“The intense glamour of the disco era resided in a multiplication of colours and textures,” explained Cécile. “I had to find a way to make this idea tangible. Working with the stones themselves proved to be a considerable challenge. Because stones of very similar hues can end up looking completely different depending on their size and the type of setting.” The principal distinction in the 10 models is the arrangements of the stones, setting pattern, engraving and the central decoration of the 0.90mm thickness dial. At the same time, they all share the same CRMT1 calibre – Richard Mille’s eighth in-house movement, but its first automatic Tourbillon calibre. It’s a true technical achievement, given that this mechanism is integrated into the heart of a movement only 6.2mm thick and weighing just eight grams. Treatments that previously were only available at spas and dermatology clinics are now happening in the comfort of peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s homes. The devices became smaller and easier, with men and women alike adhering to self-care. Yes, the pandemic gave it a push, but demand was increasing well before it wreaked havoc on our lives. CurrentBody is specialised in offering edgy beauty devices, and its recent launch in the Middle East has been received enthusiastically by the beauty buffs out there. Here, Laurence Newman, CEO of CurrentBody, tells us more about his company and the future of home skincare.

BEAUTY Insight

Technology is present in many aspects of our everyday life. How did CurrentBody notice that a platform dedicated to health and well-being home care innovations could be a success? Was it challenging to have people embracing the concept at the beginning? CurrentBody was set up 11 years ago, and I used all my background in aesthetic procedures in the clinic to create it. As technology advanced, I believed that clinic treatments could be miniaturised into at-home devices that offered people the chance to boost their salon results with supporting devices to be used at home. Whilst the home-use options were very few 11 years ago, the sector has advanced significantly, and we now have a massive range of technologies available for customers. We’ve always believed that education is essential with home-use devices, and our expertise has helped people embrace the concept. Nowadays, it is easy to find at least one electrical beauty tool in most households. What do you think are the reasons for people wanting to take care of themselves at home? The demand for beauty tools and devices has undoubtedly grown as people have discovered that their favourite salon technologies can be found in home-use devices. We have seen the anti-ageing category, in particular, rise over the recent years as it has become far more acceptable to talk about taking care of yourself – both in a clinic and at home. The growth of ‘self-care Sunday’ has led to people sharing details of their beauty routines on social media and increased the conversation around both taking time out for yourself and tackling the signs of ageing. This fact became even more relevant during the lockdown periods of 2020, when salons were closed and people had to look for alternative ways to maintain their beauty routines.

Once upon a time,

Msheireb was the breathing heartbeat of Doha. As the city evolved, it became a bit of a backwater as West Bay developed, and the city centre effectively moved elsewhere. Things go round in circles and, now, Msheireb has been resuscitated and given a whole new lease on life. The neighbourhood has been reimagined with light-stone buildings and a tram system that meanders through the buildings, transporting office workers, passersby, and café customers around and through it. Currently, there are only three hotels open in Msheireb and I checked one out: Alwadi Hotel Doha MGallery, a property in the Accor Hotels portfolio. Despite occupying 20 floors, it retains a boutique feel and, starting from my first impression of the sweet scent in the lobby, high standards were a hallmark of my visit. I stayed in a stunning suite that overlooked the Souq Waqif. From ground level, I knew we were close to it, but from my fifth-floor vantage point, I could see that this was quite the bird’s eye view! The outlets are all impressive and enhanced my stay. O’Glacee’s is the bar and restaurant on the pool deck and serves a delicious selection of comfort classics like burgers, pizza, and a very tasty fish and chips that I tried during its happy hour. Meanwhile, a projector showing live sport on a giant screen gives the place a relaxed feel. Oh, and the pool doesn’t just have loungers by it – there’s loungers built into the pool, making it a great spot to simultaneously read a book, receive some rays, and stay cool! Le Colonial, on the first floor, is where breakfast is served, although it’s open all day. Based on my experience of breakfast, I’ve started recommending that everyone goes there because it 66

is a wonderful setting with efficient staff and an excellent, but not exhaustive, menu. Le Colonial keeps it simple and lets you choose between fresh fruit, yoghurt, or granola and then lets you pick an egg dish of your choice. I had the tartine, which was a delicious pairing of poached eggs and crushed avocado on toast with a drizzle of lemon. The balcony here looks out across Souq Waqif, although it was a little windy during my stay, so I stayed indoors, admiring the rich woods and naked bulbs in decorative arrangements that add a trendy and bohemian vibe. Sofra, the Lebanese-themed dining room on the lobby level, is a warm and intimately lit cavern of a place with wooden dividers where you can hide away and get lost in a plethora of dishes. www.ohlalamag.net

