EDITOR’S
LETTER
Calling all brides-to-be! We’re all for the classic creations that reference the bridal gowns of the past, but there’s just something so invigorating about the modern garments of the future. And while we’ve always admired the collective work of our (and your!) favourite designers, we’ll admit that it’s a particularly good time to be a bride. The reason? These new styles offer a brand-new perspective on big-day fashion, and are elements that a couture-loving woman of the moment is sure to love. If these trends are any indication, it’s clear that, when it comes to choosing a wedding dress, brides are having more fun than ever before. That’s not to say, though, that classic brides can’t get in on the fun. Romantic off-the-shoulder sleeves, high, Victorian-inspired necklines and collars, and embroidery are just a few of the more refined twists on the traditional wedding dress. As a bride-to-be myself, this issue has added additional inspiration to my forever changing bridal mood board. I promise I haven’t turned into a bridezilla, but, there’s time yet!

GYPS-OPHELIA is an event styling company founded by KATIE DEARDEN in December 2018. The entire concept of event styling came to Katie when she was doing the legwork for her own wedding. Using her degree in textiles and the natural flair for styling, Katie decided to start this venture with Festive Period and National Day wreaths. Word of mouth travelled fast and from wreaths, the business extended to styling baby showers. This is when the idea of expansion came about and Antonia Britton joined the company. Using Antonia’s knowledge in 3D concepts, the two got their creative forces together and developed various ideas. Following the worldwide trends, they decided to bring a unique concept of flower walls to Doha. Items such as centerpieces, flower arches, and flower walls completely transformed various weddings and baby showers. A favourite for backdrops, the flower walls became an instant hit. The business specialises in home and commercial installations too, and the ladies make sure a personal touch is always there, to make it all the more special. Vouching to bring customer ideas to reality, Gyps-Ophelia is open to new challenging ideas that will enhance any occasion. ongratulations on your collaboration with the Bouqs company! Can you tell us a little about this venture? My prints are floral, my laces and basically everything that I touch is floral. It was a smooth transition for me to come up with my own collection of bouquets. The reason I launched this in the first place was through inspiration garnered from my big wedding following and adding this gives the bride one less thing to worry about. She can choose from the four different packages I offer to collate something unique. I always do these collaborations because I want my brand to be very inclusive and I want to be accessible to my customers thus this was the right way to go. Let’s talk about your Bridal Spring/Summer collection 2019 – do you have any favourites? I have a few, yes! I completed the collection earlier than expected and I am so excited to share it. My favourite is an all lace ball gown. It adorns a drop waist that comes with a cape jacket that goes over it, which looks like a veil with an extended train which I find absolutely gorgeous. I call it Masterpiece because I feel like this is the ultimate exquisite piece that you can wear to the ceremony, and when you take the jacketcape off, it’s strapless! I also like designing wedding dresses that have colour in them so this collection you will see a barrage of greens and whites, embodying a very garden-like vibe. I have incorporated this throughout the collection. Another new addition is a ‘high-low’ design as I want the girls to show a little leg. We focus a lot on every single detail of the wedding, including the footwear, but, because of the length of the gown, that is usually completely hidden. So, with this cut, I want to put this option there for my brides - to allow for versatility. Another addition that I love is the sheer long sleeves that I feel looks more sensual as opposed to having nothing at all. I feel they give a regal and elevated look and these are the key trends that I am pushing for.
“I call it Masterpiece because I feel like this is the ultimate exquisite piece that you can wear to the ceremony, and when you take the jacket-cape off, it’s strapless!” What is your design process when you are searching for new trends for your collections? For me, the process starts with putting mood boards together. I collage a mood board before I source fabrics, and I gravitate towards things that I have not used previously, and then, I develop new embroideries for my lace. Once I have all the aforementioned things, I drape the materials over a model’s body to allow my ideas come to life when they’re placed on a 3D dimension compared to a sketch on a paper. So, once I have the idea, I tell my pattern maker about what I am feeling. The process for me is more tactile, I like to touch and drape before I decide on anything. Once we have a muslin, then I start with the cuts. Where does inspiration come from? I am inspired by just living every day. Inspiration comes to me in all forms; it could come from a design, let it be floral, interior design, an art piece, and even at times, my past collections. It comes from all over, I can never pin-point it. What do you believe sets your brand apart from in the industry? I believe that the reason my brand has longevity is because I am 52

