With summer getaways high on our agendas and wedding season approaching perfecting that outfit has never been more important. While the dark depths of winter can feel like a gloomy place, it is the perfect excuse to look ahead to what the year ahead has to offer. It can be tricky to get it right, but we’re here to help you bring those legs out of hibernation. Kick back, relax and peruse through the fashion staples to be seen in this season. And while another few weeks of brisk weather and yet more storms poses a slightly bleak start, we’re already eagerly anticipating our new wardrobe. The good news? Spring kicks off officially this 20 March, and we have been ogling Spring Summer 20 Collections intently. Just as we were mourning the loss of sunshine and rediscovering our fondness for a cardigan, along came fashion week to indulge us in a whole host of drool-worthy fair-weather pieces as brands showcased SS20 in style. However, in this new decade, throwaway trends are becoming increasingly outdated, and we are all looking for clothes that will have a lasting impact within a capsule wardrobe. The Spring Summer 2020 runways were notably more commercial than usual, with a focus on classic legacy buys rather than whimsical and artistic creations, which could potentially fall into the fad or impractical category. We have you covered with the lingo too in our A to Z of fashion that will have you ‘vocab savvy’ in all things, well... fashion! Not to mention our lashings (’gettit?’) of beauty coverage since we are always about that glow-up life. Our Beauty Insight this month is with the new face of Givenchy Beauty, Blanca Padilla where we talk everything from the House that has gave us couture collections to bold beauty products. Speaking of all things beautiful, I’m wishing you all a fabulous Mother’s Day and lots of kind affirmations for this month. Now, get out there and wear your crown high...like your heels.

Cis for Camisole

In the 19th century a camisole was a waist length undergarment worn over a corset. Generally it had broad straps, and tied at the upper edge with a drawstring. Often it was trimmed with lace or eyelet embroidery. In modern usage, the term may refer to any undergarment worn over a brassiere and ending at the waist. Blouses or tops that are cut in a style similar to the historic camisole are called camisole tops.

Dis for D’orsay Shoe

Refers to any shoe that has a closed heel and toe but which is cut down to the sole at the sides. It can be made with a heel of any type and any style of vamp (front). The style is one of several fashions named after the Count d’Orsay, a fashionable dandy living Paris in the mid-1800s.

Eis for Empire Waist

Location of the waistline just under the bustline. The name of this style comes from the high-waisted styles popular during the reign of the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte (1804-1814).

Fis for Fashion Tribes

Current fashion has moved away from one universal style for all and instead various segments of the consuming public, especially the young, are likely to dress in fashions that show that they belong to a particular group or a style tribe.

Gis for Gathers

A to Z of FASHION We’ve plucked terminology that you can find all over the fashion scene - season in, season out - for you to impress your style tribe this SS20. 22

www.ohlalamag.net

Ais for A-line

Style line for apparel in which the dress fits at the shoulder or the skirt at the waist and gradually flares out to a wider hemline, causing it to resemble the letter A. The earliest A-line designs were created by Christian Dior in the 1950s.

Bis for Batwing

Sleeve that fits closely at the wrist but widens to be very full under the arm. From the back, the sleeve resembles a cape. Its name comes from its resemblance to the wing of a bat or its similarity to a type of coat worn in the late 1800s that had a cape-like sleeve.

A means of distributing fullness in some part of a garment by sewing a loose row of stitches, pulling the thread, and sliding the fabric along the thread to make soft folds in order to decrease the width of the fabric. n shirring three or more rows of gathers are placed parallel lines to achieve a decorative effect while also manipulating fullness.

His for Hems

The lower edge of a part of a garment that has been finished off with some type of sewing to cover the raw edge. Among the more common types of hems are: plain hem that is turned up and sewn into place; rolled hem used on sheer or delicate fabrics and rolled up by hand into a narrow hem that is sewn with small hand stitches; and faced hem, which is finished with a piece of fabric sewn to the bottom of the garment edge and then turned up to the underside and sewn into place.

STYLE

Kis for Knit

A knit is a type of fabric that’s created using a technique where yarn is looped around. As compared to woven fabrics, a knit tends to be more malleable and stretches more easily.

Lis for Loafer

Moccasin-style classic slip on shoe that has a slotted strap at the front. The strap is stitched to the front (vamp) of the shoe. If the strap has a coin inserted in the slot, the shoe is called a penny loafer. If it has a tassel at the front, it is a tassel-top loafer. Sometimes a metal chain is fastened to the strap, and the shoe is called a chain loafer.

Mis for Macrame

A hand technique for making small pieces of fabric and trimmings by knotting from two to four or more yarns, strings, or cords into a variety of decorative patterns. Macram™ has been fashionable periodically and is most often seen in belts, handbags, vests, or as trimmings. Sometimes beads are incorporated into the design of the fabric.

SIMONE ROCHA

I think there is beauty in everything. What ‘normal’ people perceive as ugly, I can usually see something of beauty in it.” — Alexander McQueen

Iis for Influencers

Influencers, or sometimes referred to as key opinion leaders, are a group of individuals that have risen among the ranks (mostly through social media) based on the number of followers they have and many of which have become brand ambassadors for a variety of fashion labels.

Jis for Jacquard

Jacquard fabrics have raised patterns that are woven into the fabric, instead of patterns that are merely printed on. Depending on the types of yarns used, a jacquard can vary from minimallooking variations to more ostentatious designs with the use of metallic yarns

Nis for Niche

Niche fashion caters to only a specific group in society. Types of niche fashion can include gender-blurring fashion, vegan clothing and even haute couture—all catering to a small segment of the community at large.

O f for Oxford

i A basic shoe style that either laces shut or is closed with some other fastening. Details of styling and cut will vary. Originally, the term was used by shoemakers to distinguish between low cut shoes and boots. Today the major distinction is in the fact that the shoe has a closing.

Pis for Pagoda Sleeve

A sleeve that is shaped much like an Asian building called a pagoda. Like a pagoda, the sleeve is narrow at the top where it fits the upper arm closely, then gradually flares out to become wide at the bottom. The shape is similar to a funnel, and so this sleeve style may also be called a funnel sleeve.

Qis for Quality Fashions fade, style is eternal.” — Yves Saint Laurent

The mark of true luxury fashion is the quality. This refers to the way that the garment is made from the creation of the fabric to the final finishing of the piece. A quality piece of work is one that could potentially last for a very long time.

