Covid-19 has altered our travel plans, but it hasn’t stopped our wanderlust thirst. It is with this very narrative that I announce my departure as I move forward into new adventures, experiences and creative endeavours. Who even knew that adulting could (and would!) be this hard? M E C H A N I C A L M A S T E R Y Sébastian Vivas, Heritage and Museum Director of Audemars Piguet highlights the brand’s legacy entwined amidst the walls of Musée Atelier Audemars Piguet. Tell me a little bit about yourself. Well, a little like Audemars Piguet (AP), which connects local to international, I was born in Switzerland, in the small city of Neuchâtel, from a Swiss mother and an Argentinian father born in Morocco, whose family is spread across many countries. More seriously, I have discovered watchmaking during my academic studies of history, during a part time job as a documentalist in the Musée International d’Horlogerie of La Chaux-de-Fonds, which owns the world’s largest library dedicated to the history of time. Then, I spent 10 exciting years at Jaeger-LeCoultre as Heritage Director, studying and communicating the history of the oldest Manufacture of the Vallée de Joux. In 2012, I moved five kilometers away to Le Brassus where I joined Audemars Piguet to replace Mr. Martin K. Wehrli, who was retiring after 42 years in the company, as the Heritage and Museum Director. Audemars Piguet is proud to announce the public opening of Musée Atelier Audemars Piguet on 25th June 2020. Tell us why this highly anticipated Musée immerses visitors in the Swiss manufacturer’s cultural universe past, present and future. Audemars Piguet’s oldest building, where Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet set their workshop in 1875, is connected to a futuristic spiral-shaped glass pavilion, which faces the pristine landscape of the Vallée de Joux. The Musée Atelier has also been conceived as a living museum with live ateliers at the centre of the spiral to bring visitors in closer contact with our craftspeople. In our Musée Atelier, some watches are over 250 years old. They still tell the time. Today, the mechanical watches are among the last (if not the only) highly complex objects produced to work for several centuries. These objects not only tell the time, they build a bridge between the past and the future; they transmit the passion of the craftspeople who created them. As emotional objects, they reflect the identity of

their owners who will pass them on to the next generations. One of the major watches exhibited in the Musée Atelier is the unique chronograph wristwatch, pre-model 1533, from 1943. Its beautifully balanced aesthetics inspired the recently launched [Re]master01, another symbol of a bridge between past and future! How does the Musée Atelier Audemars Piguet embody the Manufacture’s free spirit and devotion to the perpetuation of Haute Horlogerie? The past is our foundation. We have to study it, respect it and transmit it to the future generations. On the other hand, like our predecessors, the construction of the future is our constant focal point. All our projects, our lives, our energy are about building a better future. In our challenging era, we need to reinvent ourselves every day, based on what we learnt. www.ohlalamag.net

collector. Yes, the watches were selected for their intrinsic qualities: material, technics, aesthetics, rarity, condition, history. We chose “la crème de la crème”. But first of all they had to illustrate the messages and the stories we convey during the visit. After years of adjustments and re-adjustments of the selection, the heritage team spent a few days in an isolated small hotel, sticking to large walls, small pictures of each watch, reworking the narrative and giving the final touch to the selection.

Which item would you like to draw our attention to from the Audemars Piguet Heritage Collection? Why? 300 masterpieces dating from the 18th to the 21st century are exhibited in the Musée Atelier, including highly complicated watches, masterpieces of design, highjewellery brooches and necklaces, as well as several world firsts. At the centre of the museum resides the so-called “Universelle” pocket watch from 1899, one of the world’s most complicated watches. It took four years for our specialized watchmakers to restore its movement, made of 1168 parts (316 screws). During this process, we managed to convince its previous owner that the best place to host this was in the museum. However, we hope that everyone, from the most experienced watch collectors to amateurs of architecture and tourists discovering our beautiful region, wherever they come from and whatever their age is, finds something that will move them. We hope that they say “wow” a few times and experience something surprising and memorable. Do you have a preference for the type of material you like to include within the historical collections, or that stands out most within the maison’s history? I would not say a preference but rather a difficult decision to make. The selection of the watches exhibited was a long process for the heritage team. The objective was to build the multiple narratives of a guided tour addressed to many types of visitors, from the “béotien” to the most skilled 24

