There is no deeper wound than losing an inspiration, icon, pioneer and empowering woman like Maria Luisa Poumaillou. Not only did she inspire many with her distinguished style and character, but her sharp-eye for talent created an impact on society and the fashion community. She was a woman with visionary taste and championed many greats like: Margiela, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Riccardo Tisci among many other prominent artists. Without a doubt the fashion industry mourns her death but commemorates and honours Maria Luisa for the grandiose woman that she was. As an editor and fashion devotee, I was lucky enough to visit her creative space at Printemps Paris where I was able to enjoy Maria Luisa’s shop-to-shop. Not only was she the fashion editor for Printemps Paris, but her store at Rue Cambon was a destination for fashion pilgrims around the world. This letter is dedicated to her and her impeccable contribution to the fashion world. Thank you Maria Luisa for leaving an exceptional mark.

A maxi skirt and fringe play? We’re on some serious terrain with this trend now. Not only will this Tamara Mellon (net-aporter.com) skirt keep you cool as the summer heat approaches, the fringe will be a fun distraction when you’re bored!
Boho Chic
If you’re into your music festivals, this Carolina Herrera envelope bag has that relaxed vibe as well as the sophistication to carry you through an evening dinner. The camel colour gives it that extra “outdoor” look.

A Little Party…
There’s been a lot of fringe benefits going around this season and we’ve jumped on the bandwagon to join the frilly fun. Whether you’re into the Wild West or 1920s prohibition trim, there’s lots of swish action to be had.

Moving along the colour spectrum, we’ve landed on green – but we all know it’s not as linear as that. Whether it’s a citron, military or jungle green, the eye of the beholder will be wracked with jealousy for you’ll stand out like a warrior with even just a small but sharp injection of green. Feel like being in charge? By all means proceed with a utility option with a waist belt to keep things structured and disciplined. But if you’re into the louder side of green, a pop of lime will give you a nice bit of fizz.

WHO’S THAT GIRL? Fatema FardAn is going places – but she’s also come from places too. Her first foray into fashion began in a top London hotel with a cut of curtain fabric which might have been a nightmare for the hotel staff, but was the beginning of a dream come true for her. Now, she’s set for the biggest runway scene in the world.
How did you come to realise fashion was your calling?
I realised fashion was my calling when I was nine years old. On one family vacation when my parents left me and my siblings unattended for merely five minutes in our hotel room at the Lanesborough in London, being a young girl in love with the idea of fashion design, I instantly noticed the beautiful curtain fabrics, and so young me innocently decided to cut up the curtains and surprise my parents by pretending to be making some dresses. You can imagine my parents were in for quite the big surprise. So from that moment on, my family and I knew that my passion was strongly to carry on, in the fashion industry. What’s your process when you come up with new ideas? My process starts with a lot of visual research. I go to art galleries, travel and try to absorb different elements that inspire me, such as architecture, art, culture, nature and history. When I finish compiling my research I then begin sketching and sampling over and over again. This is a timely process but once the samples are approved and made, the finished result is the collection. 48

Do you have any part in the making of the clothes or do you leave it to your team to do it? I do have a team that help me produce my collection but I am very hands on and I inspect every stitch and seam myself. Your ready-to-wear collection caters for the modern woman. In three words, what defines a woman in the GCC? Refinement, beauty and strength. The clothes have a very light, airy and feminine look about them. How do you want women to feel when they wear them? I want women to look like a million dollars in my clothes; that’s one of the reasons I do what I do to make women feel good about themselves on a daily basis. What influenced the direction of this collection? The collection was inspired by three major themes; menswear and womenswear from the 50s to the early 60s and traditional Persian art. While I was doing my research for this collection, I was inspired by women from that time where they were finally able to take on important jobs but the way they dressed in their daily life was still very feminine. I wanted to combine a choice of silhouettes with a variety of techno and conventional fabrics such as laces, silks and jacquards to tell their story with a more modern approach, relevant to our times.
What’s your favorite, go-to item from the collection and why? My Ana Coat and Fifi Jacket, because both are very versatile. They can be dressed down as well as dressed up. You’ve also dressed Eva Longoria. How were you approached and what was it like working with the pint-sized actress? I was approach by Imagine Consulting who asked me if I wanted to dress her and I of course agreed. Eva is not only an actress but also a philanthropist and we felt that she embodied our brand. Eva is very sweet and down to earth. It was a pleasure working with her and we would be happy to work with her again. The GCC is home to some exquisite and eclectic fashion. Which other part of the world do you think has great statement fashion? Other than the fashion capitals London, Paris, Milan, New York I believe that Barcelona, as well as Tokyo have a very interesting and dynamic fashion scene.
Perisan Influence: Fatema Fardan

What can we look forward to with your collection by the time autumn comes about? My AW15/16 Collection will be presented in New York Fashion week and I will be the first Emirati National to show at New York. OHLALA!