Ris for Ruching

Current fashion descriptions use the term ruching to refer to clothing with large areas of fullness gathered in to form a rippled effect. Historically, ruching was a trimming made by pleating bands of fabric and stitching the pleats in place. These bands were sewn onto various parts of the garment.

NINA RICCI

A basic dress style that has simple, straight lines and does not fit close to the body. Very popular in the 1960s and in other periods when unfitted styles are popular. One innovation in this style in the 1960s was the incorporation of a diagonal dart running from the side seam to the bustline. In comparison, a sheath is a simple, straight, but fitted dress in which vertical darts, bust darts, and shaping from side seams provide the fit.

STYLE

Tis for Tie Dye

A method of decorating a garment or fabric by tying string or other material around pre-selected areas in order to prevent dye from being absorbed by these areas. The unprotected area takes up the dye, the tied area does not. To get multicolored effects, the fabric can be tied in other areas and dipped in another colored dye. This process can be repeated as often as desired.

Uis for Unstructured

A garment that is unstructured means that it has no structural design support such as boning and padding. An unstructured garment, when hung, should drop instead of appearing stiff.

Vis for Vintage

Fashion items that are at least 20 years old are considered vintage. The act of buying vintage can be seen as the most environmentally friendly way of buying fashion. And if something has been in pristine condition for the past 20 years or so, it would probably last much longer.

Wis for Watteau Back

The back of a garment in which box pleats are placed at the center back and the fabric released by these pleats falls loosely to the bottom of the garment. The name of this style derives from Jean Antoine Watteau, a French artist of the 18th century, in whose paintings women wore dresses with this design feature. The name was not applied to these designs until the 19th century.Today the style continues to be popular, especially in nightgowns and robes.

Xis for X

In fashion, X denotes a collaboration between two brands. It is incorrect to refer to the X as ‘by’, since in a collaboration, there shouldn’t be one party that’s more significant than the other.

Yis for Yoke

A yoke is a shaped pattern piece which forms part of a garment, usually fitting around the neck and shoulders, or around the hips to provide support for looser parts of the garment, such as a gathered skirt or the body of a shirt.

Zis for Zip

A zip is a fastener formerly known as a clasp locker, is a commonly used device for binding the edges of an opening of fabric or other flexible material, such as on a garment or a bag. 28

Presenting a nostalgic nod to the Sixties Rami Al Ali’s collection is full of retro-inspired pieces that narrate a

tale of two contrasting aesthetics, femininity and rebellion. The dreamy compilation of looks highlights the diversity and style evolution synonymous with the era. A-line dresses baring full-body skirts and tight bodices present an ode to femininity with modest necklines and overthe-knee hemlines affirming sophistication. Tailored dresses appear fit–to-form with streamline sheath dresses that gracefully graze the floor. Contrasting the modest profile are short mini dresses with voluminous skirts and sculptural ruffles that convey an edgier aesthetic and reflect a look of confidence. Candy shades of lemon soul, summer breeze, pastel lilac, powder blush and sky blue capture the playful and girly nature of the collection. Elegant illusion necklines and scallop-edged tops add dimension while soft tulle textiles add a touch of whimsy. The collections clear consideration of craftsmanship through the incorporation of premium fabrics and intricate embroidery reveal the true marking of a Rami Al Ali signature. FASHIONABLY MODEST With the continuous love of the Arabic fashion industry, our local editor ANUSHAY KHAN met the man behind the design, NAJA SAADE and delved into his world of charm and glamour.

When we look at Naja Saade’s bespoke regal

designs with lavish cuts and inspiration infused design from everything around him, you would never believe the man behind this pretty picture. Naja, a minimalistic young man who is discovering his love for the holy grail of fashion is as human as a designer could get. I don’t think he truly realises the talent that he possesses or the mountains that he has already climbed. In Naja Saade’s latest fashion show in Qatar he showcased a mix of his latest collections Rebirth and Spirit of the Time and I was in awe of the ‘simple’ way his inspiration and process flowed. I say ‘simple’ because of the technique and thought that went into it and how casually Naja spoke about spending countless hours in the studio and finding symmetry in everything around him, only to translate it into a pattern and eventually fashion. Specialising in bridal and evening wear, Naja is someone that exacerbates a positive aura around him and I was absolutely mesmerised. I was enthusiastic to meet the man behind the swish designs of the brand Naja Saade, named after the designer himself, and had a stereotypical image of him formulated in my head. I had received the latest collection’s sneak peek just a few hours before I met him and I already had a series of questions transcribed. I sat at St.Regis’ beautifully decorated lobby and waited for Naja to join me for a quick cup of coffee and gush about his craft. What I expected was a suited-and-booted guy with a flaunty attitude, however, I was met by a man dressed in chic casual wear and a smile that put me at ease instantly. We exchanged greetings and I was surprised to actually see him as excited as I was to interview him. I knew all about his schedule and thanked him for fitting us in between appointments to which he simply retorted that ‘Ohlala is a huge deal, knowing that the Qatari market appreciates seeing more of Naja Saade published locally’... Well, hello humility and my now favourite person in this industry.

We spoke about how he was the first in his family to actually pursue a career in not just fashion but, something creative altogether. Naja laughed about the fact that he was actually a radiologist and the monotony of life got to him to the extent that he realised that the ‘dream’ he had when he was younger was truly achievable if he gave it his all. The loss of ambition made him realise that he could not live without creativity and that was all that he wished to surround himself in. He came to his fashionable senses and pursued his love for the fashion world by enrolling to learn more about fashion and everything about it. Therefore, in 2012, the brand was born. I’d call Naja a chameleon, given his love and obsession for experimenting with colours. In his previous collections, I hardly found a few pieces of black and when I did, I was stunned by the reflection of the galaxy on them. I was already enamoured by his genius creations and their simplicity that if any given day if you asked me to wear any piece by Naja Saade, I would pick one with my eyes closed.