Tell us why everyone should own an Audemars Piguet watch. When our company was founded in 1875, the Swiss watchmaking sector had started its first industrialisation phase. Threatened by the American industry, the watchmakers built large mechanised factories to produce thousands of standardised timepieces. Meanwhile, our founders Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet decided to follow their convictions and to craft unique pieces, most of which were equipped with complications. This original philosophy still guides us today. We are the oldest Manufacture still owned by the founding families. Thanks to this independence, we are free to trace our own path, and we have chosen to be guided by a longterm vision. We perpetuate and pass on traditional craftsmanship to the next generations, while constantly reinventing ourselves and making uncompromising choices. Our aim is not only to create extraordinary watches, but to foster the numerous talents in the company. Our strength is the people.

What plans do you have or are you developing to draw visitors to the museum, and especially in the case of Middle Eastern clients / fans of the brand? Since the beginning of the project, our dream has been to offer each visitor an unforgettable experience. A guide will accompany the visitors and they will be in connection with our craftsmen, in a journey rhythmed by playful and didactic animations. I enjoy travelling to the Middle East, mainly because the people of this region are still deeply attached to family values, friendship, human relations and have a wonderful sense of hospitality. In our Musée Atelier we share this sensitivity to human qualities, the tour is rhythmed by several family histories, as well as masterpieces of design, crafts and technicity, which I am confident will be highly appreciated by our Middle-East visitors. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself that we’d be surprised to hear. I love working on dozens of projects implying various people, including watchmakers, cabinetmakers, collectors, artists, architects, graphic designers, light engineers, museographers, digital specialists, publishers, journalists, guides, filmmakers… all animated by the same energy to create extraordinary projects. I find it highly motivating to see how an idea transforms into reality thanks to people’s enriching input and collaboration. But what fuels my motivation every day is the positive energy given by our clients, collectors, brand aficionados, when they discover and enjoy our projects, and especially our watches. This is the best reward.

Y

ou have been the Dolce&Gabbana global brand ambassador for Alta Moda since 2012, and you’ve also featured in the brand’s first advertising campaign amongst other highlights. Tell us how you feel being part of the D&G family and legacy. I feel very lucky that my friendship with the Designers and their family has endured for over three decades. It is quite rare in the fashion world. It is very rewarding that my role in the company is now more behind-the-scenes, as it gives me lots of opportunities to learn new aspects of the business and to dialogue with clients, business partners and our staff around the world. In March you visited Doha to partake in a D&G photoshoot at Katara Cultural Village where you featured SS20 modest looks suitable for the region. Why should our readers be excited about this particular edit? It is a very personal take on my personal style and therefore gives a glimpse into how I mix-and-match different elements of the collection. Tell us why you love this region in particular. This was actually my first visit to Qatar! Since I was a little girl, I listened to the tales of Arabian Nights, I have always had a fascination for this part of the world and what really makes me fall for the Middle East is the generosity of its people, the richness of their culture, and I’m addicted to the cuisine. You are renowned for your long-standing close relationship with Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. How did you first meet? We became friends 35 years ago after we met at a disco in Milan where all the cool kids hung out. From then on, we’ve bonded over our mutual love for music, dancing and fashion of course!