Like Mother Like Daughter How many times have you heard the phrase:“I’m my mother’s daughter”? Chances are you’ve heard it many times. But PLAKINGER has taken that to a whole new meaning and into the fashion industry. Galina Plakinger and Svetlana Ziggel talk about the challenges of co-creating a family brand and who’s got the better sense of style.
What is it like working in a family business, especially when it’s a mother/daughter relationship? Svetlana Ziggel: There is a lot of strength and power in a mother/daughter relationship to capitalise on and we are trying to take advantage of that as much as we can. My mother and I always had a close relationship and that respect helps us to find lots of common ground whenever we have a discussion, which we have plenty of. Galina Plakinger: It is a dream constellation for me as I can be close to my daughter and her kids (both under 4 years) while working and her business trips give me the opportunity to pamper my grandchildren. The great thing about PLAKINGER is that we can run it as a family business; it is not about me or Svetlana, but about building something that will last for longer. How did the company came about? How did you decide to set it up? GP: The idea of starting PLAKINGER evolved from my work as a bespoke tailor. Bespoke suits for men with their classic cuts are icons of timeless fashion. The level of work that is dedicated to details goes far beyond the quality of prêt-a-porter 52
OHLALA!
collections. It was my intention to contribute these aspects and to create timeless, high quality clothing for women. SZ: PLAKINGER was not set up overnight, but it was a gradual process that started in bespoke tailoring. The ready to wear collections give us the opportunity to offer our ideas of luxury female fashion and our aspiration for quality to a broader audience. A personal touch and feel is important for us and thus our products still breathe the spirit of their small atelier manufacturing. Who has the stronger sense of style? SZ: Clearly my mother. She has been in the business for quite some time and developed a more classic and elegant taste. As I grew up during the 80s and early 90s I probably have developed a more expressive style that provides inspiration for the contemporary elements in our collections. Currently, my favourite easy to wear piece is the navy blue coat tailored from a sumptuous virgin wool and angora blend from the PLAKINGER Spring Summer 2015 collection. The cut is straight and contemporary, it features menswear inspired details, it is timeless, and versatile. GP: I think it is the other way around. But
regardless of who has the stronger sense for style, PLAKINGER is about the combination of the two style perceptions that create the special look. I truly believe that you can only achieve this continuously, if you are very close to each other, such as e.g. mother and daughter. How would you describe each of your styles? SZ: My style is classic, chic but comfortable. And I am ready to invest in life lasting pieces. However, since the birth of my kids I needed to dress more casual and quick on a daily basis. That gives me a great opportunity to get some distance from the fashion business and clean up my mind for new inspirations. GP: I have no choice other than to dress versatile. My day usually starts in the atelier and there I want to feel most comfortable, but I might need to be ready for the next client meeting quickly. Therefore I got used to combining comfortable basics with more sophisticated separates like a blazer. What are the biggest obstacles you have faced? SZ: To get across the idea of what PLAKINGER is all about. When customers wear one of our pieces for the first time, they feel the difference in quality www.ohlala-magazine.com
in the PLAKINGER look and fit, which is very difficult to convey in pictures. Every emerging fashion brand faces the challenge of finding the right distribution channels that can convey its identity and idea to customers.
Style Insight
What is the most important thing you’ve learned about the industry and yourself? SZ: Before starting PLAKINGER I had worked in the financial services industry for a number of years and now I run a fashion business with my mother. That was neither planned nor expected, but I think it boils down to what you want to achieve and how passionately you pursue your goals. I find it inspiring and encouraging that the fashion industry has a higher percentage of working women and mothers compared to other industries. GP: PLAKINGER has taught me that there is much more to be explored and I enjoy this opportunity every day. The fashion business is very tough and competitive and since we started we have successfully gone through many painful challenges and thereby learnt all aspects of our business. Who are your style icons? SZ: That is a difficult question as changes in the business are very fast these days and also different themes and styles are en vogue at the same time. Personally, I think that it is not enough to have someone good looking wearing beautiful clothes; a style icon these days just needs to have more in terms of depths and personality. It is no secret that I would love to dress Lupita Nyong’o or Emma Watson as they represent a lot of what our brand stands for, strength, self-confidence and intelligence. What are you inspired by? GP: Inspiration is everywhere and we try to stay ahead of what is next to come, culturally as well as socially. We mainly follow our intuition and heart and there can be these certain moments or events that set the baseline for a collection. What is your creative process like? SZ: The initial inspiration – that creative starting point, is the most crucial step in the design. Thereafter, it becomes a more structured process whereby the first idea is developed into prototypes. Also, the selection of fabrics is a crucial moment as they are the texture of our ideas or their skin. GP: As I approach every collection more from the production and quality perspective, my priorities are different. Creating the prototypes from the fabrics is a key step for me, as I need to think about every detail that our brand and quality stands for. The perfectly tailored fit is the most important feature as I want to get our clothes as close as possible to a bespoke fit. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Beauty Column
Pale By Comparison: An Ode To Being Fair Now that summer has reared its way into our lives again, legs are making a comeback after a good five-month hiatus. In our new beauty column, Georgie Bradley discusses our fixation with being tanned. If you could see me you’d understand why I’m about to sing the praises of paleness. I am Casper, a fridge, a snowflake, an ill-looking shade of white. The mirror, mirror on the wall agrees. What doesn’t help my case is the fact that I am half Greek as well as English. The former should have blessed me with olive skin – a remark I get from most who learn my heritage who then peer down at my legs as if I should surgically add the skin colour that should have been my birth right. Living in the region doesn’t help either. According to my friends back in the U.K. I should have a yearlong glow that never fades. Putting our arms out and comparing how bronzed we are is an obsolete game, because I always lose. I do not however, care. I do not curse my genetic makeup for my seethroughness. I do not worship the sun nor bottles of fake bake. I see people looking like leathered goods and I know what it has taken for them to look like that – because in the past, every time I’d go back to Greece, I was under pressure (self-inflicted) to sizzle like a roast each day to achieve the ‘healthy’ look. And the thing is, I do tan very well, as if my Greek side lays dormant until the Hellenic sun kisses me and I’m allowed to be more goddess-like. This internalised idea that it is ‘healthy’ though, is purely ironic. We know of the stats and figures on skin cancer but we dismiss it with youthful ignorance. But I’m not writing about the health implications of being tanned, but about the fact that pale-shaming is all too common. What was once a mark of beauty and class is now a sight for sore eyes. Pale people are 74
OHLALA!
“Pale means you’re not chasing manufactured ideals”
made to feel like they haven’t truly lived (under the sun) and aren’t outgoing – as if we live under a rock till the oil-slick crowd come back from all the fun. And because the weather is warmer, I am the token statue at all gatherings. I always get teased for how white I am; my limbs get prodded like dead fish that might be still alive. Even my sister, love her to bits, told me to wear tanned tights to her wedding in August last year because otherwise “it will look like we invited a ghost”. I did not. Now that everyone is in the holiday spirit, resorts around the world are starting to see sun-bed snatching tourists wanting as much exposure as possible to get that look done and dusted to later show as a sign of a wellspent holiday on Instagram and then in person for the full effect. While that may be happening in places like Cebu in The Philipines, the locals hold up umbrellas as a shield to the sun for historical and present reasons – the darker you were the more gypsy you came across on the social hierarchy and because there is still a western complex: being Caucasian is cool, apparently. I guess it’s just like the want for curly or straight hair. You want that which you cannot (at least permanently) have. I am forever baring my blue veined pins, a noticeable neck/jawline discoloration (Chanel, please do something about this!) and my badge of honour. Pale is pretty in its own, whimsical way. Pale means you’re not chasing after manufactured, quite frankly under performing ideals. Pale is what Anne Hathaway and Nicole Kidman are. But pale is also skin-deep, remember that. www.ohlala-magazine.com

