s an expat woman living in the Middle East, I am on a constant quest for oxygen for my lungs, my soul and my skin. My apartment is full of oxygen-producing plants and you can catch me doing yoga and breathing exercises regularly. The biggest organ we possess is our skin and it makes the world of sense to shower it with hydration and, above all, oxygen. During the winter months, my skin feels like it is literally crying out for extra tender loving care and, in light of preparing for the much-awaited OHLALA Spa Awards, I decided to go try a new facial treatment named the ‘Oxygen Facial’ - available at The Ritz-Carlton Spa. On a bright and beautiful winter’s day I head out for my treatment. It has been some time since I have visited this side of Doha, and 56

The modern interior takes me on a journey from entering the hotel right to the treatment room, where I am welcomed with a beautiful rose petal arrangement on the treatment bed. One could call them the connoisseurs of detail, who leave nothing to chance. I have been looking forward to trying the ‘Oxygen Facial’, developed by Natura Bissé - named the World’s Best Spa Brand for three years in a row. We start off with deep pore cleaning and I am pleasantly surprised by the full body massage that is part of the package. A wonderful headto-toe massage is administered in between each application giving each ingredient time to work its magic and sending me into Zenlike relaxation. La Dolce Vita Authenticity of flavour and creativity of design unite at Veritas, where Amica Sicilia finds Italian tradition elevated to haute cuisine

ith barely a dozen tables of low, deeply-padded velvet seats, Veritas at Al Messila Resort & Spa – the newly reopened and reimagined heartland of multi-Michelin-starred Executive Chef Pino Lavarra – feels more like the reading room of an exclusive members’ club than a restaurant. Dark hardwood panelling lines the walls, framing traditional hand-painted blue ceramic tiles. Three grand arches are gently illuminated by curving chandeliers of blown blue glass. We half expect to see a brooding Burt Lancaster as The Leopard, lounging over an espresso in an alcove. Under Chef Pino’s expert guidance, Chef de cuisine Federico Bacciocchi and a small hand-picked team have reimagined the menu. Bravely, it doesn’t include a single pizza! Instead, often unglamorous icons of Italian cuisine like lasagna alla bolognese, ossobuco and panna cotta have been deconstructed and refined, ingredient by quality ingredient, to arrive at their essential elements, presented with creativity and flair. Recognising fellow Italians far from home, Chef Federico urges us to let the food take us travelling in our memories, like Proust’s petites madeleines. First to the table is a breadboard bedecked with a trio of contrasting textures, straight from the oven. A palm-sized, nutty brown pane di campagna, or country loaf, breaks open to reveal pillow-soft crumb, into which herbed butter melts eagerly. We place glowing confit tomatoes on streghe imolesi (roughly translated as witches’ crackers from Imola, in Emilia-Romagna), the thinnest, crispest crackers, dusted with parmesan and dried rosemary, and dip graceful grissini breadsticks into a cup of ricotta whipped to a fine foam. 70

CHIC Eats On a rough-hewn slab of stone, tiny, fragile little arancini break open to reveal earthy truffle mushroom risotto within. Beside them, the essence of bruschetta: the bread smoky toasted, drenched in deep green basil oil, loaded with red and yellow tomatoes and a pearl of burrata. Having demolished these, we investigate what looks like an unassuming pot of raw baby vegetables. Their crisp freshness hides a dark secret below, a reservoir of the northern Italian sauce bagna cauda, an umami explosion of garlic and anchovy. So much for the warm-up, we move on to more serious matters. An insalata di gamberi on a blue glass plate presents a true king among prawns, so tender it almost melts. Tartare di fassona showcases the purity of flavour and imaginative presentation that typifies Veritas: the finest cut of the protected cattle of Piedmont is knife-minced raw, seasoned with truffle and shaped into banks around a perfectly circular pool of minted pea, complemented by crumbling tiny sweet-onion shortbreads. Next comes a rare treat. Spaghetti alla chitarra is the dish for which Chef Pino won his first Michelin star. The unusual square form of the fresh pasta is bathed in a puttanesca sauce, its rich tomato spiked with black olives and tiny fried capers, and the whole swathed in a tuna carpaccio so tender it disintegrates to lace beneath our forks. The climax comes with agnello scottadito, roast lamb popularly nicknamed ‘burned fingers’ – so good you can’t wait for it to cool down to take a taste. The blushing tender meat is crowned with an extraordinary buttery crust, perfumed with lavender. A cousin of rosemary, perhaps it shouldn’t be such a surprise that lavender suits lamb so well. As savoury addicts, it takes a lot to persuade us to leave much space for dessert. But we’re so glad we did. We are presented with two classics among Italian sweets. Served playfully on a garden trowel on a bed of frosted chocolate ‘winter soil’, the tiramisù delights even before we get to taste it. But it doesn’t disappoint. The mascarpone is whipped light as air, tinted golden by the freshness of the eggs. Real espresso coffee oozes from homemade