for five years, I felt like I needed colour in my life and that is how my evening wear collection came about. I have been very lucky in the sense that celebrities approach me when they want to look a certain way and together, we create the momentum of the brand. I am so proud to say that in all these years; I have never paid a celebrity to wear our dresses and this is all very much an organic thing. It’s still a journey. Do you have any other collaborations in the pipeline? I do, however, I cannot say much about them. I think I want to step into the beauty space as it is very much a part of the brand’s story and certainly something I am looking into. Watch this space. authentic to what I like. When you see my design, you know it’s mine because I am very consistent and true to my design process. I always want my bride to shine in my dress and not be overpowered by it. You don’t even notice the dress first, it is always about the essence of the woman and only then do you look at the details of the dress and you can see that it’s my work, but, it is always understated elegance. That, I believe, is the key to my success. You told us that you have two collections a year. How many brides do you normally dress up? I don’t accept more than 15 custom dresses a year because I am very involved in the entire process. I just physically cannot take more than that. So, after we make those 15 appointments, we wait another year before accepting the next batch. We know how you dress celebrities for the red carpet, so, how did you choose bridal wear to start with? When you initially had chosen this path, did you realise that this would become your niche? No, I never had a game plan. I started bridal wear mostly because of my own wedding where I was a very active participant and wanted to make sure the details were correct to the very last detail. I was a young bride looking for a wedding dress and the whole process was challenging. I felt like there was a niche in the market that I could fill - so I did. ell us about the Alice Temperley’s signature throughout the collection. For us, it is always about comfort. No matter what the embellishment is, we always want comfort to be the first priority. I always hope to create timelessly classic pieces, so, when I design, I never focus on making seasonal fashion. I want my customers to use these pieces in various ways and not treat them as if they are something precious. I want to create different looks using one item and enjoy what they’re wearing. Wear them with a sense of ease. How do you decide on the names of your collections? Sometimes, I just know what I want to call my collections. Like my collection coming out in September, I knew I wanted to call it Opium. I had a very clear image of what I wanted it to look like, where I wanted it shot and how I wanted to go about it. For the Summer collection, I knew exactly what theme I wanted and how I wanted it to be influenced by certain paintings. Then, there are collections we name that are inspired by the design process. What inspires your mood board and what is your design process? We design our collections a whole year in advance and we always start with a feeling and theme. How do I want my muse to feel? Our muse is the same woman but we always want to know where she’s going, how she’s feeling, what shapes is she looking at and what colours and fabrics does she need to be seen in. Her daywear has to be different than the eveningwear, which is more decadent and frivolous and she wears it in a very Temperley way. We are introducing daywear now which needs to be more functional with a point of difference, using the reference of the theme of reflections so we have a mixture of masculine and feminine cuts with a few accessories, such as aviators, which make you feel like she’s vibing in the 1940’s.
“I don’t follow the trends at all. I travel a lot and I go to places which are up-to-date with music, film, and culture. If you’re living in that environment you pick up what is happening better in terms of colours and cuts.” For the Summer Collection, we are never as specific, but, we know what element we need in there. This was a feeling of colour, flavor, and graphics. We made paintings around the mood board and started in a very textile way as we tested these prints on jacquard as well. We design everything in the studio; the prints are all crafted by hand and we like that we have this differentiation in the market. Where do you look to spot ‘trends’ and how do you incorporate that in your own style? I don’t follow the trends at all. I travel a lot and I go to places which are up-to-date with music, film, and culture. If you’re living in that environment you pick up what is happening better in terms of colours and cuts. I feel like keeping up with trends is not the designer’s role, it’s the high street’s role. You have to do what you feel you should be doing which makes my pieces timeless because I have my own point of view. I see a lot of sequins work in your collection. What other materials and accessories do you work with which are your ultimate favourite? I love experimenting with lots of beautiful 1940’s crepes as they are a favourite for me. I love making decorative clothes and that is the direction for us when it comes to eveningwear. We do a lot of tailoring, like big shearling and we have to see what is right for this climate. We have different choices for daywear and eveningwear but the fantasy ultimately comes true through eveningwear. What inspired the colour palette for this collection? It comes from the paintings, from the research and from the references of these points. For Summer, for example, the prints were all done in a completely different tone as the colours were bright so the paintings that the designers did were basically the reference points for us. We might pull softer lilacs or unusual greens; it all depends on the collection. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Especially the new store, it feels very contemporary. It’s nice to see the market react this way to our collections because we can see that they love dressing up! How do you feel about expanding your business to Qatar at Place Vendome? We are so excited about this! There are so many people now visiting Doha and it just shows how the country is coming on the map with everything; fashion, art, and film is certainly coming into focus. Do you have any collaborations in the near future? We have just done the first ever designer collaboration with British Airways First Class. What else should we look out for when it comes to your label? We’re very excited about the new collection that’s coming out in September. We want to become more sustainable and we want to celebrate our classic pieces, the heritage, the women, and, of course our muses. We are doing things our own way now and we’re very excited to show that to the world.