BEAUTY Insight
A spritz of happiness Perfumer Jean-Christophe Hérault’s latest concoction, CHOPARD HAPPY SPIRIT AMIRA D’AMOUR, is a sparkling mix of floral intensity with honey. He tells us how he combined the ingredients to give that air of sophistication. INSPIRATION
What was the initial brief you received from Coty? A “night” and daring version of Happy Spirit. Amira d’Amour is a celebration of everlasting love, an intense passion full of tenderness and desire. It is a fragrance for an Oriental princess – “Amira” means princess in Arabic. What were the sources of inspiration to create this fragrance? I was really inspired by the other Happy Spirit fragrances, with their distinctive sparkling top and sensual dry-down. I was also very inspired by the elegance that the brand Chopard evokes itself. I wanted to convey the oriental history of this limited edition, with its sparkling gold top that reveals the shining of love and the last rays of light that caress the golden dunes.
THE FRAGRANCE
How would you describe this fragrance in your own words? Can you give us 3 key words describing it? Sophistication, Femininity and Delight. How did you succeed to translate the values and the universe of Chopard into a fragrance? I combined precious traditional ingredients like absolute jasmine with surprising ingredients like 76
OHLALA!
honey in order to create the timeless yet trendy elegance of the brand. In addition, the olfactive structure was built around a tonka bean accord, to offer sophistication. I also created an opulent floral heart to evoke the brand’s typical richness.
THE TARGET
What is the Happy Spirit Amira d’Amour looking for when she wears it? A sophisticated and addictive trail.
DIVERSE
What are your personal sources of inspiration? I have different sources of inspiration… I’m particularly interested in food and I often try out various combinations of spices when I cook, just as I do with my fragrances creations. What are your favourite notes? I like raw materials from different olfactive families. Woody notes of cypriol, fresh aldehydes and warm balsamic notes like Tonka Bean are good examples. Do you ever wear your own creations? Why? Yes, sometimes I wear them for pleasure, during vacation, and sometimes I wear them to follow the lasting, the sillage, the impact and other technical details during a creation. www.ohlala-magazine.com

MUSIC Insight
Dana Al Fardan
& DNA Records Not only is she a talented songwriter, but an exceptional entrepreneur too. Dana Al Fardan is back with her latest project: DNA Records and Ohlala! gets all the details in an exclusive chat with the star.
How did you prepare for the concert? This concert was always in the back of our minds, even when I recorded “paint”. The first conversation I had with my producer, Tim, pretty much established our vision for the development of my music, and it always pointed to orchestral arrangements. Last year, Tim and I discussed the project in detail and laid down the groundworks to arrange songs from my previous album for an orchestra. That’s when I began to write all the new new music with that objective in mind. Tim and I have the same vision for the orchestral character of the songs, so it was a pretty natural process, whereby I would create the music and he would arrange and orchestrate it. This happened for the most part online. Moreover the conductor, Andy Brown – who worked with the London metropolitan orchestra – conducted the string segments on “paint,” so he was already familiar with the spirit of my music which made the preparation and orchestration period so much more fluid. What has been your biggest achievement as an artist, so far? Having my daughter jump every time she listens to my new song “We are the Light” and yell out: “that’s my favourite song in the whole world!” The fact that my music reaches my daughter in that way is my biggest achievement. What can we expect from you this year? 78