savoiardi biscuits. Beside this dark beauty, its antithesis: a soffice souffle of Amalfi lemons. Soft as silk and topped with the fierce pink of raspberry sorbet, it tastes of potted sunlight. But it is with the final bite that I truly experience the transportive magic Chef Federico was hoping for. On the saucer beside the slow-brewed moka napoletana Neapolitan coffees we are brought as we sit back and contemplate our food journey, is a small, unassuming cookie. It’s simple – just hazelnuts held together with a little cocoa – but it takes my breath away. For a moment I am 15 again, skin bronzed by sun, sticky with salt, piling into the local bakery to fill sea-starved stomachs with these little lumpen brutti ma buoni (ugly but delicious). I am undone. In the gastronomic cornucopia that is Doha, it is very difficult to achieve the uniquely excellent. But Chef Pino has succeeded in creating a truly elevated and authentically Italian fine-dining experience that, while creatively ambitious, remains true to its heritage, though far from home. If you love road trips, good food, culture and water parks, best you add this latest treasure to the top of your to-do list. It is a Wednesday afternoon and I have invited two of my closest girlfriends for a much-needed catch-up. During these times with so much change and separation, I have a particularly good reason to celebrate. One of the friends has returned to Qatar and this is the best news I have had for a while. We decided to stop by an art exhibition to commence the much-anticipated girls only road trip. When we reach our destination, the excitement is palpable. It is time to experience the magic of Levantine at the Hilton Salwa Beach Resort! The property boasts exquisite exteriors inspired by Tunisian architecture. The concept of the restaurant is a fusion of Lebanese, Palestinian, Iranian, Qatari, Syrian and Turkish cuisine. An almost Mediterranean feel comes across with the pure white buildings, blue terraces and intimate narrow pathways. We arrive at Levantine and receive a warm welcome from a group of friendly staff. I instantly fall in love with the high-end, modern finishes inside and the wide-open kitchen spilling from the middle of the restaurant. As we are seated the manager arrives with a big brass bowl filled with rose-infused water and each of us washes our hands. Apparently, this is an old traditional custom to welcome special guests, and we love it! 72