What does a typical day in the life of Marpessa look like? Before anything I’m a mother first so I make sure that my teenage daughter starts her day with a healthy breakfast and that we end our day having quality time together or at least a chat! In between there are lots of phone calls, getting used to google meetings, brainstorming with our team and I can’t wait to start travelling again! As an icon of Mediterranean femininity you have earned the title of ‘The Catwalk Contessa’ after lighting up the runways of many major fashion houses. How do you feel about such an accolade? Being Dutch I always find it quite ironic that I’m considered an ‘Icon of Mediterranean femininity’. I guess having lived in Italy and Spain for so many years rubbed off on me! You believe that the Alta Moda brand is one of the sustainable realities in this rapidly changing world. Tell us how integral this ongoing initiative is and why. Alta Moda is not a brand, it’s a philosophy, a way of life. From its conception to the delivery of an order it is a long process which involves not only the dedication and patience of the client, but the dedication and love for detail and perfection of all the people involved in creating such a one-of-a-kind piece. Alta Moda is truly unique as it offers wearable art that will last a lifetime and sustains a small industry of expert artisans whose craft and knowledge was on the verge of being lost. This process starts with the Designers and the “vendeur” listening to the client’s wishes and getting to know the individual well. The Designers then translate all this information into their own unique vision, which then goes into the expert hands of the pattern cutter, the “premiere”, the seamstresses and the embroiderers, who at the same time are passing on their knowledge to a new generation of artisans.

A few years ago your daughter accompanied you on the runway at the Dolce & Gabbana show during Milan Fashion Week. How did that feel? It was a very emotional experience for both of us. For me it was extra special as this was the first time I walked the runway as a protective mother and not as a model interpreting the Designers’ vision! It was beautiful to see the heart-warming response of the audience who witnessed an inter-generational fashion show for the first time. I have always been very hesitant about introducing my daughter to the world of fashion; especially at such a tender age! People sort of automatically assume that she will follow me in my footsteps. Not that I would be against it if she would, but only if she truly has a genuine interest and passion, not because she wants to be like me or become famous, otherwise she will be set up for disappointment and always be compared to me. In your spare time, what do you enjoy doing the most? Spending time with my daughter, decorating, restoring furniture and discovering places I don’t know yet.

I’ve always wondered

what it must be like to stay at the Mondrian Doha. When you see it square on from outside, you are mesmerised by the architectural achievement that is a falcon sitting spread eagled in her nest. Few hotel exteriors are as arresting as this. This hotel is as awesome architecturally on the outside as it is daring in design on the inside. All of which is a tribute to the creative vision of Marcel Wanders. Staying at the Mondrian is all about having an experience. It is not a purely utilitarian layover hotel but a place to be, to refresh, to let the mind wander and unleash the soul. Entering it for the first time had the feeling of entering a post-modern art gallery. It is bright and spacious with a preponderance of white marble but a lack of straight walls. The curved sides and tessellated ceiling plus the criss-cross mirrors all reflect light and vastness to play with the sense of space around you. It’s often been described to me in the context of Lewis Carroll’s seminal children’s book, Alice in Wonderland, where the little girl wanders into something wonderful yet unreal. The lobby alone

lacks reason or meaning but it doesn’t need to offer either and that I think is the point. Observing the gold flecks dance throughout the infrastructure of the lobby protruding off the walls seemed devoid of an obvious explanation, but I realised that I’m still applying an all too square real-world mentality to the place, so it was time to check in! This was a strange and new experience because it was the first time I had checked-in somewhere since the Covid-19 virus unleashed itself on the world. Signs on the floor reminded customers to keep their social distance and staff wore masks. Biosecurity was well practiced at the hotel. For example, I was given a programmed key card which not only worked for entering my room but also for lift access. By tapping the card on the lift panel, it knew where my hotel room was and which floor to elevate me to. They have embraced technological advances available to them which keep guests safe. The room had some unique touches. It absolutely did not feel like a typical, standard hotel room that is easily forgettable and looks like dozens of others you may have stayed in. Mondrian bedroom is a work of art. The entire wall is a mural of Doha iconography, the furniture is ornate and the technology is modern. There was a swivel armchair in front of a glass top table which was lit from a very low hanging lamp that hung from the ceiling with a vase covering that had an incredibly intricate pattern. Rather than a poky bathroom, it was more of a long wet room that ran adjacent to the bedroom and occupied the same length. The toilet was modestly hidden in its own partition leaving the wash basin, shower and bath all open in a long continuous walk-through. The egg shaped bathtub was absolutely huge and as I looked up I could see a decadent chandelier offering mood lighting during my soak. The windows filled the far side of the room letting in inspirational views and a panorama of the West Bay skyline on one side through to the lagoon and the luscious golf course to the other. The Mondrian boasts among the best restaurants in the city though I could not enjoy them during my stay because of the nationwide closure during the Coronavirus pandemic. That didn’t stop me enjoying their culinary offerings. In addition to the in-room dining service that they have always offered, they are also letting guests order from the taste-togo menu. This means for example that you can order a burger from the Hudson Tavern, a wood fire pizza from their exclusive range, a sweet treat from EllaMia or sumptuous sushi from Morimoto. My decision was to order in from a place that serves the best sushi in Qatar. A chef there once told me that it’s flown in from Japan three times a week. This Japanese restaurant was awarded Restaurant of the Year 2018 at the Fact Dining Awards and though you can’t beat being there, the room service they delivered definitely was the next best thing. The takoyaki (octopus) rolls were simply sensational. The all-purpose bedside remote control lets you adjust all settings; temperature, lighting, sound and vision. Connected Bluetooth lets you play your own music in surround sound so you can hear it anywhere in the bedroom or bathroom. The additions of hand sanitizer added necessary comfort and staff were fiercely adhering to the safety guidelines. This is a hotel like no other. Chic, stylish and a step into a space where the imagination can run wild and be indulged.