“ I think for Qatari talent to truly flourish, we need to pool together, and collaborate more. That is the whole point of the music festival I would like to set up.”
I am on the lookout for a vocalist. I have been writing material for an album – a little different to my usual material, something more along the electronic blues line, with the tropical house character of Kygo. Artistically, I feel like this is my direction, and once I find a suitable vocalist, I will begin recording. 4. What can we expect from DNARecords? On the label side, DNA records is scheduled to release Ryan O’Reilly’s album by this summer after his European tour. In Doha, DNA records will aim to build on the local music industry by engaging local/resident musicians in projects, collaborations and gigs. We are looking to have a music festival up and running by next year and we are working with the Youth Company in their Youth Hub to work with up and coming musicians to generate original content. I feel like that is something that could define what DNA is – the core of our activities is revolved around building and developing original content. That is what I do and what I would like to advance towards. What piece of advice would you give to a young woman who is trying to break into the music industry? I think that we create our own barriers. If what we truly want is a reality in our minds, then our actions will follow. I know its cliché, but the reason this is repeated so often is because it’s absolutely true. The key is to www.ohlala-magazine.com
believe in yourself and what you can offer. Each and every one of us is special in our own way, and we all have something to give. People will only second-guess you if you second-guess yourself. Also, most importantly, never give up! Nothing will ever be handed to you; you need a lot of persistence in this industry. What has been the toughest challenge to overcome as an entrepreneur? Developing a plan and sticking to it. The musician side of me wants the sky to be the limit and do everything at once. The business side tells me to come up with a business plan, a list of goals and objectives and a timeline – there is an ongoing conflict between both sides. What are your thoughts on the music talent in Doha? We have got what it takes; we just need more of a structure to absorb that. On that note, I just watched a recording in a beautiful new recording studio in Katara with the QPO playing the music of Wael bin Ali – a very accomplished Qatari composer. The presence of that studio will make a lot of difference in the local music scene. But also, I think for Qatari talent to truly flourish, we need to pool www.ohlala-magazine.com
together, and collaborate more. That is the whole point of the music festival I would like to set up. I feel like that’s why DFI is so strong as an institution and has been gaining strength as it really managed to access local talent and bring them together. An artist you would love to collaborate with? That’s really tough, I would like to collaborate with many different artists to achieve many different sounds and dimensions. I like variety and texture in music. What are your interests at the minute? Musically, I want to spend some time in the studio writing some new music. Besides that we also have a lot of exciting ideas and potential projects that we are working towards here in Doha, maybe another concert with the QPO or perhaps collaborating with other artists in the region but nothing set in stone yet. And as I mentioned before, we are working hard with DNA Records artist Ryan O’Reilly and he is recording his first album right now back in the UK which we hope to release later this year, so that’s really exciting!

Woman of the month
A Young Pioneer Sana Al Ansari's short film
Sana Al-Ansari debuts her short film: If They Only Knew, which has everyone talking. Sana sits with Ohlala! and opens up about erratic driving and why she made the film. Being so young, what drove you to create and go through with this film? During the Ajyal Film Festival, I watched a film that impacted me in a positive way and made me want to inspire others – it was called “Regret” by director, Dave Schram. I was aware of how many deaths were occurring in Qatar due to speeding by our youth; every day accidents were happening, people were dying and families were affected. I applied to Qatar Foundation International and was accepted to attend a service learning conference in Washington, DC where I pitched my service learning idea about making a film to raise awareness on the impact that speed has. Qatar Foundation International, through the NYLC Conference, supported me with my project; they helped me develop my idea and motivated me to start it. Once I got back, I partnered up with the Doha Film Institute and they helped me throughout the entire process: developing my ideas, the script, shoot and the edit my film. What were some challenges you had to overcome to finish this film? When I first decided to make the film the most challenging thing for me was turning my ideas into a workable script. I didn’t even know how to write a script and I didn’t have a clue what I was doing! There were so many possibilities – I had to learn so many things: camera angles, script writing, shot lists, blocking, finding a location and actors/actresses to be in my film. What can we expect from the film? ‘If They Only Knew’ is a short 6:35 minute drama that is shot in Qatar. When researching this topic, I noticed that many films were about car accidents and what happened to the driver and occupants. What I haven’t seen before is a film depicting what happens to the family, friends and acquaintances of the people involved in the accident. It is important to educate people when it comes to driving – where can we find this short-film? ‘If They Only Knew’ was recently premiered in Rota’s Empower Conference – I was very pleased, as it targeted the right age group that I was aiming for. I was invited to showcase my film and conduct a workshop with Qatar Foundation International at the NYLC Conference held back in April in Washington, DC – also I was so honoured to have been nominated for three awards: Best National Film, Best Sound and Best Editing. My sincere hope is to have my film shown to as many teenagers 80