The Levantine menu is the brainchild of the well-travelled and uber-creative Chef Ousama Al Akhras, originally from Jordan. The starters are presented not long after the introductions and I thought that they might have doubled our order. However, there was no mistake, and I was most certainly not seeing double. A kaleidoscope of hummus fills the table, boasting endless different, newly imagined taste combinations ranging from sautéed garlic shrimp, sour cherry, broccolini, braised lamb, smoked garlic right through to the tomatopaprika flavour. It is safe to say that this is the best hummus I have ever tried. They say that the true test of a good Arabic restaurant shines through when the ‘Innabiyeh’ arrives. My Arabic guests dive into the stuffed vine leaves and both are extremely impressed. The mains arrive along with a few hot meze dishes and I am eager to try the chicken livers, as they are not that common on most menus in Qatar. They are cooked to perfection and the sauce is deliciously comforting. If you think you’ve seen every iteration of an Arabic barbecue imaginable in Qatar by now, think again. From the barbecue selection, one is spoilt with many different varieties of meat combinations originating from all the diverse regions. I am totally blown away by the Syrian halabi kofteh, which is a grilled lamb kofteh cooked in a rich and flavoursome cherry stew. Another pleasant surprise is the Qatari kibbeh, a pescatarian version of the more common kibbeh comprised of red snapper, prawns, calamari and saffron aioli. There is time for a breather before dessert and while we enjoy the beautiful cool weather on the terrace, we sip on molecular mixologyinspired mocktails. Each one uniquely different and special with much thought and detail in every rendition. For dessert, we move into the stylish lounge/bar area. Two generous servings selected by our proud chef arrive. The Qatari luqaimat and a chocolate-date pudding which is elegantly presented and billowing with dry ice smoke as the hot chocolate sauce is poured over the cake. A lovely touch of theatrics, which makes this dining experience so special. And best of all, everything tastes just as good as it looks. As the evening draws to a close, I reflect on the truly memorable experience Levantine has not only impressed us with all the mouthwatering food, but also with the attention to every detail, which makes it well worth a mention and to bank as a fond memory for us all. oday, Doha is a gleaming, modern metropolis. Its landscaped seafront lined with sleek towers, the city is a crossroads for global travellers, a melting pot of cultures and an international business hub. But to truly know a city, it’s not enough to experience its present, you have to voyage into its past. So while real travel is still a fantasy, why not try time travel? And why not try it over breakfast? Le Colonial, Doha’s first dedicated breakfast room, at the elegant Alwadi Hotel Doha MGallery, bridges two iconic neighbourhoods of this multifaceted city: one a testament to its history; the other a vision of its future. Below its shaded terrace lies the most vivid living experience of the Doha of long ago, Souq Waqif. There has been a marketplace here for more than a century. Its renovation a decade ago revived and preserved the traditional architecture of low adobe houses around hidden internal courtyards. Between them wind lanes where visitors can still buy spices and honey, artisan textiles and intricate jewellery. In the south-west corner, the sturdy white towers of Al Koot fort stand guard over the souq, as they have for a hundred years – though now the fortress houses a museum of Qatari crafts. But though Le Colonial looks out on this timeless panorama, it does not belong to it entirely. Alwadi Hotel Doha MGallery stands on the edge of one of Doha’s newest neighbourhoods, Msheireb Downtown. groundbreaking sustainable regeneration project has transformed the old commercial district. In Msheireb Downtown, the simple geometry of the souq turns into something utterly modern. Soaring palazzi of cream stone intersect blue sky, with patterned screens shading halfhidden leafy piazzas and gardens where fountains play – a nod to the original well and riverbed that first drew settlers here, and today give Alwadi Hotel Doha MGallery its name. capsule. Welcome to the old port of Doha, circa 1930. Every element adds to the illusion. Vintage packing cases, trunks and valises line the walls. Their details are picked up in the stylish furniture, iron-cornered and leatherstrapped, subtly weathered as though with many climates and miles. The walls are papered and stamped with old maps of Qatar, while the floor, tiled and banded with iron, is embossed with the names of Qatar’s historic ports. We bag a corner table on the columned and shaded balcony, the cool white lines of Msheireb Downtown to our backs, the low roofs of the souq laid out before us. Breakfast is naturally the most important meal of the day, and Le Colonial ensures all visitors start the day with style. Just as the décor unites Qatar’s past and present, the menu connects Doha to the world. Local and regional specialities are presented alongside international classics, with equal emphasis on quality, local ingredients. The viennoiserie pastries are as authentic and fresh as the za’atar manakish flatbreads, steaming from the oven. Here, brioche French toast meets its match in lemon labneh, while Belgian waffles are bested only by balaleet – a Qatari classic of fine vermicelli scented with rosewater, cardamom and saffron, set against a velvety omelette. We opt to try both faces of Le Colonial. My companion can’t resist the Parisienne breakfast, a winning combination of hearty eggs Benedict followed