L’Occitane has always loved the rose and their new Eau de Toilette is a “Central Rose” that captures the quintessence of the Provençal rose in a dazzling, elegant fragrance that is both absolutely feminine and resolutely modern. Opening with notes of pink pepper, accompanied by lychee and raspberry accords, the fragrance gives way to an utterly rosy heart. Rosa Centifolia infusion from Grasse, obtained using an exclusive technique that fuses modernity with tradition, mingles with Rosa Damascena absolute, rounded out by violet leaf absolute. BRIDAL GLOW ANGELA BEITZ EXPLAINS ALL THE BEST TIPS FROM WHEN TO SCHEDULE FACIALS AND TREATMENTS AS WELL AS BEAUTY BASICS TO GIVE YOU THAT BRIDAL GLOW
FLAWLESS SKIN
If there’s ever been a time to get your skincare regime into full gear then this is it. You should be cleansing you skin twice a day, no excuses and exfoliating twice a week with a low irritant exfoliator. Invest in the highest quality anti-aging day and night creams you can afford and don’t forget that serums are so important (you can even layer different ones for best results.
SAVE FACE
Regular facials will also your boost your skin and have your skin looking luminous and glowy by the time the big day comes around. Book one around every four to six weeks in the six months leading up to your wedding. Start with deep cleansing facials and ones that include exfoliation and lead up to super hydrating and calming facials. If you aren’t used to having facials go for ones aims at sensitive skin that will nourish and hydrate your skin.
TRIAL AND ERROR
Take your time to book your hair and make-up artist as this is a very key aspect of your look for the big day. Make sure you do a practice run of your hair and beauty look so that if you don’t like it, you still have time to change it. Be sure to speak up if you are unhappy about something, they want you to be happy as much as you do.
GET ORGANISED
It goes without saying but book your manicure, pedicure and spray tan if you want one in advance and leave time (two days) before the big day. 66
www.ohlala-magazine.com
To save time book them in the one location if you can, or within walking distance. Go with what you know, this is not a time to experiment with dramatic new looks or over the top beauty looks.
FRESH TRESSES
If you’re happy with your hair’s length get a trim two weeks before so that it’s in in tip top shape come the big day. If you’re brave enough, do get an extra centimeter off a month before so that when you reach the wedding date your tresses still look refreshed. If you can bear it, lay off the styling tools to give your hair a break and nourish your hair with a hair mask twice a week.

BEAUTY Insight
Smart Beauty Dr. SungJae Jung, a soft spoken and driven young doctor, has always had a passion for innovation and a genuine care for the well-being of his patients. In 2001, he was running his own clinic in Seoul, Korea after earning his M.D and becoming a certified dermatologist. He spent each day creating and testing for the safest and most effective skin care formulas for severe skin issues.Chin Wook Lee, a close family friend of Dr. Jung and young entrepreneur, was impressed by Dr. Jung’s spirit and expertise, and ventured to bring Dr. Jung’s formulas out of the clinic, into the mainstream. Chin Wook worked tirelessly between Dr. Jung’s clinic, laboratories, and personal advisors to develop a new skin care company. After three years of development, in 2004, Dr. Jung and Chin Wook Lee launched the now very well known Dr. Jart+ brand. Tell us how the Dr Jart brand started? On a quest to find a product “that would amaze consumers worldwide” the trained architect decided the beauty space was the place to be. As he was looking for products that hadn’t been seen before, he came across blemish balm in a South Korean skin-care clinic. It was 2004, and the concept of a skincare-makeup hybrid was new, developed for South Korean women looking to shorten their beauty routine as they entered the workforce. And that was the first step of Dr.Jart. What is the vision of the brand? Dr.Jart is a dermatological cosmetic brand rooted in science and drawing inspiration from art to create a healthy beauty. Dr.Jart pursues “healthy beauty” as its utmost goal, through its rational and emotional approach to prescription.
In the early 2000s, beauty experts realised that the modern and innovative technology used in cosmetics and dermatology in Korea is the most advanced in the world. Korea has taken the lead as the new skincare superpower and K-Beauty is the innovation driver within the cosmetics industry. Angela Beitz speaks to Chin Wook Lee, CEO of popular Korean beauty brand, Dr.Jart.
68
www.ohlala-magazine.com
The company invests its efforts in researching and promoting the value of healthy beauty to our contemporary lifestyles. How did you develop your brand? Dr.Jart means Doctor Join Art, as it’s described by its brand name, Dr.Jart has been developing highly functional derma cosmetics and introducing them in the unique and artistic way of communication. And here is Dr.Jart’s competitive and popular factor which is differentiated branding that has been steadily building, while finding new ways that no other brands have tried before. What does ‘good skincare’ mean to you? Dr.Jart believes that a fundamental healing can be achieved when balance is struck between rational healing, based on scientific methods, and emotional healing, rooted in culture and inspiration, which then leads to the goal of the brand. Moreover, as mentioned before, Dr.Jart pursues “healthy beauty” as its utmost goal, through its rational and emotional approach to prescription. Therefore, Dr.Jart has been investing its efforts in researching and promoting the value of healthy beauty to our contemporary lifestyles.