AFTERNOON DELIGHT As life in quarantine continues, we started looking for reasons to celebrate anything and everything. We found a sweet deal at EllaMia and decided we could definitely use this for a virtual date with our friends.

A

fter a few months of staying inside, our interactions with others have had to become more creative and now with EllaMia we found a way to have a virtual tea-party with friends! Collectively, we decided to order our afternoon tea packages from EllaMia, at the Mondrian Doha, so we could enjoy the same delicious treats simultaneously over zoom, to give the feeling of being together. Ever since EllaMia launched, it has been a firm favourite for beautiful afternoon teas and sweet treats, making it the obvious choice for our virtual event. The Taste to Go initiative has been a blessing for many, as we are

not missing out on the wonderful food Mondrian has to offer. EllaMia delivery service was flawless, arriving exactly at 3pm for us to receive the order from the lobby. The lovely lady who delivered to us was taking all the precautions needed, with her gloves and mask, and greeted us with warmth and friendliness, showing that EllaMia’s hospitality extends much further than Mondrian’s doors. Three of the iconic black and white EllaMia boxes held all the goods perfectly, no crushed cakes or flattened sandwiches, which can always be a fear with delivery! The bonus box contained a cookie and cupcake decorating kit that came with four cookies, four cupcakes, three different coloured buttercreams


