8900 rpm rev limit means that sporty driving is undiminished.

The shape of the torque curve reveals that torque distribution was not sacrificed to boost power. A significant 80 percent of maximum torque is available at just 3500 rpm, improving both flexibility and pick-up at lower revs. The shape of the power curve (which rises constantly all the way to the maximum revs of 8500 rpm) and the rapidity with which engine speed increases (thanks to low inertia) give occupants the feeling of boundless power and acceleration. The dual-clutch transmission’s gear-shift strategies enhance the car’s sportiness. When the Manettino is in sportier settings, both up and down shift times have been significantly cut and the transition time has been optimised to enhance the driver experience. Exhaust-wise, prevalence was given to combustion order harmonics by modifying the geometry of the centre extension pipes. The result is a fullbodied V12 sound in the cabin, particularly appreciable when the top is down. www.ohlalamag.net

DIVA Drives suction (and thus downforce) from the underbody, the aerodynamicists were able to compensate for the downforce lost by the removal of the 812 Superfast’s rear wheel arch by-pass duct. Meticulously detailed work went into guaranteeing an excellent standard of comfort on-board with the top down. There was huge focus on minimising both turbulence inside the cabin and aerodynamic noise to ensure occupants can converse undisturbed – even at high speeds.

VEHICLE DYNAMICS The 812 GTS is equipped with all of the 812 Superfast’s new generation components and control systems and, like it, delivers impressive handling. It sports Electric Power Steering (EPS) to fully exploit the potential of the car in terms of performance by integrating it with all of the electronic vehicle dynamics controls, including Version 5.0 of Ferrari’s patented SSC. The following driver-assistance features are also featured to enhance performance: • Ferrari Peak Performance (FPP): when cornering, the steering wheel torque will provide the driver with an indication that the car is getting closer to its limit of grip, helping the control of that dynamic state. • Ferrari Power Oversteer (FPO): in the case of oversteer, most frequently induced while powering out of corners, the steering wheel torque will give the driver feedback to give steering wheel inputs that are coherent with realigning the car correctly. • Optimised calibration of the car’s magnetorheological dampers means its elastic set-up is the same as the berlinetta version, despite the 75kg increase in weight caused by strengthening work on the chassis.

DESIGN The 812 GTS echoes the formal language and proportions of Ferrari’s front-engine V12 without altering either its exterior dimensions or interior space and comfort. The draped design of the flanks visually shortens the tail and is characterised by sharply slanted crease lines and impressively muscular wheel arches that imbue it with the power and aggression warranted by its imposing V12. The entire rear of the car – roof, tonneau cover, and luggage compartment – has been redesigned. The buttresses were designed to visually embody a sense of forward thrust and lend the side windows a signature look that would set the spider apart from the berlinetta.

• Consequently, its overall performance levels are very close to those of the berlinetta, with 0-100 km/h acceleration in under three seconds and 0-200 km/h in just 8.3 seconds. The Ferrari 812 GTS’s maximum speed is the same as the berlinetta’s: 340 km/h.