BEAUTY Insight
Why do you think Korean beauty has become so popular? Korea consumers are very sensitive to the new trend, have very low loyalty to brand since they prefer to try advanced-technology and new concepts while expecting outstanding performances. So, if your brand is survived in Korean cosmetics market, it means your brand has certain competitiveness in global market. However, if the Korean beauty brands have been attracting much attention since the popularity of the Korean culture such as K-pop, the technology, and numerous ideas for products, now, having the powerful brand identity is much more important. Especially, only brands which have strong brand identity, such as Dr.Jart has been building their own DNA continuously without jumping on the K-beauty will grow even more with their potential. What are the most popular products from the Dr Jart range and why? We would say it’s Cicapair and Ceramidin. Depends on the countries and region, there would be little difference, but they are the most popular line from Dr.Jart. Dr.Jart always look for the new ingredients trend, and what are consumers’ needs, so it leads to make outstanding products. And especially in the Middle East, there are many fans of our masks, rubber masks and sheet masks. It is definitely because of environmental factors, but also its simple and effective way to pamper the skin. And, also, Dr.Jart masks are designed to ensure optimal combination between formulation and its sheet material for each skin concern. What are the key ingredients in your products that make them work? Dr.Jart pursues the development of healthy and safe products by conducting a thorough regime of research and testing. We aim to gain the trust of our fans by offering them the safest and healthiest products possible. And there are key ingredients, Ceramides in Ceramidin and Centella Asiatica extract in Cicapair. The Centella Asiatica extract is for trouble/irritated skin, and it is excellent in soothing, recovery, and rejuvenation. And Ceramide ingredient is for dry/damaged barrier skin, and major component of intercellular lipid on Stratum Corneum (a.k.a Skin barrier) By strengthening skin barrier, make the skin stronger and never dries out. This region is known for its harsh environmental factors - what advice would you give for looking after your skin under these circumstances? Where has the harsh environment with high temperature and dryness, the outdoor circumstances are very dry, and indoors are cool and dry as well due to the air conditioning. When this situation is repeated, the moisture is taken away from skin and moisture retention is getting reduced. Therefore, moisture the skin with moisturizing products should be needed to enhance the moisture retention, and Dr.Jart’s Ceramidin collection is an ultimate 70
www.ohlala-magazine.com
moisturizer to deliver the enough moisture deep into the skin. This Ceramidin collection is a ceramide-based skincare range for deep moisture. Ceramides are our skin’s natural protection barrier, and are composed of intercellular lipids that act as the skin’s defense against environmental aggressors and help to maintain moisture levels. The range is now supercharged with a 5-Cera Complex, exclusive to Dr.Jart. This patented ceramide stabilization technology ensures microencapsulated ceramides are able to penetrate deeper into the lipid layer, enhancing the skin’s natural strength and ensuring it stays deeply moisturized throughout the day. What’s next for the brand? Spread Dr.Jart’s differentiated healthy energy all around world. Especially, for this year, we’re targeting Asia’s largest market, China, that has the purchasing power. And we will strengthen our branding and establish ourselves as one of the most popular brands in each country. In particular, we are planning to introduce new products of Dr.Jart in many European countries by strengthening local analysis and marketing in a European market where entry barriers are very high and difficult to maintain. Also, now we are planning to launch new products in the Middle East soon. www.drjart.com

LUCKY’S CHARM
Pursuing her passion for makeup and making a career out of it, makeup artist LUCKY is all about focusing on her bride’s features and making them all the more glamorous. Making her mark in the industry with her exemplary skills, this beauty shares with us a few tips amongst her secrets for a flawless, dewy look.
SKIN ICING When you make your grand entrance walking down the aisle, a clean and freshlooking complexion is a must. So, proper skin preparation is important to ensure that your wedding makeup stays put. In addition to the usual cleanse, exfoliation and moisturising regimen, something that this artist recommends is to get into the habit of ‘skin icing’. ‘Skin icing’ is routinely performed by Korean women and several other cultures which literally involves applying ice to one’s skin. The practice helps with the following skin challenges: • Reduces puffiness • Prevents wrinkles • Tightens the skin • Reduces the appearance and size of pores • Produces smoother skin • Lessens the appearance of scarring • Treats and prevents acne Icing the skin is helpful with various skin issues such as inflammation on the skin surface, reducing swelling and redness, and acne. It also reduces healing time as well as preventing future breakouts as it is considered antibacterial. THE DEWY BRIDE STEP-BY-STEP BY LUCKY ALLURE
Prepping the skin
Cleanse & exfoliate Skin Icing (use tissues to dry your face) Moisturise according to the bride’s skin It is usually recommended for the bride to use her own moisturiser so that her skin does not take time to get used to the new products 72
www.ohlala-magazine.com
Mariobadesu Facial Spray The spray is induced with herbs and rose water so you have to let it dry for a few seconds.