and young adults as possible – I want to make a difference in my community. I want to spread my message wide and far. Besides your film, how do you think we need to stop erratic driving in Qatar? A platform through social media expressing people’s experiences and how they’ve been affected by erratic driving. Social media is the fastest way of making people aware. Think about your loved ones. Slow down on the roads. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Levantine Flavours Sofia Graniello heads to the latest addition to the culinary collection of Marsa Malaz Kempinski – here’s her flavourful verdict.
I
’ve always been intrigued by the Arabic culture: their traditions, customs, and tastes amongst other curiosities I’ve encountered while living in Doha. One thing I’ve come to appreciate is Arabic cuisine – its flavour, ingredients and spices that provoke a genuine desire to explore. I headed this month to Al Sufra located at Marsa Malaz Kempinski to experience an unforgettable taste. As soon as I walked in – which seemed like Aladdin’s palace – the grandiosity and power enveloped me. With a charming entrance and a well-displayed tea and sweets table, the atmosphere rapidly takes you into what feels like a Hollywood Arabesque film set. The picturesque design of the restaurant with its turquoise and rich patterns blends beautifully with the traditional Levantine flavours from: Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Palestine. Head chef, Julien Al Khal has created a menu with original recipes offering a mouthwatering mix of the Levant region cuisine. As I circled the magnificent premises of the restaurant, its luxury and style continued to strike my attention. Al Sufra not only has your typical restaurant table sets, it also has alluring water features that give the ultimate touch to an eventful night. As my night kicked off, I started off with a cold mezze dish: fattoush debs el remmen. A finely chopped blend of Mediterranean vegetables, crispy fried bread,
82
OHLALA!
sprinkled with lemon-sumac-olive oil dressing and glazed of pomegranate molasses. However, I did get a particular craving for a hot mezze dish and I was delighted with batata harra: delicious spicy fried potatoes cubes with chopped coriander and lemon. As the night progressed and the ambience started to kick off with a bit more crowd, I decided to check out the venue’s terrace – with its spectacular view of the island (because there is no other adjective that could possibly describe the scenery), I figured this venue has all it takes for a gorgeous get-away eatery. As I returned to my very full and colourful table, the main course had just arrived: hammour in clay pot. Fresh hammour slow cooked with fresh herbs and tomato. If you happen to be a chicken cuisine-lover, Al Sufra also offers: chicken makloubeh, a dish with cauliflower, eggplant and potatoes with short grain rice. Being your typical ‘sweet-tooth’ gal, I couldn’t wait for dessert time! I savoured a tasty pistachio maamoul served with oriental meringue karabich. It was the perfect ending to my Arabic night. So while I recuperate from my flavourful and lavish night, we’ll just have to wait for next month’s chic eatery adventures. Al Sufra is open from Monday-Saturday from 6.30pm – midnight. BEAT THE HEAT Working out in the great outdoors is fun and healthy, but as summer temperatures rise, do we really want to transform our workout sessions into “Bikram Bootcamp”? As a group trainer and PT living in the Middle East for over eight years, here are my top tips to keep you cool and safe as the temperatures rise.
Hydration Put some ice in your water bottle or make your own sports drink: I like to dilute freshly squeezed orange juice with an equal amount water, ice and a pinch of salt. That will hydrate and replace electrolytes lost in sweat. Our bodies react to increasing heat by sweating. When that sweat evaporates, we cool down. The body can regulate and cool itself through sweat as long as it is suitably hydrated. Once dehydration sets in, your body stores heat inside, which then raises your core temperature, and can lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Signs of dehydration and heat exhaustion include: • Light-headedness • Weakness • Dizziness • Paling of the skin • Headache • Muscle cramps • Nausea or vomiting Heat Stroke If you or your workout buddies display any of the following signs, take action immediately – heat stroke can be life threatening: • A lack of sweat or an inability to sweat • Difficulty breathing • Warm, dry, or moist skin • Strong and rapid pulse • Confusion and/or unconsciousness • High body temperature (above 103oF) • Throbbing headaches • Nausea, vomiting, or both

What to do if you or your workout buddies display the danger signs? Stop the workout immediately Cool down and fast – get into shade and apply cool, wet cloths Take sips of water If the person is still hot, incoherent, call 999 immediately. Over-hydration Remember too that over hydration can be dangerous. In extreme cases it can lead to a potentially fatal condition called hyponatremia – where sodium levels in the blood become so diluted that your cells can literally become water-logged, which can cause brain cells to swell. Hyponatremia signs and symptoms include: • Nausea and vomiting • Headache • Confusion • Loss of energy and fatigue • Restlessness and irritability • Muscle weakness, spasms or cramps • Seizures • Coma
hydrated. If it’s darker (like the colour of apple juice), drink more. How hot it too hot? There is no set temperature to say how hot is too hot or what level of humidity is too high. So for the sake of a good, safe and fun workout outside, use these top tips, think about how you feel, exercise caution and use your imagination to make you workouts fun, varied, effective and safe. And if in doubt, move it inside – it is only for a short time of the year, so keep safety your top priority.

How do I know if I’m drinking enough? Professor Tim Noakes summarised “the answer is drink as your thirst dictates” – so aim to keep thirst at bay and respond to thirst by drinking. Take a few sips every 10 minutes or so, or more frequently if you become thirsty. A good way to know that you’re hydrating properly is by checking the colour of your urine. If it’s pale yellow (lemonade), you’re well www.ohlala-magazine.com