by delicate crêpes sucrées. I’m seduced by the Levant. Foul medames, fragrant with cumin and garlic, is finished with the playful touch of extra virgin olive oil delivered by pipette. Beside it the essential shakshouka sizzles in a cast-iron skillet, the golden yolks of perfectly poached eggs escaping into spiced tomato sauce to be mopped up with eager flatbreads. We wash down our feast with many, many foamy cappuccinos and gorgeous freshly-squeezed juices. The classic lemon mint is bursting with green leaves, while those in need of a lift other than caffeine can’t fail to be reinvigorated by what the menu cheekily dubs ‘Proper Lemsip’: a magical elixir of orange, carrot, ginger, turmeric and honey. Below us, life goes on, the hum of modern Doha overlaid atop an older rhythm, constant as the tides that have lapped this wide bay since the dawn of memory. The truth is, it is all of the above and so much more. We at OHLALA have always been huge fans of the brand and this month, thanks to the friendly and professional team at NBK Automobiles, we were given the opportunity to experience the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class and, yet again, we were more than impressed. As soon as Mercedes-Benz’s new flagship vehicle came into view, we could see that the exterior design of the new S-Class is that of a classic sedan, one that boasts perfect proportions. At the front end, a bigger-than-ever,

high-status radiator grille draws the eye, complemented by front headlights that house a unique LED signature. With a short overhang, long wheelbase and a balanced rear overhang, the new S-Class looks as powerful as it does graceful. With 20-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels and optional flush fitted doorhandles that pop out as you approach the car, the flanks are no less than stunning with a single crease running across the length of an otherwise smooth surface. The rear lights have intricate LED detailing with chrome accents, whilst real exhaust pipes are present in the dual exhaust setup. As we entered the vehicle we felt as if we were slipping into a first-class lounge. Firstly, the soft seats are extremely comfortable, supportive and situated higher than we expected, giving us a commanding view of the roads. The cabin seats can be adjusted in a multitude of ways, all via sensitive capacitors on the door. With no less than 19 individual motors used to adjust your seat, no matter your size or shape, you are sure to have one comfy ride. DIVA Drives through the Comfort Menu on the infotainment system. These include massage options such as Hot Relaxing Back, Hot Relaxing Shoulders, Mobilising Massage, Activated Massage, Classic Massage and many more. The steering wheel is beautifully designed, feels great in hand and is full of capacitor buttons, allowing the driver to have complete control over the functions and systems of the vehicle without taking their hands off the wheel. In the rear, the almost hidden controls on the doors operate the side and rear windows. The seats are multi-adjustable and very comfortable with massage functionality and microfibre headrests. As in the front, ambient lighting features on the doors glow red or blue depending on weather you are turning the temperature up or down. An Android tablet fitted in the central console can be removed and used to surf the internet or

watch movies. Built-in rear seat entertainment is present on both sides, as well as an optional fridge behind the centre consol. There are plenty of USB ports and cup holders throughout the car, as well as wireless charging options and even a set of wireless, noise cancelling headphones. Once out on the road, we got to play with the second generation MBUX learn-capable system. This system is more digital and intelligent than its predecessor, with brilliant displays on up to five large screens, in part with OLED technology. The 3D driver display allows for spatial view at the touch of a button for the very first time, and a real three-dimensional effect is achieved without the need for 3D glasses. The head up display shows details such as current speed, the speed limit, road markings and more. It warns you when you are straying out of your lane and, when you select

augmented reality, actual arrows appear on the road in front of you, directing you where to turn. We have never experienced technology like this in any car we have test driven before. Performance wise, our model S-Class boasts an S 500 4Matic petrol engine that produces 2999cc with 320kW of power. It can surge from zero to 100km/h in just 4.9 seconds and has a regulated top speed of 250km/h. It’s brilliant suspension system alone is enough to earn this car awards and combined with a fantastic braking system, responsive handling and technological assistance second to none, this is one classy and capable vehicle to drive. In truth an entire article could easily be written on each and every feature of this vehicle and you would still have to experience it for yourself to truly understand what this magical creation is capable of.