I enjoyed the mezzes that took over the table in no time. I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t help but notice the quirky repurposed drinking vessel in which the fattoush salad was served. Both the quality of the cooking and the impressive standard of the beverage menu were highly commendable. The gym is full of new equipment and, due to pandemic-induced restrictions, I had it all to myself as the hotel keeps numbers down to ensure social distancing. I really loved my room, and it was a wonderful space to spend some time away from home. Spacious and comfortable, its warm shades of beige and brown made it feel very homely. The spirit of the souq travels across the road to the hotel, with light tiling and chiselled edges in the interiors adding an old-world desert feel to the surroundings. The bathtub was huge and a definite highlight of the suite. There were hisand-hers sinks with deep, hollow bowls and plenty of space to store stuff. The proximity of the property to places of interest is something that makes a stay here 68

so worthwhile â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Msheireb Museums, Souq Waqif, and the corniche are all a short walk away. Confession: I enjoyed haggling with the traders at the shopping emporium as it meant that my efforts will be rewarded with returning to the luxury of doing nothing at Alwadi Hotel.

Avant-Garde Comfort As restaurants are starting to get busy again, OHLALA’s Craig Ferriman pays another visit to STK.

There was massive excitement when STK first opened its doors in

Doha in January 2019, which feels like a distant memory, but it was only two years ago! The social media campaign leading up to its launch was like no other I’d seen before for a new dining sensation. The hype was duly warranted, things were going well – then COVID-19 happened and everything had to be closed down. To the rejoice of many, STK reopened in November, and I was delighted to make a return. There is a level of panache at this restaurant that is barely comparable to any other in the city. While the menu has had a subtle facelift, some things have proudly remained the same. STK tries to be a modern twist in the age-old American steakhouse. One of the most distinguishing manifestations of that is the tremendous range of appetisers that, perhaps heretically, excites me more than the headline entrée. I could happily go to STK and just order a selection of starters and raw bar items, go home, and be quite contented! The restaurant is rightly most proud of the wagyu beef carpaccio. It’s unparalleled thanks mainly to the foie gras on top of it, but also the parmesan, cherry tomato dust, brioche, and vinaigrette. It breaks apart beautifully, and every morsel is delicious. The grilled octopus salad is another winner, with a curled tentacle lying on a bed of fava beans, tomato, olive tapenade, and citrusy lemon vinaigrette. I ordered a couple of things from the 70

raw bar, and I was hugely impressed. The tuna tartare is easily compared to the best I’ve ever eaten. Served in a bowl and presented as a cake, it sat beneath a lid of taro chips and complemented by the trendiest of the fruits: avocados. It was utterly delicious. The jicama tiradito is a Peruvian-inspired raw starter that is ostensibly raw seafood cut in the shape of sashimi. Its tangy taste comes from the combination of mushrooms, avocado, carrots, mango, cucumber, and chilli oil. You do need to leave room for the star of the show, so don’t go too wild. Naturally, as the venue’s name suggests, the main event here is the steak. The meat is sourced from the US, Australia and Japan. The primary choice comes down to size and cut – strip loin, fillet, T-bone or rib-eye – and I went for the latter. There are half a dozen choices of sauce to choose from, but the signature gravy is STK bold, which is undoubtedly unique. Toppings include black truffle butter, king prawns and foie gras, although I was happy to enjoy the steak as it is. I did order the mac ‘n’ cheese as a side dish – just because. STK delivers what you expect on the dessert front of a steakhouse, be it the New York cheesecake or Belgian chocolate cake. Both are great, but the real hit that gets everyone reaching for their phones is the highly Instaworthy Junk Chalice. This giant fruit bowl mired in pink candy floss arrived with ice cream, popcorn, marshmallow and brownie lying beneath all. It’s a picture of gluttony, and the kid in me wasn’t complaining!

f you know anything about the iconic hotels of Qatar, you would be well aware that La Cigale Hotel, Managed by Accor is on the top of the list. You can’t call yourself a true ‘Qatar insider’ unless you have had at least one sushi feast there. And if you’re more of a brunch person, be ready to be delighted by Le Cigalon’s Great “L” Friday Brunch, a decadent spread of international cuisine alongside a wide array of Lebanese specialties. It’s a bright and crisp Friday morning as we enter the bright, yet intimate, interior. We start this culinary journey with a wide selection of salads at the international salad station, neatly presented in small portions arranged on mini platters. The options span octopus potato salad, celery and duck salad, quinoa salad, and traditional Hindbeh salad. We add an absolutely delicious lobster soup and fresh bread straight from the Italian wood-fired oven to these greens before sampling the fine rendition of the beetroot and avocado hummus, which we adore. It is popular knowledge that the sushi at The Yen Sushi Bar at La Cigale Hotel, Managed by Accor is nothing short of legendary and, to our delight, forms part of the brunch display. Planning ahead and going slow on the delectable salads was a premeditated strategy, of course. A carousel of colours spin by on the sushi belt, making it hard to decide which delectable plate to select – all you want to do is try them all. Of course, a few plates make their way back to our table with the friendly waiters, all of 72