“Naja laughed about the fact that he was actually a radiologist and the monotony of life got to him to the extent that he realised that the ‘dream’ he had when he was younger was truly achievable if he gave it his all.” The humble man that he is, he made sure that he constantly mentioned his team and their efforts every time he spoke about his business. Never once did he even try to take the entire credit of the designs that I was fawning over. He spoke about the little things that make the collection stand out and the length he and his team go to in order to achieve that. Whether it is his favourite jumpsuit from his Maharani collection or his Qatari clients’ love for his style, this guy knows exactly how to treat his audience. He spoke of his own culture with a new zest and I saw his love for Lebanon reflect in his body language. A suddenly excited Naja talked about how his childhood and everything around him inspired him to achieve the status he has today. Believing that fashion and art can give a country an identity, an image in the world, Naja Saade is what I believe to be a creative genius with the most humblest of souls. C E L E B R AT I N G W O M E N GETTING TO KNOW HISSA HADDAD

If you had randomly showed me a few designs by HH, I would have never guessed that it was a brand in Qatar. The luxuriously modern shoes with the intricately beautiful designs had me going through her website for the entire collection instantly. It was absolutely necessary to meet the lady behind the brand! We decided to meet at Mandarin Oriental Lounge and I almost had a hard time finding Hissa. Sitting quietly at her table with her notebook, laptop, and bag surrounding her as she ate lunch, I was not expecting a simple AVAILABLE AT DECODE, LAGOONA MALL woman, with the most beautiful skin to receive me as her guest and instantly make me comfortable with her warm welcome. She first made sure I was settled in with my drink, only to excuse herself for the lunch on her table. Turns out, Ms. Haddad, due to her increasingly busy schedule, had given in to the intermittent fasting culture and was having her first proper meal of the day.

FOR THE LOVE OF SHOES!

Hissa had such a zen vibe around her which made it easy for me to keep the conversation 36

Preparing for International Women’s Day, Anushay Khan had the pleasure of sitting down with Hissa Haddad, the founder of the luxury footwear brand HH.

flowing for the next hour. What I expected to be an hour of listening to someone talk about how fabulous and intuitive they were, I was lured in by Hissa’s pleasant nature as she humbly spoke about her background and genuine love for shoes. An engineer who found herself looking at local brands in London and analysing them on the spot, Hissa felt like she needed to explore this creative side of hers. With her natural eye-for-detail, she found herself looking more closely at designs than a normal shopper would; sometimes some design elements would just not feel right whereas other times the finishing of the shoe looked like it could be better and the right fit was always missing.

THE ENTREPRENEUR

Exploring this talent did not come easy, however… Even with the support of her friends and family, Hissa found a gap in the market between the right type of PR and her brand, urging her to go all out and take this matter into her own hands too. From design to production

to manufacturing; she was well aware of her business needs. She saw how cost-effective some opportunities could be and always made sure that she was in line with the bigger picture - the one that included expansion and international acclaim. Even as Hissa spoke about her passion, I found her to be a calm and reserved person which probed me to ask her more and go beyond the entrepreneur that she was. A few light questions ultimately revealed a true love for books that ranged from informative ones to Arabic novels and their poetic nature. It made absolute sense for her to be drawn towards the poetry, given her own energy and her calm nature. Not once did she get over-excited or talk fast or loudly to explain her point which made it all the easier to lose track of time.

FAMILY LIFE

When she spoke about her love for her family, there was an ease in her smile that I had not seen in the past thirty minutes. With a twinkle in her eye as she spoke of her father and her exasperated sighs as she spoke about stealing moments between her life for a quick escape to the spa had me respect her all the more. Her priority was clear; valuing friends and family any day over everything else in life. She revitalised herself from their energy and garners the power to move forth with an otherwise difficult day, and that is simply how things work for her. And when nothing makes sense and she feels like she hasn’t given a single moment to herself all day, an episode of Friends gives her the right fix.

THE HUMANITARIAN

My favourite bit, however, was when I saw the humanitarian in her who was all about empowering women. Hissa spoke with zeal as she explained her point of view to me; how a woman is the core of any home; the influence in a child’s life and how she can turn the waves and 38

www.ohlalamag.net

direction the entire household towards a positive route. Encourage a woman to plant a seed and everything will make use of the values that that root disperses; the man will be encouraged to do better, the daughter has an exceptional example and the son learns by the example of how a unit works together. Hissa spoke about wanting to start something that encourages women to work from home if the opportunity arises and to go a step further afield than getting an education. She wishes to start a new venture which would see women as the leader in any industry they wished to step in. Now, every woman can certainly benefit from walking through life in a pair of these sculptured manifestos! Hissa Haddad footwear is available at Salam Stores. @hissahaddad

Amongst these was the White Rose high jewellery suite - a magnificent creation that harks back to a unique and royal gift from Garrard’s rich heritage. Inspired by the setting of the Cullinan V diamond for Queen Mary in 1911, the White Rose is centred around a pear-shape diamond surrounded by a series of radiating white gold lines. Showcasing the versatility of Garrard designs , the diamond centre can be detached and worn as an elegant and delicate brooch. Sitting alongside was the Kensington suite , consisting of a necklace, earrings and ring, all magnificently set with yellow and white Asscher and round cut diamonds. Also on display was the Albemarle Abstract suite, comprising over 30 carats of white diamonds; an exception creation and a true embodiment of extraordinary heritage and stories that the House continues to represent. In an international exclusive preview, Garrard was also delighted to showcase its new 2020 collection, Aloria. Guests had the chance to purchase exquisite jewels bearing Garrard’s quintessentially British hallmark of history, craft and quality.

ICO S S Under the expert eye of Claire Choisne, eight new Question Mark necklaces are added to Boucheron’s Signature High Jewelry collection

The Question Mark necklace first appeared in the Parisian High Jewelry history at Boucheron in 1879. Here it is again, brought to light by its Creative Director, who wanted to put a personal take on this timeless icon to establish it as one of the Maison’s recognised and unmistakable signature creations. The original necklace combines simplicity with opulence: the simplicity of the clean lines of the circular part that wraps around the neck, the opulence of a main motif, consisting of lotus flowers, bunches of grapes, poppy petals, and even a snake. “The apparent simplicity of the choker and the off-centre motif represented a total break with the subtle harmony commonly found in naturalistic jewelry at that time,” says Claire Choisne. “This stylistic approach, based on asymmetry, profusion and the aesthetics of curved lines, was reinforced by a technical feat that was totally innovative in jewellery: the absence of any clasp, which allowed women, if they so wished, to put on their jewellery alone, without the assistance of another person.” The carefully studied natural motif, the true-to-life shapes and the required flexibility resonate in a Plume de Paon necklace studded with rose-, triangle-, brilliant- and 44