Choosing your primer
Charlotte Tilbury brightening youth glow primer is a favourite because of its colour-correcting and moisturising properties that help even the skin tone and blur away blemishes. With genius ingredients including chlorella and Vitamin B3, this brightening face primer is the perfect base for your makeup.
Foundation
Giorgio Armani foundations are ideal on European brides as they don’t give a caked-up effect. In this photo shoot the model is wearing foundation number 4. A stippling brush from MAC was used, and then used a beauty blender to set the foundation
Powder and Setting
The mellow yellow shade from the makeup store was used to ‘set’ the foundation for this bride
Glow It Up
A glowing, dewy look is always in style for any bride! ‘Backlighting all over glow’ from Bassam Fattouh mixed with the MAC limited edition kabuki magic cream shimmer Gypsum – a golden champagne pearl with silver reflects in a cream colour base, which never fails when achieving the desired look. Rhea – a pink-coral cream colour base from the same kabuki palette as the blusher was also used.
Eyes
Using MAC’s Lingering Great Brows Kit, enhance the fullness of the eyebrows, and with the blessings of the Huda Beauty Rose Gold eye shadow palette you can achieve your desired blend. Inglot gel liner was used for the simple eyeliner alongside MAC mascara with a simple set of false lashes to complete the look.
Lips
MAC’s lip liner ‘Soar’ with MAC’s ‘Please Me’ lipstick was topped off with a little shimmer.
Completing The Look
MAC setting spray is used to set the makeup but you need to let it dry for a couple of minutes. Always make sure to keep some Emilia Blot Film sheets close by to dab your skin especially if your skin gets oily or sweaty. This is in fact a big life saver for any beauty bag.

THE ULTIMATE ESCAPE MANDARIN ORIENTAL, Doha is a self proclaimed ‘intimate and stylish retreat located in the heart of Msheireb Downtown Doha’, but, believe us when we say that it is all that and so much more.
76
www.ohlala-magazine.com
F
rom the moment you enter MANDARIN ORIENTAL, DOHA, located on Barahat Msheireb, the focal point of Msheireb Downtown Doha, you feel the sense of exclusivity exuding from this hotel. You’ll leave the central city location and enter in to a calming eastern influenced wellness journey. The spa itself is on Level B2 of the hotel, where I promptly made my way. As you come out of the elevator you’re greeted by the ornate decor and the welcoming staff. The beautifully lit hallways only elevates the sense of calmness and encapsulates you in its aura. I made my way into the reception area where I was warmly greeted to The Spa. Although I was running a little late for my appointment there was no acknowledgement of this by the receptionist and she proceeded as if we had all the time in the world. Exactly what I’d expect from a high-end spa. Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s spa philosophy encompasses a holistic approach to wellness for the body, mind and spirit. It is based on the Orient’s ancient philosophy and understanding of the mystic properties of balancing the five elements, and as soon as you enter the spa area you’re transported into this hospitality induced mantra. The lounge and rooms further build on this, offering guests light snacks, including delicious bespoke welcoming detoxifying drinks and tea. This combination was a hit! I was provided with ‘sliders’ at this stage to adorn my ‘tootsies’ for my impending use of the wet facilities prior to my treatment. After a stressful social calendar I I decided to make use of the indoor pool and the adorning areas to optimise my sacred alone time - a privilege that I’m not afforded very often. The changing room and spa has all of the items and amenities that you’d usually expect but they go the extra mile, which is synonymous with the MO brand including some hair appliances that will allow for you to transition from spa to office seamlessly. What I wasn’t expecting in the adjacent facilities was their Experience Shower - and oh my,
what an experience that was! There are a range of settings that replicate the atmospheric state of the rainforest to allow you to be immersed in a world far away, with a varying alternation of hot and cold pulsating settings that range from a mist to an intense pressure, allowing for the optimum showcase. All of this is elevated with the sounds of exotic birds and thunderous lighting simulations. An absolute must. The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Doha takes a bespoke approach to wellness, tailoring the time guests spend with them by recommending treatments to address their specific needs. So, after rotating throughout the 3,030 sqm consisting of six treatment rooms, one couples suite and two VIP suites alongside other unique areas, such as their consultation lounge, tea lounge, heat and water experiences, spa pools, and their relaxation lounge…. well, it is fair to say that one felt thoroughly relaxed as time passed enjoying said common areas prior to my treatment. They encourage guests to book ‘Time’, allowing their Spa Concierge to plan the perfect spa journey, whether that’s for pampering and relaxation, relieving body aches, promoting sleep or looking your best for any occasion. It’s hard not to envelop yourself in the ambience here which pays homage to the heritage of Qatar. As my ‘Time’ was catered for I was collected and escorted to my treatment www.ohlala-magazine.com