whom are super on point and courteous. We are overcome by the burst of fresh flavours from every ensemble. There are so many options that we would have to stay overnight to recuperate if we’re not careful! As we move over to the grill for our main course, a child is overwhelmed with excitement by the sight of the live pasta station. As he runs past, my plate tips and gravy spills on my pure white jacket. But before I can even express my distress, the manager rushes over and asks if I am okay. Without a thought, he calls a server over and insists that they take my jacket to the hotel’s in-house dry cleaner. I’m taken aback by how attentive they are. And on top of that, the dry cleaner was able to assist in such a short time. After being rescued by the superhero manager Raafat, we get back to the table and start to tuck into the mains. The international spread of favourites continues, ranging from fish, pasta, rib eye beef, and lamb with a variety of vegetables and sides. The scents of spices escaping from the kitchen are mouth-watering. The rib eye is cooked to perfection, while the lamb gravy is revolutionary. Finally, someone has thought of serving lamb with truffle gravy – can we have an amen! Meanwhile, the rescued jacket is returned to the table perfectly restored just in time for dessert, which ranges from Arabic sweets to continental cakes and desserts. Everything is presented so beautifully you can hardly bring yourself to eat these works of art. We decide to live on the edge and try something totally new – a move that paid off as we’re delighted by the interesting marshmallow dessert comprising of marshmallow-flavoured mouse and topped with cream, strawberries, marshmallows, and a crunchy dusting. To Market, to Market Hosting brunches may have gotten more complicated lately, but one venue at W Doha makes it look effortless, as OHLALA’s Craig Ferriman finds out.

or as long as I can remember, the W Doha has been a byword for outstanding restaurants, trendy design, and high-level service. I’ve always loved its outlets, but my recent visit to Market illustrated that it hasn’t gotten complacent and remains strong when it comes to its brunch offering. There have been a few staff changes, both in the kitchen and front of house, as well as a few additions to the menu over the past two or three years. Admittedly, some of the changes weren’t to my liking, but under new general manager Jake Woodhouse, this is a brunch to (once again) rave about. Despite the difficulties of Covid-19 restrictions, the vibe at Market is highly sociable and perfect for friends seeking a group brunch. While the traditional buffet set-up is next to impossible, we were allowed to wander around and browse at raw displays behind perspex glass and choose what we’d like, so that the chefs could cook it for us. This had the added bonus of still having that buffet feel, where you have the option to look and see eye-catching displays of food, but can eat it fresh when it arrives cooked – as opposed to dining on lukewarm dishes sitting under lamps for a long time as is often the case.

Unlike so many brunches that really don’t fill you up but lull you into the false sense of security, this one really feeds you. There is starch and substance, even from the appetisers brought to the table. We had a squash pizza, which is new from the à la carte menu, alongside cheese puffs, smoked salmon, burrata cheese, and a tomato salad. I’m also told that no two brunches are alike as the starters and other things are regularly rotated, so it’s always exciting. We then asked for the seafood platter and were handed heavenly pleasures like rock oysters, great lobster, and big prawns among other crustaceans! The digital menu shows a selection of main courses to choose from. These are all greatest hits from the à la carte menu from what I could tell. I chose the beef cheeks, which were divine and served on a bed of mashed potato. I cheekily tasted some of my dining companion’s sea bass en papillote – it was equally delicious. There is a whole desserts station with a plentiful array of sweet treats to choose from, as well as an all-too-rare thing: an actual choose station. Once again, we couldn’t help ourselves to it as we honour the pandemic-related safety rules, but were able to choose what we wanted. The choice of beverages was not curtailed to a few, like so many brunches, but included many great signature W cocktails as well as plenty of bubbly to quaff on. As brunches go, this was truly in the champions league. Good vibes, great food, and excellent service.