Travel Escapes The Danes are obnoxiously good looking. Chiselled cheek bones, dishevelled hair, piercing blue eyes and their ability to speak English as if it were their native tongue make them that much more jaw-dropping. The Danes have been a hot topic since the advent of TV drama Borgen and for various other unprecedented political, social and economic movements. The 5 million petite country has a name for making big waves in all matters influential and progressive. So to find out what all the fuss is about and experience the highly slick and functional Danish design as it were, I took a few days out (because let’s face it Scandinavia makes you haemorrhage money) and went to the capital, Copenhagen to see the Little Mermaid and attempt to get a reservation at the world’s best restaurant, Noma (failed). In fact, I’m inspired to go to Copenhagen because of a book I’ve recently read, The Year of Living Danishly: Uncovering the secrets of the world’s happiest country by HelenRussell – a mentor I had when interning at Marie Claire UK. Although she’s based in Jutland or Sticksville-on-sea as she’s renamed it, there is a pervading spirit of happiness which she says branches out across the country. The train ride from the airport to the central station in itself was a happy experience –Two things that are highly necessary in 2015: a charged phone (check, each seat has a USB port) and WIFI (check check, twice for amazing speed). So far so Danish, i.e. everything works. Just as I’m picturing myself living in Copenhagen with my Scandi-issue floor boards, my oblong wall clock and a decked out kitchen consisting of top rate chef knives the Danish winter breath stabs my cheeks like said knives. It’s wet, unreasonably cold and I have to walk 15 minutes from the station to get to my hotel, happiness is in detention for now. But the moment my sodden self has crossed the hotel’s threshold, it’s as if the cold doesn’t exist anymore. Now this is not just due to the fact that I am inside and therefore not outside, but it’s got something to do with Hygge (a guttural ‘hooga’ sound) that the Danes go by each and every winter. Hygge is a concept relating to cosiness. Homes, shops, restaurants, banks and any indoor set up aims to achieve hygge by allowing you to thaw and feel warm and fuzzy. The Danes spend a lot of time indoors, so this is overtly essential. My hotel has hit all the hygge points by cocooning me in a ball of pillowy comfort and T-shirt wearing warmth. As litmus tests go, this is a strong indication of happiness. Continuing my happiness levels I brave the elements again and do the typicals: Nyhavn Harbour where I stopped for a sumptuous smorgasbord of meats and pickles and rye bread and then trail around industrial plants along the harbour. As I’m so fascinated by this survey-topping city, I walk everywhere, avoiding the metro and buses (despite their efficiency) to really get a sense of the place. Side note: Take the train to Helsingør to play at the Kronborg castle – the skyhigh ceilings practically invite you to use your lungs to effect! And, on the way back stop off at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. You’ll want to live there and buy everything. I wanted to get more of a one-on-one with the Danes themselves to put their ‘direct’ and ‘straightforward’ nature, as told by former visitors, to the test. I go to 42Raw – a vegan café (a preference of late) and find everything in, well, Danish. Of course 94
OHLALA!
the staff is able to very comfortably explain what is on the menu with colloquialisms like “if you’re peckish for..” and “another alltime favourite is…” which makes me salivate more with envy that they can be so fluid with languages. I wouldn’t say they were abrupt in their talk but they gave off a vibe of “isn’t it obvious?!” when explaining what each item was. The café is indeed hygge too with a blast of warm air greeting you as you step in and despite the general ‘fire-place’ aura felt throughout, they still had a basket of throws to go around for some extra hygge. And being as inviting as it is, it’s packed with people – Danes, not tourists, it’s 2pm, on a weekday. I’ve read that the Danes don’t let work take over; togetherness outside of the workplace is held in higher regard. On average Danes work 34 hours a week. Can I move here, please? Now every city has a fashionable, up-and-coming quarter boasting unique finds, pop-up shops and independent start-ups. I track down Nørrebro, one of the 10 official districts of walkable Copenhagen. I’m observing the Danes as if I’m ready to randomly pounce on them should someone of pique my interest – it all seems so convivial – there’s an evident growing migrant population but no polarisation as far as I can see (I have my rose tinted glasses on and they’re not coming off for now) because for every ‘Danish’ shop there are, in this district at least, Muslim and Jewish establishments too. I approach a public park, children are scuttling around, fathers (mothers in the minority) chat with other parents but I don’t see any unattended baby pram. I feel like this has become a myth expounded by the media for commotion. Away from the cluster of parents in another section of this heptagonal (of course) shaped park, is a set of unmotorised gym equipment. I can’t quite work out what they are but my intuition kicks in and I’m working out my hamstrings by the feel of things. I know the Danes have got their social and health services in surplus but this is too cool – a nice, subtle way of encouraging everyone to remain on top of their ticker. As I go deeper into the district, I find myself losing sensation in each finger. I’ve never been able to grow a pair when it comes to the cold and the fact that “this weather we’re having is really quite pleasant” chirped by the hotel staff earlier, isn’t encouraging. There really is little fault with Copenhagen. It’s clean, easy to navigate, filled with Michelin starred restaurants, alternative culture and genuinely happy people. And if you didn’t have to hide in an igloo of padded winter wear for what would seem like an eternity each year, I’d move here in a heartbeat. www.ohlala-magazine.com
5 Things The Danes Do Differently There’s a reason everyone has a fascination over the region; and being at the geographic epicentre, Denmark’s always under the microscope. Everything seems move forward in a holistic way, putting the people first. It wins at life basically.
1. National Pride
You simply cannot hoist a foreign flag (unless you’re manning an embassy) outside your home. You need prior authorisation from the police to fly another nation’s flag. True story.
2. Public Transport
On time, wide, good space between armrests and odourless lavatories (on trains). The best part is, it doesn’t cost your entire savings to move about – transport costs are surprisingly economy-friendly.
3. Cycling
Amsterdam gets all the praise for their adeptness at cycling but in Denmark the bicycle lanes are as broad as a car lane. There’s little fear of being killed.
4. Pastries
No introduction needed just an empty stomach ready for glazed decadence. Pastry shops burgeon with rafts of laminated doughy goodness with your standard but never disappointing, apple filling. Expect to go up a dress size shortly after.
5. Lamps
Every other shop in Copenhagen is a showroom of innovative bedside, lounge and hallway lamps which look intimidatingly cool. Being that for more than half the year the country is shrouded in darkness, light is a major preoccupation. www.ohlala-magazine.com