77
room where I enjoyed the Singing Sand Dunes experience. It is important to say that this is perhaps the most unique treatment and experience with healing properties, uplifting the mind and spirit, attuning the body’s rhythm to a tranquil state by promoting regeneration and improving circulation. My legs suffer badly from water retention so I was thankful that it was able to alleviate that dull sense of throbbing. The magical experience started with the soothing resonance of Himalayan singing bowls throughout the treatment to help clear and calm the mind whilst the body exfoliation promotes regeneration for a more radiant feel - the choice of scent is an added benefit. The Spa has many essential oil blends locally created for them. I opted for the refreshing orange blend that had me vocally ‘mmm-ing’ as my therapist offered me a choice of said signature blends after my welcoming foot ritual. It’s necessary to add that this foot ritual is symbolic of the Asian practice of leaving bad energy at the door before stepping foot in to a new premise. As I lay upon the bed ready for my body scrub, I was greeted by the most wonderful cooling gel face cushion as I lay down. This thoughtful touch allowed me to drift off comfortably and take in the mystic energy and optimal pressure from the warm quartz sand crystals 78
www.ohlala-magazine.com
that lay beneath me. The temperature in the room and the bed were perfect. It was by far one of the most comfortable massage beds I have experienced. After showering, I enjoyed a tailored massage which promotes circulation throughout the body and joints to bring healing properties, amidst the alluring noise that protruded from the himalayan singing bowls. The heated quartz sand crystals were gathered underneath me to elevate particular pressure points of my body, and it certainly proved uniquely beneficial. Like most things, all good things have to come to an end but they ensured that my face was not left out and they completed my treatment with a facial that had me glowing - amidst a cheshire cat smile that I could not hold back from as I lounged in their relaxation zone. Truly this was the most innovative and enjoyable treatment that I have ever had the privilege of experiencing. What renders the heart more-so is that the therapists at The Spa have specifically created this in-house treatment for their clientele. My calves thanked me. My neck thanked me. My body thanked me. Choosing a dining option is certainly no mean feat as I had the choice of nine food and beverage outlets. I settled on IZU as my palette was succumbing to the tantalisting idea of savouring modern Mediterranean cuisine with layers of flavours inspired by the travel of Chef Izu. Everything from the service, presentation and taste was flawless. I even stepped out and enjoyed desert at another outlet, thirsty to explore more. Gelato was where I settled which unleashed feelings of nostalgia with toffee popcorn adorned ice cream as the sun began to set. The onyx overlay of the building danced under the sunlight. The Barahat Square is unique as it is a climate controlled courtyard with lights that act as a temperature regulator in this cosmopolitan district - the first of its kind. Barahat Lounge overlooks this vicinity and their Afternoon Tea is popular with 12 tea blends that are purposely made for their hotel in Doha. Whether you are coming for a spa getaway, dining experience or indeed to check-into one of their 158 guestrooms (117 rooms and 41 suites) or to book one of their 91 serviced apartments (1 to 4 bedrooms), one thing for sure is that you will fall head-over-heels in love. With their blend of chic and contemporary design with touches of Qatari heritage it is easy to see why. Their attention-to-detail is phenomenal. Corridors even act as a modern interpretation of thatched roofs reminiscent of the pearling era amidst oryx horns adorning doors as their handles, which is thoughtfully further included within their awe-inspiring Baharat Suite. David Collins design studio are behind such interior designs, including the floor design being influenced by the local sand dunes. Alexander Le Monte has collaborated on certain independent pieces throughout the hotel with straw marquetry finishings in the grandesque reception to allow for an understated elegance with thoughtful layouts - and of course, a story to tell lies behind every furnishing. The fusion of Middle Eastern and Asian synergy flair will only have you coming back for more, and I for one will certainly return. Thank you. @mo_doha

MEMORABLE MOMENTS Immerse yourself in the essence of Qatari Hospitality and discover a cultured blend of Qatari heritage and contemporary design at Alwadi Hotel Doha MGallery by AccorHotels. The portfolio of MGallery Hotels are designed with