and a selection of toppings that can only be described as heavenly. It was a brilliant addition to the package, perfect for any occasion - be it on zoom with the girls or indeed something to enjoy with the kids! The tea selection itself was extensive with the perfect amount of food for two. A handwritten note was a lovely addition to create a personalised feeling, as though you were dining in the hotel. Laying the table for our virtual tea party looked like a scene from Alice in Wonderland with creative colours and food styling from the chef. The selection of their carefully curated menu included; the classic egg & mayo burger in a black bun; simple yet mouthwatering. The twist to the standard cheese sandwich, where the cloudy soft green and orange bread was wrapped in cheese. The zesty salmon on the buttered crunchy bruschetta bread was beautifully prepared. It goes without saying; there was nothing left on the plate once we had finished. The pastries, which are always a highlight of EllaMia, were a mix of sumptuous desserts we couldn’t keep away from. One-bite crusty strawberry tarts, decadently rich chocolate brownie and fresh lemon tarts added a whole new dimension to the experience, leaving you feeling perfectly satisfied. When you speak about a complete package, EllaMia’s afternoon tea brings home the cake (or, in this instance, brings it home for us!). Mondrian Doha promises to deliver the same quality you would get at the hotel and we could not ask for more.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. I am a digital leader and innovator; I like to take an idea, shape it, evolve it and make it come to life, and create value for the consumer in a meaningful way. I love to learn and I have a really curious nature. You are an intrapreneur, public speaker and co-founder of “RollsRoyce Whispers”, the world’s most exclusive Member’s Club. Tell us about your journey since joining Rolls-Royce Motor Cars in 2017, and your focus on digitizing the marque. My passion for the automotive sector really started when I joined the BMW Group back in 2008. I was based in Austria and worked as a Project Manager helping to facilitate all Aftersales communication. It was there that I oversaw the website re-launch and really fell in love with the digital world. I moved to Rolls-Royce Motor Cars as Head of Digital Platform Development and Innovation, and it was here that the idea and concept for Whispers started to take shape. Whispers has been developed in close collaboration with our clients and has become the most exclusive member’s club in the world. Whispers is a digital gateway to a curated world of luxury, designed to Inspire Greatness for Rolls-Royce clients around the world. What inspired you to co-found and formulate this concept? Within Rolls-Royce, there is a department called the ‘Private Office’ which maintains one-to-one relationships with our clients. So we knew that due to clients’ highly mobile, international lifestyles, they have been seeking a means to have more regular personal involvement with the marque – that’s more experiences, more access, and more immersion in the luxury world that is available to Rolls-Royce as the world’s leading luxury brand. They wanted something different from Rolls-Royce – something above and beyond, and that was the starting point of our journey with Whispers. How do you work in close collaboration with clients to evolve Whispers as an application? Thanks to the Private Office, we have a very special relationship with our clients. We communicate with them, listen to them and develop ideas based on their wants and needs. One of the most important features of Whispers is that it offers clients the opportunity to liaise securely with fellow Rolls-Royce clients, the Chief Executive and members of the Board of Rolls-Royce, to share ideas and networks, business opportunities and social contacts. This is a really invaluable feature of the Application. Members can enjoy an expedition to Antarctica, a chance to build their own personal racetrack, as well as enjoying a private performance by a world-class orchestra. Taking its name from the first Range Rover prototypes, the Range Rover Velar broadened the Range Rover portfolio with a statement reductionist design and a technology-rich interior.

RANGE ROVER HISTORICAL OVERVIEW Today marks 50 years since the first Range Rover was revealed, but the story goes back even further. During the mid 1960s, in a bid to revolutionise the growing 4x4 leisure market, the Rover car company’s engineering chief for new vehicle projects, Charles Spencer ‘Spen’ King (nephew of the founders of Land Rover), hatched a plan to combine the comfort and on-road ability of a Rover saloon with the offroad ability of a Land Rover. Development of the first 100-inch station wagon prototype began during the late 1960s, with the first model being released to the world’s media to critical acclaim in 1970. Its blend of ability – motorway cruising, off-roading, and even towing in style and comfort – ensured its instant popularity. The original Classic model was cited as an ‘exemplary work of industrial design’ when it became the first vehicle to be displayed at the world famous Louvre Museum in Paris in 1971.

The Range Rover Fifty will be available in both standard and long wheelbase body designs with customers able to choose from four carefully curated exterior colours; Carpathian Grey, Rosello Red, Aruba, and Santorini Black. In extremely limited numbers, Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations is also offering the Range Rover Fifty in one of three Heritage exterior solid paints reproduced from the original Range Rover paint palette; Tuscan Blue, Bahama Gold and Davos White. A range of powertrain options will be available; petrol, diesel and even a plug-in hybrid P400e version.* Now in its fourth generation with over a million sold in its lifetime, the Range Rover is the ultimate expression of luxury. THE RANGE ROVER FAMILY After three decades at the top of the luxury SUV sector, the Range Rover became a family in 2005 with the launch of the Range Rover Sport, a vehicle which combines the luxury and capability of the larger Range Rover with a sporty and engaging driving character. In 2010, the compact Range Rover Evoque made its debut, aimed at a younger and more 80