baguette-cut diamonds. The Creative Director wanted the settings, the adjustments and the methods of working precious metal used in the late nineteenth century to be reproduced as faithfully as possible. She also wanted to retain the necklace’s large dimensions. “I love the XL scale of this necklace, which I see as the masterpiece of this collection and which will set the tone for the dimensions of future creations,” says Claire Choisne enthusiastically. Different versions of the Plume de Paon necklace evoke the femininity of pink gold, the soft, moon-like glow of tourmaline or the intoxicating velvetiness of a 10.98-carat, oval-cut Burmese sapphire. The Lierre de Paris necklace, whose emerald-set leaves move, is a powerful demonstration of the technical prowess of the Maison’s workshops. A reinterpretation of a white gold necklace from the Nature Triomphante collection, this striking green version has been accomplished using all the most complex jewellery techniques. The ripple effect, the arrangement, the volume, the movement of the leaves

activated by a switch... all this is in keeping with the spirit of innovation that has always characterised Boucheron, and in keeping with Claire Choisne’s predilection for realism pushed to its extreme. Claire Choisne’s sensibility is also reflected in the Nuage de Fleurs necklace, which features a cluster of hydrangeas. “This is the first flower my daughter gave me, “ says the Creative Director. “I love this flower because it looks simple, almost humble to me.” Each hydrangea petal has been scanned in order to capture the sense of ephemeral nature in the timeless mother-of-pearl relief. A completely new version of the Question Mark, the Gouttes de Perles necklace accentuates the purity of an arabesque with exquisite cultured pearls. While the Feuilles d’Acanthe necklace transforms the symbolic decorative motif into a graceful latticework of sensuously curving yellow gold leaves. This link between plants and architecture can also be seen in the single, unique and striking earring that reflects the contemporary spirit of the collection. Over and above the technical expertise behind its creation, the Question Mark necklace as reinterpreted by Claire Choisne expresses Boucheron’s extraordinary ability to produce High Jewelry creations that combine the spirit of the times with the essence of eternity. CYCLES OF THE MOON The new calendar is based on technology Parmigiani Fleurier developed for an exclusive table clock launched in 2011 and inspired by the restoration of a pocket watch featuring an Arabic calendar. For the first time in Parmigiani Fleurier’s history, the Hijri Perpetual Calendar complication is made available in a wristwatch. In the Muslim world, the calendar is based on the cycles of the moon. The Hijri or Islamic lunar calendar consists of twelve months of 29 or 30 days – depending on the moon phase- and is used to pinpoint the days for Islamic holidays. In contrast to the solar calendar, which is used in the west, the months of the lunar calendar change annually by a difference of -10 to -12 days. As a result, each month always falls on a different season and therefore varies from the Gregorian Calendar. The starting point of Islamic time calculations is the emigration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in the year 622, known as Hijri, and is when the first Muslim community was founded. This new piece features a 44.5 mm timepiece with a platinum case, a slate dial and rotor in platinum. It shows the hours and minutes, and date in Arabic numerals, the name and length of the months in Arabic calligraphy, as well as the abundant and the common years. It also features a moon phase in an aventurine sky and a power reserve of up to 48 hours. As seen in all Parmigiani timepieces, every single component of the movement, even the 46

hidden parts, are decorated by in-house specialists. No components were made of gold. Every detail has been thought of and this stunning timepiece includes Arabic architecture inspired elements- the bridges adopt the shape of growing and shrinking crescent moons and the Rub el Hizb, an Islamic symbol represented by two overlapping squares. In addition, the aesthetic of the Hijri Perpetual Calendar wristwatch is inspired by the purest artistic elements and follows timeless codes often seen in Parmigiani Fleurier collections. The lugs shape remain faithful to the brand’s ethos, designed to be ergonomic and comfortable on the wrist. This world-first is also fitted with a black Hermès alligator strap with a pin buckle. The original development of the timepiece dates back to 1993 with the restoration of a pocket watch by Michel Parmigiani, three years before the creation of the Parmigiani Fleurier brand. This led Mr. Parmigiani to the creation of a table clock featuring a Hijri Calendar in 2011 a world’s first as no lunar calendar had ever been designed to operate continuously. This piece of exception was inspired by his work restoring a simple Hijri Calendar. He also worked on a pocket watch dating back to the end of the 18th or beginning of the 19th Century, which featured a solar calendar translated into Arabic. As usual at Parmigiani Fleurier, further customisation of the model is possible in order to create a one-of-a-kind timepiece.

In 2020, green dials are being showcased

across all the collections. The iconic Miss Audrey and Monsieur Bovet are just two of the many designs adorned in this colour. In many cultures, green is the symbol of hope, luck and growth and Islam was undoubtedly the first to associate green with nature. Today this link symbolises environmental protection. In this respect, what cleaner energy is there than energy that powers a mechanical watch movement or what ecofriendlier approach than storing this energy in a barrel that is able to provide this function for decades, if not centuries. It is therefore entirely in keeping that this colour now appears on BOVET dials.

MONSIEUR BOVET

Since its launch in 2015, Monsieur Bovet has become the symbol of timepieces featuring the iconic Amadéo® convertible case. Its elegance, understated design and two faces make it a fitting timepiece for every moment in the life of the modern man. Over and above an utterly uncompromising aesthetic and finishings, it is powered by a movement that is entirely manufactured in the manufacturer’s workshops. The movement offers seven days’ power reserve, drawing its energy from a single barrel. This extraordinary power reserve demonstrates how BOVET’s technicians and watchmakers have perfectly mastered the art of energy. The guillochage motif on Monsieur Bovet’s two dials is an extension of the Maison BOVET’s symbol since 1822: a lotus flower with twelve petals symbolizing the twelve hours counted on the dials. It is decorated with fine appliqué Arabic numerals.

MISS AUDREY

www.ohlalamag.net

Women have also been given pride of place in the 2020 Collection. As demonstrated by this new edition of the Miss Audrey timepiece. It now features a green guilloché dial, whose starry motif reflects sumptuous shades. This timepiece is also housed in the Amadéo® convertible case, crafted in steel in this instance with a 36-mm diameter. The bezel and the iconic bow are set with white diamonds that beautifully enhance the shimmering dial. The case’s convertible feature allows the timepiece to be worn on the wrist, transformed into a table clock or turned into a majestic pendant without needing to use a tool. To match the dial in perfect harmony, BOVET has designed an original long jade bead necklace that falls to highlight the refinement of the timepiece. Miss Audrey is powered by an automatic movement displaying the date at 6 o’clock.