the sole intention of creating unique experiences and encouraging guests to immerse themselves in adventure, history, culture, romance and nature. Each location has its own distinct identity and you will become part of its story. Alwadi Hotel Doha overlooks the beautiful Souq Waqif which for centuries was the location for Bedouin to take their wool and animals to trade for daily necessities. As time passed the Souq started to become run down to the point where demolition was considered. Luckily, in 2004, it was decided to preserve this historical site so the entire market area has been renovated and restored according to the traditional Qatari architectural techniques. This inspired decision to regenerate means that this is probably the most authentic Souq in The Middle East and it provides not just a cultural experience but also a fascinating venue for shopping and dining. It came as no surprise to me when I entered the hotel that it was a blend of traditional Qatari heritage and high end luxury. The décor throughout mirrors the shades and tones of the Souq and the surrounding areas. Filigree fretwork window and wall features, dark wood , creams and earthy tones combined with a variety of textures and fabrics merge and flow
from public spaces into the expansive suites. Elegance and decadence in equal amounts. Upon arrival I was escorted to my Souq Suite which was bright and airy and afforded superb views of the neighbouring Souq. The terrace was vast and provided me with ample outside space should I wish to soak up the neighbourhood in solitude. Various shades of cream combined with dark wood and crisp white sheets reflect the essence of Qatari style. The room was comfortable and homely with an injection of sumptuousness in the form of Bose sound system and Nespresso machine. The bathroom was no exception with a decadent rectangular bathtub and vast shower. The finer details such as towel art and petals placed elegantly on the signature king size MyBed are the first step to making memories here at the Alwadi Hotel. Dining at the hotel is a continuation of the theme of trade and empire. Le Colonial exemplifies the global links to the gulf through trade routes. The floor tiles are imprinted with the names of ports, the furnishing would not look out of place in a Colonial Mansion and the lighting features mimic old port containers. The feature wall adorned with a map showing trade routes is fabulous. Miniature barrels and crates house fresh fruit and juices. The staff encourage guests to enjoy a detoxifying ‘shot’ each morning before proceeding with their breakfast experience. The menu boasts a series of set breakfasts and www.ohlala-magazine.com

REGIONAL Escapes bespoke international specialties. You may wish to embark on your day of business or leisure with a full Arabic, French or English Breakfast. Eggs Benedict is offered in 5 different forms. The ‘Hearty Me’ with avocado and grilled asparagus served on brown bread with citrus sauce allows you to indulge but not overly. The ‘Royal’ with smoked salmon so delicate that it literally melts in the mouth was a mouthful of indulgence. Traditional Qatari dishes such as Saj and Balaleet are offered alongside Pancakes, French Toast and Porridge. Le Colonial transforms breakfast into a dining experience beyond anything I have experienced before. The restaurants at Alwadi literally flow seamlessly into one another through the connecting stairwell. La Sofra takes inspiration from the Ottoman and Turkish worlds. In modern Turkish language ‘sofra’ means a table prepared or set for eating a meal. This is reflected in the menu whereas the décor is more reminiscent of an Asian imperial dining room, once again reflecting colonial links. Intimate terraces can be accessed from the main restaurant. Cold Mezze including an impressive array of Hummus, Tabbouleh and Fattoush may tempt you alongside tantalising regional specialties such as Labneh Salad or Chicken Liver with pomegranate molasses. Ordering my main course was nothing short of a dilemma. Grilled meats and seafood can be enjoyed in the form of ‘Grand Platters’ ensuring diners sample a selection of the best seared morsels on offer. Stuffed Quails and Grilled Baby Chicken may tempt you away from the family style local lamb or the tagine with dried fruits and prunes. Genuinely a spectacular array of The Middle East’s most decadent dishes. Presentation was a revelation and more Michelin Star than traditional Persian. The selection of Hummus adorned with ‘jewels’ and garnishes exemplified this.
“It came as no surprise to me when I entered the hotel that it was a blend of traditional Qatari heritage and high end luxury. The décor throughout mirrors the shades and tones of the Souq and the surrounding areas.” In addition to the terrace area and pool the hotel boasts a state-ofthe-art M|FIT gym and M|SPA. The ambience is traditional and serene and fragranced with Shifa Aromas. The treatments offered will no doubt enhance your sense of well-being and leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated just as the expertly delivered full body massage did for me. Whether you then choose to explore the surrounding cultural delights or cool off in the roof top pool a visit to this particular spa will certainly allow for more unique memories. The hotel isn’t just the perfect base for families or couples immersing themselves in culture but also for those wishing to mix business with pleasure. Thoughtful additions such as in room dining, delivered at an impressively high standard, are perfect after an exhausting day of meetings and dialogue and allow you to enjoy the features of the superbly equipped suites. Regardless of your motive or duration of your stay Alwadi will create a memorable story of your time in Doha. www.alwadihoteldoha.com / @alwadi.hotel.doha 82

A-MOR-imoto Based in the luxury of MONDRIAN DOHA one expects the unexpected. Well, experience fine dining like never before at MORIMOTO DOHA as it dispels any previous notion of Asian cuisine.