t’s early in the morning, it’s windy and we’ve been part of what seems to be a horrific sandstorm in Doha. We approach BMW’s showroom not knowing what to expect – all I want is a nice and dazzling ride. We are soon walked to our beloved new greycoloured X6 model – the first thing that comes to minds is: comfort and elegance. I’ve always had a perception of BMW to be: elegant, classy, luxurious, yet casual and fun and that’s exactly what I found with their new model. The X6 is the perfect size for someone who is familyoriented, or perhaps for that businesswoman ready to tackle the business industry. As soon as I jumped in, I felt in absolute tranquility knowing that not even traffic will wear me down – and we all know how Doha traffic can get! The inside of the car is beyond equipped with beautiful leather interiors, multimedia, screen display and many other gadgets at your fingertip. At times one may get a bit apprehensive with the excess of buttons in a car, however, this car removes any reservation and facilitates the ride to your destination. For those mums that have a busy schedule and are running up-and-down, this is the type of car you would want to get – safety is written all over the ensemble of this wonderful car. The safety measurements placed in the X6 and the technology have been carefully built in – it’s undeniably out of this world. The X6 model not only has a reverse and frontal camera, but also, it carries sensors and an overall view of the car, giving the driver the option of seeing the full size of the car on-screen with its surroundings. However, if you thought that was the ‘cherry on top’ wait until you sit in the driver’s seat and encounter an exceptional driving experience. For instance: the speed screen is an all-digital display and the car offers three mode types: Eco Pro, efficient driving; Sport, dynamic driving; and comfort mode. For those who love to adventure, the X6 offers two types of changing gears: wheel paddles and stick paddle, leaving the driver to decide its own comfort. Another great feature that I found quite useful for all thing safety, was the vibration of the steering wheel when changing lanes. If you’re scared of speeding in the city and don’t know your limit – this car ensures the driver’s speeding limit with a special on-screen reflection on the frontal window with the speed limit of the area and the driver’s current speed – making it easy and visible for the driver. The BMW X6 2015 model is perfect for anyone who is looking for comfort, elegance and safety when driving. The accelerator and breaks ensure to protect your every move on the road. It was utterly a great experience taking this model up for a ride in the busy streets of Doha. www.ohlala-magazine.com

It was not Milan’s Fashion Week, or London’s for that matter – but Doha shed some light on creative new designers ready to enrich Qatar’s fashion scene. VCUQatar presented their Annual Fashion Show with innovative and visionary local and international students in a 60min show. ‘Thread’ being the title of the show started off with children’s wear collections designed by sophomores. Alluring calm colour palettes created by combining: denim, lace, embroidery, hand painting, floral patterns, polka dots and stripes were all part of their designs. It was followed by the junior collections with inspiring and playful themes such as: jellyfish, wild movement, contemporary architecture and weathered Omani surfaces. Also, alternative combinations included: Pakistani truck art and concept cars, ancient Egyptian and Celtic knots, European armour, insect shells and Roman architecture with chains. The night went up a knotch when the senior collections were ready for the catwalk. The collections were an eclectic mix of day to evening looks reflecting the individual aesthetic of each student. Each collection consisted of six key looks highlighting their creative flair.. Malia Bennett Henry – senior designer – created impact with her ‘Manic Depression’ collection inspired by a topic we should all be raising awareness for: depression. “It is a very common disorder riddle with societal miscomprehension and personal guilt and selfjudgment,” added the young designer. The designs were also a reflection inspired by the expressive artist: Jackson Pollock. Malia collaborated with two students from the printing and printmaking department for the pieces. “Each print is unique and slowly progresses to angrier and more manic lines,” concludes the artist. On the other side of the spectrum, Tamader Alsultan ‘blooms’ away with a fresh and colorful collection. “My senior collection is a metaphorical representation of my journey. In my four years at VCUQatar I have been planting this seed and growing it, until I finally blossomed and now it is spring – my spring. This is the spring where I give myself the chance to bloom and explore,” said the young artist. Creativity, design and innovation were key concepts for the annual show, making Qatar’s fashion industry that much more authentic.

Fabric manipulation, pattern making and vivid colours is what we find in Saadia Khabab’s latest collection. ‘Suroor’ is the name of the collection of Saadia’s masterpiece, which also showcased at VCU’s Fashion Show. However, the fashion designer has an interesting twist to her latest work: fabric manipulation and digital printing. “I was experimenting with the digital printing fabrics. I found it very interesting how shapes and patterns change – that is how I came up with the technique. After that, I experimented on several fabrics and chose the one that was most favourable to my patterns,” added the talented designer. The visionary designer has been working to get thrilling results on her superb designs by using net and stretchy fabrics that were part of her personal patterns and printings. When asking the designer what was her creative process behind the making of these fabric manipulations, she added: “I started off by making simple box pleats, after that I stitch them with my hands. I press so they remain equal, later adding my pattern on top and I cut, stitching the pattern to my garments.” Being a very precise and tedious job, Saadia hopes to develop her passion for textile manipulation in the fashion industry. “I really want to learn how to use high technology in my textiles and garments because it has a great demand in the fashion market. Also it is eco-friendly, user friendly, cost effective, lightweight and durable. I want to use this technique to make garments more comfortable and wearable, so people can use them on a daily basis, not just on runways.” Keep an eye on this textile guru!
Initial stages of Dania’s garment
Petite Dania exudes elegance and simplicity at first sight. The fashion designer showcased her collection at VCU’s Fashion Show last month as a junior at the prominent university under the sportswear category. ‘Penelope’ is the name of her four-garment collection, which was inspired by Greek mythology. “I always look to portray the femininity and strength of a woman at the same time. Through my research on Greek mythology I chose Penelope as my main character who symbolises: faith, purity, loyalty and strength through her acts,” stated the young designer. Her collection just like herself portrays: simplicity, bold and femininity. When asking Dania about her personal style, she added: “I think my style pretty much describes the character that I chose, it’s very simple, yet bold and structural.” We can expect: draping, structures, rigidness with a touch of feminine flow with a palette of pink and purple in Dania’s collection. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Lady Sadie’s Emporium Sarah Derrig, Qatar’s future promising blogging-star gave us the latest scoop on her latest project: BloggingME - a platform for bloggers in the Middle East.
Australian blogger, Sarah Derrig
If you happen to know Sarah, we’d be able to agree on a couple of things: she’s cheerful, colourful and fun to be around. The Australian blogger has made quite an impact in the blogging-scene in Qatar – not only has she created ‘Lady Sadie’s Emporium,’ but also a blogging community to expand and enrich other bloggers called: BloggingME. “I started blogging as a way of getting my creative juices flowing again. I worked for years in the advertising industry and missed the creativity.” If you are curious enough and are a blog fanatic, Lady Sadie’s Emporium offers: lifestyle tips and her devotion for fashion, food and design. “I love sharing my outfits because I really am an everyday girl, I don’t have supermodel looks or a supermodel body so my readers can relate a lot to me and what I wear.” However, this advertisement master decided to step-in and take charge of what was lacking in Qatar: blogging agencies that supported and acted as agents for bloggers and brands. “There was nothing like that here in the Middle East. My business partner, Kirsty Rice and I wanted very much to create a community for bloggers in the Middle East and that was how BloggingME was born,” says the Australian blogger. Sarah understands the business and knows what it takes to be a full-time blogger: “To me blogging is about building your tribe, building a community and sharing the love; bloggers supporting other bloggers. I think blogging in Qatar is getting bigger and bigger and I love that I’m part of that.” Sarah has focused her goals on enriching BloggingME and her new podcast show: Two Fat Expats. “I am having an absolute blast recording our show each week and I love working with other bloggers to build our community.” We can agree Sarah and her work is nothing but pure fun.