t’s no secret that we at OHLALA enjoy the finer things in life. From exotic travel to designer clothing and premium vehicles, we just can’t get enough of the very best on offer. And thanks to the amazing team at Rolls-Royce Bahrain, our ultimate automobile fantasy finally came true when we spent the day in the new Rolls-Royce Ghost. The 2021 model has been completely redesigned. It’s now almost 5.5 metres long and almost two metres at its widest point. The front end is more aggressive in nature than its predecessor, and the newly designed grille is made out of high-quality metal. The spirit of ecstasy bonnet ornament looks sublime and can be ordered in either solid silver or gold plated. This ornament can be manually retracted into the hood from inside the vehicle, but will also retract automatically if anyone attempts to handle it. At the flanks, the optional 21-inch wheels draw the eye to the centre caps that do not move when the car is travelling, ensuring the Rolls-Royce logo always remains upright. A powerful shoulder line gives the sides a robust presence, however, the sleekness of the design ensures this car never looks bulky. The body panels are all made of a single piece of aluminium with master craftsmanship, ensuring there are no joints from front to rear. At the back end, chrome-surrounded twin dual exhausts finish off the exterior with a flourish. In fact, there are chrome accents present all over the vehicle, including above the rear license plate, around the taillights, and around the windows as well as the door handles.

In the rear is ample space on offer with loads of leg and head room. There is a separate climate control in the back as well as a champagne fridge located behind the central arm rest. The rear entertainment system consists of two large screens located on the back of both front seats from which you can operate the infotainment system. These fold away electronically at the touch of a button. There is an array of optional interior extras available for the 2021 Ghost, including rear-seat massage function, Rolls-Royce embossed headrest pillows, and electronic curtains for both the rear windows as well as for the rear windshield. The boot has a capacity of 507 litres and a scuff plate to prevent any loading from damaging the paintwork.

The doors all electronically open and close. The rear doors are rear hinged, meaning they open in the opposite direction to the front ones. Once inside, we were blown away by the sheer class, elegance, and extravagance that greeted us. There are far too many magnificent features to mention in this review, but we will do our best to provide you with some of the highlights. All materials used are of the highest quality available. The leather on the dashboard, on the seats, covering the steering wheel, and even lining the door bins is exceptionally soft to the touch and the hand-stitching has been done so well that it looks like a machine is responsible for it. The wood veneers are solid, thick, and have a shiny finish, whilst everything in the interior that looks like metal is, in fact, metal. The electrically operated seats are huge and super comfortable, housing both heating and massage technology. The carpet on the floors is beautiful and thick, whilst the organ stops on the air vents add a classy touch. The glove box is spacious, while the cup holders are gilded. The dials sit behind a glass screen and, although they are partially digital, they retain a classic look. The infotainment system is basically the same as the BMW i-Drive, but with a classier font. You can use a swivel wheel on the central console to navigate it as well as via touchscreen and buttons located on the stunning steering wheel. 80

Finally, we started up the new Ghost and soon found its performance to match the level of excellence set by its design. The 2021 model boasts a 6.75-litre, twin-turbo V12 engine that produces 571hp and 850Nm of torque. This allows the Ghost to effortlessly accelerate from 0-100km/h in under five seconds and reach a top speed of 250km/h. The power of this engine combined with air suspension, a separate front suspension, an outstanding braking system, roll bars that tighten up to stop the car leaning in the bends, and a multitude of other performance features ensure this is one smooth ride. Thick, double-glazed windows and around 100 kilos of soundproofing material throughout the cabin guarantee a quiet ride that is second to none. All of this, coupled with advanced safety features, provides a secure and relaxing driving experience that simply cannot be beaten. Overall, this is perhaps the most luxurious vehicle we’ve ever had the privilege of test driving.

We’re stepping into the new year full of relief over the end of 2020 – finally! However, despite all the challenges and losses that last year brought to us as a global community, it’s vital to hold onto any positive aspects. For starters, women proved to be great leaders when it came to tackling the pandemic. Jacinda Ardern, prime minister of New Zealand, led a nationwide effort to eradicate the virus and became a reference to the world – and unsurprisingly returned for a second term after a landslide victory. Taiwan also fought the virus with strong leadership by its president, Tsai Ing-wen, followed by Sanna Marin in Finland and Angela Merkel in Germany. They all faced the invisible enemy head-on by opting for early lockdowns, embracing technology, and responding decisively. Mother Nature is another female who triumphed. With the world forced to stop or slow down, carbon emissions fell drastically and the result was an immense difference in the air we breathe. This pause has resulted in countries ready to make some long-term changes – China, Japan, and South Korea have all committed to net-zero emissions by the middle of the century. In the US, Joe Biden is planning to pursue a $2 trillion climate plan. Meanwhile, Apple is aiming to become carbon-neutral by 2030, and Walmart by 2040. And these are just a few examples. Now look around. What positive changes took place in your community? Did you end up doing something that you wouldn’t have if it were not for the pandemic? The truth is that 2021 is still carrying many of the burdens of 2020, so let’s once again take a cue from Pantone and look ahead with both strength and positivity, resilience and hope. 82