THE SKILL

BOVET 1822’s craftsmen have once again skillfully combined their talents to create these two pieces. Several months’ development and fine-tuning were required to accomplish the end result. The process that they follow to achieve excellence is extremely demanding. Each dial is guillochéd and then lacquered on a metal plate whose diameter is greater than the finished dial. It is only once the different layers of lacquer have been applied that they carry out the drilling and machining operations. These procedures are extremely delicate yet guarantee the legendary excellence of the dials and timepieces that Maison BOVET 1822 has been manufacturing for almost two centuries.

RICH WITH SHIMMERING WITH EXQUISITE GEMS, POMELLATO PREVIEWS SOME OF ITS MOST PRECIOUS JEWELLERY MASTERPIECES FOR THE FINEST CONNOISSEURS AT QATAR’S DOHA JEWELLERY AND WATCHES EXHIBITION (DJWE).

Masterful in its jewellery savoir-faire, Pomellato is proud to have presented some of its most exquisite pieces ever created at Qatar’s Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition (DJWE). Exalting goldsmithing tradition and sophisticated craftsmanship, Pomellato represents Milanese design with over 48 pieces of brightly coloured gems, meticulous pavé diamonds, and audacious goldsmith genius. BOLD SENSUALITY AND COLOURED GEM EXPERTISE.

Pomellato designed the concept of the prêt-à-porter jewel for the independent woman in the 1960s. More than fifty years later, this concept has evolved, as has its exquisite jewellery savoir-faire. This is evidenced especially in Pomellato’s new high-end masterpieces at Doha, such as the special Sabbia parure designed to be worn separately or in tandem: the shimmering ring, earrings and necklace in white gold with a pavé of emeralds all sourced sustainably from Gemfields, with white and brown diamonds. Flowing from green to white gemstones like a precious waterfall, the ring is carved into a modern rectangle design, then squared on the finger with audacious appeal. with similar colour gradation round up to 168 emeralds and 118 white and brown diamonds. Dangling from the neck in rectangle and circle from a bold white gold chain, a statement-piece necklace boasts 360 emeralds and 146 white and brown diamonds. Sculpted for queens of resplendence, Pomellato also introduces its white gold Iconica choker, entirely covered with diamond pavé for a high-shine finishing touch. Smooth to the touch with gem-setting mastery, the shimmering choker incorporates 1,706 diamonds for a total of 25.8 ct. of true preciousness. A voluptuous 3.9 ct. Brazilian emerald cocktail ring in white gold with 328 white pavé diamonds embracing its bright green central stone, which twist design dances with sensuality. Never to be outdone, magnificent Tango clinks as a necklace with sculpted white gold links, as it combines over 2,920 pavé diamonds for a grand total of 65.3 ct. of sparkling perfection.

POMELLATO 2020 COLLECTIONS AT DJWE

Iconic traits from signature Pomellato collections are evidenced throughout the precious display. Among them, the beloved, ever-iconic Nudo ring in both maxi and classic sizes, each shining brightly with hand-cut deep blue doublets such as London blue topaz, agate, turquoise gemstones and precious diamond pavé. The same Nudo parure is presented in pink quartz and pink chalcedony with brown diamonds. The Nudo sautoirs feature masterful double-sided Clessidra-cut gems, dangling asymmetrically from delicate, often adjustable chains in rose and white gold featuring sky blue topaz with chrysoprase or pink quartz with pink chalcedony and pavé diamonds to add a highshine splash to the necklace, worn doubly or singly around the neck. For a more daywear look, the same colored gems are set onto the Nudo lariat necklace in rose and white gold, with pavé diamonds and an ingenious hidden circular clasp that acts as a feature of the necklace. The brand new Fantina collection includes a voluptuous diamond-edged ring in rose gold or white gold and 61 diamonds, to pair with a cuff bracelet of the same sensualcurves design (133 diamonds) and bold pendant earrings of 134 diamonds, topped off by a spectacular statement piece tear-drop pendant that features 59 diamonds or 150 diamonds set in the white gold version. For two layers that reveal both Pomellato’s goldsmith and diamond prowess, the Milanese maison presents a parure of rose gold in the form of an Iconica two-layer ring – one of gold and one of 32 diamond pavé gems. To complement, a shining solid gold bangle accentuated by a small 18 diamond circle accent, or, in a reverse design, with the pavé diamonds set into the entirety of the bracelet with 251 pavé diamonds. Instead or as well, Iconica drop earrings shimmer from the ears encrusted with 136 pavé diamonds, to complete the look.

With its Sabbia collection, Pomellato was exquisitely inspired this year, producing several pieces that play on the volume of its simple circle or rectangle design. The new bracelet with mesh gold links seems to almost recall a precious ‘chain mail’ design, graced with asymmetric circles of precious pavé, as 539 brown, white and black diamonds render the wearer truly unforgettable. To match, the choker necklace incorporates 970 diamonds of similar hues with a sassy circle clasp design that drops behind the neck. Four circles of diamond pavé are encrusted atop the finger in a fantastic ring with 111 diamonds in total. As complement, the necklace version combining white, brown and black diamond circles and rectangles can be singly, doubled or even tripled around the neck, depending on the look. For more musicality in movement, the sautoir pairs with any other piece from the collection, featuring 225 brown, white and black diamonds held by multi-sized chain links of eccentricity. Spectacular drop pendant earrings low from the lobes with 606 black and brown diamonds that fade to white – almost like precious charcoal dipped in the snow. With Tango, Pomellato demonstrates its gem-setting mastery in a white gold ring with 126 smoothly-set diamonds. For the wrist and neck, a matching bracelet (915 diamonds) and necklace (2021 diamonds), with shimmering pavé set into each diamond chain masterpiece. Revealing the colors of its true nature, Pomellato displays brightly colored bracelets, each set with 744 gemstones of either chromo tourmaline, red spinel, blue sapphire, purple sapphire, ruby or emeralds.