The first generation Range Rover (1970-1996) was originally only available as a two door when it went on sale in 1970. During its 26 year lifespan the Classic continued to evolve with the introduction of the four-door model in 1981 and an automatic gearbox in 1982. The first diesel Range Rover arrived in 1986. The second generation Range Rover known as the P38A arrived in 1994 and was instantly recognisable thanks to its familiar silhouette, floating roof, clamshell bonnet, practical split tailgate and continuous waistline; all of which continue to this day. The vehicle also displayed an even more luxurious interior without compromising on its on-road ability and offroad capability. It also featured enhanced height-adjustable suspension as well as a 2.5-litre diesel and 3.9 and 4.6-litre versions of the V8 petrol, providing greater performance than ever before. The third generation Range Rover (2001-2012) delivered a wealth of improvements on all predecessors during its 11 year period. Engineering innovations included a stiffer monocoque body (replacing the traditional 4x4 ladder frame) and fully independent suspension with interconnected air springs (at the time nearly all 4x4s had rigid axles). The interiors of these vehicles were inspired by high-end yachts, fine furniture and first class airline seats, providing more space and luxury. In 2012, the fourth generation and most recent Range Rover debuted. It was the first SUV to feature lightweight allaluminium construction, saving 420kg in weight compared to its predecessor. Featuring a wealth of new off-road innovations such as automatic Terrain Response™ 2 and All-Terrain Progress Control, it has evolved to include efficient new electrified Ingenium engines, a plug-in hybrid electric version and innovative infotainment and safety technologies. For the last five years the Range Rover SVAutobiography has been at the pinnacle of the model line-up, with the most powerful and refined vehicles in Range Rover’s history. WANDERLUST, WANDER (NOT SO) OFTEN! MISS OHLALA MUSES ABOUT THE NEXT STAMP IN HER PASSPORT AND THE IMPORTANCE OF ESCAPISM AT HOME. The only view you have had recently is the one outside your window. It’s easy to feel cramped, your longing for travel stifled by your equally strong urge to protect public health. There has been a way to travel while you’re stuck indoors though. All you need is the right book to lead your imagination on wild adventures to places far beyond the confines of your couch. We are itching with wanderlust and longing for an adventure, but have nowhere to go...yet! Throughout these strange, unprecedented weeks and months of lockdown and isolation we’ve noticed that social media has proved itself to be both a blessing and a curse. In the words of Jamiroquai ‘Virtual Reality’ has become the new ‘normal’. We’ve had to work hard to maintain relationships, employment and hold onto the hope that eventually these virtual experiences would once again become reality. Although encountering VR traveling experiences, through a series of 360° videos hasn’t quashed our thirst for wanderlust, it has helped to break away from mundane day-to-day life. The news feed and timehop memories which popped up with images of sparkling, azure blue waters lapping at our feet or palm trees adorned with hammocks have merely mocked us. Chic, city breaks we had taken with friends as we binged on as many landmarks and experiences as we could have only dominated our nostalgic longing. Beautiful moments and memories captured before the world changed have seemed all but a distant memory, but there is light at the end of that tunnel! Frequent updates about airports opening up again for tourism have me dusting off my passport. Standing now almost at the end of this extreme journey we can start to dream again, to plan and grasp opportunities with both hands... thoroughly washed or liberally lathered in sanitizer of course! During the most difficult hours or days we will all have had a destination in mind that epitomises the new ‘normal’. A place which we have been 82

craving for months like an indulgent, fondant covered cupcake. Could it be that caution is going to be thrown to the wind and once dreamed about , ‘Bucket list’ destinations will be top of your agenda? There’s certainly no holding back with our passports, that’s for sure! Or, are you like me and you crave minutiae such as the feeling of crisp, white hotel sheets on your skin, sharing jugs of fruity elixirs alfresco with sand still clinging to your feet and the sound of the sea crashing and lapping around you? I long for the Mediterranean hum created by crickets which may go unheard by so many and in so many other destinations. Those first steps off the aeroplane will signify that reality reigns supreme, and instead of going everywhere virtually we will virtually be able to go everywhere! For those of us who have been blessed with the ability to move on from these challenging times it’s about making the most of our means and opportunities. Whether that be high end jet-setting or low key reunions with our nearest and dearest in our favourite bars and restaurants. Make experiences, make legendary moments!