I
t is no surprise that Chef Morimoto chose Mondrian as the venue for his first restaurant in the Middle East. Mondrian is triumph of style and spectacle that is the very embodiment of the Omakase style. Customers ordering omakase style expect the chef to be innovative and surprising in the selection of dishes, and the meal can be likened to an artistic performance. We genuinely tingled with anticipation. Morimoto boasts numerous artworks by the Japanese painter Hiroshi Senju which are graceful and energetic in the same breath. The décor is Asian in origin but contemporary in its delivery with rose gold columns, vast oversized lanterns suspended from the ceiling and leather booths which create a convivial dining experience. In addition diners may opt for the high stools of the sushi bar where up to 16 diners experience chefs preparing delicacies in front of you. If you may seek a more relaxed approach the main dining area offers numerous configurations or venture behind the hidden mirrored doors to a more intimate private dining scenario. Morimoto can cater for any occasion, event or whim. The sublime surroundings sets the tone for what is about to follow. We were presented with Tofu Miso soup which was the most sublime white miso broth with silken tofu. Chefs then prepared Yellowtail ‘Pastrami’ which was seasoned with togarashi which is the Japanese word for red chili peppers and a general name for a group of condiments
84
www.ohlala-magazine.com
that blend chili pepper with other ingredients. This was combined with yuzu crème fraiche and candied olives. Fusion of flavours on a level I had never experienced before, until I was introduced to the Oyster Foie Gras. Teriyaki sauce is combined with the vibrant yellow uni and decadent foie gras. The nigiri sushi with its vinegary rice perfectly accented the accented the Otoro, Hirame, Amaebi, Chutoro and the mouthwatering grail of wagyu, A5 grade. In order not to spoil the surprise I will not divulge how the blow torch was employed! Each was delicately presented with such simplicity that it seemed impossible that the flavours and sensations on the palate could be created by something so minute. Our palates were cleansed by the Intermezo or passion fruit and star anise sorbet. Encapsulated in an orb which resemble the most delicate Venician glassware sitting on a bed of ice. It may seem that my attention to detail in describing the elements of the presentation of each dish is a little amiss but this is down to the fact that the quality of the ingredients meant that staging was effortless. It seemed on first inspection that nothing could top Morimoto’s version of surf and turf, Wagyu Cheek and Black Cod fused with Carrot and ginger puree. This was until tender strips of Japanese A5 Wagyu Ishiyaki style were seared to our exacting standards on a large hot stone. Almost wafer thin and accompanied by Maldon sea salt, sesame and chimichurri sauces. At this point we were lost for words. Those with a sweet tooth are not neglected either. The chilled cheesecake souffle with raspberry meringue and seasonal berries once again highlighted the skill and vision of the Chefs and the scope of their Omakase ‘performance’. Morimoto is not just a statement but is the exclamation mark! It sets the standard not just for restaurants in the Middle East but globally. Therefore Morimoto ‘itadakimasu’, I gratefully receive and ‘Goschisosama’...Thank you for the experience. @morimotodoha / @mondrian_doha

MISS Ohlala
BLUSHING
content and purpose steeped in tradition. Whichever faith, race or walk of life you come from your right of passage into marital bliss will usually follow a particular formula and journey. Let’s take a look at some of the common threads which run through this special day. Dancing. At the heart of every celebration we usually find dancing of some description, but none more so than at a wedding. In many western weddings, particularly in the United Kingdom, the first dance from the bride and groom is much anticipated. Much time is spent deliberating the song choice which is usually pertinent to the story of the married couple. Traditionally the first dance signalled the commencement of the celebrations once the formalities had been concluded. The first dance can be traced back to the early civilisation of Egypt and India. As with so many things the Greeks cherish tradition and the first dance is no exception. The Kalamatlano and Zembekiko are danced separately by the Bride and Groom and their respective male and female guests before toasts and plate smashing. Somewhat of a spectacle in comparison to a reluctant Groom being dragged around a dancefloor by his Bride. Money and gifts. Modern weddings are often between two people who already have an established life together, therefore, the need for gifts which will furnish their new lives just isn’t relevant as it once was. ‘Your presence is the only gift we require’ is one of my favourite lines from a wedding invitation. However gifts and money still play a major part in a plethora of ways. Bombonieres are presented to guests usually in the form of flavoured, sugared almonds. The five favours represent health, happiness, fertility, wealth and a long life. ‘Chuck Outs’ or throwing money and sweets is common throughout the western world, as the bride makes her way to church and gifts her neighbours with coins and sweets thrown from the house or bridal car. The Royal Family. When Prince Harry married Meghan Markle the spectacle was streamed around the world and scrutinised by fashionistas everywhere. However, the Royal Family are responsible for more than simply creating a stir in the press. Queen Victoria started the trend of wearing white wedding gowns when she tied the knot with Prince Albert. Also, King George II made chimney sweeps officially a symbol of Good Luck by Royal decree in 1700s after a Chimney Sweep had saved his life. Hand shakes and kisses from chimney sweeps are still much sort after by the happy couple. So if it’s you who’s ‘getting married in the morning’ then perhaps you might take a moment to include something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue... or perhaps another tradition to make your day extra special.