The Bliss
For Interior Design There is nothing more delightful than having strong, independent women chatting about their passions, goals and ambitions. Chahrazade Rizk, founder of Tec Interior Design gave us an insight into what it takes to be a creative, visionary and inspiring woman. What is your profession? My vocation is interior design. I founded my company Tec Interior Design back in 2004. Your biggest passion? It’s décor! Overall, it’s a passion of creating great custom-made furniture with a purpose of giving someone his or her own personal universe. When were you first interested in interior design? After my studies in fine arts, I started to notice my passion for interior design once I started building and developing my own residences. It was on the field that I discovered the importance of interior design. What are your thoughts about interior decor in Qatar? In Doha, I would have to say that the majority of my clients love the world of ‘French luxury’; they love having their custom-made furniture; everything and anything that gives an elegant and sophisticated look. What’s your day to day life like? I don’t think I could even begin to describe a www.ohlala-magazine.com
typical day! They are absolutely different from one day to the other. However, they all start at 5.30am with my coffee and my prepping for the day. I always have breakfast with my kids before they go to school. And then an attack of meetings, clients, design… ten thousand things to do at the same time follows. As for my nights, I like to conclude them with a small analysis of the day. My world basically revolves around creativity and commercial activity; my art of living would be looking at my own distinguished identity. Your favourite jewellery pieces? Watches: Audemars Piguet and Rolex. What would you say your decor style is? Eclectic. It’s a mix between classic and contemporary. Your favourite place in Doha to dine at? Hakkasan. A tip on how to furnish a brand new home? A great piece of advice: take notice of interior design! Beauty lies within details. OHLALA! 105

Miss Ohlala! 1. He will call Let’s be honest, nowadays it’s so comfortable and efficient to talk via Whatsapp: how was his day? Where is he now? The usual information – however, from personal experience, chats may cause unnecessary fights and overdue stress to the relationship. A real man will call when he starts to notice things falling over the cliff – he will make sure to explain any possible misinterpretation. A boy will leave the convo and say: “What a drama queen!”
2. He knows what commitment is all about A boy makes promises, but never succeeds in keeping them – they all say: “I promise I won’t do it again.” Do they really mean it? A real man knows exactly what commitment is all about and won’t make promises if he can’t keep. He knows what a promise means to a girl and will not promise something he won’t be able to keep. A boy will only tell you what you want to hear without thinking about the repercussions.
3. He knows honesty is vital for relationships to work My last relationship fell apart due to the lack of trust. He was an immature boy not knowing what to do with a woman who demanded honesty. Ladies, a real man won’t tell you his every move of his day, however, he will make sure you know the necessary info without being shady!
5 SIGNS YOU’RE
DATING A MAN NOT A BOY In today’s hookup culture it’s so easy to forget what chivalry and true dating is like. Gone are the days where men would come and ring the doorbell to your house with a beautiful bouquet of flowers – now, it’s all about quick dates and Snapchat adventures. I, for instance, crave courtship and what seems to be quickly evaporating, dating real men.

4. He will make other girls jealous of you, not the other way around There is a thin line between your partner’s friends (which happen to be girls), and girls who flirt with your man and let’s be real: it can get pretty intimidating! No matter how much self-confidence a girl has, if your man isn’t giving you the respect among his family and friends – doubts and insecurities may arise. A real man will make sure to make you feel like you’re the only queen in his life (besides his mom, of course) and will have everyone feeling jealous of you! A boy (for sure!) will have separate e-mails, hidden messages, quick encounters with random ‘friends’ every month – leaving you jealous of his friends.
5. He is secure of what he has, yet, he knows a relationship requires daily maintenance There is nothing more attractive than a man who exudes confidence. A real man knows what he wants, and appreciates what he has and is very much aware of the daily maintenance a relationship is all about. A boy on the other hand gets comfortable in his ‘throne’ and doesn’t know what he has until he loses that special girl. www.ohlala-magazine.com