“She takes it a step further by imagining an union where the juxtaposed diamonds celebrate endless love.” With Kate Moss and Sylvia Hoeks, Messika celebrates the perfect union between the pear, emerald and oval cuts of the My Twin collection. As our muses, they add a finishing touch to these iconic pieces for a striking yet delicate result. Messika’s renown My Twin collection, suggests a new way of sealing one’s love, via the unexpected union of different cut diamonds. The different stones sit in contrast and harmony with each other. The pear cut diamond, which is both sensual and dazzling, marries with the emerald cut, which is more stylised and hypnotic, or even the oval cut, which is sweet and gentle. In the paired version, My Twin reinterprets the classic Toi & Moi in an architectural way where the emerald and pear stones are drawn to each other. In the trio style, Valerie Messika combines three cuts of diamonds and pays tribute to her favourite number. She takes it a step further by imagining an union where the juxtaposed diamonds celebrate endless love. My Twin proposes modern and elegant jewelleries that are engaged in a dance of light.

Crafted in 18kt yellow gold and studded with diamonds, the motif ’s detailed cut-out design isreminiscent of filigree, and sculpted using a fusion process. The head is topped with refined antennae and miniature interlocking G elements are nestled within the wings’ intricate latticework. The stud earrings are dominated by the butterfly motif, whilst the ring’s single centerpiece is perfectly offset with a torchon band. The necklace has a butterfly at its center, with interlocking G motifs further enriching the fine gold chain.

GUCCI LION HEAD FINE JEWELLERY COLLECTION Gucci pays homage to one of its most defining symbols, the Lion Head, in a new collection of fine jewellery. Three interpretations of the feline motif, featuring different gemstones, appear both as stud earrings and pendant necklaces within the line. One design is worked in 18kt white gold and encrusted with diamonds. A sparkling aquamarine stone is held within the lion’s teeth. Said to inspire truth and trust, the blue color of aquamarine is thought to be calming and cleansing. It is also considered to be the birthstone for those born in March. A second version of the Lion Head is crafted in 18kt yellow gold. It has diamond-set eyes and amethyst clutched between its teeth. The birthstone of February, amethyst is meditative, soothing, and its violet color is believed to promote balance and peace. Another 18kt yellow gold Lion Head completes the collection. This design also has diamondset eyes, but features a chromo diopside gemstone in its mouth. The deep forest green tone of the distinctive jewel is said to be restorative, and capable of healing a damaged heart.

DON’T WALK AN UNEVEN LINE

yeliner, specifically, can really perk up your peepers when wielded properly. But, on the flip side, it can also really drag down your makeup look when used incorrectly. Here are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind before you grab that eye pencil or liquid liner.

While no one is calling for absolute perfection when it comes to your eye makeup, there’s a fine line between sophisticated and sloppy. Jagged, uneven eyeliner can ruin an otherwise good look. The biggest offender is liquid liner as it requires an ever-sosteady hand and it can be quite the challenge to apply smoothly. Of course, it also delivers a strong, fluid line which means drama in spades. To keep a liquid liner straight, avoid tugging at the outer corners of the eyes. When you let go of the eye, the line will appear distorted. Plus, that tugging over time can lead to wrinkles. On the other hand, a pencil or gel product is far more forgiving if you’re in a rush.

DO CHOOSE THE RIGHT COLOUR If you’re stuck on black eyeliner only, then you’re missing out on a range of hues that can really boost your eye colour. For example, a brown shade is a less harsh option that creates a softer, more subtle effect. A deep, jewel-toned eyeliner such as an emerald green or sapphire blue can work wonders to bring out the colour of your eyes whereas a white or nude eyeliner on the lower lid works to brighten the eye, creating a refreshed, awake appearance.

DO MAKE IT LAST

DON’T GET TOO BOTTOM-HEAVY

EYE CONCUR

Like many things in life, there is too much of a good thing when it comes to eyeliner, especially if you’re painting too much product on the lower lid. Overdoing it with a thick line under the eye is too bottom-heavy and can actually make your eyes look smaller rather than enhancing them. You’re also more likely to end up with undereye smudges if you go this route. Better to swap the dark, thick liner for a lighter line and a subtler shade of taupe or light brown. And avoid using liquid liner on the bottom lid, too; it’s just too dense and will be dripping down your face by midday.

As much as we’d like to tell you that there is a miracle way to make your eye makeup and eyeliner stay perfectly in place from morning until night, at the end of the day, you will still have to reapply and touch it up. For an extra dose of staying power, waterproof gel liners are often your best bet for liner longevity, especially for the bottom lid. They also have less chance of smearing or running. But not even DON’T SKIP THE SMUDGE-PROOFING waterproof products will stay as The smudge-proof is in the pudding PHOTOGRAPHY: FERHAN KHAN PHOTOGRAPHY fresh and strong as when you first when it comes to your eyeliner. It’s a MODEL: OKSANA YAREMENKO applied it. So, pack your pencils common oversight to skip this step HAIR AND MAKEUP: LUCKY ALLURE with you, and refresh the line when of eye makeup application. But in needed. It shouldn’t take but a order for your eye makeup to last from sunup to sundown, you’ll want to combat the smudge. It’s not enough second if you’re starting from a solid foundation. Blotting papers for your lids are also a great idea, as they will take care of the eye makeup that may to just apply liner. First, you’ll want to prep your lids by brushing them with a translucent powder. You’ll also want to avoid putting any lotions or creams on have smudged into the creases without ruining your liner. the lids, as that can cause a good deal of smudging. Then, trace over the eyeliner line with a matching powder eye shadow. And for an even more dramatic effect, DO USE A SHARP PENCIL While this may seem like a no-brainer, don’t slack on keeping your eye retrace more liner over the powder for double impact. To make it last even pencils sharpened. Dull pencils with flat tips at the end will only yield a messy longer, wet the shadow brush with some eye-drop formula (or a drop of water) first - this also works for intensifying the pigment of your eyeshadow. application of product when smooth and precise is what you want.

You know what they say: Eyes are the windows to the soul, and as such, they can be one of the most captivating parts of your face. Thus, the role of makeup should be to enhance your eyes and give them definition and impact - not take away from their power.

To me, Givenchy has always embodied women’s elegance, chic and strength. I could not have hoped for a more exciting partnership... Givenchy has always been a brand that caught my attention, first with the beautiful masterpieces Givenchy Fashion House created every season, soon after that with the relationship I developed with the people inside it, the team I got to work with for three years now and who have always welcomed me with such warmth and love. I feel very comfortable with the beauty team and Nicolas Degennes is a very special human being. Do you remember when you first discovered the Givenchy brand? If I remember correctly, the first time I laid eyes on a Givenchy collection was when I entered my agency and my agents were working on models for the new fashion show – it was amazing. I instantly wanted to walk for the brand... and I eventually did! What does wearing makeup mean to you? Makeup offers infinite possibilities. Most of the time, I just want to be myself. I don’t like my everyday makeup to be too showy. There are excellent tools available to achieve a natural, yet enhanced, look. It’s important for me to be able to recognise myself in the mirror. What makes women beautiful? Their self-assurance, definitely. In my professional experience, what makes women stand out is their approach to life, what they believe in, what they think of their everyday existence. There are no universal beauty criteria... Women’s beauty comes in different forms, and working with Nicolas has made me want to discover more of this beauty. His portraits of Asian women from his shoots in Asia are absolutely stunning. www.ohlalamag.net

BEAUTY Insight Can you describe your beauty routine? I’d say my routine is quite minimal. For the daytime I like to keep it clean: a bit of Teint Couture Everwear Concealer wherever is needed (usually jet lag asks for some under the eyes!), highlighter on the top of the cheeks, eyelids and a touch on the nose, and some brown golden loose powder on the cheekbones for that sunkissed look. Lashes curled and a touch of mascara Volume Disturbia. That’s all for a healthy and natural glow. For a night look I usually stick to terrain and nude tones that go well with my olive skin, creating a light smokey eye, then maybe a strong red on the lip, or I play with a more unexpected colorful lip. I think the more you play around with the different products, the more you discover how they can be used in creative ways. And for your lips, what is your favorite Le Rouge colour? It’s so hard to choose. I love the classic Le Rouge but I think Le Rouge Deep Velvet has some of my favorite shades from all the products that have been released lately. I love the classic, timeless, strong red Le Rouge L’Interdit No.333 and some more bold and innovative ones such as Le Rouge Deep Velvet No.37 Rouge Grainé and Le Rouge Night Noir No.1 Night in Light. The texture that

I love most is definitely Le Rouge Deep Velvet. I think it is revolutionary in a way because I have not seen a product that is able to hold this texture for so long. You can get this texture in the market but it will dry out your lips and won’t be long lasting, making you re- apply many times throughout the day. I love that it lasts, moisturises and has a very unique finish to it while doing all that. What makeup tips can you share with us? Of course I have learned a lot from watching Nicolas and his team! Especially about preparing the skin, because we always follow the same routine before every shoot. For instance, before doing my makeup, his team applies a moisturising mask to my face, which gives me an incredibly luminous complexion once the makeup is on. After the base has been applied, the skin grain is literally transformed. It’s things like that, like learning how to thoroughly moisturise your skin before applying makeup, using the right methods to apply the products, and sometimes even knowing how to apply them differently for a more surprising makeup result. @givenchybeauty / @ndegennes

THE ERA OF

LUXURY ANUSHAY KHAN checked off DEVARANA SPA from her ‘must-go’ list, and we are completely in awe of her indulgent experience.

From the moment I heard that Devarana Spa was

making its grand entrance in the Qatar market at Dusit Doha Hotel, I knew that I had to get my name on that booking list. With work keeping me on my toes, I repeatedly had to edit my appointment slot. I however started 2020 in the most luxurious way that I could possibly imagine; The Devarana Speciality massage. Devarana means ‘garden in heaven’, derived from the ThaiSanskrit and I cannot think of a name more aptly given to a venue such as this. The journey up to the 29th floor of Dusit Doha Hotel, that is located in the perfect setting of the glorious Westbay, showcased teasers of the delight of Devarana Spa. The distinct aroma of lemongrass filled the air as it washed over me as my muscles lightened up knowing that the following two hours were going to be total bliss.. With the beautiful marble tiled entrance, the dazzling lights, and the concept itself evoking the senses you cannot help but feel intrinsically special. The contemporary design of the spa gives an instant feel of the elite luxury that is consistent throughout the premise. Sipping on my tea, sitting next to the pool with the water flowing further added to the calmness of the room. The vitality area that hosted the steam and sauna rooms were a

My masseuse escorted me to my treatment room, a beautifully crafted, dimly lit room that displayed the high-end products used here. The room and its magical healing powers were all I needed to get myself in the mood for the amazing treatment that followed. Promising to soothe emotions and soften the skin, I simply felt like all of the Hollywood dreams of my life came true as I took in this lavishly phenomenal experience of immersing myself in a milk bath for the first time. Sitting in this rose petalled haven, overlooking the giant skyscrapers in one of the hottest cities in the world, it sometimes just makes you grateful for all the things that you have in life. Needless to say, my emotions weren’t just soothed, I was smitten over the entire experience that was on display. The milk bath was followed by exemplary service of my masseuse, who was very accomodating to my stress points. With the room temperature set to my comfort level and the mint leaves to relieve my ongoing battle with my sinuses, further showcases the attention-to-detail and health preparations that are derived from natural ingredients - a plus point at any stage in life! The Devarana massage is a series of techniques from Thai, Ayurveda and Shiatsu with a combination of alternating strokes to achieve the much-needed muscle relaxation that I’d came for - and it didn’t disappoint. The kaffir lime and orange with a mix of mint leaves in a bowl of hot water for inhalation as requested were the precious addition that was

needed to concrete this unparalleled experience. With every inch of my body given the utmost attention, I slipped into blissful oblivion of the time and my whereabouts - isn’t that what relaxation should always be all about? The Devarana Spa lived up to its worldly known luxurious style and services. With Dusit Doha Hotel’s entry in the market over a year ago and Devarana Spa’s arrival that followed shortly, Thai hospitality has made its mark. Giving Qatar the ‘East meets West’ ancient therapies that add to the uniqueness of Devarana, if you want to achieve ultimate relaxation, this should be your go-to for comfort. EXPERIMENT 9 For Spring/Summer 2020, IAM MAI introduces a collection inspired by the simplicity of structure. The graphic lines of a staircase defines ‘Experiment 9’, where the sequence of stairs is reflected through the creative use of pleating. Shot at the dynamic location of Al Safa Art and Design Library, a platform that stems far beyond a traditional library, IAM MAI’s SS’20 collection exudes unconventional styles procured from traditional silhouettes. Merging structure with shadows is portrayed through the art of pleating fused with asymmetrical patterns in pleated light taffeta. Meanwhile, playing with the way the sunlight falls on structured elements is brought out with metallic dotted chiffon in matte and glossy finish. A strong colour palette featuring earthy tones of stone and black is fused with delicate shades of white, light blue and faded pink. While introducing a glaze-effect silk blend organza emphasising the clarity of each design. Voluminous culottes, skirts and tops feature hints of tonal dressing while double layer dresses are introduced for a feminine touch. Experimenting with minimal colour blocking, unique details lie in Mai’s incorporation of hidden belts and pleated sleeves. Experiment 9 reflects a crisp aesthetic focusing on effortless silhouettes complementing a sense of understated poise. @iammai.design / www.iam-mai.com

CHIC Eats

TASTE OF TURKEY Fresh from her recent visit to Istanbul, ANUSHAY KHAN was on the lookout for food that would remind her of her travels and Emirgan Sutis certainly delivered.

Emirgan Sutis is a name that almost everyone in Doha knows. Whether it is for the grandeur location at The Pearl, the sunset you witness as you dine there, or the mere fact that yours truly simply thinks that there is literally nobody out there who can live up to this place. On what I expected to be a mildly cosy evening in Doha, I headed for an early dinner at The Pearl branch of the restaurant. The aroma of the fresh meat being BBQ’d along with the chic setting of the restaurant came together like a fairytale for me. The sun had not entirely set and the golden hour of Doha cast a light into the restaurant, reflecting the blue and gold decor of the logo in the most minimalistically chic way possible. With the weather that we have right now, who wouldn’t have selected the alfresco dining seating on this particularly beautiful evening? I would recommend you reserve 90

a table with the chairs if you’re there for food because as comfortable as the sofas are, they’re purely for the tea-sipping party. You easily sink into the baby blue and white cushions for hours, but you’re going to find it difficult to eat with ease. As for Turkish cuisine, one can only do justice to it if you delve into the divine combination of the mixed mezze with hot bread fresh from the oven. Where the traditional mezze were phenomenal, the cig kofte and su boregi proved to be the highlight of the first round. With its white cheese filling and a crispy textured borek to balance the taste, the su boregi was one-of-a-kind. As the beef tomato paste added an interesting flavour to the dish, I couldn’t help but wonder how underrated the cig kofte at Emirgan Sutis actually is. The traditional mix mezze was truly a masterpiece. Their well prepared delectable serving of starters were presented in an ideal quantity, the

CHIC Eats kind that that doesn’t make you too full for the next course but also ropes you back in for that ‘one last bite’ again and again. Anastasia, our server for the night, saw our love for the starters and instead of taking the leftovers back to the kitchen, simply put them on the side so that we could keep stealing bites mid-conversation. In what was now a slightly chilly evening, the tantalising smell of perfection took over my senses and I was presented with the chef ’s selection of the main course. I would recommend everyone to come here at least once as you’ll be willing to sell your soul to these guys. The special Sutis beyti kebab grasped my attention immediately with its lavish layers of cherry tomato sauce, yogurt and the melted butter wrapped up in the classic Turkish bread, added a whole new dimension to this dish. The lamb loin, a favourite on our table, was medium-cooked, as per our request, and succulent to the point of retaining its flavour and the juicy tenderness throughout every bite. A simple sprinkle of salt on the meat and a bite of the creamed spinach proved to be a delight to our taste buds. Adding a further dynamic to this delight was the closed pide with kasar cheese - the ideal fit for this moreish meal.

“I would recommend everyone to come here at least once as you’ll be willing to sell your soul to these guys.”

Our love for food was obvious to the extent that dessert was served in a small platter of bite-sized assorted Turkish delicacies. We experienced kazandibi, a traditional Turkish dessert that was made with chicken breast, and it had me skeptical to even touch it. With its texture and look encompassing that of a swiss roll, it was a different experience that I still wasn’t fully convinced to dive into. I would still recommend the risk-takers to give it a try. The trillice was the one that would win my vote on this table. The luxurious dessert that reminded me of a caramel pudding sat right in the pocket of my sweet-tooth. I can easily say that this was one of the most luscious dinners I’ve ever had the privilege of experiencing. Anastasia made sure we were warm with the heater placed near us, the staff made sure that the food was served at the ideal pace, and the recommendations were off the chart for us! If you’re looking for exceptional Turkish food and glamorous surroundings, Emirgan Sutis at The Pearl Boulevard should be on top of your list. MISS Ohlala

MATERNAL

INSTINCT WHILE WE GIVE THE MOTHERS IN OUR LIVES THEIR WELL DESERVED THANKS AND RECOGNITION, THIS MOTHER’S DAY, MISS OHLALA EXPLORES THE IMPORTANCE OF MOTHERHOOD AND WHY IT IS NOT ALWAYS A GIVEN. 98

www.ohlalamag.net

PHOTOGRAPHY: FERHAN KHAN PHOTOGRAPHY | MODEL: OKSANA YAREMENKO | HAIR AND MAKEUP: LUCKY ALLURE

If women were really born with a maternal instinct, we would see birth rates stay the same through the years. Even the feminist movement of the 1960s and ‘70s that expanded educational and workforce opportunities for many women shouldn’t change which women decide to be parents. But childfree adulthood has been on the rise since then. What we think of as maternal instinct comes from our culture rather than our nature. Children – and girls in particular – are taught from a very young age that one of the most important things they can do when they grow up is to become parents. A web search for “girls’ toys” and “boys’ toys” quickly reveals that parenthood is girls’ domain. Perpetuating the myth of maternal instinct harms all women, whether they have children or not. Women who choose to have children are told that it’s the most important thing they do. It is no accident that pressure on mothers to intensively nurture their children increased at the very time more women began working outside the home. As women’s labour force participation grew, their share of the work at home did not decline. Instead, women became subject to an ideology which holds that good mothering means labour-intensive mothering. While mothers are pressured to intensively parent, women who opt out of parenthood are treated as social pariahs. We’re told that the most important job any woman can hold is motherhood, that childfree women are selfish, and even that they’re bad for society. Nevertheless, some women do feel compelled for reasons they cannot always articulate to have children. And, in the absence of an easy explanation, it’s understandable to believe that natural instinct is the reason. But the more we look into it, the more we find that’s not the case. This month, let’s recognise the women who have opted to take on the difficult work of good mothering by giving them credit for their choice and their efforts. Our gratitude will be appreciated much more than were we to discount motherhood as what happens naturally without their intentional effort.
